I did and its not showing up
Did you buy it as a gift? Check your purchases under your account
If you bought it as a gift it would need to be redeemed
Knowing how to curate encounters
I did not buy as a gift its not showing up in my gift inventory
What are some tools you recommend to new DMs?
I am currently utilizing a flowchart for story progression, Inkarnate as a mapmaker, and DndBeyond as a sheet manager
Controlling talking over the table limits would be a good challenge. If you have players that haven't respected your table yet
Check https://www.dndbeyond.com/account/licenses - is your purchase showing up there?
Thats where I checked, and no its not.
If it's not there then it sounds like the purchase did not actually complete.
You may need to reach out to Customer Support to see what might be happening
Its showing up in my order history and i got the receipt in my email
Damn alright, was just checking here to make sure I wasnt just being impatient lol
Okay time to contact customer support because everything says you should have it but the fact it's not showing up under licenses is weird and the fact that you don't see the book in your purchases is just... weird.
?tag ddb support
D&D Beyond customer support can be contacted at the link below. Requests are answered in the order they're received, during regular business hours. Submitting multiple requests for the same issue can result in a delayed response.
http://dndbeyond.link/SubmitTicket
alrighty, unfortunate but yeah. Just wanted to come here first to confirm before bothering them just for it to show up a few minutes later.
Make sure you have a receipt like in your email
They do
Yeah I hvae the order confirmed thing with all my details n stuff
oop just as im about to make the ticket I checked and it was there, I guess I was just being impatient lol
it happens to all of us... i'm 4.5% sure.
well at least i wont have to panic now.... when buying stuff on D&D beyond anymore...
Whew! Usually it doesn't take long for the purchase to show up - 30+ minutes is a bit longer than expected but glad everything worked out!
Yup, almost an hour haha. glad I didnt have to worry about making a ticket.
Out of curiosity
What would you recommend for possibly resurrecting a person that doesn't require knowing a spell?
Ask Jergal nicely
Paying someone to do it for you, some church//kingdom//palace must have someone that do it for you for some price//quest
Players arent something that others creatures in the world cant be
There can be some wizard or church that can do it, warlock.... welp that too but might involve some dark forces
i perfer churches... its much more natural x'D
Asking because of the following things
- Ranger died at level 5
- DM had a debuff for my character. Wouldn't tell what because it could allegedly have future impact on the game (it was consensual in exchange for a reroll on terrible stats)
- The party did have Revivify, but no diamonds to cast it
- Considering it's CoS, idk if my options are super limited
i think there was a spell//cantrip that preserve the body really well so you can use revivify without problem
Now if its missing some limb or had any disease numbers get... problematic
Gentle Repose. And no one was nearby to cast it in time anyways
Have you discussed things with the DM about how you'd like to bring back the ranger character and and collaborated on ways that that could be done?
Cast ray of frost to cryogenically preserve a body
I mean it's something that in many groups can get hashed out in discussions after the game about "ways to bring back dead character".
For now, the past couple days were me grieving a bit (bad headspace and rough times irl) and making a substitute character
Couldn't you just make another level 5 Ranger but with a different name
that is one way.... but it defeats the purpose of character development.
Ranger Jr.
A good out of game conversation can help in game magic happen that helps everyone, DM included, have an awesome and engaging game.
Many DMs love when players come forward with ideas for plot hooks. It’s less work for the DM to make one themselves!
Like we had a beloved character die in a game session and our characters did a bunch of work for a local temple of a diety and managed to get them resurected. But we all had to sacrifice something as a character to get it done.
It was really impactful - and it led to amazing roleplay and new adventure hooks and story development.
And get shafted by bad luck again by being somewhat resembling of my Ranger? Probably not
Besides, this does also give me a chance to experiment with Barbarian
There was out of game discussions about it though to help lay the groundwork and set expectations
So why go through hurdles to revive the Ranger
What did you sacrifice?
I offered up a magical item
I never said i didn't want to play Ranger. It was more a playful remark about luck
Barb Ranger multiclass, ez
I think the magic item, if I recall (it was a long time ago) guaranteed a minimum roll of a 10 on a D20 test once per day.
Ideally, it can be the former until I can revive Ranger. Then he could possibly become a NPC afterwards or only pop in when crap hits the fan again
I'm not that much of a crazy guy
Wouldn't make sense thematically, either
I used to think it was crazy too until Eau in optimization made a convincing case
I save the funny characters for one shots
That's the one time where joke characters are the best
john adventure meets mercy overwatch to kill the dragon
so the D&D beyond is doing maitnece on 1/20/26
Yes
help my brain short circuited "what the hell is the 20th month"
i figured, why the month first, what is this savagery XD
Got my Monday game restarted
See #dnd-announcements message for more information (and the time based on your local timezone)
My stutter was awful and I rambled a lot unnecessarily
But did everyone have fun?
my deepest apologies but it says on my laptop down on the right hand side...
But gonna take the week to figure out how to get their characters introduced and find a new 5th
I think so.
Caught the new people up on what the remaining party was up to
i just need to know, who even thought about putting the middle length period of time first and then the short one followed by long? Why??
Which was get strong and famous in order to get access to a locked away part of a library in order to find a way to get to the underworld.
Which is a long term goal which leaves it nice and open for the new PCs to come in
Hey guys I had a cool idea for a d&d session if anyone has ever played magic the gathering there are spells and classes so I was thinking of a starting class and one starting color then as you level up you get more mana slots to cast magic spells and later can add extra colors to expand the vast number of spells to choose from. I dont know someone give me there thoughts about the idea I would love feedback
welp, there is many deckbuilding games out there, one you could help yourself to base this is Slay the Spire
shrugs i did play magic the gathering.... I had a thorn elemental... well back in it's days... gave my deck to my cousin after several years.... and then i now know that deck is now more than what it's worth.
And you could do like that game do with his characters.
Each one have his mimmick, ways to play it and more, there are items, there are stadistics, now you would see how to adapt all that into a DND class
I would start by using class in mtg because they are both the same for the most part just it can be more detailed and depends on the class but you could get spells that work well like if your a cleric then siphon spells could work or if your a warrior then increasing states for a short period of time could work
I just thought it would be a cool homebrew d&d idea
it is...
its 2026, there must be one already made
that also could be true... a possability.
Maybe but I never heard of one
Idk. Redesigning the magic system kind of has a ripple effect on a LOT of other assumptions of the game rules
That would definitely be a hell of a project to take on
Ik but think about it having spells like cyclonic rift turn in to a either cheep i launch your goblin in to the wall or a mass shockwave effect
Or having a life gain spell heal you or your party members
Not something I personally would try. Fun idea in concept. But so hard to pull off. Especially while maintaining a semblance of balance
I just thought it would be a more player picks a spell they want and I the dm would check if that spell is balanced or fair/possible in the campaign
Idk. As a player I’d want consistency and dependability. And I wouldn’t want the balance of my spells to be decided so arbitrarily
I just foresee the challenge being too great for me to want to interact with something like that. As a DM or as a player
you get more powerful as the game progreses and so do the enemys
Eh. Not something I would find enjoyable. But still really creative idea
Didn’t mean to reply directly. My b
But I want that to be codified and not up to when my GM says I can use that spell.
Not knocking the idea. It’s just not for me
welp, right now im kinda imagining it tho
but its... problematic for a system like DnD add such idea
Path of the Beast Barb's natural weapons not also being unarmed strikes makes me so mad
i wanna run it as a multiclass with lycan bloodhunter but it doesn't work RAW
Yeah. There’s gotta be a better system for it. I enjoy 5e. But I don’t think it’s built to be shaped and changed quite so much
How do y'all deal with people who overgeneralize things or group lots of different things under 1 condescending umbrella term?
