Nah id solve it
I'm hoping one of the other bards took "Protection against good and evil"
a lot of the maps have very small details that hide loot and magic items, but i doubt you guys will find everything
... Evren, we have one guy who's main thing is treasure hunting
trust me when i say gan is bad at using his eyes
Just because that's a characters main thing doesn't mean a character will find all the treasure
With the amount of magic items and hidden loot, I am starting to see how difficult this campaign could get...
Baphomet is straight up ||Immune to charm||, though lmao
i'm not surprised you don't know what countercharm does. i also forget it exists sometimes.
I know what it does..
well i had forgotten it until this convo
But a bards main thing is charming.
And Demons just... ignore it lol
I don't have faith in them.. because they're pitiful BARDS!
Counterspell you mean
mainly the glamour bard's subclass is dud
i'm more impressed that i permitted the casting of infinite leveled spells per turn and no one took a level of sorcerer or metamagic adept
Nope, everyone wanted to be a bard
how are you not Charmed by the prospect of triple fireball
It's like.. the worst class for fighting fiends
or... OR... three vicious mockeries from three bards
y'know what, fair point
Looks like I rolled a nat 20 on persuasion
||Baphomet when he has a +14 to Wisdom saves||
that's on me, the dc was 2
and now it's a charisma save because i said so
->?
makes more sense to me, insults to be resisted with your confidence
The idea is being thrown off by an insult, not being offended
that again sounds like charisma to me
is there a homebrew channel here to help bounce some ideas for my campaign i’m writing?
Charisma is more force of will.
And
Wisdom is more Focus.
My spell save DC is 16 and he has a WHAT bonus to his charisma saving throw?
why don’t i see that channel
#dm-world-building for world/setting stuff, #homebrew for stats/mechanics
Discord likes to hide channels
you need to select the category, mate
add it to your channel list
Let's hope Baphomet rolls a nat 1
it's ok i'm sure you'll reach like 35 DC by the end of it
Which is not.
Vicious mockery is a DISTRACTING thing, not a hurt my feelings thing
if
Is a hill dwarf light domain cleric fun?
most homebrewn enemies of my campaign have spell resistance, so be more concerned about that
I mean, if three people came up to me and insulted me at the same time my feelings would be hurt
it's a light cleric, it's always fun
Oh no
That's not the point.
That's not why vicious mockery isn't a Charisma save
First time playing cleric any tips?
uhhhhh if playing 14 inflict wounds is great
Most Enchantments are Wisdom based because it takes Wisdom, the strength of your mind, to resist them.
Its a wisdom save becsuse wisdom lets you see past the taunt
Past the fear, the charm
also don't really bother capitalizing on melee attacks, you're a full caster, you have potent cantrip, just use a cantrip
Charisma is for strength of personality, pushing outwards, not resisting others charisma
Can someone help me? Google says I can multi class my lvl 5 life domain cleric with a lvl 1 Druid for additional healing on my goodberries but the description of disciple of life confuses me, unless it means for every 1 berry I get an additional 3 hp per heal
- Don't trust Google for like.. anything
If a spell tries to imprison or control your soul, your being, then charisma save pushes against that
Because Charisma is the force of your will
Wisdom saves let you resist the force of others
guys, i'm not dying on any hills, you don't have to explain it that much to me
Nvm I understand it now
Its fun though
Please don't make a good cantrip a Charisma save against demons, your Bards are already gonna have a hard enough time 💀
the way i interpret it life cleric should work on spells that heal immediately upon cast
That’s what I thought too, but I have seen Instagram reels about doing something like this
The only time I'll ever advocate for bards
there is a lot of gimmicky combos that require not reading the texts fully to work
like people casting three fireballs per turn as hasted sorcerers without bending the rules
rules say they shouldn't be able to, but they think they can, so they don't bother establishing a homebrewn rule to say that they can
Well even with old haste you couldn't do that lol
"it gains an additional action on each of its turns. That action can be used only to take the Attack (one weapon attack only), Dash, Disengage, Hide, or Use an Object action."
which is, i mean, fine from my view. i specifically remove those restrictions because i want my sorcerers (read: none) to toss many fireballs
Rules exist for a reason
But play how you want to play, just don't be afraid to fix things if it becomes too much of a problem!
it's my table, i balance my encounters around the rules i tweaked
I hope you Gigabuff Baphomet
6 tier 4 pcs + one 20+ warlock + potentially another 20+ sorcerer... of course he will be gigabuffed
You should give him Antimagic Field :3
don't want to spoil to echo, but i've got ideas
Wonderful 🧐
I am both scared and excited
Hello Scared (or are you Excited?). Which would you rather I call you?
Oh, and I’m Nugget
Bonk
Deflect attack (no counter)
Someone please stop that endless stream of dad jokes
Nugget, Incubus demands it
I’d like to see them try
Do you know the FF character Edda Blackbosom?
trick question. she has nothing to do with the campaign. there are no parallels of her and anyone in the campaign.
Out of everything my character can do, you know what's my favorite? Every time I cast Tasha's Hideous Laughter, I have to come up with some pun about fire (she's a fire genasi). It makes my DM soooo mad 🤣
YEAHHH
And all of the puns are dreadfully unfunny, just stupid xD
How many 5ft squares does a 60ft long cone hit?
Are you just counting on the ground or are you counting the full three dimensions?
No sane dm is going to count all three dimensions
Because if you fly 60ft up and aim it straight down you get a gigantic circle.
Oh god
Oh hell yeah
60ft in ... diameter I believe it would be.
I need to find a way by level 11 to get my artificer warforged flight…
Are you an Alchemist?
Ahh well then you'll need something like a broom of flying.
As my action is cast conjure barrage, then as my bonus action I command my steel defender to use “staff of conjure barrage”, the entire battlefield needs to roll 2 separate dexterity saving throws, taking 5d8 force damage for each fail
Ahh yes, I've used Conjure Barrage on my Ranger to good effect.
2024 artificer is absolutely crazy
I just need to get some growth potions and I will have a flying mount.
I’m playing a small “warforged” named shmunk shmunk, with a homunculus servant named “shmink shmink” and a steel defender named “shmonk shmonk”
The homunculus is tiny, the defender is medium
this is adorable like im smiling while reading it lol hey yeah sorry i got lost..just joined the server.
All of my DnD characters are always super serious so I decided why not play one who’s just silly?
Since it’s a warforged I’m trying to get a good robotic voice, I know literally exactly what I want but I need to find a way to get it to work
I don't really play for silly. The funniest character I made was probably my Gym Bro Glory Paladin. He was an attempt to make a character who was unlikable in character, but funny to the players and not their characters.
He even had a Manual of Gainful Exercise that he proselytized from.
holy guacamole
I’ve still got a serious backstory for my little guy, but he’s supposed to be more lighthearted to play
His speeches for Inspiring Leader were all about himself and his gains. "You hate yourself for actually feeling inspired (temp hp)"
Took one level of Bard and his Bardic Inspiration? "Don't forget to stretch before battle!" wink
I think most shapes are in three-dimensions. I'm thinking if the line is too
My Warlock despised him lmao
But they worked together 🔥
is there any books that explain ALL of the subclasses for the basic classes or do i have to get multiple books?
Best to set it back to level 1, makes it easier to join campaigns
hey all i made a battle master maneuver and would like some opinions on it (please forgive poor wording)
Blinding attack
You expend one superiority die to attempt and blind a creature. When you attack roll one superiority die if the total of the attack plus the die exceeds the targets ac by ten or more the target is permanently blinded and cannot see. If it does not exceed ten or more and the attack hits regardless of the superiority die the target must roll a constitution saving throw. On a fail they are blinded for 1d4 rounds.
Level 3 is fine too.
Bad because permanent blind is insane.
Holy guaranteed blindness alone is insane
Well i mean stabbing someones eyes out
Guys should I give names to my archfey warlocks shoes
But permanent? Yeah tone it down
This would be a great feature for OSE or ADND where that kind of effect is taken into consideration a lot more. In 5e they take balance over realism.
guys the extra dmg from Hunter's Mark is from the first atk or all atk on the turn?
All attacks
I was thinking prim for the right one and proper for the left one
if i atk 2 times in the same turn i add this bons on the all atks?
