Subclasses are what determine certain features at certain levels, think about it like how your character plays as a barbarian
Relentless Endurance is difficult to make useful if you're low HP against a foe that attacks multiple times, on the plus side, it can save you from being downed and killed immediately sometimes
You mean orc. There are no half orcs anymore
let me guess, in 2024 such thing like half orc dont exist anymore?
they got errataed out recently along with most of the half-species or something iirc
Yep, but still is a "maybe" save that is more than you can ask in some situations
And is more than enough to flip everything over in lots of others
damn what happened? too op?
No.. uh.. people didn't like how Half-Species were represented in D&D because of Racial undertones.
They don’t have their own species features, I believe it was recommended to pick one or the other for half species
That too
You can still play an Orc and be a half-orc anyway
damn, yeah. I think that my Half orc mother that is a gladiator and my half orc dad that is a guard will be just a fantasy...welp, a shame
Yeah half species are in a weird place. In base play, the player specific options have been removed going forward. In the Realms, some of them are being just overwritten to being fully one or the other. i.e. Half-elves are becoming full elves etc.
And then in Eberron a Half-elves species option with a unique name is now available.
TW: ||Another problem with Half Orcs is that in lore they were typically a product of assault||
but even elfs? weird, orcs okey, they tend to be more violent and other many stuff that i cant say and we know why
Elf why?
Like, those arent htat aggressive
That was much older lore that has been retconned for quite a while to my knowledge
Its like WotC has yet to decide fully what to do with them and so we have their haphazard implementation.
But some people still think of that ofc
Oh word? That's good.
Horrible that it was still lore at all to begin with though
Casters have attack roll spells
yep, was told this in his moment, in any way. My mother is the orc and my father the bold strong human that made her mother
I mean, it was still in 5e 2014
melee attacks, unless using melee attacks spells that idk if it count
Ah i thought it was all attacks
Casters rely on attack rolls a lot less than martials
na, would be too op with range//spell attacks
Melee spell attacks exist
Having evil things is fine, just not palatable to a number of people
I mean, I kinda like species feats, but I also get why its a problem. I do think that 2024's approach of doing origin/general feat but tying them to an organization is nice. RE: dragonborn taking dragon cult feats. I think its a good middle ground to take for this kind of thing. You make the feats and just don't make them tied to species specifically.
I PUNCH you with magic!!!!
All depends on audience and expectations
but rely in enemy Dc savings, so is kinda the same thing at the end of the day
Sure there are, nothing has been erased from 5e, just new options added
Yeah, but some things just shouldn't be involved, especially considering the general audience this game is aimed towards is PG - PG-13
But there are other issues with trying to mechanise mixed species- And it's been a dilemma since the start.
Give set stats to one particular heritage, but you can't make stats for every single possibility. And even among the statted species, like Human-Elf mixed individuals they're not all going to be the same. Some might take after one parent more than the other.
And then what happens when they have kids? You going to stat for that too, or make weird worldbuilding rules why kid's of mixed heritage invidiuals end up being 'full' Y/X or so on.
The pg thing is absolutely true, i forget that all the time
Well going forward, half-orcs are not in the PHB. Revision or not. If your table does not allow 2014 rules because you are 2024 and beyond, you have to use flavor to play a half-orc.
in my head the cannon is, orcs are aggressive. But if you show you are strong they accept you.
But adult entertainment can have dark themes. Thats not wrong, just dark
seeking spell and advantage
Actually it's aimed at 15 and older. It's in the preface of every book
What you mean i cant make my half minotaur and half siren that got both human sides of each one and can breath under water and is strong like a bull?
how does it work
Gygax seemed reluctant to even include human/orc and human/elf stats in the game, according to one Dragon article. Went on to say that really, any mix should be possible in fantasy, but sod trying to stat all that- and he also felt players wanting to play such mixed species were just trying to powergame >.>
He is from land, she is from the sea but even from being from different places, their love made it possible she could walk and him could swim.
how advantage work you mean?
(That article and the following ones weren't.. the best.)
Fun fact,The Original Sirens were from the sky!
(In folklore)
would i reroll one dice or the attack roll
is powergaming really that bad lol
Personally I love all of the decoupling of stats, and species, I do feel there was a better way to do "Half Species" than removing them from then just PHB to allow Mixed people some representation within the rules set. But hey, I am not a designer.
Those are called Harpies
They're still Sirens!
Have the same functionality of luring someone to their demise.
That's what a siren Is!
in theory, you roll 2 dices and use the highest, you can roll 1 dice and then roll the next and will have to use the highest.
lets say i roll with advantage, i get a 20 and a 10
I have to use the 20 for the attack
But but but
If you were in disadvantage you are using the lowest number, in this scenario, the 10
I liked the UA approach. It was flawed in parts, but I still felt it did better acknowledging the possibility and then giving over how to handle it to players. Want to play a dwarf/elf invidiual? Cool. Pick dwarf or elf as your species, flavour how you like, have your PC identify as they wish.
Custom origin in late '14 worked similarily.
so my father was dating a bird instead of a fish?
Damn....
Up to you, both are still completely valid for Sirens lol
Yea just the blanket removal feels like an over correction that can cut the wrong way. Like I had a player who is a mixed person feel really salty with some half elves just being full elves now in the new FR Book.
I feel like there was a way to handle it other than, they don't exist anymore.
I too like the UA approach.
I think we should take the Simic Hybrid approach, have a few traits to choose from during level up (maybe at each feat level)
i like the fishy idea mostly, make it more poetic and epic.
i wish most flavor text were 1-to-1 with mechanics, it doesn't feel as satisfying
can i use rapier and dagger as a dual wield without the dual wielder feat ? because if i get it using 2 rapiers seems better
"now suddenly, all of them dissipated, thanos style"
what are you of class?
rogue
Reminded me of a social blunder during the 4e days. The dark skinned Mulhorandi people who practice slavery, because they were enslaved for thousands of years get reconquered by the people who enslaved them the last time.
But this time those conquerors are very pale skinned and they outlaw slavery. Because its barbaric.
I think a lover from the sky could be equally as poetic
"I can fly freely as I please, but choose to stay grounded for you, my dear"
...
Could also be viewed as a toxic relationship 😭
They also cited not having a culture as being part of the reason of removal. Which is strange, even in settings outside of Eberron they still have themes of being stuck between worlds to my knowledge.
Yes, you can and can use your bonus action for an extra attack but wont have any bonus, will be only weapon damage.
At that point i would better go a little crossbow instead so you have both capacities
Yeah...
TBH, a lack of something seems like the best place for new writers to shine. Instead of blanket removal
so is that a yes or no
Please go vote for my cat
No
im surprised the bot didnt took it down
none, isnt a reroll
is throwing one more dice and having to use the highest
A reroll would be an inspiration
Please, delete it before you get into big problems. No one wnat to click a random link and get into troubles.
Even if your intentions are totally 100% good, we are in a street and we cant accept candies from strangers
I swear on all that is holy it's just the link to vote for my cat on worlds cutest pet
There's no link?
yoooooooooo
Again, in a street and we cant accept candies from strangers
Even if it is
Halloween?
what is up
Please we are in second place
you are going with your parents to your neighborhood houses
even in that there is people that put razor blades in apples or other really bad things.
Oh yeah, just wanted to share this so you don't think I'm bonkers
Because Harpies and Sirens are two different things and both bird people in Greek mythology
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siren_(mythology)
Clouds, stars, helium. A thrown child
I'm a huge Greek mythology nerd
I thought sirens were like evil mermaids?
In some depictions, but they were bird people that lured sailors to their demise
a thrown child fair enough man what a first impression
boot that mf
What no
into da stratosphereeeeeee
Why
idk u said it
neat
Oh I thought you ment boot me
Mermaids and Sirens aren't the same thing, but culture can often get misconstrued when a message isn't clear enough
What about harpies and wyverns?
It's nothing anyone did wrong, but it is a fun conversation point
I thought of sirens as, like, imagine when sailors see birds for the first time, and expect to run into land, they go charging in, and run ashore, wrecking their boat, and end up dying because they were so excited over finding land. Thus "sirens"
Wyverns, from my understanding, are Draconic creatures, but instead of being four legged are actually two legged and have wing-like arms
Would it be mean of me if I made poison ivy golems for my players to try and fight
how would poison ivy golems even work?
Probably so!
But, it's also because of sickness and Probably deterioration of one's mental state for being at sea for too long
Oh simple it would be a earth golem with a lot of over growth
Sirens being in different sizes, shapes and more is something i would like to see.
A normal siren would look like a common fish
A polar siren would be a bit more fatty for temperature and survival
Some would be smaller, faster and act in swarms
Some sirens would be like piranhas
etc, etc,
I think the best answer we should have, is if sirens should be fish or birbs?
BOTH. They should be winged fish people!