Cut them out of my circle, usually
ironic that this question can only have overgeneralized answers due to lack of context
Because this is a good friend of mine, and he is taking a shot at DMing, and stated he doesn't like "Power Players" but his examples are that of normal characters with specific strengths
Yea i feel like some people want you to play a commoner and not a class/subclass that actually feels good to play
Oh. Then I’d let him know I wasn’t. And show him counter examples of what power gaming actually is
My Monk for example, I specialize in grappling, built him around it, so he kind of falters in the other departments, specifically MAD, and he said that was Power Playing
I’d also suggest other systems that aren’t designed as heroic power fantasy
Power gaming to me is the actual just default kills that ruin encounter design
Tried, he shut it down before I got to reply
like bag of holding bombing
We are, trying to do Warhammer, and btw, I know nothing of it, but that wasnt really necessary for this specific topic
Warhammer depending on what system can be very much you're the victim
Any "power" is just maybe surviving.
I anyways gave him a brief overview of the different "power gaming" things: Meta Gaming, Optimizing, Min-maxing, and building a strong character
Oof. Thats rough. What i would do is this then. Offer to run something yourself. On a different day. Without the no power gaming (even though it’s not). I have a feeling i know which one of those tables will be more fun
40k
There's a few 40k systems but yeah idk what to say about them
5e expects you to be good at something.
Yeah. I kind of assumed we were talking 5e as well
And being good at something = power gaming isn't gonna be a good mindset to keep
Ok hear me out
Pact of the old one warlock
Whose patron was his imaginary childhood friend
Eh eh
Child sees visions of strange figure and everyone assumes it’s an imaginary friend only for in adulthood for the entity to become the individuals patron
Ok. That’s pretty cool
I like it
unironically I had this idea for the vestige warlock that came out in the UA recently
Hi everyone! (Sorry didn’t know we couldn’t use gifs lol)
Thanks for feeding the dragon
It’s a great idea
And it’s a fun reversal of the evil patron trope
Evil? Nah this is Norbert he’s my best friend and together we shall usher in an age of WRITHING MADNESS
Gosh. He’s been saying that about the writhing for years, when will Faerun discovery therapy?
My spin on it was he was a crazy "wizard" who talks to a rock with Ersatz eyes glued onto it
mine was admittedly pretty goofy
I’m not crazy dad I literally have a tentacle arm and can cast magic
he’s real
That arm thing is just a phase!
Whats with warlocks and eldritch blast being their main thing they use? also with force damage in 2024 rules does stuff get knocked back?
you need an extra evocation to push back
it's because they don't have many spell slots 🥲
ahhh okay i see,
thank you for this
with 2024 rules you could easily pick any other spammable damage cantrip but EB is still going to be your best bet
its super reliable
And when you level up it turn into a magic missile with real damage
It's Eldritch Blast, it's worth at least one soul
Chat should I put my players through the bridge of death (Month Python)
Eldritch blast as a cantrip is super versatile, has great damage, scales really well, and the damage type is super powerful.
Nothing knocks a target back without an effect saying so. Which is what Repelling Blast invocation is for and thats in both 2014 and 2024
Is there a way to keep a Remorhaze cold consistently in dnd? I’m playing a monster tamer that wants one
(Dm said that they need to be in a cold climate to regulate their burning temperatures)
Cold elementals trapped in a confined environment, creating something like a refridgerator.
Alrighty! Thank you!
Give then sunglasses so they can stay cool
Roll charisma check to convince your DM to let it work
Yes but instead of instant death make them loose 10% of their hp
And a bunch of force, ofc.
ello
Send them flying back 100ft or smthng
@wanton sorrel hi!
hello!
helloo
ok so i tried to play a roleplay game with my gf and her siblings
so i wanna try DND (they didnt do it cos nobody wants to be DM so i guess ima be a DM)
i have a general idea on what to do tho
can any1 review my character? its a premade one with a few tweaks (idk what im doing honesly)
but i have 0 idea on the basics, i only know stuff from the youtube
my idea is use a game as a way to get inspirations and make a world map thing
have yall heard of dwarf fortress? ima use that as world gen
theres human, elf, dwarf, kobold, goblin and other various creatures
no half breeds but there are animal persons and bunch of curses and necromancy as well
so im thinking maybe ima use that as story inspiration
i have made a large world, 500 years of history
using other programs i can export the world history into XML file (which can be read via other program and read through like encyclopedia)
every session i can export it and see what happens
for players i wont tell much
also theres fog of war in adventure mode so they wont know much
You might want to check out #character-discussion
i wanna send the world map and basic history here but idk
the xml file is HUGE (2GB) so i cant send it here probably also its probably really annoying to read it
wait is this a homebrew?
whats homebrew
your own story
ye i guess
ah makes sense. Looks good
cos i dont know much about official canon story
also this game (dwarf fortress) is very detailed so i could just let them act and i input their actions in the game and let how it plays out
the skills affect the combat ability and theres also slight randomness in it
also theres bleeding and "syndromes" (basically everything from poison effects to lycantrophy and curses)
and necromancers can revive players back
should i go to #dm-discussion
there is a difference between raising the dead and ressurection
yeah some get turned into undead husks
which is mindless
some get turned into sentient undead
sentient undead doesnt feel emotions but does recognize friendship iirc
yeah you might want to go to DM discussion but you did say world building too... would that be dm world building???? character-discusion was also mention would that mean they go there???
mhm ok
i kinda wanna get image perms lemme see if its behind a level or something
#1133105399256584323 message ok i re-read it and i understand
i must make a save action roll 1d20 to live from confusion
BWAHAHAHAH my Find Familiar in a game did 3443 damage on a Purple Worm xDD
How
Context, our party came across a Purple Worm, a Gargauntuan sized creature, and a spellcaster casted Polymorph on it into a snail, then my familiar, a flying monkey took it 10800 feet in the air and dropped it
DM houseruled removed terminal velocity from this world/there's no fall damage limit in session 0 months ago
rolling 1080d6
There's now a one punch man sized crater on the map xDD
every city within 100 miles looked in the sky to see a purple comet fly slowly grow bigger and bigger
1080d6?
wow with this information i think any yugioh card can be the main boss of D&D and then use polymorph and do some serious dps
if they fell 1080ft it'd only be 108d6
oop it was 10,800
I believe, it was 30 feet fly speed, dash every round for 30 minutes into the sky
why not send them to space so they can't breathe?
Yeah a full hour would get you about that high
we messed around deliberating and polymorph was going to run out
ah makes sense i guess.
I thought it was 20d6
You would need some way to survive above 20,000 feet, much less the void of space. But it's a strongly homebrewed campaign so who knows?
they mentioned their DM ignored that rule
Yup yup, mb, just read that
Itd only be 20d6
Fall damage caps at that
they mentioned their DM ignored that rule
They house overruled it
Oh, I see now that I read
yes tokii
0_0
curse ti for keeping us apart...
lol x'D
Eventually we’ll just start our own game
oh god, speaking of games, i need to get more people for the oneshot on friday
How many do we have? 3?
Um question what would the fel magic from wow be classified as in d&d??
what?
in the most general sense, it would be warlock magic, specifically from an infernal patron
but there are many key differences
Boo
Is going mono barb until level 11 going to be a huge problem?
Or is it possible to make work
hello everyone, I hope you all are having a great day
Monoclassing will always work
Monoclassing is usually better than multiclassing. Multiclassing pretty much objectively makes your character worse unless you know the specific build you're making and playing the meta.
Like if you don't have a build in mind that exploits a feature a different class level give you. Then your multiclass is just giving you a weak low level ability and cheating you out of a stronger high level one
Classes are typically enough to work with their own features so.. nah lol
I'm multi classing my wizard so I feel that but I went into claric for spooky necromancy death claric
Also I got a ton of spells for doing so 😄
My ac hits 23 with shield of faith and shield spell reaction
Hiiii! I have had a pretty good day hbu?
Also based pfp mwahahahah
lol thank you, my best friend has the other pfp side. Also my day has been good. I’m finally able to chat here now that my phone number is working
Oh yayyyy!!