Yes
Yeah although i wish there was a fighter maneuver. that way if anyone asks if they can just stab someone's eye i don't have to make a ruling and could just say "If you want that play fighter."
Gin and tonic
Life and Lemons
Peas and Pod
Apples and Oranges
Just say "on a nat 20".
I was thinking that the Hunter Mark damage bonus could only happen once per turn. very OP
ehhh that feels cheap you shouldnt make the dc for something a nat twenty cause then stats dont matter it is just a flat 5%
Apples and Oranges would be fun I think
It’s not that OP, it’s just nice
Tell them to play a rogue
ew no
A flat 5% chance for permanently blinding a creature or entity feels...too cheap even then. And guaranteed blind, with no save throw even if it isnt permanent that at higher levels they can spam like 8 times a day....Yeah idk how thats better then a nat 20.
Tbf that’s level 14
Imma be real, guaranteed permanent blindness on a crit is still too strong
Also I got these really pretty dice for my Archfey Warlock! They have miniature roses in them, with copper foil
Noice
well think about it like this they have to beat the ac by ten. most creatures above cr 10 have an ac of at least 18. a dc 28 check makes sense to blind them
I gotta hit up Norse Foundry again. I wanna get some tungsten dice.
Permanent blindness sou ds badass.
I mean, Wizards be slinging Fireballs so...
It’s more so that the blindness is guaranteed for me
Yeah make it a save like tripping attack and its a good addition.
i mean if you stab there eyes out i doubt being tough would help but i see what you mean
If you can target like that, stabbing someone in the heart would be pretty hard to live
not to mention any creature with regen or tremor sense can just not care.
No but they can like... try to avoid it. I mean youre targetting their eyes. Its not like its a regular attack where theyre just aiming for your mass tryna get a hit.
I feel like that is where the ac comes in. or maybe a dex check could make sense
Blindness is very strong in dnd
ehhh yeah hang on i got an idea one sec
Also, war clerics can just get a nigh guaranteed permanent blindness
So why is this a problem
My point is, getting that high rolls isn’t too hard at later levels or with buffs
Do dex saving throw. Then its balanced, although besides maybe tripping attack, rally and one or two more, blinding attack will become one of the strongest maneuvers and make Battlemaster that much stronger.
And permanent blindness is extremely powerful
In my example with a war cleric, a +15 to hit at level 3 has a pretty good chance of permanently blinding an enemy
(low key they should make battle master base kit maybe have less maneuvers and sup die)
Based on how its written, unless a monster is SPECIFICALLY immune to blind or has something else you can blind anything. Screw you slime, get blinded bozo.
still contest a dc 28 check is hard for anyone
I can kinda agree with that imma be real. Just some sort of variation
Fighter with maneuvers base kit? I'm...not against that.
I mean fighter base is so boreing it would help SOO much
is it kinda busted for stuff like echo knight 100%
It’s kinda meant to be simple tbf
What sorta staff/wand would an Archfey of the North Star have?
Idk does Fighter need to be complex baseline, I thought that was the job for subclasses
^ I agree with this
Plus fighters identity has just kinda gone to the “basic, fundamentals weapon guy”
Staff of woodlands
fighter generally adds complexity in 3 ways feats, subclasses and its high level features if your playing 2024(mainly tactical master)
Sorry, I meant like design wise, thx though!
Blinding attack
You expend one superiority die to attempt and blind a creature. If your attack hits roll a die equal to you superiority die and add it to the total of the attack, they must make a save depending on how high the attack plus die will determine difficulty.
save is a dex save dc 8+ strength or dex mod + prof.
if the total of the attack plus the die exceeds the targets ac by ten or more the creature must roll with disadvantage.
if the total of the attack plus the die exceeds the targets ac by five or more the creature rolls the save normally.
if the total of the attack plus the die exceeds the targets ac by less than five the creature will roll the save with advantage.
ok is that better?
I'm probably gonna go to bed. Gn!
i feel like that guy can still probably do maneuvers
i mean bg3 already did it
Which version of DnD 5e do you usually play? 2014 or 2024?
I play 2024
2014
2024
"Thug it out" (+7 T.hp)
BG3 is not D&D
2014 mostly with my principal group, will play 2024 iwth another
Yes and no, in concept its but its like we would say, giga homebrew
i mean many things they do are a massive improvment
Do you not play BG3 DND?
I‘m kinda depressed rn because I really looked forward to learning this game, only to now not know which version I should learn
like paladins not having channel divinity and having channel ouths
use 2024 and scribble out the drawings that you dont like
So...a slight name change?
i mean one of the changes
look at bg3 ranger bro. massive improvement there
most of people use 5e, 2014 or 24, both are kinda alike in a lot of stuff, would still recommend learn 2014 and from there go forward.
Still, you dont have to remember everything, there is pages, books ,etc. That you can support on it
2014 and 2024 are cross compat. Me personally? I'd join a group first. See which version theyre playing. And then learn from there.
Thankfully DNDBeyond exists and the DM can share their resources with you.
oh yeah, there is another layer of learning, pages.
Dnd beyond and i cant say others because i might get shot
yeah i cannot use dnd beyond
and i dont want another 10 minutes ban
So like finding a group to play with before learning the game?
but out there is like 3 to 5 pages that you can enjoy and learn
even some steam games that let you build a 3d version of everything too i think
Just played Gwent for board game night with my lady
Yes. Let them know youre new and you dont have many of the resources. DMs and players can share their resources like books and such with you via dndbeyond or by lending you the books physically. Then buy the books for the version youre playing if youre sure this is something youre interested in.
if not, theater of mind exist, so you worry less about tokens, maps, etc. etc.
Life is good
i love using dry erase maps, with character stands people can draw on themselves
it is truely the best of both worlds
@ember oasis and I are searching for people to play with
We are absolutely new to this game
i like foundry, it help in a lot of content and details, showing what a spell, feat, etc. do and the description help a lot, the lighting feel nice and some interaction stuff too.
Its of paid but its a one time paid
Check out #looking-for-players where DMs who are setting up games post. Read through and see if they are new player friendly.
Thank you ^^
Np
Man, my dm edged me and the party putting for the ending of the session the show up of the boss of this "chapter", i wanted to obliterate it and end with a big battle.
I love him for making such hype, i hate him for making us wait for it
But i guess good things take time to be made
that is why we take from 8 to 10 months to born
so remember that you all
The more you wait the sweeter the fight will be.
that is the thing, he is scared that if he dont fit the hype we have for it we might be upset and i know that he have sometimes a hard time balancing us
I can do like easily 30 to 50 damage per turn only
without haste or any other buff
All offers in this one seem to be very specific and advanced
See if your local area has any dnd groups ig. I will say its harder starting online then an inperson group.
Nobody I know plays DnD, I kinda don‘t know what else to do
ask them to play
And local DnD areas aren‘t a thing in my country
I need one DM ya know. One teacher
if you go to school there might be some clubs
You might need to be the DM to play D&D
Like, if your friends do not already play D&D and you are the one with the interest, you might need to be the one who undertakes the DM role
You'll figure out how to play with your friends who are also figuring it out
finding a group is honestly the longest part.. many players not nearly as many DMs. If you want a simpler game, you may have to wait a little bit
@ember oasis what do you think?
You should definitely be a DM. You're so creative
Awwww shucks 👉👈
50 million smackeroos
?
Oh
um
The intimidation factor of being interested in artificer and yet knowing your not intelligent enough to role play it lol
My current conundrum
You as the player need not share your character's strengths (or weaknesses)
What do you mean?
Put simply since I deem myself unintelligent I think me playing or portraying it would be considered boring to others as I simply would not even know where to begin
"Intelligence" isn't actually all the same one big thing, unlike how D&D portrays it, one of the many ways in which D&D is purposely unrealistic.
In what way do you think an Artificer must be intelligent? And how would one have to act?
Do you think a gearhead who is a really good mechanic for cars and such is a highly intelligent person?
Right i don’t know though specifically with artificer it feels.. I don’t know weird..? That you’re supposed to be creating all these things and yet you don’t know how to explain it? I feel they should be intelligent enough to understand their contraptions of the like but yes pretty much
A gear head or steam punk chronicler or the like
What about someone who slaps together something with duct tape, spit, and a kick? It somehow works, but when asked to explain it they just grunt and shrug?
Ah the old Rocket Raccoon/ Goblin trope
People who are geniuses in a certain field more often than not, actually can't explain it to people.
