Or, not very good
I actually made a custom dragon specifically for a chase scene
It's uhh
practically unbeatable by basically any party even though I worked decently hard on that stat block
sometimes you make a dragon and don't give it a hit point bar, because, well, this is a cutscene, it doesn't need one
My party's battle IQ genuinely impresses me sometimes
love it when that happens though
tbh just reverse his AC or make him not take damage, duh
immortal enemies with alternate win cons
But that's laaaame
It is valid
But nahhhh
I like to go into detail
Lairs don’t help much.
fair, but then again its a story telling game to some extent yk
The party's "Battle IQ" as you aptly put it, has a far greater role in encounter balance than some CR table
you hit the dragon with a fireball. it doesn't take any damage, but it's blue now. wdyd
start to drink with it
Unexplained reverse AC doesn’t really contribute to the story
yk, share stories at the bar
Depends
an extra legendary action might do a lot since the dragon basically gets an extra move between every turn
something that's also not discussed is how important it is to combine different types of monsters.
Support monsters/front line monsters/etc.
Monsters have roles!
Indeed it does
It's why I'm not scared of making crazy strong enemies, sometimes with annoying gimmicks. I know they'll figure it out
Yeah. Last game I played in me and another player were good at tactics we turned impossible to win encounters into wins.
But the party was also screwed if one of us missed the game. It would be a too
Believe me, give me a bunch of CR 1/4 Goblins and I can TPK you
question is what constitutes a bunch and can I control the environment too
a DM tpking a party is not an accomplishment :V
It's not reversed AC, but I had this trait for an enemy that was quite strong:
Harvest Season. Andromeda does not have a set AC. Instead, there are a multitude of numbers one could get in order to hit Andromeda. These numbers are:
7, 10, 13, 17, 22, 23, 25, 26, 28, 29. Any number that is not any one of these is a miss. If the roll is 30 or above and is a critical hit, then it hits. If the roll is 40 or above, it automatically hits.
Basically, the character, Andromeda, is heavily related to harvesting and seasons (with her magic weapon, a chain with the sickle in its end being heavily related to constellations), and just like how you only harvest certain fruits in certain seasons you can only hit her with a very specific amount of accuracy for her to actually be hurt
And NO they can't roll above 40 if you're wondering, it's there just in case
oh imma steal that thx
No you can't bro
They genuinely can't hit a high level monk 😭
for real though reversed AC, or funky AC, it breaks the language of the game
its not a good idea
Missing the point, so here it is: lower CR monsters on paper, if used in tactical ways, can punch way above their weight
Agreed
theres a lot of little things that we take for granted at the table that are expressed through the language of the game and eroding that is liable to really make things spin out of control
In fact
Screw CR bro
Two parties could be exactly identical fighting the same opponent and just because the players are different the fights would be vastly different as well
It very heavily depends on the table
Or the dice, even
are lower CR monsters going to have the ability to work that tactically without the DM using meta knowledge?
things to consider.
No meta knowledge required
if you say so
Depends on the bbeg
or just beg
Someone that's been beefing with the party for long enough could easily know how they fight
Assuming the monsters plausibly can have tactics
mr dm my druid is a big animal nerd on account of being a druid
Goblins, yes, a bunch of oozes? No
but if your goblins are suddenly Navy Seals imma be suspicious lol
is this... fun?
especially if they start surviving fireballs
but yeah does depend on their boss/bbeg too
Aha - well maybe they had some mysterious BBEG train them to be Goblin Seals, "These Gobbos are way too well-trained, what's up with that?"
lvl 15 Bardic inspiration (max=12) + bless (1D4) + peace cleric bond (1D4) + 19 + fighter superiority die HA!
why do i wanna see Goblin Seals now tho
Same, lol.
lol
As long as it's a one-time thing, yes. I don't plan on using it ever again
You underestimate how fun it is to see their reactions to a 17 hitting and a 27 not.
it's like watching fish struggle outside water
O_o
no this is bad dont do this
okay bad comparison but...
doing a reverse AC to hit in 5e is such a bad thing to do
it just feels like a trick
or being a troll DM
It is a trick
That's
The whole point
Reverse AC what now? THAC0 has entered the chat
Where can I post pictures of BG3 charavter
There's breaking expectations and there's breaking core game rules/mechanics...
yeah that was what i thought too
#dnd-heroforge-etc is the place for that
theres a reason THACO is dead :V
Yes
yeah thaco was weird
1 whole round just to hit someone you could hit anyway 😭🙏
Its dead ? News to me...
Who's thaco?
its been dead for decades...
To Hit Armor Class Zero
To Hit Armor Class 0 - an old way D&D used to calculate to hit
an old calcuation for To Hit, lower AC was better
ew
you wanted negative values
It’s actually pretty reasonable
do you all miss size bonuses from 3.5?
positive AC was a common houserule long before it became the official rule
But why
It doesn't make sense
Though I've never done anything but 5e and 5.5e
Bigger is better is easier to understand
definitely not
idk man
they were so complicated (for 15 year old me)
Yea, one of those things the community adopts, and then later, officialdom adopts
In fairness, as a player, once you knew your THAC0 it wasn't so bad
seeing how people try to minmax weapon sizes in 5e even when its not actually a rule, i am good with less
yeah but they dont know that, and a 40 is just dope yk xD
wait how do you minmax weapon sizes?
get ye huge greataxe, it does 3d12 damage or something because its huge ... and then you have disadvantage but you cancel it out with ... uh ... something
reckless attack ofc
hi guys. my first time here
heya, welcome and have fun
thx. is this a place where i can share my campaign ideas and stuff or is there a different chat for that?
mhh if u specifically want dm feedback go to #dm-discussion if its storybuilding/ worldbuilding #dm-world-building might be the place
otherwise this is for anything that u just want to ask people in general without narrower specifications
if its character ideas or sth #character-discussion
if its stuff that would require changing mechanics #homebrew might be up your alley
Check id:browse to see our many channels for specific D&D topics
Discord likes to hide channels to be "helpful"
Awesome. Thank you guys! 🙂
yeah happened to me the first time I joined, everytime someone shared them via text messages something new unlocked lmao
May depend on how many players you have. 4 players it’s going to hurt a lot. 6-8 players the dragon is doomed.
dragon would eat me if given the chance.
Yeah dragon vs one pc dragon might win. Dragon vs oni, oni wins
you're very small (for a dragon)
Dragon vs bladesinger bladesinger has dragon for lunch
Determined Bladesingers were way over powered
Hello all! Thought id come give greetings
Greatings weewee
Hallo
I have just been creating characters since I cant play dnd currently lol
So real
Working 5 10s a week, and days off are busy lol
So I just found a site to print out Warlock spell cards for free. 98 pages later.
Hey! How did your session go Howlingatmoon?
It was a bust. The guy who owns the shop where we were going to play got a migraine and never showed up to let us in. It was after hours. He never let anyone know so we ended up standing outside the store waiting for over an hour. The DM called it by then. But we rectified the problem for next month. The DM is getting a key to the shop.
But it gave me an opportunity to get to know the group of guys better, so I feel a lot more comfortable now. They are a great group and I forsee having a lot of fun with them.
:]
I'm sorry it was a bust, but im glad it went well otherwise
Nice way to make it a positive situation. Hope thr next session goes smoothly
my dnd party
-hyper active happy rogue/sword sage with tourrete
-a slow talking murder tortle.