Welcome to the Internet.
Well, you know me: stringing along the coast and keeping sparse. People value the things they don't have in abundance more.
Have a look around?
Elite ball knowledge omg
lol
Hallo!!
Teehee, I had to do it
Fair XD
I may be getting art of my Harengon Bladesinger soon 🧐
Oh sick
Aye, if you wanna know what his fit looks like...
It's literally Robin from fire emblems lmao
I haven’t played it but I’ve heard of it lol
They're a Wizard that uses a sword...
Just like my Harengon 💀
Gotcha XD
Aye, he's dressed in a fit like that because it keeps long robes from getting in his way
He doesn't wear a hat either simply because his ears are too big
Fair lmao.
I still have to wait a month for my Bladesinger's art. Ought to share when yours is done; I love Bladesinger.
It's a nerd with a sword, what could possibly go wrong?
Harengon is a very fun species combination with Bladesinger too 👀
All the features compliment it so well
Art is a lot of work I hope it turns out great
Bonus to Initiative and Dexterity Saves
Bonus action disengage the moves you pretty far without using movement
And
Perception is always a nice free skill to have lol
I'd say my favorite is Fairy Bladesinger. The infinite flight is neat, since you don't wear armor and thus meet the "can't wear Medium or Heavy" expectations. Hard to hit, hard to touch.
My players are poor so they can't afford character art
I feel like every other table I know just has either crude sketches, default pics, or uses AI.
Stick people are also acceptable
Hi guys, i heard in this server you can gain Inspiration by seducing a dragon
Seduce the bard. You'll also get inspiration.
Seduce the crawling hands
Seduce the Dungeon master
Roll to Seduce.
1
Seducing is overrated
It's a very "hard" roll
7 days.
Beshaba's black bones...7 days!?!
...
6 days.
69 days
If I use animate dead on fish can I have them finally walk on land and be good Bois?
Alas, they cannot walk to begin with.
Who said anything about them having leg they got fins
both zombies and skeletons can walk on land which animate dead creates so, yeah
Sweet
Actually
Sorry, no, you can only use animate dead on the corpses of humanoids - fish would generally be beasts
Darn
so it doesn't work unfortunately
I guess I will wait on the wish spell to give all fish the ability to walk on land and breath oxygen
if i use talk to death and speak with animals can i speak with the dead fish?
The street sharks must happen
Realistically most DMs would probably allow it yeah
I would ask the fish what it's favorite color is
Has there been any announcements for what books will be coming out this year?
Dont make the world have to fight them please, i dont want to turn every fish that try to eat me into sushi
I would make them like the news anchor fish in Spongebob they would be gentlemen fish
Why seduce when you can make friends with the dragon?
I already have some plot that i want to add to my Fighter champion about fighting a dolphin. So....
If the dragon die and you are married to it, you get the inheritance. Think about it
And hey, dragon wife//husband is something to brag about
If a dragon and a donkey can fall in love
Welp, time to make a new generation of Dragonborns.
Im asking the wizard to get me some invulnerability scrolls and other stuff
i js watched a video talking about playing dnd in hytale and damn it sounds so good
only part im worried about is avatars and hytale being paid but other than that it looks amazing
What's hytale?
am i able to send yt links here or
No
mind if i send it in dms zoethar
Its a game that in the past was said it was a "minecraft killer", was delayed, delayed and then drop and it seems it was retaken by someone
prolly could explain better than me
ITS A GREAT GAME AND ITS AN ACTION RPG sorry caps
In any way, you can use tons of apps or stuff for "port" dnd sessions tho
^
Oh a Minecraft thingy, not really a Minecraft person anymore since they ruined my favorite biome with mechanics
Hytale is basically a MC clone to put it extremely roughly
Guess links work
I never tried posting links here. Before
i wont try, i like having my hands attached to my body
Its only gifs that were shut down
Good too know
But yeah, you can literally pick up lots of games, mod them and use them for dnd sessions
i dont like getting banned, just that
watch the video it explains why hytale is especially good
how its called? i will search it by myself to be fully safe
" Why Hytale is the Future of D&D" by Slugtalk
Ehhhh not a fan of the character art style to childish for my tastes not saying it's a bad game just not for me
fair enough but like everything else is amazing
*or will be with mods, the minecraft modding community is rather large
It only just escaped development hell, wouldn't put super high hopes on it lasting the entire way without being obscure
loads of massive minecraft youtubers are playing it i dont think its gonna be obscure anytime soon
dantdm alone has brought a lot of attention to it
New stuff is always worth a try, the question is whether it would last
I have to pick out what I'm planning to play each month I only have PC access half a month
So far it feels like a good chunk of the appeal is from nostalgia + microsoft hate
And while it probably can be modded to do dnd stuff with, MC could too and a dnd mod never really kicked off either (if it even exists)
I still need to stop restarting balders Gate 3 and pick something
But I kinda want to play the first 2 first
PEAK MENTIONED?
I also have all the old games on steam like gold box classics
Random social experiment: Talk and assume bg3 mechanics when everyone's talking about dnd here
How do I find a campaign??
You look for single DMs in your area
???
Exactly what he said
Wild
you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. There’s also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
They have to be hot too
And local
You can be hot too!
Fire resistance is a handy thing to have
I prefer cold so I can break the ice
If you do have game stores in your area thou it's a good place to meet people that want to run games
Or you can learn to DM like I did and run what you want when you want unless the evil BBEG schedule Monster ruins it
So... no updates or announcements yet?
Hey I am working on some fantasy races for a campaign setting and I wanted to ask you guys what you thought
For sure! If this channel is quiet, feel free to drop it. But sometimes it can get busy so #homebrew can be better.
Took my shot ^_^
yes but it has the baldurs gate mod plus its not corpo slop plus its artstyle can match the aesthetic of dnd plus easy to make mods and easy to make maps and also modding is really accesible and also hytale isnt nothing like minecraft theyre both block games but theyre fundamentally different genres
Whats everyone's favorite type of monster
Cookie
Dave
clockwork amulet my beloved
Elemental Cataclysm
i'm a simple person, i like skeletons
Theyre spooky, they're scary, and they send shivers down your spine
You can always make them stronger.
Also, now I know 2 more NPCs I'm adding to my campaign. 2 siblings who are wights that passed away trying to fly.
The Wight brothers
Is there any way to cast the spells granted from the Tiefling race with a focus in 5e 2024?
Ah Dw I already have.
Haven’t gone back to the regular wight stat block in ages
Same way you cast any other spell? I think I’m misunderstanding
Why do you ask?
Do you mean “without”?
I wanna use the Tiefling spells on a Monk, but as far as I'm aware the only way to cast magic with a focus is if your class allows you to
Everyone can use a component pouch.
Oh okay thank you
I'm building my first character and figuring out how to utilize magic is a lot
Which tiefling are you?
Infernal
It's a good tactic, though tricky to use without interfering with your allies.
I suggest casting it on a small, enclosable object like a stone inside a locket. A coin held between the teeth will do, in a pinch. Close your lips and the darkness goes away, smile … and the Darkness leaks out to cover you.
Ive been thinking of taking a level of rogue with my trickery domain cleric along with mobile feet so i can do hit and run sneak attacks, do yall this can be useful? We are at level 3 right now so im still unsure
I’m not all too familiar with trickery domain, but remember that it’d slow down your spell progression
A little rule I have with myself is no multiclassing until level 5
Way of the Astral self can be found if you get Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, iirc
Not, a great multiclass, imo.
