I roll bad, sadly
Work with your party
Like it's not on the full casters, but it's on the half casters and warlock is basicly a 1/3 caster
Are you unable to play with a party in westmarch?
My Warlock got bullied hard last night lmao
We were fighting those Antimagic Bear creatures and I got absolutely smacked 😭
2024 Artificer also didn't get it for some stupid reason
Not even them battlesmiths
yeah, that's bad
I just dipped my 2024 battlesmith into rogue. A little extra damage, expertise, and masteries. Why not?
They aren't martial classes they don't need masteries
I tried to Synaptic Static them
But they have a reaction where they can dash at whoevers casting the spell , hit then AND potentially make them lose the spell 😭
Multiclassing for mysteries is cool and good
Artificer is a 1/3 to 1/2 caster. I'm doing more martial things with artificers than with my warlock.
tbf, artificer is like half caster half crafter
That is your choice but, you get spells and artificers have on hit stuff as is
"Those anti-magic bears". What anti-magic bear. Is that from some module?
while the others are half caster half martial
Vecna: Eve of Ruin.
Battlesmith is literally built to primarily use weapons. They have second attack, int on their weapons, etc.
We were on/in (?) Eberron when we encountered them
Artillarists can be a martial or a caster. Armorer is mainly a martial. And the others are mainly casters.
Battlesmiths are casters that havr a secondary element in the action economy
Most of their abilities revolve around martial combat.
Artificers are casters who can play at martial, just like warlocks
If a battlesmith isn't using weapons, I'd be concerned for their build.
Shocking Grasp only time
Druid initiate charisma shillelagh and pact blade might be a fun lil thing for me to try later. Just bonking peeps with raw charisma
You aren't required to play non martials
And you can of course multiclass to martial to get martial only things
I think Battlesmith at the very least should have weapon masteries.
People can play things..
✨ However they please! ✨
Given that their whole entire kit is revolved around weapons (and their companion) and they get second attack.
i make my own rules
can i cast a spell on my dm?
At your own risk
lol
Or shall I say "You can try." (tm)
My Paladin (genies pally)
Didn't use Armor or Shields, he Dual-Wielded a Scimitar and a Shortsword! ... and was still a strength build! Lmao
He's deceased now 😔
I bought myself baldurs gate 3 and I am really loving it
Downloaded the soulknife rogue mod too
BG3 is so good. I wanna replay it using the mod that makes levelling scale to level 20.
Artificers are great without masteries
It is a small sliver of niche protection that only martials get masteries
So are Bladelocks 🔥
Or just take a feat for masteries
My bladelocks current weapon is a Staff of Power 💀
Yep, that's another way to reflect additional training
im not super familiar with artificer: its a martial/caster hybrids?
It's similar to warlock. Half casting with a bunch of other stuff
I am only level 4, act 1.
Went on an undercover stealth mission in the goblin camp, rescued Master Halsin and unleashed complete and utter havoc upon all goblins in the camp once i got bear man free 😈😈
Artificer at base is more caster half-caster, the subclasses are more defining
Not a martial class that specializes in weapon things. More magic/support that has a few subclasses that can do magic assisted martialesque things
that makes sense
The subclasses are very, very different from each other.
My first playthrough I uh...I uh joined the goblins.
That's why my human water sorc wears a treated turtle shell on her back instead of wearing armor, using Mage Armor, or making use of a shield. However, while it provides +3 Misc AC, it also requires 13+ Str and weighs 24 lbs.
They're also more attuned with magic items, able to create them with infusions built in their kit, craft a little easier (depending on the subclass and 2014 v 2024), and can attune to more of them.
My Aberrant Mind Sorcerer never used any defensive spells and only had 11 AC lol
Regardless, he was a threat to society at large /Half-Joke
So Dex is your dump stat huh?
That's not including their spell storing abilities at level 10, their ability to add modifiers to rolls, etc etc. They are very versatile.
Would you believe 'no'? Actually, it's even higher than her Cha
Yeah, definitely have more than enough without masteries
His best moment was a Quickened Sunbeam and absolutely melting a boss completely by himself lol
does the paladin at higher levels rules of 2014 get more divinity channel uses ?? or does it stay a t1 ??
I still dipped for masteries 🤣 At least with my Artificer that won't reach level 20.
My Artillarist is staying full artificer cuz he can actually get to level 20. And he uses cantrips.
You know what,
That's completely fair!
If you aren't missing out in anything than sobeit 🔥
My Warlock, Cleric and Barbarian all have the unfortunate circumstances of all being in campaigns that go to 20 💀
Not that I'd multiclass any of them because honestly... nothing else fits them! Lol
Unfortunate?
In a joking manner
Guess when theyre outta spells they arent outta options.
As an ocean-inclined sorc, her physical stats are actually extremely high in comparison to a more normal sorc. 15 Str, 18 Dex, 17 Con, 10 Int, 12 Wis, 17 Cha at level 4.
I dunno what level the Fighter I'm playing is going to end at, but he'd probably be a Druid multiclass due to growing up around animals and his Devotion to protecting them
Dics roll?
Manual roll, yeah
Love me the 4d6 drop the lowest. I can see how ya got that too. Ive had a time where I rolled 4 6's.
And yeah, she uses her Returning Trident of Warning when magic's not cutting it.
1/1296 chance, holy
I should say I am in favor of dipping for masteries
Happened once, never again.
I’d imagine
honnestly prefer Standard Array / Point buy
rolling can easily lead to terribly imballanced parties
Same
Doesnt your DM just let you write down the numbers and place them where you want?