That’s fair point
Intelligence is not holistic.
As for the autistic or savant way of doing things it feels okay but considering your entire life was dedicated to it.. you should portray some manner of it.. lol then again I tend to highly overthink
What we think of as "intelligence" is simply competence.
And people are competent in certain fields, not every field.
Being able to explain yourself is also a skill, one in which not everyone is competent, eveni f they are highly competent in other things.
Flavoring is free, you don't have to set your int to 17 to roleplay a genius
You just have a barrier to what you regard as "intelligent."
But it is true that int concerns checks like arcana, religion, investigation, etc
Fair nuff
So your character can simply be really bad at reciting things
Bad memory problems
I can almost guarantee you that you are probably very intelligent in something, you just have low esteem about those things.
Just intuition too much alchohol
Yeah something like that, Minsc of Rashemen famously has 8 int 12 wis and would drop random deep lines then go back to his black and white sense of morality without actually understanding things
the ability scores in dnd really shouldnt be tried to be looked at too deeply
Oh definitely not at all, they are not realistic in any way.
Stares blankly .. @knotty pasture Who!!?
Minsc is a legendary figure/adventurer from the Baldur's Gate 1
I'm new to dnd it wouldn't let me pick new to dnd and the one i have on me also can anyone give me the rundown and how to play online especially on discord
What would be a way to do Fey trickery as a player? For example, the classic "May I have your name?".
Cantrip friends
What?
The spell cantrip friends
Yea, I guess I could flavour that as Fey charm magic, but is there anything wierder?
I mean... you can define whatever you want with dominate person. But trickery? You can go illusion spells with hallucinitary terrain, major image etc.
Minor illusio.
A simple presdigitation would be enough to be tricky with the right imagination.
But like, taking their name or something like that?
Im simply saying the spell is called friends. You can cast it and ask them their name.
I'm new to dnd it wouldn't let me pick new to dnd and the one i have on me also. Anyone trying to teach me how to play im new i barely know the basic
What kinda hero you want bud
Ok, yea I guess my Dm would probably allow that on an enemy we're about to kill or something.
Probably smt like Kas the bloody handed
What's he doing? Whats he like where does he work or how does he obtain money before this?
Huh
Why is his hand bloody
#dnd-newcomers sorry I was tryna help you develop a backstory lol
I went too fast lol my fault.
Forget backstory what do you want your character. To do in combat and out of combat or exploring.
Ahh someone with more iq in the lore should help with that one. Maybe warlock? Idk
You ever heard of the character Kas the bloody handed that's who I'm basing it off of
No but I just googled him. Sais he was a vampire esque
Ye
So my head went to monsters or warlock stuff.
Well before the vampire stuff he was a human paladin and a valiant knight. And a paladin who served various gods of death
So you want to make a paladin?
Then he rose to vecnas top general in war becoming a vampire them betraying vecna
So what would match that if nothing then yes
Well new player? Normally I wouldn't recommend multiclassing.... especially if you are playing 2024. So with just being paladin.
Okay
So whyd he betray him?
I normally play oath of ancients. But maybe vengeance or oath breaker (normally a dm given thing possibly) or death but definitely look through them.
What you wanta look for in the subclasses are their channel divinities. As well as their 7th level ability
Kas betrayed his master, the lich-lord Vecna, primarily due to the influence of a sentient weapon and his own growing ambition. The Sword of Kas: Vecna forged a powerful, sentient sword for his lieutenant. However, the blade possessed its own cruel consciousness and whispered to Kas, stoking his ego and convincing him that he was more powerful than Vecna and deserved to rule in his place.
Ambition and Pride: As Vecna’s empire grew, Kas became his "Hand," managing the daily affairs of the kingdom while Vecna became increasingly detached. This position of power fueled Kas's belief that he should be the true ruler.
Outside Influence: Some lore suggests that Nerull (the god of death) or other dark entities influenced Kas, offering him boons or power to slay Vecna and halt the lich’s absolute dominance. The Outcome
During their legendary battle, Kas used the sword to sever Vecna's left hand and gouge out his left eye. The resulting magical explosion destroyed Vecna's physical form and flung Kas across the multiverse, eventually leading to Kas becoming a powerful vampire lord.
I kinda just looked it up
Like oath of aincients channel divinity sucks but 7th level is amazing. Others channel divinity is amazing and 7th level amazing. Others get amazing spells and both features kinda meh. Just up to You for what paladin you think
Yea
But do you think you can create me a character book for me because I don't know how to and just do it to me
#dnd-newcomers they will help you. But yes glad you found your class.
Okay
Did he have zombies?
No mostly vampire spawn
Well..... in that case im definitely thinking warlock
You'll want a spell for your flavor called "vampiric touch"
Prolly dance macabre as well you can flavor them as vampire spawn. But yeah id go warlock but could also go death paladin here
I got the run down for multiclassing warlock and paladin
It seams easy
And hard at the same time
So probably going for a Hexadin build
It's a mix of a warlock and a paladin
@coarse ravine
2014 or 2024 you playing in?
If its 2014 you could go hexblade, paly... or undead paly lots of options. But yeah essentially in order to multiclass ya have to meet the requirements. For paladin thats 13 in strength and charisma. With hexblade you get to attack with charisma modifier. So you can just leave strength at 13 or take ir higher up to you but you can just focus con, charisma, dex or whatever you want. With the hexblade feature. Your aura will be based off your charisma as well. This is what makes Hexblade+ paladin a great option because it utilizes charisma as well.
I would at least go 7-10 levels of paladin tho.
2024 is better because i can use hexblade lvl 1
2014 ya can too
It’s used a lot because it’s cool. Do what you think is cool
Alr bet, mines albino for some reason lol
7 levels of paladin to get your aura. Idk how cool you want your character. But immunity to frightened is a awesome rp thing you could have. So 10 levels of paladin gets you immunity of fear. As well as the others around you.
- You no longer need the Hexblade subclass
In the 2014 rules, you had to pick the Hexblade patron to get "Hex Warrior" (Charisma for attacks). In the 2024 Player's Handbook, that power is now part of the Pact of the Blade invocation.
Level 1 Warlock: You can choose Pact of the Blade as one of your starting Eldritch Invocations.
Benefit: This allows you to use your Charisma modifier for attack and damage rolls with your pact weapon immediately.
2. You can pick a different (and better) Patron
Since any Warlock can now attack with Charisma, you aren't "forced" into the Hexblade subclass anymore. You can pair your Paladin with:
The Fiend: For temporary HP whenever you kill an enemy (great for a front-liner).
The Archfey: For frequent, short-range teleports (Misty Step) to move around the battlefield.
The Celestial: For extra healing and radiant damage.
But with that you'll definitely want your 5th level spells so idk when those kick ok live for warlock. So make sure you build for that. Totally OK to cut off paladin at 6 or 7
I just looked it up
Your 5th level spells for warlock will allow you to summon stuff. You'll prolly wanta be more warlock maybe
Well thats neat
Thank goodness not suffocating warlock into a corner pocket.
Undead is a great subclass. Genie has alot of flavor but for your character maybe fiend.
Okay
I mean its prolly in the top 5-10 combos
So like its one of the best?
From a stereotype standpoint sure
its a classic combo
I just did it bc it sounded cool, didn't know it was actually decent
What is one thing in DND that is obvious when you remeber but you forget alot.
I'll go first
Darkvision = Grey Scale
Orc works great with any martial class thanks to the adrenaline rush ability
Surprised they kinda short tho
Wanta get thematical with it go zealot. So you go down you get back up with half orc. Then zealot ya just cant die unless dm whips out one of them crazy monsters lol.
But yeah have fun with it.
an average lower bound of 6ft tall is short?
Ig its just the betrayal of movies, they make em seem like towering hunks of muscle
But yeah your right, its still tal
I mean you can always imagine your orc wide with muscle and 7 ft tall if you want
Yeah my half orcs are in the 6'5-7 foot range. Goliath and firbolgs 7'5-7-11
Mine is 7ft tall, lmao no way
Back to my character yet
idk where to ask this but whats the difference between cleric in player handbook and Cleric in Basic Rules (2014)
Cleric in the PHB has access to two more subclasses. That's the only difference.