-a old senile dude with memory loss
-and a grumpy bitsjy warlock (atm) that tries to leads the party that failed on moment one
ngl the flaws are so hilarious
sounds like an awesome party
my dnd party (typing!!!!)
- elf with good hearing (she’s cool and good at healing!!!! idk much about her yet)
already insulted the headwizard🤣
- my bsf’s character (aasimar or however you spell it) who is half-seraphim + came from acolyte background
im playing the rogue🤣
- a dwarf who stole a magical book and also kidnapped a child (and gave the said child a dagger …)
nerk ily 🥹🥹🥹🥹
- a half-elf fighter traumatized soldier guy who came from another country or wtv
Imagine if we combined vicious mockery with a healing spell, healing mockery
nothing is stopping you from making healing word use insults
vicious mockery on my rogue😵
GET BACK UP! YOU OWE ME MONEY!
Oh yeah it IS healing word so
SLAP!
wheres my 5 bucks
If you die your a chicken
nah, thats when DDB says Cure Wounds: Damage
nah honestly guys. take tourrette as flaw for your char. give it an dc check and enjoy it. its truly hilarious.
her favourite word is potato-face
probably not best to wear difficulties and disabilities like a hat
so what if u turn ur healing word into a the tic of tourrette so u accidently keep healing ppl👀
nope not always. combat wise even no. but rp is briliant
... no, even in rp
because?
thats a bit insensitive if youre just doing it for the sake of doing it
It's not really funny either, no
It's genuinely a very troublesome thing for people who have it
its because my dm wanted us to have a flaw no matter what it was? a genuine flaw?
Idk it dosent feel right
... that makes it so much worse imo
there are flaws outside of mental disabilities
^ yeah
like? a dismemebered arm?
It feels like mocking smth people struggle with
why do you have to go for disabilities everytime
A Flaw doesn't have to be a physical or mental disability
its a fantasy game relax
...
Just because its a fantasy game doesn't mean it's not insensitive
just because its fantasy doesnt mean its not outright disrespectful
depends on the ppl u play with
thats as bad as if someone used racial stereotypes and their reasoning it by saying its just fantasy
I mean, I guess, but if you want to use said flaws with characters, you shouldn't make a joke out of them
so u suggest everything thats slightly disresepctfull or not oke so to say shouldnt be in it?🤔
Bruh
theres a diference between being respectful and saying you should take X disability as a flaw or your characters
Wdym it's hilarious 😭
Treating a mental disability like a joke isn't SLIGHTLY disrespectful
I guess some people dont understand
You know what. I'd rather be the white night in this scenario then going into a public place saying nonsense lol
there are respectful ways to integrate disabilities into your character. just sayin. you don't have to go into it as a joke
"Hey guys, my character has a mental disability and instead of treating it with respect, I do it for laughs!"
Definitely shines a certain light on you as a person.
One flaw i usually do is like have em have a missing eye or smth. But its often for a good reason
Like losing it in battle and gaining a new one by your god or smth
It's not "White Knighting"
Its having decency as a person.
There's a thing called ablelism (ablism?) you should definitely look into it.
not even gonna debate if its decency.
also, theres people here who are on the spectrum of neurodivergency here
i myself have ADD
im not gonna start saying yall should give chars ADD or ADHD
If you had to live with tourettes as a person, I'm sure you wouldn't find it funny.
another person i know has it. and find it funny
So because one person does now its suddenly okay?
Yeah, ngl, that just sounds mean
there's certainly situational humor that can come from disabilities, but it's important to ask if your laughing as someone in the gallows, or the gallery. or in other words: are you punching up or down?
its good theyre taking in good faith and not taking it as an insult, but thats not the case for everyone
yea well its our campaign played how we play it. cant keep in mind the whole world because you felt like its not ok?
it's a public forum, you're not immune to being criticized
You can yea, but it doesn't mean we can't be critical of it
It's almost like people are allowed to have opinions if you share something in public 🤔
What is the point of forcing characters to have disabilities?
sure, but when youre doing it in a public space, there needs to be some... whats the word for toning it down? im having a bilingual moment
decorum
its fine you can be. but i really dont think the way your guys are tbh.
i dont take offensive if you use it as a way to have more fun a game. who knows what i have?
compromise??
no, it starts with a d.... and its not decorum
Decency?
ugh, gimme a moment to go through a thesaurus
There really is no helping some people it seems 😭
likewise. its a game. would u go the same way at it if it was a different game?
Yes
Im really not surprised anymore.
ohhh man better dont look on steam
In ANY game, I would like disability to be treated with nuance and care.
sits back and puffs a cigarette and sips coffee
Yeah it definitely shouldn’t be done as a joke
there needs to be discretion!
There's the word
AGREE!!!!!!
I dont think it neccessarily needs to be explored with nuance
Just dont be like "haha this guy is different isnt that funny"
its a flaw. then it packs out to be funny in this way its how it is
yea?
look at it from a narrative perspective for a second. flaws are utilized in the game because they add an interesting part of a character's narrative. if your character's "flaw" is that they have Tourette's, what does that add to the character that's narratively interesting?
if you don't have the foresight to see how it could be insensitive, then i challenge you to at least see how it could just be plain lazy writing
Yea on top of being offensive, it just seems lazy
if its a young kid doing it i think it should be handled w more care, since they probably dont know its insensitive, but if you are AWARE its insensitive and ableist 🤩✌️
i tend to be more critical of how games portray race and culture, especially if its Asian leaning, or specifically based of the Phillippines
People should be accepted for who they are and not made the butt of a joke.
attempts to mic drop but trips on the mic stand and falls down 😁😁
A flaw shouldn’t be funny
due the backstory i written as a first.
2nd. why should be insensitive. theres SO MANY things that are sensitive any flaw at this point is a no no or ppl TAKE offensove in an FANTASY game
What are we talking about?
Does anyone have an idea of defeating mind flayer (like actually defeating it physically, not just closing gates and delaying it)
Real scientific stuff
Slice
scientifically, we dont know that mindflayers are made of
ableism (scroll up if you want to see where the convo started im super tired i cant help im sorry 😭😭)
to reiterate a previous point: you can integrate disabilities into a character without it being inherently offensive. as you're describing it, the way you're integrating tourettes into your character is very tone deaf.
getting attacked by ppl because i took an flaw they dont like basically
It’s ok.
I just think of whatever octopi are made of
Ok well that’s obviously biased could someone give a less biased description.
so?
Don't get me wrong
There are people with disabilities who take it and make it their own (there are fantastic disabled comedians and hosts of all sorts of thing)
But, it's something that takes a LOT of self-confidence and not everyone is okay with being the butt of a joke just because they're different
right, but thyre from the far realm, which means our laws of physics and science and biology arent gonna be the same
it is haha ngl
It's not an attack. It's a criticism.
Yeah, and that's how the story proceeds about finding a way to defeat aka kill it.
