Hey guys , how do I post a request in #looking-for-dm . I want people in my time zone or nearby (ist)
See instructions on #find-a-game
Ok thanks
Hey I was wondering since I wanted to get into DND where can I start?
#learn-to-play is a good place to start, where you'll find the basic rules and other useful resources
#dnd-newcomers channel is also a great place to go if you have specific questions, and people are happy to help!
@fair summit thank you for the information!
good morning everyone, how are yall
Tired 😪 I'm trying to learn as much as I can so I can join a group
Hru
I am good
Good,still learning DnD
You guys like Tenacious D?
i do
Based!! Jables and KG rock 🔥
jables on the toy sax is my comfort media
does dnd have a Pavise shield?
Not specifically, but you could literally just flavor a normal shield as one. Flavor is free 😎
hey guys im a new dm i have to plan a campaign for my friends and one of them is a wizard but idk how does wizard class and spells work can sm1 explain?
could probaly use a minion as a shield and get half cover +2 ac
I'd start by learning how spells and spell slots work. If you already know about that, reading the wizard class itself would be instructive
The Wizard has access to a lot of spells. When they level up, they get spells equal to the prepared spells they unlock. They get their spells through copying external ones into their spell book.
Like the wizard could copy a glyph into their spellbook that has, say, Fireball.
They spend gold and time unlocking their spells.
Also I need help in #character-discussion
where to learn that?
oh whats glyph?
also if me and my friends play do we need to have physical map and characters and stuff?
Glyphs are basically spells inscribed on walls or stones and such.
The basic rules, see here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Wizard
You should.
ohh okok so the ones dm will give?
Yes.
Any good DnD tutorials I should watch? Like the ultimate tutorial?
how big should it be
Nah you don't really that's optional, if you're playing in person it can help but you can really use chess pieces or coins or m&ms really anything or you can just use your imagination
aight bet thanks
That's not really enough info to recommend anything, are you looking as a player? A potential DM?
The cheating answer (but one I'd agree with) would be to read the basic rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Tutorials will necessarily simplify things, the basic rules just tell you what is what
If the amount of text makes you want to run away, the first two pages of this pdf offer a very condensed version:
https://media.wizards.com/2023/downloads/dnd/Peril_in_Pinebrook_COMPLETE.pdf
@rotund sand also recommend keeping some random tables on hand but especially a list of names you like because the party is inevitably gonna ask some random NPCs name you didn't think to name and you'll have to pull one out of thin air
Thanks
Np!
Hi the best way to learn I think is to find a game with a GM whose open to new players but someone else recommended a PDF a few messages up which apparently has a good 2 page overview
Would you rather be a Cleric or a Warlock
Probably warlock, as I really like the class. And you could still be a healer if you go with the celestial patron.
Cleric. Easily
I shudder to think the conditions a pact would have on me
(Wait is this if I was the class or in game who I like playing more? Still cleric either way cuz I like the class more)
Probably Warlock for me
I'd assume zero conditions if this is purely mechanical. If we include all the thematics, a cleric might be just as "annoying" to be, considering all of the praying, offerings and religious texts that might be involved in it.
Personally I’d prefer not having to deal with whatever such a being would want from me than some devout worship
"Devout worship" has interesting incarnations depending on the deity.
(Considering a joke about marriage. Disclaimer: I love my wife deeply.)
Glad to see Mrs Smith is loved
I also love this guys wife /jk
valid choice
If we’re also talking about just mechanics, I like the ability to swap out my spells per long rest
Speaking of Warlocks
If the Warlock's patron died for whatever reason, does the Warlock themselves lose their power
I’d imagine not
Yeah, but Eyes of the Rune Keeper. Read all text!
depends on the DM
and the story behind the pact
Yeah that’s probably the best answer
I think for my games I’d rule not so, but I see arguments either way
It’s contentious enough that I’m fine with either
After all, there are no actual "lose power" mechanics behind any of the three "supplicant" classes (warlock, cleric and paladin), except for a fairly light-handed suggestion on paladin.
Yup. Flavour text in 2014 mostly had warlocks as seekers after magical secrets and the patrons as guides, not conduits for their powers.
I would probably rule that they would but id get them a chance to hook up with a new patron quick
chat what is a badass sounding a guy who made a secret society
Minsc of Rashemen
Marcus Fineblade.
i want to perfect my backstory
hmm
Is this a name or a name of an actual person
Player character? We have a channel: #character-discussion
i just need a name
Lucien Voss
we have the 20
Yay
If only I got these crits at the table…
I swear all the crits I’ve rolled are against ONE of my players
Do Google your names before you get your heart set on them.
good idea
If you're on android you can let Gemini know the vibes you're going for and like what kinda language group you want the names to come from and it'll give you a list of em
So you could be like "Give me a list of 20 northern European names that are unfamiliar but easy to pronounce" and it'll do that, and even give a guide to pronouncing them and their meaning
i dealt 40 dmg to the BBEG and my dm said SAID "he brushed it off"
the bbeg had 650 health

A player once did 20 damage and I described the hit as the person catching the battle axe in his bare hands, a few drops of blood dripping from the cold steel axehead, staining the white snow below with crimson splotches
They were level 2
They ran
LOL
HAHAHAHAHHAHA
can i show some parts of my backstory here
In #character-discussion yes
i wonder what's the reason why most cantrips are so limited when being learned
but any spell with a level is free to select and change (relatively speaking) for most characters
Themtically cantrips generally represent simple spells you have taken the effort to learn familiarize them well enough to the point that you can just freely cast them, or are something you can do innately due to your race or background
but since they're so simple, why aren't they allowable to be learned via scrolls i wonder?
what's the balance reason behind it?
one has to like... enchant an item to do the cantrip if someone wants an extra, like for example a light cantrip
I imagine it kinda like an accent. It’s something so natural to you you don’t have to put practice into it
I'd see Eldritch Blast scrolls being banned or limited across the board
But it’s kinda difficult to learn an accent to the point you don’t have to put effort into doing it
Wasn't there an optional feature in TCE that allowed wizards to change cantrips IIRC
Theres definitely one
I'd allow it.
yeah but if it's so simple, why are they so rare :v
why can't we learn more and have to rely on enchanted items that do them
Nothing says they are simple. They are only simple from a perspective of gameplay mechanics, and even then only in a way that they can be cast without spell slots
i see
I wonder how xanad felt when he developed some of the first power word spells
At least there's a stun in there.
I do find it quite funny how the dude who literally made power word kill had his fortress destroyed by like 30 hirelings
Although body was never found so I wonder if he will come back one day with the addition of new power word spells if WOTC ever want's to break that page open
unrelated topic, do you guys remember the very strange double ended weapons from ye ol' 3.5e? :v
imagine darth maul saber but medieval, and they can be axes or morningstars
i wonder how those can be flavored on 5e :v
What's it about?
Okay, what kind of feedback are you looking for?
Sure, message me.
First thoughts:
In character is neat. It demonstrates your creativity and desire for immersion, but it's only one part of your application.
What you're missing is who you are, what kind of expectations of play you have and why you want to play in the particular game on offer. What about the advert attracted you? What are you looking forward to that the DM has mentioned?
HEY YALL! Any recommendations for a legendary item that might help stun a being of particular power (coughavatarcough) and purple weapon recommendations? I am totally not losing my mind before session looking over all of our abilities. 8th-9th level spells recommendations appreciated too

Artifacts are also welcome if not incredibly insane, only problem is we can’t use wish
I do feel the need to ask, but is this AI generated by chance?
I would probably cut the second paragraph ("Since my youth...") and the fourth ("Grant me a place..."). You're still conveying your idea, but you free up some word count for yourself. Use it to tell the DM a bit about you and why you think their game will be great.
Is that you as a person, or is this for a specific character you wanna play? I ask because a lot of DMs will usually deny players if they come into a campaign with a predefined character in mind.
Amazing bit, just be careful the implications
Ah
Yeah okay so plenty of DMs dislike when players have a specific character before they’re accepted into a game
Just talk about yourself as a person
Good DMs will send you questionnaires anyhow
The time to come up with a character and talk to your DM about it is generally later than now
This is of course based off of mainly my experiences and the experiences of the people I play with
Other folks may vary
Some will ask for any characters you are wanting to play, overall, just have vague ideas about your characters, so that when you join changes can be made to accomodate the campaign and vibe of the party at hand.