TFW Piercer rerolls only make 3s and 4s into 2s
Oh wait, you're talking about the 2024 Basic Rules? Then there are significant differences.
yes
one of my friends is asking
and i havent used 2024 rules
but is there a difference in the phb and the 2014 basic rules though
PHB got more stuff in it. more species, more subclasses, more feats
Here they are if you want a look at both:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/classes#Cleric
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Cleric

yo wsggg
Why is there still no 2026 release plan for D&D books? They must have booked production slots already. If not we will not see any physical books at all this year. Is WotC doing the digital-only strategy they announced in 2024 now? Will they publish nothing on their own and leave the field to 3rd party publishers? So many questions and no word from WotC - that’s really bad customer communications… ☹️
👀
There's two different PHBs and Basic Rules. Are you talking about PHB (2014) and Basic Rules (2014)? Because those will basically be the same. Or are you talking about the PHB (2024) and Basic Rules (2014)?
2014 and 2014
Ok then the rules are all the same, the PHB just has more subclasses.
okay thank you so much!!!
my friend is joining our campaign and i didnt know how to explain it, hes new to dnd
Kind of wish flails had a special tag or 2. They're a pretty cool weapon in concept
The special tag was weird tbh. Which makes sense
Oh. I meant unique tags. Didn't know special tags were already a thing
Property: Flail: You're more likely to hit yourself /s
But yeah, Flail, Mace and Morningstar all share the interesting feature of having no properties at all
Cool weapons, but kind of fall apart because no tags
Only time you wanna really use a flail is if you want a bludgeoning longsword
While using a shield
I mean, Flail could be at least Reach or something a little creative. Morningstar could easily be something like 1d6 bludgeoning + 1d4 piercing
1d6+1d4 is more than a 1d10 tho,
And 1d8 is already the strongest one handed weapon
Two-handed reach bludgeoning, for a heavy flail.
I mean, at least longsword having the versatile trair could mean that you could use it with or without a shield
Imagine if Flail had a Special tag: Ignores Shield's AC
I mean, it would be a bit hard to balance. But seriously, nothing?
I don't really see a time or place where having no tags at all is good
It's fine if you like it simple.
The narrative of having a flail is also enough for some people.
It’s just simple
It’s also the triad between the one handed 1d8 piercing/slashing/bludgeoning sap gang between longsword, Morningstar and flail
Not respectively
Rapier, Warhammer, Warpick?
Warpick I forgot, the other two aren’t sap
I mean, the only 2 reasons you would want to pick a Morningstar over a Rapier (aside from the obvious of loving Morningstar weapons) is using strength and really needing that 10 extra starting gold
And sap
(Weapon mastery)
I keep forgetting we prefer different editions
Indeed. Weapon masteries are great
They can be, yeah
But it also is hard to give up Assassin crits
I don't have favorite classes, but it is hard to turn down crit builds
Those are kinda annoying to get anyway with needing Surprised
So I don’t mind the change
Plus I don’t love assassin anyway
Plus, rogues now have a lot more flare with cunning strike
Assassin + Actor feat goes pretty hard
hello folks
Yes
Absolutely
Yes you can Ready: Move
Please don't Ready: Dash Action...
Why nottt. Sometimes you just gotta go fast in a burst
Because Dash, you gain extra movement equal to your Speed for the current turn. But that does not mean you can move.
I looked this up just there and no
I love dnd
very first session, we are splitting the party
Should I feel bad for torturing my character?
Anyway yeah hold whatever your edition considers the action to actually move
no, thats what they are for
Then again, movement isnt an action is it?
Its not but the Ready action allows you to move up to your Speed OR an action
though to be honest, if our characters knew we wrote their backstories, they would kill us
Kinda if youre expressing genuine sadistic fantasies tbh
thats just dnd
Ah cool good to know i do ready by commonsenseimprov as dm
The ready action is a whole can of worms sometimes
Not when i play it
Definitely a thing though but not one im comfortable with in my games
I assure you i would never fire a desintegration ray at a living being IRL
I don’t explore statistic fantasies I just grab some of my trauma and drizzle it onto them
That doesnt make it sadism
Then no you shouldnt feel bad i think
Sure you can beat people without enjoying it but that's not dnd
Youre just expressing yourself
Enjoying combat isnt the same as enjoying the specific element of pain and torture
Are all boxers sadists to you?
I had someone tell me that I should stop giving my OC’s trauma because I am a horrible person if I do
Nahhh
Probably joking
I just needed a second opinion
Its the kind of banter thing you say like "oh youre so evil"
No, they were completely serious. They started a whole fight over it so that’s why I needed the second opinion.
I think some trauma stuff should be discussed at session 0
It could help facilitate processing your own trauma to some degree but...
In my game we don't have canibalism for example because thats one of the players trigger points
Just remind them that those OC’s are a projection of your ideals and experiences. They’re pretty much your creativity and emotions put onto a page.
Idk how this would make you a bad person tbh
Maybe let others know what you are doing
Fictional characters are there to be tortured, metaphorically or otherwise. Put through the wringer, heartbroken, beaten up and knocked down.
Or give them a happy life in the woods with their spouse and children, up to you
They’re there to experience anything pretty much
This person is not even a part of my DND campaign that I have the character for they just started a fight with me because I was yapping about it on a website where I have my OCs and stuff
your profile picture is so gross i love it
Oh then youre just around someone sensitive
Either accomodate them, have the DM kick them out for not fitting into the game, or leave yourself
3 options
That does change when you start roleplaying them tho
Everyone at the table should be comfortable
thanks, discord ruined the banner ratio so there used to be a whole beast but now its much smaller
If 2 ppl have conflict, you gotta either find compromise or remove one
Sorry for dragging this into this server. I just need some opinions. I thought I should rewrite my OC‘s entire backstory.
The only bad choice is to ignore it because then one is uncomfortable
Its an option
Youre not evil for it but you may still want to do it. Thats up to you
If you want to play with this person, its the only choice you really have
If you dont mind if they stay or not, you can stand your ground
Would that take your action or just your movement then
(Might get you removed though if the rest of the table feels the same)
With a little cabin? And a wood burning stove? Sounds idyllic!
Yupadoo
The problem is this person is not even a part of my DND campaign. They were just reading my OC‘s backstory and just started complaining about it in the comments.
You lose action on your turn, and use your reaction to apply the prepared action move
Ignore them then
That’s what happens later in my OC’s story
The Ready Action is your Action.
Which you use with a custom trigger you set & Reaction to use whatever you Readied with the Ready Action
As long as your post abides by server rules, there is no issue. Some people will disagree with what you do
I know it feels bad to be shouted at by sensitive people but its all you can really do
Try to sympathise with them probably having a reason for their limitation and move on
and than you kill them in cold blood?
I just take critiques on my OC is seriously so I feel like I have to change my OC because this person feels like my OC is trash
do i need to buy something for dnd?
saw someone post a link to dnd beyond and it was 60 usd
No, though you might be giving me ideas
Be strong
To be honest there is a compelling tragic backstory, that at some point just turns into a "A Series of Unfortunate Events" the book series
There will always be some people saying this until you strip all the depth from something
i didnt even click the banner to see the Beast, it just keeps getting better and better thats great
feel free to just overdo it if you feel like it, tragedy and comedy are the two sides of the same coin
Its all dealers choice yup
backflips
Frontflips
She already has a tragic backstory, but at the end of the DND campaign she gets a happy ending
side flips
You can’t always decide what happens at the end
"And now after all of those years of suffering he got a dog... that was run over by a passing carriage the very same day, than he got hit with a bucket of piss from the window"
The campaign has already ended! What do you mean?
Flips you off
I stand corrected
Well youre still right
invert inside out flips
Its just not relevant here
Well anyway if you want an edgy tragic backstory bordering on comedy due to how overdone the suffering is, feel free to do it
Not necessarily what is happening but yeah true
well they made a tragic backstory character, played it and got a happy ending at the end of the campaign
Im really not sure why are we even talking about
I wish I had someone to yap too about my OC’s backstory but none of my friends like DND
oh guess thats why
whats a blood hunter?
Because the backstory probably is quite miserable and involves trauma, so the random commenter insulted them
Its a little funny when sensitive pursuit ends up trying to put down someone who is actually expressing their own trauma
Isnt that the whole point?