As a Grim Hollow human, she was supposed to get 3 martial weapon proficiencies, but I traded two of them to specialize in Tridents and give my Trident of Warning the Returning feature. Because again, aquatic. And nothing would suck quite as much as my trident plummeting into a near-bottomless abyss from which I have to dive down to retrieve the bloody thing.
It's funny so often people say rolling benefits roleplay because you can have bad stats but... most tables that roll have convoluted ways to be rolling like extra d6es drop lowest, reroll the array/use highest at then table or whatnot
I have had no issues with rolling stats yet. I prefer it, it makes builds more entertaining.
I do a system where I have everyone roll, and then I turn each person's results into a point buy, and then everyone gets the highest result.
I like the challenge of crafting my character's themes and cool stuff out of a standard array or point buy
It also helps not break bounded accuracy (in either direction)
And ensures that there is room for growth
At the end of the day if you roll so terribly, ask your DM to reroll.
Yes, but point total wise you commonly end up with characters with low 70 point totals playing with 80~90 point totals
Note to self: Stealing this.
I like more feats than more ASIs. It makes your character more fleshed out imo.
It's funny when people manage to roll an 18 and use their ability score increase to get to 20 jn their main stat... then as they level they don't have anywhere to go
Thats the luck of it.
Feats all carry an asi now so like if I start at 20 strength and level 4 I want great weapon master.... oops
Level up dex.
I do feats at that point or increase another score like con or dex.
There's plenty of places to go, no idea what you're talking about
Oh sorry. I forgot to turn that off.
Oops my bad sorry
literally being punished before the game even starts is kinda bad game design for a character you are potentially using for years
Again...Reroll.
dm fiat, depending on your dm, you might not be allowed to
I did just give gwm as the example. If I'm a high strength fella playing with heavy weapons.... I'm going to want room to grow and gwm only provides strength
Most servers that do that have an alternative. Roll stats, hate them? Use standard array or point buy (usually modified to be similar to their rolled stats so it isn't super unfair).
"Just take dex" doesn't actually work when you can only get strength.
Anyway you don't have to like growing a character over levels, I just said I like it
GWM provides other bonuses. It's a half feat so it has the 'feat' portion. Or plan ahead. Put the +2 into something else and work your strength up with feats.
Well its more to take dex or con so your saves are better.
I feel that starting at maximum is some 3.5 videogamey stuff that doesn't sit too well with the way I like to play
You're right there are other feats that aren't the example I used
Wonder what my first d20 roll in 2026 will be
It's just wild how far over your heads my point went
Hey I’m new to dungeons & dragons like literally brand new and I’d like to know literally everything about it, the board game online game lore everything. Any people wanna help?
It better be a 20
Woe, Nat 1 be upon ye!!!!
Muhahaha!!!
It didn't go over my head. It's a bad point.
My second rolled stats of 2026 had a total of 55
Cool, happy new year fella
It's not 2026 for me yet!
Yeah getting your stats maxed out as quick as possible. Means that you can spend your ASI on feats that develop your characters in better ways than a simple stat boost.
I curse ye with a Nat 1 on your next alcohol-related Fort save
I still have time left this year!
How should I go about writing my backstory style wise?
Cuz I feel like I'm struggling to find the sweet spot between summarizing his past and giving thorough descriptions of what he's gone through
If I get an 18 in a stat, I do choose to not max it out. I can wait till level 8, 12, or 16 to max it out. 18 on a melee or spellcaster is fine. I'll use my stat plus to increase another stat. Maybe my lowest stat, which could be a 3 WIS if I'm unlucky.
You should be able to describe any character in a single paragraph.
Better be the party face with a charisma of four
Any more than that is fun fluff.
So my ascendant dragon monk is a jelly boy, level 6, how do I go from strong to absolute unit!? Currently have the charger feat and eldritch claw tatoo and a +1 wraps of unarmed prowess
Jokes on you, none of my characters really drink alcohol
Jokes on you, I meant your next alchol fort save
The big thing that I have on backstories as a DM who loves detailed backstories is create one that is appropriate for your starting level. For instance every single player character in Baldur's Gate 3 is a terrible example of a level 1 backstory. They all represent characters who must have been de-leveled before starting the avenger
I ALSO don't drink that much!
My primary character's has hooks that work anywhere from levels like 1 to ~12
Hey and if you're starting in a high level that's great
why don't people like starting at level 5+
you can also have a lore reason for being de-leveled (which is what bg3 does)
I do :x
Because the game starts at 1
It can be as simple as this:
I was raised at a farm in a small village named Aeren. My family taught me how to effectively use a crossbow so I could protect the farm in case danger presents itself, like wolves or goblins. When I got older, I was going to inherit the farm. A red dragon rampaged through my village and my father was caught in the crossfire. My farm is ashes. I took a crossbow and a sword and vowed to defeat this dragon but I must get stronger. I left my village to try my hand at adventuring, gathering what little resources I had left.
--
That took me less than 5 minutes. Just a quick summary of the important events and flesh them out over time.
I want to steal Tiamats Divinity, how's that for a goal
that's basicly what I have, broad strokes wise
I dunno. I like metroid prime and assassins creed 1 and all those other stories that have a strong character who lost their power who's working to regain it. It can be done well, in my opinion.
And while there can be a lore reason for why your character was deleveled, that should really be something set up by the DM, which is an exception to the normal case of doing your best to not do that
Humor me, how would one go about doing such a thing?
And some people don't need more than that! Some people like fleshing out details. It's totally up to you.