It like a hivemind kind of thing kind of a brain theoretically
"I'm getting attacked because of I gave a character tourettes as a flaw and I play it for laughs"
Hewwo I have a small question: Idk if it was this server or the German server where some players shared they're books... I can't find it so I wanted to ask: Was it this server or the German server 🥲
you can integrate disabilities into characters, just treat them with care. for example if you give a character ptsd due to trauma you wouldnt be like ‘haha flashbacks!!!! funny!!!!’ at least i hope
That sounds not great.
i mean, you can try to kill their elder brain leader
well, you're right that i can't make you care about something you don't want to care about.
a thing that i usually only have to say to children.
Literally a fallout 4 message pops above:
Everybody disliked that
True true. I wonder what would happen if a mindflayer got a tadpole if thats even possible
that would be like if you put a baby in a human
i said its funny due what situations that can arise in how it can end up
and not through the normal way
I don't get the humour from that
What's the joke here?
Oh we still talking about this
I mean I don’t think you need Tourette’s if your goal is physical comedy.
Chat who else has played a redemption pally
Yeah but how, theoretical physics we create a wormhole to reach their realm(planet), it makes a psychic connection with u and kills u
"Lol isn't it funny when my character ticks or says stuff out of their control?"
How does it generally play
Is that the joke?
now ur changing litterly what i just said
I suppose the joke is just saying random words at random times but i dont really understand whats so funny
Not me. I don’t even know what that is.
ok, what you have to realize is that:
- dnd is not a physic simulator
- dnd is a game
- its a game with heavy focus on combat
- magic is a thing
Paladin with oath of redemption
i dont know what that is to be completely honest 😭 this is our first campaign
Cool. And no I have not.
Its...ehhhhh. Not great when it comes to its tenents
Sadness
as someone with disabilities: there is absolutely humor that can come about my symptoms. it is also very easy to tell when someone sees humor because they see my disability as a spectacle, rather than having enough sensitivity and understanding to find humor out of the irony of the situation.
oath of redemption is the most support and healing oriented paladin, its the peace cleric of the paladin
It wasnt a fav of mine
I found a really cool leather bound spell book for cards on Amazon. I'm going to order it payday.
noice
its.. not? like i said. the situation it creates its funny. its a huge drawback on my char itself. never intend to play as a goal in mind.
But we are not involving the magic in it.its our choice right .
We are just mere humans, may be we can consider the most intelligent ones for creating that wormhole thing,
ok what
We all know that the best Paladin is Oath of Glory
I mean I joined the convo halfway so I don’t really know what’s going on.
Peace clerics thing is emboldening bond right
I feel like redemption is more protecting
Yes
so, are you just playing commoners???
look. its not the tourrettes that funny. its the situation that creates it. Ots not making fun OF it. its the situation it creates it
Yes,but intelligent ones.
Look youre not winning this argument
find stronger people to do the slaying
yea its good no worries
Its not gonna go anywhere
Commoner Engineering
im not trying to win an argument. just explainimg what it is
thats. really the smart thing to do if youre commoners trying to hold back a mind flayer invasion.
A lovely Timezone y'all!
yall are not going to live that long
Eat em
volo says they taste bad
Commoners cant afford adventurers
It's alcohol o'clock for this creature.
/silly
thats what their governments are for
They may taste bad buuuut nothing a lil seasoning can fix
It's not about finding stonger ppl,it's about making a real interesting story, and finding the answer of how.
Hah, yeah one of my friends was also out drinking this evening
ok, well all i have to say is that youre playing far from the norms of dnd, so cant really help you there
then can you understand the situations it can create because of it? good or bad situations, funny or not?
Best way to "create a wormhole"?
Put a Bag of Holding inside of another Bag of Holding.
the issue we all literally have is you treating it like merely a hat to wear
yes, i can. and it seems like you have some understanding of that as well. but you oughtta see that how you were talking about it at the beginning of the conversation can easily be seen as insensitive and not fully representative of what you're intending.
i should add more context next time😅
but that doesnt even 100% gaurante theyll not return. they can and are known for travelling through planes
Me putting a Portable Hole trap forgetting my PCs have bag of Holding
thats a good trap
indeed! topics that affect a lot of people, like disabilities, deserve all the nuance we can afford 🫶
Hmmm, I feel like that may have unforseen consequences....
Best kind.
It wouldnt be that interesting if we just say we have a magician who will make psychic connection with mind flayer while the fighter kills the defenseless body using clerics superstrong weapon.
i disagree
Wait what are you trying to figure out again?
interesting is also a case by case basis and is subjective.
I like to imagine whenever you appear in chat the g-man appears behind whoever you're speaking to
yea its not that im trying to make fun of it.
wording isnt my best at all. i can use the excuse card of "not first language". but thats feel rather pathetic.
due the wording it derailed while i thought it was understandable where i came from
My Divine Soul Sorcerer killed an Eldritch Lich and himself by using a ring of three wishes to create a temporary blackhole.
It also destroyed the Liches entire castle, which was its Phylactery
you can make interesting stories with powerful characters, thats literally what dnd is built to do
But think about we start the story blank as commoners, and go on finding a way to first reach to it,ppl suggest 100s of ways and among them a way super interesting pops out to lead out the story ,and continued
apology if so still. not my intention😵
i would rather play Call of Ctuthlu for that vibe
How is palock or waradin? Whatever the name for paladin and warlock multiclass is
Oh I recall that was one of your characters who sacrificed themselves
the text based medium is chockful of situations that can cause miscommunication. it's why i always encourage people to explain themselves and add context, especially context that might feel "implicit" in face-to-face conversations
Petition to call the multiclass padlock!
Yup!
The other one sacrificed himself to hold off a lich so the party could escape the shadowfell
I agree with this
yea. something i gotta work on. not only here. bin years a struggle for me personally lol. but hey im learning. some day ill get there
Dnd in not constrained to the norms right. It just goes on.
Likewise...
dnd is heroic fantasy
Something with you and sacrificing yourself against liches
K'ura (Aaracokra Divine Soul Sorcerer)
And
Jabal (Earth Genasi Noble Genies Paladin)
Both died for the greater good of their friends 😎
what ur suggesting is something similar to Stranger Things, which is not heroic fantasy
Yeah but playing it as a 3 hr campaign remove the great pleasure we can have with the story to move at its own pace and conditions
What can I say?
Liches love me
The holy always did have a tendency for sacrificing
you can say that of any campaign, i do not get the relevancy of this point
Oh, My Paladin wasn't a holy individual, hd did it out of the pride of the Earth Elemental people, he refused to run
Well I wouldn't call trying to kill you love... But sure... Let's say that
I think you should be thrown at Vecna and Acererak, for another few sacrifices
My Divine Soul Sorcerers character Arc was complete.
He was a fiend warlock, broke the contract that he was stuck in after defeating his patron in combat, earned divine favor and sacrificed himself lol
So paladins get their powers from their oaths but where do the oaths get the powers. Do the gods just bless em
If our characters our the greatest mage , the most feared fighter , obviously we would defeat any monster, but think of like finding a way, like really finding a way, which isn't written somewhere.
That's gonna be mindblowing
You tried to kill me
But you love me /joking /silly
im fairly sure ive already established i cant help with your scenario there mate
if im a commoner, im not trying to fight eldritch horrors
I would
And I'd win
my mind is simply not that expansive/malleable to contain all that stuff im trying to supress
"Jokes on you, im into that"
We get married, simple
Actually I have a very curious observation guys... The new Ravenloft book says it stats 17 different dark lords and names Cthulu as one of the examples.... I find that very interesting....