Can a casual party of three Level 12 characters defeat the Soulmonger, Atropal, and Acerak in Tomb of Annihilation?
flying sirens like those fishes too
Its a fish if it sings and is in air that's no longer a siren that's a harpy
they can certianly try, i have done it with 4 and 5 player groups before
how casual? Are they in sandles and shorts? On vaycay?
Sirens have history being bird women.
Yes ^
Oh hi! lol
Even Baulders Gate 3 has Sirens (as in the bird folk)
Hello
They are pretty casual, one is definitely on vacation. The others like to experiment with optimization but aren't really leaning into it.
I don't exactly trust D&D to be good with naming and historical/mythological accuracy. "Gorgon" = petrified breath bull?
D&D is kinda decent with it, in all surprisingness
Fish Iconography for sirens is made up for the medieval period where artists didn't care about source material. Lol
Same with Vikings and horned helmets
the last time i did it was a party of 5, but they rolled 3d6 in order for stats with random race and backrounds too, when it comes down to it level 12 players are powerful, if they have some of the good loot from the dungeon they have a good shot
Besides, I honestly feel that mythological accuracy is less important in this day and age than what's floating around in pop culture. I'd sooner take anime as inspiration than accurate accounts of european myhtology
I think Cultural accuracy is still pretty important...
Howdy
I like stories having their own spin on things rather than trying to be faithful recreations.
Because... Mythology is still a part of people's cultures and were things that were genuinely believed (sometimes) in so should be treated with respect
fire ball
Does anyone have a spare place in their party?
I will say, that is.. a take.
I have never played D&D anyone have tips to get into it? I kinda know what it’s about but that’s very limited knowledge

I respect your opinion but disagree completely
Absolutely not, the DM has to sandbag to give the players an inkling of a chance
As for Gorgons being bulls
That is not a DnD invention
Eh, its personal experience. More players have had trouble adjusting to accuracy than they have with jokes and ideas pulled from the shows they watch and interact with. That's been my experience. They want something closer to LotR elves than they do with actual Nordic elves. Modern fantasy has become its own mythology, much like cthulhu mythos is its own modern invention
Bull like beasts being called Gorgon goes back at least to Edward Topsell 1607 zoological text, The Historie of Foure Footed Beasts.
I go along with pretty well anything, I’m just not sure where to start cause all I know is Wizards cast fireball and bards are always trying to seduce something or someone
oh it was actually 4 that did it in my hardcore game, brain problems, i recorded it too
The creators of D&D are nerds.
You gotta expect them to do some research
vivid halucinations are fine too
That too!
Did Gygax get it from that book? Probably not. A monster called the gorgon with a metal bull appeared in Marvel comics less than 10 years prior to DnD.
bards are overrated. Its the paladins seducing things you gotta watch out for. Dragons to ride, demonesses to woo...
Ah ok
Who said I was wooing female demons?
Who said demons had gender
Demons can identify with a gender!
So how would I find what class would suit me best?
They can front as any gender (or not) as they wish
By playing whatever you want.
"what is in your pantS?"
Chaos!!
practice. lots of practice.
being a social construct, anything can have gender, should it choose to do so.
Experience and with the right DM
Idk why but paladin is just drawing me to it and I know nothing about them
I'm sending 5 Death Clerics of Baphomet to your current location
I thought you said Death Clerics of Bahamut there for a mintue, and was all like, uhhh
Do it I'll send them all back in a bag of holding
linguistically gender can also be forcibly applied to objects unable to do so, like ships or French nouns
I get them mixed up too, I'm married to them /joking
Is it bad a song got me to actually start looking into D&D?
Why would that be bad.
Idk
What song
nope, any way in is fine
You know... that Fizban guy sure does glaze Bahamut a lot.. I wonder why.. 🤔
Fireball by One shot bards
Fizban's kinda mid, Bahamut's better
Common Dragonlance L
Idk but I have one of his canarys
Fizban and Bahamut are Secretly dating, clearly
I too date my alter ego
yea, you could invent a language with one set of pronouns per noun referred to and discard the illusion of gender entirely, and that'd be really cool, but afaik hasn't happened yet
He's just like me, for real...
Literally!
He's me!!!
Doubt. You dont have five golden birbs around you.
Which class has the most chance to cause absolute chaos?
Yuh huh.
Fizbans is legally distinct Gandalf.
Elminster is Gandalf if he found a computer with Reddit open on it.
Elminster, The Redditor Wizard
without getting caught? rogue
disregarding stealth in favor of terrorism? wizard
I prefer my legally distinct Raistlins
I’m probably going wizard then
I'd say Wild Magic Sorcerer with a Wand of Wonder.
Wild Magic Sorcerer.
Take the new FR book chaos feats too
just don't forget, d6 HP means if you do get caught they will murder you
(DMs hate this one neat trick - )
Every artist has their own style and their prices are different. Prices often depend on the complexity of the work.
Players hate this one DM trick
"Nah."
I honestly don't understand the wild magic hate.
Whimsy dislikers.
One of my first 2014 charcters was a halfling chaos sorcerer who went all in on the luck stuff
For the new players lurking in the chat. Please never never create a pure lol random chaos character without talking to your DM and other players first.
Indeed
got a card deck of illusions as my focus
i mean me fr i just like precision and guarantee in my warfare but i understand people who think they Rico Rodriguez
Those types of characters have a bad reputation not because the options are bad. But because people don't communicate.
I'm a wild magic lover, I even suggest rolling the wild magic table if someone counterspells a Counterspell
We're just talking about it as something for fun
I know :>
Your DM counterspells counterspell.
I counterspell revivify.
We are not the same.
i do both!
I'd counterspell a Mass Cure Wounds in a heartbeat
I'd love to see your character
Thank god for the 2024 counterspell being almost entirely negated by res:con
my DM never deploys casters :(
I once counter spelled a realm shift
sadly its been too long, but it wasn't anything special. All in on Charisma, halfling, Luck-based feats and a gambling addiction.
Subtle counterspell
It's still incredibly strong, just less punishing for players while still being super punishing for Monsters because Monsters don't use spell slots.
People don't realize that it's a buff FOR the players.
I once dropped a caster in an Anti magic Field that was flanked by a wall of force.
i once dropped a clould of daggers and then forcecage
"Michael! Michael don't leave me here! Michael!! MICHAEL! HELP ME-"
New Counterspell is bad people when I counterspell then and then they realize they get to keep their Spellslot when Monsters don't
It's also still countering the spell!
Still will always live the high of the Bad guy offering to cast Haste on a party member. Party member accepting it. Only for the bad guy to immediately drop Haste.
Was the field something environmental?
No. Party was facing a group of Red Wizards.
Especially if it’s a once per day cast for the monster, you’ve functionally removed that spell from play
I like having counterspell on level 11+ warlock. I cast Forcecage! DM counters! I counterspell your counterspell!
probably less likely to work but cast Mage Armor on one of them to weaken their AC
Oh I remember when my dm dropped my PCs in a anti magic field forgetting I built one to be a glass cannon and the other to be a wall of meat
Player was so excited to get hasted and then immediately laid their head down
This is why players need to come up with counters to DM shenanigans
My most favorite Caster moments were
My Bladesinger Wizard negating a 70+ Damage crit completely
And
My War Cleric killing a Lich twice in one combat encounter lmao
Silvery barbs or shield spell to negate the crit? Or something else
In 5e, I mainly prefer half-casters and warlock.
No, Damage negation.
I put players in a combat arena with a crit fisher.
When the boss Gladiator stepped out in full plate party was super excited.
First crit.
"So that armor is made of Adamantine."
Shield spell doesnt matter for crits
Basically what happened was I was playing du'kurn and grognar du'kurn is a drow warlock and grognar is a orc barbarian the anti magic field made grognar happy because his boss couldn't steal his kills
He had Tashas Otherworldly Guise up, which made him immune to necrotic damage which was most of the critical damage..
Then he spent a spellslot for song of defense to completely get rid of the non-necrotic damage
Ahhhh, I can only imagine how the dm felt after that 🤣
A guest person was playing that monster because it was related to their old character in the campaign lol
They have to flip the DM a middle finger as a treat lol with that happening
How did the War Cleric part happen?
And then in retaliation I casted Power Word Kill 💀
I used Silvery barbs on a player once. They took it more personally than the bad guys using Healing spells on themselves.
I’m guessing bonk twice lol
The Lich was a Flee Mortals! Lich and they have a thing where when their physical body dies, they can force wisdom saves and make someone touch the Phylactry and absorb half their hit points and respawn.
Oh
The fighter failed the saves and big ol' Karkas had to save the day 🔥 lmao
It was a Double Sunbeam from my war Cleric and a Simulacrum of his Diety, The Doombringer (the simulacrum flavored by the dm lol)
Does Dread Ambusher give you an extra attack or is it like you can do one or the other?
