Oh no the species part isn't that hard cuz I have a rough idea, I was thinking of the class
Monks, maybe
Can I have white pupils but not be blind
having a teleport from your species
telport from you class (like shadow monk)
any magic item that allows teleports
Will take note of Monks, what else could I do...
As a wizard
I'd favour warlock for the versatility. Paladin has always stuck with me since the Elenium books.
A vampire casting mist form and passing through? Or impossible?
all bards for the whole "we are a band" setup maybe?
In general flavour, or the description of your character, is up to you. For specifics, consult the DM once you've joined a group.
As a 14 years old wizard how much weight is there is
Oh fair
What race
human
Ah so I'd say around 60 pounds
depends on if its a box or a cage
Noted
Ok
Monks, Warlocks, Bards, Paladins perhaps then
More like 100. You can Google questions like "human weight by age", you know.
My choice of race is Strongheart Halflings
Hmmmm so it can be a box making everything locked. But if it's a box the people inside can't use ranged attacks or can?
with a box, nothing gets in or out
What the best language for varaint human
The one that will be most useful in your game. There is no one "best" language.
Oh ok
Finallyyyy I can type!!!1
Depends on the campaign yeah
hey DnD peeps
Speaking goblin is useless if the campaign doesn't have a single goblin
I was looking for some help with a Homebrew race
Try #homebrew
Thanks!
If you pick Human Warlock, you can have 5 origin Feats and 1 full feat at level 5, an extra full feat if you used Variant Human...
What generation method should I use
Do you have a DM and group?
If not, use Standard Array as a placeholder because your DM will want to approve of the method.
Okay
Try not to use all caps, it messes with some people's assistive reading technology.
If you're practicing making characters just choose whatever thematically makes sense
Oh fair im done anyways
Standard Array is just Point Buy with fixed numbers.
lets see standard array give you 8 16 16 8 8 16
you don't say
😉
Morning all, how're things?
I'm slowly going insane due to scheduling conflicts
I'm curious, the produce flame spell it last 10 minutes and until it ends you can hurt fire at creatures and objects, is this continual, or doe it use it up? And end the spell early? I guess it would say if it did.
I concur. The spell lets you summon some fire as a bonus action and then throw some of it as an action. You can continue throwing it after that.
If you just wanted to use it for attacking, you'd probably be better served by fire bolt instead though.
old produce flame ended the spell if you attacked but new one doesnt
That is true. I'm just trying to something with a little more range to lump onto my Elemental Monk
I'll see if I can get firebolt as part of an origin feat
Mhm. Elements monk already has respectable range just with normal attacks and later with their elemental burst at level 6.
We are doing a level 5 one shot. And I'm using the opportunity to test my next character build. Javelins would probably make sense here. But won't for the later character.
Okay. I could get Sage for Fire Bolt, but the ability scores just don't line up for Monks.
its just that you really dont want to cast a cantrip if you could use the attack action instead
as a monk
Guess I'll have to just be standard reach, which is +10 for 15 with Elemental attacks.
If Invoice Bugbear that'd be 25 right? 😂
and you got monk movement plus 15 ft reach, you can probably do without a long range option
bugbear would be 20 ft i think
20 still great, don't have to worry about opportunity attacks.
That 20ft doesn’t apply to opportunity attacks, would still be 15
Bugbear reach only applies on your turn
Was talking about me avoiding opportunity attacks, though I don't really need the Bugbear for this, as 15 is still outside of the normal 5ft for opportunity attacks.
Ah that makes sense, and even 10 ft is enough to avoid OA’s, so you’re set
15 is plenty, 20 is hella nice
No, he's OutcastSpartan
🤦♀️
You forgot the “Who’s Set? I don’t see anyone with that name here, sounds like a good fellow.”
I have failed you, master
You still have much to learn, my pupil. And tuition fees to pay
Anywho, always glad to see an elemental warrior used
They’re my favourite monk (which is my favourite class)
If I was a Halfling I could hide behind allies, and get advantage on my attacks?
You can’t hide as a BA, so it’s not the greatest, but yes
Wait hold on DM... Wait nevermind... I thought one of Monk Focuses was to hide as a bonus action, but it's dash and disengage, and dodge
Only easy way for a BA hide is cunning action I believe, unfortunately
man, bless keeps being an SS Tier spell. Yesterday our cleric cast it while we were attacked by 4 vampire spawns. Her words "Well half the group can deal radiant damage. If they hit" and then about half our attacks only hit due to the d4, which seemed mathematically improbably but happened nonetheless
And BA is used by FoB mostly anyway
Yeah, monk BA is super contested
Better than it used to be atleast
As a DM who underestimated bless when they first started, bless is soooo good
And it’s fun for the players too, cuz missing sucks
I know, right? especially what happened with like three different people "Ah, total is a 15... WAIT I HAVE BLESS" completly negating the bad feeling "Missing by 1"
Praise the Sun!
“I call upon the blessings of the gods on high, may your gaze be a boon for us lowly pilgrims!”
-# I personally really like it when players chant phrases in climatic moments when casting spells
I'm guessing taking 4 attacks normally is better than taking just two at advantage?
Yes
Oooh I wonder if that would be the same for Champion Fighters?
Yes
Same number of dice, but more potential hits.
more attacks = more chances to actually score more hit, so while advantage might increase the chances to hit in general, you could get double the damage from more attacks
its the entire reason why old True Strike was soooo bad
More opportunities for damage
Yeah
spend an action, which you could have used to attack, to get advantage on your next attack
or, you know, hit twice for the same amount of dice, and potentially hitting twice
That's why most things to give advantage come with an attack or are from a bonus action
Or for Samurai, is the reverse of turning advantage into even more attacks
I get what they were going for (niche rogue with cantrips assassinating people) but even then just using stealth was strictly better
as someone that is multiclassed into clockwork sorcerer, it is my great pleasure to deny enemies advantage sometimes. Or negate disadvantage on our attacks from their invisibility condition or whatever
it is strictly not as good as just rolling out silvery barbs, but I like my dm and dont want to torture them
A shame for the early game section for my DnD campaign was my inability to use the fun spells that Ranger has
Silver lining, being level 5 still gives me a helpful pocket of spellcasting that holds up well in the later game for campaigns
Even better, Illusionist Wizard can help me establish a trade deal of sorts: he casts Invisibility on me, I cast PWT on the team
tbf they dont get a lot of fun spells, and if your group lacks any utiltiy caster and you try to do that you will be dissappointed because of so little spell slots (poor rangers that felt tehy needed to take detect magic or aid because the cleric didnt want to)
not that aid is mandatory, but rangers live too little to do purely group spells
Not too many, but variety was just weakened more from not having 2nd level spells yet and early game enemies being primarily physical
But when the time comes for it, absorb elements will be fun
still keep reading 'Power Word ', before catching myself and realizing it's Pass Without Trace again
"Power Word: Team invisbility" is basically what pass without a trace is
you're fine lol
Getting a little ahead of myself. But it says Boon of Irresistible Offence is recommended, but looking at it it seems awful for Elemental monks. Boon of Dimensional Travel seems fun, teleport after every attack... That is... 150 feet of movent each turn without using movement speed...
nothing to be sorry for, more funny than annoying; You'd think I'd be used to it playing druid
Ah
Boon of truesight is recommended on paladin, while generally not fantastic in any situation. Its just a standard recommendation of "Yeah you probably wont regret this is you dont take subclass into account" like most monks should deal normal damage in theory, but subclasses usually switch them out to elemental, force or radiant. So the recommendation is more about "if you dont have a subclass" more than "This is the one you need"
Boon of Exquisite Radiance for example is not recommendet for paladins, despite you potentially being able to max out a crit smites damages once a day for fun effects (Eternal rest is situational, if you fight a lot of necromancers, or absolutly dont want that dragon to return as a dracolich or whatever)
So pick whatever boon you want, not necessarily whatever is recommended. The recommended boon is mostly for "generic high level PC" more than your personal character I feel
Okay I got the maths wrong, it's only once per turn. Not once per attack lol
like wizards get recommended boon of spell recall. While its not a bad boon, at level 19 most wizards dont really care about a 25% chance to not spend a low level spellslot? They got 13 of of those 4 and lower slots, but they only really need their high level slots in a proper fight. Granted, more baseline fireballs, but only with a 25% chance to even do anything you realistically can hope to recover about 3 spells if you use all your low level spell slots
now, half casters like paladins and rangers, that only get up to 5th level spellslots, and use their low level spellslots all the time? THEY most definetly want chances to smite more and get WAY better value out of that one
Yeah, I thought that was a little silly too
so while wizards would rarely ever even roll on that boon, half casters/multiclassed casters get ot roll on it all the time
(also wizards ALREADY regain 10 spell levels on a short rest. Thats already all their level 1 and 2 spells if they please. What are they supposed to spend all those spells on, mage armor the entire group to walk naked into the dragon fight?)
