Understood. If you’re asking about the attack bonus, it’s proficiency modifier plus the relevant stat modifier. So for cantrip it’d be the class’s spellcasting stat while a martial attack would be STR or DEX.
Spells typically have either a hit or a DC. If you make an attack roll with the spell, you'll use your Prof Mod + relevant Ability Mod. If the spell requires the target to make a saving throw, then the DC will be your Spell Save DC (8 + Prof Mod + relevant Ability Mod)
So i've never played dnd and I have been super interested. I have a grasp of the general premise but I wanted to know if campaigns are restricted to a medieval style. Like, would it be possible to have a campaign based around a futuristic world? (My idea is that everything is still similar to the original, just with more fortified buildings and alot of neon lights, and maybe a race of robots)
You can play in whatever setting you like, not just medieval, but bear in mind the mechanics do assume that the melee weapons are a significant damage source. You could reflavour ranged weapons into guns and magic into tech
re-skins for flavor are fairly common and most DMs will accept it without any issue, so for example if you liked you could have a mage that their magic has golden particles, but in the end its just a flamebolt or whatever. However when you start modifying or creating spells and mechanics it would fall under "homebrew"
not to well versed in D&D i mostly run VTM or Pathfinder but i'm starting to get my handle on the system left D&D when they jumped over to 4th
Do unarmed strikes naturally have proficiency on them ?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MeleeAttacks
Instead of using a weapon to make a melee weapon attack, you can use an unarmed strike: a punch, kick, head-butt, or similar forceful blow (none of which count as weapons). On a hit, an unarmed strike deals bludgeoning damage equal to 1 + your Strength modifier. You are proficient with your unarmed strikes.
if a creature doesnt have a reaction, but a spell forces it to use a reaction, what happens?
Everything has reactions. If a spell forces it to use it's reaction then it does
Spells do not force reactions
A spell may allow a creature to use a reaction if it has it
yea, this is what i mean
so it uses the reaction then?
No. But a creature could use a reaction if it is allowed and they have a reaction to use.
@eternal edge Again, have you referred to the basic rules?
If you had the specific spell and context, we can help better.
dissonant whispers
There is no reaction use involved in the spell. There is a saving throw (not a reaction) that the target must make.
"It takes 3d6 psychic damage and must immediately use its reaction, if available, to move as far as its speed allows away from you."
thats what it says
Ah sorry. You are correct!
So the creature must use it's reaction to move away from you (if it has a reaction and if it hasn't used it already).
ah, i get it now, thanks
So if we put this into steps:
- Dissonant whispers is cast
- Target must make saving throw
- If success on saving throw, target only takes 1/2 damage.
- On failed saving throw, target creature takes full damage and uses its reaction (if it has one and it's not used yet) to move away from caster.
yea, but what is having a reaction? it being not expended yet?
Do most DMs allow homebrew races?
How do I make a cracked ranger class?
Everyone tells me they’re terrible but I wanna be good with a bow
I also want animal handling as well
Really?
How do I make it better then other dps
That's covered in the basic rules under actions in combat
There is an expectation of reading the rules. We'll happily answer questions to clarify details, but there is a point where you need to build a foundational knowledge for us to clarify
if you want purely DPS you might want to do a ranged fighter build, but ranger does offer more flexibility for movement, out of combat encounters etc
Most creatures have a reaction. It's like a special action phase where they can react to things moving away from a contested space using their attack of opportunity or other features (this is just one example).
Generally a creature only has one reaction per turn - they can't keep reacting to everything. So if they used their reaction already, they can't use it again.
So ranger isn’t a good dps?
gaming terms like tank/DPS etc does not translate 1:1 into DnD
They’d be back line
Well dps in terms of some classes are used to deal more damage but are often weaker in hp and stuff so they’ve tanks / front line
ranger can offer a wide range of options, they can be used for damage, or utility, same as any class tbh, for example a cleric could only be a healer, but at the same time the can also be flexible by drastically affecting combat with spells and even melee
also some classes offer utility outside of combat
So how one would build a ranger?
Use the revised version
Dex and Wis mostly
or tasha's
Now a days it has alot more subclasses that feel satisfying
One of two supplementals i don't own 😦
Dex and wis all I need?
Mostly
I mean, those are the Abilities to prioritize
those are your main atributes, since most abilities and skills for a ranger are Dex (ranged weapon/AC) and Wisdom (spellcasting) dependent
the other stats are also important, but they are not AS important for a ranger
Ok
It doesn't really need to get much more buildy than that unless you really are trying to optimize a lot. In which case, I'd suggest just searching google for "5e ranger build guide"
Is there any good subclasses?
all subclasses are good in the right context
Last character I played was a swarmkeeper ranger, it was fun
Only ranger I've played in 5e, so I can't really comment a lot
Drakewarden seems to be popular
I’d prefer sneaky if that helps if not more dps / support
GSheet
So anything I want
so... not an official one, I would recommend reading #rules
🙊
Was told g sheet is the best way
But they fellow the rules anyways right?
It’s not homebrew
We don't disallow discussion of digital character sheet options that aren't D&D Beyond (and never have)
Discussion of pirated content is against the rules, but that is a different kettle of fish
I’m new to D&D so I’m confused people are acting like it’s pirating
Although people do it on paper
I’m just doing GSheet so I can link it to a bot
They're under the incorrect assumption that because this server used to be the D&D Beyond server, we don't let people talk about options other than D&D Beyond
That is allowed
That isn't the case and never was the case. In fact, our official discord bot Avrae connects to gsheets amongst other non-ddb services
Copying material you've purchased into some format for personal use is legal and fair use
and if im correct sharing homebrew is allowed
Using that bot for g sheet
Well for newcomers I'd suggest staying with official material until you have a better understanding of the game and it's balance.
Gsheets refers to character sheets set up in Google sheets (a spread sheet program)
My friend has and often shares the information but they’re not online
There is #homebrew
But these subclasses aren’t homebrew right?
No
So I’m allowed to ask in this channel
Don't need DnDB, you can access the free basic rules here: https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf
We try and keep things on the basics here. So I'd suggest checking out the basic rules
I highly suggest buying the players handbook
I do not like to shill but having it on hand is super nice
There’s a lot free on the D&D beyond app
Rules on what tho kinda need to know what to look at
I understand that just need to know subclasses for ranger and what’s best for what style
@pseudo frost that's not really helpful
Rules I checked don’t have anything on subclasses
The basic rules only cover one subclass
So how do I find out about sub classes?
You want me to pay for a class I don’t even get to read about?
How do I know I wanna pay for it
Not all the material is free and in the SRD.
YouTube videos on subclasses
Here's the different official Ranger subclasses:
Beast Master
Drakewarden
Fey Wanderer
Gloom Stalker
Horizon Walker
Hunter
Monster Slayer
Swarmkeeper
We can't give you detailed breakdowns of each subclass
Other discord server they gave me them on druids and other classes
If any of those sound interesting, you can go find the book they are from and buy it.
That's beyond the scope of this channel
Well this server doesn’t have the heart of the last one not the same and I’m leaving it thanks but goodbye
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05Pf9RknbcprM6tJwOcxO6N4 all subclasses in DnD
Is a magic user class a good starter for newcomers???
If you're into it, sure.
But it does add a bit more complexity as you'll have to learn your spells and all that
Is there a Chanel where we can look for one shots being held?
?looking
We have four channels to help you find your next game:
• #looking-for-players — Dungeon Masters/groups looking for players.
• #750812887697588356 — Players or groups looking for Dungeon Masters.
• #looking-for-community — Communities looking for members.
• #paid-looking-for-game — Professional DMs advertising services.
If you can’t see any of these channels, you will need to head to #880965682462875679 and select the appropriate role depending on exactly what you're looking for.
These are the channels to look for games
I wouldn't recommend a spellcaster as a class for someone new to D&D.
Well, spellcasting rules and spells means more things to learn and remember.
That's up to you.
Yes.
What class do you want to play
Aaaa GREAT
And I rlly wanted to play wizard or druid
Personally
I’m just a littlleeee confused on how the spell slots work is all
Did you read the free Basic Rules?
Yeh but I mean like I don’t understand how the long rest works
Are u just supposed to sit out in the party?
When u run out of spell slots?
That's what cantrips are for - they don't take a spell slot
Offff* not in
OOOOH
That’s actually rlly helpful I was wondering how to use cantrips
my first character (which i still use) was a druid snd she was simple to figure out!
Ok take wizard at level 1 you have 2 spell slots and know about 4 spells it just means you can cast 2 spells
you should play whatever you’d like, but be cautious of the complexity if you feel something is too complex, you should ask here
YouRE SO SWEET THANK U
Your DM can help you with n game to learn
I FEEL BETTER NOW
Yahhh I don’t have dm or like friends who play it so I’m kinda researching in my own time and hoping I can find ppl to play with in the future :DD
Have a dm* not English aaaa my goodness
No worries! Do check out the pinned message here in the channel - it has lots of useful links that can help get you started!
AAAA THANK U I WILL
Spell casting guide https://youtu.be/yj0q8hj-6a4
too bad they havent redone Primeval Guardian
i haven,t even played dnd yet
Does anyone have an example character sheet I can use for cross referencing?
There are a lot on this site here!
Ty
At levels 1-10 too, so it can give you an example of how your class levels up too
Very helpful
Hi
Do i count as new if I haven’t played a lot, but started eight years ago?
I still don’t know a ton of rules for the game.
Ask your DM.
Then you are.
I’ve played a total of four campaigns including the one I ran
That’s an average of one game every two years
its getting difficult to find amazing people to play with or find great sessions to join. ive tried the Looking for players and Looking for Dms but they remove my posts
ive been on D&D discord 4 months, had 3 bad sessions and im trying my best to search keep searching for the best group i can find and enjoy D&D with
at least you got to play
Maybe search elsewhere as well?
is there a way i can get a weapon ahve a d 12 dice
Certain weapons do. If you mean can you increase it to a d12, I don’t think so, but maybe ask in #dnd-rules to be sure.
oh and i have searched everywhere else to play.
it wasnt a good experience. but im not the only one who has difficulty finding people
i mean i haven't even been able to play in a game
Lances and great axes both do 1d12 damage, while mauls do 2d6. These are the top damage weapons among the PHB weapons.
What i do here
if you want to be accepted into any group, don't rules lawyer, follow the first rule of improv which is yes and, and don't whine when things don't go your way!
Ofcourse
that advice wasn't really for you, tho it is very useful for getting into groups
And you said group what do you mean about group
any group you play with
Ok
New Level 1 Sorceress on a Mission to Find Allies for Her Noble House . No Experience, But Want to Play a Traditional Campaign .
If I'm making a new Elf character and want to choose Wood Elf, do I take both trait lists or just the Wood Elf?
You get the both the basic elf stuff as well as the wood elf stuff
Elf is the race and wood elf is the subrace.
Or, if you're playing with the Tasha's rules, and everyone just gets a +2 and a +1, then you don't worry about those bonuses and just worry about the other listed racial features
We're allowed to use Tasha's and Xanathar's, but I don't have them yet. Soon though
is faerie fire worth it in late game? I rather not have it as I am already struggling with action economy. I need find method to hide without using bonus action on it.
or get advantage from other sources as then I do not need to hide
@cerulean sluice that's more a question for #1045166845688287292
on dnd beyond does the monster manual update with the monsters from other sourcebooks when you buy them?
No, it only lists the monsters from the monster manual
ah kks, ty ty
For Ranger's, do they add each Favored Enemy to your Primeval Awareness, or is it just the one chosen at 3rd Lv?
Primeval Awareness
... For 1 minute per level of the spell slot you expend, you can sense whether the following types of creatures are present within 1 mile of you (or within up to 6 miles if you are in your favored terrain) ...
it doesnt state if it is affected or not by favored enemy , basically works as a radar
So they aren't connected, just have similar lists. Meaning you only get to choose one type for Primeval Awareness when you first acquire it, if I'm understanding
Woah. Way more useful than I was reading
no, Primeval Awareness is more of a spell, whenever you cast it you know if there are creatures from that list, you wont know their location or number but some times just knowing they are present can be a lifesaver
Hello I'm new to dnd
I wanted to see what my brother was talking about dnd
Thank you.
Hello
I'm sorry if this is the wrong channel for my question but is there no longer a dedicated spot for using Avrae commands?
Hello everyone,
Could you tell me where to find the tutorial?
thanka youuuu
Do Blood Hunter's curses count as spells ?
Oh it's homebrew ? I thought it was official
Nope
also
if a class allows a PC to use a reaction to do something, can he do it ?
I dont know if PC, like monsters, have reactions
everyone can use reactions, provided that the trigger for said reaction is met.
the only reaction anyone gets by default is attack of opportunity.
other reactions might come from class features, feats, spells or are written on a monster's statblock. They will always include which events trigger them
what exactly is adventurers league?
Organized play. “Adventurer's League (AL) is the official organized play community for 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons. Consisting of several campaigns set in various D&D worlds such as the Forgotten Realms and Eberron, AL games use shared rules for character creation and rewards that allow you to play the same characters at different tables and locations, both in person and online.”
It's a form of organised play that uses a special set of guidelines to make it possible for you to turn up with a character (made using AL rules) at any AL game and be instantly ready to play
Is there no dm academy anymore? Where do I ask about stuff?
i dont understand how concentration works when you're in a fight, in the PHB, they just say you need to concentrate but how does that impact the way you play ?
Is it like you can't attack for X turns ?
Even if it was that, how do I know how many turns ?
You can (in most cases) only maintain one concentration spell at a time. If you cast another spell that requires concentration, the first spell drops. You can still cast non-concentration spells as before.
If you take damage, you must roll a constitution check to see if you can maintain your concentration
Spells specify their duration. A round is six seconds, so a spell that lasts a minute would be 10 rounds of maintaining concentration (assuming nothing interrupts it).
Risk like how?
that means you can't attack for 10 rounds ?
Read the description. You can attack and cast other non-concentration spells.
oh okay
greetings
Hello, if I have sentinel on my paladin and a creature create an attack of opportunity, I can make 1 reaction on him with 1 attack. Does it means I can attack+smite+use my extra attack (lv5 bonus) or just my attack and smite without the extra attack or any others bonus attack? Really tricky to start dnd 🤧
I don’t have the rule at hand, but when you make an opportunity attack, it’s only one attack. Extra Attack is only on your turn. You could still smite, though.
Hey all! Are there any good online resources to character building anyone recommends?
DnDBeyond
Thank you!
Makes it pretty easy to create characters and even has a mode to help explain things as you’re building (for new players)
First few videos in this play list can help too https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L
Do note that some classes and races are locked and you’ll need to own the book on DnDBeyond to use them.
(Basically anything not in the SRD either requires purchase or content sharing or you homebrew it using DDB’s homebrew tools)
That’s why I like dungeon dudes they don’t do the whole optimal builds more on the RP side
hey it's my first character and i'm playing a druid. I wanted to stick with a herbivore theme like prey animals, but i dont want to feel weak or let my team down, (seeing as most of the good ones are carnivores). anyone have any good suggestion on what are good low cr herbivores?
What circle are you
Here is a search of Beasts with CR =< 1 on D&D Beyond
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters?filter-type=0&filter-type=2&filter-search=&filter-cr-min=1&filter-cr-max=5&filter-armor-class-min=&filter-armor-class-max=&filter-average-hp-min=&filter-average-hp-max=&filter-is-legendary=&filter-is-mythic=&filter-has-lair=
Thank you. Im going to go down the youtube/blog rabbit hole tonight so im not just slapping things into a character!!
Hello all, I am fairly new and looking for a noob group to join and learn with I played in a few groups but we did not make it long and disbanded due to inactive activities. I struggle with knowing what to roll for things and if there is a beginner group for me to grow with please let me know
you can look in looking for players for games to join
I highly recommend Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos on Youtube.
I need a second opinion on my character https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/89257990
he is a grung that uses primal savagery with grung poison to deal a lot of damage
@cobalt frigate @hearty fern thank you both
np
I am looking for an experienced Dm. If this applies to you, message me directly. As I have an offer to make.
Hi I’m looking for a group to play with I’m new
Oh theres a newcomer spot
Here, i didn't notice this channel
Hey guys me and a few of my friends started a campaign recently, and i’m the dungeon master but i have no idea what to do with our first session, any advise would help.
i have a map if that would help!
I don't mind helping out, what do you need help with?
we already have a storyline picked out (plague that’s only cure is dragons blood) but we do t know how to slowly introduce it while incorporating adventures and leveling up our characters
Are you making your own homebrew world?
yeah
And this is your first session with the players?
yep!
Ok, have you done a session 0 with them?
Do you need anymore players
yeah
no thanks we wanna stay private
Ok
Wrong place to advertise
i want to learn how to play the game, i have zero clue what im doing or how to even make a character can someone help
My bad
I can help out in a bit
You wanna join though
@bold cairn Please use #looking-for-players if you look for players and please use the post format in said channel.
I want to join
The way I personally think about early level D&D is this. They are characters with little name or fame. They are not that strong and they are not trusted to do much. They need to start trying to make a name for themselves while they are growing strong.
Start them local. In a small town dealing with local issues. Bandits, some monsters stealing crops, etc. You can introduce your plot point once they have some relevance. For example, a wandering nomad strolls into town asking for medical assistance. He bears a plague that has not been seen before. That can help your players start to get into the meat of the main plot.
sounds good, thanks!
Where did you learn about D&D? Out of curiosity
have a buddy who told me about it
No worries, its always intimidating starting a campaign. Look up some online campaigns and their starts, it definitely helps. Read the premade adventure modules as well, it can give you some sense of what to do
Sounds good, what do you know about the hobby/game so far? It will help me point you down the right road
i know absolutely nothing except that you make a character with certain races and abilities and you roll dice
Have you played other RPGs? Maybe in video game format? Fallout, Witcher, Final Fantasy are great examples
ive played fallout
Think of it as a Tabletop version of that kind of game. Except the engine is the system (D&D 5e) and the game is the Dungeon Master
alright
This website is a decent start to explain some of the basics, but not all.
I'm trying to find the link to the basic rules but I can't seem to find it, mind if I DM you the PDF of it?
yes thats fine
Alright, its been sent. That should be the basic rulebook in order to jump in. I suggest giving that a read and letting me know if you are still confused
Do you have any more questions?
is a tiefling character thats part of the cult of the dragon viable?
The answer to that probably depends on your campaign setting.
But generally speaking, sure.
You may need to ask your DM for that
Heya, I'm kinda new to the whole DnD thing, but I've done a fair share of reading up on it and I have experience in roleplaying with other people. I know it's not the same as playing with other people, but I feel like I have a decent understanding about how things work and how to play. I do have some questions though, so if someone would volunteer to answer them for me, that'd be fantastic!
Fire away
- would it be possible to create and play as a highly intelligent creature capable of reading words and understanding languages (yet unable to speak)?
Sure, why not? Assuming the DM and the other players at the table have no issues with it, go for it
Possible—I’m in a game with a character who can’t speak—but it presents a lot of challenges to the game (since being able to communicate is kind of a base assumption).
Facial expressions, vocalizations, and general body language would play a large part in the creature's communications
If you are playing in person, you can go for it, assuming the others are fine
Sure, but those aren’t nearly as rich and diverse as spoken language.
Online, that poses a much bigger problem
As mentioned, though, if the table is good with it, go forth!
I don't mean to be prideful, but I believe I can take on the challenge. Would you like to know more about the creature I plan to create?
Sure...
Wait, you are taking this concept online?
Because if you are, not sure about everyone, but most online sessions that I was ever part of never had face cams on
So you will need to rely completely on descriptions to get your point across
I had planned to, but if you don't think that that is a good idea, I can drop it.
Like I said, i have no idea how DnD online works
Normally, its people playing on a VTT like Roll20 with everyone being in a Discord/Zoom call
I see.
Hello, New here, I somewhat know a bit about d&d but still very very new to it, I was wondering if anyone knows the best way to make a charcter spreadsheet cause I would like to try play but I don't have a character, let alone a spreadsheet, so could I ask for some help please
the wizards of the coast website has printable and digital fillable sheets or you could check out D&D beyond
Oh cool thanks I'll check it out
Download fillable character sheet PDFs here:
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Hello everyone somewhat older player here ask me anything!
Hey iv never played dnd before, should I start off trying to play or to try and learn to DM
I recommend starting off by reading the game rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Then learn how to make a character (DnDBeyond can make this fairly easy with their online character builder), then maybe watch some D&D livestreams/videos of people playing. Then find a group to play with.
I know the rrules and basics I think iv watched dnd stuff for years just want to try and play
So I guess start by playing first and then try your hand at DM'ing. That said, you totally can be the DM if that's what's interesting to you (set the scene, determine which rules are in effect, determine difficulty challenge and what rolls are needed, interpret results, and manage your group of players).
the issue is I can't really play. don't have freinds really....
You can always play online! Even this very server has an lfg channel
You can use these channels to try and find a group to play with.
It's a bit like searching for a job though just to set your expectations. Don't expect immediate responses and sometimes groups aren't a good fit.
oh yea I filled out one of those a few days ago and waited. nothing happned
I play online (with people I knew for years, but still) and it's ton of fun.
Though I started out as a DM actually. It was nice, but I don't really recommend it - some things you can't really get without playing first. My game, while nice, turned out... pretty different from how most games are like.
Keep looking. Don't just leave an application, but also reach out to potential DMs. The ratio is skewed towards more players looking than there are games, so you need to be proactive
fair, doubt many people want someone who has no clue how to roleplay and has never played
No worries about that. All of us have started somewhere. And newcomers can be really fun to play with since they have less preconceived expectations
Usually the biggest issue is schedules and social dynamics (do you mesh well with the group)
There are many beginner friendly games out there, some DMs even specialize in helping new players learn the game
Should I still take basic gear if I'm joining a high Lv one-shot, or is there a list of higher tier gear that I'm not seeing? Like, is everyone going to show up with magic items and I've got a chain shirt?
Grab the starting gear, then talk to your DM about what you're allowed to exchange out and what is allowed/not allowed as far as magic items, etc.
Ok. I figured there must be something like that, cause the DM gave us 1500gp to buy gear and I've barely touched that outfitting with basic gear
guys i think im asking the same thing multiple times but i havent really understood it, even after reading the book
how do damage of a weapon and hit/dc relate?
like a dagger has 1d4 + 3 damage, but the "hit/dc" of it is 5
i dont see anything about that, where is it supposed to be?
If you carry on down that page, or look at the side bar, you'll also see the following
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#DamageRolls
It's all in that section
Your Hit d/c is your chance to hit. That number is governed by your proficiency and the ability score(s) determined by the weapon’s properties.
A dagger is finesse, so it can use either strength or dexterity.
Let’s assume you’re a level two rogue with 16 dexterity. You’re proficient in daggers, so that means you get a +2 to the attack roll/hit dc. Your dexterity modifier is a +3 and also gets added to the attack, for a total of +5.
how are they seperate then?
How are what separate?
the hit/dc and the actual damage you deal
Because they are
Proficiency doesn’t add to the damage roll, only to your chance to hit.
to hit modifier = ability score modifier + proficiency bonus
save dc = 8 + ability score modifier + proficiency bonus
damage bonus = ability score modifier
And then if you hit it’s 1d4+3 (since your Dex mod adds to damage)
thanks
my first session is this saturday, so im kinda jittery i guess
4 players
also i guess another question: are you supposed to reset characters every new campaign?
Generally you will make a new character for each campaign, yes
Generally yes, more generally yes if it’s a different DM.
Sometimes a DM may say “use x character from y campaign,” but that is exceptionally rare in my experience.
my conflict with is was game balance, since starting a campaign with a high level might make it too easy
i dont have any objections to people reusing their character but with starter gear and level
There’s Adventurer’s League, which allows you to take characters to different tables, but there are rules in place exactly for that reason you say. Characters can only play in adventurers appropriate to their level.
But yeah, if I had a player show up to my table with a level 15 death cleric for Lost Mines of Phandelver I’d ask them to kindly toss it in the bin and make a character appropriate to the game and my table.
is lost mines of phandelvar a long campaign?
Not particularly
Compared to other published adventures: no. It’s designed for levels 1-5.
Most published campaigns are 1-13ish
it also depends on your average session, if you are only playing for 30m - 1 hr it might take several sessions, but if you have a 4 - 8 hrs it might take only a couple
I would say focus on shorter adventures for now
dont think there are published 5e campaigns that go past 15? not entirely sure
yea, im first doing the masters vault, then will move to lost mines, not sure about after that
Dungeon of the Mad Mage goes to 20, but it’s a bit of a slog.
I would recommend you get a better grasp of the rules before worrying too much about long term campaigns
I’d say don’t worry about that for now. If you’re just figuring out damage calculations and class features you’d be better served with some lower-level one shots while you develop your skills.
yea, i think masters vault is a good beginner one
and after that, lost mines will help me
Im trying to write a oneshot but idk what theme to use, please help. Ive been thinking about a time pressuring curse i just dont know how to incorporate that into the story well
You want #dm-discussion
This channel is for getting help with the basics
ok thank you!
Why is that so hard to find a game!? I have asked a least 10 ppl without success. Dangerous time to be a noob
Do you know where is the server looking for a community ?
Apparently they are servers there
I mean, you need to get 5 to 7 people together and coordinate their schedules, usually to try to find a time that the whole group can meet every week. Thats hard.
You need the appropriate role from #880965682462875679 to access #looking-for-community
Definitely, I don't know if being a beginner helps.
How do you find it usually?
me personally, I just play with my IRL friends, but the the looking for game channels in this server see plenty of activity, so I'm sure you can find a game that fit you in there eventually
Reddit's r/LFG has a Discord server, as do many of the D&D YouTube personalities (and they have LFG channels).
also there are usually local Table Top groups so looking in facebook, and even local libraries and similar places might be a good option to look for a game