I also try to write down names of important people for my dm.
And it should be something that affects the entire party, not a specific singular character
I think a lot of people like seeing their character grow over time. which is obviously fine, but if you’re going to do that the character should have an appropriate backstory
Well, if you're looking to steal the Divinity of a specific god, the first question I have to ask is which setting you're doing it in
Like an aasimar character can literally be played as a fallen celestial who is working to get back into the graces of their god
I like starting at level 3 max. 5 is just too late and I like to develop what I'm going to do over time. I do not like starting at level 1 though, too squishy. A goblin can fart on you and you're dead.
Or a tiefling as a fiend who defied their father and was kicked out of the hells
According to the internet there are ways, I'm thinking of trying to make a deal with Bahamut to try and help
yall im getting so tired of some of the DMs i find on here. i signed up for a new campaign and session 0 was meant to be today and i had everything built and ready and then i got kicked out of the server and blocked by the dm when literally nothing had happened yet. i even skipped out on a dinner with my family to accommodate to their schedule and they knew
Playing with strangers for the first time is really hard. I'm sorry about that.
Or perhaps your backstory is you were an amazing mage and you were cursed and blocked from the weave so now you're a level 1 fighter
My Divine Soul water sorc, who would much rather be back still adventuring in Saltmarsh's coastal regions, was drawn away from the seaside to Red Larch due to Elemental Evil shenanigans, so she's gotta put a stop to the Cult of the Crushing Wave and take back their stolen water-related objects. Trishina's the dolphin goddess, but also protector of children, and since my water sorc was the most fit to challenge an elemental cult misusing the power of water....
Cast Karsus's Avatar
Flaky people = online games
that sucks....were you the only one booted?
I’ll know mine tonight
I've played a Aasimar who was a super tiny god of a tiny pond in the middle of nowhere and my DM had me level up based on how many followers I had. I had Paladin with Oath of Devotion subclass.
Lol what
no idea, i assume multiple people. the dm is also a content creator apparently too
truth
Just because that's been your personal experience doesn't make it a universal truth.
I have had atleast 20 DM's flake on me before session 1
That is an astounding number
-# Sounds like you're the common denominator to me
there's your problem
most people who describe themselves as content creators are kinda off
20 is crazy holy
I hate to be rude, but that sounds more like a you problem than a DM problem.. are you sure you're not putting them off somehow?
Thanks for insulting me, I try to be as nice as possible to my new DM's but how am I supposed to change for them before session 0
I don't know, I use proper grammar, be nice, try to make my characters fit their campaign, run everything by them
You shouldn't have to change for your dungeon master. Sorry you had a bunch of bad fits
Hai
I wasn't insulting you. I was saying you're the common denominator.
Hello
Welcome to Chili's
It's just that alot of online DM's are just flaky as hell from my personal experience
Goooood morning after-
Wait wtf Chili’s?!
And life happens. There have been times where I've been excited to start a new campaign and then the day before I lose my job.
That campaign's not happening anymore.
Sir, this is a Wendy's....
correlation is not causation
I have aquired my first Blåhaj
And it's always before session 1 so I don't even know what I did most of the time
Wendy's is so bad nowadays....
I said its a Chili's, so it's a goddamned Chili's!
Lord of goofy decree.
Gulp…
Chili's is alright I think.
So are we employees or…
Literally had a DM recently flake on me before we even got to the interview
I think you mean to say *people. This has nothing to do with it being online.
No, this is Patrick!
I had a guy once as a player who was the most involved in pre-session planning. We would have Discord VC conversations that would last for hours because he was so excited about the campaign.
After the first session he ghosted, all of us, deleted his roll. 20 account, deleted his D&D Beyond, and blocked all of us on Reddit.
I still to this day have no idea why he did that
It just happens sometimes and that's okay
Depends....
Holds up a Job application
BOO!!!
I got flaked on once but it was 100% reasonable because the DM worked third shift over Christmas the day before and is otherwise a really chill DM
one shot AL game so not too beat up about it
Well I do need money
No the dude literally offered to interview me twice, we set the days and I got prepared
Lmao
Sent a "You alive?" on the first miss and dude just never came around for the second interview time
What is this a job application?
-# I've not done a job application once in my life... companies reach out to me to hire me :v
Dam, the lords of the aybss got to him.
I mean I make my players fill out an application.
You're fired
No, they’re Azerick
Like the only problem I may have is asking too much questions on stuff but that's quite literally the point of D&D
And that's a nugget of truth.
And if I am running in person. We conduct the interview in real life. You meet me somewhere That's not my house. And we do a vibe check, smell, test all the bells and whistles
I gotta meet my firing people quota, man, the Archdevils'll have my ass if I don't
No, they're a potential bot and faceless internet voice.
and I bet the owner is the sort that complains it's impossible to find workers who want to work
Im sorry for asking if were running XP or milestone 😔
Noooo
You're hired.
Gotta hire people to fire them
yep, nailed it in one XD
Yippyyy
One of my nicknames has been android for over 3 decades.
And now you're fired!!!!
Oops- wrong person lmao
Tbf I’ve never really had issues finding a game online… I got into a game and I wasn’t even looking for one
I once had a player who got offended that I asked to meet at a neutral location before a game.
I was like " my brother in lathander. If you think I'm going to invite a complete and total stranger from the internet into my home, you are either naive or bad."
Everyone always told me to get into trades, it's easy to get a job but annoying to keep one
HR is just Tiamat waiting to eat you
"Lathander?! Nah. I'm good." - Zariel
"Take your complaints up to HR! Tell Tiamat we sent her a snack."
