I remember seeing an insane statblock for Strahd, like cr 25 or sumn
Damn he is much stronger than I thought
HB ofc but I thought it was funny
Vecna’s hand is currently in Avernus with a Dragonborn Paladin of Tiamat
He's stronger CR wise than VECNA
Actually he is Cr21
Ah, what?
He was in an AL module where the Far Realm gave him a big boost to Cr30 temporarily
Don't tell me he's a normal ass lich statblock and I was tripping
Holy moly
Ah, right
And if you look at the block. It was a regular lich + Far Realm powers
I'm talking about that one Neil Newbon clip.
So yeah Szass Tam is a regular lich
This pisses me off
Wait my Kobold Cleric could open up a shop for mending metal stuff!!
Bro mainly has power he borrows from cooler and stronger guys
In 5.5e he is hiding now because they are coming to collect their fees.
Szass Fruadtam
One is the super lich, Larloch the Shadow King
I like the art for the new Tarroka deck, and love that it comes with a mini guide on using it. That's a must buy for me along with the new DM screen.
(Is there... a term for this? Like mender or smthing?)
Heroes of Faerun saying “ever since the fall of Szass Tam’s rule as he went into hiding Red Wizards have been more neutral aligned” or something like that
Oh, yeah, no, Szass is getting dogwalked
it's uhh... welding
Darn
Welder
Larloch is fun because he is super old (Netherese lich) and he just does side quests
Anyways wanna give your patronage to this totally not suspicious Kobold who is offering to weld stuff?
He once bought a book about the history of Nethril and it disgusted him while reading it so much he hunted down the author to fix the historical mistakes and misinformation
who made the spell that just drains life force of an area again?
I think he was also a nethereese wizard, but technically not a lic h
So now that book has him as a co-author
What are ways you can make your boss aura farm (that doesn't help him at all mechanically)
Larloch actually had a Cantrip like Vampiric Touch in previous editions too
DO NOT call this man a warlock 🔥🔥
cape of billowing
besides Cape of Billowing, that's the easy way out
Fun fact his home is called “Warlock’s Crypt”
Also I'm 100% sure my party would rob him immediately
have them have an orchestra just for themself
It’s north of Baldur’s Gate
Make him immediately alerted to their presence, and have his back turned
"A few minstrels mistakenly called Larloch "the Warlock" or "the Warlock King," after the Warlock's Crypt where he dwelled, but Larloch, apparently, took umbrage at being called a warlock. Composers of ballads naming him as such were supposedly kidnapped by creatures in the night and carried away to be tortured and turned into some undead thing by Larloch. Thus, singing the ballad "The Warlock King" anywhere in three days' ride of the Troll Hills was not advised, lest Larloch overhear and be displeased."
monologue
He is so powerful all the chosen of Mystra attacked him at the same time.
It was a Stalemate
Let him make the party attack him first for free
There is a reason why other Liches work as his servants
Oh yeah, already written it
That's already implemented for a different boss of mine, but nice idea!
New quest
Have the rays of sun make his silhouette dark
Quest Updated: Troll the Warlock King
Aka the sunkissed technique
Hey, I happen to be good friends with the warlock king
This man is a CR 34 in 3rd edition
Yeah he had epic levels
For sure the back turned though, and slow turn around. That's always tough as hell
He’s around Vecna and Acererak level of op Liches
Darn, wish I could implement that, they'll fight inside an underground dungeon unfortunately, perhaps I could make it a torch or a lantern instead
Imagine if Larloch, Vecna and Acererak worked together
Larloch is gaslight
Vecna is Girlboss
Acererak is Gatekeep
I'm getting more motivated to do my horror themed campaign.
I thought Acererak was the Gaslighter!
smh
Depends on the boss. Show their specific area of hyper competence.
Narration can as well
Ooo that's a good one
Why’s that?
Fair, perhaps them sharpening their battleaxe while monologuing to the party while they're chained up
Because he's Acererak
When I got to do my only bbeg intro so far, I narrated how the boss room went silent as all they heard was the sound of heavy footsteps behind them.
I do think what you were saying does give maximum aura points, using class features as a boss is always a +100 to their aura
Have him Behead a minotaur in one sweep of his battleaxe
Acererak is about putting things in the way because he won’t let you in
Larloch is about manipulation
And then the BBEG showed up. Talked to the party. Grabbed something from the boss and left.
Tokii, you are a genius
Vecna gets Girlboss due to process of elimination
Vecna is a girlboss
Oooo that's a good one
Or, alternatively, what CR is he supposed to be?
Reminds me of Ketheric
So this is a tough martial type boss? What is their reputation in world?
Ketheric in BG3 is a good example of a villain introduction if you want sheer aura.
Could have him fell an adult silver dragon
Same with ||Myrkul||
Ngl when I saw him and the music started playing I was like 😦 why is he so cool
Low CR, party hasn't leveled up much yet, but he's still pretty tough
Do they have a safe sanctuary in the caves?
Ohh yeah, two phases, a tactical mind and then reckless fighter when bloodied
Yeah, then killing a Minotaur in one blow would be a pretty aura feat
No, they'd be chained up while the villain is monologuing
And is there a planned way to escape from the chains?
Hi
Was thinking about that, maybe he might, out of arrogance, let them free and enjoy himself as he battles them instead of just executing them outright
How about he takes what looks like is going to be a lethal swing at one of them, only for his precision to mean he slices neatly throug their chains without harming them at all?
Tactical competence.
Ohh yeah, right after cleaving the head off of a monstrosity as well
He let's one of them out, then points his axe and raises an eyebrow challengingly but does not advance, giving them the choice. Attack? Free more allies? Run away?
I would personally save the brute force stuff for the second phase.
And the way I would do it is to have him use his muscles to reshape the entire environment in some way. Cleave a pillar that collapses the ceiling for floor or wall or something.
Oooh I'll definitely adapt something like that
Something showing elegance and skill
dm.vogel is a fake dnd dm trying to scam new players
You could also make him waste an expensive resource in front of the parties eyes
#moderator-support is probably the right place
Be careful and report
Ok thank you
As helpful as you're trying to be, specifically naming and shaming people is against server rules.
Have him willingly fail saving throws (hurts him mechanically, or if he’s immune to the conditions it imposes, it has no effect)
Sorry I didn’t know
Or use legendary resistances without rolling the save first
but wouldn’t it be worst for a person scamming those who r trying to learn worst than me warning people?
"Go ahead. If you have the will to live, strike first and strike true."
Raphael in that one cutscene in BG3
I'd probably have to rewrite the monologue then
UPDATE LOG: rahhhh I found all the voice actors I needed ty facebook
Happy for ya!
How many campaigns are you running now?
2
Thinking I might get my horror anthology I wrote last year and fleshing out the land its in. Then use the places and parts of the anthology for quests.
VAs for what?
Sounds amazing!
short campaign I'm making!