Or third casters, since they only have 1-4.
yep. Its not a bad boon (albeit a little gamble-y for my taste to work) but it can work, just not on a wizard imo
Agreed
well, not a single class wizard
But for both third casters. There are better options too
oh yes, a boon that extends your spell prowress by giving oyu more 1-4 slots maybe is situational. There are options for things that always give you good stuff.
Am I the only one that wishes the Mercy Monk had more healing capabilities? It has... Alright healing potential per round and baked in lesser restoration... But not a whole lot else.
I would give Hand of Harm up for more versatility and a better level 17 ability...
Healing is largey a magical effect so being able to heal at all as a martial class is already unusual and the lesser restoration effect can frequently be more valuable than hp healing depending on circumstances
At level 17, the Mercy Monk's level 17 ability is damn weak.
you...can bring back the dead .-.
Martials don’t get the ability to resurrect, so having the option is pretty neat
i mean it just never comes up
So can half the other classes in the game. But at much earlier levels. It will never be useful
they shouldve made it a twoparter where you have hand of ultimate mercy and another feature for the hand of harm
Mercy Monk does it without any costly material component, needing it prepared to start, and without being a spellcaster with spell slot restrictions
I don’t particularly think mercy monk needs a buff either
Even from a narrative standpoint thats a powerful option
ok bu5t its level 17 thats not thaaat impressive
How much does revivify cost again?
Raising the dead is pretty solid tbh
The idea of trading a feature for an alternative is interesting. One to take up with the DM well in advance, I feel, and lay the narrative groundwork.
300
300gp
Revivify is 1 minute not 24 hours
At level 17 300 gold is nothing.
And also only brings back to 1
Again, Revivity has a super tight window. As in, if you werent there right as they died, you can't use it
I do think the feature could be better, but I don’t think it’s too weak
Yeah its definitely a better revivify
Even Resurrection is only 1000 GP, if you are level 17 without 1000GP something went wrong.
Player pops up halfway through level 16 asking to change their 17 feature to something that they haven't prepared in their own story, the answer's quite likely to be no and then we're all sad.
No material cost, has a better length of time, and 4d10+wis mod healing
Resurrection without it prepared? anything level 17+ is almost always time sensitive
It's kind of required to prevent casters from prep timing a situation
Finding someone dead that you need back up now can easily be an issue
Plus, this is on a class that wouldn’t get access to any healing, let alone resurrection
Revivify existing is why players will almost never have the other revival spells prepared. Or the specific value diamonds on hand. Mercy Monk bypasses that problem
That is fair I guess
I do like Mercy monks for what they are supposed to be. They are basically trying to balance life and death, transfering energy (taking symbolized by necrotic damage) from one person to another. They arent actual healers though, but in a combat using one hit from your flurry of blows to get the fighter/rogue/paladin next to you back up is amazing anyways, basically half a bonus action for a healing word
Focus points are also short rest. That monk can ressurect a dozen people in a single day if it became necessary for teh story
the resurrection is only once a long rest
Ah missed that line. still. The 1 cost free revival is pretty strong and a DM should narratively enable it more often
the resurrection thing is just a bonus/the logical conclusion of "transfering life into dead things" without being a necromancer
also also, as most high level campaigns tend to be a bit out there (fighting god and whatnot) you might have all the gold, but not any diamonds where you are
what good is 200k gold if you cannot find a single diamond particle in planeshift distance because you are locked in a demiplane of torment
Theres still added buffs for it being a once per long rest that make it worth
lol end up with the party each donating some of their carbon and pressing it together super hard for eons in the plane of torment to make a diamond
By that point you've passed the ressurection time frame
that's a great point, but at least you have a diamond now
that too, revivify doesnt remove conditions, this does and does not have the casting time of 1 hour from raise dead/resurrection
Also increased healing so thy dont instadown
also also also it does work if your party member/friend got turned into vampire spawn or whatever. It doesnt have the pesky "doesnt work if the creature was undead at any point"
bonus points if you accidentally make a deaf/blind person come back with those senses intact even though that wasnt something they had while alive previously
the undead rule though. I remember once the dm pulling out a finger of death on an important npc, instakilling them, and because of turning them into a zombie for free that meant the guy was just permanently deleted from the campaign (it ran until level 8)
thats just nasty
i like the idea of Permanent death being added to a campaign, for either players or BBEG
Game ends on BBEG death most of the time anyways
But there is the thing, the BBEG isnt stupid, he would have a backup plan, his left hand that was hiding casting REVIVIFY on him after he is killed
that, or there is a bigger badder eviler guy working from the shadows
If it's the final BBEG, someone would definitely have counterspell
Not every BBEG is Acererak or Halaster they don’t always come back and they aren’t always wizards
That's more a premise for another campaign
or in some moment of hte story, him letting himself get killed. So the party relax and fix the remaining from his invasion so he can be revived in secret and do a show up back in some moment in the future.
true, that is why i said LEFT HAND, a servant, ally of him, etc.
RER2 spoilers, if you think about it hard enough
Would add another layer of genius to it
eh? what?
Resident Evil: Revelations 2
Oh....yeah, didnt remembered it. The idea is mostly going for the classic bit of "i wasnt dead, yet "
Greetings fellow wizards and beings of this land
I finish my character now I shall wait to achieve my friends into this
Wait I recognise that character…
A quote from her is "My escape is death, but not this one"
And it also shares the premise of the antagonist being obsessed with an IRL novel because of how much it reminds them of themselves
Yeah, but isnt DnD related so, lets left it there
Great game series, though. Wish it got more attention
Greetings
It’s a good manga THATS all im saying
Doing very well today
that sound nice, but yeah. If a party got the access to such spell, i would expect hte BBEG too.
Making him giga hard to kill, forcing the party to find a way to kill him permanently
Js not happy school gonna open up soon✌️
There is some leeway given to us, but yeah, mostly about DnD
I finish all my chores and now I can sit back relax and play video games
hello!
Oh nah washing dishes and stuff like that
I just downloaded hogwarts legacy so now i can have more expirience as a wizard in dnd 😄
Greetings will the wise from stranger things
It’s easy as it can be
Hey fine folks! We do have #non-dnd-topics channel for everything not-D&D related.
Oh right
We do ask folks to try and stay relatively on topic for the channel they're posting in per server rules.
I'd assume yeah, given there are about 270K members
Like a dnd YouTuber ?
I mean, wouldn't anyone who made a character qualify for that?
There's a few folks - we see pretty good use of our #dnd-advertisements channel of folks sharing the D&D tools, services, and products they've created.
I think they mean like, posting videos about it, etc.
Probably means more someone on the line of a Creator who creates supplements content. Things like that, not just characters
or that
Was half joking about it. Creator is such a loose thing
artists would be in #dnd-arts-and-crafts as well
Speaking of D&D artists, this past week I got to have lunch with Larry Elmore. It is always a pleasure to hang out with him
Actively working on a portfolio website right now, but you can search my username in this server and I've posted quite a bit of art
We do have #dnd-arts-and-crafts for sharing of your D&D arts and crafts - and we do have a lot of telented folks in our community
(but also keep any soliciting to #dnd-advertisements or private messages - thanks!)
Oh and a final word of caution: with a community of our size we also have a fair amount of scammers so please be careful and do your due diligence.
Out of respect for the rules of the space if you want to talk more. Send me a DM.
Are you converting them to the new 2024 rule set or just 5th edition in general?
Blessed Be. Crunch was never anything that I could get a good grasp on. My big project that I'm working on is 100% pure fluff
Crunch is anything to do with math or converting or things like that
A fluff is things that have no mechanical benefit
That usually means things like lore and stuff like that
hi can anyone guide me about d&d? i wanna play it for the first time and idk what to buy now
tyy
D&D can be gotten into completely for free. The Basic Rules can be found in both #learn-to-play and the pins of #dnd-newcomers .
