idk how to not me introverted 🙁
It can also be difficult to maintain a relationship with someone when the common ground (work, school, a hobby) is gone.
she was a mom with horrible husband from what i heard so
Meet a extroverted person who will take you to other people and hangouts
um
Jokes aside i get your point but you can only reach out is my advice (like try a dnd club if you have one or an online game here)
For D&D I'd still suggest looking out for teen friendly groups in our LFG channels here or on our D&D Beyond forums and elsewhere.
and also i talk to girls and now that they are in puberty they hate me now too so i have no one 🙁
Try out oneshots, Adventure League, Westmarches.
Just chill out here and learn/talk a bit about the game.
but i like to be in a school library to look at the books they have but its all for school nothing cool apart from harry potter but yea
i did westmarchers once
i remember hiding behind a tree
I basically got into D&D through NwN 1(Neverwinter Nights) Persistant Worlds which were essentially westmarches for 3e. They can be chaotic, dramatic spaces, but also flexible and you can meet a lot of players, some of which might become lifelong players.
also i want to speak in my language when in campaigns cuz i dont really know english very well if yk what i mean
How did everyone else get into dnd?
The one that's on Steam?
randomly lol
Yeah, steam has the Enhanced Edition, which really help revitalise the community!
I don't recall. But it was only a couple years ago.
I've been looking and I'm like, "Oh?!"
my cousin played it and cuz stranger things
I got into it because of the ending of stranger things
2 am 😭
the NwN 1 Modules (adventures) are okay in of them selves (Hordes of the Underdark was fun), and the Persistant Worlds are very much like digital westmarches, for 3.0 edition.
i did bc of beggining lol
Played a oneshot 5 years ago, and just kept going after that
I think Stranger Things, Baldur's Gate 3 and streamed games like Critical Role really got a lot of new folk into D&D
also idk why i like being alone it brings me some kind of peace idk
introvertion kicks in lol
whats timid?
true
Critical Role got me into the shows which made me even more into dnd
Fun little fact-
D&D missed out on a big boost way back in 1982, with E.T. (The Extraterrestial).
In the movie at the beginning they show the boys playing D&D (much like in Stranger Things)
Except it's not called D&D. Nothing says D&D. Only people who knew D&D would recognise it instantly as D&D.
Because when they asked TSR (the company that owned D&D at the time) if it was okay to show D&D in their movie, and showed them the script, TSR said no because the script mentioned money being on the table, and they didn't want D&D to be associated with gambling.
The movie comes out and turns out that money was pizza money. And also, the movie was a HUGE hit.
That’s interesting
You'll get used to long messages on this discord 😉
What’s everyone’s current character class and subclass in your campaign?
im not in campaign and i have lots of character so i cant choose witch one tell me witch u wanna know kali eleven or will
You should go to sleep
who sent a sad white jellyfish
Forever DM lmao
i have an apocalyptic time traveler kid character 😭
Baldur's gate.
Was an echo knight fighter last I played
who can teleport and time travell
Ty for your service 🫡
Then it escalated, and now I'm the necromancer who's really good at death threats
Currently DMing a 1e game, because we want to try something other than 5e.
But for fun I tried rolling up a 1e character and ended up with an Assassin.
idk why but i feel like a great player but i know soo little about dnd 😭
whats 1e..?
1st edition
oh
Go to sleep, or I'll start posting extra, extra long paragraphs on the history of D&D 😛
I got a flash back to when the first game I played my goblin warlock won a pretzel eating contest and got his picture on the pretzel wall in a very German city we were stopping at
💀 sad little white jellyfish
That's awesome, I love that
why is elgate typing so long oh no..
You asked for it
It was my first ever character and I lowkey did not know what to do with him after his arc
What was his arc?
No but please check direct messages from Dyno
So, D&D started in 1974 with Original D&D, just known then as D&D. Typically fans called them the 'Red box' or 'White box' and required knowledge of an even earlier wargame called Chainmail-
In fact you could consider that the first D&D was the fantasy supplement for Chainmail!
Now in Oe, the only classes were Fighting Man, Magic Use and Cleric. Dwarf, Elf and Halfling were also classes. You could not mix species and class yet.
This only lasted 3 years until they decided to refresh with properly tested and more fleshed out rules into two different lines-
Basic D&D and Advance D&D
wait um SORRY my english is to bad so idk what i just typed wait lemme check
Aaah😳
You going to go to bed, or should I start on Advanced D&D?
OH NO NO sorry i meant to say high school not middle Sorry!
Elgate, do you mind explaining the entire lore leading up to the dracorage?
i messed up by saying middle not high school bc my dumb brain tought it was the same
Maybe follow that up with a nice lesson in Netherese history (all of it)
Kill the higher devil that had him in a soul contract and steal his power
Maybe delve into all the version of Eladrin across editions too (Fey, Celestial, Humanoid..)
Draconic language and literature
All of my conspiracy notes on Tharizun, Elder Elemental God/Eye, Ghaunadaur and Jubilex
That's pretty sweet. I can see how ending that plot would leave a void in the character
What happened to Eladrins in 2024?
Myeah but he was literally my first ever character
You can still use the MPMM ones, which note the difference between the humanoid ones (which PCs play) and the Fey ones (Which are NPC only).
also i like drawing random stuff than like talking i class ir something idk
goodnight
So for Eladrin, In AD&D to 3.5 they were celestial/outer planar beings from Arborea who only *resembled *elves. They were not actually elves.
In 4e Eladrin was another term for high elves essentially, as 4e had a great rearranging of the lore.
For 5e:
Humanoid (Elf) Eladrin (The playable Eladrin race)
Fey (Elf) Eladrin (MPMM NPC Eladrin)
Celestial (Elf) Elves (not actually referred to as Eladrin, but matches the description from previous editions of celestial elflike natives born on Arborea) (DMG p.60)
Arborea is home to many elves and elven deities. Elves born on this plane have the celestial type and are wild at heart, ready to battle evil in a heartbeat. Otherwise, they look and behave like normal elves.
-(DMG p.60)
So far 'Eladrin' from AD&D and 3.5 (Bralani, Course, Noviere, Shiere, Firre, Ghale and Tulani ) have yet to appear in 5e under those names.
STOP scaring me
scarying *
The FR wiki has had a nightmare trying to figure out how to categorise this as they like having continous lore and updating their pages with the newest canon. They've gone ahead and seperated them into:
Fey eladrin, elven inhabitants of the Feywild (matching 5e)
High elves, or "common" eladrin, (Matching 4e)
Noble eladrin, powerful elf-like fey, and (Matching 3e)
Celestial eladrin, a race of elf-like celestials. (Matchingn AD&D)
also make me a recepie of how to cook a demogorgon
is there a place for me to post non dnd art or something cuz I’m getting tired of this
Not on this server.
someoen said ''No bc this server is not an art server''
someone cast sleep on me pls
I can time you out to force you to go to sleep, if this would help.
um
It is evident that this particular solution would be utterly inconsequential.
However, if you desire, you may attempt
Alrighty. Have a good day.
Farewell for now, I shall condescend to take leave of this conversation.
Uhhh bye
Good luck on sleep
I should be going too tbh
Question: is it a smart idea to challenge a dragon to a rap battle with my 20 charisma in order to convince him to leave a town?
Permit me to elucidate your inquiry. Shall you surrender to the tender mercies of Morpheus, and succumb to a nocturnal slumber?
The upsides of this working far outweigh the downsides of failure
A Flytag with a Dragon? They've been known to shout back, or possible just eat you. Depends on the type of dragon.
Morpheus doesn’t like me much so no
Do it and tell us how it goes
Alas, that was an unfortunate occurrence indeed.
It's a blue chromatic dragon who's trying to become a god because the problems that my party has been trying to solve for the locals, was part of a big scheme to help him achieve godhood and ascend.
So I'm thinking of instead doing this whole boss fight against this BBEG, I challenge it to a rap battle and embarress him infront of everyone.
At this juncture, being precisely 2:40 in the dead of night, I shall retire to slumber, bidding you a most cordial nocturnal adieu.
Theeeen he probably isn't going to be persuaded by a rap battle, and is more likely to be a sore loser about it- or a terrible gloat.
Byee
It can all be a distraction while my party set up a trap!
I’ll join you in an hour or two depending on when I start up planning a session again it’s nearly 2
Farewell for the present, I anticipate our rendezvous tomorrow.
Great plan
Some blues might be lawful enough and curious enough to agree to a thing (There is one blue dragon who's known for being able to be bribed with songs and tales and likes kidnapping bards for their hoard).
But one planning on being a god might be a bit too arrogant.
My DM wants us to try and be more "creative" about our approaches, so this is my thought process.
Maybe the blue dragon is just misunderstood could attempt giving em therapy
Talk them out of it. Somehow roll a nat 20 and it turns into a therapy session 😭
Exactly
Depends also on if your DM is using Crits= auto success as well.
"Who hurt you?"
This is very true
My DM seems quite chill about things and is willing to let us try different approaches to what he had originally planned. So far, he's been good at "rolling with it" while being fair on outcomes.
So it's kind of a toss-up. I can see it go both ways.
Honestly give it a shot what’s the worst that could happen?
I mean we're ready for the battle anyways so... that's plan B.
I actually didn't know this! That's neato.
Hey everyone! I'm new here ^^ I'm also new to DnD, I've never played the game but always wanted to! I would love to get to know you and learn from you all.
Hey. I only been playing for 2 months but I can still talk about what I've learned so far and how it generally works.