I plan to make this my biggest project yet
and u need VAs for that?
probably for NPCs
danganronpa style ^^ trials are fully voice acted
++ visual novel style
I might send samples here because I'm so excited
the first session will be on wed, but it's a false trap kind of session
where I lure them into thinking it's a romance sim, but in reality is a murder mystery killing game
smth like that
I DID send a sample of a UI I did
Might have to tell them about that
hm?
it's not good to be like "aha, I gotcha", by giving them an entire different thing than what they joined for
Oh I told them all the genres already dw
Okay great
Yeah I'm taking the night off my one campaign tonight for reasons and might get started on it try and deal with said reasons.
Hope you have fun
IRL house maintenance BS has me in a circle
That do how it be sometimes
I wish Mending cantrip existed IRL
Unfortunately gotta make Intelligence checks with Tinkers Tools, then Strength checks with Shovels.
Can I ask y'all a question? I wanted some input on how to make recommendations without coming across condescending. I've noticed the Rogue in our party doesn't ever use her Cunning Strikes feature (5.5), and I don't know if she's aware she has them. I wanna tell her, in case it would help, but i don't wanna hurt her in case it's unwelcome
Well they're situational abilities to begin with.
Personally I've rarely used mine in my Tuesday game.
Now part of that is cause two of my options aren't viable in that game, but also I find that more damage can be more useful 9/10
That's fair. We've just been playing for a couple of years, i get the impression she might not be aware
She might not be. Could just ask her why she's not using them, say you're curious or something. She might be aware and is just choosing the damage.
Fortunately Cunning Strikes are kinda just nice extra tools rather than a core thing to use well.
I forget about them sometimes as well
I've only played 2014 rogue so i confess i don't know them very well in practice
They're just potentially helpful extra abilities that cost sneak attack dice
Like knocking someone prone ahead of some melee martials in your party
hell hell
Withdraw let's you disengage for free.
Oh i know what they are, ive read the descriptions
but i havent had to consider them in a real combat
doom dectected and caught
Withdraw seems a bit overkill along cunning action, but the other two seem strong to me. Poisoned and prone are both good conditions
a lot of enemies are immune to poisoned but still
A lot more aren't.
Like 380 something aren't in the 5.5e MM at least.
It's just most DMs only really use the enemies that are
And some modules also use them 90% of the time.
what a thrill
Like the one I'm in, Eve of Ruin.
Which is why I don't use the poison or terrify option I get from my subclass
Then I have the mobile feat so I just take the OA attacks sometimes and dont use Withdraw. My party consists of a few ranged attackers so I don't use trip.
That's fair. In combat i try to focus most on my own abilities (that i definitely dont use optimally either) and my group tries to avoid backseat gaming
The higher level 3 cunning strikes I should try and use more.
Only problem with them is two of them are Con saves.
Does your party strategize with each other at all?
I mean yeah a bit. WOuldn't say a gigantic amount, but some
We have a main healer and I'm the secondary healer, and we often discuss who's on yo-yo duty today 😅
You know whats better than a healer? someone who kills the enemies
Oh? So new Ravenloft book pre-orders are up, and it's 7 subclasses? Nice
So strategizing like "Can anyone knock this one prone so our melee can really wail on them?" might be a way to see if they'd use their Cunnin Strikes, but otherwise I would say let them play their own character.
We do talk about stuff like that yeah
More allies not downed=higher action economy though
Is it likely that reanimator subclass features will be 100% identical to unearthed arcana from last year?
well yes but how can they be downed if every enemy in the room is dead
you know what, don't answer that im sure they will find a way
I'm playing a paladin but i'm ngl if i can choose between a divine smite or healing wording an ally to get them up and doing stuff again with my bonus action, that word do be healing
I don't do much healing of people who arent down
I wish more DM's used the rules to prevent Whack-a-Mole
We'll have to wait and see. It's been almost a year
Also, that UA had 8 subclasses, so someone didn't make the cut, I guess?
Do we know which 7?
We just know Reanimator and Hollow Warden.
I'm glad reanimator made it
I'd guess that either Hexblade or Undead didn't get in, because then Warlock would be getting 2 subclasses in this release, vs the rest getting 1
isn't reanimator just a fancy pancy necrodancer
You get a goon
BOB DO SOMETHING
I like that it makes Spare the Dying a spark of life
Hexblade got moved to the Arcana book later this year.
that book better have all 4 of the missing wizard schools
So, yea. that's it
It does
So it should be
Bard: College of Spirits
Cleric: Grave Domain
Rogue: Phantom
Sorceror: Shadow
Warlock: Undead
Artificer: Reanimator
Ranger: Hollow Warden
Im more curious what species are they putting in, im guessing Reborn and Hexblood but Dhympir was already reprintet so surely they won't double up that fast
Dhampir is in it.
They've also got a Werewolf now
And Lupin
Those are all so peak I'm looking forword to it
My guess they wanted to put Dhampir into a physical printing and it fits ravenloft.
Everything except Hexblade.
My favorite is probably Grave Cleric. Was already good in 2014, I wonder what theyll improve in the final version
(Get it shocking)
Which was moved.
I think Grave is getting nerfed
didn't they just reprint it, come on
My main warlock finally gets her subclass updated. Yay
Was undead or undying bad
Reprinted in a digital only product
Undying
Undying was the boring one
It was so bad they made Undead Warlock rather than remaking Undying.
undying is terrible yeah
Dhampir is in Ravenloft I assume so people who don't buy DDB only products can get Dhampir.
And it's the only book they fit in.
La-Carte buying died for this you know
What about book of hungers?
It's a ddb only product
didnt they do something weird with dhampir where Con still dictates damage of their special unarmed, but it no longer helps the to-hit? or am i misinformed
Mainly made as a pre-order bonus.
I think the only change is they removed the not needing to breathe and replaced it with Necrotic resistance.
2 months till new dnd content
Not entirely true
They also lost the ability to get a fly/swim speed if you had those
Well they were made a full species rather a lineage.
Which I assume Hexblood and Reborn will be the same case.
Probably
Cause flying Dhampirs was probably an issue they didn't realize lol
Flying hexblood!
But Dhampir I'm assuming is in it so a physical version of it exists.
And there's no other book it'd fit into.
Also if you're buying the new Ravenloft you probably want all the ravenloft species in it.
I just wanna see the Lupin kit.
And imo there's not much more species they could do ravenloft wise other than Lupin.
Reborn and Hexblood cover a lot of potential flavors.
Lemme see werewolf skills 😄
An eldritch horror species is probably the only remaining thing they could do.
I don't see a problem, those usually fly
My dog girl will become reality
I'm mostly looking forward to the Dark Sun books.
Tho I'm excited to see that the Dark Lords are getting actual statblocks
And we're getting a one shot for each of the 17 Dark Lords assumably
What delightful agony we shall inflict.
Exactly
DM did let me play a Merfolk in the campaign under one single condition
I have to sing a song every 5th session
I'll be pre-ordering ravenloft next month probably
Same here
Did they actually announce Dark Sun Books?