I can't remember if it's a bonus action
No, it was complete annihilation
Tbh, I was hoping for bonk twice, that’d be pretty humiliating for a lich to die to
He had beef with that Lich because it killed the squadron that was under his watch...
And you don't mess with the guy whos deities main portfolio is vengeance.
I mean I one shot a litch once
It’s an extra attack right after your first one
I was listening to a 5e podcast and the gloomstalker was like "I use Zephyr strike bonus action to give me advantage, I have my favored foe, and i use dread ambusher for a second attack"
In my defense the dm told me a 20 would crit with spells
BRO I've been using that shit WRONG
that's awesome
Honestly respectable. Someone has to mess with him or hes gonna lose his faith
Earlier he had used an Unarmed Strike to finish off a Mummy Lord if that makes you feel better.
He literally dropped his weapon to do it
Not all heroes wear skin
They do just doesn't have to be there own
Yes, it’s just an extra attack as part of the attack action on your first turn of combat
YESSSS
The war cleric we all aspire to be
Does it take a spell slot ? I've been using this completely wrong
The War Cleric was a Tiefling Fellow named Karkas, he's the only Tiefling character I've had and will ever have lol
Oh epic first turn
That makes more sense
That's why i haven't been using it
Zephyr strike would, the gloomstalker ability for an extra attack does not
Honestly fair
Ty
Tieflings are fun but not for me
The extra attack from the ability also adds a 1d8 to the dmg, and you don’t have to target the same creature as the first attack
He was straight VIOLENCE.
he was the only Frontliner in that party but had 7 damage resistances and didn't mind running through your fireballs to kick your ass
Hi guys I’m sorry to barge into this conversation but do u know a place where I can find a dm im new to dnd and stuff and was looking for one!
And while it’s only on the first turn, it does stack with extra attack at level 5, so you will get 3 attacks on your first turn of combat at level 5
I want to do this, but with a forge cleric ngl
Okay thank u!!
Love the natsu pfp
Natsu, my ideal caster fantasy for draconic sorcerers
Right him or gajeel
He'll definitely always be one of the most badass and legendary characters I've played, I might have him as an NPC Old man in my campaign if I ever make one lol
Thank u he’s like one of my fav characters in fairytale🥹✌️
Honestly fair I prefer the stripper
Nastu is like a fighter/sorcerer multiclass
Unlimited heroics through the power of friendship (tireless reveller)
2 levels for unarmed fighting style and action surge, sorcerer the rest of the way for dragon spells
But knowing Karkas, he'd probably rather die fighting than become an old man lmao, Most War Clerics are probably like that
Tbf none of them are pure sorcerer
Bonkers
And Lucy is a warlock
I’d assume so, honestly I’d expect a good number of of species to have war clerics (orcs for example)
that doesn't narrow it down.
Makarov is a rune knight fighter lol
Tieflings also make sense because they tend to seek honor or glory believe it or not
True, dunno who else really comes to mind (maybe Dragonborn to some degree)
I think it'd be funny to see a Halfling War Cleric
Oh, dwarves can probably be war clerics, depending on their preferred job
Anyone can frankly be any Cleric 🧐
The ones who prefer fighting to smithing likely could be war clerics
Iced shell
True, there are particular ones that are a bit out there
I wish I encountered more Cleric players in my games lol
Gray fullbuster is his name
I’ll play a cleric if you have a spot open, I’m kind of enjoying my light cleric
No, I mean, im a player lmao
I meant in games that I'm in
Ohhh, like npc’s
No, as in fellow players
Forge cleric
I don't play Cleric often, but when I do, they're typically heavily armored lads with spirit to match lol
That’s what I meant, I’d join as a fellow player ez
The best flavor wise, but artificer is actually better at making things
If it’s a Sunday campaign, I can be there at literally any time
The Clerics I still have on my list are Order, Forge, Tempest, Life and Death (ones that interest me)
I've played
Trickery, War, Twilight, Grave and.. something else? I think?
Time to play a light cleric
KNOWLEDGE, my Knowledge Cleric, how could I forget, I'm currently playing him in a campaign!!!
I'm not playing in a campaign rn, but he's one of my active characters lol
Knowledge is even better in 2024
That's the version I'm playing lol
But nature clerics get plant growth and plant growth is the best spell in the game

Nature, Arcana and Light Clerics just don't interest me all that much
Ohhhhhh thx
But knowledge clerics get free spells, and free is better
All Clerics get free spells.
I only like light cleric because I’m a sorcerer player, so being a blaster is always fun
Or are you talking free castings of spells?
That yes
I'm not a big fireball fan, so that's where light Clerics fall off for me
See I really don't run instantaneous damaging spells so I forget how quickly people burn through spellslots
I'm not a fireball fan because I like my violence to be more personal
Frankly? Not worth it
Until you remember tempest clerics get max damage for lighting 3 times a day
Until you remember that you're gonna need at minimum 3 levels in Cleric, 13 wisdom, lose spell progression ... etc.
I'd rather just go full Sorcerer or full Cleric 😭
2024 Cleric is pretty damn strong tbh.
Does the thief subclass of the rogue rely on the setting/dm to make it reliable? Like how if they dont give magic items, part of their fast hands ability becomes useless? 2024 btw
I mean, most dms are gonna give out magic items, i wouldn't say it's dm reliant at all to be useful
Sounds like you hate the fact multiclassing isnt as easy to do and abuse lol
fast hands for items is great too
Fair point
Tbf, as a cleric I don’t intend to spam them, but if my dm decides to group the massive horde of zombies a little too close together…
Nope I switched from 3.5 to 5e and not gonna learn another new system
I rarely multi class
It's not a new system though lmao
It lets you don or doff a shield as a bonus action at least
Just an update and some quality of life changes for players and DMS
That's what the gestalt ruleset is for c:
And spirit guardians already goes a long way, as down radiance of the dawn
If I’m being honest, fireball isn’t even the best spell light clerics get
Also use Caltrops, Ball Bearings, other tools that typically require an action to use lol
Caltrops are actually insanely useful
speaking of, the UA for spirit bard is Rather interesting in that it's built around a cleric spell
I like the idea of a storyteller bard, and a fortune teller bard. Its just... if you're gonna do the fortune teller... where's my divinations? Its a bit weird to be a tarot reader that cant do actual tarot readings
they have like clairvoyance and scrying and stuff don't they?
yeah, scy, clairvoyance, and sending are all bard spells
you scry with water bowls and mirrors, not cards. The point of those spells is to get aliteral view of another place. You can't do that with cards.
Lore Bard feels very thematic here
lore bard feels thematic for?
What you’re describing
Ah, was talking about Spirit bard with the latter, since their entire gig is being a tarot reader with their cards-as-focus thing
could work with the former, I suppose, though that was the original idea behind the Moonshae bard that got abandoned
Find the path too
, That one at least can use cards
find the path is better~
hi i am new in dnd what i have to buy for start plang
you can play completely with the free basic rules
Read the information in #learn-to-play as well as the 'Playing the Game' and 'Character Creation' chapters in the free basic rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024) following along with the instructions in the second chapter to create a character as practice.
You can use (https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder) to make your first character as it comes pre-loaded with the free rules and will help walk you through the process as you follow along with 'Character Creation'. If you'd instead prefer a printable character sheet, those can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/resources/1779-d-d-character-sheets#OfficialCharacterSheets
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers, and have your practice character looked over in #character-discussion to ensure your character follows proper character creation protocol.
There's a short interactive module here (https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en) to get an idea of the sorts of things you might encounter in gameplay, or you could seek out videos online of live gameplay examples or things of that nature.
Once you're ready, you can head over to #find-a-game to look for a group to join or can look on one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, your friendly local game store, or anywhere else games can be found.
aughhhhh, i feel like a moron. i stuttered SO much improvising my narration the first time i tried to do that...
Wassup
I think stuttering is a really common speech difference folks have. I don't have direct experience with it, but I"m sure there are resources online that can help with various strategies! ✌️
it's not my native language and i assure you i'd be super elaborate while improvising in turkish
alas, i overestimated my english speaking skills
Oh, simply teach your players to speak Turkish! 😉
"okay so cast comprehend languages (press the mic button on google translate)"
But yeah, I had a DM who struggled with English. His mother tongue is Vietnamese.
He was just up front about it and asked for patience and we were all fine with it.
i'm normally pretty fluent, i just can't understand how i fumbled so much while put on the stage
Best wishes for the future
i guess it's one of those things that come with time and experience with narrating
Im sure youll get better and better soon enough
Do you ever actually spend time in english?
Or is it just fluency in a practice sense
i live in a foreign country where english is spoken, i receive an education in english
i speak to my friends in english just fine all the time, must've been some stage fright or lack of experience with narrating in particular.
it is its own skill seperate from just speaking, but it is so much harder even if you have narrating experience in your own language
Yup dm nerves
What's that got to do with me?