HR genuinely gotta be a demonic force or something
No way a human being can look at open & shut scenarios and decide to fire like 4 people
Well see, there was your first major mistake, Lose-ander's such a bad god. Velsharoon / Vecna / Urgathoa or bust.
hr would at least be devils, not demons.
" You are not my real Dad!" -Zariel
HR is getting shoved into Jubilex's slime dimension and slowly corroding
loseander
"Well you can keep your job at goblin incorporated, you just have to watch this 72 hour recording on respecting kobold rights."
Friendship ended with Lathander
Asmodeus is now my best friend.
"I literally just offered them moss!"
She kinda has a pretty good reason to hate Lathander.
Friendship Ended with Asmodeus,
Baphomet Is manwife now.
Not as good as Helm, but still.
Anyone who seriously worships Baphoment deserves their misery
Goober
I'm miserable without worshipping the damn bastard!
My hot take is that Jander Sunstar was the biggest missed opportunity in BG: DIA.
How is that a hot take?
"Lemme go worship a demon lord of LIES and BETRAYAL, surely I won't be LIED TO and BETRAYED like his enemies!"
That's the most reasonable take I've read today.
Listen, I want to hug Minotaurs all day, some of you like WEIRDER things!
Well you see a Avernus is hot
All Demon Lord's lie and betray, it's nothing new lmao
Who?
What type of deals do these demon lords give out for people to worship them?
Like I expect bare minimum immortality or something
It would be spoiler territory to say more
Baphomet is also the king of BEASTS as well
DMs?
None that Baphomet actually intends to keep, being, you know, the demon lord of LIES and BETRAYAL
Just Google it lol
An Elven vampire who was a paladin of the morning Lord, who introduced the faith of lathander to the mists of ravenloft.
Depends entirely lol can’t rlly say
Notably, Lies and Betrayal is more Graz'zts thing.
Well all devils have to honor their contrscts
It's gotta be like deals in times of need 90% of the time, they have to find desperate mentally ill people too make deals with
Jander Sunstar tussled with Strahd von Zarovich and attempted to tutor him to be better than his Banal nature when he arrived in Ravenloft.
Demons don't
Just to how they do it
Eh. Only if they're caught.
Sure, but devils always get you with fine print made of invisible ink and the world's tiniest handwriting
There's a whole system for it.
"You can get three days off a week" deal
Unfortunately, very true.
The best devils don't make a deal for your soul. But make you do things that corrupt your soul all on your own.
They really would, aye. Just look at personality cults, rich CEOs, and various political figures.
You don't even need to cover it up a little bit. Just offer money or power.
We don't even need devil deals for people to make them IRL
Eh, I think I'd Worship a Devil over a Demon.
'Least Devils can be reasoned with and probably won't kill you for stepping out of line without hearing you out first
Mischievous devil mage that makes wacky inventions for the demon lord's army
Till the hero breaks in and you genuinly gotta lock in and start making war crimes
or stick to the wacky inventions to the end
a captain goes down with their ship
You got the hero's companion trapped and tell him to solve a riddle or they get hit with the "throngler"
All fun and games until you find the tier 4 party with a DM who allows homebrew spells and items [it's all over]
Just gotta close your eyes and accept that you are either going to be erased or turned into a goofy party buddy [you cant run]
Yes but there's one member who's extremely paranoid
I have lofty goals of killing an ancient chromatic evil witch and stealing her Divinity, what crazy goals have you guys set for your characters?
Getting to the end of a campaign without it being cancelled
The best goal honestly
Lol fair, our groups been going strong for over a year so far
Never surpassed level 13 in a campaign. Only went to level 20 in a westmarch so doesn't count.
Ours folded after 3 years. Keep it strong and continue sessions when only 3 players can make it still
Got to level 18 then the campaign imploded
Lowk just gotta find a solid 4 player party and your set
Scheduling is tbe biggest issue
Cause life happens... sickness amongst other things.
I was 2 sessions away from seeing the campaign complete
2 dog, then the DM wanted to kick a player and deleted the server when it backfired
I just wished we had one last session and risked it all or nothing to fight the bbeg
I have a question is it possible to be a part of two different campaigns as a noob? Like I feel one session a week might not be enough to satisfy me
I made it to 37 once back in 3.5. We retired characters because every encounter was the DM having to make custom monsters/enemies for us
Yes you can have multiple characters multiple sessions. Up to you
Just don’t put them back to back, I did that and it still didn’t feel like enough because I had to wait 5 days
Happy new year BTW
At that point throw God's at you
Nothing is stopping you and it is fun to try multiple concepts
You see the issue then
Good point thanks
I mean they have a statblock and never get used... some crazy 30s next to eachother would cause some problems
Level 37 or not...
You I think so too
Tiamat combined with tarasque and other crs. Would still be a problem at level 37
Correct its no longer storytelling
Its power for sake of power lol.
Disagree. Because 3.5 only scales well so far up
Happy new year
Dexter
The 100
HAPPY NEW YEARR!!
i got flash backs to when they killed mind flayer made of flesh with fireworks 🥲

Never!

New year wish ruined
Anyway DND!
What’s everyone’s dnd goals for this year?
To finally play
Happy new year from the UK
I want to do another short one shot in Ebberon. It focuses on a cult who is trying to build the Emptiness Machine in order to be remade into beings of bliss and joy.
What it does it strips away all humanity.
Each part is guarded by a dungeon focusing on people who are robbed a core part of their identity. The mini-BBEG (coining that term) reoccurs to stop the PCs, slowly becoming lesser and lesser.