My warlock wants her subclass back now pls 😄
so... why are all your undead summons chewed up
August
censored
They're gonna announce them at Gencon.
She don't bite them. They're friend 😄
It would be funny if dark sun didn’t get announced at all
It's an unconfirmed confirmation really
“All theories are wrong goodbye” dnd beyond
Watch it be the Mystara Revival we have all been waiting for.
It's said that the champions book will be a world where magic destroyed it. Where evil beings called bleed kings rule as tyrants.
That it's name can be derived from the opposite of this title.
Light Moon
But yeah there's no way it's not gonna be dark sun imo.
"DARK SUN: Return of Mecha Strahd 2"
The obviously Dark Sun UA.
Psion
Dark Sun getting its IP renewed after well reception of the UA.
It's the cross over for Dark Souls obviously/s
The UA being dropped pretty quickly after the dudes keeping it from being made were completely gone.
Kill dark sun
To be honest every book is better with mecha in it, look at the Eberron
I'm guessing it'll be a Box set to nostalgia reach.
With Champions of Athas being the running name.
Like an actual box set or a dual book thing like FR
Actual box. It'd be the smartest play imo.
We haven't gotten an Actual non Starter set Boxed Set in decades
First Dark Sun was a box set. It's return after being kept at bay by Perk, Craw and that other dude. After so many years.
Make it a box set to gain the nostalgia reach
I don't know if theyd go that far. They didn't with FR or Spelljammer or Planescape which all started as Boxed sets.
Now, if it's something like the 5e Planescape slip case that'd be nice.
Yeah something like that probably
But in this day and age 92 pages of lore and setting info just ain't enough for a large setting set for the price they are.
It's gonna happen tho. I would almost bet money its gonna happen.
The new FR books should be the new minimum for setting quality.
Cause NuWotC is really trying to improve the company image and undo all the damage the Cordell (4e) and the 5e era have done.
How can I msg in looking for DM? I need to ask for a co-dm for a one piece homebrew
You can see it with the noticeable quality improvement and them trying to restore old partnerships and ties.
As well as the inclusion of 4e aspects into 5.5e
Tbh more so than anything I would like more info on Organized play. When WotC stopped writing AL and opened up adventures to the DMsGUILD it became a mess to keep track of.
I do welcome this new approach they're having which is "dnd settings exist to be used." Unlike the last 10 years where it was "settings only exist to sell modules nothing more even the setting we keep forcing you into won't get a guide from us."
A Discord category in the main hobby server just isn't a good place to centralize information.
Mainly because discord is not web indexable. So if you aren't a member of this discord server finding AL information is just straight up a pita
I don't know anything about AL but it sounds like that'd be good
I would not be surprised if an AL category appeared on DDB as a place to get adventures. Instead of the current method. Wading through 10,000+ dungeon craft content on DMsGUILD or hoping the store you are running for hooks you up.
Being invited to a campaign to then get basically told, im not allowed to meet or know who I'm playing with until the first session might have been the largest red flag Ive ever seen
Run for your life
Trust me, i was outta there
Sonic never seen a fool run that fast fr /silly
I can see it happening.
The shop I run at is so excited to see the new support that's rolling down
Hey everyone I’m new to dnd I created my first character he’s a paladin
Hell yeah
Paladins are bomb
Tonight I'm playing dnd, from the balcony of my ocean side hotel room in Mexico 😎
As a player no less!
What character are you playing?
Hey everyone I just got into dnd and I’m looker for a starter kit to buy so me and a couple of my buddies can play any recommendations we are all new
I find that when a forever DM finally gets to play they always make an insanely good character
I have a reborn Paladin named Ein who got dug up in a mine and just escaped with the party in a sort of work camp/prison break
Woah!
I’m about to paint my figure now
Reborns are awesome
Question
I'm in a party with a reborn kobold and I DM a party that has a Reborn Grave Cleric
If I use fireball underwater and have elemental adept would that creature still have resistance or what
I tried dming a while back my friends didn’t take it serious they aren’t as nerdy as I am
Wouldn't the fireball immediately dissipate? I mean, if it doesn't, you're still making the water insanely hot so... probably full damage?
Not all friends make good D&D friends
You'd bypass the resistance
Bypass
I mean, you just answered your own question, it's magic
Truly they don’t and it was a pretty fun one I think I even made two twin elves who were pretty much stoners but they were interesting characters and important to the story
Lie is a strong word.
Eh, I find that "bit" characters or characters created as a joke get old fast
I mean, it might be funny for one or two sessions but for a whole campaign?
I told them multiple times that the resistance wouldn’t apply
I find them fine, because we allways find ourselves on the journy, or their recklessness gets them killed. Win win
If they were the DM and that was their ruling at the time I wouldn't blame them tbh
And even they're wrong about it, it's still their decision to make?
Like, you realize they're in charge of what does, and doesn't work, yeah?
Yeah, fair point
Yes they didn’t live the whole time tho. Think merry and pippin from lord of the rings but as elves they start out kind of annoying but they eventually became responsible and they sacrificed themselves
Yeah but they were saying that the resistance from them being a tielfing and being underwater would stack overriding my elemental
Which makes absolutely no sense
Why I’m I still in this game
Resistance doesn't stack
I kept saying that
Hey everyone I’m new to dnd and was looking at getting a starter set for me and my buddies who are all new any recommendations please

Oh my god, the emoji is a cat and not a bat?
I'm looking at it from a phone's perspective and I never knew
WAIT WHAT LOL
I thought it was a bat lmao
Howdee
That's a tail???
HII!!
Welcome to the O
: ) How art thou
I’m good, you? ; D
This is the same DM that said I had to roll a flat DC 19 “check” or my spells would just go away
Alive, I s'ppose
90% chance your spell just is gone?
LMAO
How canonical is light domain cleric of Selune? Wiki doesn't list light domain on her page, but it thematically fits very well. Or does it
Pretty much
Uhh this is probably a question to be asked in #dnd-lore
Thats a bunch of red flags, Tasha
I should run my horror game early in the day so I can put a lot of vocal energy into it.
Heyo chat
What? All the time?
That's a bad ruling
HII!!
Hey,, Wassup?
Nothing much, you?
I don't know where to put this, but did the server pfp just change?
Yes lmao
Wasn’t it red?
ya, that's what I thought
I'm also getting bored 😭
👀
I like the art in ur pfp btw : )
Anyway, arcane archer fighter way of the elements monk is quite a silly build
Bros peeking at us lmao
I drew her I don't know her actual name but she is vertual star of Japan
It’s amazing!!
Whenever I casted the spell
How did it go
Somehow my 5th level spell just ended “just cause”
Yeah Japanese names are insane to remember. I can't even pronounce 😁
I hope the ravenloft subclass stuff got changes from the ua. A lot of it needed touches here and there.