Everything
Boo, how we doin today
AHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHH (I’ve been spooked)
I want you guys to rate my Campaign idea. It’s a meta-fantasy campaign where the Main Villian realises he’s in a game so he starts changing the game and its rules. Even altering the player’s character sheets.
He also can bend reality using narrative
Sounds like it could work!
That said, if I was a player and the main villain changed my sheet, hmm, I dunno. That might be fun, but it also might feel kind of bad. Like obviously my characters is my own - so if it suddenly changes, it kind of feels like I don't really have that much control in the game anyways.
Interesting, though the immediate question is why doesn’t he just kill them instantly, though that might just be the nerd part of me talking
I don't think I'd like it if the villain made changes to my sheet
Nah, that sort of meta game creates a lot of problems, keep the rules of the game constant and tell a story in your world j would say
Fair enough. Thanks for the rating!
that can be a lot of fun! I wouldn't spring it whole cloth on the players though
Lol I just now saw a post where someone decided on a campaign where the party finds out the Common language is actually a virus.
Is this server moderated by WotC or is it community driven? I ask because I am trying to reach out for support for a local gaming convention I started. Does anyone know if there are programs that might help us out?
We are owned and operated by Wizards of the Coast
You personally?
I am a contractor paid to moderate this server ran by Wizards of the Coast. Have you considered running Adventurers League games for your convention?
I had to make that joke... it sounded ominous
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

WOTC doesn't do slavery lol
I have thought about it but we are all amateur GMs. Doesn't AL have rules about that?
Folks in #adventurers-league can help get you started on that and I believe AL offers official convention support.
I have a few other publishers sending me "Con-Kits" includes some posters, printed game modules, stickers... that kind of stuff.
Although there's also Legends of Grayhawk (LOG) for in-person conventions but that's a bit more closed right now.
ok thanks... I can try over there.
AL is a great program for smaller conventions and bigger ones too!. A vastly over looked tool that needs more support and featuring on places like DND beyond.
while terrible that's unrelated
i need a little input from players rather than DMs here - but what makes travel in your games feel like travel to you? how do your DMs run travel and what about it is good, and what isn't?
My first game the DM would use weather and random encounters to make travel feel fun.
Prety much my same suggestions for more survival oriented play
mainly:
- make random encounter tables
- don't bring the party to the immediate area of whatever objective, and have them need to look around a bit to find it
- add chase sequences
- add tracking quests, encounters,
- hide things along the path for ther party to potentially find if they poke around
- add obstacles like rivers that have overflowed their banks, weather, hazards, etc
- use the Extreme heat/cold rules
- Roll for weather every day and have that matter if they're going to be outside; perhaps have it impact the disposition of NPCs
- make slightly longer, more survival oriented treks where the party needs to move through less developed areas and have to find/conserve food/resources
- actually keep track of rations/water/feed and have the druid/ranger burn slots on goodberry and create/destroy water if that's the plan
- encourage the use of pack animals if they have to travel far
Even just a few things like this in the right spots really helps highlight your more nature oriented classes and also gives the whole party something interesting to tackle rather than a cut to black
would they roll on the spot for them and just go with it? and how did they narrate the in-betweens? i assume "today was rainy, and you are attacked by goblins" wasn't everything?
They'd roll on the spot, they'd narrate us traveling, the weather a bit and then encounter
Can't wait until my Monday game hits Winter so I can kill them with cold rules
sorry for necroposting but I just saw this
guidance does stack, here's how:
Player A casts guidance on player C
Player B casts guidance on player C
Now because of combining magical effects, guidance from player A is suppressed
Player C uses guidance from player B, and now guidance from player A is active again due to guidance from player B ending, so the first guidance can now be used
In 2014, guidance ends when you roll the d4, so the stacking is done automatically for you. In 2024, it's weirder because the casters need to drop concentration after you use the d4.
my main reason for asking is i've tried both ends of travel (rolling+narration, and straight up narration), but i feel like i never get it right. it never feels like travel to my players and i need to know what to improve on
the weather rolling sounds quite interesting
as well as this list, so tysm
Weather and Natural events are pretty big for exploration
since combining magical effects only applies to effects while their durations overlap, you can stack effects without overlapping durations, which allows for guidance, resistance, ray of frost, ceremony, and synaptic static stacking
It's such a small thing that is so, incredibly narritively and mechanically impactful
On the travel question... in my sandbox campaign where we play a one shot four hour game everyweek, I have a world map with locations I measure on inch hex. Each hex is a day of travel. Each day of travel get's a role from a table of random events that I made up. (40% combat encounters, 30% World building informational, 20% red herrings, and 10% stumble across extra resources) I didn't think of it but adding weather events would be good.
like it being foggy or heavily rainy giving everyone lightly obscured for instance
the supernatural phenomenon from Tashas can spice things up too
Most quests are 2-5 travel days away. Sometimes they get to the destination without combat.
what i've taken away from this is i need
- some kind of rules for ration tracking
- determining weather
- a set of random encounters and how to determine if they happen
i really like this but i worry i will get caught up in just rolling dice over and over, and forget to narrate
or heavy rain or snow making the areas off roads be difficult terrain
Hello, friends
and do you guys count days of travel as long rests?
Make a weather chart with options suitable for the enviornment and roll against it; Control weather references some of the weather rules IIRC
I greet the Lord of Goofy!
Yes, Yes, Hello, tis I, a strange fellow 🧐
If you camp at night and don’t constantly ride, absolutely
alright - just wondering in terms of exhaustion rules. feel like it makes exhaustion absolutely moot for travel if you rest each night
long rests are like settling down to camp for the night; if not in a safe enviorn roll to see if they get ambushed, and reward them for setting watch or using spells like alarm, cordon of arrows, or tiny hut
If you ride throughout the night because you’re in a rush, that’s different
my players will be travelling in a desert, so i wanna implement some kind of heat exhaustion. my understanding is that long rests remove exhaustion
If the purpose of the game is travel and exploration, take a look at Pathfinder 2e much more of a focus.
Awh, damn, thinking about traveling makes me think of my Weredeer Shifter Monk
My party got into a Carriage with a noble, but my Monk was unsure of him so he hung on the side on the outside of the Carrige lmao
"Easier to bust a window in than out."
which is why, if you're moving through the wilderness and setting camp, you need to roll for ambushes
both extreme heat and cold, deserts are frigid at night
and would an ambush prevent a long rest having its effect? i know it's 8 hours of uninterrupted doing-nothings but can they not just go straight back to resting
This is why I play with find familiar, you better believe someone is keeping lookout and we are not about get surprised
it'd cut into their travel time the next day, if they set a watch, maybe they can scare off the enemies or avoid being surpuised
should i prep a distance required to travel and not an amount of days then?
Even familiars can be caught off gaurd 🧐
If the monsters are completely invisible and soundproof, I suppose so
rules are so confusing i should really just take my players on a real hike
that might be good to do, yeah
Surprise familiar punch!!!!
Comical Bonk
Familiars aren't THAT strong and/or aware of everything lol
It's a level 1 spell
They just have ridiculous passive perception tbf
Not all the time
don't have to make survival/exploration a massively outsized pillar, but every dm should 100% implement at least somelevel of that list
my campaign is gonna be mostly travel, so i'd like to implement a set of concrete and fun rules for it
Never overestimate the usefulness of a Familiar, that's my motto 🧐
never in my year of DMing has a single one of my players cast find familiar
I see it all the time.
I usually go with owl, advantage on perception checks for sight or sound are pretty nice
my players usually only take damaging spells
teach them the value of utility the hard way
Gotta teach them the value of utility spells
One spell you should never be caught lackin' is Detect Magic
I keep forgetting to use mine and then I remember she exists and she absolutely trivializes things
welp, hope the learny quick
I’ve got it on my warlock, cannot tell you how often it’s saved us
Frankly, familiars feel like a Money Drain to me, especially when your dm is okay with killing them.
As they should be, dms should kill familiars! Make you sound resources smh.
hey all. I need some tips and tricks. I wanna make a oneshot where the players explore an arcade and play little minigames instead of just fighting a random enemy, but I need to figure out how to make that fun. skill contests can get repetitive
I guess, my familiar never really interacts in combat
integrate small dice or card games, Heckna! does something like that with it's midway games
Like at most, I’ve been using him in a pinch to cast cure wounds on a fallen friend
at level 20 My character has
0/8 damaging cantrips
~4/43 damaging spells *if you count absorb elements
tbf she's a mix of martial and spellcaster but still, 0 utility spells is wild to me
Yeah, neither do none of the ones I've had, but they can't always just be out of the area when combat starts.
good idea! thank you!