The server doesn’t host games directly, but it does have an LFG function both for paid and free games. The general instructions are in #find-a-game , otherwise you can go directly to #paid-looking-for-game (if you want to pay for a game) or #looking-for-players
Just keep in mind soliciting/advertising games outside the proper channels is unfortunately against server rules
hey is this the place i can talk whit someone about a dnd campgain idea
Are you a DM? You might enjoy posting it in #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building then!
yeah or you can use #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building
oh thx
Well, looks like I just Echo'ed your words
Looks like your name fits /j
Hey there. Just wondering about some general etiquette. If I make a dnd character that dies, can I use the same character again from lvl 1 in a different game and/or world?
in a different campaign? yeah
hell you can slap a different name on it and use it as your next character in the same campaign, add in a little backstory saying they were a relative of the character you had that died and boom there you go
Alright cool 😂
Usually people make 1 character per campaign (not counting future characters they make for the same campaign), but nothing prevents you from reusing the character/concept in a different game
While it is usually fine as long as the character uses the options the DM allows. Many DMs I know like Bespoke characters for their campaigns.
Just don’t expect the character to carry anything over
Alright thx everyone 👍
Can somebody teach me how to play?
You can probably start by searching up the base rules, you can find them on D&D Beyond
/new
First you can go to #learn-to-play and read all about it
darn I thought that was it
then you can go to #dnd-newcomers and if you have any questions feel free to ask
Bladesinger:You expect me to fight the dragon in melee
Arcane Archer;Well yeah you have swords don’t you
Bladesinger:So do you, and yet we both have range options, so we could just blast it from afar
that dragon is going to get on someones face, its better if the party picks and not the dragon
Sorry just saw this. All game soliciting/organizing needs to take place in the Looking For Game channels or via private messages. See #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels.
I'd love to see him if you don't mind
is there a way i can use items to make a posiones cloud ? like cloud kil ??
Hey peeps, I have a Warlock of the Fathomless in my game and I wanted to give her a cool eldritch-y water-y based familiar. She wants an eel, but I don't think we have those, so I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion of a cool familiar I can give her? I'm ok if it's homebrew, or third party too. I posted it here just so I wouldn't cross-post channels.
Are you asking for like, established in game familiars or just cool aquatic animals? Because Bobbit Worms are about as Eldritch as the sea can get
But to my knowledge no one's made a stat block for Bobbit Worms lol
like, aquatic familiar?
mmm....
Frogs are cute
completely fishy i could say of giving her a jellyfish
And she can use the jellyfish like a hat
I'm cool with whatever, really. Her patron is a sea leviathan demigod, so I just wanted something thematic and I realized Eels are not in the MM 😛
Perhaps an aberration would be cool like a Slaad Tadpole or something similar. I'm okay with something as powerful as a Sphynx of Wonder
Baby aboleth?
Yeah true, but I am saying probably better for the barbarian to go than the range characters
That would definitely be interesting, but I don't believe there's a statblock for that is there?
yep, but are cute
I THINK there's one for a young aboleth?
i used the slaad tadpol stat block for aboleth hatchlings before
I think I'll do something similar then! Thanks guys ^^
Can someone please explain how to play the game I’m very confused but curious at the same time
Check out #learn-to-play and #dnd-newcomers!
Ok thx
If an aoe effect says that you take poisoning if you end your turn in it, but you have a feature that removes poison at the end of your turn?
Does the poison happen or not?
First, Poison happens.
Next, Poison removal happens.
You can't Poison Removal if you never get Poisoned. And even if the result is what is was before, everything needed to happen.
is bleach a thing in dnd and how mutch would it cost ?? if not wat would be a good basic ingreedient to make it using the alchemist supplies ?
What would you need it for?
im homebrewen a way to make alternative to stinking cloud and cloud kil in alchemist fire format. throw away forget weapon with effects
figiring out if i need to collect ingrideints
or just x amount of gold over x amount of time
crafting alchemist fire takes 8 hours and 25 gold
If you're good with chemistry... it exists.
but does the player need to get raw materials? or only gold?
In a world where magic exists, cleaning products arent as needed besides basic soap.
Just go to your local magical laundromat of Prestidigitation casters
like when crafting alchemist fire all it says " 25 gp worth of raw materials (half the final item's value)."
crafting costs are expressed in gold but that is the price of the materials
Ah, so the mustard gas Geneva convention breaking build. Got it
so a player cannot just craft things unless they have appropriate materails that the dm controlls access to
yes
You could probably use an Alchemist's Supplies, for the process.
Bleach is: NaClO (Sodium Hypochlorite)
wat would be best way to roleplay to create bleach? wat is it made from ?
so the dmg says that the DMG is not ment to simulate reality, so as a player you cant invent new things and try to force your dm to make them work
Sodium Hypochlorite.
All it is is Salt (NaCl) with an Oxygen (O). But it's really the chemical processing to make it
so when making alchemist fire does the player also need to buy the raw materials? and is this up to do dm to say what that would be?
yes
and for the dm to determine IF they are avalable
ok
You should first ask your dm if you are playing with materials, maybe you'll be lucky and he'll say no 😉
Then yeah my friend, start collecting
probaly need to water down the spell effect of cloud kill
btw would this consider a magic item??
cloud kil in a bottle ala mustard gas
Does the river styx exist in Forgotten Realms?
It would probably be a nonmagical item. Like Inhaled Poisons
I am in a one shot with a druid whose int is 18 and wis is 13 and dex is 6 (we rolled stats) and he is playing without arms (so no somatic components of spells for him)
How do I not stab him myself
also 18 HP at level 3
Because he can Wild Shape.
in 5.5e he doesn't get new HP
It exists in the Lower planes and not the Material plane. So no.
if he could wild shape I would not have been that mad but bro's 18 HP is ALL HE HAS
Wdym it exists in the lower planes?
Subclass?
The River Styx flows through the Lower Planes
Moon circle
Like we got the Upper Planes, Lower Planes, and Middle planes on the Planescape map.
Upper Planes is basically where Good aligned creatures are/go and Lower Planes is the reverse.
Its a one shot, probably not a huge cause to stress yourself out about it...
Rolled stats give and take.. apparently they didnt invest a huge number in Con but that is their choice. They and the dm approved the concept right?
So let them have fun with it and play your character to the best of your ability so you have fun with it
The Lower Planes have the River Styx and the Upper Planes have their own river I am forgetting the name of
It's a dungeon crawl
He will die in 2 hits and I am not even gonna heal him
Ah okay. I ask because I made a reference to the river styx as a joke and someone in my party was like "You know what the River Styx is?" I'm in a home brew campaign where everyone was teleported from their own world and I picked FR for mine. So it's not an inconsistency then to know about it?
He didn't even roll bad stats,
i cant stand it when folks take their PC's and make it so they are missing huge imporant abilities like this
i dont allow it in my games personally
Bro we are in a dungeon crawl, I am the cleric and it's a 1st time DM - he will die to a goblin
so hopefully he learns from that
Well the good thing is he will die like 20 minutes in and be able to make a new char
It’s just a general Multiverse thing.
Plus the Greek, Norse, and Egyptian gods are canon to Faerun
I like disjointed ability scores distributions. It's rolled stats. Don't be a duck. It's a team game
Moon Druid, he can work with that
i mean, the river stix is not in the forgotten realms, its in the hells, but depending on your caricters level of knowledge of such things they could know about it
The River Styx is basically the way creatures travel between All the lower planes without Plane shift
Notably it’s not just the hells. It’s all Lower Planes
It’s how Yugoloths and Demons keep showing up in the Blood War
So it wouldn't be common knowledge?
I'm a paladin with a flavor religon background so ig I could know about it if it isn't
Is your character studied in the Fiends and their planes?
Aka Proficient in Religion
I have a +0 in religion
I have spells that deal with fiends and stuff so ig in universe I have to be a little studied as a paladin no?
nope, anyone can make an oath regardless of understanding of such things, feinds and undead can still just smell wrong
Having a weapon does really give you knowledge on other creatures
Like I can be given a bear trap to use but I’m not gonna know about bears.
Hmm, I goofed then
Could just say “it’s a common expletive at my church”
That works yeah!
Could be a character detail
can anyome help me find a game?
“I use new words I heard without learning their meaning” or something to that effect
Read through #find-a-game carefully
thank u
That would definitely fit my character. The way I used it does imply I know what it is though. There was a dead NPC and I joked he should be given a coin for his boat fare.