I mean, its DnD
Every second DnD character is a tortured orphan, the ratio is slightly higher with rogues and wierdly enough lower with warlocks
If I eat sm1 in dnd how many turns would it take (say I’m a human level 3 fighter and they are aswell)
uhhh
Probably about 7200 turns
well aside from the weirdness of the question, hundreds, if not thousands of turns
Eating an entire humanoid your size takes long
Hm
Honestly, that would probably not be possible in a single day
.
What about just there arms
An hour is 600 turns
Huh canibalism talk was not really on my bingo card today
How long would it take you to eat 2 raw armsized meats?
We have a #character-discussion channel for that, as long as it's a D&D character.
wait
I've made a character sheet for Kas the Bloody-Handed it took over 2hours
is my character like only good?
So, i don't like Dhmpir are still humanoids, they should be undead
what a year, huh
it's January
aren't they like, not vampires though,,,'
I can eat a 300g stake in about 5-7 minutes irl with cutlery having to cut it in small ish bite sizes but with out I could do it in about 3-5 minutes*
there is a reason humans invented cooking
The Dhampir stats can be used for stuff that isn' undead.
I dont think you could eat a raw enemy in any amount of turns in dnd combat
You should take the Chef feat next level and it'll be done within the hour
Even just 1 limb would take at least an hour i feel like
probably would get sick and pass out before, yeah
Or get killed because you are busy eating
Does rare count?
No
tthey're half vampires,,,,,,,
oh i simply meant that them being humanoid feeding on other humanoids is technically a canibalism, that would not be a problem if they were undead since they can't really gain the benefits from undead and constructs
Too much information for a corporate server
What’s corporate
Watch out you dont get removed
But okay
This is the official dnd server, with company interest and public image considerations
Sorry I didn’t think
if i have understood right
tthis is just a corpo server,, not a lot of freedom 😭
monk: gets power from within
cleric: prays for power
Oh yeah wrong server sorry guys, Seeya (please don’t remove me and for context I can explain before I get banned if I do)
what server is it you prefer?
I forgot I was in the dnd server not another smaller one I’m in which was were talking about dnd and real life which is why I asked how many turns cause one of use is playing a human vampire
ahh
do you guys vc there?
For the campaign yes which is why our sound board is full
i tried to avoid the abandoned orphan archetype, so my first dnd character was a nepo baby
Were they a sorcerer? Make it extra nepo baby?
of course, his dad was a gold dragon king who died 26k years ago
Hello
well its not a dad then, that would make your character at least 26k years old
due to bag of holding accidents he spent that time unhatched in the astral plane
Im new to playing DnD. Never played a tabletop game before in my life unless snakes and ladders as a kid counts lol. I have recently installed baldurs gate 3 and played it nonstop for 2 days here now since installing 😂 i know its nothing like actual DnD but it made me fascinated to learn and i hope I'll get along with all of you guys here
he's like, 15, and very diminutive
so he was Kenku?
It's a great way to get introduced to "sort of D&D but video game" for sure. Once you decide to play actual D&D, the basic rules are free!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
half-dragon
Half-Dragon Half Kenku?
see, that was the issue
the other half was supposed to be elven, but that'd mean birth, not hatching
so that gold dragon got shifted into grandpa status
still half-dragon, but the mom is the dragon half
well you did said your dad was a dragon and your character is a half-dragon
and that your character hatched out of an egg
that would imply the mother of non-dragon race had to lay an egg
so... Kenku
i had to rethink and redo it accordingly exactly because of that
the initial idea didnt let him be stranded unhatched in the astral plane for ages
I've already installed the app, cant wait to play my first campaign
frankly i don't see the reason why shapeshifter like golden dragon would even limit its biology to just one sex
that ancestor had a very specific elfsona, but I can see that happen
I dont see why either. Itd just take the form most pleasing to it, whatever that may be.
I have a question of you dont mind me asking, can i use the same character in different campaigns?
That's a solid maybe. I make a new character for every game I join.
Not just because every game usually has their own little quirks and rules for creating characters, but also because there is no expectation that you could somehow transfer the story of a character from one game to the next.
yes but it wouldn't be the same character
it would be the same baseline
No like say im done playing wirh one group because of stuff in L I F E happens idk but i grow attached to a character
ah i see you are trying to capture a lightning in a bottle
i played this half-dragon in two campaigns because the first one fell apart
I want to try playing Centaur again but i don't have an idea for the class
the second one also fell apart as i realised i had to dm a campaign to have a responsible dm, so he's been demoted to npc status forever
The issue with keeping the same character is most other people make new characters. When youre joining a campaign later or even just being at session 0, I recommend being willing to fill what the party needs. Whether that be a martial class, or a caster, or a little of both as a half caster.
So i take it the party really needs to come together to discuss things before playing
i don't think it's so urgent to have a "balanced" party composition
no, lol
play whatever you like
who cares about party composition
my party has three bards but i know how to accomodate them so they'll be fine
I do. Ofc I've been playing OSE recently and uh...a well rounded party means less people losing half their levels 😅
DM can always specialise their party by few tactical magic item gifts that just happen to fill the role for what party needs
I'm sorry, half their levels?
Thats the rule of OSE. You die, you create a new character with half the level rounded down.
What is OSE?
Why is the first thing I read here discussion about egg laying
And why am I not surprised in the slightest
some systems are like that
DnD is on casual side
every game of Call of Cthulu ends with your character dying
wow
Similar to ADND. Basically hardcore DND with a lot more realism.
wow, that rule absolutely sucks
Ou
it just fantasy biology
I've only ever played DND ^^'
Lovecraft was a bit morbid like that
Dragonsbane is a nice more adventure type of system
Is there a place I can advertise a D&D server?
Even in regular DND, I find asking what everyone else is playing and picking a class bases off that is fun for me and everyone else. No healers? Clerics fine with me. 2 casters and a fighter? I can play a Paladin. I pick my class first and base everything else off my class.
ty
Gold points or gold coin.
Gold
guess im wretched then
no healers, no problem
DM can accommodate by reducing the price on healing potions
2 casters and a fighter? that doesn't really say much since those casters can flex into any "role"
Just play whatever you like because ultimately roles in the party do not matter
You'll get a starting amount to spend and tbh most DMs I play with dont do "Lifestyle".
does magic initiate bard have healing word
what do i do after i make my character though?
i might do that next time a campaign lacks a healer but i'm still playing a sorcerer
It should but this is 2014 rules, then? Because Magic Initiate: Bard doesn't exist in 2024.
yup exactly
Party of 3
We have artificer with gun
⭐ Druid
I picked bard cuz frick it we bard
I hate playing the tank, so I just started healmaxxing so we don't need one! (Also false life + aid just makes me the tank anyways)
I expect my DM to give me challenging encounters. Expecting my DM to hand my party magic items if we didn't think to coordinate just...doesnt sit well with me? Sure he can give out some magic items we'd want as rewards and stuff, but I dont expect the DM to do party balancing.
What happens when everyone is playing but one guy has to leave an never comes back
Find another.
"Tank" isn't an actual thing in 5E, so of course you don't need one. The real way to make sure enemies don't hurt allies is to use Control effects, which means wizards and such are the actual "tanks."
Ofc its fine to play him again
abjuration wizard maxxing
You got robbed of a proper journey, why not start another
Enemy can't hurt you if theyr already dead
If the lack of roles is an issue the thing can be very easily corrected
hence why i don't really care about party composition
DM will challange you with encounters regardless of your party composition
my poor sorc got robbed of his first 2 journeys, i'm still keeping him in reserve
It's a standard thing, when DM sees you have feather fall, you are more likely to encounter situations that require it
same thing with any of your character decisions
I'm dying to play a divine soul sorc, I need a third campaign .....
same
Mm yeah, and why should the last person have to settle for a class because of party composition. Everyone should be able to play what they'd like to and enjoy
extreme decision paralysis though so if i'm dming for a divine sorc i'll probably give them a few free spells
dnd but for masochists
Here's the thing. If we have 2 sorcerers and a wizard and 1 fighter, I'm not gonna play another wizard just because I want too. Idk I play IRL 99% of the time, and when I join or someone else joins, first thing after hellos is, "so whats everyone else playing? Waddya need?"
Maybe its a mindset thing ig.
i'd lowkey still play a bladesinger
I mean, if you want to play a wizard play a wizard
especially if that class can be very easly customized
But the thing I think is... Why should you have to compromise because you joined last? Why can someone else not compromise?