I make an owl, generally they’re sitting in a tree hiding nearby
we have one caster and i believe all he has is mending
If we’re in a dungeon, they are waiting outside
Hey chat, what is the best way to make a D&D character? I tried D&D beyond for my first character and it wasn’t that bad since I was new and all but for my next char it feels kind of restrictive
Mending and mage hand are my go tos
You see, in a Dungeon would be where a familiar is most useful imo.
physical sheets are usually the best way to go as d&dbeyond only allows you access to content you own on the website
i also find i remember my character's abilities and equipment more if i'm physically writing it myself
as opposed to buying physical books, which last forever and don't require an internet connection
roll20 is nice because you can use your physical media by manually entering in the information from your physical books
Sure, I can try that, just gotta sink some time into it and I am willing to
But, by the time yoy get high level divinations, I feel familiars fall off vastly (Arcane Eye, my beloved, can map out an entire Dungeon with it cause it lasts an hour lol and don't have to send a creature into danger)
roll20 has its ups and downs, but I'd say is pretty solid for being free
once you get used to it, it never really takes too long
I'm more a prestidigitaion, elementalism, and mold earth sort of gal
maybe a bit of minor illusion and mending as well
i spend longer deciding how my character looks than i do on stats
Only THE best cantrips
Utility and Tomfoolery wise
true XD
Hey chat
If the main character from the hollow knight game were to be in dnd what sentient creature would it be in the DND world?
I use Prestidigitation to PISS yourself!!!!
Thri-Kreen?
Be a Sorcerer with Prestidigitation and Subtle Spell, then you're cooking a mean omelet
Thri-Kreen with the new Hollow Warden Ranger UA for a class
See, this is my kind of fellow right here
sup guys
I mean... ehhh..
Hmm....
Be a Thri-Kreen Eldritch Knight lmao
Or Bladesinger Wizard
I raise you a GOOlock with minor illusion and the One with Shadows invocation c:
A thri-kreen who only uses one weapon
Well he is a knight and has the powers of soul and is the embodiment of the void
My player playing them is a hexblade
Let's remove the embodiment of the void part
Need the other hands for all the funky trinkets the knight gets
I raise YOU a shadow sorcerer/gloomstalker/shadow monk/hexblade party, no one will ever see you
I've used D&D Beyond many times and never felt restricted. It was definitely a learning process, because although it figures out all of the formulas for you, you have to know where they are and how to interact with some of them. Aside from that, you can roll your dice electronically on there. I don't see any need to do everything on a physical sheet. Besides the DM can also look at your character when you link it to them.
My favorite character was an Aasimar Aberrant Mind Sorcerer of mine, Zihass Xolba.
He was ALWAYS.. Always using Detect Thoughts and people were just so creeped out when he'd say something on their mind lmao
Heyyyy
That's cheating
He was a menace too.
He had our Druid wall up a cultists in a room in pretense we'd come back.
He never reminded them, but he remembered for certain.
Tomorrow I get to play dnd
Who knew an angelic being could be so cruel 😔
Maybe just go with knight x mage role?
I get to play my favorite bard boy ! Life is good (except when you witness horrible stuff daily but that's just bcs y'know Ravenloft)
Eldritch Knight Fighter, Some flavor of Ranger, or Bladesinger Wizard
Im itching to play dnd. My current session has been on hiatus for about a month now, just when things were getting more interesting
Bladesingers are fun
And they're also a bit frail
Get the true hollow knight experience
mine's been like that a year q_q
picked up a new one and have been playing loads of AL though
I'm in
7 campaigns :>
Hi in, I’m Nugget
Still not enough
You're getting beaten to death.
Needs Acrobatics and Arcana for sure
Hi nugget :D
6 D&D games and one Starfinder 2e Game
Time to find another long term group to play with, I’m hopeful I have
Hi 👋
Do we have other sentient bug species? Preferably unintimidating and only 2 arms
My Starfinder crew is absolutely nutty 😭
not really for insects
A whole year is insane
Are they all squirrels?
Fine...
I'll do a goblin run
I thought my Ratfolk Mechanic fella would've been the oddball out, but he's the most normal person in the group and there's TWO humans in that group as well lmao
Technically, you could use a small tiefling modled after one of the more insectoid demons or fiends
How screwed up mentally are those hoomans?
My cat has the zoomies hold up
Hooman?
flashbacks
I'll just use whatever species is small/short, not scary, and kinda cute
Autognome?
Just be a fairy,
Ones kind of okay?
He's just an Old man
But the other one...
I can't even say some of the things she's done...
She's like... a cybernetically beefed up psychopath who thinks people from different planets are just people from different states in America or different countries on Earth lmao
Honnestly, just use whichever species is mechanically closest to what you want to achevie and then reflavor it
flavor is free and the species are just a bunch of rules text with suggested flavoring
I think that's the closest to non intimidating insect 🦋 you can make them more insect like
She calls my Ratfolk fella a New Yorker lmao
Twitch league of legends 🐀
Whar
Ig rat
Our group has a Bug Person Outlaw who's also a streamer...
With a very low subscriber count lmao
How many subs to ragebait the paladin?
Oh, this is Starfinder, there are no Paladins
I can't remember what that is
I hate everything about it now
The classes are
Mechanic, Technomancer, Witchwarper, Mythic, Soldier, Solairan, Envoy and Operative.
OOOPOH THATH ONE
I’ll recant my statement, technomancer sounds so cool
Dwarf with dwarfism
Halfling moment /j
Chat do i pull a card? Next donation decides
I remember aunti Ethel saying something similar lmao-
I want something like the soldier class in my fantasy games sooo badly
It's a dwarf
But half the size of a regular dwarf
They need a subclass for fighter like that
Harengon is generally a good go-to for more flighty, agile characters
Battlemaster is typical soldier
mot sure a subclass coul do it justice
Honestly, I wish my Dm for Starfinder would've streamed it, the people in that group are the funniest bunch I know
And a few of them are streamers themselves lmao
Soldier isnt a class anyway. Its a job
the starfinder soldier class is VERY different to the battlemaster fighter
hihi!
Soldier is a class in starfinder
Oh you mean specifically starfinder soldier
I run a tanky build in hollow knight so I'm leaning more on dwarves for their frame
Me and my friend wanted to try out helluva town, anyone has any experience with that one?
yes very specifically the mechanics and flair
I'd say autognome then; really plays into the knight's alien nature as a vessel and is a solidly tanky species
Forgot about those things
I just want to be a hot cocoa mug with a marshmallow Gatling gun 🥺
could any of you guys look at my character to see If I should change anything
try #character-discussion ?
okkkkk
Realistically characters like the knight are challenging to pull off in ttrpgs because the point of the knight is that it's an empty vessel, lacking a lot of personality and identity, where ttrpgs shine when characters have that personality in spades. (You wanna be able to enjoy playing four hours a week of a character, and a silent protagonist without all that much agency isn't always the most fun to play)
More to the point, anyways, there's not really a great analogue for the knight as far as species go. As others have mentioned, thri-keen are the closest we have to bug folk but it's not an exact match. I would really say, you're not gonna get anything all too close to the knight without some heavy reflavouring. Talk to your DM about the kinda character you wanna play - usually they're the ones with the best ideas how to merge your fantasy in with the world and mechanics of a ttrpg. I would especially do this if you plan on heavily reflavouring a species, especially one which is a cornerstone of fantasy with all sorts of expectations surrounding it (such as dwarf)
HELLO
Hello
What's up
i joined for emojis yayyy
Respectable, I joined because I want to talk about this game all the time
i never play dad
how can i even try it?
The rules are free. Go read them. 🙂
😭 lazy well bai baiii
Once you're ready, you can head over to #find-a-game to look for a group to join or can look on one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, your friendly local game store, or anywhere else games can be found.
holy meabhyy
well, you asked
that was too much
Things worth doing take effort
such a big meanieee
anyway, brb, gonna eat something quick cuz I have a game in like 45 mins
What kind of game

D&D Adventurers League
I should look into another campaign if the one im in gets postponed again. I got so many characters Ive been wanting to use
I want a silly campaign
I want to use a joke character so bad but I keep on doing Serious stuff!
same, also a gestalt ruleset campaign q_q
I just wanted to make a blacksmith fairy who can't even touch iron!
Good luck 🤞
Evard's Gentle Tentacles
It evard’s black tentacles
Freaky
Not this version!
Not math suggestion?
mass*
I'm on VTT and Google doesn't like me >.>
Mass Suggestion, if you recruiting multiple people
I like doing warlock cultists, so they do Disguise Self and Friendship
10 people tell you to join, but they're the same girl each time in disguise
I'm guessing I can't post links to something here but figured I'd ask before trying. Not trying to promote anything just saw something I really thought would be nice and interesting to share. Basically, sharp (edged) dice. There's a whole technical argument about why they're (much) better which, I'll be honest, I've forgotten, but I do remember that I was convinced of it a long, long time ago and just saw a worthy place to buy some from.
Or yknow Norse Foundry
Mutant Blood Hunter Plasmoid that's just a writhing mass of loose flesh, yes or no?