Easy “that’s what my teachers said when someone died”
Also informative of the type of people he knows
you get temp hp equal to druid level IIRC
we are level 3
He gets thrice Druid level in THP iirc
What does IIRC mean
it's equal to druid level
yeah, 3x for moon druid
Moon Druid gets triple their level in temp hp
so they'd get 9, which is half again their existing HP total
"If I recall correctly"
ooo
so
9 temp hp
times 2
18 temp hp
so like
36 effective hp
no, 3*3 is 9
so 18 + 9
27
they have 2 wild shapes
doesn't stack
IIRC
doesn't need to for effective HP
ye ,they'll have two charges
also healing word is purely verbal
and they can cure wounds in wildshape as a 2024 moon druid
With animal hands! 🐾
Yea that too
I have like base HP 36
- I can use twilight sanctuary for 1d8 + 4 temp hp + sanctuary + shield of faith + plate armor and shield give me 20 AC
so I will be the party's main tank
any animal?
Their healing word and 36 effective HP almost makes me not want to stab them anymore
Umm... maybe? There's a section somewhere, lemme find it
at level 3, any beast of CR1 or lower
and no fly speed
Moon Druid's AC is boosted too since '14 to '24
his AC is less than 10 IIRC
13+wis if higher than the stat block you're using
His DEX/WIS Mod is -4?
dex doesn't work in animal form
Your game statistics are replaced by the Beast's stat block, but you retain your creature type; Hit Points; Hit Point Dice; Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma score...
I gtg for dinner cya'all
Iirc, you can use one Base Armor Calculation when you have multiple Base Armor Calculations
There is some iffy math going on I feel
so you choose either the stat block's AC or the modified 13+WIS mod ac, whichever is higher
13 wis puts them at 14ac with the moon druid calc
The only thing I find odd about the stats the druid chose were that they boosted their int to 18 not their wis. So their wild shape ac is drastically nerfed.
Low HP can be rough but they wouldn't be the first player ever to dump con
Oops sorry, meant to turn reply off
I mean, I dump con on druid
you're fine, I prefer ping
That’s something you can do lol
how many people can u play dnd with? can u play it with just 2
Sure
I mean, it caused a like 40+ minute long arguement when I mentioned it yesterday
I did treat con as a tertiary stat on my genie paladin, but that’s more so because I wanted to build around unarmored defense
And I plan to take the tough feat to mitigate it
Actually, they're both active. You just chose one to be applied at any given time
my poor plasmoid is stuck in uncomfortable armor until she can find a barrier tattoo (medium)
Who needs those when you can have like 16 ac with nothing but some fancy silk robes on
I have midling dex XD
Perks of playing a very unusual multiclass I suppose
and barrier tattoo gives me like 16~17ac which is okayish for a mid/back liner
Basically, I built my genie paladin to have 20 dex/20 cha by level 20
see, my girl is silly because she needs str, dex, wis, and cha
Is it good? Probably not, but it’s very funny to imagine some guy in silk robes praying up to a tarrasque and beating it up
I did plan to play a variant human for the tough feat, just to play it safe
I have tough off of Eldritch Infusions
Lessons of the First Ones is incredibly nice
issue was to get pact of the blade to have parity with even just moderate investment into EB I have to jump through a ton of hoops >.>
good feats for sorcerer 5.5e wild magic
i have elven accuracy rn and want to increase my con by 1
for con
Warcaster?
can't resiliant because you already have con prof
hmm
Chef
the issue is im 20 in charisma
Speedy or Rebuke maybe
And?
do i just take feats for feats?
Don’t see the issue
You can always pump wisdom or int with warcaster tbf
nvm, rebuke is terrible
i can
You could do an ASI. Boring but effective
You certainly can, dunno how good that’d be but warcaster is insanely good for maintaining concentration
ye, speedy, chef, or durable
@blissful ibex I’ve talked myself into making a blood hunter, now I need a gothic horror campaign for it
STR 10
DEX 14
CON 17
INT 12
WIS 13
CHA 20
CoS time?
this is my stats
I’m in two different CoS campaigns currently lol
Take warcaster, push wis to 14
Wis and Con are usually very important saves
that's so much con q_q
I wonder what 20 int would translate too irl
The extra point in con is not gonna do more than advantage on con saves for spells
yeah, would just hard ASI +1 wis +1 con at this point
at 12?
or warcaster wis
im planning ahead
As high as you can ideally at all levels
I guess it depends, are you going to level 16 and getting another feat?
Especially at higher levels when Wis saves get so much more meaner
im asking for my next feat
A lot of “you do not get a turn” stuff
do i take metamagic adept xd
Yeah that’s what this about
Are you not reading the chat messages?
ohh
i didnt see that mb
I’d take warcaster either way and call it a day, con saves are important but the main one you’ll make is for concentration spells, so an extra con stat doesn’t seem nearly as worth
ASI(WIS/CON) or War Caster (WIS)
And you have proficiency in con saves, all an extra con does is bump your hp a bit
i just want to raise it by one tbh
War Caster gets you advantage on concentration and also bumps wis which is more important at this point
While it feels bad to have an uneven stat, warcaster is insanely good and worth considering over an asi
k
And you’ve got con in the ideal range (16-17)
also lets you do oppurtunity attacks with your spells/cantrips that arte single target
or heal/buff someone as they move by
war caster at lvl 8
At level 12 you could take a feat that pumps con
next level 12 and 16
Is dexterity fighter as good as strength fighter?
Dexterity is probably better than strength fighter
Rapier is a very nice weapon, and longbow is good as well
In the early levels it’s fine, but optimally PAM and GWM do outdo it for damage in pretty sure
More flexible overall build wise in terms of subclasses
But like, it’s small bumps and you can do fun things with it
In versatility better
In damage and tankiness not so much
or Sun Blade if you want to get fancy with it
requires attunement though
But yeh, we’re starting back up on Saturday with one of our CoS playthroughs
Currently playing a hexblade warlock who uses a longbow in that one
need more longbow casters
Ranger and 2024 Eldritch Knight moment
And maybe Swords Bard? Does Valor get bows?
I'm too busy playing silly 3/4 caster multiclasses to access longbow on my druid
valor does, also warden druid
Right? Basically I’m playing as a sneaky warlock who’s contracted to the Raven Queen, it’s pretty fun
what about gift of gem dragon btw
It’s fun because my appearance is very odd compared to everyone else in Barovia, but then I just melt into the background
Hello other dnd fellows
I'm considering GOOlock with One With Shadows
but I also really enjoy Master of Myriad Forms
A str save is usually not great, since a lot of creatures have good str
I’m thinking of taking shadow touched so I can cast invisibility for free, my invocations are a bit tied up in hexblade ones sadly
The only sucky thing about playing a martial warlock is you don’t get much choice on your invocations
I got 3 taken up by pact of the blade, 1 for LOtFO: Tough, and then one for either LOtFO skilled, One With Shadows, or Master of Myriad Forms
dumb that EB only needs like 2 invocations to work and pact of the blade needs 4 + additional feats
Honestly, it’s more flavor than anything at this point for me, I know there are better feats but I want to have a bit of fun with it
This might sound controversial, but I think the extra attack effect should just be tied to hexblades rather than be an invocation
it should be tied to character level and inherant in PotB or improved pact weapon c:
Pact of the blade warlocks can still use true strike
I think BG3 did that, which would also make sense yes. I liked how they did improved versions of the pacts at level 5
Party Idea: Bladesinger wizard, Swords or Valor bard, Eldritch Knight fighter, Arcane Trickster rogue and Hexblade warlock. They keep getting confused for each other
Ill talk to my dm about it, but superior pact weapon doesn’t include the text about ranged weapons, but he’ll probably be fine if I swap them and still continue to use bows
like if EB number of instances scales natively wholly irrespective of class levels, PotB attacks should as well
and then add weapon mastery to inproved pact weapon and then call it a day
If EB is basically fully built with Agonizing Blast and Eldritch Spear; Pact of the Blade should have the same treatment and only need Pact of the Blade and Improved Pact Weapon for most of its functionality
Don’t forget wild magic barbarian
Anybody played geoguessr with dnd statblocks
I did think about taking sharpshooter (2014) but it doesn’t function super well if I can’t get advantage
That’s a thing?
No, but it's a fun idea
I agree!
speaking of bows and warlocks, i've had this character concept floating in my head of a gloom stalker / warlock who casts darkness and just murks people in it. yay or nay?
yay
Dilly dilly. There’s an NPC in my campaign who is a Drow Gloom stalker / Rogue. He uh… he wrecks.
I can def see a Gloomlock being a sick PC
Found it!
Monsters Casting Spells
It’s important that players can tell when their characters’ opponents are casting spells, giving the characters the opportunity to cast Counterspell or otherwise interfere with the spellcasting.