I honestly never make a character until I join a campaign personally, because I like to make the character with the dm and have it fit in the world with more cohesion.
You ever get the feeling that your benevolence really got used against you?
No cuz this is a team game not a free for all
I was just trying to help a player get into a campaign because I related to how hard it was to find a genuine campaign
And a few weeks later, I think they're becoming a genuine problem player
That's not on you.
DM isn't online yet, but I'm bringing it up to them when he is. Talking here until then
Oh well yeah, I mean if they're only a problem player to you so far, it's not something worth worrying about. Idk what they have done but I'd recommend doing what you're gonna do, talk to the DM and the other players about them first.
We're here lending sobusaeoghan a hand and (just for example!) they could turn out to be an actual gremlin in live play.
Uhhh, it was to most of the party at this point
So, how are they a problem?
By any chance this isn't the Cleric right
Plus if they’re new you can always try and adjust their behaviour
In the campaign, it was 2 parts to it. The first was that they decided to just split off from the party and talk to horses that bandits owned, made the bright idea of convincing them to join us. Bandits did not approve, big fight, Druid almost dies, NPC we needed to escort almost gets kidnapped
And no, the Cleric was mostly away outside of sessions #3. This is the Druid
if a dm does private death save rolls
while using bend luck would i need to know the roll
Hasn’t the Druid played for a very long time?
Their enthusiasm is translating into "do own thing, chaos ensues" and ignoring the rest of the players.
No, you can just add it or subtract it (you demon) regardless of knowing the roll
Have a talk to them about not being disruptive, even if it might fit their character
(An aside: love your username!)
So the second one was me planning things like what to spend our gold on in the next town, but remembered that an NPC still had a chest that we avoided at the moment
But I decided to make a small deal with her and trade her chest for an ivory and silver hairbrush (had Paladin actually make the deal in case of checks: several points higher Chr than me)
(thank you!)
You roll it
(I fear the day when horizons start cascading)
Trade was successful, Druid immediately made a beeline for the chest and opened it. Got a 20 on the dice to determine the loot, which would have been amazing (mind you, the list of magic items we could get were including, but not limited to a bag of holding)
(Ahahaha, as you should!)
does ac matter in death saves?
Hello
Only to not be hit and autofail two
if an enemy. crits on me cuz im unconsious would i lose two death saves?
Yes
Instead of taking my advice to just take the option for what magic item it would be, Druid decides to keep rolling to determine what it would be with the flimsy excuse of "Counterpoint: I like rolling dice"
Flubs up the next dice rolls ans makes the loot much worse. It was some potion that gave a thunder damage resistance for 1 hour
But I couldn't even benefit from that either because Druid instantly drank the potion
and while im dead i am considered unconsious
Downed or dead
downed
Yes
Ah, that's very different than dead
i think when youre dead you are considered an object
Knock some sense into them. Tell them out of and in character that what they’re doing is disruptive. Communicate.
Downed is only mostly dead.
It's complicated, but yeah you're definitely no longer unconscious
Aside from that, Druid hasn't been actively disrupting the party, but has done little to actually help us
Out of the campaign, Druid made the reasoning that "I thought we learned by now that I'm not to be trusted with anything"
Then leave them to rot/hj
i say let the party play out
And there's a difference between mostly dead and all dead
like if the other players have issues
Fifty gold and a nice sandwich?
I say remind them that if they’re more pain than is worth, the party has no reason to keep them around.
im sure if he doesnt trust anyone
Princess' Bride reference
Oooo, which kind of sandwich
Pastrami with coleslaw and some sliced pickles.
id also say if he doesnt help enough
he hasnt done a "goal" or achivement
that he should get to level up
Yo, warrior
ayy
At this point, if the Druid does not want to be useful, nor are they making any attempts to be part of the party, they should probably be talked to by the DM if enough players find their playstyle disruptive and/or not cohesive. It sounds to me that they'd rather put their own enjoyment of doing whatever they want, over the joy of the party as a whole, which yes, is a red flag.
Hah! Yes. That can be a trouble.
De Vor you couldn't exactly trust, but she knew the party were the only ones preventing her from being burned as an evil witch. She made herself useful, repeatedly.
i say just dont let em level up xd
Is the undead warlocks transformation good as a 1 level dip on a wizard?
unless he has a goal to do for it
like it should make sense why he should level up
if he doesnt help the party it means he hasnt done enough to level up
it is diff if they do xp tho
That would be a crude and kind of boring way to punish them. I'd just say if they are not being a good player and are actively harming the experience of others with how they play, and don't respond to the request to be more cohesive with the party, they should be removed.
In the end, I've been playing D&D online for what, almost 7yrs now? And I couldn't count on my fingers and toes a dozen times over how many players I've met that just don't understand the basic consideration of others when playing in a campaign.
It is a game where we all come together to have fun, including the DM. Not a game where you just do what you think is fun and ignore the others.
I’d say, don’t punish out of game issues with in game solutions. The issue here is with the player
im not saying that he needs to help the party im saying he should have a goal he is reaching towards a goal that would align or not with the party
Has anyone brought it to light with the player
I was gonna say
this is also a big point
If it has been brought to light then theres not really much point in telling us more unless youre wanting advice on how to go about it
Stupid ahh dnd experience, session started with ordering french fries and ended with all party members traveling to gargantua
It be like that most of the time
Ah, classic DnD
ok ive read up on everything properly
i dont think the druid is that "bad"
rolling for which magic item is fine
him opening the chest is also a shitty thing to do but also ok people get excited in general
Its not necessarily a very bad thing but it is a slight annoyance to have a player that isnt actually playing but is just effectively a monkey that chooses to do things at random because they "like to roll math rocks"
This is also in game, though. Read what I said about the potion and horses
Especially when youre wanting to immerse yourself in the world and Gunk Butter is drinking vials of acid because the math rocks said so and its funny
I know
imma be honest tho rolling for loot is much more fun
than picking it yourself
so i can see why theyd do it
that’s an issue from the player’s (out of game) actions, not an in game issue.
- We are adults. Just because someone roleplays a chaotic goblin doesn't give them the excuse to be a jerk to all of us
but i cant excuse the drinking the potion immediately
- It isn't just rolling for loot that's the problem
that is actually bad cuz it is annoying the party is not too beneficial to him either
Because each of the chests we had earlier to get loot were giving us the equivalent of 500 gp or upwards of 1,600 gp in gemstones
Bloodline if it’s alright could you answer these two questions?
#dnd-discussion message
and
“was this mentioned before or after he created his character”
I'm a little confused
I had that one coming...
its one thing to do bad for yourself another to frick everyone over
What exactly needs to be answered?
basically he is asking
Has anyone brought it to light with the player?
So have you voiced this concern to the player?
did you complain to player or dm yet
I just had ptsd flashbacks of my parents saying “hi hungry, I’m mom” as a kid 😂
and did the dm know he was gonna be that kind of player
That they're being a nuisance?
Druid is self aware, Paladin and I spoke up about it on server
Probably not. Neither of us knew the Druid beforehand
ok did the dm know how he was gonna play that player
A DM should know roughly a character’s personality before a game
Read my next message
Us including the dm that doesnt make sense
why would you add a player you dont know
I... I was the one who invited them to the campaign
ohh
Usually you don’t have that right…
does the dm mind it?
plenty of folks add players in online games - its what lfg channels are for (unusual for a player to do)
You can suggest it, but the DM usually has the final say
you would still ask what kind of player he is
So technically you can’t invite a player most of the time
this is beside the point tho?
They explained they were looking for one because it's hard to find a campaign most times, which I related to quite a bit. I'm the kind of person who would help out someone like that because I would also want to be helped in that situation. Be the kind of change you want to see and all that
oh for sure
@remote wadi
I pointing them out to the DM and told DM about player looking. He took over from there
Oh then that’s normal
So the DM should’ve known the character was gonna be kinda like that?