I basically took the "trial by fire" approach as my first campaign (the one I recently talked about, as we are nearing the end), I hopped in without doing a first session (I think it was session 6) and my DM encouraged me to be a sorcerer to fill in a gap of a player who left.
So it's definitely been a learning curve, but I'm enjoying the challenge! I learned a lot of things I wished I learned early on in previous sessions.
I've been dm'ing on-and-off for about 4-5 years, so I'm always game to talk about that lol
Yeah I learned a lot of things in my first session, number 1 is to not turn the main damage dealer into a giant ape via Polymorph (he liked being a Giant Ape though)
Note to self: if you are brand new to the game with 0 knowledge, I personally don't think sorcerer is the best class to start out as, but it's definitely a fun and challenging one to learn!
I haven't made a playable character for myself yet. But I just finished spending the last 16 hours on a site called Roll20 making a cool character as an npc that doubles as the end game "boss". I have like 20+ pages in a google doc where I wrote up a story for him as well as campaign notes
I'd love to show them off to any GM who might be interested in using him in a story
Most people here will use roll20 or dndbeyond. You can look for sessions DMs post in #looking-for-players , and find a date, time, and resource access that works for you.
You could also manually put in an entry in both #find-a-game and therefore to#looking-for-dm if you wish to have DMs or other people message you to join their campaign.
A good group will work with someone who's brand new, help them learn, and allow for mistakes and learning to be done, while having a DM that's willing to mold and lean with the party. (This is just my opinion but I think many people share the same feelings).
I personally asked my DM and my party on what I should do on each turn and interaction for the first 2 sessions, then I tried my 3rd session by myself without help.
Sounds cool, I'll definitely check those channels out
There are commands this server has that gives you brief overviews of the classes. Simply do ?tag new [class].
Monk
Dart in and out of melee while striking fast and hard
Monks use rigorous combat training and mental discipline to align themselves with the multiverse and focus their internal reservoirs of power. Different Monks conceptualize this power in various ways: as breath, energy, life force, essence, or self, for example. Whether channeled as a striking display of martial prowess or as a subtler manifestation of defense and speed, this power infuses all that a Monk does.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 12
Dex. 15
Con. 13
Int. 10
Wis. 14
Cha. 8
Likes: Unarmed combat
Complexity: High
Starting HP: 8 + Con. modifier
Now this is "suggested" standard array for points when you make your character, but you don't need to strictly follow it. Ultimately you decide how you want your points work for your abilities. Some DMs would rather have you do a roll system and use the numbers to decide what you get. Always consult your DM about how they want character creation to go, and what version of DND you're doing.
But it does give you a great idea on what to focus on when making your characters.
apparently i dont have permisssion to post in that chat and idk why
Did you go to #find-a-game ?
No one can chat regularly in the lfg channels, you have to use the appropriate commands
Which are found in #find-a-game
^^ that channel tells you the commands you are to do.
Speaking of making characters, is there a place here where i can kinda show off a character I made and have other people talk about it and give insights?
In my screen I beat you!
Nuh uhhhhh!
Uh huh!
I'll be the tie breaker, Nugget was first
good night, Im new here, any kind person to show me where to play? and how to start a party?
#find-a-game will tell you everything you need about getting started.
k thx mate
np
one more thing, what is a character sheet?
A character sheet is basically a visual description of your character, their species, class, all your stats, any spells, items, everything you need. Whenever you do a D&D session, you will always have your character sheet on standby that you will use as a reference as you play.
Online, many people have roll20 or dndbeyond to have their digital character sheet they can edit as the campaign and sessions go along. You yourself track any spells you cast, any items you buy/sell in your inventory, how much HP you have, any conditions you get, etc.
The DM will tell you what you would change on your character sheet as the session goes on.
No Tren1ty was first
I posted my character notes into the #character-discussion chat. Sadly it looks inactive at the moment. But if anyones interested feel free to check it out! ^^
I think people are still reading it, it's 25 pages long after all
Wassup bro
Hello there,
New player here. I found this Discord link on the D&D: Beyond forums. If I'm in the wrong channel, please direct me to the correct one.
I'm looking to start playing D&D online. I've made a character. I did my best to make it alright, as I have no clue what I'm doing. I also have a friend who is just as new as me who wants to play.
I've been an avid gamer since I was about 5. I'm 37 now. MMORPG/RPG are my main genres.
I hope someone can guide me to the correct DM's or other players to dive in.
Thanks!
Thank you 😅 I put a lot of effort into him as an npc because the idea for him originally started as a 5 part poem I wrote about myself. I havent posted that though, but in a metaphorical sense - Kroaeth is me
who the hell are you?
Kiss me
#find-a-game can help you!
WHA-
ZUP
Thanks!
Joking aside, i'm a begginee someone who could help me teaching me The basic things of D&D role please 🙏
ye me too pls
copy paste bruh
What do you mean?
nah i meant for the other guy
Hey there, sorry if I'm in the wrong channel or anything but I have an idea for something in my campaign that I'm hoping someone can help me flesh out. It's like a little minigame I guess, but if anyone is interested in brainstorming a little, just PM me or something and we can talk about it. Thanks!
Hello not sure if this is the right place to ask this but can you buy things ala- cart on dnd beyond like one subclass and not the whole book?
Not any more - that ended a couple of years back now.
thank you i am glad that you are not dying
i have a question only for those who are experienced, im new to DND and i just wanted to ask, when making a backstory for my character, should i keep it shallow so its easy to integrate?
Is there a way for minors to find DnD games?
someone just did a idchbtriicf and hit 80% of the things in turn order (allies included)
If you don’t have a DM, yes.
If you DO have a DM, give it some depth, but not wayyy too much
A good DM should cooperate with you to integrate the character into the world
I'd prefer more than less because it's easy to ask you to cut back or modify things than it is to try to tease more information out of someone.
Find a game that's not 18+, they exist!
your the opera singer, nice to meet you again
hi hi
you and nugget helped me when i first joined the server and trns out i love dnd
Awesome!
im 18+ and missed out on alotta time but yea, man im RPING the shiz outta my character. sometimes i stumble but he says im doing great ahhaha
Great to hear!
Oh heads up don’t share your exact age here, it’s against server rules
ooooo
Must’ve been at least a month now
so you do remember
I try to, though you mentioning Lady’s opera singing helped
I haven’t seen her mention it in a while
hahahah, i was like ill be an apprentice someone let me into there game!!!!!!!!!
You weren’t the only one, many newcomers do ask people to take them under their wing
Unfortunately, there’s far more of them then there are of us 😓
I have more personally taught a few players, but for the most part it doesn’t happen
yeah, few people really take their time to teach
Because why would they? Not many have the time nor commitment to teach randos on the internet
would love a thing of veteran players teaching a group of players with some oneshots in a big voicechat
Could be interesting
yeah yeah, like recreation for baby players
it'd probably be pretty rough imo if not handled well
My shark fella managed to accidentally rizz up a halfling girl after curing her curse and helping kill a monster on her and her parties behalf and with a natural 20 Persuasion check afterwards, they had a nice date
Life is swag
i need to lock in for monday, even if my health probably won't want me to.
Give a Tarrasque an Ioun stone of Mastery, Bless, and a +3 weapon
Nah, my Monday party hasn't awakened the Tarrasque yet.
Get a +27 to hit
Give it a Vorpal Sword and 10 portent die that are all 20s
Silly question.
Is there a way to play by yourself?
I’m a dad and very time restricted.
Yeah I think DM’s guild has stuff for Solo Play
I remember GinnyDi doing a video on it
Solo play can be fun.
Yeah it was a neat experiment
Tarrasque with Tenser's Transformation, Conjure Minor Elementals, Spirit Guardians and Bless
glyph of warding
Many a concentration
random thought, are there any deities tied to a specific element?
the second generation giant gods
Thrymm is ice, Surtr is fire, Stronmaus is lightning and air, Memnor is also air (clouds), etc
Skoreaus and grolantor are both associate with earth
quick question because now im curious, what is the best subclass of artificer in your opinions as i think battle smith because of how well rounded it is, but i see how someone could see armorer as being better
artillerist
how so
shield spell, decent spell list, th cannons are good support (thp one)
same with battle smith they also get shield just extra attack and a little robot buddy
the thp and spell list is mostly why artillerist is the best
is it because of fireball?
not just fireball. #optimization can probably explain it better than i can
There are the Elemental Evil Princes
Imix for Fire, Olhydra for Water, Ogremarch for Earth, and Yan-C-Bin for Air
is there one associated with thunder?
i prefer utility rather than full damage output but ill check them out anyways
That would be Air.
You could also use Thor
i thought they arent deities though
The Norse Pantheon is in D&D. Like Tyr is the same Tyr from Norse Mythology
Yeah there is a notably distinction used of Gods vs Primordials
Like Gods vs Archfey or Gods vs Archdevils etc.
they already have utility
Alright, my arcane university party consists of a gnome wizard, an elf artificer, and a goliath druid
im very excited :)
and artillerist provides more
yes
abjurer, alchemist, and land respectively for their subclasses, or the ones they'll choose at lvl 3 :)
i get it, ive learned the basics and i dont have experience but now my passion makes up for some of that, no cringe stops me thats why RP is easier to get into.