When a monster casts a spell, check the components it’s using and describe its activity appropriately. If the spell has Verbal components, the monster might chant, boldly proclaim, or hiss the mystic syllables of the spell. Somatic components involve the monster moving its hands (or similar appendages) in graceful patterns, shaping them into angular positions, or thrusting them sharply forward. Finally, the monster might be holding a Spellcasting Focus or some other Material component.
whenever i call attention to the enemy wizards wand they all instantly say GONNA GET THAT WAND
and then they sometimes do and its really fun
That's why I grabbed a level of fighter (first level). I use a Shortbow and I get vex. With sharpshooter, as long as I hit at least once, I can keep getting adv on that creature.
What I need to start doing is actually just using my first attack without sharpshooter instead of being dum dum and risking it for the biscuit. So I can at least get my initial adv. But I'm stubborn.
Should work fine, your stats will be slightly wonky but that sounds like a hilarious combination
Although a melee weapon would work a little better, you can just take sharpshooter to be able to shoot at point blank range lol
It's a wand of tax evasion
Thats an Artifact tier magic item
Only if you get away with it
Crud, now I wanna make a gunslinger character
Otherwise it's a common item
See, you just go warlock 2 valor bard 6, grab Agonizing Blast, Eldritch Spear, and Pact of the Blade for your Infusions, and then just EB and attack in the same action every turn c:
thanks I hate it
Orrrr, I just play a blood hunter with a rifle and infuse it radiant damage as WOTC intended
just hate how easy EB is to set up vs pact of the blade
on top of them burning some of the more martial Eldritch Invocations off the UB apparently
yeah, havent put thoughts to paper about it, more of a thematic concept really. But stat wise i was thinking maybe prioritizing dexterity and charisma
And on top of that, pact of the blade is never gonna keep up dmg wise unless you build into the og GWM and play a round that
eeh, current GWM works with it
Hi guys
just utterly kills your stat spread
I mean, I’d just put dex at 14 and wear medium armor
Og is better since you can darkness for advantage and mitigate the -5 if we’re talking optimally
But they should just Make Thirsting/Devouring blade a standard part of the base Pact of the Blade
and add Weapon Mastery to Improved Pact Weapon
quick question, is it possible for a Lich's phylactery to be a corpse that is not his own? for example, the corpse of his daughter before he became a lich.
Yes, but WOTC hates it when we do fun things
very true lmao thanks!
they are usually small, wellmade objects. Easier to hide or relocate
Oh sorry, this was in reference to warlocks having to go through extra hoops to be a martial class
Technically it can be a lot of things, so you could for sure flavor this somehow
Okay so it'd be like:
- Allow standard Pact of the Blade to manifest ranged weapons
- Improved Pact Weapon now requires 2~5 levels of Warlock to take as an Eldritch Invocation
- Thirsting/Devouring Blade and Weapon Mastery are added to Improved Pact Weapon in addition to the existing +1/+1 bonus
- Then throw in a few Lifedrinker/Repelling Blast/Grasp of Hadar-esque Invocations as options to round it out. (Possibly having them require either Chain or Blade and having them work with either your Chain Minion's attacks or your attacks, allowsing you to take them twice to apply to both similar to how the generic warlock cantrip options work)
- Maybe an add-on Eldritch Invocation that allows you to manifest a second weapon or a shield as part of the BA and gives shields proficiency
- Bring back the Heavy Armor Invocation
It is an imagination game, you can make it work that way if you want it to even if it isnt standard
Hello
just making sure I got this right. Scimitars are light so they can be monk weapons correct
Cool, fun magic swords for my monk are possible yaaay
How is everyone on this fine Friday morning
decent
be better if I had a game to play in XD, but my campaign isn't until sunday and the AL server I play on is still slow for end of the year stuff
Why are some of the durations in this game so extremely long? Like, "To make a permanent teleportation circle, you have to use this spell in the same location everyday for 365 days". When will I use this knowledge? Why isnt it like, a week or something, or just very expensive?
Tired, exhausted, and bored out of my mind
Overheated
To do stuff like establish a Teleportation network
to make it possible in game for players, but out of reach unless committed
The spells in the PHB are ALSO DM Tools so while you as a player might not use it too much, its good information for a DM
like that example specifically is something most major cities and insitutions would hire a mage to set up for them and provide matierals for
I’m sorry to hear that. I hope it gets better
I feel like staying in the same place for 1 year without pause is still pretty out of reach
What do you mean?
Mostly from wrestling and having to deal with my siblings
Its hot here, and I was outside for a long time
Okay. So you mean it literally lmao
I mean...A lot of people do that IRL when they dont go on vacation, and it doesnt have to be you who does it each time.
Like if a player really wants to do it without using a bastian they can pay an NPC to do it
But again that part is mostly a DM tool, and to keep it out of reach of players unless they are really dedicated to it
Only costs like 748,250 gp to hire someone to cast a 5th level spell every day for a year with a 50gp material cost every time RAW
Thats true. Ill keep that in mind, if there is ever a Homebase in consideration
Easy money
can you waste a spell slot with a bonus action outside combat?
if you mean cast, yes
you generally still have actions/bonus actions, etc outside of combat on an ongoing basis, you just ignore them most of the time because you don't need to be that specific with timings
Bastions are a good tool for this, theres even a teleport circle facilities if your players want it
every 6 seconds you get your action, bonus action, object interaction, and movement
yeah my friend wants to cast divine sense to locate some human(?) cultists but i don't think it would work it only works on celestials fiends and undead
Bastions as in fortresses? Or is it a specific term I dont know
Ruleset for a player controlled base possibly with NPCs, crafting services, and the like
Ah, and bastion is the word for that. Alright, thanks
How common are they, and when would they best be implemented Lvlwise?
IIRC somewhere in tier 2
@blissful ibex @jolly goblet i just don't know if it's a good decision for my friend to cast
You're likely to pick up celestial or fiend familiars potentially, at the very least
so if the cultists have any of those, they'd be pinged
IMO it’s a design choice to make it sound REALLY impressive.
As a DM, I can then introduce an “aha!” moment for players where you CAN shorten it - and then we go into the next adventure.
Multiple people in a party can have one, and they start as low as 5th level
locate object or locate creature or some other divination spell would likely work better in this instance
hmm.. we're level 2..
not much you can do then, either ask around about suspicious folk or see if you can track them via some mundane method
we're probably going to infiltrate them posing as new followers
seems like the best option, "keep your friends close, enemies closer" etc etc
see if you can get eyes on some of their initiates and get disguised made before hand if you can
pose as the sort of folks they generally target
i told the group we might need to buy disguises, but i'm okay because i have a hooded cloak that's cult-adjacent
Let me know if you're still looking for someone ?
would you mind if I share my portfolio over dm ?
Do you have the DMG? Or have acess to one? Because all these rules are in the 2024 DMG
Hi!
I have. It just basically said "If you want, do it before Lvl 10", so I wanted to know when others had theirs usually
I started giving out access to Sidekicks from Tasha's around level 3. For when not all the party can make it. A bastion, depends on the game but I typically give those out at level 5 with hirelings starting shortly there after.
@blissful ibex well, if you find another campaign to play in, I’m down to join
"If you allow Bastions in your campaign, characters acquire their Bastions when they reach level 5" directly from the dmg
Could a Tiefling use their horns to make Unarmed Strikes?
Cause I have an idea for a Monk that headbutts people instead of punches and I think it’s pretty cool
Oh damn. Then I read the wrong part. Well, thank you
Flavor is free
can explain how you make the attack however you want so long as it is following the standard mechanics for unarmed attacks
Magic Missile, but its a reverse dropkick
Yes, you can use any part of your body to make unarmed strikes. It will still be a regular unarmed strike, mechanically.
Monks can already can do that without the horns
Good luck on the concussions though....
Wait. Does that mean you can flurry headbutts?
Of course.
Yes
Thats amazing
though like you'd probably get whiplash lol
Yes. I once described my monk killing a boss that way. As headbutting the man against a wall until his skull was smashed and my character's face was covered in his brain matter
Gruesome
Con save DC 16 or fall unconscious for double damage
mortal combat indeed
My character was pretty angry. He had downed the rogue. Nobody kills the rogue but me.
Why did you drown the rogue
No, the boss had downed the rogue.
Meaning put the rogue at 0 hp. And the warlock's imp familiar.
My character hated both the rogue and the imp, therefore got furious that someone else got close to killing them
Siiiick
Peeks
why am i doing two 8's one 10 and three 15's for every single character now
Like you’re rolling that? Or you’re doing point but for it
that's point buy
Do a 14 in one of those 3, then set another stat to 10
good point are people still rolling or point buy because you can roll much better then a point buy offers, i think the best output you can get with point buy is 5 13's and one 10 thats 76 points total
But that’s just the cleanest way to make a character mechanically work for their specific role
Sometimes you find a groove. My usual PB is a 15, 2 14's, 2 10's, and an 8.