Interesting. Some commands might be locked to certain channels.
We have #dm-discussion for Dungeon Masters.
oh i didnt see that, thank you!!
Hi
I'm kinda new to the full DND ruleset, but I have used older versions and house rules to play many games.
@stray sentinel hey you would be welcome to join my saturday or thursday game, i'm a content producer as well send me a line and i can hit you my campaing.
Awesome I will send you a message now
hey im new whats the best way to get content to make characters
i want to play a gyff but i cant find them
IMO, Buy the Players Handbook on DnDBeyond and use the character creator tool
ok do you know of any of those free content campaigns i keep hearing about
Oh you want Gyff? You'll need the https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/sais book
yeah but i also want to play i think its an artificer
You can also buy individual classes, races, items, and spells too
Okay for Artificer you'll want to check out https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/tashas-cauldron-of-everything
If you scroll down you can buy just the artificer class
ok
(or one of the subclasses but that unlocks the whole class)
really?
Yes
ok
Then for Gyff, go to https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/spelljammer-adventures-in-space and scroll down to the Races section and you can buy the Giff race stand-alone.
So for the low, low price of 3.98 US dollars (plus any tax) you can create your Gyff Artificer without buying the whole books.
And as an added benefit, if you ever do decide to buy the book that you've already bought content from, what you paid previously is deducted from the price of the book.
A fairly nice feature of DnDBeyond IMO.
hii im a new dm, so i need some tips on how to space out the storyline in the campaign
itd be very much appreciated:]
Hi there! You should grab the DM role from #880965682462875679 and join us in #dm-discussion !
oh oki :DD
@cyan willow man you're messing around with the mods lol, you might find out the hard way
I wanna play DnD
#looking-for-players is for DMs to post the game info
#750812887697588356 is for players to share their free schedule so dm can scout them
Btw profanity isn’t allowed here and why do you assume everyone on here is a “noob”
You can reach out to DMs in messages if you're looking for a game
Besides if you can't even respect basic discord rules, actual dnd gameplay would end up being a nightmare for you lol
how do critical attacks actually work?
When you make a critical hit (usually a 20 on the die), you double all damage dice of the attack
Im new to dnd. How do i join a campaign?

