You roll a d20 and add your save throw modifier for what ever the DM asks you to save against
In order for that roll to pass it has to exceed a number the dm won't tell you
exceed or equal
Right
Do monsters make saving throws?
Can dms make random and custom stories?
yes
Yes to both of your questions
I'm pretty new and I'm going to be a dm
Dms can make entire worlds, and even custom rulesets for their worlds.
Between my friends that hates math
You cant really avoid math in dnd but its entirely additive
I hope they pass rolling 2 dice and adding numbers
Does the dm make all saving throws?
No, you roll your own and they roll their own
Only for monsters and npcs
General rule of thumb is your dm doesnt control your character unless they are under non influence
Can dms make custom monsters and npcs?
Yes
yes to both
Can you actually make item drops
Most dms npcs will likely be custom and using statblocks for normal people and sometimes full character sheets where neccessary.
You can make literally everything you want.
Like is it allowed
Yeah sure. Its usually more realistic to put those items in a cheat behind whatever fight theyre having, but you can add custom drops to encounters
Like youre not very limited as a dm as long as you follow the rigid rules set before you in the handbook
@wind ruin D&D is a set of rules that you can use to do whatever you want
Even then, homebrew exists
The rules will do some things better than others
And you can make new rules and options to help bridge the gap between what you want and where the rules don't quite work
Its important to get a good read through the rulebooks, but its also important that if you think a rule sucks, you can rewrite it as long as you inform your players before it matters
Many of the largest dnd podcasts and shows have different rules than the base game for this reason.
Is travel pace chosen by players?
Just as an example, death in DnD is... more of a narrative piece than an actual threat, so many dms rewrite ressurection rules so that loss feels more real
Survival rolls usually, and dm discretion
Your players wont be controlling aspects of your world that arent directly affected by characters.
Sure they can say they run to their objective to try and get their faster. If you dont want to and its an 8 hour journey then theyll all get tired unless their athletics checks are great.
You should deffo read up on the dungeon masters guidr and players handbook
How much time is it for 8 hours irl
Like as you describe?
Yeah basically. Youll describe their journey, interrupt it if you need to for things, but its just as fast as it takes you to tell them
travel is as fast as you want IRL. you can skip over whole uneventful weeks or have something happen every hour
I highly reccomend a good read of the books and having them on hand either physically or in pdf for sessions.
Dms are pretty free to do what they want
I’m having a hard time with the background of my charater
backstory?
the background that usually gives proficiencies and all
Yes
aside from DnD Beyond, you can go on other sites to get more inspiration but in the end, it's you who decides
for a first character, I would go for the Soldier or the Acolyte background
If its a campaign with a new dm you dont know well you can describe how they were as a kid, how they came to want to be an adventurer, how they gained their powers/learned their abilities, and thats really it for the mostpart.
If its with a dm you know who has a self crafted world, sit down with them and ask them for some help and where to drop you.
Aside from that you can read up on websites about it and get ideas.
And I’m trying to find a first name
Backstories can be very simple.
One of my characters is an imrpovised weapons paladin who was left an orphan and just wants folks to smile. His backstory is like 6 sentences.
One of my characters has a 22 page backstory. You have to guage how the dm feels and how you want the character to be.
Because my charater I want to be really cool
Also, plenty of fantasy name generators out there. If youre struggling poke a generator a few times and see what happens
my first character has been hit by the thunder as a baby and survived so I named him Survivor in another language
Cool is very perspective based, gotta be something you find fun. Best to look at some character backstories of other players online
My charater like blue fire
I have a travelling doctor whose cursed to not be able to stay in one place for to long until he finds his true home.
I have a goblin sorcerer who got his aberrant mind powers from a magical stone linked to the abyss.
I have a fire genasi cleric who fights to protect the weak after he killed his mother in a rage for lying to him and discovered the truth of his fathers heroic death.
You can do a LOT with a backstory or just a little.
If monsters are walking in water can I cast a lightning spell on the water to do damage to all the monsters at once?
Ha ha mine has a fatal disease and has to roll a d8 every time to see if i get to move
Dm discretion but many dms award creative solutions like this, so for many, probably
Can my tiefling be named Leo
the fact he's been hit by the thunder doesn't impact the game, it's just a backstory for mine
ahh Ic
sure
why not
Sure. You dont need to follow naming conventions, and many characters grow up outside of traditional locations for their race
Because my dad said that I need to do a name that’s an infernal one
I think the hardest part to get for new players is that dnd is all about personal expression.
You can do, mostly, what you want. I have a character named corozon caliente. Lol
Because I’m a tiefling
Is your dad the dm?
No
Then you can do what you want
We have looking for game chats here, im sure many would love to pick up a new player and help them learn!
My game is full rn or i would
I might be joining a club
Its the official method of play for drop in drop out games at card shops and stuff. An al character is made under certain rules and is able to be played at AL locations.
You usually just go to the same one weekly, cuz level matters etc.
But a lot of people will play AL because it fits their schedule or is easier for them because they dont have to show up every single week
Nope.
The duality of man
I don’t have the online one
You dont really need it
Usually an account to just be a player is free as well i think for.many
game chats ?
Looking for player and looking for dm help you find games
Who is your DM ?
Im my dm haha
To be specific im in an irl game with my gf i dm, and my gf dms an online session with friends but both are at our limit at this time
Sure
I just can’t make a animal up though, right?
Aside from familiars, I allow my players to have a pet to help them in combat or something
Like what?
I have this made up animal I made and it’s like a fox made out of blue fire
usually they tell me what they want and we work together not to have an OP pet
Did you make his stats ?
No
Just use a fox stat block
I made this before I knew about dnd
What class you playing?
Me, idk because people have been saying that alchemist isn’t a class when I looked it up and it says it was a class
It’s a subclass of artificer
So can I use it or no
Once you get to level 3 in artificer
Oh
Do you just want to make potions or acid/smoke bombs 💣
Sortave, is there an inventor class
Artificers
Artificer would be a good class for you
https://youtu.be/ta-E8u2QM5w artificer guide
Hi newbie question in 5e spell Thunderclap is around the caster while Thunderwave is a direktion the caster chooses yes?
So I’m a tiefling artificer
If you make a d20 roll to see if u bypass monster ac does the monster also roll a saving throw?
Yes.
no
why would he ?
Im fuzzy on when a saving throw occurs
You've read this section? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#SavingThrows
let's imagine a situation where a PC wants to do a Sparta kick on the shield of a goblin
The PC will make a STR roll while the goblin will make a DEX saving throw
I think
mmh
I'm not too experienced with spells for now
yes
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05OiKZgfz7hi_Gvw9hftY0LD actions in combat and other rules too in handy video format