Idk
It's all in your mind
ah okay, I thought I was going crazy anyways, lol !!
Stuff like this is why I keep my games as close to RAW as I can, I really try not to need to make rulings on the fly.
I think the gaslighting worked a little too well...
No, it did change lol
I was just messin' with ya
nah you're good, dw !
@tribal night questions about moderation go to #moderator-support . It is considered off topic to discuss moderation in any other channel.
Ah alr
Good one lmao
I cannot be trusted
I am THE April Fool.
is there a link to the all the ravenloft stuff? or stuff going over it
Remind me to not get on ur bad side lol
I should have a part in the Trickery domain
It's more imersive. Theirs a reason spellcasters in DBZ charge up their moves awhile
I don't think it's more immersive lol
I think for casters, doing magic should be as simple as breathing air
Ok, spellcasters are borderline useless now, thanks
"You take 3 rounds to cast fireball."
so they didn't outpace the manga
You waste a spell slot, to maybe have it go through, then they make a save, which makes it even less likely to do anything
Just not fun
Cut the dps in thirds while still being susceptible to damage.
See, Taz gets it
I feel you!
could make it more immersive if casters had to keep their spellslots inside of a bag mixed with broken glass
i don't know that it would make it more fun tho
My casters don't even get modifiers to attack rolls. Bonuses are the same as Aim Assist in shooters. I don't want them! /j
Your casters use attack rolls?
Your casters deal damage?
Why’d the change the dnd thing
Which one?
Idk
Where like the humans be humans
Oooh spooky season
Have you guys ever used your real life experiences with grief to make a backstory for a character who has lost people and is dealing with grief? Or do you think the two things should stay separate?
Oh yeah man, because being an adventurer for years means you gotta take 3 rounds to cast Firebolt
Something that's fun for me as a player is when overarching nerfs are slapped onto my class that prevent me from being able to play it how I want to and would normally be able to
What?
Some days the best way to move on, is from another perspective
Years?
Wow, thats impresive
Matter of fact, you only regain spell slots per year
Man the Ravenloft alt cover looks so damn good
I dont regain spell slots
That'll finally close the gap
Wizards can still true polyfrog. smh
Cube each roung per spell level. Cantrips take away turns
I should make a pugilist some day
And when you take the magic action, your movement, bonus action, and reaction are used up
Also every time you cast a spell you roll a d100, on a 1 you just explode
That moment when you're a DM who feels casters are too OP but you don't know how to run the game in a way that mitigates this so you need to slam overwhelming nerfs on them so people just don't play them in your games
That’s wild
Casters are fine, Martials are fine
I kinda feel like OSE has the better method where you have to declare you're casting at the beginning of a second round and your spell only goes off at the end of the round after everyone else goes meaning melee characters have had their chance to fizzle your concentration.
I have a question for y'all. I had to relocate recently to a smaller rural area. I had a much easier time finding people interested in DND within the big city, but am having a harder time doing so now.
Have there been any strategies y'all have used to get people interested in-person?
I've been looking for players in-person, so I can run a game, for the past 2 months.
I mean I understand how you can have an issue with balancing it cause it relies on sponging up casters resources and some tables tend to not to want too many encounters per day
I once played a gnome wild sourc who had to roll on the d10000 table any time he cast a spell, each spell was randomized, and each of his stats was rolled with a D20
Against all odds my best success is facebook groups. Because rural communities definitely still use Facebook for 90% of their social media and as such, tends to be the best result for DND.
There's so many better ways to balance around casters than just "more encounters per day"
And certainly better than arbitrary massive nerfs
why is the new profile picture grey?
I'm not saying they're good, or the best option, I'm just saying I understand where the initial train of thought comes from
are pugilist as broken as people say?
idk, I noticed that earlier, it changed super recently (like I think 10 minutes ago or something iirc)
You don't need to throw more encounters at your party. You need to diversify your encounters. Throw in some enemies that can get around the map faster. Say you want an undead horde? Boom throw in a wendigo. Give your monsters random abilities or magic items. Make it so when a spellcaster makes a good play the monsters target them as they become the biggest threat and try to force the party into a defensive position.
Thank you for the tip. The area is less densely-populated.
It's harder to find a social hub. While I'm getting more comfortable asking around the Local Game Store, it's been a process.
Four years changes a lot in a home county.
yeah idk when, but deffo today
Gotta wait 5 more days for D&D now awh man
problem with that is, that it can feel very "targeted", so dont overdo it
The initial train of thought for spells taking a number of rounds equal to the spell's level to cast? Wild.
I thought it was recent because I say like something change on the left hand side of my screen, and when I looked, the pfp was black
I play one
I can feel it's strength, but it doesn't feel broken.
A lot of Recharge abilities and some punish you for using them again before it
I.e, Dig Deep giving you exhaustion levels after the first use
Haymaker is only strong if you can land your hits consistently
Yeah I feel ya. I went about 4 years no DND and I got so desperate I began googling and sure enough, facebook had a dnd group for my state and my area.
Otherwise you're losing Moxie
What is the best way to regenerate wizard spell slots
No, I understand where the train of thought comes from to nerf spellcasters. I never said that this was any good way.
Sleep
long rest?
A long rest
or have your dm give you an item that works like a long rest
They have a once per short rest ability that can do a few
You can use an Orb of Power for one, a ring of spell-refueling also does one.
Let's see...
A Ring of Spell Storing doesn't really recharge anything, but if you put a few first levels or up to 5th level on one, you get a free cast (given you expend Spell Slots to put them in there then cast them laster)
I'm lucky to have online spaces as a tool to get a game going.
However, I'm somebody who craves in-person social experiences.
If I don't have that, I know I'll go insane. :/
Gonna be hard to play D&D without that
Ask me that 3 years ago, agreed. Now, nope
Why is the server evil
What?
Dark icon
New book is on preorder
Daddy strahd is in charge of fashion
I see
I'm trying to find out if any of the game shops near me get alt covers
Which book?
Cause I want the alt for ravenlot
Ravenloft
Ravenloft Horrors within
Oooooh noted.
I feel like if I was joining a game and the DM said they were implementing nerfs to spellcasting as a whole I would probably dip out of that game
Can your simulacrum use their arcane revcory on you
That's a red flag for me
The early 2020s completely redefined my opinion of social experiences. o-o
He does have an insane fit
I would do anything for an IRL game.
Would you go out and try to meet people who are interested in D&D IRL
Ayo new server icon
Spooky
Unfortunately no. That is a destiny for someone else other than I.
Very early halloween yall
Mainly cause I don't have reliable transportation rn
So it'd have to be hosted at my place
Haha that was my first dnd game EVER. My DM turned my sorcerer from spell slots and cantrips into point buy. I.e. you get 5 points per day per level and I was level 2 which meant either 1 level 1 spell or 2 cantrips because cantrips were 5 points, level 1 spells were 10 cantrips, 2 level 2 were 15 points, and so on and so forth.