Like if you’re doing random rolls but just doing it to get crazy good rolls, it kind of defeats the purpose of having your particular role and what you want to build around
if you want to multiclass a few classes it looks closer to 13 13 13 13 10 13 or some varation there of
Sheesh. That's a lot of multiclassing
The question is why lol, rp wise you can def do it but it feels like it gets to be too much
Im doing my first campaign and im the dm what do i need to do to run it smooth
Run a session 0 to set boundaries, expectations, and rules
Communicate with your players as much as possible
i donno i was thinking pally bard rogue artificer. lol
Whats a sessuon 0
Also, realize it will NOT fully run smooth, but seek feedback and try to avoid repeating mistakes (make new ones, though!).
I’m not against multi classing, but on the whole it’s going to be worse usually than just sticking to one class (unless the multiclass fits with your primary stats already)
My players are my friends that havent played b4 so we ok if i make mistakss
Session 0 is the session before the actual games, and sometimes, when introducing new players
Like an hour or so session before any actual questing to make sure everyone meshes together and people are happy with their builds
Then just think of it as a hangout where you talk about character builds and make sure everyone is gonna communicate what they want
Anything Brennan Lee mulligan runs is gonna be very helpful
Critical role is a good watch for their campaigns, I don’t remember if they have a session zero though
Thanks man
i donno the point buy system seems to force people into looking for stat granting magic items, it seems silly to me, point buy tops out at 75 and that does not even hit the 50% mark for rolls i think 79 points is the 50% mark. To get the most out of your point buy 13 13 13 13 10 13 is max output
I wouldn’t say that at all. ASI levels grant most of what you need
The perfect jack of all trades, master of none but oftentimes better than the master of one
I'm gonna make a level 6 warlock who made 6 different demon deals
also, with background, this brings you to
13,13,13,13,13,13; it's also the same stat values for standard array
I’d say all 13s is a waste simply because you’re not specializing in anything
I did that with egraz just because I rolled 4 13s
I'd say rolling is terribly imbalanced vs the other two major options and is incredibly spiky with its values; potentially causing incredibly one sided parties
well if 50% of the time you roll higher then 79 obviously rolling is better since most of the time you will throw away rolls under 79, and in the end if you roll under 79 you just say to your gm, ahh i will switch to point buy.
when buying parchment do you need a container for it?
'14 Base Human and the 13's bumped up to 14's
Possibly a Map Case
must have??
Not really. Like you could carry an arrow in your hands. Or 20 in a quiver
Cases can hold 5 parchments
My fault. Edited it to 5. Mistook it for 10 for paper
Id still say such a spread wouldn’t be an ideal scenario. All 14’s isn’t a terrible spread but it’s not amazing either
Parchment used to make spell scrols for right? i usealy just ask for blank spell scrolls and pay 1gp per scroll
I’d much rather a party of folks who specialize and have their roles, that way people can have their moments to shine
You aren't building a superhero at 1st level, unless you are the lucky few who choose the 4d6 rolls and manages to roll a 17 or 18 or even rarer two 17's or 18's. You start out already as above average in any stat 12 and higher. Once you pick your background you increase those even more, and one can be as high as 17 which is exceptional for any mortal. You can eventually become superhuman, but not at 1st. And nor should you be.
Who’s excited for new years events to be over so we can get back to the important things… like DnD
Sorcerers prepare spells once per level, instead of once per long rest.
That is correct yes, that’s why you’ve gotta plan out what spells you intend to take
ist that very painful?
for you
You can change them after a long rest though
Only if you're skill issued and take the wrong ones.
Can I join someone campaign
I need help with some forgotten realm stuff
My char is basically divine soul sorcerer + aasimar + a bunch of other unearned privileges
and basically the lore is - Tymora and Helm (or another diety who is not beshaba) made a bet involving my PC but I can't come up with the bet - they are wagering souls (if thatis appropriate).
we have a westmarch
What’s that
we have a hulk
What about a Goldshire?
Help me with this
Its not very clear about it 🫤
i dun think we can recruit / find games in here
what do you need help with
the bet / diety / wager
Anyone know where I can find a stat block for the Slayer from BG3
fellow valo player
Well where can I find a campaign on here
if you don't mind - can I DM you?
Helm: “This mortal will become a bulwark—one others rely on. Responsibility will define them.”
Tymora: “Or they’ll become a wildcard leader, winning loyalty through daring victories and impossible odds.”
Sure
I enjoy it, but I like planning out sorcerer builds ahead of time
yea I am thinking of some measurable metrics original plan was if my char dies of natural age or something else but it just doesn't fit
You cannot, sorcerers get their spells at level ups and live with them forever
well, you can swap one on level up if taking another sorcerer level, but otherwise yeah
Yes, just def not on long rests
that's more a wizard, druid, cleric, thing
My bad. For some reason I had Wizard on the mind
You’re good, I’ve had to live with my spell list being upfront ever since I played my first sorcerer
I got to change my spells on long rest as a sorcerer cuz of homebrew in my 1st campaign
Some people really do get it all
Doesn't that just result in sorcerer being a much better wizard but with a slightly worse spell list?
My DM allowed me to twin cast silvery barbs in 5e
yes
Honestly though, I did make one bad choice, but my dm agreed to let me swap it since I didn’t read the spell correctly
My DM let me feel like a rockstar as a martial past level 15
DM hated wizard overpowerness so he just buffed everyone else significantly
Wizards have a lot more utility, sorcerers generally can do more with their spells
as it should be, martials carry in every teir of play
“Cries in spellcasters dominating t4”
For me it's also about the aesthetics what class you play. I have a lot of fun with making martials
nah, every 25 plus cr monster has magic resistance and bonkers saves, and with proper adventuring days casters still have to be careful with slots
they only dominate if you run to few encounters
Remember folks Dungeons and Dragons is a war of attrition. By the time that your players get to the boss encounter, they should have at most 50% of their resources
Unfortunately it doesn’t matter if you’re playing as a party of say level 20 wizards and warlocks. They typically will have insanely high spell save dc’s and can blow through legendary resistance and things with ease
I never run out of sword swings
martial superiority has been identified
not really, properly challaing monsters will just make most saving throws
Me with 1 hp left: "I didn't hear no bell"
They really won’t I promise lol
The only hit point that matters is the last one
Another thing you can do in tier 4 which I do all the time is a specific magic monster, suffers no effects from spells below the fourth level.
its very commonly happining, i run several high level one shots a month and have brought 5 seperate full campaigns to level 20
That’s not to say martials are bad, it’s just that spellcasters are THAT much better
That'll get them to burn their high-level spell slots very quickly
Speak to the folks in optimization then, they commonly refer to spellcasters as the best in t4 play
i dont bother talking to white room calculators
That is fair. The game is not played in a spreadsheet
because a real game has so much more going on than they are able to ever account for
i ran 324 sessions of dnd 5e in 2025
Damn thats like 1 every day
When you put a monster versus a party with nothing else going on. Then yeah spell casting superiority shines.
But when you add in layer actions, environmental effects, special resistances for unique monsters, and running six to eight medium to hard encounters a day minimum, your casters are not going to be dominating the battlefield by the end of the day
just about, sometimes two a day, sometimes a day off
Truth. I play a straight T4 wizard and the sheer variety in spells and monster availability means I'm not always going to have the perfect solution, and often the martials can keep on trucking while I get blocked, resisted, or outright immune to what I thought I had prepared.
I respects the passion to the game
last session I got the most mileage out of casting Foresight on the fighter.
max level casters will absolutly chunk an encounter or two during an adventuring day with their top spells, thats why in teir four i run 10 to 12 per day
If you run Nova style. Meaning you only have one or two encounters a day or you run boss monsters that have nothing but their stat block and no backup. Yeah your wizard's going to ruin everyone's day. So just don't do that
I hate nova style
Especially when I play a class that benefits from short rests like warlock or monk
An example of Nova style. A paladin with a flame tongue sword at level 10 can nearly one shot a boss monster of an entire module if they start that fight with all their resources.