Hey! Kinda new and looking for some help with making homebrew statblocks about some ideas i have.
oh thank you
Should I not try to make a character yet since I don't have a group or A dm to work with
Anyone have advice on finding a group? I have never played DnD and worry that will lead to people passing on me in the "Looking for Players" server

I’ve played a few times and would love to find a group here to but sadly I’m minor and have limited time due to school and stuff.
Hit points at higher levels : 1d12 (or 7) + your constitution modifier per barbarian level after first…. Can someone explain how I calculate my hit points after first level? I don’t get the wording
Hi sorry quick question does dndbeyond app include your proficiency bonus in the stat check rolls?
The ability skill check only includes your Proficiency Bonus if you are proficient in that particular ability skill.
This depends on the players and the game.
Some will take average of the die, some will do max, some force the roll. Talk to your dm when youre in a game and ask how they handle hp
What does per barbarian level after first mean?
I'm making an aasimar character however I'm conficted with their sleep. Some sources say they meditate for 3 hours others say they sleep. Can someone guide me with that
in which sentence ?
Your constitution modifier per barbarian level after 1st
Level 2 and beyond.
Wut
Your.. barbarian level
You go up in level in the barbarian class. So for every level in the barbarian class above level 1 (level 2 +) you apply your Constitution modifier to your Hit Dice.
How do I keep track of the constitution modifier after level 1?
At level 1 you would roll a d12 + Con modifier.
When you hit level 2 you would roll another d12 + Con modifier.
Twice or just once?
Oh ok
Your con modifier only changes if you get more points in con, or are skill drained by an enemy (is that a thing in 5e? Been doing a lot of pathfinder lately)
For example, if you roll a new character that starts at level 5 barbarian you would roll 5d12 + (Con modifer x 5).
This means you roll the d12 five times then add your Con modifier (x5) (if your Con is 14, it's a +2, so that's +10 total)
Theres obviously also gear and other unique reasons for it to modify
But if I am proficient, will the dndbeyond app include it in my die roll or do I need to add it afterwards?
If your Constitution was 15 but you gain ad point to it (such as in ASI) to bring it up to Con 16, the modifier is now +3. The additional hp from the increased Con modifier is retroactively added.
It's included already in your ability skill bonus.
D&D Beyond does all the math for you.
Fab, so I can trust the app to work it out 🙂
where’s a good place to learn for an absolute beginner? I know little to nothing about the game but wanna play with friends who enjoy it

thank you, i appreciate it
Whats minmaxing?
A style of play where you focus on minimising your characters weaknesses, and maximising their strengths
Those types of players concentrated on the gameplay mechanics aspect of their characters rather than the roleplaying aspect — they would take certain levels of certain classes with certain feats/skills to maximum damage output, for example.
I have a mix bag of players, a couple of them prefer roleplaying over combat, a couple like both roleplaying and combat, and one is a power gamer who zones out as soon as combat is over.
Sure, that's just my personal experience and not of the hobby as whole.
Which class are you looking at?
Bard
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#QuickBuild2
Look at the "Cantrips Known" column
Players handbook
Those are features not spell lists
Oh I see it now
How do u count a proficiency bonus with light armor? What roll is it apart of?
You don't
Proficiency not pb
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ArmorandShields
Armor Proficiency. Anyone can put on a suit of armor or strap a shield to an arm. Only those proficient in the armor's use know how to wear it effectively, however. Your class gives you proficiency with certain types of armor. If you wear armor that you lack proficiency with, you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can't cast spells.
@copper marsh did you watch the basics videos I tagged you in
I watched some of them but I have specific questions
👍
Minmaxing isnt inherently a bad thing just as much as building on feel isnt inherently bad and it can coexist just fine as long as theres empathy at the table
Some of my funnest characters suck at talking but do anyway
Hi, i wanna start D&D any good videos or guides you can recommend?

thank you will give it a watch
Are there any good tutorials on how to be a dm?
running the game series by matt coville is decent
How long people been playing I only started 2 months ago
there are multiple creators that have guides, from Matt Mercer and Matt Colville, to smaller ones.
Ok thank you I got the new starter set and no one new how to dm

Hi
I started bout a year ago but learning to dm
oh nice, I recommend reading on the campaing to have an understanding of the story beats, then you as a DM will set up the encounters for your players. Dont worry on being perfect, doing voices, etc.
also when preparing a session prepare about twice and what you expect, just in case your players go of the rails or skip an encounter
That's what my old dm told me and Ive just been jotting notes I didint even think about extra encounters ty
@candid basalt I only started like 2 or 3 months ago so I am pretty new
What sorces do you have
Are you in a campaign at the moment
What do you mean by sources
Like the essentials set or players hand book
Oh yea I am not the dm but we have the books and all the basics like dice and stuff
Pretty inexperienced myself but it is great fun
If you need any info wikidot is a good website to use
Thanks I’ll keep that in mind
Np
So what character do you play in you campaign?
I play a fey lost monk custom origen
btw do not recommend these sites, as they are not official sources
Nice how’s that going
^ mostly the latter
Ok thanks
Noted
Just don't use the hombrew and check with your dm before looking but good for refrence
anyone doing online games i can join to learn?