Yes, that means any added effects, like smite or sneak attack, get their dice doubled as well
The only thing you don’t double are the flat modifiers, like your strength or a bonus from a magic weapon
How does the Backpack work ? It says 30 pounds volume and it has 5 weight are these values added or does the Backpack „swallow“ the 30 pounds and then it all weighs 5 pounds ?
No. Backpack weighs 5 pounds alone and will weigh 35 pounds when you pack it full of stuff. Just like real life
Hey I’m new to dnd, I wanna know how the game works
Check out the pins on this channel - there’s some great links to help get you started.
I recommend reading the free basic rules, trying your hand at making s character to see how the rules work with the character sheet, then maybe watching a video/stream of people playing the game, then find a group to play with.
Okay thanks, can dnd be played online or does it have to be in person?
It can be played online. Many folks play D&D using Discord or other voice/chat tools and some use Virtual Table Tops (VTTs) like Roll20.
Ooo okay, sorry about all the questions. It’s just that this game really appealed to me and the complexity of it is quite daunting
Don’t be sorry about asking questions we were all new at one point
It can feel like a lot but remember that learning this is a lot like learning anything else. Just keep plugging away at it and playing the game and pretty soon it’s like 2nd nature.
That said I’ve been playing this for years and I still mess stuff up and forget things. But it’s okay because it’s still a fun game!
Yeah I bet, I’d be up to play a game at some point