At the end they fight the BBEG and the mini-BBEG is there - as either a friend or foe, depending on events up to that point.
My planning says about 12-16 sessions.
That sounds awesome
Looking for a few players and a dungeon master dm me if your interested dm can choose most aspects
Uh go to #looking-for-dm and #looking-for-players
Ok
The problem is how much work it looks like I have lined up. I’m technically off but just saw I’m probably going to be in Poland for work for 2 weeks (which means I can’t even run my home game, let alone a new one).
Scheduling once again, being the true BBEG
Haha I’d like to propose this isn’t so much scheduling as it is “work hustle” 😩
How to I add a thing on there
Hi
Hi
Instructors are in #find-a-game ! You can type commands in any channel you can type, including this one!
Ok
How everyone today
Good, enjoying Wizard as always
I love watching DND and playing
For my character to survive long enough to be a father
hey Steve, there's a one off album called Guilt Machine by Arjen Lucassen and emptiness machine just made me think of it
You have my attention
anyway it's a beautiful album and you might enjoy it!
He already has a partner, just need for 2 wars to be over and ideally to propose before too
These days, being promised a machine can help us, only to be revealed to be killing us, is really resonating with my story telling…
That's just life
the first track has suuuuper evocative lyrics for some kind of machine that kind of erases bad (by erasing good)
Cant be morally wrong if there are no morals :)
What did y'all think of dragon of ice spire peak?
Or are there any other modules to run as a beginner dm
it's not bad, its good if you want a starting campaign that's plot can alter based on where the group goes
That's good
Okay, so. In the off chance I have to play a 2024 campaign, could someone give me a summary for a spellcasting class that hasn't changed much from 2014?
Bonus points on if it's a Cleric or Warlock
Cleric and warlock had a bunch of changes
Wizards had the least.
The basic rules are free, you should peruse them
And subclasses are now delayed til level 3, like that somehow needed altering
Wizard is likely the Spellcaster with least changes in its class
Subclass wise it’s a bit of a different story.
Wizard now gets expertise and their subclass now gives them a bunch of free spells of their school each level.
And they made it more clear about Ritual casting and their spellbook by making it it’s own feature (functions the same)
Of course every caster you see will have a good amount of changes because some spells have changed
Sorry for interrupting
Also a change in the Bonus action spellcasting rule but that isn’t really too relevant for wizards
I'll see myself out
Hello! We have #dnd-newcomers for people just joining the game!
Amen to that
ngl after playing life is strange, it does give me some ideas for my strixhaven campaign
I wanted to choose that because Wizard is... not something I am an expert with
What exactly changed for Warlock and Cleric? I know Cleric doesn't have domains now
They have 4 domains as their subclasses. They get them at level 3. They can now heal or do damage with channel divinity. They also get an extra channel divinity. Also their max prepared spells are based on class level and not your Wisdom modifier.
Destroy Undead is replaced with Sear undead as its an AOE of damage now as well.
And Warlocks?
Divine Intervention at 10th level recreates a cleric spell and 20th is the Wish spell
Pact boons are now part of invocations, their subclasses actually auto prepare their spells instead of adding to their spell lists, and more Invocations
And the Pact boons/Invocations have tweaks as well too.
Oh yeah they have a once a day ability to get spell slots without Resting
So, unfortunately, someone has already claimed Fighter for the next campaign
Why not just build a different Fighter?
Fighter's can do long ranged too
Pet peeve. I hate doubling classes
So?
I would prefer to try out a full spellcaster
Preferably Cleric, Warlock, or possibly sorcerer
Well good luck with that.
Well, i want good help with that
Not too familiar with 2024, but if that's the campaign, then might as well start learning 2024
Eh just reread your features you get and you should be fine.
I have had a lot of folks have their first experience with the 2024 options in my games, there's a lot more that is the same than is different
Well, I'm just a little stuck
Part of it is also it being hard to choose which to do
Roll a d12 and just stick with it. 12 classes in the PHB after all.
It's just alphabetical
...it was a joke
top to bottom, probably barbarian
Has anyone used a false hydra before?
Yeah, it's power scales with how good your players are with notes
phew, what a year. i just did my final tally and i ran 326 sessions of DND this year
Is a githyanki silver sword a magical item?
Yes
how come they're magical?
"They were powerful magical greatswords that came in two varieties, depending on the wielder's rank. Their most notable property was the ability to sever an individual's silver cord."
Pretty sure every legendary weapon in D&D has magic
Because they can cut the silver cord that attaches your astral body to your physical self
If it does more than cut, it's probably magical
is the aftethought a magical item? [vecna's dagger for those who don't know[
oh DAMN
Yes, it is magical
If it's uncommon or above, probably magical
If it has any rarity, it is magical.
How has it worked out for you in play?
Unless it's an Antimagic Sword, maybe. Like that rock Drizzt used to keep in a lead cup.
sorry for all the random questions but just so I can clarify, is the lady of pain a diety or is she simply just.. something?
So-so, if you have a smart cookie in your party they can find out in a session or two
not a deity
kind of like an uhhh, cosmic law?
That's intentionally unclear, but 'not a deity' is accurate, since deities can't enter Sigil
yeah I think the lady of pain is a diety in some form but not exactly a goddess
She's not. She explicitly kills anyone who even thinks of worshipping her.
Pelor is one of my favorite gods
is she a celestial then?
She's a being beyond gods
It's like gravity, she just kind of exists
so sort of like what the titans are to the greek gods?