As they say, to be cringe is to be free
But there is a limit for me, and you bet I have to mute my mic to laugh
Oh absolutely
Was baby talking a gnome, I couldn't help it
It's not a DnD session if there's no moment that absolutely makes you explode in laughter
I just noticed something: is a 2024 artificer able to have proficiency in martial weapons? It only says they are proficient in simple, and I don;t see anything saying that a weapon created my magic item plans makes you proficient in them
ah, like artilerist, I see
Artillerist specifically gives Proficiency with RANGED Martial weapons
Battlesmith is all Martial Weapons
heya yall
Hello, gaymer
wowza
Greetings, individuals who hopefully exist
Zawow
ngl I am struggling to find a dm I like the last 3 times I had found a dm drama stuck in this discord server
(not with me but other players)
and it would end fast
It's a lot of trial and error. I've had a lot of campaigns end due to drama irl, so it's precarious
It feels good when the group is finally coherent, so just hang in there
I just want one good game
Does Magic Mouth require you to speak or can you make other noises such as blowing a whistle (specifically an Aztec death whistle?)
Then speak the message, which must be 25 words or fewer
its equally as hard from the other side of the table
finding a good group of players that are engaing, invested and are good eggs.
but once you find your grouo, youre set!
Fairpoint, but my arguments that is isn’t the DM’s job to regulate who they want
I mean, hell they’re the one hosting it
yrah, but sometimes players show their true colors once you start playing vs the interview process.
Especially when players start to headbutt a bit when there is tense conflict
its a group effort, the DM is just the "judge" it isnt fully on them to babysit their players
already busy trying to juggle and intertwine multiple unique backstories into a. ampaign while both give players what they want while striving to balabce things
(sorry, i cant type on mo ile worth a damn anymore...double wrist surgery suuuucks)
Oh no im just a figment of everyones imagination
ngl my favorite thing an artificer can do is to make an airpod, a flat item to doom scroll "dnd instagram", and a (non-nicotine) vape at level 1
you just might want a bard to get any music tho as it doesnt come prebuilt for music
at lv2 you can actually make a sending stone so then you can actually make a better airpod, just put it in a tavern where they play often
Gerp
So who is volo really. As far as i know hes the one who has written a few dnd books and is a minor wizard
have a question
192 backgrounds, 838 classes, 439 feats, 329 races is this enough character options or should i add more?
Crustacean races are immune to time manipulation
For a 5e system, there’s a pretty big imbalance, should have more feats
Would an Oath of the Watchers/Hexblade/Abberant Mind multiclass work
Three way? Like, shouldn’t be the worst thing in the world
The three classes make sense
Made a genie paladin for an upcoming 10th lvl oneshot
DM said a 10th level character or a CR5 monster, any Mundane items and 1 magic item(up to rare). Trying to decide if there's something other than a helm of teleportation that would help me and the party most.
Magic weapon is just pretty generic for a one shot
Like you can play a CR5 monster?
Who would take that when it's 5 equivalent levels less than a level 10 character
If griffons saddlebag is allowed the Amulet of the Sentinel is pretty good
Theres also the Jordans of Jaunting (Boots of Speed) that I personally like
Amulet of Health if your con score needs to be higher
Magic weapon albeit generic can never go wrong with a flame tongue
Or one of the funny ones like that sunblade
+2 shield can offer an extra 4 ac if your down for that
Cloak of Displacement
Diviners Dice...
Theres a lot of good choices
what is everyones opinions on using ai to create a back story. im very new to dnd. hate ai. just was about to join a campaign where they wrote me a back story that i LOVED. i then got scetchy vibes at the end and decied to put it through a ai scanner and the whole thing is ai. even the story line they 'made'. i called them out and said hey this is not it.
is this normal in dnd for people to use ai?
(they didnt tell me and acted like it was their own at the start.)
I don’t like my players using AI for backstory
And I’ve never done it myself
That being said, it’s not uncommon for many tables (for better or for worse)
I’ve only had one player do it; and I had a chat with them afterwards
Meh, backstory is a bit wonky for ai. If it helps you get into the game then sure why not but tbh you're gonna be less invested in that character
I will say tho, this server is fairly anti AI, so I don’t see many AI users that don’t get shut down fast.
But the topic does come up fairly commonly
oh ok ;-; thank you her response when i said thats yuck and at least tell people was 'Like why would i write these all thing if an Ai can do much better you just have to give a perfect prompt with I did cause I know how to use and if in this era you are not using AI then you are finished'
Personally I absolutely suck at backstory. But Id rather have my all natural 3 sentence scrap before asking Ai to create one for me
i just felt very icky because i gave a little brief of and idea and she said i like that i also have an idea and will combine them.. which she didnt just just purely used ai
right! thats what i was thinking. thank you
yea :')
Yeah, I mean it could definitely inspire an idea
i get that too! the way she said she had an idea and could combine it with mine then just used ai was eugh...
thank you for kinda reassuring me in that ;-;
A backstory can't be that hard to make, it can be simple or flavorful depending on how you want your character to be in the campaigns settings, you don't have to use Ai. It doesn't need to be overly complex
When one of the lore scribes were making a world anvil on my character, they absolutely struggled with my backstory segment ~.~
see its not like i didnt know how or didnt want to. i LOVE making back stories and i would of made one by myself, when she said she had an idea i was like sick we can kinda bounce ideas off eachother
True, sometimes character interactions based on backstory is cool

yeaa! thats why i was like ok we can do this together. because she knows the other characters and stuff
thank you guys! ;-;
Hard to say, since encounters that are too hard numbers-wise may still be perfectly fine encounters for the story that is being told.
For instance, introducing your BBEG when the pcs can't yet stand up to them isn't supposed to be fair.
Getting trampled by 50 elks during level 3
True, those are not as bad because its like
"Oh, we're not meant to win this"
But im talking about where you get no plot armor and death is on the line
Then I don't think I've had any of those.
After all, the DM is also interested in keeping things interesting.
It was a downtime in the campaign, we did a random herding quest and the barbarin slapped an elk, bro a d20 if the elk runs or something else... Bro rolled a Nat 1 and the elks aggro
Idk I just experienced a raid with 5 lvl 12 people
(3 paladins
1 barb
1 cleric)
And there were some enemies that could
- Hit through resistance
- Can't be critted against
- Can't be blocked by anti crit effects (Adamantine armor)
That doesn't sound unbalanced rather than adversarial DMing, ngl.
+maiming
+merciless
Cancelling beneficial effects needs to be done with care, because doing so invalidates character building choices. Few things feel as bad as that.
Yeah...it was definitely not an enjoyable experience
3 of us died, but we chained revives and greater restoration to get us all up at the end
I definitely would’ve talked to the DM after session if I felt adversarial DMing was going on
I guess the enemies’ special features aren’t terribly specific to shutting down martials, nor terribly effective at doing so (crits don’t add a ton of damage unless you’re specifically stacking die to do so) but they do seem targeted to counter specific perceived problems
Given you had 3 Paladins, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess your Paladins found success in spamming smites.
I had a 30 AC artificer with adamantine plate in my campaign and I never cancelled their AC nor ignored the adamantine effect, because the entire point of the artificer pushing for that particular build was based on the assumption that higher AC means something and that the DM wouldn't just randomly add bonuses to the enemies.
Kinda, one was focused on protecting the queen
(Warding bond kinda screwed him tho)
Evil queen I hope?
Nope
Hey chat!!
I see, there is a lot more to this story.
Hey!
How are you?
I mean I could definitely say more but I dont want to insert a wall of text in essentially general
Good, just had a heroes feast breakfast and I'm thinking about my next session. How about you?
Good. I am trying to convince my school to make an D&D club but they told me to talk to the counselor but nobodies knows who is the counselor
I'll just add a random though that may or may not be relevant to the situation, but I'm tempted to think that the DM may have wanted you to not do what you did for one reason or another. But this is something you should talk with them about, as we are just randos on the internet.
Ohh, that's a bit silly. I'm sure you'll find out if you keep asking people. A D&D club sounds cool!
I am trying. It's a shame. Because one of my friend really wants to play with me. But two guys is probably not enough, maybe at least three or four people
One on one D&D can actually work! But yeah, I'd say three players and one DM is a really good base group size. I usually play with one DM and four players.
To give you some background this is a community of multiple dms and this is a new continent made specifically to be difficult. Plus everyone has a lot of magic items to make their strong build. So I can understand how it can be difficult to balance
Alright. Balancing is definitely one of these things you get a feeling for as a DM, but there are helpful tools out there, like the encounter building guidelines in the DMG, the encounter builder on D&DBeyond and the kobold fight club website.
It's not witchcraft and it definitely doesn't require cancellations of pc buffs.
Even if someone has an unhittable AC for example, you can still affect them with saving throws.
Even if you succeed on all saving throws, most powerful effects still cause half damage.
True
And multiple paladin auras don't stack
Actually that was another enemy in the encounter
A creature with 10hp but ran 120ft and if it died it essentially spawned a fireball on it
At the end of the round we had to roll for more enemies to spawn. Those guys were set at a d3
Ah, the exploding enemy archetype, a classic.
People who are interested in homebrew will go to that channel themselves, no need to advertise it in other channels.
I'm not, I'm just asking
I was wondering. In #dnd-advertisements are you able to promote a dnd server? Or is it purely media/art
A dnd server is #looking-for-community
Ah thx
Type /looking-for community
Im planning on promoting the community im in
Yeah, but it's hard finding people, probably they are busy and have a schedule like me and the time zone
hi I'm a new member
That's why a club with a regular schedule might actually work the best. If people can rely on the session always happening at the same time, they can plan for it and make space in their schedule.