awesome, never played before i know very very little.
Thanks for the info but it’s late where I am so imma go to sleep
Thanks for all the help
Does anyone know a good site for online campaigns?
You want to join a campaign or create one?
To host a camping so people can play online with me
Hello, I was wondering if it was ok to post a link for a game I am running over a paid site?
Check out #looking-for-community and #looking-for-players channels here. Roll20 has its own LFG and there are services like Demiplane.
How does bardic inspiration work?
Thank you
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#BardicInspiration
You can inspire others through stirring words or music. To do so, you use a bonus action on your turn to choose one creature other than yourself within 60 feet of you who can hear you. That creature gains one Bardic Inspiration die, a d6.
Once within the next 10 minutes, the creature can roll the die and add the number rolled to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw it makes. The creature can wait until after it rolls the d20 before deciding to use the Bardic Inspiration die, but must decide before the DM says whether the roll succeeds or fails. Once the Bardic Inspiration die is rolled, it is lost. A creature can have only one Bardic Inspiration die at a time.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (a minimum of once). You regain any expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Check out Handbooker Helper's Bard tutorial video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvlROPHLdec
Ty
Hey hey guys! Really happy to be here
in short the bard gives an extra dice that it can be added to rolls
Ok
guys is it common to find dnd groups with text only? Or like the dm talks and ppl type. Ngl I’m pretty shy lol.
They do exist. The term is play by post.
oh yeah also is this the right channel to ask about extremely simple questions
Exactly what it’s for.
ok good
cuz like I’m learning the game first and then I’ll hop into a session
I don’t wanna go in without any knowledge
That’s my recommended approach, but it isn’t the only one.
so one question I have rn is I have a level 3 fighter
and in my book
it says I can be a eldritch
Yes, most classes choose their sub-class at level 3.
A level 3 fighter choose their sub-class, such as an eldritch knight.
but I’m not sure which spells and cantrips I can use. It says 2 cantrips and 3 spells but then on the second page it says 3 cantrips
I also don’t understand what it means by spell slots
I have 2 slots but 3 spells?
and 2 cantrips?
At level 3, you know 2 cantrips and 3 spells, however, you only have 2 1st level spell slots to cast.
Hello I am new to the world of DND but have always wanted to be a part of it and now I am but I do not know the best way to get started I recently got the Dragon of Icespire Peak Essentials kit and want to start a game with the family and am trying to figure out how to DM it does anybody have any resources for me to learn?
Cantrips are spells you can cast infinitely. You know a number of spells (3) but can cast two. Spells are your ammo, slots are the chambers.
Oh! That makes way more sense!
There’s a video series on YouTube guiding through all the quests as a dm , I’m using it currently rn
Read this chapter on spells and spell casting:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/spellcasting#CastingaSpell
Matt Colville’s Running the Game YouTube series, the Lazy DM’s blog/book, the Angry GM’s blog, and the Alexandrian’s blog should get you started.
ok I have been using the essential kits book
Thank you very much I will start looking
I also recommend going to the #880965682462875679 and grab yourself the DM role so you can ask questions and advice in the #dm-discussion channel.
Thank you as well I appreciate it
There are D&D Youtubers, such as Matt Colville, Sly Flourish, The DM Lair, Dungeon Dudes, Dungeon Craft, How to be a Great GM, Nerdarchy, Web DM, XP to Level 3, WASD20, Seth Skorkowsky, Esper the Bard, How to D&D, Zee Bashew, Don't Stop Thinking, Icarus Games, Runehammer, Zipperon Disney, and MonarchsFactory, who give advice on DMing and playing.
so on my character page, i can put 2 level 1 cantrips (and it’s effects), and then what do I write for the spells? (On the sheet)
It tells you in the subclass description to pick spells from the wizard spell list.
Cantrips are not level 1 spells. They are technically level-0 spells and don't use spell slots (unless you're upcasting but that's something we won't go into now).
Yeah but since I only have 2 spell slots
Oh ok
And 3 known ones, do I write all or just 2?
You pick two cantrips from the available list of wizard ones and three spells. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9ZnlZ7VudM
You pick two cantrips from the Wizard cantrip list:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/spells#WizardCantrips0Level
You pick three 1st level spells from the Wizard 1st level spell list:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/spells#Wizard1stLevel
By subclass do you mean arch type?
Yes, subclass is archetype / specialty.
Classes' subclass names:
Barbarians = path
Bards = college
Cleric = domain
Druid = circle
Fighter = archetype
Monk = tradition
Paladin = oath
Ranger = archetype
Rogue = archetype
Sorcerer = origin
Warlock = patron
Wizard = tradition
Does expeditious retreat allow you to dash in the same bonus action that you cast it or do you have to wait the next turn
You cast the spell as a Bonus Action. You then move (as a Dash action) as a Bonus Action on each of your subsequent turns (for up to 10 minutes).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/expeditious-retreat
This spell allows you to move at an incredible pace. When you cast this spell, and then as a bonus action on each of your turns until the spell ends, you can take the Dash action.
When you cast this spell [,and then as a bonus action on each of your turns until the spell ends,] you can take the Dash action.
I disagree with OMYAC here. You can Dash as part of the spellcast and on subsequent turns Dash as a bonus action.
How do you keep track of time ?
The DM does — they can narratively say X amount of minutes/hours/days/weeks have past, depending on the situation (such as outdoor travel).
Can’t the dm just interrupt the resting phase constantly?
Have you watched any games played? That might give you a sense of how it proceeds.
Sure, that's their prerogative. More fair DMs would roll for random encounters during a long rest if the PCs are in the middle of a heavily populated and dangerous dungeon.
Since I got two opinions, I believe I'll ask the dm but thank you!
Hi just wondering when i try to click on a submission for looking for a dm it says im not authorised becuase of my role how do i fix this
i have signed in to dyno is there somting that i have oto verify
You should be able to view it directly in Discord. If not, check your Discord Settings > Text & Images to make sure embeds are enabled.
ok thank you
Cantrips do not use spell slots
Whoops, I mistyped and missed adding "don't" there. Corrected, thanks.
well you could say that they do use spell slots but you have infinite lvl 0 slots 😉
question so if you take max health in damage when you would of been knocked out would you die instantly? so if i had 4 hp left then got hit by 49 dmg attack and my max health is 40 would i die instantly?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#InstantDeath
Massive damage can kill you instantly. When damage reduces you to 0 hit points and there is damage remaining, you die if the remaining damage equals or exceeds your hit point maximum.
For example, a cleric with a maximum of 12 hit points currently has 6 hit points. If she takes 18 damage from an attack, she is reduced to 0 hit points, but 12 damage remains. Because the remaining damage equals her hit point maximum, the cleric dies.
brand new tryna figure out how to finish building a character because i got invited to play with some people a little lost on subclass stuff wanna know the best direction to go with it
For character build help, you might want to check with #1045166392174972938 (need player or DM role from #880965682462875679 to view the channel I think).

It’s the pyramid lookin dice
Yeah when is it used?
Mainly bonuses to d20 rolls and also as lower damage dice
It's in the How to Play section under "Game Dice"
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/introduction#GameDice
I’ll help out answering questions once I figure it all out
Whenever a spell or weapon description calls for it. A dagger does d4 piercing damage, for example.
Again, I highly recommend you watch the Handbooker Helper tutorial videos.

I’ve watched em
Watch them again.
So I'm going over the DoSWI book with the intention of running it as the first adventure for me and some friends. Coming from table top wargames I think we are all looking forward to combat with minis on the table. With that said... in reading through the encounters and I see absolutely no reason to do anything on a PC turn aside from run into engage the monster and attack lest you open yourself for an opportunity attack. Am I missing something?
Ask in #dm-discussion (go to #880965682462875679 and grab yourself the DM role so you can have access to that channel) because any answers may contain spoilers for players.
There's also the #1029833015423143957 with a specific thread for DoSWI.