Correct. Your spell progression and your sneak attack will oppose each other and slow down each other’s scaling
Ah yes getting 3rd level spells should be my main priority as of now
Whenever you level rogue, you lose out on cleric spell slots, and whenever you level cleric, you lose out on sneak attack scaling
Granted, weapon prof (if you don’t already have it), weapon mastery, expertise and sneak attack ain’t that bad. Just usually not worth it
But also tbf, rogue won’t get you much weapon proficiencies
I was trynna look for some builds online but couldnt find anything that could buff my playstyle significantly so im just brainstorming as of now on how i should go on about building my character, probably will just go all in cleric
More spells never hurt nobody but the enemy
I dont wanna build a main dps, just staying in the mid line supporting my mates while cc/debuffing the enemies
Yeah, sounds like cleric activities
2 levels gives you cunning action, which isn’t the worst, but two levels would’ve gotten you another spell level
Great point, that is quite a dent
You have to be careful when multiclassing, you don't want to make a... "clerical" error... 😎
Stay Cleric, that's what they do well.
I recently got an item that lets me channel divinity twice so if my clone gets destroyed i can always resummon it, love staying at a safe distance while still being part of the battle
Alrighty thank you!
Oh that’s cool! Does it stack with the extra channel divinity uses you get at later levels?
reminds me of amulet of the devout (bg3)
Yep! It gives me a +1 channel divinity use and +1 to my spell difficulty class
Thats actually what its called xD
Gotta love anything that increase spell save DC
Any time a BG3 item is brought into regular dnd I jump with joy
bump it up to +2 dc, be faithful smh
-# Orin’s dagger shall be mine, one day
Gotta love it because i can use one channel divinity for a spell slot and still have my clone prepared without asking for short rests all the time lmfaoo
Part of me wishes past editions also got some attention
Quick update btw
Paladin and I are making the educated guess my Ranger comes back as undead. Possibly Hallowed One?
There are still many many people who stayed loyal to the old editions
Not that far back. I just assume the "love" was for 5.5e
And god knows I see enough people complaining about 5e to know that many people prefer older editions
No? I know many people who have stuck with 3.5e
There are some people who still play 2e only
Unless you’re referring to 2014 5e when you say “older editions” but even then, many people have stayed with it
Well the Japanese “Sword World” system is kinda 2nd Ed D&D gone its own way.
Its not gonna happen, at least from WotC side
Things getting Larianbrewed is probably the closest you'll get to love from older versions, and its not even that old
BG3 is only 5e 2014 because the game was released before 5e 2024
Thing is the “Fall of Netheril” is cut straight out of my favorite older edition content.
A good thing, the 5e 2014 part that is
Subjective
Its more likely for an older version to get a mod that adapts the newer ruleset than the other way around (because it was already new)
So now we have both
Yeah, bg3 mods take off the cage Hasbro wants on players.
Yet… I think most old stuff can be translated into the 5e system without issue
Can't you like, just bend the system to suit your needs?
It's so open ended… like you don't need to bend a string, it does that on its own.
I like something about each edition, but most is flavor and percentages when it comes down to it.
bg3 would be a lot less fun with 2024
Less multiclassing?
that's a big part of it
it's just more fun to experiment there
yeah but imagine how fun it would be to just have weapon masteries all the time
I am unfortunately not familiar with different editions, but my group is just adjusting things as we go. We just use the most recent rulebooks as a baseline and go from there, but i cant imagine just going from one edition to another is difficult
wouldn't it be crazy if weapon proficiency already gave you weapon skills over there
yeah skills that you can use once per short rest
go my once-every-turn darkness blasting spear
My schedule is packed with exams and competitions all week that means no DnD for at least a week💔
I don't actually like the weapon master system that much, seems like an afterthought, but having practical experience in HEMA I have to say it is an attempt to take training into account. It's just… bad.
The Weapon Mastery system gives weapon users tactical options they didn't have in 2014.
Also, it’s an addition, I’d rather take it over… nothing
It didn’t replace any abilities, or potential other ones, it’s a new ability that was an addition on top of the level 1 abilities of other classes
Does anyone here know much about the enemies in dnd I have a question but don't think I'm knowledgeable enough to answer myself
hi, how long will this update cost?
I’d say just ask it. Tough to know what you don’t know, right?
Up to 6 hours (may vary depending on any issues they run into)
And we gave reminders of this maintenance at least as early as 1/14/2026
ok...
Due to the time difference, I've never been able to remember exactly when it was. 🙁
Pretty sure the timestamp on the announcement gives the time in your local timezone: #dnd-announcements message
But yeah, we'll all just have to wait until the maintenance is completed.
im thinking of trying sorcerer paladin multiclass for my first multiclass any tips on race or subclasses or anything else?
dont get sorcerer levels until lv7
in this server can you join a dnd group?
that's one of its uses yes
#find-a-game should help
That moment you realize the dnd character you’re making is basically just Gerson from Undertale/Deltarune
Stopping at 7 always seems like such a pity because just one more level and you get another feat you know...
oh sick thanks!
Hellow
playing sorcadin for the last two sessions of the campaign at that point
Depends till when you go but thats fair enough
also i meant first 6 levels paladin next x sorcerer
Giant space eels!
oathbreaker likes the 7th level, the rest are usually fine
Ikr, first time ive seen it, speaking of which is there a statblock for that?
I think my monsters of the Multiverse has a misprint lol
Water myrmidon says it has +3 con mod yet its con is only 15
Does that mean it has a higher value or less🤔
It's treated in my copy as having 16-17 con
No, no, I mean in your book, would it technically be worth more since there's a misprint?
Depends tbh, probably the same maybe unless someone very specific wanted it for some reason
I'm gonna play dnd properly for the first time soon after lurking at at edges of the community for a few years lol
I'm very excited eheh
What character are you playing?
What is cantrip?
I'm gonna be a rogue because spellcasting seems too complicated for the first game xd
We're running one of the animal adventures campaigns so I'm going to be a cat :D
Ahh, a tabaxi?
A cantrip is something you can cast like a spell, but its not a levelled spell thus needs no spellslot
A spell that doesn't take spell slots to cast.
You know fewer of them than of levelled spells but can reuse them a lot
Nah, like an actual cat :^
Animal adventures adds extra races that are basically normal animals but with human intelligence and stuff
Primarily cats and dogs, but newer campaigns in the series add a lot more species
Is it only for mages?
Specific classes get them but it is a Spellcasting ability
Im playing barbarian rn so I can ignore it ig
Paladins and Rangers don’t get them normally without replacing their fighting style for example.
But subclasses like the Arcane Trickster and Eldritch Knight do get them
You can ignore it if your class has none
Race too
Some races have cantrips
Morning yall
Heyoo
Hiiiiiii
hey guys
So, good news and news
Booo. My fridge just quit. Anybody know an ice based sorcerer to chill my food?
im new here
Welcome.
The game or the Donut-Nacho-Donut? Which one?
i think they meant doom and despair
Dentistry and dominos.
ha ha ha
get a load of this guy
Could be
we do have #dnd-newcomers to help folks who are newer to the game. we can reference some helpful links to get you started and any questions you have we can assist with
thanks i appreciate it
My dead Ranger can be revived, but he has yet to give the specifics on the consequences
are there houserules this DM has around characters being reincarnated/resurrected?
That's gonna be fun xd
Again, I have yet to receive the specifics
It'll be hard to with DnD Beyond being down
I think theyre asking because resurrecting spells exist without any consequences
So no houserules that have been communicated beforehand. That's a bit red-flaggy.