Yes
Hilarious
My Drow Warlock is currently trying to prevent Lolth from getting pieces of the Rod of Seven Pieces lmao
He got his ass kicked hard last session lol
I can imagine Lolthites would love to execute him right about now
Idea. 3 more bears
No.
You’re right 4 more bears
We already have to deal with these Three Warforged fellows where last session ended off.
Perhaps I can negotiate though
Perm haps
Rarely am I happy to be playing a Charisma character as I don't typically like facing, but I can be damn good at it, I suppose
I found a dnd website that was like Reddit but specifically dnd centered, but can’t find it again. It was like something forge, any idea what it was??
Is what
Heroforge
No, wait..
Worldforge?
This might be an off-topic question but do yall ever find it so difficult to find games, like im a minor and every game I see is either 18+, at midnight for me, or full.
I find it very difficult to find a game... so I decided to run one. 3.5 is hard to find.
Minors and trying to join online D&D games with internet strangers is always going to be challenging for legal and social reasons.
Hey I’m new to dnd and I’m wanting to find a group of people to play with for my first ever campaign
You may have better luck seeing if your school has a D&D/RPG club
Yeah i tried running one too but it was a absolute ****show.
Give #find-a-game a good read - has useful tips and explains how to use our Looking For Game channels
Ta very much
I wish rural irish schools suck, I do have a group I play with online Saturdays (all minors) but my gf is the dm and im tryna find a game for her to play as a player with me but honestly it feels like getting teeth pulled.
Ah rural school was fun
Its alr tho ill keep checking #looking-for-players until I find something lol.
Best of luck
Yeah it can be like that and it's hard. Sorry that being a minor can be so challenging in this regard. Occasionally we do see some LFG posts that are specifically tailored for youth but... got to be patient and keep looking.
(But also as a minor do be careful - we've had incidents of creeps specifically targeting minors which is why we have the "don't share personally identifying information" rule on the server)
Ah yeah Im not that young and ive been on the Internet long enough to seen creeps lol.
Plus my gf only wants to play with other minors anyways, personally idm but I gotta respect her wishes.
hullo
Hi all
It can be a useful tool kit to have
I just played my first ever campaign!
huzzah
Hello everyone, was recently gifted that welcome to hellfire DND Set and i was wondering if anyone has had the chance to run it? I had a question about the pre made characters and their proficeny bonus? does anyone know where to ocate that on the sheet? i have an idea but it is not clearly mark. If you can help thank you if not peace and love.
You'll probably have a lot more luck in the Adventure Spoilers dedicated thread
https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1428731632885698630
How was it??
It was pretty awesome! Got me super excited for next weeks game. With it being my first time playing, it took me a little while to get used to different actions/dice rolling and turn taking. And also the role play aspect as well
+2 at level 1
Goes up every 4 levels
+3 at 5
+4 9
+5 at 13
Still figuring out the different cantrips and leveling up and what not of my character
Pretty typical for a first session 😛
Did you create the character yourself from scratch?
whoever wants to discuss campagin or character ideas dm me 🙂
I did! Paper sheet and all. Watching youtube videos and reading through dnd beyond for specific info. Turned out pretty great in my opinion
There's also #character-discussion and #dm-world-building
That's great 😁
Honestly the perfect way to make a character imo
I'll never let my players not use paper character sheets 😤
The D&D Beyond builder guarantees players who have no idea how their character works 😅
jow did i not know abt this before omg
i love paper sheets
i did my first full one abt a month ago, i always leave em half finished in a folder lmao
First char was alr kinda hard because he is closer to a stout but I could only make him a dwarf due to D&D beyond
im enjoying too much the pages, it help me to keep track of lots of stuff, texts, spells, etc.
yeah my first sheet was an astral body monk the paper is way better to keep notes on with that complicated of a character
Thank you, but when it comes to their actuall abilities it isnt marked on the sheet with a filled in bubble or a star like on some premades. Would you know how to identify? thank you
So when people say homebrew campaign they just mean I made it up from my brain we're not using a source book because that's how I see it being used but I thought it meant like house rules and handmade creatures and stuff
I don't have the set so would have no idea.
If they have the +5 etc next to for example sleight of hand, you can see what they're proficient in if sleight of hand is 5 but stealth is 3 or so on, when both use Dex. But that's a very roundabout way of doing it.
sometimes it add his own whole set of rules, other times they add some just homebrew stuff, like items, mechanics, etc.
Depend on each one
Homebrew is something you do on your own, and often it does means your own house rules which may be foreign to D&D altogether. I prefer premade adventures, especially from the 70's and 80s. You don't have to follow them word for word or even in the same setting. They can be used as guide to something else you would like to create.
Hello. I am new to this server. I wasn’t sure where to introduce myself.
I have played D&D before since 2021 when I wanted to try it out. I have played 2 to 3 games in 5e. I have both Roll20 and D&D Beyond.
I have played Artificer on my first game (not really sure if I played it right), I played as a Sorcerer twice, and I was in a campaign as a rogue for 1 session before the campaign died due to scheduling issues. I have drawn my characters. And I have been interested in homebrew creations. I did make a homebrew race that I wanna try out.
Welcome!
Bienvenido!
any favorite spell buddy?
Greetings adventurers!
What are some good adventures that I can run as a new dungeon master? I'm wanting to start my players at level one. But I'm not exactly sure what adventure to run with them.
BBEG evade taxes, the party work for the IRS. Must collect.
Well that’s a tough question to answer. Perhaps Hellish Rebuke, I played a Tiefling because they were cool. And maybe Magic Missile as well.
It can mean any of that stuff.
But almost always it means they created the world and not the rules. There's a store bought campaign setting like Greyhawk or one you make up.
Anything in D&D that you make up is considered homebrew
Most homebrew campaigns will have a few homebrew creatures probably, but usually not much else. People actually like to play D&D y'know, not whatever terrible concoction the DM is cooking up
(this is in reference to homebrew rules which drastically change the game (almost always a bad idea unless you know your group super well) not in reference to DM creations in general)
I print sheets on super nice parchment card, to encourage my players to want to use them 😛
I've been out of the game for a few months and was doing inventory the other day and realised I have like 100 super premium character sheets ready to go, which was a fun discovery.
hahaaa thats beautiful
Thanks my grandma says the same thing
Is there anyone here who lives in TN
I don't know where that is so I probably don't... Just in case this is really specific I'll gently remind you the server has rules against sharing your location outside of very large regions like timezone or country
I assume Tenesse?
Idk tho, I’m no the opposite side of the world in the Land Down Under
I don't tell people where I live. I just get doxxed like a real modern folk.
There's server rules against revealing personal info like that
ok buddy hope you're having fun
Well the only kind of d&d stuff I do is games on my ps5
Ditto 😛
No way would I recognise an American state by state code lmao
I mightn't recognise an American state if you wrote out the whole name
Cause only adults here and none of them play d&d
Just seeing if anyone has any suggestions... I was granted the Scissors of Shadow Snipping. DM has allowed me to have 1 shadow that has its own attack turn and any other shadow takes my primary action and/or bonus action if i want to have 1 or 2 more attack. Has anyone found a beneficial way to utilize this item?
Given that Tennessee has over 7 million people… I’m sure there’s someone. Check local population centers for game stores, they’ll be the places to connect with people.
You can also scour libraries, Facebook groups… all that stuff
And I know you all talk about the board game on here not console d&d game
ok I have a wizard for my character. it shows I have a bunch of level slots with different spells. How do I know what ones to use and when? Is there a video or a cliff notes for it?
Yeah, I guarantee if you live in a state in the USA there's someone else in your state on this discord
Whether you'll find them active on the same day as you is a different question... But you'll easily find folks in your timezone
If you're actually looking to join a local game group I recommend looking up a dedicated discord for D&D in your area
This international discord doesn't really facilitate irl games
This is against the rules - please don't share PII such as specific locations outside of country or timezone
Might want to remove that one
I removed it was just gonna recommend a gaming hall that is popular near here
hi
Hello Capybara
There’s not a “console D&D game”
Larian studios bg3 would be considered dnd
No, it wouldnt
Has basically everything dnd involvement and mechanics
It's the functional equivalent when you say teh term 'console D&D' however
With a few rule changes for video game purposes
D&D is a social ttrpg. BG3 is neither of those things. It’s lacking the core components of D&D
Has action, bonus action, reaction, movement, rp in choices... exploration several ways to play the game as well
They’re different games. BG3 may be inspired by D&D 5e, but it is not the same game
Considering Solo D&D is a thing that exists, you cannot arbitrarily declare the social aspect is a requirement to still be considered D&D
I mean you can play with others. But its a dnd game I would definitely say bg3 is a dnd game
It’s not arbitrary. It’s literally in the first chapter of he PHB
Making a campaign kinda like dark souls, making that if a character die he can resurrect in the last fire they rested. A tpk would result in loosing Gold in general
Would be good idea that?