If you’re unfamiliar with gameplay and the like, I’d recommend finding one or two actual play pods or streams, it can really help put things into context as well as quite entertaining :]
Understandable
yes sorry
Unless you already have a group (friends/family/coworkers) to play with it may take a while to find a group.
thats okay
There are waaaaay more players than DMs.
it may seem really confusing at first but trust me it isn't
I've only started playing this week but I spent a few hours reading the basic rules and managed to just wing it on my first campaign
do you know the essentials (creating a character sheet, basic combat)?
thats the part i got confused abt
im kinda dumb
i will watch videos agian
is it possible to be a dm
as a beginner?
ok, creating a character sheet:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/ > head here > tools > char builder > enable help text and select "quick build"
from there it should be rather self explanatory but if you want me to explain some more features of it i'll help
--
basic combat:
advantage - roll twice and use the highest number
disadvantage - roll twice and use the lowest number
often times your DM will explain what to do, commonly it'll be "roll for initiative"
say you are in a party of 3 fighting 2 bandits
all of you roll a d20 (+ initiative modifier, which should be listed on your dnd beyond char sheets
whoevers group rolls highest goes first and in descending order (so if your party won the roll and you have the highest roll, you're going first)
you'll cast a spell or hit your enemy with a weapon and roll a d20 to hit - let's say you get a 15, and your opponents armor class is 12 - you manage to hit
then you roll a separate dice for damage - this will depend on your weapon, sometimes its 1d4,d8,etc.
hope this clarifies a bit
it is very possible to be a DM as a new player (and to have fun!)
That said, it does help to have some experience playing
it is possible but i'd advise only to dm if you have good knowledge of the rules
that sounds complicated 😭
it does sound confusing from the start but most people learn while playing
so dice decide how strong u attcak
i read the basic rules, played 1-2 sessions and finally understood it
and if you hit, and if your spell succeeded or not etc
dice decides the outcome of most actions in D&D
does the bandit roll after me?
yes, this is applied in all forms of dice (for example, a dagger could be 1d4, and that means you roll a 4-sided die: if you roll a 4, you deal 4 damage to your opponent)
The d20 is the main die that is used for things like attacks, ability skill checks, and saving throws.
to determine whether i succeeded or not?
or before, depends on the iniciative
no, if you roll higher in initiative your party goes first in descending order
if the opponents outroll you they go first in descending order
are the evil people npc or the group can rp as bad characters too?
usually rped by the dm
@tepid pier Again, I recommend that you watch the Handbooker Helper tutorial Youtube videos I mentioned earlier. They're easier to digest than reading the Basic Rules.
they can play the bad characters as well, it all depends on the DM's imagination
in short for an attack you roll to see if it hits or not (rolls against the Armor Class [AC] of your target), then if it hits a roll is made to see how much damage it does
if you have any more questions you can ask here, if you join a party most dms will be happy to help and explain the mechanics of the game
i hope i can find a group
Check out your local game/hobby stores.
i live in europe in a village
There are online groups such as Meetup that you can find local players as well.
im the only nerd here haha
Well, online will be your best option then. Check out the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community channels here.
There are also paid services such as Demiplane that you can find online groups.
You can also check on Roll20 or on the r/lfg subreddit
thanks alot guys
Where can I find a group to play DnD. I’m new to the whole concept of DnD and I don’t really understand how to play. Are there any videos or books I should look at.

Yes I am!
Is baldurs gate a good introduction in to dnd?
It's 1 and 2 on pc it's outdated but I also only have basic ideas about dnd. I understand character roles and a bit but yea
I posting my ad for my dnd server in #looking-for-community if you guys want to join
If the games interest you I 100% recommend giving them a shot. My entry into dnd was baldur’s gate and then neverwinter nights before I started playing 5e. They take place in a popular setting for dnd campaigns but it’s become quite common for dm’s to customize their own world and lore. Have fun with whatever you end up playing!
Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 were based on the 2E ruleset. Baldur's Gate 3 is basically a homebrewed version of 5E.
If you want a CRPG that's more true to the 5E rules then I suggest looking into Solasta: Crown of the Magister (because they used the "open license" SRD rules and didn't license 5E, they couldn't use the sub-classes found in the PHB and other WotC 5E books).
i have my first irl d&d session soon, what do i need to take with me?
should i bring my character sheet as well or do i not need it?
Hello

how do you unlock feats?
I believe there is a single feat available in the Basic Rules for free and a lot in the Player Handbook, if that answers your question
Or do you mean like when you can get one? Lvl 1 with a variant human or at level 4 in any class instead of an ASI increase
im new to dnd how do i start?

hello there
Hi
Hello, I want to play d&d
I would also like to play d&d
I wanna play d&d aswel
I still don’t understand what they mean by your constitution modifier per level after first
It means for every level you have beyond your first, add your constitution modifier
If you're level 2 and your con mod is +2, add 2
If you're level 4, add 6
What?
The rule cares about levels beyond first, right?
Yes
So level four is three levels beyond first, right?
Yes
And it says you add your con modifier per level beyond first
That’s where I’m stuck
So if your con modifier is 2, and you're three levels beyond first, you'll be adding your con modifier three times
Right?
So 6?
1 times 9?
Yep
Thank you!
I made a character and a character sheet on dnd beyond. If I were to get something in a campaign would I add it to my character sheet
Hi
let's play
If the DM is running their game/campaign through DnDBeyond they would give you a link that when you use, prompts you to pick a character to add to that campaign.
A DnDBeyond campaign is a place where the characters can all be brought together (for the DM to view/access) and to provide a shared dice roller log (if you use the dice rolling feature in DnDBeyond).