And now i get an Eldritch HusbandWife
Commonwr doesn't mean a 12 y/o sitting up in school. It could be like a man spending 20 years of his life in libraries to figure out the old religious texts to fight the devil kind of analogy
where did i say children? im an adult myself in carpentry
THE BEST CARD EVER
I played for the first time in like a year and I had fun too
Whaaaat you don't want to fight an eldritch horror as a carpenter?
My Lawful Good Goliath Monk has a Demon Lover
Time for my next character to have an Ilithid lover
only if i get to bash their heads in with the sledgehammer
Or eat them
Sledgehammers..
Yes
Carpentry at its finest
you would not believe how many times we have to bash walls to be within the lines
also, our main tool is just a handheld sledgehammer
You're a handheld sledgehammer 🔥
as hard headed as i am, its not that hard
I think everyone has wanted to bash something in with a sledgehammer before
I ship it
Thank you :3
Don't encourage him...
Encourage me.
I get stronger
So u make sledeghammers in ur carpentry studio?😅
im a framer
we use sledgehammers to bash walls into place
That's kinda cool for a storyline.u can make a story on a char with sledgehammer. Fantasy doesn't always need to mean fairies and dragons.
you try moving 30 ft walls to make em square and level with the foundations, or moving roof trusses
ive made several fighters and barbarians with mauls and warhammers yes
and if it doesnt have faeries and dragons, count me out, im here to play Dungeons & Dragons not John Dungeon
Dungeons & Dungeons
That defines u just wanna get away from ur own life gul
How about fairy dragons! (Insert censored sponsorship or something)
ive used them like once lol
Could I have a fairy familiar?
dude.
That is escapism yes! A very frequent thing in dnd and TTRPG communities
if i wanted a different flavor of fantasy, i would not be in the dnd server playing dnd
you dont see me in other ttrpg servers for a reason
either ask the DM or get pact of the chain somehow and get the Sprite familiar
I see you in my dreams
I mean well I wouldn't exactly say dnd has the best dragons
its almost like i wanted this specific flavor of fantasy
Don't u wanna play a urself better version in a dnd game in the real world?
my only complaint about dragons is that it aint monhun level of lore or has lungs in 5e
Tokii what does that even mean here
no.
I dunno, you know me...
I'm a creature
Whay
because its my preference? much like how you have your own??
Like u seem a quite experienced right?
Didn't u even tried it once
Any tips on sorta making a TTRPG? I wanna make one for something like Bleach or Invincible to play with a group of friends
Also, im mostly a DM. I dont have the time to play as myself
I like hamburgers and dislike spinach! Why? Idk I just like hamburgers more
At best, i had a fighter monster researcher who was a play on my name, Ty Mothrim
wasnt a self insert tho
Asking why someone likes their flavor off TTRPG the way they do seems redundant in my opinion. Also usually self inserts are frowned upon. At least from my experience
I refuse to play humans. I’ve been doing that my whole life. Give me elves and genasi please.
Today a friend of mine, running Curse of Strahd, told me that the PCs, well fortified in a house, saw Strahd outside, exchanged insults, and one of them said "why don't you come in here and prove that you're so big"
1000 iq play
pfffft
... Why are people so bloody stupid?
"Why don't you come here and kiss me on the mouth, Strahd?"
She told me that, I facepalmed so hard I think I need a neurologist.
Don't invite the vampire man good loooord
Your about me is hilarious
Thanks!
Which one?
He has three big toes 😔
... eyo
All three in the mouth
EYO
Cackling
Fair enough 😔
You're chill
We're unofficially best friends now though
Awe how sweet
anomaly …
can I ask something? I'm new to a table like for two weeks with their characters being fleshed out, seem to have repor and have knowledge of the world.
Is it normal to feel like an outsider sometimes? How did you help yourselves with that?
tmc vaguely referenced …..
Time to Vague-max
The real treasure is the friends you made along the way
I think too many franchises use the word anomaly for it to be a reference to a single thing
I sat in last session for like a full hour without speaking because I couldn't find a good moment to interject and join in.
The real treasure is the trash you found
Me :]
Man, I should play a Goblin Glamour Bard one day
It's literally me
Definitely normal. You have to be proactive. If you see the opportunity to help jump in. Maybe it’s just offering to make meals at camp or sharpen someone else’s blade. Share anecdotes when it might lend wisdom.
The real price of playing dnd isn't the books or anything, it's being together with a group and feeling your brain cells slowly melt away after repeated aneurysms
Truth.
Believe it or not, i try to get my groups to avoid making dumb choices
It just feels weird, I'm not a very outspoken person so I'm trying to find space to speak but someone else starts speaking so I'm just in silent mode.
I choose not to believe it
Oh damn it, her Curse of Strahd stories are getting worse. I'm on the verge of a panic attack. A magical oracle told them something was "on a nest of raven", they find a building swarmed by ravens everywhere, enough to block out the sun, and they don't even think to check?!
me fr
Maybe be more descriptive in combat. Paint a vivid picture of your character and others at the table will grow curious about what they’re doing outside of combat.
I'd rope in the DM if you're unable to be assertive yourself. I think a DM should be cognizant of how much spotlight everyone is getting, and if they aren't aware, point it out to them!
Does anyone have some tips for making a backstory? I've been dmming for some time and I've forgotten how to write one lol.
(Thinking of doing a circle of stars druid currently)
You are not that stupid, take it back. Nobody insults my DM but me. Not even my DM.
Three sentences: 1) What are your origins? 2) What shaped your history? 3) Why do you adventure?
what even is the purpose of the beast master ranger, I just got inspired by a friend talking to me about it and I checked the subclass features. It seems awful, like gameplay wise and minmax wise
:D
The moment I was spoken to someone brought up speaking to my character I was almost shocked. They asked for the elf(character isn't an elf because hasn't told them yet.) I just yelled. "Wait me?"
are you looking at the 2014 PHB one?
This happens when u don't plan about the storyline or play up pretty obvious dnds
nope, i use 2024 rules
its pretty damn good
why do you think so?
im playing one rn, and i have a player as one
oh how are you making it work? best I can think of is playing wis focused
The massive action economy between you and your beasts is a lot, and it also has great utility and mobility
I'm a fellow player :p
I am doing WIS focused, shillelagh and bonking
Can you do anything special with the action economy from the beast? Doesn't it take one of your attacks?
If you chose to replace one of your attacks. You can command it as a bonus action to make an attack of its own. At level 7, you can also have it take a Bonus Action to essentially Cunning Action it with that same BA
Oh it can also give the Help action as a BA too
I feel like I'm having imposter syndrome with my table.
Wait so you have to replace one of your attacks AND use a bonus action
No
Why do you say that, shinx?
I played dnd in school, actually it wasn't real dnd game more like carrying the story forward realtime, we had play for weeks with the same storyline becoz it would eventually become so interesting and nobody would want to finish it...