From seeing how Druid joined the campaign and 2-3 people dipped, I wouldn't say he was against it
i meant like how he is acting not about you adding him
I recommend voicing again to the Druid that the party isn’t gonna keep a liability around and they should have a reason to actually support the party else risk being left behind.
And if that doesn’t do anything, talk to the DM
like if i was a dm id allow my players to recommend adding players
I didn't add druid to the campaign. I pointed them towards the dm and vice versa
Been there, done that. No responses yet
Then wait. Let’s see how things go
im asking has the dm ever said about how he finds how the druid like his opinion on 💀
His opinions on calcium?
uk what i meant xd(good joke tho)
The study of skeletal structures specialising on the cranium? /j
The message was unclear atm. But so far, it seemed to be a bit of casual fun with a figurative bump in the road. But with this behavior being repeated and the Druid trying to pick a fight with the Paladin, this is becoming something that needs confronted
Then I think you’ve done enough.
Just wait and see how things go. And start being stricter on them in game
i say travel along but be very disturstful of the druid like if you see him wander of keep a close eye that is if you dont want him removed
You’re a ranger with endearing strike, a Druid shouldn’t get far. You’re literally the hunter class, this is your specialty.
you can always leave him in a bad situation where he has to be nice to the party
or get some consequences
Eh…that’s a lil harsh. Maybe save his life and make him owe a blood debt or smt
more harsh than kicking him from party?
if he doesnt wanna be part of the party then dont let him
that is my stance
I can agree with that
I'm already struggling to enjoy the campaign as is. I don't need to add a neutral evil problem pkayer in the mix
For clarity, it's because most of my irl problems involve being stuck with problems outside of my control. Ironic that in campaign, most of my efforts towards solving said problems results in bad luck. That's the way it goes, but hard to see the silver lining in clouds on an overcast day, if you understand my metaphor
…what does that have to do with my message?
I mean you’ve done everything you can for the moment
Some things need time to settle
im saying you should stop babysitting and let him fend for himself
Because waiting around means chances of just tolerating more of this terrible behavior instead of acting on it
You have acted
Oh, you meant out of campaign more than in. Gotcha
you gave him a chance to help and he chose his fate
Yeah in campaign you should start doing smt. Hence “being stricter with them in game”
Is there a campaign i can join?
Anywho, I’m cutting into my sleep for this, imma go feed my bed mimic
Ted the bed mimic says good night
even netral evil when they have a party they have a reason to stick to it from what i hear he is barely a team player and at that point you shouldnt let him in
Thank you!
Several times at that, yeah. Part of me feels like such an idiot for indirectly making all this happen
its not you its him you just added a player who you thought would be a good fit you prob thought more players the better
That would be chaotic neutral. I get it's a rough estimate and that's how allignments go, but chaotic neutrals tend to be less involved with things and focus on themselves
Which is mostly what happens when they aren't screwing up the party, but when they do, they only care about their own amusement and pleasure
im saying he needs to have a reason to be a bad player and you guys should have a reason to keep him to leech off of you (in game)
tell him to just not follow the party and do things on his own
if he gets a good reason you should keep him then keep him
or you could go the easy way and just kick them'
@remote wadi
I said what I could
k have fun i hope you guys find a new druid
Ending it off with urging them to positively change their relationship with the party, one way or the other
That being either changing for good or leaving for good
id say it should make sense with the character if they do change
qeuston 2014 rule book players. where can i find info about drugs? several youtube videos talke about dnd drug items
_>
Are you still having trouble with your party? This has been going on for over a week
Well, not much else I can do. Swear, I really wish that my options in life weren't constantly crappy like they are/have been
Or is this a new party lol
any one knows about dnd drug items?
form what he wrote its a new party
Do you think a lich could be non evil?
I'm not familair with any kind of item considered a drug, so any talk you've seen was likely homebrew, or just general idea of drugs without mechanics
Party I've been with for almost 2 months. Most of them have improved with things like preparations and being more mindful about actions. Druid... not so much
videos are talking that its in the players handbook :/
Can you maybe link any of these videos?
Because only think I can imagine would be some kind of mention like use of pipeweed or something similar, but again there isn't any mention of a specific item or mechanics as far as I'm aware, so would have to check the video on what they are talking about
Bloodline, it seems like you are having a lot of issues with playing, and you complain very often about it. I think you may need to start reflecting on how you can have more fun in game.
Also, I think part of the issue is that dnd is a game where your party members are going to make bad choices, where you may roll abysmally, where people may ignore your advice and the other players might (probably won’t) play optimally if you are lucky.
Dnd does require at least a small amount of ‘just going with it.’
I hope you can have fun soon!
i pm you
The first video you linked, they do say they went through the PHB, but that is in reference to the races, not the drugs. They mean they went through PHB races to make drugs fit for the specific races. These are not actual drugs that exists in D&D
The second video literally gives the source for the drugs, and it isn't PHB but homebrew
Hello! My friends want to run a campaign (even though I've been nagging them for over 10 years about doing one). Anyway, they've chosen me as the most suitable GM. But I have no experience, and I'm looking for a campaign that's not too difficult so I can start with them. If you have any kits to understand everything or organize a campaign without experience, so they can have a great time and I can enjoy it too, I'd be very grateful. I'm looking for a kit with everything needed to prepare and play in the best conditions. Feel free to PM me
I think lost mines of phandelver is pretty great and the dmg, especially 2024 one is pretty useful, though these are only the things I've heard, not tested
Does it have everything inside?
Lmop is one of the starter set campaigns so it has the core rules, some character sheets and some dice in it's set, and the dmg has a ton of advice for gms
I'm not sure, you can look it up
Ok
i just got DND to play with my family today, we don’t know how to play it.
I’m the dragon master and i’m reading the first adventure ( the vanishing gnome ) i’ve spent 3 hours reading the first page and still only understand it the smallest bit.
we plan on playing tonight and i need help ASAP to help me understand how to play the game.
please DM me 🙏
DnD needs preparation tbh
Pick up and play is a bit difficult
anyone got any quick one shot campaigns going today? or even just a reg campaign?
teach them fake dnd
If you’re referring to the stranger things box set, there’s a beginners guide (basic free rules) that will explain everything. That will hopefully make the module make more sense to you.. there are also a couple QR codes in there that link to videos that explain/show you how to run the module 😊
best way to learn dnd is find a community server in my opinion
or campaigns
I found watching people play was really helpful
Is this like a major spoiler for that adventure?
i’m not sure what a major spoiler is i’m really new to D&D 😰
I havent played or looked into it so not sure.
Assuming people are genuinely interested in learning the game, teaching them the wrong way on purpose is poor form
But if it is, it's polite to spoiler text it so that people who want to play that game in future dont have it ruined for them.
there not a lot of recourses out there, youtube is no help, A.I is no help, the guides are quite complicated as i’ve never played it, so yeah.
ohhh sorry, i’ll delete it.
I haven’t run that adventure but it seems like those are extras that come in the kit.
That's the full list of creatures you need for the scenario. The adventure will tell you when each appears - oh, it's gone.
is it the first adventure?
no need to delete you can put a spoiler tag on it and it will hide the text and people that want to see it can click on it.
if you all don’t mind me asking how did you all learn?
Tokens typically refer to monster tokens which you would place on a battlemap, which the kit should provide. Otherwise it’s easy-ish to make your own maps
they gave me a play guide so i’m assuming their the rules, so i’ll read that, try and remember stuff, and then i’ll read the adventure booklet thing.
Reading the Basic Rules as well, the old version (2014) at least. The new version (2024) is much better organized
I learnt by watching people playing online (which takes quite a while to actually absorb the game from)
i’ve even tried downloading an app so i can basically play DND there and try and learn as we move, but apps don’t help.
realistically i shouldn’t be the DM because i haven’t watched stranger things to understand a lot of it, my family watched it and they can’t understand or work it out so they left it to me to work out.
I was just kinda thrust into the game lol and no one really knew the rules that well
You don’t really need to watch Stranger Things to get D&D
i know, it’s just the characters that are in it and some stuff are stranger things based and u have absolutely no clue.
anyways guys thanks for all your help i’m going to read the guide book, and then try and put the pieces together in my head.