Hey bro 👋
Welcome! If you're also new to D&D, you can find lots of helpful resources in #dnd-newcomers and the pins.
Love the pfp
Greetings, esteemed individuals.
Ah, didn't know I was able to change my pfp in this server. Was that a new change?
do u have nitro?
Ive had nitro for about 5 years straight
Wait, you need nitro to change your pfp in this server?
In any server
I was under the impression that was every server
It is, but some servers have the setting turned off where you cant change it per server
Its usually big ones like these.
And what does mine look like?
No,it's not from Bleach. It's Naoya from JJK
Close enough
Yes
cereal killer 😭
Perchance, esteemed companions, should I adjudicate upon the proposition of fashioning additional personae for the realm of Dungeons and Dragons?
The query posed is quite intriguing, what are the salient particulars surrounding this enigmatic query?
You mean finding a group to play with?
nope
Then you’ll need to clarify
Btw,what do sorcerer do? Are they just like JJK sorcerers or different. Like, they do spells or anything like that?
I endeavored to concoct a novel persona for the venerated Dungeons & Dragons.
So character creation
Ergo, the definitive assertion affirming accuracy, previously verbatim.
ok ill stop bc no one understands me lol
r/iamverysmart Lol
They’re full casters that get a more limited spell selection in exchange for the ability to modify spells directly, such as increasing the number of potential targets, removing spell components, etc
Interesting
I might as well be one. It's hard between rouge or sorcerer to choose
i have 2/3 sorcerer characters
u can multi class but i dont reccomend multi classing rogue and sorcerer or maybe is it good? im not sure
It’s just needlessly verbose tbh. If you’re already familiar with character creation then feel free to post, discuss, ask questions about, or otherwise get feedback on them in #character-discussion
I'd generally not multiclass until you've got a firm footing in the game.
I don't know if multi classing is a good idea
Yeah...can flame blade proc sneak attack?
Assuming you attacked with a qualifiying weapon and the sneak attrack triggers are present, sure.
Yeah multiclassing usually is best as a means to a goal rather than a question in and of itself
i mean sorcerer and rogue are quite viable together
Paladin is just the more viable option tbh
I do like rogue with a sorc dip
Don't even need advantage. Advantage is one of the two general triggers, the other being having one ally next to the enemy.
frr
Well yeah, but im talking about the weapon being used
ah right, yeah
It has to be light?
Finesse or ranged
i have sorcerer kali sorcerer eleven and wizard will
Ah, that was it
It does sounds cool. But for an character with an sailor background, probably not gonna work
theres a sailor background?
and for a sailor if ur going pirate rogue will be perfect
Flame blade is in the shape of a scimitar which does have the finesse property
Yeah. My character is an pirate rogue
noice
I think I will remain with it
i have 4 characters so i cant choose witch to main
ill soon make 5th and 6th character
While it does say that, it doesn't actually assign the Finesse property to it, so RAW it wouldn't work.
I had also automatically assumed that you had meant Green Flame Blade, because that cantrip uses an actual weapon, so my bad on assuming that.
Damn
i once played with a party member that was rogue and every time she was nervous she started dancing she once started dancing on a table in a tavern LOL
Nah, I was really reaching for the 3d6+sneak attack
If things sound too good to be true, they probably are

Thats why dnd has homebrew
should i make steve or eddie next? or someone else
Where "is it too good to be true" is answered by the DM.
can i eat my dice they look tasty?
That part is answered by a little "donation" to their paypal
Hi chat, I feel like drawing peoples dnd characters for fun but I don’t know where to go for that since a lot of the categories on this server I unfollowed a long time ago
#dnd-advertisements would be the right place (even if not paid)
#dnd-arts-and-crafts probably?
That's for sharing the images
True
hey i would like something to be made if its not a problem?
So in sources for a character what are idel to enable
nuggie ima go write a story 😄
Is that where you can share commissioned art too?
Depends on your game. If you're just doing a character for practice, have what you like.
If the game says 2024 Basic only, better turn off those extra options.
Oh I’m not looking to advertise, even if it’s for free
I’m just looking to do fanart to practice
I don’t even have a portfolio for that stuff
Id be down if you'd like?
Well then you can just share your pictures in #dnd-arts-and-crafts
But if you're looking for people to give you characters to draw, then the right place is #dnd-advertisements
Gotcha, thank you
The wording of the description makes it sound like it has to be your art
Would you like me to dm you?
Sure! Why not
bro ignored me 🙁
I wouldn’t mind!
haha tyy 😄
Sorry the cool down for this chat is pretty slow but yeah, feel free to dm with any details of your character
Im guessing its going to a character from Stranger Things in a fantasy outfit.
I heard the final season was a masterpiece
opinions on the final season are very mixed yeah lol
correct
eh not really but it was good for me idk other people say its bad bc final battle was only like 10 minutes but it was still good
for me personaly i liked it
Anecdotal evidence are going to Anecdote.
Not a hard guess TBH
i should fr play eleven from s1 cuz im introverted and that would make me like eleven 😄
#️⃣ Dead server
Valid target Animate Dead: thread Necromancy version
i found rasputin song made of stranger things scenes 😭
Good morning gang

Genuine question for other DM's and Players alike, how do we feel about a lot of the newer 2025 spells and subclasses? Namely from the Adventures/Heroes of Faerun books. Like spellfire sorcerer for example, or all the new Wizard spells
some cool stuff, a lot of questionably balanced stuff
I personally am a little averse to them, because I feel like a lot of the new Wizard spells and this new Sorcerer subclass are stepping dangerously close to other classes toes
Hope for errata, you think?
ha, I have zero hope anything gets errata'ed for balance reasons
I generally dont mind "stepping on toes" if stuff is balanced and fun btw
I dunno
I feel like wizard is already the do everything but tank class, but now it's getting to heal, deflect attacks, and conjure a bunch of constructs?
Notably conjure constructs is not an Artificer spell
that was a bad call, yeah. nothing got added to the artificer spell list
Spellfire Sorcerer is just Sorcerer but you get access to a bunch of divine spells
spellfire sorc is just divine soul sorc 2.0 in that way, arguably less so
and divine sorc does make a lot of sense imo
Divine Soul Sorcerer at best gets cure wounds, boosts other people's healing, and then turns into an angel
DSS got the whole cleric spell list
they had to pick them, but you could have every single spell be a cleric spell
Ah, missed that part at the beginning of divine magic
I mean still, I'm not big on that either
I think sorcerers having divine magic does make a lot of sense in lore.
No cleric? Sure, fine, take from the cleric spells, otherwise you're just making your cleric feel less important because you can do what they do with twincast
My gripe is mostly with the Wizard getting a bunch of new spells that just do what the other classes do
I guess, they certainly didnt need even more versatility
but I dont think a wizard can do what a DSS/Bard/Druid or cleric can do in terms of healing/support, even with those spells
Technically, they got 5 new spells & 1 removed
I mean nothing in the faerun book was added to the artificer list
True but I don't expect anything to be 'open' to the Artificer
Unless it was like, Everything-series
Eh I think almost every book in 2014 rules that added new spells post rising from the last war also had some for artificer.
True. I think it was Strixhaven & Astral Adventure.
Shame there weren't more Spells from these two but oh well
fizbans too
Circle Casting is the best
So basically still does everything because tanking does not exist
I was just allowed to triple stack a smite and dealt 69 damage as a level 5 paladin. The guy turned to ash
Peak paladin gameplay
That’s sort of the point of wizards right? They have the most versatility of any class, but they can’t use all the spells without preparing them beforehand, and they’re supposed to be extremely squishy
Just prepare the good spells and armor dip
Spellfire sorcery honestly is so boring to me in a thematical aspect that I'll buff every other sorcerer just to make my sorc player pick something else
Wizards could always heal
As someone who is playing a wizard to tier 4 right now it’s always bizarre how these arguments of “wizard best” keep coming up. Yeah wizard has a ton of versatility with their spells, but unless the player is meta gaming they have no idea of what’s coming in the next session. They could easily have the wrong spells, monsters with resistance, or situations that don’t call for their kit.
Last session I got pummeled in to the ground and ended up healing the monsters with a poorly rolled Prismatic Spray while the fighter and barbarian T Posed on everything.
The best spell I cast all session was Foresight on the fighter
I'm gonna be honest, that sounds like your fault
Foresight is a level 9 spell why did you use foresight instead of wish or true pollymorph? Also prismatic spray is a bad spell even in their one
I feel like there are a lot better ways of offering retro-active advice on a situation than this. Remember folk that you will not have been given all the details, so when someone shares a humorous anecdote of how something can go wrong piling in the criticism is not the most helpful response
heyo
There's no attempt at helping them though. Nor are they asking for advice.
Then to be clearer- Be more polite in your responses. If you're not offering advice, you don't need to offer critique either.
If their argument that wizards are blown out of proportion is based on how they played their wizard, that's a good reason for us to criticize how they played it. It doesn't make wizards worse.
Hello, yes.
i mean somthing that isnt supposed to be there
If the way I put it offended them, then I will definitely apologize.
How do y’all handle entering doors? Me and my playgroup have landed on just seal team 6-ing every door, but I can tell it’s annoying our DM and he’s going to make that backfire on us sometime soon.