Idk how to pick roles it won't let me
#880965682462875679 - click the buttons to toggle which roles to add/remove.
If it's not working, you may need to manually update your version of Discord.
There is no buttons so ok
There are, you just won't see them if you don't have the right setting enabled in discord
You may also need to enable "Show embeds" or something like that inside your Discord settings.
Ok
Then you'll see these buttons
It might be cuz I'm on mobile but it's not there
The setting
How should I make a backstop for my charictor
Settings > Text and Media > Enable Show embeds and preview website links pasted into chat
Hello how does one go about trying DND as a complete noob with no friends
I just wanna try it, if anyone has any help on how to find maybe a session zero and just play to learn in a a open minded environment for someone completely new that would be awesome.
There is not a text and media tab for me
Then the issue is with your discord client and I'm afraid we can't help you with that
I should also specify I learn better actually playing rather than just reading a manual
Ok that's fine I guess
I've given you the appropriate roles manually
Is it normal to think of like 50 characters and their backstories but never play them (Mainly cuz I can’t find a campaign that suits my interests)
https://locator.wizards.com/ to find most local game stores but other places to try are libraries, cafe shops, anywhere nerds hang out you could find dnd
And for online play?
I see, is there any needed resources to be able to play or is it possible to find a group to try a session with without having any of the resources other than like roll20 or other sims
The rules, character sheets, and dice are all available digitally and for free. The DM will decide if the group uses a virtual tabletop.
Aside from the above, players should bring a general understanding of how the game works—so skim the rules—and a willingness to cooperate, communicate, and compromise.

Did the class features use to be known as feats?
No, feats are a different thing
Monk seems over powered
It really isn't. And also context matters.
Thinking i making a bloodhunter echo knight what should i go first?
Probably a better question for #1045165827068002374
Hello! So I am relatively new and I have a question about Hit Die.
I am a level 4 fighter, and after lvl 1 (so i didnt count lvl 1) i rolled 1d10 and added my con to add to my hp. I have 33 hp rn (3d10+11) so do I have 0 hit die?
no, you get 1 hit die per lvl you have, so in this case you would have 4 d10s (cause figher lvl) that you can use to heal up on a short rest
You roll 3d10 + (Con modifier (x3))
So if your Con modifier is +2, you would get 3d10 +6.
I hope this is the right chat but how do y’all feel about letting people use homebrew in hand made campaigns in running my third one with a my biggest party yet and serveral of them have come to me with homebrew content just looking for some opinions thank you for your time
I don't allow my players homebrew their own stuff (or from 3rd parties) as they tend to be OP/imbalanced.
Its entirely upto you, I personally vet any HB, and only allows a very small amount in my games.
That said, my players can reflavour things — one player plays a sentient suit of plate armour (aka warforged).
Interesting thank you it’s good to hear this it’s been six months since my last dm session so I couldn’t figure out thank you for your input it be helpful in making the final decision
If its your biggest party yet, I would just restrict option personally for ease.
Wanted to get get into play dnd and wanted something unique to play as what are some suggestions for a cool character?
Yeah you are right I’ll tell them to keep it to non homebrew content and keep it simple I’ve already gotta make the rest of the world and prep Npc thank you
Check out Quest Chests on YouTube he makes some awesome shorts on ideas for characters
What does a one shot mean
I am pretty sure it means a one session game
Like instead of multiple sessions over a period of time
So I’m watching Bob on his channel about dm-ing a quest right after the 3 starter quests in doip and he says that you should be level 3, but I’m level 4. You start at level 1 right? And every starter quest gives you +1 level. Am I mistaken?
Nvm I am wrong lol
What are your guys thoughts on playing a Monk?
Not sure what you mean. The starter campaigns all begin at level 1, but they vary in what level you ultimately advance to.
Hi peeps today is the first day iqve read the rules and just started looking at dnd
Any tips
What class?
Hello. I have played one game of dnd and didnt rlly understand but want to get more into it. Any tips or anything?

Thank you
I have a question, so I got level 3 on my fighter and i chose the eldritch knight martial archetype and I put my 2 cantrips in my (attack and spell casting) area on my sheet but what do I write for the spells? The book says that I have 2 cantrips and 3 known spells but only have 2 spell slots. Do I choose 2 for now? Do I write all three? Do I write none? This is my question (probably a dumb one to say the last. This was 2 hours ago but I continued playing until next level (and got my 2 ability scores)
You can know more spells than you have spell slots
It just means you have to choose which spells you cast in a given day more carefully
Yeah I know, my question is do I write all three known ones, or the ones I have equipped / “on me”
Write the ones you know for that subclass.
I don’t have any spell slots on my sheet
Your three known ones are the 'equipped' spells
Other classes/subclasses “know” far more spells and would take up a lot of your sheet.
Eldritch Knights don't prepare spells, the ones they know are the ones they have on hand to cast
👍 okay!
Also as a third level it says I can have 2 spells that must be in the abjuration/evocation so I can do an illusion spell as my third?
just wanna make sure I know what it means
So monks in general are on the weaker side. That doesnt mean you shouldnt play it for class fantasy but rather youll be outscaled fairly hard by other martials and casters.
That being said way of mercy monk is pretty good.
At the end of the day though, dnd is a game for fun and if you find monk fun you should play it other persona opinion be damned
You can filter spells by school to check what you can/can’t choose.
Its not like theres an unusable class
I think I made my first dnd paper sheet
Does the patron serve the warlock or does the warlock serve the patron?
The warlock gains their powers from the patron. Whether anything is required from the warlock or how that works is up to the DM and player to figure out.
The trope the warlock class is based on is the old Faustian deal with the devil. This doesn't require that anything like that be a part of the warlock character's story arc, though.
Other than the warlock making some deal with their patron and being empowered by them.
The details of the story surrounding the pact (if any) are up to the DM and Player to figure out.
For example, one of my players is a Fiend Warlock, but believes the voice that speaks to her is angelic, while she is slowly being corrupted

Guys so im thinking about getting curse of strahd but ive heard its hard to dm. Is it hard as in a lot of prep? Or hard as in like being difficult to run?
Also, another option of mine is the ghost of saltmarsh book.
Any other books for a new dm would be great! (Planning on doing it after dragon of icespire peak)
As a new DM, I would suggest trying the Lost Mine of Phandelver is now free with all D&D Beyond accounts and it was written in mind for new players and DMs (it was part of the original Starter Set).
Curse of Strahd may be a bit overwhelming for new DMs. The Ghost of Strahd is an anthology of classic adventures from past edition and not really a campaign. There's the Tales from the Yawning Portal, another anthology of classic adventures (including the Sunless Citadel, a low-level dungeon crawl adventure).
I also recommend you to go to #880965682462875679 to grab the DM role so you can ask questions/advice in #dm-discussion
Okay, thank you!
I've only played in CoS, but I got the impression from reviews that it's probably not a great pick for a first-time DM (though it is a popular adventure). Besides any of the starter adventures, I've heard good things about Dragon Heist and Wild Beyond the Witchlight. One of the DMs I play with says Witchlight in particular does a better job than most with helping you run the game.