Brings me back to my very first busted game made by an old friend of mine. Pretty much no rules were followed from the get go. I’m happy I went off and learned on my own how the game actually worked
i haven't kept up with stranger things but given that it takes place in the 80s the characters are almost certainly playing first edition, which was very different to the current edition.
The show’s presentation of the game as a collaborative storytelling game holds true back then (for the most part) and definitely still true in the modern era. But yeah the rules structure and philosophy is significantly different from 1e to 5e.
@remote moth I DM’d you
hmm after slaying a dragon hoarding its blood in vials and consume it 🙂
Thoughts on this for warforges Healing Machine. If the Mending spell is cast on you, you can spend a Hit Die, roll it, and regain a number of hit points equal to the roll plus your Constitution modifier (minimum of 1 hit point). In addition, your creator designed you to benefit from several spells that preserve life but that normally don't affect Constructs: Cure Wounds, Healing Word, Mass Cure Wounds, Mass Healing Word, and Spare the Dying.
That's just autognome?
So the healing machine is also biological?
Me and 2 other people need a dm we can do it online we never played before anyone wanna be our dm
Warforged have always been at least partially biological
If you want to use this server to find a group check out the instructions in #find-a-game !
Yea but i thought it was a good way for all constructs to heal
I think it’s fine personally
Half joking about this, but
Any advice for a player who has great ideas, but terrible luck?
Aside from the obvious
What was your introduction to D&D? How did you come to know of it?
The best ideas are the ones made with the awareness of your circumstances
I had heard of it and known it as a thing since forever, since it IS a very popular game and parodied and represented by people playing in various medias, but never had much interest due to not knowing what it was actually like beyond some dice and roleplay
Then one youtuber I sometimes listen to while drawing mentioned they joined a D&D game, so decided to listen to the game, and instantly loved the concept and here I am 😎
Asking because a good chunk of their plans are definitely noteworthy for a quick improvisation
But always seem to fall apart because of some consistently crappy rolls
They shouldn’t get too attached to plans in dnd
If the ideas are so great, sometimes a roll isnt even be needed tbh
Like, inagine carrying someone who attacked you away for questioning, but nat 1 on Athletics check, tripped, fell, and was captured
That's more or less how it goes, but it is getting harder and harder to believe that with every failed plan
Ofc he could then miss all his attacks but thats what the others are for
Are critical fails on skill checks a thing at your table?
The party did. He just got jumped by a few guards
They often are for most places
Try playing more of a spellcaster where you force saves rather than attack rolls?
I’d expect RAW to be the default at most tables, but if your table is ruling that crit fails on things other than attack rolls / death saves then I’d be looking at any/all ways to get advantage. Also play a Halfling
Person in question actually did try that with Ensnaring Strike. Currently 3 for 3 on enemies failing the initial save, then breaking out before anyone can benefit
Not all the best dnd characters are front line attackers
...Are you the person in question
Because I feel like I remember you talking about your ensnaring strikes and also very bad rolls
Are you playing with digital dice or physical dice?
The bad luck isn't just "uh oh. Nat 1s all the time". It's also oftentimes pure irony
As an example, crit fails on saves are also a thing in this campaign. In addition to breaking out next turn, they also get a crit fail on the save. Double damage, but 2 times 0 is still 0
Oh yikes
So knowing their luck, they will still fail miserably, it just will be a nat 2 instead of a nat 1
Alright this game seems like they just want Halfling Divination Wizards
They unfortunately are too late and chose Human Ranger. Thus the crit fails on Ensnaring Strike
I’m assuming this person is you? Have you brought up these concerns with your DM?
Anyone happen to know the easiest way to acquire some quality 2D map assets for terrain such as traps, chests ,scenery.
I've searched Etsy and come up with limited results, looked at ,making my own but most free PNG sites suck.
Is there somewhere i can get a lot of good ones in bulk?
Yes. I prefer to speak about this as if it was just some person vs me
And he knows about the situations, but both of us know it's just how DnD is. Or in my case, is far more when in cased where it should be if
I wouldn’t say this is how D&D is considering most of your problems seem to stem from your DM’s homebrew rules
Even worse, I'm proficient and soon to be an expert in lockpicking and couldn't pass the check to save my life. DM recommends I let fighter try the lock (reasons being that he could pick the lock as effectively as I could thanks to being a Shadar Kai Rune Knight. But despite both being a +7 modifer, people still agreed to let him pick the lock because he simply has better luck than I do)
I'm saying DnD just being a dice game where bull crap rolls are fair play (for the most part)
I’ll ask again, are you using physical dice or digital dice?
Digital
Ah I was gonna suggest testing your dice for imbalances if they were physical
But yeah sometimes you are just unlucky. Plus people tend to remember bad experiences more than good ones, especially when it happens when you really don’t want it to
Its definitely 70% homebrew rules (nerfs the hell out of Ranger and Warlock??) 30% bad luck (all while not taking every possible measure to improve your chances)
Nope. Although if I ever do play DnD in person, I should be having a cool dice set in a stopwatch arriving eventually
I reiterate that it seems like your problems are almost entirely due to your DM’s style of running the game
Even in your Fighter example if the DM wanted to spotlight you they should’ve let you take 10 on the roll
Well, not entirely. I did contribute towards taking out the guy commanding the guard (albeit not nearly the same damage as 2 Divine Smites), so I wasn't exactly helpless (even with only 2 shortswords)
The annoying part is that I ironically have to forgo both alert and poisoner this early just to get Lucky... only to have relatively average luck now
Well yes I'm sure even with all those nerfs Ranger isn't objectively the worst class and even if it is, the nerfs aren't at a level where it means you're dead weight
Honestly even in your Ensnaring Strike example getting 3 enemies to fail the save and having others get them out is still good. You made the enemy side waste 3 actions they could’ve otherwise spent attacking
Well, yeah. I'm not helpless, just held back from me being a genuinely unlucky person
The more recent example was that he did still break out near instantly. It wasn't intentional, but I did manage to salvage this bad luck by keeping our Paladin barely alive
Because before I applied the Ensnaring Strike, I rolled a Nat 1 on an attack, which meant enemy used reaction to OA me and hit pretty hard
But that means that by the time Paladin's turn came up, the guy we were facing could not attack Paladin at all. Gave her a turn to LOH herself for 15 HP and safely retreat
Bloodline, this is another example of what a few of us have been saying. Quite a lot of your complaints seem to be following the format:
“I got unlucky with my roll, causing my DM’s homebrew rule to punish me”
The rule itself wasn't exactly the most bothersome. Oftentimes because rules like those are something that we also benefit from
Still, I think the rulings are the root cause of your strife. If it works for everyone else that’s fine, but it seems you’d benefit greatly from moving to another table
Whew the paladin gameplay goes hard. Knew i made the right decision
I was more annoyed at barely making it out of that with the Paladin and me conscious
And then me getting screwed over pretty badly for the Short rest healing. We both have d10 +2 for hit dice, but me spending 3 resulted in only 15 HP restored, while her spending all 5 resulted in 44
When you have an evil plot to have a bbeg craft a simulacrum of the party's cleric/paladin.
Muhahahaha
To be perfectly clear, the rules aren't too bothersome for me. If anything, the 2 things that easily upset me the most are the Druid being a problem player sometimes (taking necessary steps for that)
And me having good ideas and playing mindfully, but getting smacked around a lot by some bad rolls
Quick question, did they somehow change dragons in 2024?
Haven't checked out the dragon stat block in a bit.
They have some different mechanics yes, but are largely more or less the same
In case you missed it, they're a mild inconvenience, but one i can live with. Other problems in campaign to worry about
I wish I had some friends man
Yeah the biggest difference is that they all have some degree of spellcasting now whereas spellcasting was optional on dragons in 2014
So awesome concept, just remember you need the original creature that's being copied, to be within 10ft of the caster for 12 hours.
How does an advantage and disadvantage affect eachother?
any amounts of advantage and disadvantage will cancel out.
1 advantage and 1 disadvantage: roll normally
2 advantage and 2 disadvantage: roll normally
100 advantage and 1 disadvantage: roll normally
1 advantage and 100 disadvantage: roll normally
Thank you
getting advantage when u have disadvantage is so lit for negating it
Or giving disadvantage when they have advantage
yuuup ur seeing the vision
I was asking because I wanted to give someone disadvantage while I use wreckless attack
Wait, you can have multiple advantage and multiple disadvantage?