I don't think wizard best, nobody is arguing that wizard best
I think wizard get too much when martial lacking
I like to slide a snake familiar in through any small crevices a worn wooden door might have
I turn the handle
I open the door
One time I had a player try to slip their familiar and watch through its eyes as it entered into a portal into an astral realm where it's body was immediately fractaled into oblivion
So just to be sure, I went and took a look at the entire wizard spell list, and found a grand total of 3 healing spells (including the new ones form adventures/heroes of Faerun)
- False Life, you can give one creature 2d4 Temp HP,
- Vampiric Touch, you can heal yourself half of the damage dealt from 3d6 Necrotic
- and this is really pushing it, Wish
So unless we're hanging on the technicality that wizards have a couple spells that allow for healing or something similar, no, wizards don't heal
guys should i play dnd in high school cuz there are more clubs librarys and stuff?
cuz i cant find anyone for dnd now
Clerics have the versatility to be a lot of different things, same with Druids, but it doesn't change that their spell lists in particular are more tuned in towards support and healing spells, whereas Wizards are not. Giving Wizard access to healing- good healing at that, absolutely feels like stepping on toes and I don't enjoy that
Acolyte background wizard gets cure wounds at lv1, which works well with find familiar: anything with flight
It's how I became my party's healer at lv1 in this campaign I'm in
Omg so notice how that's not wizard doing that though that's the acolyte background, the one that's tuned in for cleric or druid, wow
Let me just, sorry one second
What kind of healing spells? Aren't there like another 3 ?
All it gives is magic initiate which any background wizard can get at lv4 too
Omg wow Acolyte 2025 gives you the origin feat Magic Initiate Cleric, and- what's this?? Magic Initiate Cleric gives you.. gasp, healing spells??
I also disagree big with "the one that's tuned for cleric and druid", those two are perhaps the least in need of it
I wonder how that happened, clearly wizards have always been tuned to heal
I mean i dont think a level 1 cure wounds once per day counts "a wizard could always heal" till 2024 rules came out and buffed magic initiate.
You can use spell slots to cast it more so
In need doesn't matter, acolyte is the background that lore wise is meant for worshippers of divine magic, I.E, Cleric, Druid, Paladin,
Wither and Bloom and Life Transference can also heal, Arcane Vigor and Vampiric Touch can also heal, but self only.
you can now, but that is a recent development
Arcane vigor- wither and bloom and life transce all heal too-
wizard healing has always been possible in 5e, yes but its been very limited, mostly to self too
I said Vampiric Touch yeah
But also I'm looking at the 2025 wizard spell list right now, whereas Wizard doesn't get access to Either and Bloom or I believe Life Transference
Those three are the easiest to tie to Acolyte yes. But you could also write your character to suit it just fine. Mechanically it's more useful on others.
Usually THP rather than HP yeah
This is so very true, it's also a complete strawman and has nothing to do with Wizard as a class being able to heal
Oh yeah wizard doesn't get access to the two other healing spells it had in 2025
Aye, any full caster is a decent healer in 2024.
Magic Initiate Cleric yeah
Absolutely not
Both Wither and Bloom and Life Transference are from non-PHB sources that are not Legacy, though they are pre-2024. And they are on the Wizard list, so they remain legit Wizard spells.
If your stubbornness against recognizing backgrounds as a valid gameplay mechanic is the only reason not, then I disagree.
Ahh yes, I hadn't really looked too closely at the newer spells.
2025 wizard spell list does not include either of those spells, 2014 sure but that's an older version of the spell list, mix and match as you like, the only thing I'm stating is that Wizard is not tuned to healing, and I don't think it should be
day 5 of saying building sized cats should be a thing both irl and in dnd
nevermind, its only one time healing lmao
That's not exactly how it works? Those two spells are still legitimately on the Wizard list, they're just not in the PHB list.
Wizard ends up better at healing than any otherwise non-healing full-caster because find familiar's cool for delivering cure wounds
I never said anything against recognizing backgrounds as a valid gameplay mechanic, thank you for another lovely strawman
What I said was that the background has nothing to do with Wizard being a good healer, because Wizard does not give itself Cure Wounds, the Magic Initiate Cleric feat does, which is a seperate thing
okay we agree that wizard healing options are there but limited compared to dedicated support classes. I dont think there is too much movement on that front ?
Absolutely
Wizards are not tuned to healing, and I don't think they should be, I'm just not big on a lot of these newer spells encroaching on the abilities of other classes- especially Martial classes
"non healing full caster" sorcerers right there and is objectively better if we're basing it purely on the addition of Acolyte, purely because of metamagic
I think it comes down to this, while you certainly can play many spellcasters as Gishes, its hardly the strongest you can be. so it comes down how much you value percieved niches
If non-PHB spells from legitimate sources weren't considered to be on a class spell list, Life Transference and Wither and Bloom wouldn't have been on the Wizard list for pre-2024, either. But they were and they are still for post-2024 Wizards, as long as the DM allows those books because they are still current books.
Also notice how you specified non-healing, clarifying that you understand there are healing full caster, like druid, and cleric, because that's a big aspect of what they're tuned to do, and what wizard is not tuned to do
Twinned no longer works with any healing spell you get from background
Nobody said anything about them not being in the spell list because they're from other books, what I said was that the spell list I was referencing was from 2025, which is different from the spell list for 2014
I'm not looking at just the PHB here I have near every book
I am not understanding this. If a sourcebook puts a spell on a class spell list, that spell is on the class spell list, right?
A) where are you getting that from
B) that just makes them equally as tuned healers, which is not at all
And Strixhaven and Xanathar's are still current sourcebooks.
A) 2024 twinned spell only lets you get an additional target on spells that gain an additional target on upcast, essentially a cheaper upcast, but no longer really twins spells
B) wizard has find familiar access, and a crow can deliver cure wounds so you get nearly twice the healing out of the same spell slot if you want to heal at range.
The limit on a familiar delivering a spell with a range of touch is 100ft, whereas distant spell cure wounds gets 30ft with a sorcery point cost
Ok
So one of the big selling points of 2024 5e was that the game is generally back compatible
This does not change that there is still a distinct revised edition of these spell lists
I'm looking at it one of two ways, either, Wizard is getting good healing spells, which I don't like, because that's not what wizard is tuned for
Or, Wizard is getting more healing spells than it already had, which I extra don't like, because that's not what the wizard is tuned for
I like wizards they are cool :3
Ah okay, I forgot cure wounds up cast doesn't pick an extra target that's fair
Okay then yeah find familiar does in fact make wizard slightly better at healing than sorcerer does as long as you also have a background or feat that has nothing to do with the class as is
Notably by your logic this means that wizard and sorcerer are equally as tuned though to being healer because sorcerer can just get magic infinite wizard at level 4
I also like wizards, in concept, but I think they do too much, and I like my other players to have fun
I don't want my monk to deflect attacks and then look over and see the wizard doing the same thing
Only to see the wizard cast Fireball while the monk just deflects attacks again
A divine soul sorcerer with a sage background surpasses both technically
But the sorcerer should just grab ritual caster instead tbf
Or we can just, you know, play Cleric or Druid or Paladin
I don't like clerics
Or people can play whatever they want and have a tiny bit of extra utility from feats/backgrounds. This is also an option, and a healthy one.
They're cool mechanically, i just cannot roleplay a religious character
ive made a sorcerer with warlock background according to my DM lol
my pov is, a 'grief spirit' has triggered the latent magic that my PC has
so to me, its more of symbiosis rather that the more one sided relationship that a warlock pact has
what is the current people think of this?
That's why in this party I am the healer as the wizard
He's got an acolyte background because his clan was involved with the platinum cadre. He knows a few prayers to Bahamut.
Cleric — religious by definition.
A cleric’s power is derived from faith and devotion, typically to a god or divine force.
Paladin — does not have to be religious.
A paladin’s power comes from their oath, not necessarily from worship.
For example, an Oath of the Crown paladin may serve a kingdom, law, or ideal without any connection to a god as a divine figure.
Druid — similar, but different.
Instead of a god, a druid defers to the land itself.
However, this isn’t exactly worship. A druid is more of a preserver than a devotee.
Is this a chatgpt response
yes, and no lol, i asked chatgpt to make my bad text to be more clear :p
cleric def
religious
paladin, doesnt have tobe religious, exmaples it not neeeding related to be agod figure as part of roleplay is oath of crown paladin
druid... fair enouhg. sintead of a god figure, you defer to the land
but thena gain its not so much worhsip and more of a land preserver. you are in awe of nature and its bounties and in your eyes have agreat importane t you but you dont exactly pray to it, you connect to it meditate with it
fix
Use Mage Hand from 55ft away to open doors
druids either worship nature itself or a nature deity like silvanus
the almighty pole!
neither of which i'm interested in making a character for
That's an option too
only paladin i can really play is an oathbreaker which is auto-banned on most tables
Healing Word and Goodberry is all you need
cure wounds is better for wizard as you can do crow ambulance
i kinda wish i could get a second cleric spell for inflict wounds since my wizard is a necromancer
but i'll live tbh, and bahamut's domain is life
the difference of it being a religion is aving mass
other people have made druids and theyre more roleplayed like a hermit more than anything
they dont go
"I believe in nature's power and so civilization should go back to its orgin"
thats wrong lol
ive read someshere that druids ackknowledge civiliation but is basically the bridge between the land of ''man" and land of "beast"
One can also just use a healing potion if they're not even a caster.
alchemist artificer :D
druids have very varying opinions, even jaheira used to think the city must be reclaimed by nature at one point
Artificer is a caster, so, bad example.
ope,
ROGUE!