That would suggest that Solo D&D is 'not D&D' as well. Which is just splitting hairs. But this is (as we often do) a pointless semantics argument
I mean same concept as Witcher game not being the book or the series.
It’s not a pointless semantics argument? That would be debating over terminology, not what something factually is. BG3 is, factually, not D&D
Yes, the Witcher video games are not part of the Witcher book series
But bg3 has everything dnd with a automated dm and automated responses.
Its video game version dnd
Imagination is a key ingredient of Dungeons & Dragons, a cooperative game in which the characters that you roleplay embark on adventures together in fantasy worlds filled with monsters and magic.
First paragraph in the Basic Rules 2024, bold added by me
If the dude wants Baldur's Gate the DnD video game then let him. These are semantics.
They aren't going to cave on how they define D&D
I mean the game allows you like 4 choices for each question. It is not true imagination but its video game choice imagination.
I don’t think people’s desires nor opinions can alter reality. Just because somebody wants BG3 to be D&D, does not make it so.
And this isn’t a semantic nor pointless argument; if newcomers come in here, as they so often do, and see people claiming that BG3 is D&D, they’re going to be confused and misinformed.
Ill agree its not = to real dnd. But saying "theres no console dnd game" is false.
I mean there is a Larian studios discord. This is a dnd discord big difference in tabletop and video games
Is the Jump spell better in 2014?
"Baldur's Gate 3 is as close to playing pen and paper Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition as you can get within the medium of a videogame with many of the core principals and ideas being incorperated as well as they can with that restriction." That is a true statement i think we can at least agree upon
It's a game based off of DnD. There's really no point in making this deeper than it actually is.
Not really no. The only time 2014 Jump spell is 'better' than the 2024 version of the spell was for ultra niche, Strength Belt using Meme Monk builds that relied on the multipliers
Anyway... let's talk about our Illusion wizard characters. Do you guys have one or played as one?
A video game at the end of the day. Of course being socially surrounded by people is better. Thats why
in person> FaceTime dnd
Facetime>vc
Vc>pbp
Hi chat. My DM for my main campaign convinced me to buy Baldur's Gate 3 and created a lobby for the 2 of us to play in.
Oh boy lol
Yes, that is a true statement. Perhaps unfortunately, it is not something that was said by the person I began this discussion with.
I really don’t appreciate people coming in here and joining a discussion for the sole purpose of saying the discussion is meaningless. Don’t participate I. The discussion; move channels or have another conversation. But the fact is, I called attention to a factually incorrect statement. No amount of shifting of goalposts is going to change that the original statement was incorrect. And no amount of claims of lack of meaning will change that misinformation should be called out.
hilariously topical
I actually kind of enjoy it, although navigating is torture because my mouse is broken and I'm too used to OSRS movement 😂
I'm so spoiled moving my camera with right click and being able to click on the mini map to move xD
Are you new?
Today was the first 3 hours of ever playing BG3
The “New to D&D” tag seems to imply they are.
Regarding to d&d, I started the campaign I currently in a month ago, so does that still make me new if we had less than like, 7 actual sessions?
I didn't call it meaningless. I called it semantics after we disagreed because I don't think the distinction matters quite as strongly as you do. It's why I simply stopped trying to sway your opinion because I recognize when one side isn't going to budge here regularly. I would consider bg3 to be D&D in a different form teh same as I would another edition of the game. You don't and that's that.
No I hate when someone joins us and says "Well that's how it works on BG3." -_-
Bg3 can help you understand what you can and cant do in combat. In terms of movement, actions, bonus etc. But like Sam is saying dont expect bg3 to dnd 100% same. There will be changeovers especially in party imagination and rp. However it is a good way to get a grasp of how the game is played in turn based mode.
Are we playing BG3? No? Then we use the dnd rules. 🤣
I think Solasta is closer
I instantly could tell the difference between BG3 and D&D, which my DM was nice enough to actually show me how it functions differently and what's similar.
Since BG3 has its own homebrew where as Solasta is more standard 5e
I think ‘newness’ is something that can only be defined by oneself. Do you feel confident in the mechanics of the game? Do you think advice aimed at newcomers would be the most helpful for you? That’s how you should define if you’re ‘new’, not an arbitrary amount of sessions.
Anyone wanna play a gestalt?
I'm honestly at the point of understanding the small specific mechanics. For example in my sorcerer, my current learning curve is optimizing the usage of concentration spells and metamagic.
Yes you have a dm?
But I know how initiatives work, what I can and can't ask as a player to my DM, how to approach my DM when doing different checks, etc.
I think if you’re thinking about tactics rather than how your features work, you’re pretty experienced.
tbh I don’t think any video game can entirely replicate pen and paper dnd
No I don't have a dm
Writing a book?
True
No there's actually modules that exist for playing the game solo
Solo D&D factually isn’t D&D because the rules explicitly require more than 2 people
Well thanks! I do pride myself on being a fast learner and I think it shows. My party even mentioned how much more confident I am in the recent sessions with my actions, and that I'm asking less clarifying questions.
Well yeah cuz it's a game of imagination. It's a bigger open world than any game can even dream of replicating.
Only fan made though right?
But there are plenty of quite enjoyable solo systems
Why is Baldur's Gate limited to Lvl 12?
You can have a party of 4 in bg3
But I believe the point earlier was BG3 is a great gateway into DnD as it has some of the basic rules and guidelines. It's not perfectly replicated but it's close ish.
Cause level 7+ spells gonna break the game.
I know? Thanks for sharing?
I got into playing dnd in the first place from Neverwinter nights back in the day lol
Because the designers wanted the game to scale to that level and not further
Arguably less D&D than Baulders Gate
Drunk on druid, would you be willing to dm for me and the others who would want to play gestalt.
They said adding the spell "dispel magic" would have added another year in development for just that singular spell
I got into playing DnD because of my boyfriend. He brought me into his campaign and they were all really nice and taught me how to play.
Tbh, if I was a game developer, yeah I would do the same 😂
Make that a whole DLC lmao
homebrew is still D&D. Not sure about if any official solo mods exist, I dont play them
No never done it and I would love to join as a player. But I dont have the capabilities to throw homebrew God's at yall
I like to run raw monsters not create Gods...
Only to an extent. Homebrew that differs too far from D&D is the D20 system but it can easily stop being D&D
Like Pathfinder is not D&D
Damn.
Pathfinder isnt 'homebrew' thats a whole different game system
No one is ready to gestalt it would seem, and I come from another time.
Level 20 is plenty enough
If you’re trying to organize a game, use #find-a-game
Original pathfinder used the open source D20 system that was created for D&D and if you homebrewed D&D enough in the right direction you'd get to pathfinder.
Ship of Theseus stuff
I've hit the weekly limit on posting for find a game.
Wait, I'm getting new lore. This D20 system is different than D&D?
I mean its just alot of dm work and sure I can throw a couple cr 30s at yall. But to make yall become the demi-gods yall would be at level 30... I mean lot of dming prep there
The campaign/game itself is designed for level 12s, every campaign has a designated end level
Not a lot of official games that went on to level 20
But I'd argue removing the social element from D&D immediately removes it entirely
That's a new ship with some of the same parts
Pathfinder isn't social?
Yes it is??
We start at level 5 if anything to get it along faster because I want a straight into the action back to back to back daily games but I cant find enough dms to work that campaign improv style.
Yeah D20 system is just roll a D20 and add modifiers (<- Hugely oversimplified) D20 and non D20 systems used to be the core differentiator between TTRPGs
Ive never played it idk
Many other systems are D10 for example. or D6
Heard it was super customizable tho
pathfinder very much has social systems in it
I'm talking about solo mods for D&D aren't D&D
Like no more than Baulders Gate is D&D
Pathfinder is basically the game you play when you find 5e to be 'too simple' by comparison.
Add onto that that they aren't even from the publisher of D&D
Ahh.
is d20 generally considered the best system
Well I may as well fade from time.
But D&D invented it
Subjective entirely. D20 systems are just the most well known
I know a lot of people like gurps
Arguably along with TTRPGs in general though that's a whole frikin thing not worth getting into
So I talked with someone and they do ADnD. I assume that uses a different system other than d20, right?
No, it's a d20 base system
Not at all it's just one of the systems. It's definitely stood the test of time but there's no metric that could make it "the best" many ways to skin a cat
ADnD was just a more complex dnd
What does the "A" even mean?
Oh well larian discord has people hourly looking to play together. I haven't played bg3 in about a month but it gets social over there. Just like any rpg game theres dialog and you can choose between them. But yeah in actual dnd the "dialog" is a actual person too. So the imagination can be infinite times more creative with a actual human dming.
The a stands for advanced
advanced
ah.