And my place ain't suitable to host a dnd game. Especially atm.
Yes this was 5th edition too.
Well then, I guess I have an additional project to try and find players. Thanks for the help everyone.
My first dm nerfed my bard by giving almost half of the total enemies we fought advantage on saving throws against my spells
Without saying beforehand
Another cruel harsh reality is no one plays dnd around here except my family.
Thats kinda mean ngl.
Like...Why your spells specifically?
like just bard spells? lol what
But if it was just you in particular then yeah very bad.
Online TTRPGs are gonna be my fallback, if I truly cannot find anybody during the summer.
I'm lucky enough that my Faerûn players wanted to move online, since I had to relocate.
I just want some real in person interactions.
Have you tried wishing upon a star?
The LGS plays a lot of TCGs, but... I don't want that. :<
I don't want to play TCGs as my primary social experience.
This is definitely leaning into vent territory, so I'll stop there.
Honestly I got lucky with my group. I met them online for DND, but we've since expanded. We've tried Nimble, pathfinder, even a new superhero system called Paragons & Prowlers. Ita become my favorite group. And then my other group we started 5e and then went OSE which I hated at first and then after giving it another try really came to enjoy a lot more.
I'm so bothered by the way the story of the campaign I'm playing in is going, it's gone from something I'm really interested in and invested in to something I am struggling to force myself to be interested in.
Speak with your DM. Also look into if the issue is the story itself or just how you and your character tie into it.
A comparable situation would be imagine if the plot necessitated you save a specific NPC, but then this NPC is the dumbest, most unlikeable, backstabbing person ever and you're expected to have your character care about saving them despite this for the simple sake of saving them
I was invested in saving them at first, but I've just hammered continuously with non stop reasons for my character to stop caring if they get saved or not
I have indeed tried wishing upon a star
Best I can do is start a 3rd online game during the day so I can bring my 100%
I'm gonna keep asking in-person at the LGS.
I'll start adding Facebook to my search. :x
Finally... I'll wish upon a star. o-o
Like I am bending over backwards to try and find a reason for my character to care about saving these people and I just can't beyond the vacuous concept of "saving people good"
Yikes. Is it just kinda bad writing or are you being railroades that way? Because I love my OSE DM because if we decide as a party we don't wanna be involved with something, we're free to drop it. Sometimes at our own risk, but still.
Once my home situation is fixed up, I'll swallow my fears and ask on FB.
That sounds terrible. Escort quests are questionable already but to have it take up your entire TTRPG experience towards an unlikeable NPC sounds agonizing. It would be different if a PC was the escort, and had incentive to change.
As someone who gets kinda terrified of joining rando groups, FB isn't that bad. The bad groups end up disbanding by firat session anyways.
Nope. Arcane Recovery would only work on it
And once because simulacrums don't regain features after using them all up
We're in this city and are being set up to want to save this entire city, but the entire city has been terrible the entire time.
They discriminate against anybody who is not the predominant species of the city.
They discriminate heavily against magic users to the point they're prosecuted.
They have police automatons that will swoop down in response to us doing damn near anything and fight us, they fought us because we tried to stop a robbery.
We've been treated pretty poorly by most of the NPCs so far.
We've been scammed/robbed twice.
The leadership of the city is corrupt and was too dumb to realize the BBEG enacting his plan right under their noses, and are not willing to do very much to stop it now either.
And now we're expected to go around trying to earn favor from people in this city that has been treating us terrible the whole time and I'm just wondering why my character would give a damn about this point about saving this city from the BBEG which the city is enabling and propping up and cuddling up to.
Can a simulacrum make a simulacrum using wish
Screw it. I should just get my session 0 of my horror game scheduled and thatll get me kicked into gear.
I don't believe they can anymore in 2024 rules.
It wasn't an unlikeable NPC we're saving, it's an entire unlikeable city, and the sole thing that is supposed to keep me bought in on saving this city is "Aw come on not everybody there is bad".
But we're not being shown that
A simulacrum can't cast Simulacrum and since Wish is casting Simulacrum no.
Doesn’t wish do anything just with a 33percent chance of never using it again
Your best bet, is to just conserve spell slots and use them as needed rather than trying to find an infinite spell slot exploit
It's more effort than it's worth
It wouldn’t be casting simulacrum it would be making a simulacrum which is usually the end product of the wish spell
You'd be using Wish to cast Simulacrum without the material components.
" If you cast this spell again, any simulacrum you created with this spell is instantly destroyed."
Oh ok
" If you cast this spell again, any simulacrum you created with this spell is instantly destroyed."
When Wish "replicates a spell" its just casting that spell as an action for free
At this point I would bring it up to the group. Some people may wanna play it out just for the rewards or XP. Decide what you want to do as a party. And keep in mind, its okay for your PC to be like "okay these guys are jerks. I'm going to stick with the party but I won't go above and beyond." And use your morals in game as justification. As long as you arent causing problems with other players you can voice how you feel and if things get bad, be the voice to sway your party out of an even worse situation.
So it still follows the rules of the spell used.
That's... good lord. RN my players were arrested for disturbing the peace, but this is in the city of Yartar who treated them as any normal passerby before danger struck.
Difference is, this is just one city the players have been in for 2-3 sessions, when they have already developed positive rapport with other settlements.
To have an entire campaign where people are just durdling around and being purposefully antagonistic doesn't sound like intrigue. It sounds like torture.
The way to get around this is just to transcribe the spell onto a scroll and this isn’t technically classed as casting it in that way
Where's the chaotic good and chaotic neutral folks trying to reform that corrupt city system? To act as the party's olive branch? :/
Can barbarian only be chaotic ?
They may not want too tbh. Some might just be in it for the XP/Reward and not give 2 flying seagulls otherwise tbh.
Nope they can be any. Lawful good, lawful evil, lawful neutral, etc.
I'm thinking I just need to make a different character who is willing to save horrible people for the sake of saving people
When I've never needed to forcibly bend my character to fit the plot before because the plot was reasonable and believable
I mean would like if they are good or neutral atleast, bc if they follows the rules I would be glad atleast, not all of them
I personally disagree unless you're being extremely hard railroaded.
Why the new server icon?
New release upcoming
New sourcebook?
For this: #dnd-announcements message
I would guess that would be classified as a setting book
You can make them that. Make it so your barbarians rage is the righteous fury against injustice. Or someone just made you angry. However you'd like to write it.
Interesting. New subclasses.
More Ravenloft stuff, that's cool
Im just so annoyed because the game was literally perfect until we got to this stupid crappy city and are being made to feel like we need to save it despite it being so terrible
We've been going almost a year at this point
I expressed my issues to the DM and table and got told "I dunno what to tell you not every city is good"
Then not every character is going to be jumping to save that city
Did the server icon just change?
yeah, new edition comming
not wrong, but understood the thing
Of dnd? Its been less than two years.
More like new book.
Not a new edition - new book release upcoming
Oh nice. Whats the new book about?