You can either replace an attack or use a bonus action to command it to attack
Think of things the dm could use to add to the story. Things that could come up in game.
that sounds like a DM skill issue
Lets say i play ranger and get shilellagh and i guess a knife, the best i think you can do is attack with the club twice then with the nick EA use it for beast command
but even that sounds meh
i use a qstaff
But the beast's attacks are pretty ok
We didn't talk about fairies gul😂,
We made a real interesting story with a real aroma of dialogues and emotions
using a club can give you basically a free action
especially if its Beast of the Land
qstaff can knock prone
yeah i wish they had special attacks or abilities outside of the mini features
You have to use a club for dual wielder
Land has a built in charge
and Sky has Flyby
the beast also has its own reaction as well, right?
i meant like how octopi can grapple and stuffs
nothing is stopping yer beasty from Grappling, they have decent STR scores except for Sky
more efficient if they grapple as an OA though, to keep enemy there
Just not being able to engage with the world in game and everyone else having the knowledge of the world. I feel like I'm always playing catch-up. That I'm just trying to have knowledge but I don't have it.
i also think rangers dont do much with their bonus actions, too
except like, maybe HM, but thats a set up spell
I probably used the wrong words to describe it. But I just don't know where I fit right now.
Often times I wonder if the things I think are important to my character, or why I think they are important are the same things the DM see as important. I know he's putting in alot of effort to craft a storyline for every player and I want to see what he's come up with, but I worry.
Im looking at my Beast Master's BA's its all from Hobgoblin, Shillelagh, Zephyr Strike, and HM
Didnt take Ensnaring Strike or Hail of Thorns
You can always start that conversation!
I just need to force myself to not be uncomfortable I just feel weird.
Like, when I spent my free time at the festival playing with the children, did he read that as "a man who's trying to get back his lost youth" or "a man who is longing to be the father he never got to be"
idk if im explaining this right but I don't mean just basic stuff I mean actual new abilities like a whale beast of the sea being able to shoot water for utility and damage or a wolf beast of the land being able to have a pseudo pack tactics idk. Even grappling isn't possible depending on what the beast actually is. For example, a beast of the sea whale shark can't really grapple thematically, no?
Fine gul, don't u have ur work tomorrow sleep up now
what are you on about
Ur sledeghammers will miss u if skip the work tomorrow
Monsters have a special caveat where they dont need hands
what? its 6pm where i am
I know, but it feels weird, like I'm saying "This is the story I want you to tell"
Like, in game or just all the time?
I think you can make a request but recognize the DM has the right to decline it.
thematically
California?
whale sharks also just. Can swallow creatures
No, Alberta
It's probably a good thing that beastmaster beasts are relatively simple, just to keep combat flowing
could just make a table
also, even with the changes to 2024 monsters, Beasts in general are shit (ask Moon Druids)
I can vouch for that. almost got swallowed by one
the animal kingdom is a GINORMOUS list of animals
yeah
im still sad that giant eagles are no long beasts. But it kind of makes sens, i guess
in groups of familys and shapes, then have make a section where a dm decides which specific attack they get
i dont think you realize how modular and extensive they would have to make it
to be able to thematically fit every animal
They really wouldn't have to make it that big I could probably make a list
flavor is also free :]
There are so many classes of animals. Mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, etc. And so many in each class. The list would be massive.
so glad you didnt say FIsh lmao
Thats true but I was also including utility
I think crate just wants some unique abilities, right? Other than just "Attacl"?
Not to mention that extinct species in our world are also a thing in dnd
fish is not an animal
not even a biological term lol
like vegetable!
Yes, a fish is an animal. Biologically, fish are classified as aquatic, gill-bearing vertebrates (animals with an internal backbone)
U should get back to 8th class textbooks bro
I'm not your bro, friend
Basically all the time. I know it's just me who needs to settle in a bit more just feel like the outcast.
Fish is an animal.lol
its not a true biological term/category
Yes, "animal" is a foundational biological term. In science, it refers to any multicellular, eukaryotic organism that belongs to the kingdom Animali
Every single species in animal kingdom is considered as an animal. Right from sponges to humans
Hey folks! Please keep things civil and on topic
You'd think an entire subclass would make the companions more unique i guess? They say they're somewhat magical:
You magically summon a primal beast, which draws strength from your bond with nature.
The most magic I see is sharing spells at super late game, resummoning, and changing damage type from P/B/S to force.
i dont see how those two are mutually exclusive
Not sure we need to dive that deep into scientific categorizations...
Its only in your head you feel left out or looked down on.
Just try your best, try everything you can. And dont you worry what they tell themselves, when you're away.
-# im also not the one who said fish arent animals
There's nothing for u to see in there, its what it is.
Seriously though, it just takes some time. :]
I dont think you;re alone in feeling awkward
Animals are multicellular, eukaryotic organisms belonging to the biological kingdom Animalia
In other news I'm hype to use a pair of green dragons tonight to try and wrek my players in my campaig
Dragons aren't animals but sure are creatures
im having to flashbacks to that level 16 oneshot
I feel like I'm going crazy too because beast of the sky seems like a slightly better version of a familiar 😭
What age category?
familiars cant attack (usually)
yeah, hence slightly better
If dragons existed ,they would have been categorised under animals only
BoSky damage is kinda bad
they have more AC and HP than one
So GOT got it wrong?
Adult
assuming Game of Thrones, thats a different media altogether
Yes. Everything alive is either an animal, a plant, a fungus, a bacteria or a protist.
Obviously this is not a useful framework for D&D
cuz magic
Let's move eh?
Back to D&D
Not scientific categorizations
I have corrupt dryads riding the dragons
Can’t wait for my players to get to that stage yet
Hyopthetical situation.
You are visiting a chromatic dragon tomorrow.
They know you are coming and will NOT hurt you if you can bring something from our world that they will want to add to their horde.
What do you give them?
what do i have?
Whatever you have in our world
you also have like, 5 grand to buy something new if you dont have anything worthy
so maybe like a used car or a fancy laptop
limited print run 3rd edition monster manual, 100%
Oh, whatever I have?
Probably a nice book of poetry - I think they'd find it amusing and engaging.
Phone? its a small device that has access to a near infinite source of information
a lava lamp
Yeah I'm dead. I was thinking some nuclear material, hoping the cancer would kill the dragon
do you have games on your phone?
... not anymore
do NOT give a dragon enriched uranium
No way am I ever giving any of my books to a dragon. I will die first
realizes im an adult now
i wonder if a dragon would enjoy a gacha game
... they would probably torch the headquarters and demand all their profits
if metallic dragons are based on metals then we can have a uranium dragon
theres dragons. then theres capitalism
That's what any 8 y/o guests son asks me
“Oh great and fearsome worm, accept my offering” and it’s just my comic collection
book fort
fanon
ooooh. fanom
we do have mercury dragons tho
Think of how many early researchers of radioactivity have died horrible deaths researching it. I say that's not so bad a move
Can dragons get cancer? You’d think that’d be a bigger deal seeing as they’re biologically immortal for 1000 years
Not immune to diseases, not immune to poison.
if a lobster cant get cancer, i dont think a dragon can
Red Dragons live in volcanoes, and yet I’ve never heard of one with lung disease
It might be a long shot, but it's a shot
i dont see that ruling out cancer
just lung cancer
i dont think dragons should be on the internet
also like, door dash could be dagnerous for them
they could order so much stuff
thats what shapechange and minions are for
it's interesting that mercury dragons are considered 'mentally unstable' because real-life mercury causes brain damage
It doesn't even rule out lung cancer. It rules out smoke-caused lung cancer.
they can turn into a humanoid form i think?
and also minions
What??