She's.... a fundament part of Sigil. Not a god, not an Outsider of some kind. It's as if Sigil itself is 'alive' and she's the form it took.
She's basically the game engine
I see. Interesting. Never used one before and it gives Time of the Silence vibes ala Doctor Who. Though, the players don't get a saving throw after it plays its song.
ah right, so she is sigil?
She's just apart of reality
She's spent so long in Sigil that she doesn't know where she ends and Sigil begins
right.
She knows everything that happens everywhere in it at all times
And her power alone is enough to block all deity powers and the deities themselves in her city
the lore I'm building so far is that there are 4 beings above gods, being Ao, lady of pain, dark powers and asmodeus
yeah so she might as well be sigil itself with how much control she has over it lol
She's not necessarily 'above' gods, but she absolutely does not want to become one. It's why she instantly kills anyone who dares to worship her.
There's only one true being above all in D&D
say it with me, the DM
That would be the DM
No, player imagination.
Nope
DM is just an engine for controlled chaos
The idea that the dm is above the players is one of the most toxic ideas
Never said the DM is above players, I said the DM is above all the being's within their set universe of D&D
he's implying that in-lore the DM's role is an ultimate diety that rules everything considering it's the DM's job to build the entire world and bring it to life
So the players get to choose the BBEG?
clearly it's wizard, who wants a d6 for a hit die
Which is entirely untrue.
Wizard dies of 1d4 greed for bigger die damage
we didn't mean it seriously lmao it's just a funny way of explaining who the ultimate diety is because there is no true ultimate creator in dnd
The idea that players play no part in building the world or bringing it to life is hilariously wrong.
So your telling me as a DM, if I decide to end a campaign the players have a play in it?
A lot of times campaigns end because of the players, so yeah
at least we're not in early editions, where they had 1d4 of a hit die lmao
You have fundamentally misunderstood D&D as a collaborative effort on the part of all involved.
we didn't say that they have no part in how the world plays out, we're saying that a funny answer for an ultimate creator is the DM since his main job to build the world and bring it to life
And if the players all walk out on you, you can't continue even if you wanted to.
Im not saying the DM is above the players, yk what there's no point in speaking with you guys on this, it's obvious you don't get the point
True tho
Either way, I think i can round out the party with a Warlock. Rune Knight Fighter is confirmed, Paladin is implied
I'll say this again like I did last time to someone else.
I understood your point. It's a bad point.
Anyone got some suggestions to consider for 2024 Warlock builds and why they work?
yeah what we're saying is that a funny answer for 'so who actually made everything in dnd' is the DM. It's not more complicated then that, so stop trying to overanalyse it.
sounds like you'll have a very brawly party, cleric or warlock will work better than sorcerer
It's not true and not funny.
archfey warlock, you'll be the controller of the party and rely mostly on just avoiding combat while using like hypnotic pattern and misty step
didn't know i was speaking to the fun police here lol, just because you don't find something funny doesn't mean it's not funny, humor is completely objective
just be a pact of the tome fellow and get lots of rituals with the ascendant tome invocation, you'll be great utility for the party
We talking spells?
and we weren't trying to say it was an actual thing or an explanation, it's called a joke. look it up, Socrates.
Sure didn't seem like a joke, to me.
dangit, now I wanna play an archfey warlock
you can't just say 'well it didn't look like a joke' to justify you acting like a prick about this lol
Especially with how John was defending it.
Just give up on it, some people in this server are going to shut down other people's opinions because "that's not how I play"
This is just gonna end up with both of you getting warned or something
if you weren't sure if it were a joke or not then why didn't you just ask us 'is this a joke' before critisizing it lmao
Warlock was the idea
But probably not archfey. Second least preferred class after elves
not even how he plays, he's just looking for things to complain about to seem smart to everyone else
Because it's obvious John isn't joking, to me.
well, that only leaves 3 other subclasses
And I'm not complaining. I'm saying that the idea that the dm is in charge and is 'god' is a bad and toxic idea.
I know I have sure Seen the Dm is the god vibe go down some very toxic paths
Since when is 'Elf' a class?
celestial is cool flavor wise, though the abilities are pretty meh. Fiend is just a traditional blaster if you want that, and GOO is cool for doing other util stuff
and if he isn't joking then why is it your problem? dnd is intentionally left to be very customisable, if you want to excuse the DM as being an ultimate diety in-game let him
1981
Basic set had elf and dwarf as classes
yeah but it really depends on your party and if they're cool with it
and halfling i believe
that.. is complaining though
saying that an idea doesn't make sense is complaining that it doesn't make sense..
....oh. If you say so, Elrond
I'm not saying it doesn't make sense. Please reread.
I'm saying it is bad and wrong.
apply the argument to you saying it's bad and wrong then.
It would probably be more beneficial for people to elaborate on what they mean when they say "the DM is god", because there's the "genuine" view of it that is often toxic and there's the colloquial view of it that's meant to be more comedic.
I wonder how wyvern poison tastes
I think it tastes like poison
yeah this was meant to be a joke anyway and people just read into it too much
we weren't trying to propose it as an actual game idea, so you don't need to point it out as being a bad idea
in other words, save your thoughts for something that isn't a jolke azerick.
Very spicy
Though, for a real answer, wouldn't a creature evolve for its poison to have "no taste"?
You typically don't want people you poison to know they've been poisoned
Except when I did, you both defended it.
aren't a LOT of poisons tasteless?