Strahd got mad aura in the banner
Here.
I don't understand what you mean here
Tbf it could be the DM is writing you guys an opportunity/ultimatum. This is your chance to save the town, change the leadership for the better, and set it up as maybe a kind of home base if your party WANTS to spend the time to do such a thing. Especially in 5.5e with Bastions.
This city is several miles out in the desert away from everything it took us like two sessions to get here so I don't think it's the bastion thing
he isnt wrong about not every city is good and should be saved
but i understand the frustration of dont being able to save it at all
Hell even when I just tried to stop a robbery in progress the law enforcement automatons pinged me as being violent and tried to kill me, but completely ignored the robbers
So even when I am trying to do good things and save people in this city I'm already getting punished for it
So congrats DM, next time I see someone getting robbed or attacked, they're just gonna get robbed or attacked
Let them BURN
I'm just not gonna do anything
Based on the "Not every town is good" quote from your DM, I'm assuming that saving this town despite its flaws is the goal but it may not be a forced one. Keep in mind, you can play a the skeptical adventurer of the party who questions the value of doing a said quest. As long as you don't aggravate the party you're free to play the character you want.
Talk to the towns Artificer
Be like "Eyo, what the hell? Your robots attacked me for trying to aid them in stopping a robbery."
The robots never tried to stop the robbery
They only tried to stop me from stopping it
Damn
So I'm left here thinking
Kill them CLANKERS
My character would just leave she'd just dip
She would be like "Screw this city I'm outta here I'm better off going back to exploring the wilderness"
Especially since the people who are believed to be hunting me down due to my backstory have been shown to be in this city
So why would my character stay at this point
Aside from "Well the party is here" and "Come on surely not everybody here is terrible"
I think for my third game I'm gonna try and overcome my 5 player limit
My warforged giving you the stink eye
I have a Warforged too lol
4 is nice, 6 can be a lot and is hard to manage
Yeah last time I tried was when I first tried to dm
I want to do something like C4SH from BL4
Do a pistol wielding war forged with a tendency to gamble
new server logo?
Both of the Warforged characters I've played use their fists lol
Neither of which were a Monk
(Armorer Artificer and Pugilist)
I would go with Warforged Wild Magic Sorcerer with Firearm proficiency
Or maybe artillerist artificer
a part of me want to make a warforged figther
Becausea machine with an armor and big weapons is funny
You see.
I would've played a Warforged Monk
But my dm got the Pugilist book because he heard how excited I was to play it one day lol
heard some stuff about pugilist, is... interesting
Pugilist is pretty decent
i dont know it yet at all to say any solid opinion about it
I hadn't realised until recently that Spare the Dying got range added to it
that scales!
in concept i heard is "a monk but with STR instead of dext"
Yeah, it's actually worth considering now
2014 Grave Cleric with 2024 Spare the Dying gets its range cranked crazy style
Massive range on Spare the Dying
Why is it so hard to find a DM nowadays?
Because there will always be more players than DMs
Because there are more players
Alas, Grave Cleric is getting a 2024 reprint so they might not have the increases anymore
Unless WOTC is based
They don't and I really don't like the flavor direction of the reprinted version
Ah well my grou basically cycled through 2 DMs and cant even get a session 1 going
My group left me before session 1.
"Ah yes this subclass is described as a destroyer of undead; let's give it a bunch of necrotic damage!"
I hope they fixed it lol
What happened?
Surely the subclass that is a destroyer of undead would be chock full of a damage type that is useless against a lot of Undead
Nothin important
I always considered it an interesting spell tbf, but the touch aspect did always make me double think it
Yeah, atp if you're in touching distance just cast Cure Wounds lol
Are there any dms here who want to teach me? 👀
I'm wanting to learn how to dm (im very new as a player. I know the basics).
I get alot of campaign ideas. And I want to be able to teach and play with my family as they're interested in learning the game
Sure
Ooo fun. I can’t personally, but you might find more luck in #dm-discussion
If you had to combine every class into one superclass, what would you call it
MAD Trouble
Ohhh okie
and being stable mean? you dont need to do death doors saves?
a creature is Stable if it has 0 HP, but doesn't need to make Death Saving Throws.
then what it mean?
so...it just....im confused im not getting what it does....
If you're stable you'll wake up in a few hours without needing to be magically healed.
okey, that help a bit
So its getting to 0hp and being open to be healed to pick yourself up but not death doors
can use things like second wind while 0hp?
You're unconscious and need someone else to heal you. You don't really get to do anything, you're just sort of there, waiting patiently for someone to fix you.
new server icon whodis
New book coming out soon...
spooky
Heck yes
You just need to have crossbow master
Sounds like a funny ranger/arcane archer build
It works with any ranged bow build
-# does that imply the existence of a melee bow build?
I think ranger would be the best since it will probably be the equivalent to blasting a shotgun in someone's face
When I did it I did it with fighter
Fighter might make it feel like a super soldier with barrages of bolts
Pew pew
arrows are tight
I have a barbarian occasionally using a magic bow as an improvised weapon to trigger the "when you attack with this weapon, you can spend a charge to attempt to restrain the enemy"
Hear me out...
If a monster has four arms, would holding 4 swords be cool or 4 hand crossbows?
Heeey everyone. Quick question. According to the original rules.
Let's say I'm a paladin nulticlassing with a magic caster such as wizard or cleric or something like that; can I use spell slots from one class to cast the spells from the other? Or is there no separation per say.
For example I have 2 spell slots in Paladin and my cleric class I have 5. If I run out of the two, can I use the 5 to cast the paladin spells. Even further, their ability to expend spell slots to deal damage, can that be applied too?
Version: 5.5e 2024
gotta go with a 4 sword wielder
General grievous
Would dual wield master apply or would you need two dual wield master feats?
theres a whole table of what spell slots you'll have from mulitcasting
You use the Multiclassing spellcasting table
Ty
So if you had 5 levels of Paladin you are a level 3 Spellcaster
Take 2 levels of cleric for 5paladin/2cleric you are a level 5 spellcaster
I always go warlock paired with sorcerer
If I want the highest amount of spell slots
I love these rules ngl
pure warlock is my favourite flavour of warlock.
True, one short rest and boom you can spam level 7 spells again
Yeah I love monoclassing way more than Multiclassing
No
Warlocks Pact slots max at 5th level
Oh mb
Technically warlock/sorcerer is at most levels probably less spell slots mathematically than you’d have monoclassing sorcerer
Ah true
In terms of sheer quantity of spell slots
But also emergency level 5 slots are handy
Which sorcerer also has
I keep forgetting 😭
Sorcerer actually has more “emergency” slots because they have so many and can make so many
Because I never end up using all my spell slots before long rests
Thank you very much everyone.
I'm trying to build a character who fits the following:
Stays range to deal damage
Goes in for a decisive kill
Stays in melee longer to ensure the kill is accomplish. Or is able to get out of danger due with spells such as misty step.