They just have a kobold who switches from Coco melon and ordering UberEATS
puffs a cigarette
Whhhhhattt?
Just because volcanic smoke does not cause lung diseases in red dragons, does not mean they cannot get lung diseases at all
what did i even come back to lol
nice
can dragons get cancer
Do u guys even what cancer is???
What kind of stupid discussion is this
maybe one of us is a dragon right now and no one even knwos
gem dragons are based on gems (minerals) so there could be an asbestos dragon
i think dragons are all spellcasters
Dogs suffer severe toxicity from onions, right? I do not. Does that mean that nothing is severely toxic to me? Of course not
y-yeah definitely
"I'm sorry Mister Smaug. It seems like breathing fire and smoke is bad for your health."
we do not need gogmazios
arent humans the only ones who recreationally turn every toxin into spices
what's your favorite kind of dragon?
I don't quite understand the point you're making
its a joke
Are there doctors for dragons?
We have yet to turn mercury into a spice, or arsenic.
Dr. Dragon
oh wait, Dolphins pass around pufferfish
Lemurs and dolphins do this too
3rd edition also had ferrous dragons which are pretty cool
I think house from the hit tv show House could diagnose a dragon
yeah, just remembered dolphins do pufferfish and lemurs do centipedes
Yes but they do it because it's toxic.
Do u know about bahamut?
from final fantasy?
Same way some humans do liquor.
elephants also eat fermenting pumpkins
there are pumpkins in africa?
Ik this is late but isnt he like a deity in a way?
Yeah the greyhawk
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10581541/
I have been lied to.
The inebriation of wild African elephants from eating the ripened and rotting fruit of the marula tree is a persistent myth in Southern Africa.
sits in a pumpkin patch waiting for the elephants
ah
We need to work on your definition of fun
Man, adding stupid stuff to your otherwise serious campaign has to be one of the best benefits that DMs get. Also, hello gang!
I need to know what is the blade of luck like huh.
I read it's first ability and was "like huh I bet the second ability will allow you to give someone bad luck when you hit them with an attack, making it so that have disadvantage on there d20 test, this is a really cool thing once pre dawn, this is a bit of a high rarity for something so simple but cool." then I looked down and saw 3 wishes and I was the most confused ever in my life like where did that come from how is reshaping reality a lucky thing? I don't get it, I was also so confused when I saw the d3 I was like "really why not just a 1d4 is this recourse really so powerful that it must be limited to just above a coinflip." then I saw the recourse and it all made sense really.
its called a luck blade because whoever gets one is extremely lucky
I guess lol
but isn't there already like a wish ring. (I might just be remembering and overlord thing.)
why not make it a sword too
There is. Not quite called that
Ring of Three Wishes
Also a ring of djinni summoning that could be considered a ring of wishes
my wizard used a luck blade to cast a (mostly) unrestricted Wish at the conclusion of the final boss fight of his campaign
he could've ascended to godlike powers but used the wish to bring back a party member who'd just died in the fight
You can't wish for more wishes, sure, but could you wish for something that grants wishes?
does it summon genies that have wish?
yes, but you might get monkey pawed
and lose the ability to cast wish
Genies are the worst way to wish for things
Not if I have my lawyer draft the wish.
they almost always twist the wish
Maybe. It summons a "particular djinni".
"Times up, im heading out"
is it from... a certain anthology?
Whether or not that particular djinni is one that can cast wish is for the DM to decide
If the genie doesn't make a time limit clear at the start then it's fair game.
Dao & Efreet would absolutely screw you, Marid might, Djinn are the least likely
but most of the time they all are less reliable than just casting wish yourself
Oh please people, just use wish to duplicate a spell, why do you bother?
I once had a character idea for bard. They were a lawyer that would review contracts and wishes between mortals and extraplanar beings
there is a ring of 3 wishes and a sword of luck that grants 3 wishes, is there like a genin acme I should know about?
It's simply almost never worth using wish for anything but spell duplication
were they an eloquence bard
that'd be fitting for a lawyer
just head to the Elemental Planes
I had a necromancy wizard who did the same thing. He called his undead servants "Paralegals."
What if I want to see the lady of pain?
get flayed
"I wish the lady of pain would have the PERFECT breakfast"
You plane shift to Sigil, and either wait for someone to do something to trigger her or you do it yourself
then i see her and she shakes her head
It's not hard to see the lady of pain
one does not simply walk into sigil
Oof, Monkey's Paw, it's the perfect breakfast by your standards, not hers. She flays you.
she doesnt even like people worshipping her.
She wishes not to be percieved
the LoP mews you
Lady of Mogging.
That is literally what Sigil is for. Walking into it, then walking into other places
interacting with the Lady of Pain is not recommended
even other gods avoid directly messing with Sigil
See, the problem is that those two statements lack any logical connector
She's not a god(dess), i think
it's theorized she's like the overgod of Sigil but yeah no one really knows what she is
I am not a logical person
Honestly the way I see it interacting with any Gods is inadvisable purely because they're so far beyond mortal that they just can't perceive morals the same way.
the mystery and sheer power she has makes her one of the most interesting characters in lore, and one of my favorites
That's why my players are currently working to kill one!
only one god ever dared invade Sigil and that was Vecna
crying why cant i use excessive caps i love excessive caps 😭😭😭😭/silly
It is spam. It messes with screen readers
messes with screen readers
Accessibility is important!
Please review the server rules and if you have any questions about them or a moderation you're involved in, go to #moderator-support and ask for a thread to speak witha moderator.
is it bad that I wanna make a tabaxi barbarian npc who is lactose intolerant and has a crippling addiction to soy-milk. Regular milk triggers his rage
I also learned recently that responding solely with an emoji also causes issues for people with screen readers.
But yes, accessibility and usability is why we ask folks not to over-use All-Caps, post single character posts (even of reacts/emojis/stickers), and not over-use formatting.
ohhh okay!! i didnt know that
Khajit?
I hear they have wares, if you have coin.
goes to coffee shop and buys a drink
"is there milk in this?"
"yes"
tears down the coffee shop
what?
Just about every novel where gods appear in the Forgotten Realms make this statement non-canon to that setting
yes. exactly lol
Naturally, if a player fails a roll and tells the GM they succeeded, that's cheating, but what about a player succeeding on a roll and telling the GM they failed?
his name will be Mittens
i saw cat and cheese/dairy and thought of skyrim
How does the player know they failed or succeeded?
I've never done the first, but I've done the second multiple times.
I didn't hit the DC
oh okay lol. Ive never played
the only tabaxi character I've made was khajit-coded in the way that he spoke, and he was a fortune teller (specifically a spirits bard)
Why did you know the DC?
At my table the written lore is a suggestion, only the rules are sacresanct.
is this cheating?
Strange. I've just about always been in games where it was "give me athletics".
the GM sets the DC.
The DM sets the DC (or knows the targets AC) and if the player meets/beats that with their D20 roll (plus modifiers/bonuses), then they succeed/hit.
If not... well then they didn't succeed.
idk if a DM can really... cheat? If the DM says you pass, you pass. right?
As to the question: Yes, lying about your rolls, no matter the reason or purpose, is cheating.