The way I was trying to say is that the DM manages all of the beings in the D&D world and dictates how most of them act in response to player actions, I don’t remember saying “DM has full control and can tell the players to do whatever they want”
THANK YOU, cat lover
I guess you just... Echo'ed my words, eh?
Like fort saves and attribute damage
YOU'RE welcome
also I didn't see you say the same thing srry
It's wordplay baby, but no worries here
I noticed that it was wordplay
DM has full control over the world setting other than the PC’s and how they change it
No, they’re Echo. Who’s Welcome?
Actually, my legal name is Echo W. Echo
So, what spells should I consider as Warlock? Eldritch Blast will not be mentioned, as I'm obviously taking it
insert gif of someone jumping from a bridge here
So DM is above all in their world, they aren’t above the game itself
I keep thinking about spells
What about 'em?
Hex maybe
I like to think that the ultimate diety is a god of stories who manipulates the fates of people for his/her amusement
Ever had the power to pick whatever spell from any spell list in game before, because your dm allows it
Hmmm... I want to ask about that. Are ability checks from the opponent really that useful?
Ultimate deity is IRL fate leading you to a good table
I have mirror image on my bard for the sole purpose of flavor, I get to insult the enemy 4 times (though it won't affect anything mechanically)
I have spent a solid 4 months to find a table lmfao
Weirdly enough my Changeling Bard has a lot of illusion spells
It’s just really about the damage, but yeah it can help with grapples. That’s about it.
I have nothing currently, Wild West campaign starts in a week
WILD WEST CAMPAIGN!?
Yup, I feel I am in a predicament
Sounds awesome, so, firearms included?
I wanna run a wild west campagin :(((
Firearms included
I think my only hope of getting firearms is to possibly use an artificer
I’m starting with a double barrel shotgun baby
Why
-# dunno why people think firearms are that odd in fantasy settings.
I'd just make arthur morgan my PC lol
Why a double barrel shotgun?
Why not?
My character has weave sickness so…
shotguns were popular in the wild west
DM said we start with revolvers and I said “Can I roll for a different type of gun?”
Ammunition capacity, and the reloading takes a good time, if I remember correctly
But cool
The mass production of death wands.
I think it's also on the lower range side? Don't quote me on that though
And? Magic already exists.
I will be grinding for that explosive ammo bro
I’m surprised guns are in D&D now
Also, muskets are in dnd. They reload as fast as crossbows in this game.
They are not in any means realistic
It usually isn't
But why?
I am going to blow a hole through someone’s house in this campaign
Oh, then by all means, use shotguns
It's straight up in the phb now.
Must be new I think
Love how gith used to be able to fire 6 musket shots in 6 seconds
They have been for 40 years
Interesting
blow someone away with the shotgun and just laugh maniacally
if they githyanki got their hands on firearms they would be terrifying lmao
Aww Tim Kask died.
In 1976 Kask edited the final three supplementary rules booklets for the original D&D rules: Eldritch Wizardry, Gods, Demi-gods & Heroes, and Swords & Spells.
He also created Dragon Magazine
He was also the Original Kwalish
January 14, 1949 – December 30, 2025
aww 🙁
Oh my bad, I misinterpreted an old text from my one-shot DM, told me that firearms weren't allowed at "any tables" Which I guess meant the tables he was hosting
Most of them are allready super powerful without them
The old paper cartridges, I reckon.
At least knock first
I'm surprised they haven't discovered guns despite being all over the multiverse lol
Get more bang for your buck
Gonna name my shotgun “Polite Knock”
Some of them do for sure, it's just not a huge part of their lore
yeah, plus I can probably see vlaakith denouncing firearms for being too easy to use
huh
speculating on if the githyanki got their hands on guns
why would she get rid of a way of making it easier to kill their enemies?
Yall ever hit genuine flow state in D&D and picked all the perfect decisions in combat
nope
"These guns take longer to reload and do a 1/5 of the damage our swords do? Why do we need it?" Vlaakith probably
Yes
idrk, it seems like a very vlaakith thing to do. Also for them to work harder because with an easy meathod like guns her people might become worse warriors or something for it.
this would make more sense
Flow state genuinely feels like that one Sherlock Holmes movie where he calculates everything
Until your teammate decides to cast fireball and ruin your entire plan
when you're absolutely cooking someone as fighter and you hear someone say 'I cast fireball on [enemy you're fighting]'
using Daylight against vampires and standing in a perfectly picked spot to command the entire encounter area
"Well we can shoot them from far away?"
"You ride dragons, can teleport, cast spells, and can move things quickly to yourself with psionics. What long range targets do you care about?"- Vlaakith probably
“I could get their entire band of bandits, but I would have to hit my paladin…”
also a mind flayer would probably just slow the bullets down like neo lol
“You have to crack a few eggs to make a good omelette”
'making the mother of all omlettes here jack, can't fret over every egg'
Tsunami spell TM
iunno, I feel like maybe senator nanobots made some good points
Anyway the Githyanki actively do better with what they have than with guns
Like it would be a nerf for them if anything
'with all due respect my queen, it would be a much more efficient way to dispose of-'
'I don't care it makes my soldiers lose aura' -vlakkith probably
You wanna buff the Githyanki, remove Vlaakith
I mean isn't that just the githzerai
Considering an automatic rifle only does 2d8 while their swords do 5d6+str mod+3 I think thats a lot more efficient.
eh I was making a joke don't take it too seriously
"We made grenades!"
"You can cast Fireball."