...So everyone has fun?
Honestly i think tanking is a thing
Play an all wizard party. The Book Club (Sorc is the member who never actually studies/reads)
Its just not a videogame tank
Frontliners are a thing in D&D I feel
Yes exactly
Specialists hitting backline doesnt mean the front and back are the same
If everyones having fun, I'm having fun. If we're using our brains and buffing when we need, healing when we need, and action surging when we need, I'm fine.
Watch a squishy sorcerer run into the front lines and see what happens
Ya just gotta charge in with shield, mage armor, and thunderwave.
Add stuff like battlemaster, sentinel and uhhh lifelink or whatever and tanking is definitely a thing
Armour dips fixes this
I said squishy
they fill the role of area denial... so basically druid
I said squishy
if the class has enough subclasses to have variety it's fine
all three of my bards are gonna fill a different niche
I feel like a point is being a bit missed her when some PCs are squishy
My 22 HP wizard is NOT going in the front, unless its to immediately fey step out of it
Yes you can build them differently to not be squishy, but some are more squishy than others.
Frontliners draw a line that most enemies want to avoid crossing
That is the frontliners job
lore bard will be a flexible support caster, swords bard will do flourishes with hexblade stuff, the glamour bard is there to look pretty and disappoint
Thats bladesinger's whoke gimmick.
Divination wizard over here
Though if I'm being real, I'm an evocation wizard kinda fella. Lightning bolt and fireball without fear.
I make big boom
For the record: i never said any specific classes cant frontline
i remember playing a bladesinger with a newbie dm and he made every single mob ignore shocking grasp
I said squishy chars exist and therefore less squishy too
So there is still a concept of 'This person has more HP and more AC/defenses so can handle being in melee /taking hits more than the low AC/low HP character'
bro didnt want yall to win 😭
Haha I got my own little horror story with magic and a new dm that I'm pretty sure everyone heres heard before.
it was sort of annoying, why did i pick the cantrip if it doesn't let me disengage because the dm decided he really wanted to hit me
Aggro is not a thing, therefore the MMO concept of tanking is not a thing. You can be a large presence on the field using Control effects to hamper enemies while also Support effects to defend allies, but true MMO style tanking is not really there.
Sore loser mentality
Yeah exactly
wait tell tell
What sort of enemies were you fighting?
Being beefy and tough by itself is not "tanking."
lizardmen, most of the time
It is if you put yourself in way of danger
Depends on DM. My DM would let me roar as a free action and try to attract attention. Which worked until a cleric healed me once and they got tunnel vision.
Lightning lizardmen?
plain lizardmen, underwater
Dm of the year
Going in the frontline to protect the less beefy character is tanking tho
eh i forgive the guy, he really didn't know how to balance encounters and we did wipe the floor with everything
Yes, it requires homebrew, but I'm talking about the actual RAW mechanics.
Yes, but how is you being there actually protecting anyone when they could just .. walk past you? Or shoot past you? Or cast spells past you?
Granted the change to Grapple in 2024 makes the idea of tanking a bit closer to reality.
ranged attacks with attack rolls do get disadvantage, or if they walk past you and swing their sword at the cleric in the back, protection fighting style
Depends on the enemy, are they intelligent enought to figure out that it's better to attack the squishy mage behind the tank?
Even then, frontlines exist for a reason
See the idea of a "tank" is basically a big tough character who stands in front and prevents enemies from hitting allies. Most of the ways that characters can actually prevent that is held by full casters because the heavily armored classes generally only have soft control over enemies. Imposing Disadv on them to attack anyone but you isn't a hard form of control.
Walking past enemy frontlines presents risks
the DM can simply choose to ignore the martial
Making tactical mistakes is DM dependent and not in the mechanics.
So my first time playing DND with a friend who was the DM, our first encounter was a fire lizard with I think 30 HP? I was a sorcerer with frostbolt. So I put 2 + 2 together and figured ice would be effective and hit it with frost bolt. It dealt double damage and tue encounter ended in 2 rounds. Next session, DM swapped us to a magic point system with cantrips being 5MP, level 1 spells being 10 MP, ETC. Anyways, with a level 2 sorcerer I had 10 MP. So either 2 cantrips per day or 1 lvl 1 spell. Safe to say, I learned really quickly how to handle melee as a squishy character with I think 5 HP. Probably why I'm so focused about party balance nowadays if I'm being real.
i've been thinking of working on this, , , , to just, make this a thing,,?
distance is also a real contributor, it's easier to hit the paladin in front of you than the warlock blasting you from on top of a cliff
And moreso in 2024, yes, but still hard to see a true MMO style "tank."
Did i say they cant?
Again i agree mmo style not a thing
Plenty of people have, in #homebrew, but that's altering the mechanics of the game.
But tanking has become a huge term by now and refers to anyone beefy who tries to partially protect the party through taking focus, attacks, blocking positions etc
Point is, I feel like using the term "tank" in a D&D context gives people coming into the game an incorrect idea of how the game works.
Its good to let people know you cant hardtank or hardheal in dnd but denying it completely is just wrong
Absolutely but that doesnt mean you should say you cant at all
Tanking is important and a thing that does more then just area denial.
Its a good note for noobs
We should be talking about Control and Support abilities. Telling people they can "tank" in the game is going to set them up for misunderstanding how the mechanics work and having a worse time playing.
You teach fighters how to tank, I'll teach casters how to cast Enlarge and Haste.
Then tell them the long version
I really dislike cheap shorthands that cause misunderstanding in the long run. Like "you can't cast more than one leveled spell per turn" which isn't and hasn't ever been a rule in 5E.
Youre misinforming on the basis of doubting peoples ability to understand, to avoid explaining it properly
Also, i think most ppl talking right now arent new
So these safety rails are just false
I see new people on this server every day.
And the 42 thousand people who are online in this server?
Arent the ones youre talking to
Sure they are, this is a public chat room.
Youre telling a bunch of experienced players that you cant tank
Teach casters on how to use Crowd Control better, Haste will make you take down a party member once they break concentration (new players isn't going to understand the importance of res:con and con saves in general)
How do people Homebrew?
Experienced players should know enough about the actual mechanics to understand the difference, and be versed enough to talk about thegame in a way that is at least not misleading newcomers.
Might be a stupid question, but I have no idea
It's when you make a cocktail at home /j
There's a whole community of people over in #homebrew who would love to tell you, probably.
I‘m quite good at that actually, and so is @ember oasis 😂
yeah i've been in there probably more than any other channel but i have myself found issues in interacting there,, it's a meta thing but there are soo many backhanded comments and unhelpful responses, if you get a response at all, , , plus the extreme averseness to changing the core system at all and hitting me with "you know that'll mean you'll have to change everything related to that right" like. boy. i get it. stop mansplaining. 😭 sorry , , ,
(There will be also many, many people lurking and who might be new)
Thank you so much, I really need to pin these channels down for me to find them better
And this is the exact opposite of what I'm doing. I'm not misinforming, I'm being more specific and more informative by going the long way and not using the cheap shorthand that the term "tank" represents.
Nvm I found it. At least that one
True but telling new people they cant tank gives off a whole different impression.
wwhat did you wanna add,,,,
dm really had it out for you but valid reaction
I do agree though with the general idea of sometimes needing to deconstruct short hands and terms, because misconceptions (or differing boundaries/understandings of that term) can cause miscommunications. Like what 'Tanking' is, and how tanking in a different system/video game is different to in D&D, but there is still a similar concept and idea.
If you scroll back to all my comments, I think you will find that I never said "you can't tank." What I said is that "tanking" isn't a real thing in 5E, but that Control and Support abilities are.
It isn’t?
just made a character, and it says i cant download the sheet cause i havent finished it even though i did and cant find what i am missing
Perhaps the inventory?
i think it's a #ddb-support
New dm, new player, it happens.
I always found ‘only one leveled spell per round’ to be ridiculous if I had the actions. I’ll run out of spell slots really fast that way
Nope. You could use haste to cast two fireballs. But the rule was 'If you cast a spell that isn't a cantrip as a bonus action, you can't cast non cantrip spell with your standard action'.
It was specifically about bonus actions.
It was also more to keep combat fast than about balance.