The DM is homebrewing if there are unknown consequences
Unless the consequences are purely storyrelated because an npc is reviving your ranger
right, I just wondered if they had said there would be consequences or if in a session zero or any other time they discussed house rules around it.. even just saying "if characters need to be resurrected, there may be additional consequences to using that magic"
because otherwise the spells usually just work with no consequences.. outside of reincarnate which can change the species. But that one can be fun
a good point and also possible 🙂
can be fun as well.. this magic is high level and we're using it on your friend here that we don't know.. So you owe the Temple of Tyr a favor
The "what does DM do in event of pc death" thing is something i've been trying so hard to avoid
Well, no. If that was the case, there wouldn't be any huge problems with dying in the first place
Cant always avoid it
From what i am told for now, it seems my character will be resurrected, but as an undead
Well you can but imo that takes part of the suspense away
When your players know theyll live no matter what why be scared of doing stuff
i've been on the extremely cautious/defensive side due to a past dm having been specifically out to get me
on my table, echo and others can res as soon as they have the means, there's even a safety net withers-like being they could suck up to for one free res, but with that DM I genuinely had no idea as a player
Eeeh
Yes there would be
Just less
1 you can fail the mission as people go down, and not get the chance to revive later because youre all dead or the world ended
Whatever works for you and your players, i just know id like to come close to meeting death every now and then
2 it costs a looot of gold to resurrect after a while
Just thought of a silly think with Tiefling and Astral self monk
3 you need to actually have someone with the spell
there's probably a good midpoint, but so far most of my expereince as a player has been on one extreme end
Just screaming at the top of your lungs using the visage to be heard from 600ft, and then thaumaturgy
Nice
ello
Dying is all fun and games till you realise you lost that one gemstone you needed
Just got the Boss fight i was waiting for so long and got half hp at first attack
i got down 2 times and teh 2 times i got up with Nat20. I CANT BE MORE HAPPY!!
Its your special day
Feel like playing an Assassin
Anyways, it seems that my character will revive as an undead if I choose to
I love reborn
I promise it’s not because my last two characters were recreations of Frankenstein’s monster and general grievous from Star Wars
Wait i have misunderstood reborn i think, doesnt sound like this is that
Can I find DnDbeyojd maintenance time here somewhere?
I’d love for there to be a more ghostly species version of reborn, to cover the more incorporeal undead while reborn covers the corporeal
-# No clue if this has been done in an official or third party capacity
It was expected to last about six hours, starting about 4-5 hours ago.
Playing casper the ghost
Bweh
Thanks. Maybe a bit longer then.
Oh nevermind it will finish in 2 hours
Now that’s a good idea for homebrew
well, we'll see, it's always hard to estimate such things
aww snap I forgot dnd beyond is going under maintenance
im stepping outside and a ray will struck on me
should have downloaded that character sheet
literally vaporize me until ashes
And for now, the biggest 3 drawbacks are basically no trespassing on property, no sunlight exposure, and I'll need blood
man, everytime i hear about mearls, sounds like he completely forgot the game he made
I saw him suggest to balance tier 3+ casters to replace thier 1-4 slots to instead give them 5 level 5 slots that recharge after a minute, solely because he calculated that a level 5 fireball is only going to do about 36 damage, because fireball is obviously the only spell that matters and it only ever hits one monster /sarcasm
- I personally love the idea of Hollowed One, especially if I can combine it with an Oathbreaker or Shadow Paladin
- I'm a little curious what your name and pfp is
- That’s cool as hell
- my pfp is a character in one of my campaigns and my name is just my name and a title I change every five minutes
Start practising your count dracula impressions
I just can’t stick with one title
- Agreed. And if you think that's awesome, you should see the source material. I would send a picture here if I could, the armor is way too awesome
Tonight I get to reduce strahd to smithereens
You got this, Sora, destroy him
- Good to know. Some of them were a little strange, so I wanted to ask about it
Spoiler free, though. I'm in a CoS campaign too
Often I change the name to promote my setting, but this one and the previous one is just for kicks
Nah this is a different campaign don't worry
Nothing better to have than knockback all the time and cracks of bridges we have to cross later.
Juggernaut barbarian.
Different module
Anyways, can I show you a picture of the armor in question? (If I could ever make a Hollowed One Oathbreaker/Shadow Paladin)
Aren’t you in a 2014 game?
Imagine having to retreat and explore while being dragon wise to banks too deep.
Or did you move to playing 2024 Ranger?
And then buring the treasure on islands that sunk thousands of years ago.
: )
Having a negative 1 to Wis is scary in high level dnd
I’m good, but thanks anyway. If I change my mind I’ll tell you
Who the hell damages stats, thats not in the rules of dungeons and dragons.
Me sneak attack critting Tokii for 3d4 + 18d6 cause the "handsome" man said so.
And the dragons have no fault of being stuck in their ancheint creeks.
Locked off, and then laked to holy water.
I meant my mod cause I have a 9 in wis
Look at the faye, lets go genocide the elves.
“You know what? I’ll Sneak attack my party a second time!” /jk
HAHAHAHA HAHAH.
dragons dealt with war and felt the slow motion of calorie wars wear off to graves.
"My child will use only the bare minimum while controlling a PC with mind control"
"Sneak attack, plus piercer, savage attacker take the 6 instead if 1, run away bonus action hide that's a 40 to stealth"
Trying to make a Dragon name for my lore, any ideas?
“I can’t use an action surge! We haven’t reached the boss yet!”
Bad Guy uses Dominate Person
“Action surge is incredible right now.”
I usually use fantasy name generator tbh
Great Googly Moogly /jk
Usually something involving claws or fangs with their Elements is what I like
mash four or five weird syllables together, has to have at least an X and a Z
Take something relaxed to their role and then make it sound like a name
Or use the random dragon name table in Fizban’s
"Alright fighter, attack the wizard 4 times with your vicious greatsword, then action surge and attack 4 more times, alright Wizard you take 20d6 + 70 damage"
What kind of dragon? What kinds of themes and personality?
“Don’t forget the bonus action attack with GWM!”
People don't realize how much the new GWM adds up on fighter later on
Love that +6
Its a mixed dragon, taking from the Ferrous dragons back in older editions and mixing it with a black Dragon. Evil, Led the Evil Dragons to turn on the Giants, starting their eternal feud in my lore
All those attacks with a mod of 12 to 15 depending on if they have a Giant belt, Great Weapon Fighting so all 1s and 2s are 3s
Wrong one
GWM is a damage buff
Great Weapon Fighting turns the 1s and 2s to 3s
Ye I corrected it
Not to mention the Boon that let's you add your Strength score to a crit hit mods damage
Supposedly resembling Ouroboros
Martial damage goes goofy
And yet people will ignore it and pretend that they’re bad 😭
Fighters do be great at tearing people apart
Fighters carry hard
Vecna when I choose to crit him for 3d4 + 6 + 24d6 cause at level 20 rogue can just choose to have a 20 on any d20 roll once per rest and all my sneak attack dice are 3s minimum cause of subclass
Minimum of 73 damage
Then he heals it back up.
I'm getting imagery of inky black ferrofluids and possibly toroidal rings of magnetic fields.
It's about sending a message
“Try again” moment.
Ooh my vecna fight was epic, will the pumpkin knight fighter going ham with his legendary greatsword, haste, enlarge, holy weapon,
bosses healing themselves is evil and should be a crime
Praying that my Vecna fight is gonna be that good
Not the healing 80 HP part, Urizt’s part
(4d8 +d4 +2d8+15) × 10 with action surge haste and great weapon mastery
Ok but what if it’s at will and a bonus action and nearly 100 hp a round.
okay, making sure one of my bosses heals 470 hp in one turn once
My opinion of Vecna’s stats changed when I remembered he can just spam Animate Dead and can heal off them.
Oh my god 💔
What does toroidal mean
Ah Tiamat moment
That needs to be like a war crime or smth 😔
A surface that makes something shaped like a ring or a donut.
i'm gonna mail my DM a box of infinite wonderous joys that lasts for 4 seconds to then leave him roaming the earth in desperate search to feel happiness like that again if he does that to me
I mean Tiamat is cr30
The meta we ignore is done by the strike team format but the way they roam in seems like we are trying to run in a 10ft cube of anti disease with a juggernaut barbarian keeping knockback simple as we get a use of 5E tunnel fighter for it is balanced to the stop them on purpose so we can feel the horde build the pressure on what we have done.
Tiamat’s aspect is basically two Cr30 monsters in one stat block.
The nearly 500hp heal is what makes her able to fight the true monsters.