hi
Thanks!
Not sure where to ask, can you play in two or more campaigns at once, just with a different character?
Yes you can!
You can play in as many campaigns as you want and have as many characters as you want.
(DnDBeyond may have technical and legal limitations but conceptually the D&D game has no limits on how many campaigns or characters you can play)
oh, neat! thank you!
I'm a newcomer
Welcome
For the spell Find Familiar. If I am in an out of combat situation, and my familiar is riding on my shoulder. Can I issue a general order to "keep an eye behind me, and alert me if anyone is sneaking up on me"?
I was wondering about any additional uses beyond sending it out for recon. Is this too vague of a command? And my particular familiar can only see 30ft. and can't see invisible targets of course.
Generally a familiar can do what you order them to, if it’s within their ability to do so.
The last part might vary from DM to DM
Not really, it's more of DM's discretion on whether it's too vague
Unless your DM is a living monkey's paw, they typically understand what you mean
The only reason when the DM would intentionally try to misunderstand a simple phrase like that is because they have a DM vs Player attitude, which is an immediate red flag
And the familiar can mentally ping me of their own accord given that it's received this command? Or is this essentially the same question and it's up to the DMs discretion?
The familiar can telepathically communicate to you
So assuming your DM follows that, it can send a message to you whenever something happens
But honestly it's not as useful as you might think
Unless you literally have 0 Wisdom casters in the party, someone is probably going to have 15 in Passive Perception anyways
Since Perception is a broken skill
Thank you for the responses, I see what you mean. I'm using a chameleon that has 30ft. of dark vision and +4 to stealth checks. My DM is great about letting most things fly, is there anything creative to do with this familiar besides the usual familiar things?
It's very unlikely that your familiar would compare to that
Do you have darkvision?
I do yes
Then the 30 ft of darkvision it has isn't useful to you
I think the best thing that it can do is scout ahead
Even if it passes the telepathy range, it can change colors to give you signals
Like it can change to red for "There are enemies ahead, get ready to fight"
Useful for looking past barriers if you don't want to use your action to look through your familiar
Haha, I like that. Though I worry about it standing out with a color when it's supposed to be sneaking. But I'll think on the idea more thank you. --And typically when battle begins, do most people dismiss their familiar or just send them off? I don't want to do that help action spam.
Generally I don't dismiss my familiar because it costs an entire action to do so
Your DM shouldn't try to attack your familiar though
Otherwise they're meta gaming to the highest degree
Right, that mechanically makes sense too since the chameleon isn't doing anything to affect the battle.
Why would you attack some animal that might have been in the middle of the battle by happenstance rather than the Wizard that just casted fireball and incinerated four of your best friends
Maybe they spilled their tea on their favourite robe earlier in the day, and they're in a mad mood
In my game, I rule that no enemy would intentionally harm a familiar unless it is clear that they're under the control of the players, such as doing helpful actions to the players
Otherwise I would be meta gaming since there's no way the enemy would know the animal is a familiar
AoEs are different though, if the familiar is caught in the AoE, oh well
Got it! Thanks so much for the help. At the very least I'll give it a bit of personality so it shines RP-wise besides the scouting
By the way
Your DM rules that your familiar retains the same soul after being resummoned right?
Some DMs don't do that for whatever odd reason and says that the familiar dies forever
My DM is relatively new, and I've been helping with small tidbits of knowledge so I'll pass that along in particular. Thanks.
I havent really played dnd much before and i was wondering where to kind of start. sorry i know thats like a really broad thing to say im just a bit lost lol
@grave sentinel If you look at the pin icon at the top, it has all sorts of resources for new players! D&D can be really fun, but a bit overwhelming at first like all hobbies can be. I would advise to take it slow and first begin with making a character that you really enjoy the idea of. It will help motivate the rest of the learning.
ooo thank you ive been wanting to get into it for a while just didnt know where to start
You're welcome! The pin list is really comprehensive and the first link will start by showing you all the cool things your character can be, I hope you have fun