My GMs have always told the player the DC, and then the player rolls and reports success or failure
In the same way, breaking the rules, in any way, is cheating. Even if the DM does it
so I was thinking about watching The Legend Of Vox Machina. Would it be better to watch the campaign or the show first?
i've not seen the dm give the DC ahead of time on checks or saving throws
but i do announce my character's save DC to the DM when doing things because that's just polite
I don't know if this is comparable, but if it's a social encounter and we're having fun, I roll a nat 1 on a check but I have advantage, sometimes I ask the DM to let me take the nat 1 for fun
I can tell you why I'd do this
And this may be unpopular, but cheater DMs are just as bad, maybe worse, than cheater players
"DM please let me take this nat 1 in medicine for fun"
How can a DM cheat though?
I allow my players to willingly fail checks, but only if it makes sense for their characters to do so. For example, one of my players chose to fail insight because he inherently trusted the person he was speaking to. But yes, lying about it is not cool.
Fudging rolls
By breaking the rules in any way.
secretly adding HP to a monster to prevent it from dying
i think that's bad DMIng, but idk if it's... cheating?
DMs can cheat like my computer can cheat when I play BG3
DM's can break the social contract and cause issues at the table
or manifesting an anvil above the player's head and killing them instantly
This is more accurate.
We were rolling to navigate a wet, treacherous staircase, it would have been very funny if somebody fell off, and everybody succeeded on their roll.
hello how are yall
I told the GM I failed
that just sounds detrimental to teh party as a whole
You could've just asked to willingly fail the check
Yes, that is cheating. Being detrimental to the party because "aha very funny" is bad player behaviour
Yeah, DMs are almost like... part of the game engine of a table.
It was fun though
I ask to willingly fail checks in social scenarios
It's ridiculous that the computer fireballed astarion like that when they were behind a pillar, dang cheating
was it for the rest of the party
You could've had that same fun while being honest
thats why we have skeleton man
A lot of DMs have gotten very comfortable with the fact that the players can't see behind the DM screen, and fudging/changing things on the fly. I recommend to any DMs trying a few games without one, if you're lucky enough to play in person!
i'd award inspiration for doing so
I slid down the steps arse first, fell off a cliff, had my fall stopped by a rope, and slammed into the side of the cliff and had to get hauled back up
In VTTs I recommend DMs to never hide rolls, except rolls for actions that the PCs are not aware are taking place.
I personally roll all dice publicly, so my players have no reason to think I'm cheating :]
Hm, sounds like you were just slowing the game down, personally.
I'm just dangling at the end of the rope swearing
I award inspiration for stupid stuff, I once arm wrestled every member of my party and anyone who won got inspiration!
Fudging rolls, whether to the benefit or detriment of the PCs, is a very dangerous habit
It's one thing to fudge rolls, it's another thing to purposefully be a burden to your party.
I save my inspirations and lucky points for saves mostly
metacurrencies fix this
Let's also consider something. Deciding to fail the roll for the stairs is also a roleplay failure.
it's very possible to fudge public dice rolls >_>
I also think that lying to the DM is a bad thing.
The character would not have purposefully fell down the stairs just because it's funny to some imperceptible observer from another dimension, risking limbs and life
they mentioned they fell, then had to get hauled by the other players back up
Do y'all take exhaustion points serious?
Why?
the player above table doing it purposefully is still bad
. see here
Failure is fun though
The dice are the engine of the story, once you disregard them you might as well decide the outcome of any roll yourself.
at this point just ask the dm to fail
People overestimate their ability to tell a better story than the dice.
Yes?
I know. I know it too well. But lying to your DM? lmao.
shite did i ping ya
Do you have a favorite dice set? And if you are getting bad rolls you trade it out for another dice?
Yes, for a dot
i could have sworn i turned it off
What do you mean?
And a single character period too Ti!
oop
Also, was it funny for everyone? Or just the person who lied about the roll?
Do I use them? Yes; the rules are reliant on them
Sometimes the dice are just funnier. Like the time I had an NPC roll a history check to remember the home address of an employee the party needed to speak to, and he failed, good stuff.
ive got some semi cheap red ones with gears in them. I pretend they are my Artificer Dice lol
And if you dont want players to fail, dont have them roll!
I have a dice set for every character
So yes, all in all, lying about your roll to fail, for a cheap laugh, is bad-faith playing that would absolutely infuriate me at my table
Well...
As a player, using this dice set I rolled four natural 1's and didn't land 14+ attack rolls in a row.
As a DM, using this dice set I rolled four natural 20s against my players and killed two of them last session.
The dice taketh and the dice giveth.
This! I have a personal test which is "could the average person do this reliably" and if the answer is yes there's no roll.
I now have 9 player souls (7 because 2 were revivified)
By infuriate me, I mean I would have turned purple, grown claws, all my teeth would have fallen out, new sharper ones would have painfully grown where the old ones stood, my finger bones would have grown sharp, piercing my skin, and my legs would have broken and reoriented in order to allow for a quadrupedal position, after which I would have hunted down the offending player.
Tiefling Bard, Human Sorcerer, Elf Fighter, Elf Wizard, Satyr Bard, Dwarf Cleric, and Goliath Monk
If you think about it, a rap battle is two Bards spamming Vicious Mockery
By this logic 8 mile was the first D&D movie.
Whenever your character has an exhaustion point(s)- do you roleplay with that in mind or only if ur DM remembers? Does that make any sense? Seems like for us .. we get the point about then it's like if we never did... I don't understand why we get them if it never affects our play
i feel the opposite way
i feel like GMs rely too much on the dice to tell a story. feels like the average GM makes players roll for some of the most boring or certain of things
Even if the average person couldn’t do it, an expert wizard can probably remember basic facts about arcana without having to make a check
or have players repeat rolls
This is not actually an opposing view. In fact both can easily be reconcilied and can be seen as two different symptoms of the same disease
oh god....
Roll for Constitution to breathe
Now roll for Dexterity to walk
Now for Strength to open the door
Yep...
amazing
Isnt... what they are fighting? armies?
Those DMs the cr 30 kobold is talking about are exactly the sort of people who "overestimate the ability to tell a better story than the dice". Therefore, they force the die to bend to their way. Others disregard it.
Yeah, for situations like that I don't ask for rolls either.
i once had a session where we just rolled for 2 hours trying to cross a river, when the entire scene could've been resolved in a single roll in just 10 or so minutes
Now act out how you seduce the barkeep please! Forget your persuasion skill.
D&D but it's QWOP
i don't want to be mean to the GM but i ended up just zoning out for most of that session
I made that joke before with the "Potion of QWOP" that forces you to roll for everything
just because the GM really wants players to roll
No, no, four of them died because of goblins
On a small aside I disagree with how a lot of people expect you to act out your charisma checks IRL.
oh yeah, wasnt here for the finale, how was the TPK?
I can be quite awkward sometimes, my 20 charisma bard probably isn't.
they didn't TPK, they managed to escape, albeit with casualties
oh, so you dont have like 9 players per session?
Cleric got sniped, The Monk got crit and insta died
Five players per campaign
Curse of Strahd and Phandelver and Below
i just realized the campaign i signed up for was hoard of the dragon queen
If goblins could play video games in our modern world, would they? Which games would they play?
9 players is far too many.
We love dragons!