Does this rule exist in 2024?
I think its per turn. If it was per round nobody would take shield
Cartomancer feat
What can I saaaaaaay except double fireball?
I'm the n1 cartomancer feat enjoyer
Nowadays people get around the 2024 rule by playing wild magic sorcerer.
In 2024 it is 'One spell slot spent per turn' So only one leveled spell a turn.
One Spell with a Spell Slot per Turn
On a turn, you can expend only one spell slot to cast a spell. This rule means you can't, for example, cast a spell with a spell slot using the Magic action and another one using a Bonus Action on the same turn.
- p236
But in 2014 it was specifically about bonus action use. You could use haste to cast two leveled spells.
Neat. I’ve broken this rule a lot then. Oops
So spells that are like 1 use without expending a spell slot are usable? With a leveled spell slot one?
However I believe the exclusion to this rule is spells that are cast without slots by ability or item go around this rule.
You’re not using a slot so this rule wouldn’t affect them
2014, if you use a Bonus action to cast any spell:
You can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.
@lyric viper can I use my magic iniate sanctuary with another leveled spell on the same turn?
Might be best to move those questions to #dnd-rules !
Yes definitely
But in 2024, yes
For future reference tho #dnd-rules is better
I am now very happy
Hello now very happy, I’m Nugget
:)
But yeah the short hand rule used in the community of 'can't cast two levelled spells in a turn' for 2014 wasn't actually true, but a way of simplifying the more complicated action interaction rules. (and also not true for 2024 where you can just not if you have to use slots)
Hello now very happy, I’m Jolteon0163
That seems a bad way to say it now that I know the real rule
Had to commit to the bit
for example Warlock can use their pack spell and follow it up by high level addition
Yes, hence why I corrected it everytime anyone said it.
Milestone is also different i the books to community usage. And people will have differing ideas on when optimisation becomes powergaming/munchkin gaming, or what counts as railroading, or bad vs good metagaming so on.
The terms are useful as shorthands and quickly conveying an idea that might be familiar, but always worth to occasionally reevaluate them (especially if miscommunication seems to be happening in a conversation because someone used the shorthand term and the people involved are thinking of different related concepts- like videogame tanking vs D&D tanking so on)
“You level up when I say you level up”.
Book milestone: Give XP based on quest completion.
I'm very thankful that the Bonus Action Spell rule got replaced with one that is much simpler.
Yeah, same
Though the "one leveled spell per turn" myth is persistent.
I have to sit on my hands so many times to stop myself from correcting that technicality when I see it here.
And also people should understand that One Spell Slot Per Turn is only for spells.
Using spell slots for non-spells doesn't trigger the rule.
What’s stopping a level 20 wizard from breaking the economy? Make a simulacrum, have it wish for riches and buffs, repeat. And if your BBEG is a wizard, why aren’t they spamming wish whenever they please?
Because D&D doesn't do economy simulation and also wish stress exists.
Wish stress for the caster, yes. But if the simulacrum fails the stress test, who cares? Make a new one.
They only get the one slot anyway.
Not to mention the books are just books. Who's to say a celestial might not take an interest in someone demonstrating their power so flagrantly? Or something infernal?
🤷♂️ back to the first point
And also cuz, why would you want to crash the economy?
More an indirect consequence of infinite funds than a motive.
Nothing, but what's the point, D&D isn't an economy simulator. Also NPCs do not follow PC class rules. Even a "wizard" might not have Wish.
If there is a sudden influx of gold and stuff, the world would perhaps simply adjust to that. What riches means could change.
Could be an interesting plot point.
At the very least, true resurrection would become a lot easier if you have wizards making diamonds for cheap.
Oh sure.
If you're level 20, you have the capability to affect the world. I can't see how anyone would think that's a one-way relationship.
Mhm. And I have yet to meet a wizard that would do anything for cheap
Wizarding is expensive
"You're paying for my education"
Personally, I have yet to meet a wizard. Maybe they’re just rare in Australia.
That's what they want you to think
I feel like we just have sorcerers here, and they all took wild magic
I mean logically the wizard would have enough intelligence to know that making tens of millions of GP would be bad eventually, so they’re not liable to do that frequently. But what about having its simulacrum wish that it (and its trusted generals) had resistance to certain damage types?
They have them in America, but you really really don't want to meet them.
That or some dang Druid is messing with us
Resistance granted by wish doesn’t have a limit, from RAW.
They might do that eventually, sure. Whether or not that's "logical", I don't know. People within the world don't have rules text as precise as we do.
If any, I bet it would be a djinn.
I think there’s one monster that casts it when they die? No clue which one.
genies can have the ability to do so on behalf of others, yes
Djinns have a chance of knowing the Wish spell.
Good to know
Though I can’t think of one that doesn’t have strict restrictions on themselves
Would the djinn suffer from the stress, or is there some magic shenanigans that takes the brunt of the causality?
Sure, it says that the genies don't suffer the stress.
Oh, and the creature that can cast it and then be destroyed is the Zodar.
But they can also only cast it to grant a wish to someone else.
Ah, so they don’t suffer the stress but their power is limited so it can only be used for others.
Maybe the djinn wished to not suffer the stress, and that’s how it backfired?
I do feel the need to point out that djinni are one of the four genies that can do it. Djinni are specifically the air version. There are also Efreeti, Dao and Marids.
Yeah. Maybe I should stick with genie when referring to them?
Probably more connected to the real world mythology they're taken from
“Elemental that grants wishes”.
At least one BBEG can. Spoilers for Dungeon of the Mad Mage: ||Halaster of course||
If you were to gain three class levels in real life, which class and subclass would you pick?
Would you say more of here are playing 2014 or 2024 now?
Probably 2024.
Hard to say, we don't exactly have stats for that.
Probably warlock with the celestial subclass. Getting to heal others with little downtime required.
You assume that because it‘s more recent?
First thought is Divination Wizard.
Yes. Not many people play 4e, or 3e, after all.
Also divination wizard would be cool.
That and I think it's also just an improvement on 2014. Can still use lots of stuff from 2014 but benefit from the more solid rules of 2024.
I’d pick echo fighter so I can get more work done.
Ah, but they are also very different editions, rather than rule updates more akin to XGtE/TCoE/MPMM.
There's def going to be a lot of folk still using either just 2014 or a mix of 2014 and 2024 books.
But as newer players come in and folk pick up new books, 2024 will likely become more and more used over pure 2014.
It‘s not the same kind of leap though
Mm. You couldn't exactly mix 3e and 4e or 4e and 5e. You'd have to actually convert things across and the lore and system changes made carrying a game on from one edition to the other much harder.
Cause ngl I keep circling back on which one to learn. It really sucks to want to learn D&D in 2026
A what fighter?
I'd go with 2024.
Fighter: Echo Knight.
Second thought is Cartographer Artificer. I know cell phones exist, but I like the idea of being able to just magically know where my loved ones are at all times.
2024 is going to be more and more relevant, while 2014 is going to be less and less so.
And you could make magic items, which is a bonus.
Before 2024, it was basically recommended for new players to get the 2014 core books and also XGtE/TCoE/MPMM in order to be on the same page as most games.
the 2024 core books are intentionally all those updates and changes in one place, with some extra
Cleric is easily a big pick overall
Especially with how Revivify works
I announced to my players that during the summer we're gonna focus a lot less on linear storytelling and focus more on a sandbox type world where they choose their own quests and that can evolve into the story but they can really just pivot to whatever
Which subclass though?
Aight, I guess I just have to try ignoring the illustrations in the player’s handbook cause I really don‘t see myself in them at all. Very off putting to me. 2014 also had more of this nice rough vibe to me, but that‘s just my personal impression
They're ... just examples? You don't have to make characters based on the illustrations.
I like that there is a much broader variety of flavor shown in the 2024 book, gets me thinking of how to flavor my own creations.
I'm a big fan of the Dance Bard picture.
The main wizard image is chefs kiss
Ig tanking exists
Its just that there is no point to it
The mere sight of them is already giving me bad vibes, that‘s the thing. I really have to try ignoring them and focus on what‘s written on the pages. But that wouldn‘t be the first time I have to go through something I‘m uncomfortable with just to have fun. I enjoyed the older European inspired aesthetics that leaned into Tolkien, not the modern American Aesthetics that lost their timelessness to me
You really that discomfited by the illustrations? I don't know what to say, I mean you're obviously valid in feeling how you feel, but I didn't think the illustrations were such a huge thing. Also, personally the more D&D moves away from being straitjacketed into Eurofantasy and Tolkien, the better I feel.