I wanted to go through a situation I experienced in my last session, since it seems description for the spell Charm Person can be misunderstood.
Our quest was to investigate the recent activities of a nearby orc encampment. My party member casted Charm Person on a wandering orc that he nearly beat to death and did so without ability checks. He then pretended to be his friend and asked him for sensitive information regarding the nearby camp's activities which were evil in nature. The orc confided a great deal of information, which the DM was happy to give as it was an opportunity to give out details pertaining to the story. They're still a bit new and not sure how everything works, and to be fair the same could be said for me.
I can't help but feel that despite the need for storytelling, the spell was used the wrong way. Could I hear your thoughts?
Yeah, the way your DM ruled Charm Person was way too powerful
The spell says that the target regards you as a friendly acquantance
You wouldn't leak sensitive information to a friendly person you just met
But your DM has the final say. If they want to rule Charm Person that way, they can
If you feel like it was less fun that way, that's worth bringing up. Otherwise, no one gets points for following the rules. It's about enjoying the experience.
I see. I think that they're open to understanding spells as intended if given the chance. Based off your understanding, to which extent of information can you get from an individual that you've charmed?
tbh I would say it's less fun that way
Charm Person would be way too powerful as a level 1 spell if you can get anyone to spill important secrets
And it also makes spells like Zone of Truth useless
just my opinion though
Not very much? I think TAS points to the spell's description as an important guideline. It's up to the DM as to how to interpret that.
Little to none, unless you succeed on a Charisma (Persuasion) check to convince them to tell you the information, which you can do with advantage since they're charmed
depending on how important the secret is, the DM can adjust the DC accordingly
I think that's a good key to understanding how it might relate to both the information and the DM. Deciding on a fair DC according to the information, thank you for the suggestion!
Or, if the secret is something they would never share to anyone other than a few individuals, the DM can straight up rule it as "That's impossible, no rolls."
Thank you for this perspective by the way. I appreciate it and agree.
You've both been a great help and easy to understand. Thanks!
Hey heyy, so I am not exactly new to D&D but I have been wanting to DM again. I can't really afford books with this dreaded thing called c o l l e g e looming over me so I was wondering if this is a alright place to talk about homebrew or not? Hopefully I hear back from someone and thank you whoever responds :3.
#880965682462875679 and get the makerspace role for the homebrew chat
#homebrew is more for game mechanics. If you're just looking for story advice, #dm-discussion would probably be a better help (but that also requires a pit stop in #880965682462875679 first. 😅).
Lost Mine of Phandelver is also free on D&D Beyond, if you did want a published adventure:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
how would I scale down LMoP for 2 players?
Not only LMoP actually but basically any module
Reduce the encounter difficulty by half
I would recommend getting more people to play though, especially if you are new
Would 2 sidekicks from Icespire also work? Would that be enough.
Side kicks of the same level as the players will balance out encounters to roughly the same level where they should be, yeah

hi guys!
i'm a dnd newbie looking to start my very first game with my friend, we wanna try out a 2 person campaign or if there's any DM who can help us get to it is ok, we haven't created our characters but all in all i'm trying to find a DM who is willing to bring us to this fascinating world of DND

Check the pinned message here in this channel. Lots of useful links to help get you started.
yea i'm looking at the sources
We have #looking-for-players you can go through and find posts you're interested in and then contact the posters through direct messages.
thanks so much!
alright, erm is it ok for me to post my own request too?
We have #750812887697588356 for that. Just make sure to follow the rules pinned in that channel.
got it, thanks for the kind help!
oh and i wanna ask, is DND beyond a good app for playing the game?
or is there any recommendations for newcomers
The answers you'll get to that question here are a little biased, because this used to be the "DND Beyond" dedicated server, before it just recently pivoted to be the general server for all D&D, but yes, I think the tool is extremely useful
oooo ok ok, i really don't know anything so i'm jumping in blind, so i'm trying to understand dnd by myself with the youtube videos of the past and other walkthroughs like critical role
Also because D&D Beyond is the digital toolset for D&D. D&D purchased it.
ok ok
howdy