You can have multiple sources providing them, but they don't stack; they only cancel, as knome said.
yeah but that also doesn't do anything special
yeah for example lets say you are blinded (dis) and prone (dis) while you are attacking someone, but that person is restrained (adv). the final result is a normal role of one die.
if you're Flanking an enemy under the effects of Guiding Bolt and Faerie Fire, you don't roll 4 dice. You just roll with Advantage
(flanking being an optional rule for 2014 and might do nothing in many games)
It can result in some weird interaction. Like if an enemy is in the range of your ranged attack's long range giving you disadvantage, you can cats fog cloud or darkness on yourself to block both of your vision, and now make the attack as a normal roll, somehow shooting better at a distant target you cnanot even see anymore, since they also cannot see you 😛
this also might be house ruled at many tables
yeah, i dont run with flanking
I run with flanking but they get a +2. So if an ally has something like friendly fire or something to give advantage, it doesn't take away their spell, feature, or ability.
I run mine as a homebrew rule, where a creature flanking the enemy can use its reaction to give advantage to the attacker 😛
Guys im so happy im gonna start running Curse Of strahd soon
Eyy good luck! 😎
Ight guys I'm about to try these Hot Ones Noodles there gonna Rock!! 🔥 ‼️
ahh so hype, Games booked from here straight through to Groundhogs day
Does anyone have some recommendations for additional magical secrets picks for a pacificist Lore Bard (no direct damage, inadvertant damage or assisting someone elses damage is fine)
Currently I am hovering on Counterspell and Find Greater Steed (at 7)
Counterspell is a great one, find greater steed may be way more situational than it for sure
Counterspell is really solid
yeah thats the one im most unsure of, counterspell seems and obvious choice with jack of all trades
I was thinking of incorporating a griffon companion as I can have it grapple enemies and use it for manouvering
personally I've always loved Leomund's Tiny Hut
I have seen so much love for that spell, can you give me some use cases?
Safe long resting. That's it.
yeah you are in the wilderniss or even a dungeon, and you can just take your long rest without worry
Safe ish, dispel magic can end it
well, "safe". I've always liked the interpretation that there's no floor to the dome, so Burrowing enemies can still mess you up
2024 version also cant block any spell above lv 3
It can also block entrances
we are using 2014 so thats fine
as of 2024 the wording specifcally dosnt allow that
the spell definetely loses some safety in hier tiers
but like from level 5-10 its god tier in most scenarios
its mostly just ensuring you can safely take your long rest in dangerous areas or places you might get jumped in the night by monsters
I need a spell for the gap from 6 to 7 at least and it does look fun, might give it a go
also extreme environments
the problem with our group is we all have ptsd from poorly timed long rests / short rests and people getting killed as a result 😂
or places you cant afford to make a campfire
spawn-a-tent is sweet
Counterspell is REALLY good, I then took Polymorph I'm pretty sure
Me busting out Galder's Swag Tower not carring if it's spotted
As a fellow lore bard, I have to warn you before it's too late, DON'T pick too many concentration spells
We cannot swap out our prepared spells like other magic casters (unless we level up)
poly I had on my bard and somehow managed to get it to work the one time I used it but I do understand that the best use cases are usually the big bads and they frequently seem to have pretty decent wisdom annoyingly
it is a VERY funny spell though
I turn my party members into great apes
The human fighter enjoys it
I have had similar advice given already and appreciate it, I think the big ones im going to maintain early on are slow and hypnotic pattern, ive got stuff like mirror image and see invisibility to cover non concentration utility as well
now this I did not try lol
Oh yeah Hypnotic Pattern is good
Mirror image is my go to, personally
Pretty good for rp and combat
I have suggestion prepared but still trying to find the best uses for it
Oh I have command instead of suggestion
I have command as well which is so much more broken than I think people give it credit
Could always just have the bbeg be part of an escort mission the players have to succeed in.
i assure you we all understand how good Command is. it's restricted to a few classes for good reason
my DM didnt :D
Command is lowkey broken
"a giant minotaur attacks the party when everyone is low health"
"no shoo go away"
"... you are out of combat."
the main thing about command is how good it upcasts
What's your dump stat, Oversal?
that's not what that does actually they only get ordered to spend 1 turn leaving
thats way more than one word
Suggestion would let you tell them to go away completely
and also the effect ends after one turn, yeah
true to the class i was being dramatic, I just used flee
Yea and they flee for 1 turn. they can still turn back around
I am moderately new to dnd as a whole I dont know what a dump stat is, I can find it for you though :D
Your lowest stat
in this particular case as we were running away from it and hiding and it was spending its turn running the opposite direction, dm was happy for it to be out of initiative with a good stealth check
I dumped strength personally, I have 10 strength and 20 charisma
strength 8
What's gen asking the best way for a newb to get into D&D?
the stat u care about least
usually its Strength or Intelligence for most adventurers
Personal experience
There's no best!
If you know someone who plays and can show you the ropes, great. But if not, the rules are freely available, and you can find games online all over.
Really? There's online D&D games?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

roll20
we have been using it for a few years, decent platform, there are others I assume
It's the main way to play for most
yeah many places to find them. A lot of online dnd is over discord these days, with many big community servers or personal servers
#find-a-game or roll20.net, or /lfg on reddit
Me and a bunch of friends jumped into the deep end and started a campaign together way back when.
There are a bunch of fun little one shots you can do to give people a chance to experience some aspects of the game and roleplaying as a whole without getting too indepth, I would recommend "Everyone is John" for player agency and decision concequences
We had a lot of fun with it

How viable is a pistol for an endgame weapon?
depend of the setting of the campaign
If its a flintlock pistol in a medieval world i think its not soo much
A small crossbow would kinda do the same, a longbow or heavy crossbow too
Any weapon can be viable, generally. The weapons are simply different types. What's gonna matter more is what kind of magic weapon your weapon is, as mundane weapons are probably not gonna cut it at later levels
the only thing it would be an upgrade is +1 ammo or make the weapon be repetitive shoot so you dont worry about loading
OH, thank you
Truly a 0_0 moment, hello, friend.
It's Bladesong compatible
Bladesong but instead it's Glocksong
hello. only played i think 5th edition
Hello :>
5th Edition has been my only D&D experience lol
i only really play 5e but I've dabbled in 3.5
For TTRPGS, I've played
Call of Cthulu, Pathfinder/Starfinder 2e, Mutants & Masterminds, Monster of the Week and of course, D&D 5e lol
Monster of the Week was pretty fun, I played a Swamp Ghost fella named Bog and was one of few Monsters in a paranormal investigation unit
My main thing was phasing through walls to investigate ahead of the party lmao
5e, 3.5, LANCER, Mutants and Masterminds, Cyberpunk Red, Monster of the Week, Kids on Bikes... I think thats it for me
Ive never played dnd before but just thought about trying it is it fun?
It's pretty fun
its the most fun you can have with your mind
I like my mind
I thought for the pistol a rogue with dual wielding and martial mastery. A schimitar in one hand and a pistol in the other
Fighter wouldn't need the martial mastery but eh
Hmmm, your mind must be put through a taste test, I'm gonna go fetch the local Illithid/Mindflayer
Okay, D&D beyond i pissing me off. Because it says rage increases damage per level in barbarian, but it won't tell by how much, it just tells me that I need to find the table.
"you gain a bonus to the damage that increases as you gain levels as a Barbarian, as shown in the Rage Damage column of the Barbarian Features table." And it even says it in the book, WHERE IS THE TABLE!
its in the Barbarian class page, both the DDB Barbarian page and the Barbarian section in the Player's Handbook
it goes from +2 to +4 as you level
Link to Barbarian class table that lists it: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#BarbarianClassFeatures
I thank you so much
I have been losing my mind for the past half hour
D&D reminds me of stick of truth x'D... Also i beat both games though...