Mhm, I feel the same. And also, D&D is heroic fantasy, so the new illustrations fill exactly that vision for me.
Hard to say. Too used to 2014
I enjoy that they're broadening out from just representing European-based cultures in the core art, seeing as D&D has always included more than that.
Howdy everyone! I am new to this server but I am not new to the hobby 🙂 Started as a kid watching my cousin's parents group play AD&D 1e, to playing CRPGs that used AD&D 2e and D&D 3e for their ruleset, and in highschool I had my first real TTRPG experience with D&D 3.5. From there I explored other systems and found my way to 5e 2024 rules.
I will say that I am really excited for the Psion class since my introduction to Psionics in D&D was reading about it in the AD&S 1e premium re release of the Players Handbook. And it also helped me gain a better appreciation for the Bard class and in game design in general.
But nice to meet you all 🙂
The 2014 halflings look quite odd to me.
But if I had to choose a domain
Probably Life Domain
I mean, even 3 levels in the class means you can speed up physical wounds and use Lesser Restoration to cure poisons, blindness, paralysis, or deafness
And if you wanted to extend the levels we would hypothetically get past 3, like getting 9 levels...
Americanized things lose grace to me. Europe has a rich culture
I get it though if what you're imagining for your fantasy is very Tolkien based, which was intentionally very focused on European folklore. Older D&D as a core did seem pretty anchored there and fantasy written in English drew a lot from it.
But I feel like all D&D settings were more than that. Greyhawk was very American from the get go, based more on a pseudo-european/American land, with mesoamerican cultures too.
D&D was always Americanized.
Death literally goes from the worst thing ever to deal with to "Would you like them brought back with Revivify or Raise Dead today? Buy now, and we will throw in a Death Ward for free!"
I don‘t see them balanced out though. One pretty much overtakes the other. If it had at least been a healthy middle way, that would have been a different thing.
I mean.. D&D is American. Written and created by American's, adapting what fantasy resources they had access to, into their own worlds, inspired by their own cultures too.
So is it really any surprise at all that Clerics would probably be the #1 choice if you could have it irl?
Ahh, I think this is one of those 'Novelty' things. Not sure what the exact term is for it, but when used to something being the main majority by a lot, when it starts becoming more balanced even by a bit (Including things being like.. 90% Male /10 % female, to going to 80% male/ 20% female, or predominantly of one ethnicity or culture to another) it seems like a lot has changed because suddenly the minority has doubled! . Or more even!
It's noticable! But.. that doesn't mean it's not balanced.
...what did I just walk in to?
Also if you want to be inclusive, use all ethnicities that are there. American fiction only knows two it seems, caucasian American and African American. And that is pretty ignorant to me. Individuals from Asia, Mexico etc. are still missing.
Equal representation
I think they have been? There are definitely Latin American inspired designs in the core books too.
Hey everyone. Would anyone like to help me do a little bit of homebrewing.
One of my players has recently accquired a staff of the magi. And I want to give the other characters something that will have roughly the same power/utility. But all the other legendary magic items, though powerful seem to lack the versatility of the staff.
Yeah the new orc art is super cool
The artwork for chromatic orb too
#homebrew sounds like the perfect place to ask
Thanks, I overlooked that channel. (there's so many!)
There are! 😅 If you ever need it #channel-guide can help out!
Hello mr. engineer
where can I check it out? in the new PHB?
Ibelieve there's a ddb article that showed off the new art as some point
There are way more things illustrated than white and black in the new phb
Yep! it's one example of orcs and was intentionally going with the idea that if they're often a semi-nomadic species, given gifts in order to travel many terrains and places, picked out a hardier terrain (desert like), and drew from cultures that adapted to those places- like wide brim hats akin to sombreros.
Also yeah, I've been looking through illustrations rn and even in the first 12 I see, on ddb, I can see hispanic and asian representation.
Also TBH while things could always be more I don't think it's a fair critique to say something along the lines of 'If you can't represent everything, don't try at all' 😅
It frankly would be impossible to try and make art work representing every unique culture in our own world in a fantasy book.
Indeed, it is also a fantasy book, I would not expect a fantasy world to represent many of our irl cutlures in general.. Because it's a fantasy world that is not our world lol
I think settings are also really important here. If you have an idea of what type of fantasy you want to run, low, high, grimdark, noblebright, more East Asian inspired, more Mesoamerican inspired, more european inspired- what setting and what part of that setting you pick means a lot.

This is the youtube video link to the 2024 players handbook preview video on the official dungeons and dragons youtube channel. That link should also get you to a timestamp where said art is shown.
Hey was a stranger things dnd set announced cause i vaguely remember it was
isnt that like a graphis novel?
Already out. Saw it in a game store when I waa getting an expansion for dominion.
oh dayum is it on amazon?
Should be. Probably on the official website. See which onell deliver it to you faster and cheaper lol
thanks!
60 dollars!?
dndb needs to add regional pricing man
I was about to say for a collab book its only $10 more till you mentioned regional pricing 😅 some regions really be getting screwed over.
Ah. Lovely
I mean first of all I don't think anything is being Americanized? Because of course it was American to begin with, but I think the trend has been more one of broadening out to a more global influence of culture rather than focusing on one. Also, more places than Europe have rich culture. As much as I'm not a fan of my home country at the moment, America also has rich culture, please don't denigrate it to elevate Europe to some lofty ideal. Not even to mention that Europe as some monolith of culture is kind of sus.
60 dollars seems alright to me
The word I believe you're looking for is "corporatized" and tbf...its not just america anymore.
Good afternoon. How are yall
Its illustrated, big format, hardback and dollars are kinda down right now
Its also new
Seems alright to me
For the USA? Sure. Other regions? Yeah....not so much 😅
To change the topic
Not sure why, but I keep hearing the question of "What class/levels from DnD for irl?"
And I keep going back to the answer of Cleric
Well what regions
I mean, I spotted people who look like beyond just white people and black people in there.
Wait, why are you pinging me to change the topic I'm talking about?
Turkey. India. Most of South America, etc.
I didnt know turkey but the others true
Wasn't asking you to. More of a "wanted to talk about something else, and why not tell you about it"
I was kinda focussed on western europe uk and america i guess
how much is the hellfire set in the US?
the full thing IG?
For IRL DND I'm going Wild Magic Sorcerer or Chrono Wizard.
we are getting screwed over, but then again a company will only offer regional pricing in a region with enough demand
But seriously. Some cantrips and low level spells would be OP if it existed IRL, hence my decision of Life Domain Cleric
Imagine being able to fix expensive personal equipment like consoles and laptops because you keep casting the Mending Cantrip until it's good as new
and then again if regional pricing is not provided then the original cost threshold is too big for people to get into dnd
Spare the dying
Save like all the lives in a hospital daily for no cost and become rich and loved
doctors will be DONE
No
Spare the Dying was next, yes. Literally turning a trip to the hospital and massive ambulance fee and precious time wasted into waking up like it's a Saturday hangover
They need to heal the cause
You put them on ice
No, you still need doctors, but spare the dying would be amazing in EA/ A&E
Youre like the "if he only had more days to recover"
Let medicine work, get to surgery alive etc
And any temporary symptoms couldnt kill them either
First level spells too. Cure Wounds, Guiding Bolt, especially Create or Destroy Water
As much as healing would be nice, waiting to see what magic effect happens with wild magic surge just...sounds too fun. Do I suddenly turn into a potted plant for 6 seconds? Or do I strike 3 people randomly with lightning? Or teleport 30 feet away?
Too risky
Thaumaturgy would be great too ig?
Spare the dying would help with like... Basic wounds I wuold think. If someone had a disease that was killing them they're just "take damage" immediately probably.
Prestidigitation, Elementalism, Thaumaturgy and Druidcraft woudl be the big ones, Minor Illusion as well
Lifes a risk. And the wild magic table irl (at least 2024) is a risk I'm willing to take.
Mage hand for those who need it
It would be... until you hurt the ones you care about
I'm a little scared to bring up the striking things with lightning as an example
druidcraft is by far the weakest cantrip