Ah, ok
The party
They say hit same thing, I say hit once per turn per round with the two other feats and what I need to feel like the fine stats we got at liftoff was best.
I want to take it as a doubble feated species.
Martials carry even harder than people realize too at high level
So long as it is a two turn stage it is liftoff for the same stop prone and lose their last movement.
Walk over it and save the day for the famous horde ride.
Rope.
Cracks in the caves.
Cause sure spellcasters have reality warping abilities, but monsters also have double digit saves on the saves those spellcasters be attacking, legendary resistances, and damage resistances/immunities tied to magic damage types
How do you feel about "Ophiotorus, called Inkscale" for the black iron scales that flow like a fluid, but are harder than iron?
Rod of lordly might and climb myself.
Also Magic resistance is super common
ooooh, I like that
Where as Martials are just constantly hitting and constantly doing damage
Look up videos of ferrofluids.
But yeah bad guy AC doesn’t scale as fast as their saves
And damage resistance is majority for spells
Yeah and AC caps out at 25 base for official monsters
reminds me a lot of venom and my image of Frederick dragon (I forgot the name sadly)
Which is the Tarrasque, Bahamut and Tiamat
Usually what you fight at high levels will have around 18 to 22 AC
one thing to remark, getting close to a creature depending of the class force you to either Stand your ground or disengage
bounded accuracy usually means that things you can put your proficiency bonus in are going to reign supreme at the high levels
man had my second game ever.
and i DEFINITELY had thoughts about it
Gore Magala?
Followers of Tiamat/Bahamut casting Shield of Faith and Warding Bond of their Aspects
because if you try to move away without it you get opportunity attacked for free sometimes.
Yeah but you can take it
Kinda, that is the thing.
Monk and Rogue cant take the hits too much so they get disengage for free
Yes
Speedy feat is honestly one of the best feats for any martial.
i played a fighter human because i thought the game would HAVE combat
it had none😭 so i just had to sit back. it was really fun intimidating everyone with my sword though :) (even if i almost got arrested). it was a really cool murder mystery
While fighter and barbarian dont get it so they must stand their ground without giving any terrain back
Glad the 2024 Fighter has bonuses to their skills now
A fighter and barb can stand their ground
Same and you can add your second wind to some
But like I said they can take the speedy feat for disadvantage on opp attacks
Technically 2024 fighter has a bonus action disengage
Or get Grappled.
Cause it gives a con point if you don't want a dex point.
Second Wind?
Since 2024 Fighter can move without OA when they use 2nd wind at level 5 I think
Look at periapt of wound closure technology and antimagic crystals being what it is made of.
Yep
And two broken wishes .
Tactical Shift, the second level 5 feature
Every one second after my doublet of dramatic demise.
Yep, but that is a point i would like to remark only
Casters can cast from a lot of distance and safely
the problem though was that one of their players kept asking a lot of questions and basically slowing the game down even if it was a oneshot. like usually i dont mind inquiry, i think its really fun. but he was rehashing over detail he forgot which must be repeated and kept interrupting everyone which was honestly annoying.
but luckily the dm kinda countered that by reminding him to let others have their turn or tell them that the stuff was irrelevant
Barbs and Pallies don't get easy Disengage, ohh .. except pallies get mounts, which can disengage for them.
ugh, going back to 2014 is so hard, especially when you see 2024 monk
And they do little cause the monster has a +16 and usually advantage to the saves they're attacking
Yeah, who would make you do that?
high level 5e does become a bit crazy with saving throws imo but i feel ive talked a lot about that here
Indeed, didnt said they dont get that problem.
Doing 13 damage with lightning bolt isn't the same as doing 113 damage with attacks
The humble Longbow having 5x or more range than 95% of spells
I'm in a 2014 only server and a 2014 campaign because it started before the 2024 was released, and I just made a monk after I retired my hexblade
The problem for martials most of the time is that some tough enemies get lots of martial resistances
I've never played a 2014 Monk
Not really
I was timed out after sticking a reply to why magic is weak to the length of the game where the DM lets you treat the month time as downtime to do whatever you want and you get a critical.
It's generally only spectre and blobby enemies
Bludgeon, piercing and slaying are their damages mostly. Only if im not wrong Monk get access to get Force damage
You almost have to optimize defensively.
No xp farming.
Hi chat
Ye which is among the least resisted damage types
Also the Boon of Irresistable Offense allows you ignore BPS resistance
I just specialize in grappling now with Astral self
I would like to Eldritch knight get the chance to add Force damage to the weapon damage or modify it but i guess that would be too op with a class like it
So the Tarrasque being the one with BPS resistance you'd fight doesn't matter
You're more likely to deal with resistances if you have a weapon that does elemental damage
Like flametongue and frostbrand
Ah, the accursed topic has arisen again?
No
Yeah, that is another problem most of the time. Martials depend of the luck in getting items most of the time, except Monk, monk might be the cheater of martials like Warlock is the cheater of casters
I love 2024 chucking out the Magic weapon resistance/immunity
Yeah, no luck needed
Tbf if the dm isn't giving martials magic items they're the problem.
Because in 2014 they either mattered or didn’t at all the moment a magic weapon is added
Now, we bring up casters being safe and at range, but are we forgetting here why the enemies are at such a distance? Could it be because… they’re fighting something that’s up close?
Two wishes with all I need to render the threats to me and my fellows extinct.
Casters get spells, sometimes for free completely so, their improvement is passive while most martials need to either use money to get better weapons, upgrade them or more
Also most enemies nowadays have ranged attacks
i mean my two cents is that while yes, martials like having magic items more than casters, it doesnt mean that spellcasters cant also benefit from them as much or more than martials can
The amount of magic swords in dnd is amusing
I’m glad they got expanded to be “magic weapons” but the sword economy was big
I want there to be a magic blowgun
Also let’s talk about the fact that in these “Martials are worse” discussions, it’s always in hypothetical situations and 50% of the martials’ kit is being ignored, I.e: items and feats
True, there is lots of wands, scrolls, etc. etc.
That passive improvement relies on being able to do damage that's not immune or resisted.
i like a lot of the martial positivity here, but this convo feels like we are kind of glossing over some stuff
For example, at high level you're lucky if you can do full damage if at all with Fire, Cold and Necrotic.
I’m only having the extra positivity to counter the annoying negativity about something that’s honestly not a problem
True, but i will use the feat argument like you did before, elemental adept let you adapt that problem.
A fighter in my Eve of Ruin group (not that one Sora) has a lot of saving throws that don’t care about magic resistance which is fun.
AT least 1 element? yes, but you can base your build around that element
That's only for Resistance, immunity gets more often.
haha yeah i love that, magic reistance? sir this is a Club
Also Rogue being able to put Unconscious a lot of undead is very fun.
Having a Lich removed from a fight because of the Rogue is fun
I have played dnd very very close to the rules for years at all tiers, trust me, there is no objective divide.
I haven't used cunning strike as much as I should be
But still, you can overcome a problem in a way
what happened?
And unless you get the chance of some caster casting an upgrade in your weapon or some shopkeeper that take all your money for a good magic weapon
The problem is the max of attunment stuff too
He didn't have a Legendary Resistance?
Fun fact +1x weapons and armor have no attunement
Spellcasters die so often in my games my Kills so far this year on players are
sorcerer 5
Druids 1
Monks 1
Cleric 1
He did. The rogue just kept spamming it till it worked
i know, but i mean more powerfull weapons do and armors too
Rings too sometimes and they are like one of many good items that some PC can get
that's kinda an icon move ngl
If something is powerful it should need attunement
ring of resistance doesn't anymore
I mean Rogues don’t have a cool down on it. They can just do it again.