What do you mean by bonuses?
The + and - for the strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom, charisma
Those aren't granted by class except for special circumstances. Races and feats are mostly what change those
What about forest elf
As well as ASI (Ability score increases that happen at certain levels)
One moment, I'll check
Ok
i think elves gain +2 in DEX ?
Do you mean a wood elf, perhaps?
Yes
+2 to DEX, +1 to WIS
Quick question: if my character has Oathbow, does anyone know how i shut off sworn enemy in dndbeyond, i don't see a toggle for it anywhere
2 to DEX is all elves, 1 to WIS is specifically wood elves
I do recommend, if you haven't already, getting the Player's Handbook. Its digital form is free when you create a D&D Beyond account
That’s not quite true.
The Basic Rules are available for free, which contains a lot (but not all) of the information from the PHB.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
I’m wanting to, I’m making a dnd for my sister and I just started and made my dnd charater
Odd. On the mobile app for D&D Beyond I got the full PHB for free, as well as Elemental Evil
On mine, I only have the Basic rules. Which does reference the PHB.
Is there any robot/cyborg race besides warforged?
Didn't quite know if it was piracy or not, apologies
what app do i use to make a character
Please don’t advocate piracy.
Apologies
Does it say “Shared with you”? It’s possible Content Sharing is enabled in one of your campaigns and someone there has purchased it.
Dnd beyond
It does not, and I'm not in anybody else's created campaigns
If you need a charater sheet I’ll sent one
I was wondering if there was a resource for learning how to story tell as a DM better. I picked up the essentials kit... and when trying to run it with my family; I realized I was completely over my head with trying to tell the story.
Grab the DM role in #880965682462875679 and check out #dm-discussion!
Also, check out some D&D live plays! They all have different styles and themes, choose what works for you. Just keep in mind that many of them have voice actors for players and your campaigns certainly won't run like theirs in the beginning
Quick question: if my character has Oathbow, does anyone know how i shut off sworn enemy in dndbeyond, i don't see a toggle for it anywhere
i was expecting a toggle like pact blade on the actual weapon
but there isn't one
frustrating
will you be the DM ?
Oh well, I don't really know how to DM either but I try
I’m fine, I might be joining a club
along with your sister ?
She might or might not idk
Practice/doing helps you get better but if you ever want to pick the brains of other DMs check out #dm-discussion
I'm really new to d&d (just got intensed) and made a character sheet but I'm unsure if stuff like the stats are good
Oh I can't post the sheet
Send it to me
dm
If it’s a DnDBeyond character sheet you can link to it - although more in depth character conversation would be best if n #1045166392174972938
I saw them, the stats are good
seems cool
Can people draw my dnd charater
you can ask though i'm not sure many people will do it for free
Ok
So I'm learning DnD, how does the combat work?
i just pick the most fitting image on sites like Pinterest
I am willing to tho I don't have my drawing tablet on me and I suck at drawing so....
probably, but you might want to head out to #dnd-advertisements to look for someone with open commissions
Yeah you can just Google something like "female dragonborn ranger d&d"

Btw the role thingies didn't work
the role thingies ?
In what way did they not work?
What role did you take ?
Player and he/him
it's alright
But I will never be him
Anyways, does using a dagger to parry for example use your strength stat
Or is parrying not even a thing
I do,'t know if parrying is a thing since you roll to see if you hit or miss the target
So if you have a small shield or something similar you just get extra AC
you have unarmed strike but with a ranger, it'd be better to attack from range
though you do what you want with your character
No I mean like what if an enemy closes in on me or I get binded by a rope
oh then in this case, it'd be better to have a melee weapon sure
Having a dagger on hand is never a bad thing…
true
Or pick a race with claws or sharp teeth
with claws or sharp teeths ?
are there SRD classes with these features ?
because I know a homebrew class with it but not SRD
I am aware some races in dnd have claws as a feature
which ones ?
Also isn’t the AC on tortles like cracked cause of their inbuilt armor
What is the ac for a wood elf barbarian
Even one that changes body build as it grows lol
Could you reformulate ?
What does that mean
I didn't understand what you meant
ooh okay
Man said reformulate 💀
😆
anyway good luck with that
don't hesitate to come back if you have questions
I don't know how to introduce myself so I'm just gonna say hi
I'm brand new so I have no idea what to do I read the rules and faq and I just want to start a quick campaign with other news and an an experienced dungeon master

Can I put my T1 magic items I had in other campaigns for my T2 character I made
Do i have to ask all my dms?
Does anyone have a character sheet
I need help with creating a homebrew dnd character with cyromancer as his class. But I don't know where to start
Grab the makerspace role from #880965682462875679.
anyone got any good tips for being a dungeon master? my dad a bit rusty since he hasnt played since the 80s and 70s. we are currently using first edition advanced d and d handbooks and modules if that helps in any way.
Thanks if you have any tips that would make my day.
Focus on fun - everyone playing at the game should feel safe and have fun - DM included.
Set clear expectations and boundaries - particularly about player behavior and how to handle disagreements
Enforce those expectations and boundaries to ensure the game is safe and fun
Make rulings in the moment and then look up what the actual rules say. It’s okay to tell players you messed up on something and you’ll be ruling it “this way going forward”. That said as DM you decide what rules are in effect and what rolls are needed.
Drink water.
Pause the game as needed to clarify things and ensure the safety and fun of everyone there (including you the DM)
Also grab the DM role and you can pick the brains of other DMs in #dm-discussion
I have a question and need help. I played 2e and 3e 35 years ago and just got invited to play 5e and I’m like a noob.Except everyone picked a class before me . The DM warned the party we have no healers . I don’t want to be a support character on my first time back. Is there any classes that have a little healing but still have flavor .. thanks 🙏 I’ve gotten a few suggestions so far but the more the merrier
Paladin would be a good “can fight/frontline” but still have tools to heal/buff the party.
If you want to dive into more discussion about characters, check out #1045166392174972938
Depending on which sourcebooks are available to you, some of the more martial-oriented Cleric domains might suit you. The Forge, War & Tempest domains would be worth checking out.
Communication is key—about expectations, conduct, and the like. It should be woven throughout the game, not just in terms of “tell player characters what you want them to know in the game” but “tell the players what you want them to know about the game.” It isn’t a one-time happening. Keeping the channels of communication open, honest, and working toward solutions will help the game run smoothly.
I believe so yeah
Clerics are terrifying spellcasters in their own right. They’ve got a fantastic spell list that puts out some amazing hurt, and if you take the Life Domain you spend less time healing and more time hurting.
I make them break at a moment so my players can't recover them and have to spend money to buy it again
Spend your encounters at the front line, and toss out a bonus action Healing Word whenever one of your buddies goes down, not before.

on dnd beyond I want to make a character but I can’t find the wizard or cleric or bard option
do I need to buy something? In the basic rules it’s all there!
It should be there
Not every class gets a sub at first level; wizards get there’s at 2nd, I think? Fighter, Paladin, ranger choose subclass at 3, cleric gets theirs at first level though
Hello, I'm Niko, I'm new here, I have not played DND and it's been while, just a need a refresher. However, I have been recently watching youtube D&D videos tutorials and created two character's, one is a Elven Ranger name Newt Skaláwog and the other a Hill Drawf name Alan Humbridge. So I'm trying to look for introductions or any where to get know D&D players, if could you help me find them that would be excellent, Thank you!