When I ask someone to jump a hole and it uses strength and athletics, do they use both modifiers or choose only one? like +3 strength and +5 athletic = +8 to roll. Or only take the +5?
So athletics is a skill that can be used to determine if the character can add their proficiency to the ability check of strength
So if something is a Strength (Athletics) check, that's telling you "The ability modifier to use is strength, and if they have athletics proficiency, they can add their proficiency bonus to the check"
You don't combine your strength modifier and your strength (athletics) modifier, you just use the latter (+5)
Ayo, so I've been in around ten session, so I'm not super out of the loop DnD. I do plan on getting more into it but, I'm worried on what data book I should buy. I don't want to buy one that isn't gonna help me, any recommendations on my first book to buy?
The +5 it shows for Athletics should already include your Strength modifier (and probably your +2 proficiency bonus).
What specifically are you looking to get from this book?
Just a general sense, like classes, subclasses, all that sort of thing. I'm a fan of combat, but I'm also thinking of doing some DM'ing myself.
I'd suggest Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, then.
It comes with a new class (artificer), a bunch of new subclasses, and some handy DM tools.
Ooooh so the character sheet should already have the strength added into the athletics score, That helps alot, didn't know that's how it worked at all. Thank you so much!
do you have the player's handbook? thats ususally the place to start
I do
then you are all set, as the PHB has the bulk of the core rules, all other books are just small variations on those
tasha's and xanathars have a lot of new subclasses, monsters of the multiverse has a lot new races
Does lockpicking count as sleight of hand? Or is it just an action that requires a dex roll?
hi, I'm new
DM's will often call for using sleight of hand to try lock-picking
But the DM can decide that some other skill or stat is more appropriate based on what the player wants the character to do
So I just decide what my players need to use in a logical manner in most cases? nnnnnnnnEAT
That is indeed the power of the DM - decide what rules are in effect and what rolls are needed and then interpreting the results of those rolls.
Strictly by the rules, it's a regular Dexterity check, not sleight of hand.
You would roll the Thieves' Tools if you're proficient with it.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/equipment/thieves-tools
This set of tools includes a small file, a set of lock picks, a small mirror mounted on a metal handle, a set of narrow-bladed scissors, and a pair of pliers. Proficiency with these tools lets you add your proficiency bonus to any ability checks you make to disarm traps or open locks.
normally, lockpicking is done with thieves tools, dex is typically the stat used and if you are proficient with the tools, you add your PB.
a DM may rule that proficiency in a related skill, like sleight of hand, can also grant advantage on the check, if its made with a tool you are profcient in
So lets say I decide my players can use sleight of hand for the roll. Since it is a legitimate rule to use one's proficiency for the Thieves' tools, would I add them both together? so a +5 from SoH and +2 from TT = +7. Is that mostly under my authority (since it is a rule that I added in?). I guess I'm asking what is most logical in that situation
If anything I might just allow dex and thieves' tools for simplicity's sake
The DM can decide what makes sense in the given context. Usually it's just one or the other
dex + thieves tool is the default
you can change it up but its a good basic way to do things
You can only add a maximum of 1 skill or tool proficiency to a skill check. However, Xanathar's Guide to Everything provides a set of optional rules for added benefit if someone is proficient in both a skill and a tool that applies to a given skill check
Advantage. If the use of a tool and the use of a skill both apply to a check, and a character is proficient with the tool and the skill, consider allowing the character to make the check with advantage. This simple benefit can go a long way toward encouraging players to pick up tool proficiencies. In the tool descriptions that follow, this benefit is often expressed as additional insight (or something similar), which translates into an increased chance that the check will be a success.
if you decide to allow sleight of hand to "stack", then the rule suggested in the DMG (I think ) is that it doesnt add more modifiers, it grants advantage
XGTE, not DMG
ah
I totally forgot advantage, so I'll use that; so Dex + tools proficiency. If you are proficient in sleight of hand, I'll add advantage to roll
Thats the recommended way to handle it, yeah
Thank you guys so much! That opens alot of doors to mix things
My pleasure
Your proficiency bonus can’t be added to a single die roll or other number more than once. Occasionally, your proficiency bonus might be modified (doubled or halved, for example) before you apply it. If a circumstance suggests that your proficiency bonus applies more than once to the same roll or that it should be multiplied more than once, you nevertheless add it only once, multiply it only once, and halve it only once.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ProficiencyBonus
Maybe I'm stupid/having a stroke, but I read that like 4 times and I think I'm confused. But if I read it right; They suggest that if someone is proficient in Thieves tools and sleight of hands, I only add +2 once since we dont want to stack the proficiencies?
err add Proficiency once (since higher levels means +2 becomes +whatever, If I remember correctly)
I think we already figured this out and Spam was just a bit late to the party.
you dont stack Proficiency bonus in DnD except for some special features like Expertise that allow you to double it once. Thats all what this quote means
as we talked about above, sleight of hand + thieves tools can be ruled as Proficiency Bonus + advantage instead.
Okay yea, I wont read into that part too much then XD. Thank you regardless, @smoky adder
Hey y'all I'm finally starting my first session on Sunday and wanted to ask for some character advice not advice on how to play or anything just tips to have even more fun I'm playing a hexblade that takes heavy inspiration from illaoi from league being extremely enthusiastic sbout just about anything and being up for any and all fights as well any tips to playing the character or just fun shenanigans are appreciated

The old one got archived.
OOOOH both merged!
They announced it a lot.
But some folks are still finding out. I imagine that’ll be the case for a good bit.
I have the server muted for obvious reasons 😆
I don’t have the money for that what do I put as race then?
Thanks razor
I mean, you can select races you have access to. Your DM may have more content available should you join a campaign.
Thats the thing I’m making a sheet so I can join a campaign
Don’t make a character and expect to play it as-is before joining a campaign.
If you make a character before finding a game, consider it practice.
If you'd like I can create a campaign in dndbeyond, and invite you to create a character sheet for, it will let you export it once you have completed it. I think I have all the content.
Yea i should probably take some rest anyway it’s 1 am
That would awesome
Yea
Hey guys, never played before, just looking to play the game and get drunk with my friends, however all the rulebooks are like 100pages even the basic ones. Is there a rulebook around 5 pages or so just something to let us play the game but still impose some restrictions so it doesnt get boring? like a really short guide
Nothing officially written that I know of, but there are some good youtube series that make things fairly simple.
Handbooker Helper is a great series by Critical Role, that breaks down individual rules into 3 to 5 minute bite sized videos. There are 44 videos in the series, so thats still a few hours of content to go through, but obviously if you want to break down the rules into something as simple as what you are asking for, you're going to be cutting some things out, so you can pick and choose videos to watch from this list that seem interesting, or if you want something explained on the fly while you are playing, if thats how you want to go about it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
If you want a simple TTRPG then there are other TTRPGs out there that isn't D&D. Honey Heist is a TTRPG that's one page long.
This is also a good suggestion, yeah. D&D 5e is meant to be simple, compared to most TTRPGs, but its not really "5 pages of rules and learning while drunk" simple
5E is relatively simple compared to 3.5E and 4E but not relatively simple compared to B/X or other TTRPGs.
depends on the game I guess
might look into honey heist then to be honest because i would like all my friends to understand the rules enough to dm at some point
This place is new territory for me
What place?

I feel like intelligence and wisdom tend to be pretty similar. Everything requiring wisdom, logically seems to require intelligence as well. If I were to give my definition of Wisdom, it would be; Knowledge attained through their own experiences. Following the rules I feel like that wouldn't work.
I.e Why wouldn't Medicine be more INT than WIS? The knowledge of medicine seems to be pretty similar to having knowledge of history or arcana and etc.
I don't mean to challenge the rules, I will gladly use whatever stat is needed for the skill. But my point is, as a DM, how do I distinguish what should take a WIS check or an INT check when the action being made is not something that could be put to one of the skills?
I keep thinking of examples, but I always go with INT for anything that isnt defined by the rules.

Oh yeah no if done 1 or 2 times in a session but thats it. Just finding myself a new session with new people is where i dont know where to go
Hello, a quick question: on my paladin the CD to throw a spell, is 8+competence bonus+ car modifier, but car modifier is doubled since i have competence in it for TS, or CD is not considered a TS.
What edition are you playing? What is TS?
so im confused about something, in goblin's attacks, it says "Scimitar. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) slashing damage." what does the "+4 to hit" mean? i now that hit:5 means that you add 5 to the attack roll, but what is the +4?
the +4 is the bonus you would add to the attack roll, the 5 is the average damage the attack would do if the DM didn't want to roll it.
The +4 is the modifier to determine if the attack hits.
It’d be your d20+4. The 5 is the average damage the goblin deals on a hit. You can either roll the 1d6+2 for damage, or just take the 5 if you need to move quickly.
No problems! I once had a new DM who thought the 5(1d6+2) meant you multiplied the damage you rolled by 5.
yikes, would be some scary goblins
Yeah we asked how the goblin was dealing 30+ damage consistently.
Sorry maybe is only in my native language, ts i think in english is saving throw
Channel Divinity may cause other creatures to make a saving throw, but it does not involve you making one, so this will not be affected at all by whether or not you have Proficiency in Charisma saves
Help would be very nice..