Want a somewhat strength build.
Can summon, control or manipulate minions later on .
So for this I'm thinking a fighting/paladin class with eventually necromancer wizard. Considering adding rogue or making rogue the fighter class.
You could probably just do that with an Eldritch Knight fighter
The boss watching me convert all my level 1 and 2 spell slots to level 7 before entering the fight:
Since Eldritch Knight can use animate dead and other summoning spells
You can only create spell slots of up to 5th level using sorcery points as a sorcerer
RHH HI XOEJGK
This ^
It’s very fair
Since sorcerer is just a stronger wizard
In my perspective wizards gets alot of spellf
And better subclasses imo
Yeah
Even spells only wizards can use
Fighter subclass?
Someone also mentioned the sorcerer being able to convert spell slots. I love that so I'm considering sorcer
Wizard has more variety so it's handy
Ahh ok
Yeah Eldritch Knight is a fighter subclass with Wizard spellcasting (by like a third)
Bladesinger maybe?
The main thing you need to worry about is different spellcasting stats and Multiclass requirements
Paladin cannot Multiclass (or Multiclass into) if you don’t have a 13 in both Strength and Charisma for example
Sorcerer isn’t amazing for melee. Multiclassing could be alright but I wouldn’t really recommend it for a number of reasons
Important question, fighter vs ranger?
Rogue requires 13 Dexterity Wizard needs 13 Intelligence, etc
Go on......
in general? Fighter fo sure
Already someone falling for trolling bait
Yhh I was also trying to balance the amount of stats I'd need
Githyanki fighter: NO ESCAPE.
Just don’t Multiclass
Misty step, long jump
You’d mainly get low level features with Multiclassing
You get much stronger options by sticking to one class
That feels fast to say that
Multiclassing is really difficult as a new player, it’s rarely worth it, and it can be really disappointing to miss out on high level features. I’ve played with new players who took an early multiclass and it sucked for them because they were several levels behind their peers
Multiclassing is good if you know what to do, but when starting out, def a bad idea
Literally
If you want spells as a Fighter
Just play an Eldritch Knight
I feel like bladesinger works well for all that minus the strength build
Rn my current build is level 8 arcane archer level 3 elements monk
Or
Play a Bladesinger Wizard
Or a Valor/Swords Bard
Or a Pact of the Blade Warlock
Or a War Cleric
Or a Moon Druid
Or-
You could even get a bunch of free spells with the right race and feats too
Like an Elf with Fey Touched and Shadow touched
Eh why not throw in spores too
Get 6 spells without needing slots
It's quite silly, since I can fly. I shoot my arrows then rush in fists blazing
It's not specifically a Subclass that worries about using weapons or melee attacks.
It makes them better, but it's not specifically a Gish
Random question for something that happened at my table. What do you do if someone rolls a negative initiative?
They have a 1 I think
Symbiotic entity kinda does it
Or negative initiative
Again, it's not a Gish specifically like the others.
That is their placement in the Initative then
Fair
Negative initiative is always funny to see.
My whole point was
"If you want to play a Fighter with Magic, just do these"
I’ve only ever seen 0 initiative. By me
I've had a 0 Initiative
I've seen -2 before
Exhaustion or badly roll stats can get you roll low Initative
Someone got a -2
Nothing beyond what usually happens, Lowest goes last.
It was a zombie that rolled a 1
Borajak Daniel’s the fighter, ah I missed him
Can
Orizontas in the Bad universe
They could be negative seventy billion, all that means is that they go last.
Can't wait to reach level 11 fighter level 9 monk
Hey
.
That's a good one
Tyty
Only thing I may do is change out my barbarian for a bard to help balance the party in one of the campaigns I play in because theres now 2 berserker barbarians, a ranger, paladin, and a cleric
I’m proud of that name
I'm gonna be playing a Triton Paladin named Rivilus soon lol
what happened to the color
What color?
It's still there, whaddya mean?
I wanna try a Conquest paladin
Barb fighter sounds like a good idea at face value, but you can't forget your rage is heavily weakened when wearing armor
Server icon is my guess
Only when wearing heavy armor.
Oh yeah idk
C'mon guys, I was gonna gaslight!
Just like paladin barbarian isn't a good pairing
It’s an advertising thing for the new Ravenloft book now on preorder
Yeah, hense why I can't run a gith fighter barb
I feel like I just got an ad thrown at me
Why can’t you?
So just wear Medium armor
Not can't, just means I sacrifice heavy armor
In fact the Gith are known for wearing Medium armor more than heavy armor
Barbarian buff is from wearing no armor
^
Ah, I thought it was heavy armor since it always looked like tough iron
Half Plate is a medium armor after all
It's almost like sacrificing heavy armor isn't that big of a deal for a Barbarian 🤔
As a monk main, I can always respect going to battle with nothin but the instrument of destruction you plan to bonk people with
The other downside of heavy armor is disadvantage in stealth
You also cant use spells when raging and anything concentration would go away once raging
You know medium armor can be made of that too right?
You know what I meant.
No?
Is this kind of naivety common? Anyway I meant how you wouldn't call some bulky adamantine plate armor medium armor.
Because of appearances.
-# I feel like that was a bit rude
That’s what half plate armor is.
Yeah material doesn’t apply as much because of half plate
Yes but something like steel plate is not in fact light at all in terms of apperances.
Indeed, which is why it’s medium and not light.
Exactly
Glad we can all agree there
The one Barbarians can use.
My paladin could be wearing an adamantine cod piece and it will still be medium armor if I say it's a reflavored breastplate. The appearance isn't really what matters.
Yeah, it's the category
No one’s been talking light armor too. It’s been Medium armor and Heavy armor.
I typically run clothing for barbs
My cleric doesn't wear any armor :]
Armor is nice for barbs, especially in rolled stat games
The real Barbarian players know to slap on medium armor if it's better than their Unarmored Defense
Spoiler: ||He's a Tortle, he can't lol /silly||
Honestly, if tortles were always taken seriously, I'd play more
I've enjoyed old man Artanza
Turtle Power moment
I'd take tortles more seriously if people playing them took them seriously
Too many ninja turtles and Master Oogways
And soon Gerson Deltarune
I take mine pretty seriously, he's a kind and gentle soul
He's.. more eager to kill Manshoon than you'd think
Because one of his former Students was in the Zhentarim and could've died at the hands of the party if Artanza didn't recognize him
Heavy armor usually isn't worth it anyway
That's completely false
Heavy Armor is very good for those who can have it
Gives you the highest AC out of all nonmagical equipment and even has a specialized feat.
<- variant encumbrance user
Not everyone uses encumbrance lol
It's worth it sure but it's expensive
Majority of the community from what I've seen really doesn't care about allat
And as a barb you have lots of other ways of getting high af ac
Well, Barbarians can't use Heavy armor anyway, so it's out ot the question
Why am I level 7 with less than 300 gold in my inventory
1500gp is super cheap tbh
(fwiw heavy armor actually doesn't matter that much if running encumbrance since everyone is encumbered anyway)
Where is the gold at
They're scared of letting them break the economy.