stealth archer/medic
it's funny to use fireball as an example because it's one of the few spells a monk can cast
but you have to acknowledge
its only cleric thats forces religious roleplay
praising a god, every now and then
a paladin, spouting what he has promised as an oath
a druid, their wisdom on the land
(Even clerics can be devoted to a philosophy/concept, instead of a god if you wish)
to a point, i havent seen a lot of those
Some people don't know that, but most id say probably just do a god for character reasons or default
Also, I think your view of backgrounds-to-classes viewpoint is a bit dismissive. A paladin could be an acolyte or a noble(knight) or even an outlander (maybe an ancients paladin elf protecting a grove alone), it's really not that restrictive
Druid or Pally? Thats not the point, you don't have to play a Cleric, but you should get and lose access depending on the class you pick
If you pick Wizard or Sorcerer I don't think you should be able to encroach into Druid or Cleric territory and Vice Versa
Doesn't have to be religious to be a cleric, it's about devotion, not about religious devotion, you can be devoted to a domain, or an ideal
Whomst
Can old four elements monk cast Fireball
That's crazy
your second statemnt is incorrect I think
the classes are meant to have roles, that their tools dictate them to have
but since wizard has these tools(cure wounds) they can act as they wish
theres divine soul sorcererm, literally giving acess to cleric spell list
i just don't think the druid spell list is very interesting, nor do i care for wild shape. i'm also not that interested in druids in a thematical sense.
issue with paladins is that i'd almost only want to play a conquest or oathbreaker paladin, the latter is frequently banned though so that leaves just one subclass that interests me. i really don't want to abide by the tenets of most paladins. it's just not my style, i'm the necromancer wizard who's rped his way through with horrifying death threats (we saved people this way, it was for a good reason)
The phrasing is that you don't agree with my statement, not that my statement is incorrect, because it's not an objective matter and as such can not be incorrect
at like lv11 but yeah they can
And you DO NOT have to play a Cleric, Druid, or Pally, but you also shouldn't gain access to Cleric, Druid, or Pally style spells while playing a wizard or sorc
thats what i said? "I think your second statement is incorrect"
I cant make a claim yet without a source to back me up because i cant remember a source lol
divine soul sorcerer does give you acess to cleric spell list, i just said
i'm honestly very thankful for the existence of divine soul tbh, it lets me cover the role of a cleric in a party that lacks one without forcing me to play a cleric
it's also got a lot of drawbacks compared to a regular cleric so it's not an upgrade
Divine Soul Sorc.. Spellfire Sorc.... Magic Initiate?
I'm pretty sure DarkDawning meant that your opinion, expressed in "I don't think you should be able to encroach into druid or cleric territory" is incorrect. Opinions can be incorrect

In 2024 especially it’s tremendously easy to get a familiar and druids at level 2 can always cast it using a wild shape
mind you i think 2014 divine soul feels relatively terrible to play compared to aberrant mind
as if one massive really good spell list wasn't decision-paralysing enough, you have two masive spell list and you can, at this level, learn THREE.
Oh! That's fun, Wizard gets it at level 5, and at level 11 Wizard gets access to Soul Cage and Globe of Invulnerability and Disintegrate and Otto's Irresistible Dance and Sunbeam and then the Monk gets to go back to deflect attacks
Wait that’s really old lol
To put it another way: DarkDawningRose was expressing the idea that some characters able to encroach into the territory of other classes is a feature of the game that enhances the game. I think.
Yes, four elements 2014 is well known as one of the worst subclasses of the game.
the monk gets his ki back on short rest at least, but yeah i think 1/3 casters are a silly and unnecessary concept
what i meant was, it does exist, why should it be derided for it being existing.
I know it does, I think it makes more sense on sorc than it does wizard, but I also am still not that big on it though, especially because at least with spellfire or divine soul that's you choosing your subclass, your specialization, Wizard just gets to do that
other caster can do it too
some backgrounds gives you a spell list
divine soul has to miss out on a lot of sorcerer spells because you're using your limited spell learning oppurtunities on cleric ones
Not as limited in 2024.
Opinions can not be incorrect because they're not Objective, they are not facts they are opinions and as such can not be false
my favorite take on divine soul wasn't even in dnd, it was in a bg3 mod that let you pick a cleric spell in addition when leveling up, which was cool
only one cleric cantrip though
There’s already overlap between most of the core classes in dnd - shared spells, similar features, subclasses evoking other classes. Pretty common for classes to have subclasses and feats to be more like other classes. I’m playing an Eberron game soon where my wizard is gonna have a ton of healing spells from a dragon mark. Even putting that aside, feats like magic initiate give access to wider ranges of spells.
And I like that a lot more than the fact Wizard just gets to learn the spells as is regardless of socialization
fair enough
There is a very thin line that overlap stands on before it starts to tread into toe stepping and these new spells feel like too much to me
i like the RAW building tools that we have so my party doesn't have to be screwed over by the clerics somehow just never showing up and then silently leaving the party without attending one session
this one campaign i'm playing a draconic sorcerer but our cleric's MIA so tonight he'll see a god in his dream and a bunch of stuff will happen to make him divine soul
An opinion is not automatically protected from being wrong.
If an opinion is based on false premises, misused definitions, or incorrect facts, then the opinion itself can be incorrect.
ex. EARTH IS FLAT
lol
You're confusing "incorrect" with "false". Those are not the same thing. An incorrect opinion is often understood to be an opinion that, while possessing no truth value, is still based on a false claim, false premises. For an example of a false opinion: "I think it's good to have cyanide in my tea", based on the false fact that cyanide is good for you
i've never seen a cleric make it to the second session
Earth is flat is not an opinion that's what you call a falsehood
Opinions are inherently subjective and as such are in fact immune to being incorrect
And you've played exactly how many games?
four

four campaigns, not four sessions
Basically every cleric I’ve seen has played the full ride of a campaign
ive never seen a monk survive
I've seen a cleric go from lvl 1 to 20
I don't know how our clerics keep disappearing
Incorrect and false mean the same thing they're synonyms, I'm not continuing this conversation with you
It's like they leave the party to seek their god on a pilgrimage each time
A cultist conspiracy….
By being bad players and not showing up.
It's a bad player thing, not a Cleric thing :V. There is a rather distinct difference.
two sides
either palyer fault
or dm not wanting to have a cleric in their game, and so has the mosntrs seem to target the cleric player character
Then tbh it really sounds like d&d 5e isnt the game for you if you have issues with certain classes getting limited access to spells they wouldn't normally have. And to put a class into a stereotypical niche and only want it in that niche is not healthy for game development, imo.
Either way, others have said their piece and so have you, so perhaps let bygones be bygones and move on from trying to convince each other how a ttrpg should and should not be, and just enjoy it in our own ways.
Yep, I'm going to call it for that convo. No need to circle around semantics.
Monsters targeting the cleric is some pretty reasonable gameplay for intelligent creatures
i didn't mean they die, the players just disappear each time, and it's always the cleric that does, for some reason
Actually they don't! Incorrect can indeed be a synonym of false, but it can also be a synonym of "faulty" or "defective" for example. In this cae, DarkDawningRose is calling your opinion faulty, based on a false premise.
Oh, yep, sorry, ending the semantics

Callin' it now- movin on
okie
Moovin on- This was addressed to everyone
Imo it’s pretty reasonable for enemies to target players, and ignore martials in favour of enemies more vulnerable to beatings
why does noone play dnd in minecraft?
There’s usually a host of better, free tools for running games
which is fair
Minecraft doesn't really support the dice and character sheet options, or DMing.
I hope my DM takes my joking prediction and runs with it. I joked that we'd be mugged by sapient pebbles that formed a mafia, if we went down a rocky ravine in the Feywild.
thats a neat idea lol
a DM can make a 3d battlemap
but that has to be a ton of work on the DM
yeaa
There are again, actual VTTs designed for this
Talespire
That support the rules and mechanics.
"The avalanche has already started. It is too late for the pebbles to vote."
u can make some commands to add dice rolling ?
just talking about how it could be used in spite of it not really meant to be used that way :p
You can, but at some point you’re spending more time than needed for not a huge benefit
LMAO,
i need to use that somewhere
D&D isn't just RP, it's specifically the system used. Minecraft can have a few mods added to try and replicate this, but it's not designed for it.
and or chat on discord for sheets and dice and stuff and minecraft for a map
Im discord/avrae dnd player lol
There are VTTs and even other video games (Like Neverwinter Nights) that are designed for it.
avrae is goated
Classes are niches, subclasses are niches, that's how that works, I've been dming for this game for 8 years now we've gotten past the concept of "d&d isn't for you"
I'm not trying to convince others, and we're not getting aggressive, people are allowed to disagree without it needing to be made into a deal and I don't know why so many people seem to miss that
It’s also me personally but I don’t find Minecraft super immersive on its own
Using Minecraft as a VTT would also take just so much time
just add some mods lol
I think I heard of someone doing that actually
fair, was just talking about the possibility
but its not gong to be hecking efficient lol
Also to be clear, this isn't in anyway a disparagement of playing around in Minecraft and making it more D&D to have fun with.
or dnd on roblox
Like making a big modded open world thing in Minecraft to play D&D
For the cost of a copy of Minecraft, I bought a really high quality mapmaking software, and use a fantastic free tool for running combats (Owlbear rep)
mhm lol
There's also that server that's all data packs
Hello everyone
So much lol
if it its just the dicerilling thats fine
but ease of use for dnd sheets and such?
that has to be difficult
But just that there are better platforms to play D&D in, and some platforms would struggle actually being D&D and not just 'D&D themed'.