Hello!
I was reading through various sources about the Ranger class and found many talking about a specific fighting style called "Druidic Warrior".
I wanted to research it so I went in the Player's Handbook to search for details, but the only styles I have found were Archery, Defense, Dueling and Two-Weapon Fighting.
I then tried to look in Xanathar's guide to see if it was an "extra" thing, but there's only Archetypes listed there.
Is it a fighting style from older editions (I saw one source pinpointing it in 3.5e) that can be ported over, or am I looking in the wrong places?
Thanks in advance!
It's in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
Aah! I wanted to read that as well, but wanted to first complete these other 2 books, thinking they would include the "basics".
Thanks a lot, I'll start giving it a read now ❤️
The core rules are the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual. Tasha's and Xanathar's both expand the rules by quite a bit, so neither is really "the basics" (though they do allow for some really popular options).
Ah ok got it, I thought I wouldn't want to read the DM and Monster guides to not "spoil" some aspects of the adventure since this will be my first campaign. Just wanted to see what options there were for expading a character / making a personalized playstyle. Again, thanks :)

Hey, I'm trying to get into dnd but this character building stuff has got me confused. Is there an easier way to build a character or could someone help walk me threw the process
Are you just using the written rules? There are video walkthroughs you can follow along with.
Have you tried it on D&D Beyond? If you click "Show help text" before you start, it'll walk you through each step.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
are there any recommended oneshots for beginners?
There's The Wild Sheep Chase
https://www.dmsguild.com/product/170937/The-Wild-Sheep-Chase--A-SingleSession-Adventure
what level does it start at?
It's free...
Wild Sheep Chase is designed for characters of level 4 or 5. 😅
Damnit DMSteve is too fast for me
Winghorn Press, makers of The Wild Sheep Chase, have several one-shots on their site and DMsGuild that are either free or pay-what-you-want. They're generally newbie-friendly.
They're of varying levels between 1 and 5, so if you'd rather do a lower-level one-shot, that's an option.
i'd much rather prefer one that starts at level 1
A Most Potent Brew, then.
it says that it used the basic rules, does that mean some things are offlimit?
I made it!
What damage cantrip would you recommend for a first-time level 1 wizard? Apart from firebolt because I'm scared we'll encounter a lot of fire resistant enemies since its a waterdeep campaign (I dont know anything about it, but "water" is in the name lol). If it helps to know, my other cantrips are mage hand, minor illusion and thaumaturgy!
It means they are designed to only require the free basic rules to play
can you use all the rules, or would that change things?
It shouldn't change anything
i see
You can use any rules you like. It just means you don't need to buy anything in order to run/play the adventure.
also should i show the map to the players, or not?
Toll the Dead is usually considered one of the best damaging cantrips and I'm surprised it's not talked more often
Up to you.
Not that many creatures resist Necrotic and its range of 60 feet is pretty decent
The only caveat is that it deals slightly less damage than fire bolt at the start but beats out fire bolt later on
Some DM folks reveal a map as PCs explore. Some tell the group they should draw the map themselves because it's not the DM's job. Some draw the map loosely as PCs travel.
Ray of Frost , Shocking Grasp, Poison Spray or Thunderclap?
This is usually what I take alongside Prestidigitation whenever I get Magic Initiate in Wizard for the sweet sweet Find Familiar spell
Also Wisdom is a great ability to target, not that many monsters have high Wisdom compared to Dexterity or Constitution
Sadly toll of the dead isnt available for me it seems since I'm only using phb on ddb
i am more specifically talking about the most potent brew map
You don't need to use ddb, you can easily just keep a mental note that you have the spell
And roll the dice manually instead for the damage
Thats a good idea, I roll dice manually rather than the digital ones anyway
Again, up to you. If they're new players, you might do so, but then they might turn it into a video game more than a TTRPG.
And to be honest, ddb also has the problem of not being able to roll the d12 for you, so you're forced to manually roll even if you have it
or you can create a homebrew spell that is a copy of toll the dead, and use that
then i guess i wont until i need it
At 1st level a Wizard is really squishy. Often I think of my backstory or how I'm going to play this character and that helps me choose a spell. There are cantrips that can be useful and creative to get you out of a bad situation without damage as well as support the rest of your party. Are you playing a glass cannon? Go for long range and high damage like Fire Bolt. Are you more defensive? Use spells that can hinder opponents like Frostbite or Ray of Frost. Even Mold Earth can be useful to create difficult terrain for the enemies. I've even used it to weaken a ledge and creatures have fallen. Your creativity is a part of the game. 😉
what's a wondrous item ?
I'd like to add these Boots of the vigilant to my campaign but I don't know when or where
It's one of the categories of magic item that acts as a catch all
the others are quite specific, like weapon or armor or scroll or potion
oh so it's not like unique or something like that ?
no, is more of a general category, so if its a magic item but its not a weapon, armor, etc, it would fall under wonderous item
for example alchemy jug
would starting a level 1 campaign as level 2 with some extra gear make it unbalanced?
It might make things easier for a bit, but not drastically. Some classes get neat upgrades at level 2, while plenty of others are only marginally stronger.
Hi there! I just recently got into dnd, I absoluetly love it and am making a character now~ He is a Mountian Dwarf Palidian, Im a bit lost though in the book, What would my Armor class be?
Would a purely supportive class with little combative abilities be annoying for other players? My idea for my 3rd chara ever is a bard with a lot of study and book knowledge, but not much to really fight with, maybe just a weapon. He's purely just there to supportive with wisdom and charisma, giving healing, inspiration, and utility.
Yeah that’s fine you can be a bard just dancing around the combat buffing people and helping out
Depends on the game
Are you intentionally nerfing your character?
What classifies as 'nerfing yourself'?
Like "I want my character to be weak" and then dump Charisma as a Bard
And making weak choices for no reason at all
Usually that would be a red flag for me, because I don't want to have to carry someone that's just a deadweight because "haha my character is so weak that's so funny lol"
It gets old after two to three sessions
If you're not intentionally nerfing yourself, then that's perfectly fine
Not at all, ^^
He has healing, buffing, and utility that most level 1 bards would have.
Cure wounds, healing words to heal, Bardic insperation to buff others, Light, comprehend languages and Identify to help out of combat. Though his main DPS is just a rapier, so just 1d8.
Yeah, that's usually considered as a "skill monkey" build, which isn't weak and pretty strong in some scenarios, especially utility and skill checks
Let's keep things basic please. Discussions of 'nerfing' yourself etc are best suited to #dnd-discussion or #1045165827068002374
Looks good
Sorry Davyd,
Not really, nerfing yourself is a pretty big pitfall for new players, I don't see how that's too complicated to understand that making bad decisions on purpose is usually bad
I haven't played dnd in like 8 years
Yes really, this channel is for covering the basics of getting started with D&D
Again, Sorry Davyd ^^
You should; it’s still really fun! 😊

thank you! im currently going through the sections of dnd beyond for new players. i guess my main question is how much i should learn before trying to join somone?
Know how to make a character, how ability checks work, and how combat works. That'd be my recommendation.
Hello
this will all be in the new player guide?
you dont need to know EVERYTHING but having a general idea on how things work is appreciated
It's in the Basic Rules, yes.
hi!
There is no exact answer to that. Presumably, your DM should be able to help you out with most of the rules, so the more experienced they are, the more you can rely on them when jumping in. Certainly, the more familiar you are with things, the easier it becomes, but for level 1 play, you can usually get away with learning as you go
and i could find a dm here correct? or at least a game to join?