@cobalt frigate Yes on here but I played DND since 2018.
@cobalt frigate Whoops, my mistake. Sorry I just have to reread my message next time, but yeah, I have played DND in 2017 or 2018 at LA Comic Con. Although, since I watched Youtube D&D videos recently, do I need to do a zero session or not really? And I have a friend who is interested in playing D&D but he has never played it before, would you think he needs to do zero session/character creation? Plus I have (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20) unfortunately, my d20 has a D&D symbol. Is it useable for a table-top game? Anyhow, He and I are going to the TSC's Rockets in San Diego tomorrow to start D&D.
All new games/campaigns benefit from a session 0 to establish expectations and boundaries for the group.
Are you DMing? It's up to the DM to have a session 0 or not (if the DM and players have played together before then they probably won't need a session 0 since expectations have already been established)
@cobalt frigate no i'm not a DM, I'm a player, so as my friend too.
Your friend should read up on the Basic Rules and/or watch the tutorial videos. The more your friend knows the less time/energy the DM needs to spend with them on explaining how the game works.
also session 0 can be used to finish up characters, rolling stats etc, or some minor changes
@pseudo frost does it normally start session 1 if a DM is choses to start with the game or no?
Well, usually session 1 is where the game properly starts.
I'll certainly let him know, Thanks for the advice.

Nice
It's been... eventful! 😉
By what means
Party nearly died/succumbed to hags but fortunately two of us managed to pull everyone out by the skin of our teeth and blow up their "lair".
My character fell from some height and survived by 1 HP.
Wow sounds extremely eventful
I play a half elf ranger that’s been stabbed 7 separate times and then shot a dark wizard with a bow with lightning arrows from home brew then another party member finished him off with a sneak attack it was great it took us like 2 months to get to that point though
Nice!
New player interested in Star Wars clone wars stuff. I know there's DND out there for it, but I'm unaware on what even to google or look for. Any help?
Question: me being a gloomstalker rouge. If I use assassinate but ALSO roll a nat20 does it crit my crits?
Question: I’m makeing a new character that’s a scientist and I’m useing dnd beyond to make the character someone said to be a artificer when I asked what class I should choose but I can’t find artificer what class is it
artificer is the only class that is not free. you can get it by buying tashas cauldron of everything, or you can buy one of the subclasses individually, which will also unlock the whole class.
Do you have any suggestions on a class that I can choose for my scientist that doesn’t require me to buy something
wizard
Hello DND friends.
Just starting off and was going to Wizard. Way too complex for me at this point. Gonna make something simple and throw him in and see what happens.
Martial classes like fighters or rogues are easier for new players because you don't have to bother learning about spellcasting and how the spells work.
that's true
Definitely go as a fighter or ranger for simplicity
Monk or barbarian if you want unarmored defense though
Fighters are always kinda simple
Sometime
Can I get a show of hands who is a dice goblin

what ?
A dice goblin
Someone who hoards dice like a goblin hoards treasure
Can I get a show of hands

I don't rlly know how to play DND but it seems so fun and I started using DDB but I honestly don't know how to use it and all I've done is try to create a character but that's messed up too 😭 any general beginner tips??
Have you checked the pinned message here on this channel? It has lots of useful links to help get you started.
Should I join my school's DND club?? And no- I'll check it right now
I’d also suggest looking up Critical Role’s Handbook Helper videos (on YouTube) that can help break down basic D&D mechanics and help with building a character.
That would be an easy way to find a group to play with
I dont know if this is the right place to ask this question or not. so here we go, a friend and me are looking to get into online DnD and im unsure as to were to buy material for the game. I dont want to buy books multiple times. I is broke, anyway so is roll20 or DnD beyond a better place to find games? sorry if its an odd question, im very new to DnD.
You don't need to buy any books at the moment since you're starting out. The hobby can get very expensive with all of the books, dice, miniatures, apps, etc.
The Basic Rules are free (think of it like a video game demo) and has all the necessary materials to start off as a new player and DM.