How do I make a character/character sheet?
you buy it... Shrugs
either in PDF or in DnD beyond
No, you don't "buy" it, there are free tools online
I don't think I've ever heard of someone paying for a character sheet, aside from printing it
You slay the nearest tree and loot it for paper, clearly
wait do they have to roll for it?
cutting the nearest tree to loot it for paper
yeah, probably athletics
Hold on
Class, species, background. Start with the Basic Rules, pick what you like and head over to #character-discussion
Does an 11 pass for athletics?
... no
I'm not looking up the CR of a Tree
I made one in roll20 but if you don't know what you're doing it can seem pretty overwhelming. I got my first actual character sheet from a hosted game and I've used it to make 2 more with a pencil+pen and ruler
DnD Beyond imo is more beginner friendly
I think using pencil and paper is very beginner friendly
And is still as confusing as looking at the book and putting the numbers
Just with less pencil smudges
Nope, it's pretty straightforward, especially with the beginner text feature
I also, keep beginners to basic classes. Any more and it seems to overwhelm them.
wait what is the brutial D&D editon was it the 2nd edition?
I want to get newbies into the game, not panic about all the rules
still new to table top dnd
5e can be brutal, but 1e was known for a lot of character deaths
I have been wanting to look into bloodhunter
Swashbuckler was removed right?
ahh.. it sounds like a great class
can theif still be used in 5th edition?
So you don't know?
Yeah
I haven't looked into it. It is a ranger like class or subclass?
I call the entire class Thief.
Well from what my sister is doing, I would say it is closer to a warlock, but it is its own class
ah ok
Does WOTC have a mage/cleric class? not multi class
there is a cleric class
I have seen talk of the Theurge class from Kobold Press. I haven't looked into it yet.
nah u gotta be one or the other
Nope.
Closest you got is subclasses like Celestial Warlock, Divine Soul Sorcerer and Arcana Domain Cleric
Knowledge domain cleric, arcana domain cleric.
Divine soul sorcery
Is there a reason you want a mix of both of those?
Also from what I know a celestial warlock would not be able to do most of the things a cleric can do
Artificer gets spells from all over, I think Bard does as well. Thats kinda like what u mean
Eh Artificer lacks the flavor and mechanics of Divine + Arcane magics
Maybe you're looking for Paladin
That misses the Arcane stuff too and leans way more martial so I doubt it
I wanted to compare a class to the Theurge that Kobold Press just put out. Then choose which one I want in my game
Bard is probably the closest since its purposefully a full caster that dips into multiple types of magic
that's why bards are the best
Eh bard is mid.
The Theurge pulls from Cleric and arcane spell lists
Lore Bard is fun
stake my heart next why don't you 💔
I play games in all tiers of play more often and yeah tier 3 and 4 Bards suffer hard as enemies say no to most of their spell list
are you seeing this chat?
that's why you gotta commit to support first
A lot of enemies negate Bard support, have high saves and magic resistance or even immunity to the conditions they inflict.
The answer of course is that by tier 3 and 4, and this is true of all classes, your spells should primarily not be cast at the enemies.
Yeah but other classes like Druid, Wizard, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Cleric still have a lot more options to get past those issues.
would monk/rouge be good multiclass or nah
You wouldn’t benefit much besides skills.
Because Sneak attack requires specific weapons, not unarmed strikes, and their cunning action only brings a bonus action hide.
No real benefit. The two classes are too close to each other and their playstyle is rather opposed.
Maaaybe weapon masteries?
the idea in my head sounded cool
But yeah it isn’t a lot
alrighty
The weapon masteries and the sneak damage are good but they're not worth the effort of multiclassing
Sneak Attack. Expertise. Martial Arts. Small synergies here and there
Now a neat Multiclass you could try is Ranger with Monk or Rogue
For spellcasting, skills, languages, weapons masteries, a fighting style, and an expertise
Since they have similarities but don’t have as much redundancies
And of course usually share the same stats
I abhor multi classing. I know, I am in the minority in this thought.
Nah you’re right
Multiclassing is usually just bad most of the time anyways. abilities scale linearly by that specific class level rather than total (cantrips aside)
Yeah I’d way rather just take a feats that is like semi “double dip”
Like Eldritch Adept for invocations or Metamagic Adept for a couple Metamagic options
I like the subclasses that are basically free Multiclassing
Like Eldritch Knight and Divine Soul Sorcerers.
Gloomstalker my beloved
They get you to a close enough flavor and work with your primary class.
Hi ppl, just joined
Welcome.
Gloomstalker for like 5 levels and then a multiclass in rogue is nasty
Zephyr Strike -> Dread Ambusher + Favored Foe can do like 41 damage at level 3
Eh
I just realized
I forgot that I get the modifier for all 4 beams on my Eldritch blast
Ive been thinking it was a +5 total this whole time when its actually a +20 cuz its 4, +5's

I allow multi classing if it makes sense story wise.
The thing i like about multiclassing is that part of the reason it exists is because it explicitly is meant to be able to ignore the ""class stories""
Ex: Mechanically a warlock but not a warlock in terms of story whatsoever. Just a manifestation of (insert other class here) abilities
I don't like it because people want to take something to get around limitations. Which I think is a cop out
Its not a limitation though? Its also one of the explicit purposes of multiclassing. Im not sure how doing something that is suggested is getting around anything
It's pretty decent. Playing one in my buddy's campaign
I think the part that I dislike the most about it is that most spellcasting classes are structured in a way that following their mechanics while multiclassing ends up with a very odd expression of a character.
If only Extra Attack were worded differently to say, so they could stack with each other
They actively have the Multiclass rules say “no you can’t stack them”
so the fighter can get extra attack (3) at lv 17 instead of 20? (i think that should be when they get it anyways)
So not even wording, it’s just hMulticlassing rules.
Like, if you multiclass Cleric and Druid, you don't actually get away from the Cleric and Druid mechanics within the story, because you need a different focus depending on the spells you cast. If the goal is to merge them into a sort of hybrid, it doesn't really work.
Over time, I've slowly gravitated away from having a very positive view of multiclassing for reasons like that.
In terms of designing stuff for DnD I heard it’s a pain too.
People trying to make fun classes only to hear “this breaks when you Multiclass”
It's a bit of a pain, admittedly, yeah.
MCDM said that was pretty central reason why they didn't include multiclassing rules in Draw Steel, actually. The headache from 5e's multiclassing rules linger.
I'd've preferred if Cantrips were tied to the class & its class level that obtained them than a character level.
Though there's definitely solutions to multiclassing being overtuned, with moving away from PB being a big one.
Didn't think about MCing when making my take on a Gunslinger
I'm doing a passion project rework of a lot of the stuff with 5e and curbing multiclassing but still allowing it was a pretty big goal, though I'm finding myself trying to decide if I even want to enable it. When I started, it was a definite yes, but it's fallen quite a bit.
2024 did a good job curbing Multiclassing
It did
I largely ignore MCing for the most part
I like to mc for optimization, but when it comes to flavor and how the character behaves it can be a very hard thing to pull off
I don't get to play enough for MCing to really appeal to me.
Monk sorc is rather easy, but not optimized. Go drag on both and it is realistic
Probably the largest reason I think disallowing multiclassing can be good for the active game is that it can really reduce a player's focus on actually playing along with in-story events, instead having them focus on building their character.
Are epic boons even worth it if you get high enough level?
Yes
I've tossed around an idea where many feats are simplified and a category of feats are added that are basically meant to fill the previous gap of story-based multiclassing.
I like class-lite feats
I played a Vanguard / Bulwark in a one shot. It seems pretty cool
Very few get to that level though
Agreed
yeah
Goal being that events in the story are what cause you to be able to take something like Fey Touched.
We've been playing for over a year in this campaign and the characters just reached lvl 5
I have one campaign I'm in that will get us to lv 20. So I'm not sure what to do with my aaracokra drunken monk
Weekly or monthly game?
sobriety? I am just kidding
Very much so
I've not played a true monk. Always mced it
Every two weeks, but I want the players to have fun with new abilities before they get more.
plus, there is a lot of Role playing and side quests from my full on adhd group. I just run with it.
Ahh I have a campaign that just hit level 5, session 10 is tonight
Rp and side quests still lead to charicter progression in my games
I will run whole campaign books in 25 go 35 sessions usually
guys, i have a question about tritons in dnd5e.
can they survive abyssal levels of sea pressure? just asking to make sure my character concept is lore accurate
Sea pressure isn't considered.