adding on Colossus, if you are playing a magic caster, reading your spells will come a long way as you wont spend as much time deciding what do do in your turn
awesome! ill put a couple hours into some guides then!
do you think theirs anyone that would be ok with walking me through some stuff with this character creator? maybe its not the first thing i should've done...
I'm at work, so i can't, but there's almost always people around.
would this general vc be a good place to ask people?
most DMs will hold a session 0, where you will create or finish up characters, also flushing out the general campaign guidelines and tone
of course. thers just a lot of things within this character creator i dont really understand
like? maybe I can help (not vc as im also at work)
uhhhhh what does rick and morty have to do with dnd?
it doesnt, its just some extra content, but you can completely skip it
If you're using D&D Beyond, I'd just skip that whole first page. 😅
oh lol
Most of those settings would be at the direction of your DM.
If you don't have a DM yet, it's safest to just stick with the defaults.
would it be acceptable to ask some people in the general vc right now some stuff or would i be an annoyance?
It's an open room. You're welcome to try.
k i shall try it^^
To more directly answer this question, there was a book released called Dungeons & Dragons vs. Rick & Morty. That toggle will show or hide the content from that book.
Okay, hello, so new to this, trying to figure out how all this works. I've been reading the newcomer guides, still trying to understand it all. I've made a rogue character to go along with what I'm reading
If you have any quest about the rules, classes, and such this is the channel to ask in.
Well trying to understand different stuff currently. Like attacking, my roll has to be better than their AC. Like my shortbow has a +4, so say their AC is 12. If I roll a 8 but the +4 makes 12 I hit right? Then the 1d6 is the damage? Does it matter how much over the AC it is to give a bigger damage blow or no?
Dnd
ok so first a d20, then a d6 for me
so strength plus mod plus the weapon modifier right?
uh says to hit
Well I'm just going by this character sheet on the site that it helped form for the character.
Is the eladrin good I just picked it cause I think it’s cool
What are the new One D&D Exhaustion mechanics? I can't seem to find them.
10 levels with a cumulative -1 to d20 rolls (I think...). It should be in the 2nd One D&D UA.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/one-dnd
ok, thanks
I just made a DnD character and I'm really just wondering if any race can be any class
thx!
it can but its always useful to check out with your DM if they allow it, for example maybe they have a low magic campaign so having a wizard might not be allowed etc
Some DMs don't allow certain playable races and/or (sub)classes in their campaigns. For example, I don't allow playable races (and some spells) from Strixhaven, Ravnica, Theros, Ebberon Ravenloft, or Spelljammer in my Forgotten Realms campaign.

I see! I'll talk about it to my dm
What does size mean? Like I get how big you are but height specifics are also fillable
Well height is just how tall you arr
Pg 121 of the PHB has height ranges for races
Playable races are either Small or Medium size.
Size categories also affect whether you can use heavy weapons without penalty, they can also affect how you interact with terrain, whether you can ride another creature. Various other things.
In NPC creatures, it can determine their hit die, damage die, number of squares they take up on a grid.

Yo I'm going into technically my second session ever since everyone from the first never wanted to go again, the new group I'm joining through my coworker uses homebrew characters. If someone could dm and kinda explain how to make spells or magic that is balanced it would be greatly appreciated
tbh, if it's only your second session, you're probably better off just picking spells that already exist in the game.
that's kind of what I was guessing
I have general knowledge because I've wanted to play for so long. The problem is that I understand how they work I just don't know what the damage should be and how it functions
Just read the spell descriptions: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells
Will do, appreciate the response
If you want to try to create a homebrew spell, then you should be familiar with the terms used in spell descriptions
If it does damage, then it ought to do about an much damage that a spell of the same level does, there are typical ranges of damage for levels
Also, being familiar with the spells that exist will save you time in your homebrew. Make sure the spell doesn't already exist, for one.
It would be element damage, the character I'm making does things like using finger guns to shoot bolts of lightning or fire
Fire bolt is a spell that exists
So I can just almost replicate the details of it
Very few spells give you options for the damage type
Why bother? Just use the spell that already exists
Want to shoot a bolt of fire from your finger? Cool, that spell exists already
And It's not exactly a fire bolt, I'm not sure what to call them yet but the idea is behind the actual finger guns
There are a few spells that would work basically like finger guns
Fire bolt, ray of frost, magic missile, eldrtich blast
YOu have to comment in one of the discussions that're there. Only mods can make new discussions.
Because that's a limited forum

do u do only castlevania dnd games???
Hello I'm about to attempt to make my first dnd world I have ideas and concepts
But I'd like some one more experienced to help
I recommend grabbing the DM role from #880965682462875679 and asking in the #dm-discussion
hello
I have been trying to find a new campaign I can possibly be a part of with a character I recently created. However is hasn't been going to well.
Same lol
Yeah, finding a group and scheduling time are the hardest parts about playing D&D.
I just feel like when you try to start a conversation with someone on the server you're ignored. You are the first person on this server who has actually responded.
Honestly feeling a bit of the same. Seems the experienced or those already in games just pass us by. I don't mind however to interact. I'm really trying to find a game to at least get into and if I do ill add u as a suggested player.
I have a couple other people trying to get into a game with me as well. Perhaps if we can find an open DM we can all campaign.
I truly appreciate that I'm not entirely new to DND since I've had a little experience from when my ex taught me how to play and put me in a campaign and since then I've been trying to get back in touch.
I sent you a friend request on discord btw
I'm a new/returning player after having not played for ages. But I also have some experienced friends and new ones as well who are excited to get into a game. And I truly don't mind helping out. I've seen its difficult to get in anywhere myself.
We can kind of help each other because I realized that when I speak on what actions i wanna take I have a tendency to freeze up when I talk
That's just being unsure of actions that are allowed or possible. Ya don't know unless ya try though. And any experienced player or dm should assist at that point with good help and info.
Just depends who ya play with. But my squad we're new to playing it remotely on mobile and some entirely new to D&D so it will be a paced game for newer people with the understanding that we're all working out kinks here and there.
I have only one character available that I can use cause the first character I made was for a campaign that is no more than my second one is for a campaign in planning. So all i have to Calamastia which is my human cleric
Hello, I mean I just made my first, but I'm trying to understand it all as well 😅
What's your current character?
hi i am new what website do you use to create caracters
DnDBeyond is pretty popular around here, as this used to be the server for that site.

most of the groups say that i dont have the role for it
Please don't try to tag random users.
Are you the DM?
Generally the DM is the one that creates the group, not the player
No
Ahh
I mean i really struggle finding a group especially a beginner friendly one :(((
also if you're looking for a group there's #looking-for-players or #750812887697588356
Yea i did that
Still no response from anyone
I was either rejected for being new or just no response after 1st message
Like why is it so hard to find a group
you can technically play solo to get experience
💀no
Or you can play with people irl
Finding a group where the schedules line up—to say nothing of expectations and such—is hard when there are so many people out there.
Casting a wide net ups your chances. Look here, sure, but look at other venues.
yea like i might as well just give up on it
This game is too free style for me anyway
howdy i'm tring to post for any thursday one shots but the server won't give me permission, am i missing something?
Are you following the instructions in the pinned post?
I don't understand the Attack/Save on spells
If it says DEX in there, does the creature that is attacked by the spell need to do a dexterity saving throw ?
or does the caster needs to roll his attack with his Dexterity modifier ?
and even if it was the first option, what would be the DC ?
i don't understand
This would indicate a Dex Save
If you're making an attack roll for a spell, it's always going to use your Spell Attack bonus, which is your Proficiency Bonus + your spellcasting Ability Modifier (Int for wizards, Wis for clerics, etc.)
Question about ancestral guardian barbarian. Does ancestral protectors only latch onto one enemy or can it be multiple?
No classes use Dex as a spellcasting ability
When I do an attack is the number the dmg? Like if I was using a basic sword, it would be a d10 plus strength modifier. So if my strength modifier was 1 and the dice rolled a 7 would the damage be 8?or is the 8 more like representing the effectiveness of the weapon (like the d20 you roll when starting an attack)?
When you make an attack, you roll 1d20 + your attack bonus to see if you hit, if you hit, then you roll the d10 + Str mod [or whatever] for damage. In your example, you would do 8 points of damage
you roll the attack to see if you hit or miss
then if you hit, you roll the damages
but what's the DC in this case ?