If you're looking for online games check out the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community channels. Roll20 has its own LFG as does many D&D-related Discord servers.
ok, thankyou. i will look in to that then. we arent set on any where need to play the game.
If you join an online group, more often than not the DM will share their digital books (at least if they're using D&D Beyond). I share my digital books with my players in my campaign.
Oh thats awesome and good to know, thankyou.
had no idea sharing books online was a thing.
D&D Beyond allows sharing books only if someone has a Master Tier subscription.
ok, knowing that makes thing a little easier.
Just stick with the Basic Rules to see if you like the game before you start spending money. With D&D Beyond you can buy individual playable races/class/spells (for about $2 each or $10 for a bundle) instead of buying an entire (digital) book.
Ok will do then, it's just nice to know it's not going to be a lot of money to get started. I don't mind spending money if it's something I can play for a long time tho.
Hope to find a spelljammer game but I think I will start small. I love the idea of dnd in space, tho I have honestly never played.
I'm going to be honest with you and I'm very meh about the 5E Spelljammer as a fan of the original 2E Spelljammer because for a campaign setting that has ships in space lacks ship battle rules.
Oh I had no idea. The idea of it sounds like a lot of fun. Probly better to start with the basics anyway.
can i send someone my sheet so they can review it?
We have #1045165827068002374
Are you using DnDBeyond? You can share a link in #1045166392174972938
am using a actual sheet
Then you'd have to somehow get an image of it, share that image via a file/image sharing service, and then share that link - again #1045166392174972938 is the best place for that.
Or describe the general details of the character via text
Again - #1045166392174972938 is the best location for that kind of discussion.
Are there any online sources, that could replace the physical dices, or do I need to buy them?
Loads, you can even use google
D&D Beyond has digital dice, so do most virtual tabletops
Like just a normal random number generator?
Ah, excellent then, thank you sir
Salutations I'm having trouble finding a group with Dyno what am I doing wrong?
As in you're struggling to complete the form, or not getting any responses
You just need to be patient and keep searching
I'm very new to DnD but played Shadowrun and Cthulhu
I will be the Gamemaster for the first time on a new group without any EXP in P&P so far
One of the players want a half elf human Dragonborn or half elf human tiefling. Also one parent is half elf/humans but the other a tiefling or dragonborn.
I'm not sure if i should allow it, because i don't know how to to measure the racial traits for this character. Since i already allowed one with a sea elf and another one a variant human of a mountan tribe.
So are half elf/human tieflings are allowed or working somehow?
As a DM you can ask that your players only pick races/subclasses from the players handbook until you get a better feel of the game mechanics and how things are balanced (mostly balanced by the DM honestly)
I dont think it matters. All of them are PHB races but just let them know you wont allow them to take racial features from half elves or humans and they can only be tieflings or dragonborn entirely
Good. Will handle it that way then. Thank you
Please give me a dnd guide playlist
there are a plethora of channels on youtube that you can easily search and watch that give great advice on whatever you need
There was one playlist i lost i think it's given by a mod here
Dungeon dudes
Hey I'm planning on making a dual wielding rogue fighter and wanted to ask if someone got a build/guide for it/video for it to recommend
New to dnd, are there any interesting characters you don't see thats unique
Idk when I wanna play my second one shot but I’ll think about It
As my name proceeds me im about as new as can be to dnd. Im as far into learning about it as, creating characters, I have 2, A dragonborn rogue and a fire Genasi blood hunter. If anyone has some good youtube video recommendations on multi classing or any tips on what classes are not worth combining that would be great (Im not quite sure if im willing to sink money into this hobby just yet)
This one? http://bit.ly/YTLearnDnD
I won't try to link all of them, but search YouTube for multiclassing videos by Critical Role's Handbooker Helper, Treatmonk's Temple, SkullSplitter Dice, and the Dungeon Dudes.
As for which go well together, this might help: https://www.reddit.com/r/dndnext/comments/a548fe/the_gentlemans_guide_to_multiclassing/
The book players handbook says not to roll a second die if I have advantage or disadvantage if multiple situations affect a roll and each one grants advantage or imposes disadvantage on it. What does it mean? I shouldn’t roll more than one die?
The advantage and disadvantage cancels each other out. Advantage/disadvantage also don't stack.
When applying a feature like the rogues expertise, does it need to be applied every turn for the effects to stay?
ok so i have a question. Im new to D&D. So like i know this is probably a super common question you get all the time, but please bear with me. How does multi-classing work? Ive only played one class ever, but i heard of multi-classing. Is it something you can do? and if so how do you handle stuff like XP?
The affected skills have the Proficiency Bonus doubled.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#RogueExpertise
At 1st level, choose two of your skill proficiencies, or one of your skill proficiencies and your proficiency with thieves’ tools. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses either of the chosen proficiencies.
Multiclassing is just what it sounds like: make your character a combo of different classes as you level up. See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Multiclassing
When you level up you can choose a new class.
If you are a level 1 fighter then ding to level 2, you can remain a fighter (level 2 fighter) or choose another class (for example: level 1 fighter, level 1 rogue)
Ok... i think i get it. So just tell me if i got this. You level up and you choose either to level up one class or the other. They don't both level up at the same time. Right?
Right.
ok thank guys
another question? Is multi-classing Hard?
like are there any de-buffs for choosing two classing
The rules for spellcasting is a bit more difficult especially with multiple spellcasting classes.
It's also possible to mix two classes that don't build well off of each other, so that is part of the learning curve.
There are no penalties for multiclassing if you're asking that. You do need to meet a minimum ability score requirement though.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Prerequisites
I've been playing for two years and haven't multiclassed yet. I'm intimidated by the prospect.
Thanks guys!
most multiclassing will actively make your character weaker than if you go straight in one class. you have to have a pretty good grasp of the game and its interactions to know which combinations have enough synergy to be as good or better than straight class
on the other hand, many people multiclass for story reasons and that is totally fine too
ok so some classes just dont jell well. What classes do?
Remember that you only get the ASI typically at levels 4, 8, 12, 16, and 19 (fighters get ASI more frequently). So if you multiclass and don't hit those levels then you don't get ASI.
all the charisma classes ususally play well together: paladin, bard, warlock, sorcerer
a few levels of fighter go with almost everything
ok thanks man
Thank you
While sneaking do I make a stealth check or does the monster make a wisdom check
Both.
Whichever is higher wins?
Yes.
Unless they're actively looking, the NPCs/monster would use their Passive Perception (10 + Wis modifier) against a stealthed opponent's Stealth check.
If I attempt to sneak what check am I checking against?
Read the post right above. I answered it already.
The DM shouldn't tell you outright if you're successful or not. That's for you (the PC) to find out.
generally, you make a stealth check against a monster's passive perception, unless they are actively searching for you
Sometimes it’s nice to have two explanations
I won't bother explaining further then.
I understand the concepts. Just not some of the specific rules

Last night. Got about 1/3 through Yawning Portal’s White Plume Mountain. We were supposed to start Mad Mage’s Dungeon but decided to do a WPM one-shot. Was good. Lost our rogue 3hrs in. 4 others continuing on. Far too tired today.
i have an enemy with a lot of dexterity advantage i'm going to fight. if i cast greater invisibility on myself, how does it affect their attacks?
are they more susceptible to being hit by my other attacks?
if you are invisible, attacks against you are made with disadvantage and your attacks are made with advantage
what amount of disadvantage?
disadvantage = roll 2d20 instead of 1d20 and take the lower result
and advantage?
thank you 🙏
is there any other way to give them a disadvantage on their dex rolls? they have like >3 dexterity advantage
what do you mean with >3 dexterity advantage?
+3 i mean
i rolled insight and the dm told me that their dex advantage is greater than 3
so their dexterity modifier is +3?
because dexterity advantage as you are using it is not a term the game uses
modifier i mean yeah
so is it +3 or is it 3 more than what you have?
it's at least 4 but i don't know if it's more than that or not
but it's greater than +3
okay well that is just a normal thing to have. why do you want to change it?
i want to give them a disadvantage so that my spells hit more often
ah its for saving throws?
yeah, my bad for not clarifying
okay what class do you play?
wizard
i was planning on casting greater invisibility into vitriolic sphere which is a dex save of 13
but i wanna see if there's a way to make it hitting less reliant on fate
hmm, that dex save DC is kinda low for someone who has access to greater invisibility, whats your INT score?
my int is 15, i'm level 8
oof okay