As DnD doesn't care about physics.
@w@
Abyssal sea pressure is considered in 2 campaign books for 5e
Oh really? Huh
Tritons have a Swim Speed and are therefore unimpeded by the Deep Water Environmental Effect
as is evident with fall damage
rip, out goes my character concept, i have to think up of a new one TTwTT
Deep Water
Swimming through deep water (more than 100 feet deep) presents additional challenges because of the water’s pressure and cold temperature. After each hour of swimming in deep water, a creature that lacks a Swim Speed must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or gain 1 Exhaustion level.
Oh right forgot about deep water rules.
oh but by that ruling, triton CAN survive abyssal levels of pressure
yes
cuz they have a swim speed
10d6 damage per minute in extreme pressure unless you can counter act it
yeah thats what I said earlier
Yeah, it's pretty funny
I'd honestly assume that Triton live deep in the oceans anyway tbh
Triton that suffers from deep-sea gigantism...
Thoughts? 🧐
rip, i have to entirely rethink my character's backstory hahaha XD
I had a concept of a triton warlock explorer who's pact and dream in life is to just explore the surface world, so you could probably see him in the middle of a desert or something and he's looking enthused.
but the backstory i wanted for him is that he always wanted to be an explorer like his ancestor from 1000yrs ago, who was known in the local area for mapping a lot of the nearby abyssal sea levels on his submarine. so when that sub was found he stole it from his dad (who wanted to sell it) but since it was unmaintained for 1k years, it gave up on him and he sank to the bottom. he met his patron there, an ancient sea dragon, who heard him out about his dream in life to be an explorer before he thought he would die, but they established a chill, mutually agreeable pact of the sea dragon giving my triton his warlock powers and all he has to do is explore the surface world, something he always wanted. so he was teleported out of the sinking sub and he's been having a blast since.
buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut now i need to think up of something new if triton can 100% be fine in the abyssal layer of the sea. they would have no need for a sub except for maybe combat or something.
Critical Role: Call of the Netherfeep also presents these underwater rules.
Water Pressure
The Netherdeep is a supernatural abyss, and the water pressure it exerts on creatures within it is beyond anything most mortals can survive. Creatures not native to the Netherdeep take 35 (10d6) force damage at the end of every minute they spend within the Netherdeep...
this is critical role though... is this still official dnd rules?
so like the mariana trench is killing a pc
Oh yeah, my Centaur barbarian is totally native to netherdeep, trust
yes
Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep is an official 5e adventure
but are triton technically native to netherdeep if their true homeworld is the elemental plane of water? would they be considered exempt?
no, but the netherdeep is just super far underwater
this sets a precedent that deep trenches can be worse than Deep Water
but let's put it this way. say you're a DM, would you be fine or not be fine with a triton going about merilly in the abyssal layers of the ocean without any assistance from anything else?
so as far as I remeber, liches bind their soul to an inanimate object, but does the object have to be inanimate or can it be living?
would you crush even tritons with sea pressure or are they chill with it?
has to be an object and not a creature (and specifically, it has to be an object that can contain something). a living object is probably a creature
how "believable" would it be to your settings if tritons needed subs for ease of exploration and sea defense against shit like krakens or giant turtles?
this is in an offical campaign book published by wizards of the coast, the call of the netherdeep
ye prolly
ah I see, could a lich bind their soul to an object like a locket or something like that?
yes
sea tanks, like the Aparatise of kwalish
To be fair, if we are using real world as an example, most creatures don't go down into the deep and the ones that live in the deep don't usually come up towards the surface.
yeah so i need to rework and refine my character's backstory on how he met an ancient sea dragon who have him his warlock powers
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
huh, but this is still terrestrial made. would a triton actually need this?
maybe the dragon just used telepathy? Your character for what ever reason was reaching out with his mind for more power or whatever and the dragon responded
that sounds a tiny bit simple... but then again that's how wyll got his powers...
idk... @w@
or the dragon protected him as he brought him through the netherdeep
Correct
whatever is in your world that is the equivalent
well what IS the equivalent of that in forgotten realms but the elemental plane of water itself :v
and even then that sounds like a triton's literal natural playground
I GM in Midgard or the Southlands to be specific, by Kobold Press
no idea, haven't looked at a FR book in many years
the leviathans lair under the moonshae islands
so i'd have to change his patron from an ancient sea dragon to leviathan (not that i'm complaining)
i hope more dms start using 2024
I love 2024
Be that change and DM some 2024 games.
I've been running it pretty exclusively since it came out
We are all in this together and all that.
Same, I immediately had a character idea when i read the new faerun book but it´s been surprisingly hard to find a campaign for it.
I know right
I switched to Tales of the Valiant on the rules.
so what i can think of changing is
he found his ancestor's sea chariot or something, which can move on its own and was used to help map and secure the abyssal area around moonshae
it was found by triton archeologists, given to his dad but the dad wanted to sell it. he stole it to try and follow his ancestor's footsteps and it failed on him
he was rescued by a leviathan and given warlock powers because it was curious about the surface world
does this sound relatively passable for most DMs in forgortten realms?
You can still do a dragon, just talk to your GM
This works too.
im not complaining about the creature per se, a whole lot more so about how he found his patron and got his warlock powers
i CAN make it as simple as him wishing and being heard by an unfatholmable patron but... idk that sounds a tiny bit more basic 😛
it's almost the case of wyll where he wished he could help and a demon came to him out of nowhere. but that's just me
Had to look up the name, but this is BG3 inspired? nothing wrong with it, just curious
ye bg3 wyll
A lot of people think ||mizora used an illusion of tiamat to trick wyll into signing the contract|| (wyll spoilers), could also be some cool inspo
im not closed to the idea of someone just wishing for warlock powers and getting it but i just prefer them having better and more direct circumstances for my own warlock meeting his patron @w@
cuz it also establishes why he even got his pact and why he and his patron like each other: they have a mutual curiosity for the surface world that they don't normally get to know about. the patron only gave him powers mostly out of curiosity than anything malicious, cuz he piqued patron's interest
I also had a peaceful patron along these lines
I like it a lot more than the usual evil patron causing trouble, though that can be cool too
my issue with the evil patron route is that usually warlocks don't fully want to be in the pact. they're under pressure and duress from the patron. that and as famous as that kind of pact is, it's a bit too overused imho.
i have some small feeling that there aren't too many warlocks there that love the pact they're in. but that's jsut me, cuz ofc all pact stuff is directly literally DM dependent, since they ARE the patron.
i just wanted to explore the idea of a warlock having a pact that he doesn't worry about cuz it aligns with his goals, and failure would not mean severe consequences like being turned into a lemure
My celestial warlock patron just being a solar who wants my guy to help people whenever possible
Seems like a good story line
anyway, thank you for the input guys 😄
my warlock's backstory is now relatively more believable
Hey so I need someone to talk to me and maybe give me suggestions on this universe I’m creating
It’s more of a mythos but I want to expand and play with it and make new stories by role playing with people
Well next week, the party Im in has to fight a Mummy Lord. Make or Break time i guess
i would like a patron that is like giga chill and its the kind of bro who say
"hey, no balls that you fight that owlbear" sort of thing
How did you meet up with a patron like that? In a party.
turns out that guy you were drinking beer until no more and both with some friends went to swim to a lake, was an entity having a good time and for that he give you some powers
I wanna do the same but every time I use the entity’s full power (Hecate being the one I have in mind) I get more manic
A teleporting merchant that no matter what plane of existence the party is on, always seems to somehow be near exactly where they're going
First, it seems like a coincidence, but then the planar travel starts, then the party realizes the merchant is a high level wizard that's taken a liking to them throughout their buisness
Let’s hope u don’t get a nat 1 and end up in the shadow realm 💀
"sir, you are following my husband to anywhere?"
Lady, your husband is paying my kids university
Random question, I know there's a mechanic like "when you miss with an attack your location isn't revealed" or something along those lines, but I can't remember what gets it?