We're talking fighter/barb multiclass
its good in general, i wish light armors have some buffs itself but they mostly dont
They are either cheap or just anyone can use it
Balderdash
Players should have less gold, but things should cost way less too
Just give them more gold
This is why I use the RAW loot rules in the DMG
Bald man's gate
meh, im used to it.
After each mission we get really well paid considerating some people in that world will never have more than 50gp in their life
Level 1 parties can make 500gp per session
It's easier to give them more gold than adjust the cost of everything
Believe it or not
My Fighter who wears heavy armor qnd carries around a ton of weapons in a game that does care about encumbrance isn't even worried about it because it's almost like strength determines how much you can carry 🤔
/silly /teasing
and i never crossed the 200gp line tho
Oh sure, I don't adjust the cost of everything. I just use pretty raw dmg loot tables if designing my own module/dungeon/etc.
A good dozen of my players got over 1 million in GP value each
But how I wish the system was written from the start is not "plate armor is worth literally half its weight in gold"
Heavy armor isn't worth it if you don't have the strength to afford having it definetly, though
better to use medium and a shield
Tokii how does it feel knowing you don’t get a Dragonlance?
yeah but in which scenario someone would use it if they cant?
DM puts Belt of Hill Giant Strength in front of me
"That'll be 2000 gold"
Guess I'll save for it
3 or so levels later and I have less than 300 gold in my inventory
Would rather you just not even present it to me as a possibility
Shame
Unless a wizard or smt like that know the next area is going to be more tank than run//fight
Giving players money is something I don't agree with
Exactly lol
(I forget a lot of the time)
I play enough RPGs to know that’s one of the addicting parts.
If you're not gonna give the players gold then give them tangible rewards outside of gold
Plus equipment is how you customize your characters which DnD mainly does with Magic Items
If you're not gonna do either then what are you doing
my dm put the reward of gold in the objective tab, so he dont forgot and we check from time to time what is the general mission.
I hurt my toe
They get weight so they're overencumbered
Could just use the DMG’s table and roll it every boss fight/job completion.
I actually did give my players 600 something gold last Monday from a Wizard who failed a teleport spell and ended up in the tundra.
"Give me gold for a magic sword, or give me a magic sword, or else we're not the party to solve your problems. Good luck with the evil dragon. Bye!"
i had cut a bit my middle finger
In between sections of the finger so its going to be painful to work with
He fell for a woman and tried to teleport to where she lives.
Does your game enforce encumbrance or just carrying capacity?
Ended up in frozen hell
Let's see my fighter has
A Lance, Chain Armor, a Shied, A Silvered Short Sword, a Bunch of Rations, some Health Potions, 2 magical maces, a Flail, camping supplies and a fee other things and he just packs like a mule, it doesn't bother him a bit lol
Encumbrance is the variant rule where basically everyone is at -10' speed if still carrying a backpack
Huh. So Innmouth is the new Domain of Dread
Do people actually use encumberance?
I think he's NEAR encumbrance, but I plan on selling stuff and buying a horse anyway lol
I do.
Well regular Encumbrance is just carrying 15x your Strength score in pounds (with some exceptions)
I do.
Cause my last horse died 😔
It's been 3 settlements since he decided to get a new horse and keeps forgetting
Like it isn’t hard to get 240lbs of carrying capacity by level 1
I guess Ive always done it with in reason. Kill a dragon, pick what pieces you want to take
That’s why you buy wagons and hirelings or certain magic items and spells
That rule isn't called Encumbrance, Encumbrance is specifically the name of the variant rule
Dm: Why you wont drop those 24 logs of 10lb each?
Monday party should get a giant sled pulled by Giant Wolves.
"variant encumbrance" is redundant
No there's regular encumbrance then Variant encumbrance.
The regular rule is only ever called carrying capacity in the rulebooks
Ah I see.
To be fair...most people would have bag of holdings by like level 5
Thought you were saying carrying capacity is a variant rule.
Orizontas isn't gonna.
He'll carry everything else before putting anymore animals in danger
The rule isn't "variant encumbrance," it's "variant: encumbrance"
It’s amusing when I get players go “we got a bag of holding so we don’t need to worry about carrying capacity!”
They very quickly learn 500lbs is not enough
Bag of Holdings are very hard to get in my world
A tier 3 monster easily drops more than a bag of holding can carry
Yes, i do
You either gotta murder someone for one, steal one or create one through a special way.
You sound like my buddy. It his games he treats them like damn near legendary items
And yeah I don't give out bags of holding
In my world they effectively are I'd say.
I'm also not happy that artificers can make em
God's put up a dimensional wall that destroyed most of the bags of holding in the world
Some managed to still keep working for some reason
The restrictions of encumbrance are an important decision making factor in the game, carry weight is a resource just like spell slots and HP
I do abstract it a bit since we play pen and paper and can you imagine doing exact pound weights there
People of the world found out later that if you craft a bag of holding in a place where the dimensional wall is thin, it'll work.
Something else my buddy does that pisses me off and probably why I never play in his games. Gold can't teleport, you wear any gold...drops when you teleport
Based /j
Nah that's annoying.
Teleportation in my games would just lead to less rewards/XP probably.
Oh and bag of holdings are technically uncommon items right?
If you enforce encumbrance you make players need to plan things out carefully and think about their position in the world and make tradeoffs
NPCs being bad at teleportation is mainly a gag rather than in-world reason why they tend to fail.
People often complain that variant encumbrance limits are too low but (a) they're still more generous in 5e than in any previous edition other than 4e and (b) staying unencumbered should be hard, that's the point
It should force hard decisions
I’m very amused at my games because people began to realize Eldritch Knight is just free Wizard + Fighter at the same time
My favorite encumbrance system is probably Shadowdarks.
Since they can dump all that cash into spell scrolls
You just get slots and items take up 1 or 2.
And the subclass has the wizard spell list.
Yep, reminds me of resident evil
Shadowdark players when their hosting GM burns their character sheet after they die to a falling rock. (The residents are evil)
That system taught me that death in tabletop can be hilarious and it's okay to laugh at it.
I've (with in-setting justification) managed to find a way to penalize long distance teleportation. Using spells like teleportation circle rolls on the teleport table, using the very familiar difficulty. The Teleport spell itself treats the difficulty as if it were one level higher (as in, we figure out the difficulty of Teleport, and then pick the next less likely difficulty).
Which is going a long way to not let players and npcs just teleport everywhere
I think the in-world justification for why teleports suck is the Goddess of Magic gets bored and sometimes just screws people's teleport spells.
I don't have a justification yet so I'll brainstorm it.
Mine is that the weave & leylines are kinda fading/destabilizing over time, which makes long distance travel through them much riskier
That's a good one.