Let’s be honest, non-magic BPS resistance or immunity is just a none-issue tier 2 and above, because if you have a DM that has not given out a single magic weapon at that point, that’s just… disappointing
But you can do serious damage with not attunement stuff
And it’s also a non-issue entirely in 2024
Ask Nealen, I have a vicious dagger which is non-attunement and I put out a lot of damage with my vicious dagger and +1 green uncommon hand crossbow
So I was playing monopoly last night and had a weird idea I might flush out, a dnd/monopoly game. Where each player chooses a class and that class has certian powers they can use during the game. I might try to build this out. I think the hard part would be figuring out what each class powers would be.
theres a handfull of creatures that are just flat resistant to all B P S now, ghosts, the tarrasqe
that's hilarious, what level does it come with
from what I saw, it seems like the convo has treated damage as the end-all-be-all of being good, and since martials are specifically good at single target damage, it places them on a kinda unrealistic pedestal
my opinion is that yeah, martials can hold their weight, I also want to be realistic about this
Level 14? I wanna say
Yeah level 14, cause level 13 is subclass level
On my rogue I only have one attunement required item
oo
cool cool
And it's a weapon of warning for advantage on initiative and protection against ambushes
My other magic items I use are non-attunement
Which one of which is gloves of thievery so I automatically pass up to 30 on Sleight of Hand checks which got me out of a bad situation last session.
Yeah Rowan gots some sick skills!
im thinking of using a greatsword with attunment, frost brand greatsword.
But then i have the dillema
+1longsword + duelist
Or
Greatsword + great weapon fighting
Longsword is less damage but applies Sap
Greatsword is more consistent damage so up to you.
I'm enjoying EoRs version of ||Death House||
2014, sadly
I still wanna play my dual wield paladin sometime
Jabal 2
She's a Vengeance Paladin but yeah lol
If you dont have great weapon master feat use the longsword + shield
It's a character that sort of requires level 4 to come online but if I play her in a usual campaign I have an incharacter explanation for why it won't work
its what im doing for now, 1d8+5 per attack
The Dm let me change of fighting style between missions tho
Which is "I really hurt my hand"
And later if i get more lvs i can get a second fighting style so adding defense or Archery is something i can do
tunnel fighter too so i can stand more my ground
or get some battle maneuvers too
Does anyone have a recommended virtual tabletop? Our dm is doing it for the first time and I figured I could help. I wanted to see if anyone had good recommendations. I know beyond Dnd has there’s, roll 20. And probably many more
owlbear rodeo works well
if you want basic and free, i suggest owlbear rodeo
foundry is great, but that is straight 50 dollars upfront (just the DM needs to buy it), but more cost effective than a roll20 membership if youre playing for multiple months
tabletop simulator seems cool, but it's soooo much set up and so tedious.
Yeah, but Grappling is also not as good in 2014.
I’m playing a gambler character and I’m trying to pick a class which best fits them, what class would best fit that idea?
Any class can be a gambler. How do you want gambling to affect their play style?
Yea, I'ma try and see if my dm will allow the 2024 grappler feat
Illusionist wizard would be my go to for a card player.
Mostly a compulsive gambler, they more do it as a vice because of what they experienced as a child
Okay so this is still any class, because it's not mechanics. How do you want gambling to affect their combat mechanics?
I never play d&d and im thinking in do a group with a bunch of friends (not online) any tip?
Wild magic sorcerer taking exploding dice spells like sorcerous burst and chromatic orb maybe
Being a compulsive gambler can be anything from a Barbarian who is a thrill seeker rushing into battle or it could be something like you're a spellcaster whose spells look like gigantic dice smashing into enemies.
(im asking in the right Channel?)
People that DM in-person sessions,
what is behind that trifold cover thing that is always present at your side of the table? Do you just have a bunch of papers on the table hidden, or is there actual stuff on those walls of the tri fold?
Gambling can be just part of your personality or it could be integral to your actual abilities, but it's up to you how deep you want to go.
And any reccomend starter set?
was looking at magic items and this pipe of smoking monsters really caught my attention anyone have any example game play where this is used?
Official DM Screens from Wizards of the Coast will often have relevant rules and info on the inside, but I have seen people use homemade ones that could be just pieces of cardboard all the way up to fancy carved wooden ones with clever joins and dice towers.
Lots of tables for rule of thumb things like how much AC and hp a door has.
What charmed, fear, incapacitated do etc.
Notes and the monster statblocks for that session etc.
Pretty sure it's just a flavor item.
If you are ok with homebrew, there is a merchant class with a gambler subclass
Wait who is the owner of this server?
Wizards of the Coast
My DM screen, the trifold thing as you call it, has several things and does several things.
It has pre-printed info on the back, but i've also printed my own and taped it to the back.
This info is mainly rules at a glance, but i also added a list of gods and their domains.
i also hide minis behind the screen before i unveil them, and do most of my rolls behind the screen.
Huh
This is the official D&D server.
D&D discord is operated by WotC, owners of D&D
I know I just wanted to the owner of it
Interesting! I'd imagine for those who DM online have something similar. Like documents and tabs open to keep track of information like that.
that is correct. For my online games I have tabs open, and even MORE info on hand
for my in person games I just grab my PC levels, hp, and AC.
for my online games I have an exact copy of the character sheets on hand
I think the funny thing is that for my campaigns I'm in, I'm the dedicated note taker. So I literally take notes of stuff our party has met, what our DM has said that's important, turn order and HPS, etc. every singe session.
I think my DM likes it because it makes their job easier and can just look at my stuff 😂
in person games, for me, need to be fast and punchy. I run for somethin gsimilar to adventurer's league and can have different pc every game.
on line games can be more slow paced and intimate to the characters present.
i also take notes behind the screen, mostly when i make up someone's name >_>
I like to do that since I am someone that loves to note important information or have details to refer back to later.
For example, one of our BBEGs in this campaign I am in is reoccuring, so I've been note taking everything we know this BBEG can do, and what abilities they have.
when i do sit as a player, I am an avid notekeeper.
I practically figured out the stat block for him at this point by doing some math xD
My current DM doesn't know that I got this figured out, so I plan on keeping it a secret unless asked.
i do have players at my tables that try to figure out stats, which is something i like watching
When you play in person. Do you keep track of players hp?
I've wondered this, on Owlbear I can see hp and stuff and it occasionally informs what the monster is doing.
In person if they keep a straight poker face someone could be walking around on 3hp for half the session.
I may be relatively new to D&D (only 2 months), but I am pretty damn good at math and probability
And especially since this is a reoccurring entity, it's fair game.
I trust players to be honest about their hp
I keep track of everyone's HPs for them, and I always ask to "verify" what I have written down at the end of teach turn.
2 of my party members play on their phone so I share my screen of the board and do the stuff for them. It's definitely a benefit that I have 2 monitors.
As a DM, I have a lot to track already, so I don’t find it super worth my time
As do I, but given the choice of two targets and one guy is on 15% and the other is on 80% your humanoid enemy can see that. I've lost track. Normally I just ask who's looking more beat up.
As a player, I do constantly ask for the conditions for each enemy we've encountered.
Yes. I want to know if a pc is about to die, or can take a pounding.
I do that as well, but I just make assumptions on who I think is the most beat up
Hey guys, Have you all got a party hide out for you and your friends??
So you'd be the kind of player who would appreciate status tokens on/attached to the minis?
Yes.
My DM does a very good job of using dndbeyond VTT to do this.
I still haven't found someone who can do it as well as he does on AboveVTT or roll20
online i almost never use a vtt, and it's nearly all theater of the mind. but i try to be incredibly verbose and explicit with what's happening, conditions, spacing, etc
I never had a inperson one before, just online stuff so far.
I decided at the end of 2025 to give D&D a shot and focus on fantasty RPs as a genre to have fun with in 2026.
My DMs usually have a link or a copy of the character sheet, so they should have a general idea of character hp.. if a player keeps taking substantial damage and tries to lie about their hp, I think a dm would pretty easily catch on
It's my annual thing I do everywhere, where I pick a section of "activities" to do throughout the year, then in the summer I hard focus on one specific thing. I've been doing this since COVID, and decided for 2026 to give D&D and other fantasy games/activities a shot.
how do you do combat?
lol I have been ignored XD
party hide out?