Yeah, it's normal to want to criticize some decisions made by game devs. Just because I think the game is taking a decision I disagree with does not mean that "D&D isn't the right game".

just use mc as a map and discord avrae for c sheet and dice stuff
My experience is also that players don’t like to sit still when it comes to having an actual vtt to play around in and that’s especially true for Minecraft where I know so many people would be running around jumping when it’s not their turn in combat
oh do u know some?
ive made a sorcerer with warlock background according to my DM lol
my pov is, a 'grief spirit' has triggered the latent magic that my PC has
so to me, its more of symbiosis rather that the more one sided relationship that a warlock pact has
what is the current people think of this?
repost lol, i joined the conversation with this, and so far, no comments
Neverwinter Nights, Roll20, Foundry, Talespire, even Tabletop Simulator.
Owlbear Rodeo is a fantastic free site, and sites like roll20 are great too. If you’re paying, which a copy of Minecraft for every player might require, then yeah foundry and talespire are good options
I've always been partial to Roll20. It's fast, it's simple, it does everything you could want...
im guilty of this, i spin map tokens when the DM isnt looking
I don't think NEverwinter Nights counts as a VTT
It ... does and doesn't?
Hey sometimes you gotta be sideways
just play free minecraft on T launcher
It's the MMO, isn't it?
This is also assuming they don't already have Minecraft. Most of my friend groups just have Minecraft.
Nah, that's Neverwinter, not Neverwinter Nights. There's 4 'Neverwinter' multiplayer games
Same, roll20 is a lot better and easier to deal with than people think.
Dream campaign woukd be talespire though. But that requires a dm Id most likely have to pay heavily.
I mean, given that I’m still having a blast playing the class I think your feedback was pretty lackluster. Foresight gave the fighter a ton of crits, put out a ton of consistent damage, and enabled them to roll more dice. It was great.
NwN AOL, NwN 1, NWN 2 and then Neverwinter the MMO
Too many Neverwinters. Where's my Alwayssummer
its in the south
im not partial to it,
the way its run, the code, my laptop doesnt like it
it feels like there has to more effieciency issues that they need to fix
ive seen campaigns load for like near an hour before everything is finally showing on map
Finally, Australian DnD
Completely on the other side of Toril. Like, straight line from Neverwinter, passing through the core
(And also Philadelphian DnD)
I hope you have hardware acceleration on. Because without it roll20 doesnt have the power to run properly. Most browser vtts dont.
I want to host with Talespire someday but I need a lot of time to learn an entire new (3d) platform.
It's full of Phase Spiders
Uh... OK I admit, with my compture, roll20 always worked perfectly
NwN AOL was a MUD (Multiuser Dungeon)
NWN 1 & 2 were games that you could play single player, much like Baldur's Gate, or you could make a 'Persisant World' which was essentially a westmarch before westmarches.
Someone has made multiple areas and maps, with scripted NPCs, quests, encounters, so on. Multiple players can run around similar to an MMO, but limtied in number.
But DMs could also jump DMside and use the DM tools to manipulate the world and run events.
ive made a sorcerer with warlock background according to my DM lol
my pov is, a 'grief spirit' has triggered the latent magic that my PC has
so to me, its more of symbiosis rather that the more one sided relationship that a warlock pact has
what is the current people think of this?
2nd repost lol, i joined the conversation with this, and so far, no comments
thats terrifying
It's Australia, even the 'cute' animals are disease ridden and soley consume food that gives them braindamage.
If you joined a roleplay server you were expected to stay in character and roleplay, as you adventured around the map with others.
Then events might be run by a DM, like sessions, that you could join in on when available.
So, like westmrch servers, except you actually had a digital 3d map to explore with spawnable monsters, loot and quests.
I wonder if WOTC will ever get it's act together and make a VTT without shooting themselves in the foot and wasting ungodly amounts of money and time.
Dropbears are real monsters….
ye
Is the spirit meant to be an ongoing part of the character through the campaign? Will there be developments there?
supposed to be minor
but uh, ive been gifted with an ability because of how i backstoried my character XD
homebrew
"commune with spirits" its like speak with dead but more dangerous XD
Alright, neat. You'll probably be wanting to split your spotlight time between the spirit and other things. See how it goes.
Good luck with that
I doubt it, there's so many other folks doing it better. Wotc can focus on making books
Ive asked my dm if i can multiclass with warlock. I need more range
Multiclassing wont' really give you more range.
What's your character doing to unlock the secrets of the occult?
Eldritch blast sure as hell will
Oh I misread their post, I somehow read with as As.
As in they were multiclassing out of Warlock.
Ohhhh
No im a paladin wanting to multiclass into warlock
My characters lacking alot in range
How does your character plan to do that?
No idea, we did just die and meet the grim reaper before being sent up to life again
Something to think about then.
ask your dm to help you find a sentient weapon which will be your paladin's hexblade patron, ezpz
Or take Undead Warlock. That's perfectly fitting with having died and come back
And using something simple as a longbow won't work?
What drew you to a paladin in the first place?
whats ur base class?
oh paladin, play until you get to Lvl 8 then multiclass into Warlock
Javelins have some decent Range!
Well i do have a cursed greatsword that has a voice in my head
Barely any damage and limited arrows.
after 2 levels of warlock, pick eldritch blast then agonizing blast and repelling blast
i like devil's sight
Oh eldritch blast will 100% be my first pick
Used it alot in bg3
does anyone else have trouble keeping up cohesion amongst the group when other players play characters that don't fit the setting at all? i don't know if i'm getting unreasonably irritated because another player is spiderman in our ancient greek themed campaign
Are you in a game where you will never enter towns to buy arrows?
Multiclassing is a fine option, but you do lose out on powering up in once class, so if the rest of the team is a mono class you may feel slightly underpowered early on.
If you are using 2014 rules you could grab magic initiate (warlock) at 4th level as a feat and get EB that way.
Not trying to rain on your parade, if Mc was always the plan.. you will enjoy it.
like it's just really hard for me to stay immersed when spiderman is rope slinging over a cyclops. he's not made any effort to be a greek-flavoured spiderman - it's just peter parker.
Are you the dm?
Because that is something that generally is talked about before the game or in session zero and DMs have a right to say "no" to character concepts.
Thing is we are having a pretty short campaign, only about 10 sessions or less so
i'm a player in the game, and while the DM isn't 100% comfortable with the spiderman player, he wants everyone to play what they'd like
like the DM understands my frustrations with the other player, but he doesn't deem it severe enough to mediate things between us
did you have a session zero where you talked about expectations of tone etc
Ah, then have at it.. if you have opportunity to level in that time, may as well try it if it makes you happier. 🙂
briefly yes, and we made our characters during it, we all understood it was set in a fantasy style ancient greece but he was stalwart on wantign to play a spiderman-like character. i was under the assumption he'd just be a greek guy with web slinging, but his only living relatives are called aunt may and uncle ben, and he makes no attempt to interract with the setting appropriately
basically at this point, you have to talk to the group, voice your feelings on the matter and try to find a compromise, or leave
Yeah, that sounds daft to me.
Hi guys
yeah that's the general idea right now. the DM mentioned to talk to the player privately so i'm gonna do that, and if we can't find common grounds then i'm going to consider finding a new group
Ive not even played DnD yet but this would annoy me personally, would take me right out if the immersion side of playing
i was just wondering if i'm being unreasonable having issue with someone else's character choices with that context
yeah that's essentially my issue with it haha. it's hard to take anything seriously when spiderman is tagging along
Nah, it's a shared experience and one player is banging a cowbell while the rest are on violins.
There's enough Greek lore they could probably have a spiderman esque vibe going without having to go full Peter Parker. Im sure theres a man spider monster in Greek lore somewhere if we looked hard enough 😅
that's kinda what i assumed he'd be playing lol but no it's literally just peter parker
but yeah, thank you all for the advice. i'll have a chat with both the DM and the player about it and go from there
like, the kind of game where one person is literally peter parker is a very silly kind of game, where everyone is doing memes or something. this kind of tone should be part of the sales pitch
my thoughts too. i wouldn't have joined with the same expectations if it was gonna be a comedy campaign
There's definitely a place for that kinda game (i imagine) but it should be discussed with the whole group. If someone basically wanted to play a Marvel campaign, thats fine but only if everyone else is into it
i have VERY strong opinions on marvel which is probably half my reasoning for being so disrupted by it lol
Thats fair 😅
Do you know what class they are even supposed to be?
One of the reasons we usually discourage People from trying to make "exactly spiderman" in a game like d&d is because their powers are so vast and varied and d&d doesn't have the mechanics to cover every iteration of every power. Also when you stick an outside superhero in d&d with all their powers (regardless of having a d&d mechanic behind it) they tend to be overpowered vs other characters. Which makes the game unbalanced.