Skulker feat
Cheers! 😎
Pretty good for Rogues, or really, any ranged build that likes hiding
yee, working on some homebrew weapons and was thinking of similar mechanic, and wnated to make sure im not overstepping on like a direct class ability or something 😛
Eh, you're fine, there's a Cloak that allows you to Hide and Disengage and stuff of that matter as a bonus action and it's literally called "Rogues Mantle"
Correction, I've mistaken Rogues Mantle for something else lol
Haha fair
Mainly I just want any overlap to be intentional, or be on stuff not usually on a class that uses a specific weapon 😛
"Move in Shadows. While you are in dim light or darkness, you can use a bonus action to teleport, along with anything you are wearing or carrying, up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see that is also in dim light or darkness. You then have advantage on the first melee attack you make before the end of the turn."
You see, I'm a bit silly :p
What I'm thinking of is Nature's Mantle:
"This cloak shifts color and texture to blend with the terrain surrounding you. While wearing the cloak, you can use it as a spellcasting focus for your druid and ranger spells.
While you are in an area that is lightly obscured, you can Hide as a bonus action even if you are being directly observed."
And it has a prerequisite
Idk where to ask for help with coming up with a nickname for a dnd character, long story short the goddess of the abyss and my current character are the same but I need a nickname for the goddess so it is easier to differentiate the two
Abby for the goddess
What’s your native language if you have any besides English. I’d use the abyss/darkness version of that word
her dark magesty the lady of infinit torment and pain
All my char names are just bengali words lol
i sometimes just mix words or use some names from characters i liked
That is the nickname for the divinity of the abyss
Lilith?
Then go with that. Or just say Abby bc it’s funny
Or Lily
Harood (hard wood), Verso (character from expedition 33), Mirakle (a character that would be some rare race)
then you need one for the character or the goddes?
I need a nickname for the goddess
The divinity and the goddess are two seperate beings
Like the current name is Lazuli and I would want the nickname to be somewhat related to it
Liz
oooh, okey okey
ERmm.... Abby is the divinity
Both are about some place dark
Lucy, it can be related to Lucifer.
the idea, not the character.
The abyss is where dead gods turn into demons and goddess Lazulis job is to make sure these demons don’t all escape to the material planes
Also my native language is swedish
Time to find what abyss is in Swedish. Ez name
Zeritome
I just made it up out of nowhere kinda starting the name iwth hte sound like Cerberus
That does not sound like Cerberus
I gotta agree
Cer be rus
ze ri to me
the starter of the name with the sound Cer
its okey
It sounds like Ze to me bc yk… that’s how it’s spelled
Ah yes, ”Avgrund” sounds so good
It sounds like off ground which I ain’t the biggest fan off though the translation of darkness to ”mörkret” is interesting I am not sure if I would want to use it
I am a little picky sadly enough
VRchat do you play
Keep experimenting and you don’t have to use the word one for one. I’d try diff words and then alter the one you like most to match more
This is the first time I’ve ever seen a white role send a message in this server
Historical moment for sure
Yooo
Mr smith is white too
Yeah, I just am not that creative with nicknames creation so I can’t exactly decide
Do you guys play VRchat
This is a dnd server big bro. But I don’t no
Would be a project making a whole game into DND, i think Dark and Darker had a VR version. Im not sure
Really
I will like to meet new people and hang out with them
welp, think that the VR is a platform that have few games, options and lot of people tend to feel dizzy using it. Isnt cheap too and you need space and a good connection//system. Now, if you grab the engine that was used for Half Life Alyx and find ways to adapt it, i think you can make a DnD game without problem
Lolz 🥳
What do you specialize on
Bad idea: dnd haptic suit
Haptic suit?
Yes
I’m afraid I’m not familiar
Like ones used for vr
in what?
I mean what do you do on yr free moment
A haptic suit allows you to feel the pain from getting hit in a vr game
So yes its a bad idea
Hm…
FIREBALL
play games, cook, exercise.
get stuff ready for selling
DnD?
I mean those suits dont cause real pain
Do you guys play VRchat on pc or quest
like a fireball would make the suite slightly warmer maybe? not sure how advanced that tech actually is
true, but you get the sensation at least, a tickle or something like that
Its also variable
You can turn up the settings i belive
nice, put it can stab you irl and then experience how your character is gutted ali.... nvm, not so good idea
It would kill your clients
Feels like a lawsuit
cigarettes exist so...
Is this normal for me to roll a 14 and fail a con saving check against being stunned?
Are you a furry guys
At what level?
in any way, a suit like that would be another thing
Still, for me, expensive for the few options in a VR
I'm level 5
No.
No just a normal guy who threw concussion grenade
Seems like smt you should pick up at a later date, a DC 15+ stun is hella strong
But a concussion grenade in dnd ain’t normal either, so we’ve entered homebrew territory
I'm a light domain cleric if this helps lol
Not really.
Okay
Just checking on this cause sitting and doing nothing for like 20 minutes is crazy
20 minutes irl or in game???
Also yeah stun sucks for a player
Irl lol
I got into my first dnd campaign, I am so excited to actually start🥹
I chose to be a tabaxi hehe guys
Ooooo what class
It's a party of six so honestly twenty minutes is a blessing
I have to be a medic since theyre missing one.. idk what class is that but a medic
Cleric mayhaps?
Options~
I'll ask properly the dm, but I made myself a panther tabaxi heheeha
Celestial Warlock, New Banneret Fighter
I am just happy i got into my first dnd ever
there was a sublcass warlock that access to heals too
Usually in games referred to as healers
Though in D&D they don't have as big of a role as other rpgs tend to, so you don't have to have one in a party
Mentioned it, Celestial Warlock
Clerics and paladins are awesome medics if you want like a full caster you can go cleric, paladin is sort of a half caster personally cleric is better imo for pure damage and healing output
Celestial Warlock by itself isn't typically enough to function as a parties healer, alas
Just enough to help, but not enough to be the primary healer unless you get plenty of Short Rests
better than nothing ngl
and this spell from paladin or cleric, prayer of healing was buffed in 2024 if im not wrong
10 minutes 1 spell slot for a whole short rest benefit and i think a lil heal too
It is indeed
Good thing they just direclty made it 1 time per long rest//day
Still having a bulky Paladin being a frontline or being in the middle of the path of the enemies help a lot.
I am in a party with no frontline and they got 2 of 4 in that party at half hp in less of 2 rounds
My favorite thing about DND is thinking I can do something then being bombarded by info from my party on why I can't do that
If ya can’t do it, ya can’t do it
Or watching my girlfriend be stunned for over 45 minutes
She's been stunned for six turns
She literally started the campaign with us got stunned and hasn't been doing anything for six turns
In the future
It's the dm, my gf has bardic inspo and bless added to her roll +2 from con and got a high roll of 17 but still hasn't gotten out
The save is like 18 or 19 I think
Lmao I want to at this point
Apparently our enemies have guns and concussion grenades
How many of yall are stunned?
It's me and her I got out last round and immediately had to use my turn to heal which I don't mind since I'm cleric but neither of us have even attacked
How many enemies?
One of my party members did 46 damage including fire damage roll and the enemy is still alive
Three that we've been fighting for forty minutes
Have any of you tried grappling them? Ranged weapons get disadvantage and they risk stunning their own ally.
Assuming someone can get close. Got a monk?
Yeah we tried I think but it failed
I'm not ranged but I'm gonna try scorching ray
When at first you don’t succeed-
Wait I can't dang
A monk has 4 attempts at grappling. At least one should work
If not, everyone else has 2
We have a fighter, two clerics, two bards and something else lol
Have the bards casted anything like Hypnotic Pattern or any kind of CC?
Yall either need to come to them or bring them to you
Or run
No lmao they've been just attacking and occasionally inspo
Well tbf my gf is one of the bards so we have one technically seeing as she is stunlocked into oblivion
So it seems my DM lives psychological warfare
Can the other bard bardic inspo her?
And someone Bless her?
She has bless and inspo
I made a build that can have 23 AC and he said he found a creature that can ignore it and has a natural AC of 5. I keep trying to figure it out
It's not working cause the giant roll needed to break stun
None of the clerics nor the other bard has bless?
Im currently blessing her
The other bard is blessing the other half of the party