I guess thats the term for that
A secret tree house
i don't really do a lot of combat, most of my games tend to be more narrative, exploration, and social focused.
When I do combat I will try to be incredibly verbose and detailed with where everything is, but if it's too complex i will whip up an ugly map
Well not only a secret tree house lol
Bastions?
I'm assuming you mean a Bastion?
Any tip for dnd?
Do you guys also like to "study" other characters or character types before playing a new D&D character?
It's something I like to do that I just find fun, and it's genuinely helped me a little bit with roleplaying
yeah you can say that surely
Read the fist chapter of the basic rules and your class/subclass features carefully
lots of little things that many players miss that make a massive difference in some really cool things you can do
Tbh, I just spin a wheel and ran with it. Heck I didn't even plan on playing D&D I was just asked to fill in a role because someone in my main campaign I'm currently in left and my DM/friend needed someone to fill in the gaps. So he asked me, someone with 0 knowledge of TTRPGs at all, play as a lvl 6 draconic sorcerer kobold.
Holy heck it has been a huge learning curve to learn how to play a sorcerer as a brand new player.
Generally, you want to at least glance at the other classes/subclasses your partymembers are playing to get a general idea of their capabilities to coordinate better as well c:
Although because of it, I know I really love spellcasters and want to explore more about spellcasting.
spellcasting is cool
spellcasters are fun c:
Ok
anyone see whats actually new or changed cuza the update?
Love that
I kind of want to try a build based on Wyll from BG3, where it's a warlock that uses a lot of melee-based buffs.
update? on ddb?
hexblade warlock
they did maitanence for 4 hrs i assume something was fixed
Yeah, hexblade.
might of just been more fixes from the outage a bit ago
iirc something with the fourms crashed the entire site
bummer i was hoping to find some fun gameplay examples or a yt vid
Today's update was primarily for the back-end of the website
It just makes shaped smoke for a few seconds.
Could play a summoner and flavor your summons as coalessing from pipe smoke
So my current DM for the main campaign I am in is setting up our next tone. So I will drop my sorcerer buddy (rip Bh'aub le'Kobold 😭 ) for a hexblade Warlock
Hexblade is mid, just be any other Warlock subclass and take pact of the blade >:p /half-joking
though summoning spells are far more limited in 5e'24 (for good reason)
if a (sub)class is fun, then that's all that matters. numbers don't need to go brrrrr
Tbh, I'm in 3 campaigns, 2 of them use 2014. And so far, I prefer 2024.
That's just me.
I didn't say that though, did I? 🧐
Hexblade is just overrated lol
Yeah I can't go back personally
2024 is honnestly the better system
but a bunch of dms have the 2014 books and thigns are mostly compatible so they prefer to just play what they know and don't have to buy new books for
Could be really wacky and go eldritch knight
Eldritch knight? What class is that for?
... ew. Fighters.
@humble cairn @blissful ibex are there any items that make smoke where i could create some time of Morel Mackernasey type character (from hunterxhunter) if familiar
fighter
Fighter, you basically become a 1/3 wizard
Ah
I have a lvl 2 warforged fighter and we haven't leveled up yet, so I haven't picked a subclass for them.
you're not a great caster or sword-dude
One day I'll get over my hatred of Eldritch Knight perhaps
For now
Bladesinger 🧐
Ranger is if Eldritch Knight had Druid spells and Rogue expertise :)
Maybe some fog cloud + blindsight shenanigans
go quarterstaff plus shillelagh off of Magic Initiate: Druid for bonus points
good call, bladesinger is another sword and spell guy.
Well not really, Ranger and Paladin have faster spell progression
except ranger is a 1/2 caster instead of 1/3 c:
I was like thinking like a bar and b******l, a mixup of that with multiple floors be a good party hideout
Yeah? And?
I don't like Eldritch Knights for other reasons
What do you guys think of that
So what subclass of fighter do y'all think I should try for my warforged? The context is that our D&D campaign is based off Monster Hunter.
been a looong time since I watched that so can't remember the character at all XD
finished it january of 2015, so 11 years O_o
I do have some more ideas to draw it out and make it look pretty unique
Battlemaster, Champion, Psi-Warrior could be fun
Cavalier 😎
is it because their magic usually isn't eldritch and they usually aren't knights? /hj
no and. Just reminiscing over the various sword and spell dudes
War Cleric is so much better now-a-days, if you haven't played the new one, I'd highly recommend
haha the smoking pipe fella
Although I did realize something and this made me get a bigger picture of how balance works.
What is the campaign youre in currently?
Eversmoking bottle maybe
then grab blind fighting and skulker for 20 foot blindsight and go ham XD
New War cleric is some good stuff
In this party we have this guy who basically min maxed his barbarian character to have stupidly high HP, AC, and damage output at lvl 4. The current DM we have is extremely relaxed so I guarantee this user probably rolled multiple times to get the most optimal stats when making this character. Regardless, I decided to use point buy because I felt like it was fair.
With that in mind, I realized that something that works against someone who does this, especially as a spellcaster, is to force Ability Checks.
This is just flavor, you could do this in many ways. Echo Knight, where your Echo is a smoke construct. Any of the Summons spells could be made of smoke as well.
my rogue is gonna get even stupider next level up when i get Prof in cha and wis saves
generally fairly difficult to have both really good AC and really good saves outside of high level rogue, paladin, and monk IIRC
cause i took res con earlier so ill have prof in almost all saves
works for enemies as well, if something seems to have a really hard to meet AC, try targeting their saves
I still feel like I nerfed myself since it's painfully obvious everyone in my party rolled for their stats, while I did Point Buy.
Collecting the infinity proficiencies
I also feel like this current DM is picking favorites, as he yet to add in my own items that he promised to give us based on our backstory, but got everyone else's basically done, but mine.
and point buy / standard array ends up below average for 4d6 drop lowest IIRC
73.5 average for that verses 72 points on standard array
How much you wanna waver somebodies character is dying tonight?
me when i take res str at level 16 and use a snap to pass half the saves in the universe
So last night I literally had to homebrew create the item for him -_-.
But it's alright I guess. It taught me how the homebrew creation works in dndbeyond.
Always possible
I worry for Rowan against the man, the myth, the legend
Perhaps we don't split up next time? 🧐
I dunno, we might have to lmao
We ain't got no Diamonds for Revivify, life's good
If Rowan goes, I'll bring my Vengeance Pally
If Sovis dies...
It's between World Tree Barbarian or Elements Monk
The pally is one of my more id say annoying characters
Anyways, I'm excited for my session tonight playing my sorcerer!
Bh'aub might have a big exposition moment if what the DM is hinting me about is real, so that's interesting. (Yes, my kobold full name is Bh'aub le'Kobold)
Rowan is pretty chill, and leans towards Sovis's solutions, but that Pally would likely lean towards the others solutions
Pronounced "bob"
Got another AL game tonight with my Valor Bard with two levels in warlock
trying to get her to level 8 for Pact weapon attack + Agonizing Blast Eldritch Blast shenanigans
She is a ball of fury who opts for the direct solution
Bh'aub has an ego to him because he never faced "failure" or real life/death issues before, until now.
she hits 7 after the game tonight which means she finally gets her baric inspiration charges back on a short rest
my characters are either chill or rage usually
Yay!
My kobold has been having a feud with our minotaur paladin for the last few sessions.
They follow basically opposite deities and the Paladin isn't wanting to listen to my kobold.
My characters are typically chill and/or the only level-headed people in their parties
Mine are usually the level headed sane ones but are secretly deranged
I've played a few deranged women in my current group
I very occasionally like playing cold and calculating fellows 🧐
Stares at my Yuan-Ti Artificer