They probably used that 3rd party arachnoid stalker subclass from valdas
they're just a rogue with a grappling hook
Quite literally Spider-Man for rogues
(There’s also some challenges with playing an established character in a ttrpg, which is that a lot of the reasons we love those characters is because they’re so great in a those stories, but taken out of context they can lose a lot of shine)
it's not like unfair homebrew or anything, it just really takes me out of the immersion that Peter Parker is in ancient greece
I could maybe see Frodo or a character like that working in dnd
oh my god??? 😭
I agree. I think inspiration works great as a starting point, not a destination
i have mixed feelings towards anyone playing parody characters unless they have a good reason and it makes sense. if we were playing a modern game with superheroes i would not care, but it's ancient greece. the rest of us are greek, he is spiderman
it’s seems kind of lazy imo
he's a first time player so the DM just wants him to like feel comfortable with his first time
that makes sense
This is really it for me. It’s willfully disengaging with everyone else’s fantasy in order to fulfill something that just isn’t this campaign
100% agree
the first time I played dnd I made a generic half elf ranger lol. but that actually fit the campaign
Nothing bothers me more than players who don’t engage with the game in the same way as the rest of the group (cynical reserved edgy rogues I’m looking at you)
Yall we should do a virtual dnd game
I definitely think that someone should gently explain this to him because being able to work with the group and rhe setting is crucial to dnd
i texted him and asked if there was a possibility he could play a different/reflavoured character because i find it incredibly difficult to focus for the reasons i've already posted here
it's his choice though, i'm resigned to finding a new campaign if he doesn't change
or the person who thinks “chaotic neutral” means “murderhobo”
Is this a game you’re a player in or DMing?
I presume player?
playing, but the DM told me to settle it privately as i'm the only person who seems to have a large issue with the player
Would changing his name to Petros help with your immersion? Its Greek, but still means Peter for him.
You could pitch it like a multiverse thing. Its a version of Peter, back in time in this new universe with Greek elements. While his power vibe might be the same his origins would be different.
This to me I don’t think is a red flag or anything but does strike me as a sign that you and the group have different expectations
Might be easier to offer an olive branch of compromise than just say "I dont like the modern character you picked and you need to change it"
Petrou is more of a surname isn't it
i still think i'd have trouble seeing it as anything but spiderman. If he was Petros, and the only thing that made him similar to spiderman WAS the flavouring of the grapple hook, i wouldn't care. even his actions in-character are just what marvel's spiderman would do
if there was an attempt made to be anything but marvel's spiderman i would probably be fine with it
It can be either..it is the Greek origin of Peter so you can easily use it
Fun fact: It means stone.
That is why I suggested pitching it like a multiverse.
If they are new to dnd and hesitant, it might be daunting to try something completely unfamiliar.
But letting them retain elements of it, changing the supporting details to fit into ancient Greece could work.
As a compromise, you would have to make effort too, you know.
You have it hellbent in your head but if they are willing to compromise with some changes, you should try and be more flexible/forgiving.
yeah that's fair enough, i just struggle with the idea that he'd still be of the mind that he is playing spiderman, and he'd treat his character that way
i'm willing to put the effort in if he does, so if a compromise does arise i'm willing to take it
but as is it just feels like it's me or him as i'm not comfortable with someone disrupting the setting of the game as such
which is fine, like, i'm willing to leave if it means he gets to keep enjoying the game
Is he playing it like he's modern day Peter Parker who has been mysteriously transported to Theros?
he has no backstory or reason as to why he's there. he's just marvel's peter parker in ancient greece
Like Peter Parker who knows what a camera and a phone is, but doesn't know the Theros gods?
yeah pretty much
I think isle, if it’s a thing where it’s disrupting your fun, and the group has enjoyed the game and doesn’t mind their character, then it might just be a sign more than anything that yall have different things yall want out of your campaigns, which is fine
No, but I mean, exactly. Like did he come straight out of the Marvel universe with modern 21st century knowledge?
yes and no? yes in the sense that that's how the player is playing the character, but no in the sense that there's no actual reason for the character to know that. there's no backstory detailing that he was transported across the multiverse et cetera, the player is just playing as 20th century peter parker
Heyy wassup
If it's just in personality, but he doesn't explicitly mention phones and the internet, I think there's a shade of possibility to save it.
yeah i do agree, i think the best course of action honestly is either to just find a new game for me. it's just disappointing as the theme of the campaign was set, and it's the spiderman player who is going against it
Can I join any of your dungeons and dragons club, I'm New in ts
#find-a-game is pretty good for online games here
Alr
Inspiration from well known characters seems fair, I read an article about a guy trying to kick-start a kpop demon hunters inspired dnd game for kids to get started. But I dont think it would be the actual characters, but very drawn from that idea which is cool
Hello 👋
the player's knowledge of 20th century stuff is kind of accidentally bleeding into the campaign. he does things for comedy that a character BCE wouldn't even really consider like inventing french fries and whatnot
but it's not like he does it on purpose or anything, he just doesn't take the game seriously enough to consider that his comedy stuff wouldn't fit
my general takeaway from this is to have a talk with the player/dm, and find a new game if no compromise can be reached
i don't wanna ruin someone's first experience when i could easily find or start a new game
Did you know at level 4 a Human Warlock can have proficiency in every skills?
In 2024
you would HAVE to name him Jack
Wait I’m wrong. Not level 4. I forgot Lessons of the First Ones don’t let you spam the Skilled feat.
You’d only get 16 skills then
Wait no 17 because Human starts with one
still impressively high lol
Basically by level 4 you can get 17 out of 18 skills in the game
only question is what skill are you not picking?
Persuasion
Because i would be amused if it ended not being a charisma skill somehow for a warlock.
Could even make it a bit that it’s a warlock who makes bad deals but their patron pities them
human rogue 1/warlock 2 gets 16 skills too
what would be the best setup to get as many languages possible?
Bards getting skill prof in all so they can obsolete their jack of all trades and become king of all trades
Linguist feat from the 2014 PHB.
Ranger and Rogue…. And a lot of Downtime and some gold
Use the Downtime rules from Xanathar's Guide to Everything to learn every language prof with money.
Ranger if you use the optional features gets like 2 or 3 extra languages, pick up firbolg for three languages, pick up linguist to top it off
In 2024 Ranger gets 2 languages and rogue gets 1 I think
Thats like 6 with no investment plus one from a background for pretty much any language you could want
my horizon walker knows 5 including common which i assume is pretty high unless you're specifically going for every language
Yep! Ranger (in terms of class) gets the most languages
Of course there are spells to translate them too
Part of how Ranger is the “Adventurer” class I’m guessing
yeah, but having someone that already talk the things help a lot
Dont waste a spell, dont make problems if they dont like magic or think you are doing some not good magic.
Interaction with them would be easier
Also writing it too
yep, and understand them inside of some infiltration
i've never really encountered a DM who uses any language but common anywhere but some ancient tome lol
that go from DM to DM
the kingdoms in my campaign all speak separate languages as well as common (like how wales has signs for cymraeg and english) but i've hardly met another DM who cares for language
I actively uses it as often as I can
not that it's a complaint lol, just a part of the character sheet that rarely is used
Like a goblin will know Common but would rather use their native tongue in their camp for example.
some can make a race//kind//group use X languages either forcing the party to translate, get spell that translate or somethign else
yeah overhearing others talk can often be in other languages than common
What if I fall in love with my buddy who’s playing the love interest of my character
Then put a ring on his finger? Bro love 😄
Its the meet cute we all wanna see 😅
offer food and say you want to offer it food for the rest of your life
Coming next year for valentines day
try to keep those feelings off-table, and talk to them about it in private if you're actually serious (and you think they would reciprocate)?
i've heard a lot of horror stories about games becoming weird because players or DMs can't handle their romantic feelings for each other and it spills into the game
Also work out if youre actually in love with them above table and not just the character 😅
lol yeah
yeah, there is a reason why rarely there is "romance" in the table
Either that or either because 2 to 4 persons having to heard how 2 are roleplaying a whole romance.... feel uncomfortable.
Unless is made correctly and is those kinda comedic//romantic ones
Tbf and again I havent avrually played a game yet but I dont think id want s romance for my character
Her whole shtick if someone hit on her would be "eww go away" 🤣
hey hows everyone
Eepy
Besides that fine. Looking into a Barovia Oneshot.
Naturally I'm thinking about how to include Strahd. If at all.
You know, I've wondered why the fact that some people call Strahd an incel bothers me.
Like, it's not untrue. He is defined by violence perpetrated against women, by desire to control them.
He is absolutely a misogynist.
So I thought about it and realized: It's because incels are usually represented as powerless. They're middle class, they're not successful career-wise... At least stereotypically. They're a "safe" form of misogyny, you know?
Strahd is something else, more common. He is in power, successful, handsome, polite, with etiquette, and well-groomed. And that changes nothing, he still thinks he is entitled to women's affections, and he is still willing to brutalize them if they refuse him. Incels are not portrayed as powerful, polite, successful and handsome. Strahd feels much worse because of that. And also much more common
sad
I like calling strahd an incel because it’s funny for the same reason calling him a bloodsucking nerd is funny. I like your analysis a lot though.
The fact that he is handsome and powerful but is still such a misogynist makes him scary in a very human way
Lots of players looking for games in #looking-for-dm
Though it should be for a d&d game
Strahd is more like a serial killer than an incel, hes got bodies stacked
He has a high body count
that implies that being handsome or powerful makes you less likely to be a misogynist ?
probably not what you meant
but still, we should be careful to not assign goodness to good looks
I mean that the stereotypical misogynist is not handsome or powerful, because people have a tendency to assume that bad person = ugly
But yeah, I should’ve clarified that
Idk, If I think of misogynists, powerful men are really high on list
I agree, but like, the stereotypical “bigot” is someone who is easy to make fun of generally
kinda same for handsome to some extend, at least stereotypes regarding "jocks"
Yeah it is complicated: this is kind of getting into non-dnd territory though
fair