Particularly when it comes to Dungeons and Dragons, it's advanced Dungeons and Dragons first or second edition
Nope, that's the D20 system.
Though the public D20 system a lot of early TTRPGs were based off I believe evolved more with 3rd edition? (Getting out of my depth here)
So a more complicated system, I'd imagine.
they dropped the advanced bit after a while because I think basic wasn’t that popular
This is what is meant when people talk about 1 e or 2 e
But I am aware there are a lot of D20 based games all the way back in the AD&D games
Many of them unauthorised plagiarism since you can't exactly copyright the idea of rolling a D20
I feel like this would be an interesting rabbit hole to research on
i liked lots of table games that had dices, dnd was one added that i liked more because you have a whole roleplay added it and lots of other stuff
As recommended before #find-a-game is your friend
Yeah Baulders Gate is not D&D for many reasons outside of social haha
I was just arguing the point that D&D has a solo mode - it does not
Now when you see an old TT RPG book that has d20 system on it. That's typically going to be a game that's based upon the open gaming license from third Edition.
in the end of the day dnd can be resumed in, roleplay, gambling and maths
Well, the D&D may not have a strict Solo mode. There is support for one player, one dungeon master.
I consider exploration apart of rp so yeah pretty much
Social as well
Coin flip systems are the best.
Oh you have no idea lmao, the origins of TTRPGs and early D&D are absolutely wild
If you want a lovely short, super exciting but complete beginner overview, check out "what's a grognard" by Zee Bashew
there’s coin flip systems?
No, I am lying for humorous effect.
i put the whole interactions in the roleplay
The gambling for the dices
The maths because you can manipulate some numbers in many ways
oh I’m dumb lol
There’s was 0D&D, which was the original books released by Gygax as a supplement for the Chainmail war game. Then there was AD&D 1e, Basic, and AD&D 2e. Then 3e, which was revised into 3.5e. There was also an open license for this edition, upon which many systems, including Pathfinder 1e were based. Then came 4e, then 5e, and finally the 2024 rules revisions for 5e.
yeah, many people use coinflips for stuff
In the principal campaign im in, we use coinflips for the death saves. 3 failed coins and you down.
There definitely is haha I'm sure somebody has made a coin based TTRPG
It'd just be a small gimmick game like ten candles or the Jenga games
We love gambling.
Sounds like a nice way to make things more deadly.
there’s a lot of fascinating history regarding ttrpgs in general tbh
Yeah rp sums up everything dm wise and player wise creativity.
Gambling and math come after that. 3 principles would be accurate
I'd say I don't, but I play mtg
like, in some pages you can roll a 1d2, so that would be a coinflip already
so I have no leg to stand on here
And now we're here in the 2024 era, D&D is finally perfect and needs no changes
Right…
I'd say I don't but I just plain hate myself 😎 /Half-Joking
Yes, i will talk with him about "okey, with the coins flips you cant get a nat20 and get up instantly, can we make that if someone save 2 of 3, get back with at least 1/5 of hp?"
There's also the 1995 revision to 2nd Edition advanced. And Dungeons& Dragons essentials that came out between 4th edition and 5th edition. Not to mention the many revisions and variants of the D&D basic set.
It's ok, we all have a little self hatred (looks at winter orb)
Well see with the d20 you are technically getting a 55% chance at death saves
0dnd was perfect. 3 races, 3 classes, 3 alignments 😤
yep, but a nat20 exist and get you up instantly
Well, that’s not the only party that’s more deadly. Regular Death Save mechanics have a 5% chance of 2 fails, 40% chance of 1 fail, 50% chance of 1 success, and 5% chance of being up with 1 hit point.
Let's go Gambling.
wild magic + coin flips
wait actually it was 4 races
We're about to get into the most "Umm acktually" territory that can possibly exist
I do like a little bit of gambling, but I'll be honest, wild magic sorcerer is like my least favorite
The 1995 revision to second edition advanced is the closest thing to the most recent revision to 5th edition. Despite people harkening back to 3.5, that one was much more drastic.
I umm acktually’d myself
I wonder what a campaign comprised of only wild magic sorcerers would be like.
even if its 5%, there it is.
Going for coin flips make it more 50//50 but there is no 5% that instantly save you. That is why i will ask him that, if one get 2 saves from 3, directly, get back with 5% of hp lets say it
Ah, 0D&D, where a table was expected to have 1 DM and 20 players
a whole lot of nonsense
Everytime I look in the mirror, I see the man whovruined my life!
5% that can also kill ya or 2 death fails at least with the d20
I'm keen to go back to 3 alignments tbh.
You character can have a fleshed out personality, but just choose if you want to be good or you want to play at a different table to mine FFS.
None of this "chaotic neutral" (<- I'm secretly a supervillain villain but pretending I'm neutral)
You have to chose:
4 bards
4 wild magic sorcerers
4 paladins with completely different oaths and gods
4 chaotic neutral rogue orphans
Throne of Bloodstone my 1e beloved. Suitable for players level 18-100
4 Wild Magic Sorcerers.
4 paladins obviously, at the end of the day at least they'll manage to accomplish something
What about "im secretly a villain against other villains so im seen as a hero but im really the main villain"
Also, Paladins don't NEED Gods to make oaths lol
Orphans or Bards
The closest 5e has gotten to 0D&D is when the Dragonlance book straight up said “for this fight, buy a board game.”
I know lol but the joke is funnier if they do
tbh, a group of paladins can be like the power rangers lmao]
I think a group of paladins that made a oath to eachother would be a good concept.
yep, but my point remain, i will ask him and if he like it good, if not, welp, we can talk it out. Fortunately im in hell right now so there is no way that 200 baboons show up out of nowhere or 20k skavens too
Paladins That stress they don't need gods. Are the ones that need Gods the most. 😉
wait, imagine a group of paladins who combine their oaths all into one epithet
Paladin polycule
I like how nobody has picked 4 bards
The DM intentionally sends them on a quest that forces them to interact with other gods throughout it
Thats the band
that's just AC/DC
4 warlocks but they all have different pacts and try to out perform each other.
Because the ‘haha freaky bards we all hate the bard at our table” is short-form slop that this server mostly hates
The pacts being in lore rivals would be funny
4 clerics, but they're all arguing about who has the best church
4 wild magic, the luck of all of them getting exploded by his own fireball would be giga funny and i would like to write that story
Tbh I’m not into the anti bard jokes either but I had to include it
This is a great concept as well for political/religious reasons
right?
The objective answer on best church is Kelemvor. Of course.
4 different parts of the map
My DM kinda doing that to my kobold. He has me as a sorcerer that reps a diety that all the other party members and their deities despise.
Remember the time WotC wrote that the protection deity sent his clerics to colonize the Aztecs? Fun times
Wait what?
Look up Maztica
yea
That's a weird way to spell Lathander
weird way to spell selune
In helm's defense.... The Nexalans did perform human sacrifice like daily.
well, we all know who shadowheart dislikes the most
Weird way to say mother nature (idk dnd gods like that haha)
Not even the other people of Maztica liked the Nexalans.
My selunite cleric banishing Shadowheart to camp jail the entire game:
I can confidently say I just convert her every time, because nobody in this household likes shar
Clearly the best Deity is Mask
I don’t know how I feel about starting a sentence with “in [the colonizer]’s defense” /lh
||I sure did get Shadowheart in jail by accident in goblin area||
Sune is objectively terrible. Because she is all of the good parts of love.
And all of the creepy parts of obsession stalking etc.
She only brought her out to convert her lol. We do not stan Shar in this household
My DM is funny and thought about only picking options that'll get Shadowheart to dislike us.
Silvanus is the god of wild nature I think
if you're looking for someone to stan
Oh well then that's my G
You know...
I can't really see any of my Clerics converting people to their faith...
Maybe because they're based 😎
And Mylekki or however it’s spelled
I didn't say you in cordell's defense. I said in helm's defense. But yeah. With Nexal is not a colonizer like painting of them. Nexal was objectively evil. To the point where their own gods came back and destroyed them.
are the welcome to hellfire club adventures good?
Chauntea is closer to Mother Nature
She's like specifically forests I think?
Not even my Drow Trickery Cleric of Vhaeraun would do so smh
Normally I would agree but Shar is an exception
Chauntea is actually the strongest God in the FR, iirc
She's more representative of demeter I think, like the goddess of agriculture
Time to start making violently faithful Clerics, ig
I’d reckon Demeter is Demeter
She is one of them and one of the most widely worshiped not that most people in the realms choose a god to follow. A person choosing a specific god is actually pretty rare.
I mean, I was just drawing comparison lol, I thought her symbol was a bushel of grain
for as bad as shar is, mystra is also objectively awful
Mystra is here just to have a good time.
Mystra is uh. Yikes
Chauntea and Mystra are the two deities who you absolutely do not want to anger, because they could most easily destroy you and anyone near you’s lives