They would not
Survival crafting games.
they would play the same games everyone else plays
i salute ya
What happens if you die in game? Is that character finished or can you be resurected for the next session?
break computer
yeah
Depends on the campaign, usually you're permanently dead
Only if someone casts Revivify on you
okey, so those 9 named were the dead ones?
Exhaustion is a real mechanic, it's a debuff you have to remove by resting or by other mostly magical means.
And yes I try to incorporate that in to my RP.
depends in the scenario
Typically I provide some avenue for resurrection but, unless stated otherwise, they're gone for good.
Yeah
Damn... that is a number
one of the campaigns I'm in has something about its setting that resurrection magic (beyond revivify) was impossible
so i lost my cleric for a good long while
i got him back recently, but it temporarily broke things in the world for a brief time
The main reason OG Berserker was absolute garbage (sorry Grog)
I've only been a DM for like 3 months
Fortunate it got changed for the 2024 Edition
I also wasn't counting oneshot deaths
I've only lost 3 PCs in my main campaign. Two left of their own volition to pursue other goals, one got their soul atomised when a God took control of their body.
there's 8 oneshot deaths, 7 campaign deaths
Your players must be pretty experienced making characters by now, haha.
last session ended with them seeing a dragon and going "we are so dead"
I hit my level 6 players with Meteor Swarm
fair, i hope my players dont die too much
😭 😭
There was nearly a TPK in my last session! Twinsies.
Did they instantly explode?
I'm throwing an absolute monster at them next session too!
No,
The Rogue was too far away for the AOE, the Monk and the Warlock went down, the Cleric actually tanked it, not going to 0 hp, and the Druid used their relentless endurance (Orc) to not go down and to heal the others
You see... I like that. Our group seems to disregard them ( even if I don't rest) and it bothers me ... I don't want to say anything to the DM.
I was just wondering if that's a common thing or not.
-# thank u for answering
I've just started playing again. I put a lot of time and effort into my Drow Warlock. I'm invested in him. I would be so bummed if he was knocked off.
My party (level 5, 5 of them) have a CR 11 spellcaster and minions to deal with next session.
If your DM gives you exhaustion levels and it gets ignored that's not a thing that should happen, talk to your DM about it
it's hard enough trying to predict what humans find fun >_>
Oh nice, let me check the CR of the monster I threw at my level 6 players... two CR 12s and one CR 8, along with some minions
i sent 5 CR 13s at my level 9 party last thursday
I don't like killing my player's characters haha. (But I will)
I don't play to kill my players
Is it odd that I am basically broken as a barbarian in a warhammer 40k campaign
Me neither! I'm still very new to trying to balance combat.
But I'm getting there.
I've figured out throwing a lot of encounters with lower CR creatures at them before a boss fight will make the boss fight more tense! Like tenderising meat.
how many PCs?
5
You may just be evil. /j.
and the 5 CR 13s were all in a single fight or over an adventuring day?
I think I'll bring it up... Thank you again hun
its was 4 manshoon simulacrums and manshoon prime
single fight
I think the fun of boss fights is as much the spectacle as the mechanical challenge.
I printed everything out on card stock. Made a binder. Labeled it with my char name. I plan to play him for a long time to come.
Card stock may just be God's gift to arts and crafts.
i love seeing when my players do that
Ok so as a new DM following the DMG. how is it yo manage to keep that balanced? I believe youre a skilled DM so this is deff a genuine question. But according the the DMG ecounter budget... 5 lvl 9s is 13,000 XP. 5 CR 13s is 50,000xp. assuming no Lair was used. Is there anything you do on your end to keep it balanced or are your players just very skilled/experienced. genuine question fr. not trying to accuse of anything if it comes off that way i apologize.
our group plays online and uses google sheets character sheets
i like customizing mine quite a bit
There's nothing like seeing a player get attached to a character in your campaign. Genuinely one of the greatest joys as a DM.
they all have a lot of magic items and summons
and a level 5 sidekick
As someone adding a sidekick to my party in the upcoming session, do you find it's difficult to have an NPC constantly with the party? When it comes to having to play them all the time?
like my Twilight Cleric's sheet is blue & white with stars all over it
Having to reduce a combined HP of almost 1000 is crazy to fight on first thought
Can a Gelatinous Cube be full of itself?
As in smug?
No, I mean literally
it gets easier if a player controls them in combat
gelatinous cubes can eat each other yes
I even printed out spell cards and am buying a spell book to put them in. I'm invested. lol
Ok!! my players do have quite a bit of items but no summons. i do account for the sidekick heal bot they have tho
Smart, he's going to be a knight retainer for a knight in the party so I'll foist that responsibility upon them.
yeah, they have one of each of the elementals
I have even cried 😆
gelatin to the fourth power
summons are fun
in one boss fight my druid's giant spider summoned via Giant Insect kept one of the minion monsters stunlocked in place the whole fight by keeping it from moving at all
I once had a gelatinous cube NPC who kranged himself into a warforged body and he was pretty full of himself... smug, I mean.
good evening everyone
Me too... me too.
im very aware that action economy plays a huge roll and i know lots of tough DMs run double the recommended xp or more. i am just unsure how its balanced since i havent gottent that far yet. I will learn tho!
action economy made my cleric's party have a bad time last session
we had to make it from one side of a maze-like library to another, all while fighting infinite swarms of animated books
Hey I’m new-ish! I’ve played about 10 hours a while ago and have been looking for a group after the one I was with stopped meeting. I would love a group that is open to a new player and meets on weekdays. I joined DnD beyond and I’m just looking for a on line group, no game shops anywhere near me! Also I’m over 21 but not 30. Looking to play as an artificer!
It gets easier to do with time but honestly the best way to do (that I've found) is to test your party a few times early in the campaign to get a feel for what sort of level they operate at then throwing stuff at that level at them.
i actually upgraded the Manshoon Prime to legendary, so tehres a chance he was actually CR 15-17
Even had kids and I cried for them too 😆 they felt so real
I am joining my group mid-campaign. Not sure yet how the DM is going to fit me in.
I killed off one of my darlings last session, I managed to convince the party that I was crying in character as an npc who had witnessed it.
I'm sure they bought it!
geez lol and here i am stressing about using to many deadly encounters in single day
hellooo
after the deck of many things hit the party, balance has never been the same
They need a new name for deadly lowkey, I always see it in the encounter builder and am like "maybe I should lower this slightly?" But I've managed to put that instinct in the corner.
omg. not sure when im gonna introduce the DoMMT but im deff gonna
Oh gosh, I'm sure they did!
I was playing the curse of strahd and one of the hags took my son and cooked him into the pies .... My soul was sobbing
I hate hags now lol oOf DND is awesome lol
ime Deadly buget is like the only way to get people to burn resouces cause anything lower they just use cantrips all the time
but i felt bad cause like maybe they want a chill fight sometimes
yeah, its hard to get into teh mentality of sending a variety when you just wanna get them to burn more faster
Maybe mentally reframing "deadly" as "resource intensive" is a good way to get more confident with balancing.
What feat lets me protect a teammeate that's being attacked
Fighter initiate, protection.
Is one option.
at close rage, Gift of the Metallic Dragon can within 5ft
though its AC bonus is based on proficiency bonus so it's less useful at lower levels
I love shields. So does my AC 20 wizard.
Please don't ask him to make a save he's sensitive about those.
I need a WIS save
From me or the wizard?
both