Wizards can also benefit a little from short rests
You shouldn't have six to eight medium encounters a day anyway, unless the activity is in Bosses dungeon or ruin lair. Where they are just sending wave after wave of minions.
arcane recovery is really good
I've played to much with players with nova style players who are like "I have only 3 spell slots left can we have a long rest" and I'm a warlock without any spellslots left
arcane recovery is once per day
But a lot of people want easy dnd
i do mostly all hard encounters via the 2024 exp budget
the new exp budget is so great
6 to 8 is a low day, 10 + is best
It's very fun to make encounters in 2024
That sounds like a drag to me, but to each their own
but encounters shouldn't just be "kill x"
6 to 8 medium encounters is a guideline presented at least in the 2014 dungeon Masters guide. If you're running just hard encounters, the number should be closer to four going up with each level tier
my games are action packed and the combat is how the players advance the narrative
yeah, i go harder than the 2014 daily budget
Sometimes an encounter can just be escape x
What's medium to you might not be medium to everyone
I like dungeon crawls where I get to solve puzzles and dodge traps more than having a bunch of fights just because we have to burn resources
im specificly talking about the exp budget calculations
not a vibes based assement of how hard an encounter is
An encounter difficultly is specifically a calculation based upon the CR of the monster and the party.
The new 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG) shifts focus to encounter pacing, balancing player resource use (including frequent short rests), and suggests 3-5 encounters
I mean I enjoy melee, but if you are giving me constant fights just so you don't have to give me any long or short rests then it's not fun
Not fun for you. That's completely fair. We're talking about the guidelines to prevent characters from utilizing all of the resources all the time and breaking the balance of the game.
I think it's also a good idea to look at the pcs abilitees and make encounters based on that sometimes
challange is fun, and my speciality is making sure players have fun getting their asses kicked
Oh that should be a default assumption to be honest, especially in higher tiers.
a fight will really only last a few moments in a given adventuring day. there'd still be plenty of time between those fights for resting.
short rests happen a lot in my games, 3 to 5 a day usually
My players also just really like my puzzles. But man it's hard to come up with puzzles
I like doing puzzles. Problem is my players like completely drop the ball if it's anything above Puzzles For Toddlers level.
Puzzles and riddles are not fun. I don't play D&D for word play
Again, not fun for you.
i love puzzles, a good dungeon has a variety of challanges
A good dungeon kills anyone trying to loot it
The best dungeons are the dungeons that are so notorious. Their names are lost to time and they have new ones.
Like the Dungeon of Death. Which is a real location in the Forgotten Realms.
I once made a puzzle where they had to figure out which potion was correct. The wizard said his favourite color was yellow. However if you inspected the flowers labeled in his garden, the red flowers were labeled "yellow thistle" turns out he was bad at colors
So red was the right potion
Some players once met a Die Barrel amidst some Dye Barrels. They climbed into it to dye their armor and died.
wow
I know, right? Darwinism at its finest.
It's only Darwinism, when they know if it something that will get them killed
They both melted immediately into its glowing rainbow swirls.
i had the rouge one climb into a machine that drained blood from people because he thought it was a carnival ride, i rolled damage and was about 8 points off from instant death
They'd been so excited to find a sparkly rainbow dye that they totally ignored how it was the ONLY Dye Barrel in the room named Die Barrel
You can never go wrong with presenting players with a good ol' Tower of Hanoi
One of them even noticed the 'misprint' on the barrel but they just 'assumed it was a spelling error'
It was, in fact, not a spelling error.
Why is it that so many people seem to have an issue with the 2024 rules. After reading both books it seems to me like the 2024 rules improved a lot from the 2014.
Easy
Change = Bad
Okay, see, I hear what you're saying. Counterpoint, I already paid for 2014 rules. Give me free updates
Also, no one asked for subclasses to only kick in at level 3.
Some people don't want to spend time and energy to learn new stuff even though it's not that hard to learn the changes
There's a reason I still play 3.5... and it's not because change is bad. It's because I'm cheap. And lazy.
I did. It gave me a reason to shut down complaining about starting at level 1
It's nice to limit some of the more heavily abused MC shenanigans, and they frontloaded a bunch of additonal class features in return to still make actual MC characters feel nice
Honestly a lot of classes now get cool stuff at lvl 1
And to be fair 5e did get free updates. There was a lot of errata for that system. As well as sage advice.
Initiate sorccery is cool
Really like the Druid's Primal Order
I do think the flavor of warlocks first making a pact at lvl 3 is kinda strange but oh well
The only time I really just disliked a change completely was 4th edition and it wasn't even the mechanics. It was the lore updates to the Forgotten Realms.
Because it was just stupid. Nobody liked it.
only issue is magician is really, really nice compared to warden so I end up taking it even on more martial druid builds and just MCing to make up the missing poroficiencies >.>
4e lore was a WoW expac no one asked for or wanted
cleric also has their own version for religion/arcana c:
I like the Shard minds in 4e
Weird how shardminds havent been seen in 5e with so much mindflayer and gith stuff
5.5e also has the rules glossery and massively simplifies a bunch of stuff that used to slow combat down like oposing rolls and making things just take effect on hit instead of there being a second roll to resist
When it comes to warlocks getting their subclass at level 3, I've always treated it as either.
A. You found a source of Eldritch power and knowledge either knowingly or not. And by level 3 and entity has taken interest in you or you have taken interest in an entity.
Or B, you already have a patron planned out but they want to take you on a test run first. You're basically in warlock probation.
Hello there
also really, really happy with them removing ability mods from your number of prepares spells
Yeah thats how I've flavored for now
So you're to blame for losing my extra spell slots
Tbh, the Gith and Mind Flayer stuff is 90% because of BG3
Or you took a pact with a mysterious, unkown entity and have to do legwork to uncover what sort of power you've gone and made a faustian bargain with
complaints echo so much further than contentment
Good, if complaints didn't echo, they'd never be heard and acted on
Weirdly enough they are a big part of call from the deep module
They are odly similar
and for clerics, you can only channel so much of your diety's power, and don't meet the treshold for their domain to manifest until you can handle a certain ammount
for sorcerers it's like having to grow into your bloodline
I really really hope that we get some kind of game product tie-in for the Warlock game.
I feel like we have missed three opportunities now for game products that tie into something that D&D is making.
There wasn't one for the Dark Alliance game that you can no longer buy.
There wasn't really a game product, for the D&D movie. And you could I guess call Descent Into Avernus at game product tie to BG3. But those things were four full years apart.
I hear the logical points you're making and I don't like them. Stop making sense, it's making my rage feel irrational. How dare you
the new heroes of faerun have a lot of bg3 content
we got an MTG tie in though
If we can get a full box set for the final season of stranger things I think we can get stuff for D&D's own stuff. You know what I mean
My campaigns have been primarily starting at level 3, so the change hasn’t been noticeable tbh
Lorwyn was the definition of "oh crap tack it on"
3 is a very good place to start
But in some cases it does feel weird to get a subclass at level 3
Isn't strixhaven mtg tie in
If you're not starting at 1 and dying to your first Giant Spider, are you really an aspiring adventurer-in-training?
The mtg tie ins were cool ish
Strixhavern, Lorwyn, Theros, and Ravnica City of Guilds
im the opposite, trying to make different projects on the same timeline to tie them in seems like a fools errand
So it's mtgs fault silvery barbs excists
let them cook and serve it as its ready i say
yep c:
Nobody knows what my pfp is a reference to when I talk in my lgs discord, and it saddens me
Wither and bloom could have been better also >.>
These decisions are typically made Years in advance. I give a lot of grace because of COVID and stuff. There is time to plan.
i sold a dozen athervials at their peak price a few years back, paid for me to get a 3d printer and a bunch of other stuff
Still no excuse for no dragonlocks
Dracolich patron when?
Sammaster Warlock daddy when
Draolich patron?
nothing else needs to exist that they need to make excuses for
things will come as they come, building up these expecations leads to resentment
So how does hair on Dragonborn’s work
Is it like scale hair similar to how The Thing in Marvel grows a beard or is it just normal ass hair?
I think one of my next pcs is a celestial warlock, who basically has to help the adventures because of heavenly community service
I didn't need expectations to have resentment, all I needed was Hasbro being Hasbro
Depends on the setting In the Realms its not hair but tendril like plumes.
dont let them live rent free in your head like that
TBF, I've never once run into Aether Vial personally, so fair
enjoy your games, and if you cant, drop them and find a new game
I suppose that makes sense
Never really thought about it until now
Don't worry, I don't have feelings, just a rage meter.
you need to calm yourself then, getting mad about whats happining to a game is going to cause you issues
Raffinity winter still haunts me
Peace is a LIE
Alright thank you all for the assistance. I am joining a new group and I am newer to dnd as a whole and there was already an argument before our session 0 about what ruleset we were playing. A lot of people didn’t care but it seemed we were going to do 2024. Then one guy came in and was like no 2024 sucks and we should play 2014 and a few others joined his bandwagon idk it was weird.
I played legacy for awhile, had masterpiece vials and adored them, but I just couldn’t play it much anymore and sold them
I usually don't care about WotC Product launches beyond Hype. The Lorwyn one though was just dumb. The most detailed game fantasy setting ever and a poorly tacked on MTG setting was the best option they could come up with as the third secret DLC? Like bruh. How did this happen?
What is the DMs opinion?
It was primarily a legacy/modern card for awhile, so it’s understandable
i opened so much mirrodin when it was new
Ye, I play more EDH&Pauper, and some standard back around WAR
and the odd game of historic brawl on arena
it only is a lie if you cant protect your own
desperately waiting for a roadmap this is getting wild
He doesn’t care ahah. I am going to bring both editions to session 0 today as I am not entirely sure what was decided.
As a DM, my opinion is 'anything WotC puts in the DnDB Marketplace is fair game for my campaigns'
Are you running a module?
Yea, either there was a mid year shake up in 2025 or they were waiting for Eberron to come out after its delay and then holidays.
Again I don’t know 🤷♂️
I am kinda sceptical about this campaign cause the dm doesn’t really communicate much
they're back in office as of next week apparently; so I'd assume then at the earliest
Agreed, im hoping for some good new big Campaign books set in the Forgotten realms
You are kinda limiting yourself, since 2014 isn't getting more support since from now on 2024 is what they will focuse on to expand. Also if its because there is something they want to use from 2014 rules like a subclass it can get ported
Gib me the story of Sultana Songal Wotc. Let us play out that rise to power.
i have the radical opinion that all of 5e is backwards and forwards compatable, because thats been my experience with it so far and it all just works
ooh, shes my villian in my calimport campaign, its getting spicy
I just REALLY want the Dark Sun book for Preservation Druid (and would like it to be AL legal for the FR campaign)
and hopefully they don't mess with it too much, maybe some of the later spell selection or giving it a more interesting level 14 ability
This always happens. Every edition. Personally, I don't mind that people prefer a certain edition but when it gets into, "NO! We're playing the PERFECT edition! MY ONE! THAT I LIKE!" That's when I back away slowly.
Thank you again Kas for pointing out there was Art of Songale by her spell!
Jason Tondro! Give me a Lands of Intrigue Campaign and my life is yours!
Peace is the slippery good intentions to complacency, followed immediately by skill issued DOOM
Ysabel Linden has the perfect Tee up to be a Monsterous Villain
I'm to the point where I'm only interest in making 2024 characters
just vastly prefer the revision
I have already told my players for all campaigns going forward, your options are 5e Revised PHB forward + Tasha Custom Lineage.
Grim Hollow human or bust
(though even I'd agree GH humans might actually be too strong)
I only allow Setting Specifc third party products. Since I am all Realms All of the Time. That limits it to DMsGUILD
xanathar's still has a few fun spells and we're waiting on updates for a bunch of subclasses q_q
been using wildfire druid as a lifeline as it has a somewhat similar spell list to preservation while I wait
I'd not played terribly much 2014 to begin with tbf; half a campaign and a handfull of oneshots
I prefer multiclassing and 2024 smooths over a lot of the issues 2014 gave me when doing so
also eliminated a lot of the low hanging, easily abusable stuff that MC was associated with
MC?
multiclass/mutliclassing
Just ban multiclassing, e-z
noooo
Then no more druid/monk/pally combos
the regular spellcasters aren't martial enough and the half casters are too martial
I don't ban Multiclassing but my general rule is.
If your Multiclass has a proper noun name on places like r/3d6 its not happening.
Looking at you Sorcadin
I just want to play my dumb druid/warlock MC
it's objectively worse than pure druid but I find it fun so
At first, I preferred 2014, but the more I learned about and played 2024, the more entertaining that version became. Now I personally prefer 2024 but I do miss some aspects of 2014.
That’s a brilliant idea. Why didn’t I do that?
I love helping my players multiclass, we'll talk about what they want to do and I help enable it
what are the most common "problem multiclasses" aside from sorcadin?
Enabling multiclassing is what brought us to this point
There aren't problem metaclasses
Sorcadin isn't actually a problem. Especially with 2024
I don't think there's any more of a problem multiclass as a problem full class.
We must revive Dual-Classing. Humans only
Because you're split on wis/cha for spellcasting mods, but a 5 point dip doesn't lose you much and you get lots of fun options off of warlock
i just want to know for the future so i dont accidentally make characters that everyone hates lol
im not really into multiclassing though
I’m so doing that next time I’m a player
Multiclasses are actually weak in comparison to full class progression
Worrying about an unrealized future is just borrowing trouble
Just picture the character and use class levels and feats etc to build out the cool stuff you want to do
Just go with what you want. If a DM has a problem, they'll bring it up. Otherwise, do whatever build your mind is set on!
It's highly recommended that you talk to your DM. A good DM is going to help you realise the character
A bad one will be like "no you can't make that character"
I go very martial with it, GOOlock with pact of the blade stuff; was very conflicted between GOOlock and Archfey but like'd the naritive options GOOlock provides.
But you could easily go more caster with it as well
alright
I just imagine how cool my character will look like using given ability before choosing it
Yes it was my main reason for picking Control Weather
Sometimes the answer may not be multiclassing at all! Sometimes what you're looking for can be done single classed easy enough
Makes sense to me.
have to do a lot of homework to keep up with single class cahracters in the near, mid , and long term
You say that, but wait until you encounter a....I wanna say Monk/Sorc?/Palemaster, I think it was? Bloody thing could reach an AC of 95 at level 40.
And a good DM is going to help you because a good DM is a fan of your character
- Player: "I would like to multiclass!"
- DM: "Okay what would you like?"
- Player: "I want to multiclass into Warlock."
- DM: "But you are a Paladin why wo-"
- Player: "And it will be a Hexblade!"
- DM: "Oh..."
Lots of subclasses, specific items, spell choices, or plain just reflavoring things
That, and if you try to go beyound 2level of another class it gonna be rough
You say that like people don't build up feats and such to abuse mechanics with full classes too. XD
So help them build a sorcadin hexblade that they and the table can have fun with
Blackguard of Asmodeus
Lies, no DM will get fooled by that, they would figure this shit out the moment paladin said they want to pick warlock
Insert Squidward meme.jpg
No matter whether you ban multiclasses or not, you will always get min maxers or meta builders. And in some tables, who cares?
Oh the worst crime, a player wanting to do something cool lol
yeah :x
easier with martials, or delaying the later parts of the minor class until after you've got several in the major one, but then most games don't go long enough to realize the full split
Doing cool things is cool, as long as it's not breaking the campaign to do it
No idea how a hexblade is going to break a campaign. I don't even like hexblade as a concept but it's nothing extraordinary
And if it is, there's always Tarrasques and Mimic Towns.
Even at the height of smiting multiple times a turn in '14 it wasn't a big deal
Yes but you will prevent some players kneecapping themselves by accident
It harder to break a campaign than you think
It is also easier than you think
Counterpoint, https://www.youtube.com/shorts/AcQ8OBq-oXE
I have no issues with players wanting to try something outside of the bounds of the system and work with that. About half of the multiclassers I run into are trying to spell snipe eldritch blast from 500 feet away so no one attacks them ever.
One of my rules is I want to balance encounters around the party not around one player who went hog wild.
Could be my experiences with West Marches.
Oh no Eldrich sniper, whatever will I do... Oh hey look a wall
Which is why it's great to talk to your dm about realizing the cool character
like, once Preservation druid releases; My progression with her is probably
Druid, 2 in warlock, 6~8 in druid, 3 in warlock, then the remainder druid
even if I really want to go druid, 2 warlock, druid, 3 warlock, remainder druid to fronload the naritively interesting abilites
Is sorcadin… that bad
The look of defeat when the Tiefling with wings eldritch sniper has to go into a dungeon is a dopamine rush /s
like, if I could gestalt level my first 5 level that'd be great XD
(I know it’s quite the experience, but I loved it so much)
The look of dismay on warlock snipers face when their target pulls a curtain over the window and they have to spend multiple shots breaking through
warlock
takes Eldritch Spear
never finds a spot in the campaign they can actually see an enemy from 240 feet to shoot with it
me with longbow and sharpshooter
No, all the campaigns I played had no characters what so ever
but just having the option feels nice so