Grenades don't take decades of study to throw
I can imagine a discussion about the githyanki using guns ending with vlaakith wishing someone to end
Githyankis arming themselves with antimatter rifle
Yeah and the Githyanki are outside of Time so it really doesn't matter. Also they need bullets to craft and maintenance for the gun to even work properly.
and as I bought up earlier the mind flayers would probably just slow the bullets down like neo
"How will we get past these bullets!" The humble wind wall spell:
question
Answer
so mind flayers are controlled by elder brains but are they led by higher-rank mind flayers? like is there a 'mind flayer elite' of sorts?
Hiii!
oh right! do you know which sourcebook they're in
hi!
I believe Volo’s Guide to Monsters? Maybe got reprinted in Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes
I have a question for yall do you refer to your dungeon master as the DM or GM?
lemme check MotM
I say DM
Dungeonmaster, because the dungeons are the high points in my games
@uncut zenith they ARE in MOTM!
GM. I don't like thinking about Direct Messaging
Also fun fact: Ulitharids are the ones who eventually become elder brains
lol
yeah I just read that in their description lmao
also don't the githyanki look so alien because of how long they've been experimented on for?
Guys I have a quick question I'm new
shoot
The original form of their species, if they even had one, is not known
I'm currently using the site and I just built my character but have no idea how to play
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
And ask those type of questions in #dnd-newcomers , the folks there will help. Just for future reference
Bet
😭 why did it have to end soo soon 😭
guys wheee can i get stranger things player manual 🙁 i want it so i can play with my frineds
Im new to dnd and have only played a few session, does anyone have room for an extra online player? I'll play any class.
u can try looking in #looking-for-players
#looking-for-players is a place to look
im sure there is atleast someone who would like you to join
Thanks guys!
no problem have a great adventure!
I will!
um anyone here?
is this server full of europeans or what lol
cuz im from eu and its 4:30 in the morning so i get it why they sleeping
gn
Because sleep is good.
But also not really D&D related.
Sometimes the D&D chat can just go silent for like 10 minutes, it starts back up usually when someone brings up something D&D related, like the most useful spell irl
I’d say mending
Would be great for a repair business
Very good spell
Gng watching the last episode of ST really hit me hard as truck.
Can’t wait for the inflow of ST fans that want to play D&D after the ending
New players are always nice
Good storytelling is always a joy
I can't believe it's over. 8 whole damn years
Happy New Years guys!
Thanks I guess I cried tho
i was just talking about it
bruh its almost 5am
LOL i got hit harder than a belt
hah
did u see the player manual in the end
Nice i live in est time so its 10 pm rn the ending of it where all the kids from where vecna picked up playing dnd WAS AWESOME
Yeah shi was AWESOME I NEED ONE ASAP
not released yet 🙁
frr and mike there standing awh
ok i gtg sleep i need to make a spell book and a story tomorrow so i can pass trough generations lol
Frrrrr i hope they make a spinoff with all the main characters
lol aight j
Imma cry in my sleep tn this is the last episode 8 GODDAMN YEARS COME TO A END
lol
whats the name of the santa claus that bringed stuff to wsqk
Augh i wish a had a friend group similar
its too late and i cant think aaghh my brain turned off

bald eagle?
RAGH WHY CANT I REMEMBER
lol
😂 good night
Gn man imma see if i can draw the mindflayer before new years
I’m so happy that a show I grew up with was absolutely ruined !!
Ah which show
I’m going to be so fr I joined for the emojis and guild tag,, should I start?
Stranger Things 😭😭
How was it ruined
Lots of stuff to learn but it’s never too late to start
Exactly that's the best mentality
Honestly even a beginner has a spot at the table
I usually have beginners run the notes
Its a way to get them the most info
The writing in the last season is atrocious, they forgot the qualities and personalities of their own characters, and it doesn’t feel like the 80s at all. It doesn’t help that obviously a lot had to be cut out, but there were a lot of replaceable scenes. I’m not going to be explicit as I don’t want to spoil.
I need some advice on my character
There's a channel for that. #character-discussion , I believe.
I don't see why not
It's a fun game with lots of cool history
İdk gng I thought it was peak the last episode ngl
I had a few issues with the last season but it's fine overall imo
Didn't like that they didn't do the homework that sorcerer didn't exist in their time for dnd from my understanding
Anyone else just finish the stranger things finale?
Yes I did
GOT season 8 level disappointment
What tools would someone need to fix a balista? Maybe blacksmiths or tinkerers tools?
carpenters
Yeah sounds about right
Depends on what part of the balista is broke
I think all three could work honestly
I thought it was good just they tried too hard to make everyone so sad but knew what’ the outcome would be
Eh? Depends the ballista can be made of alot of metal parts or machinery
That's also a good point lol trying to find an out in the next session. I want my players to be able to fix a balista if they can sneak through this ship without attracting the dungeon boss's attention
there mostly wood from what i have seen
But I gotta make sure they don't do it before they go in or it's not a reward so ima casually put the tools they'd need in the crew quarters of the ship
the important parts that are hard to replace are probably made of metal tho
it really depends on what part broke
Yeah which will give me an out lol if they HAVE carpenters tools I can make it require blacksmith tools
Basically if they can sneak through the dungeon they get some time before the dungeon bosss shows up to fix the balista which will help them in the fight
I'd let them use any of blacksmith, carpenters, or tinker tools.
Ima pick the one they don't have and put the tools the need as loot in the dungeon
Why deny them the ability to use something they invested in?
Yeah I see your point
Ahh, making it a mini quest?
Mini quests are also good, maybe let them use whatever tool they have, but day they need a special part that's somewhere else..
Make it a mini quest but even if they don't find the proper tools I'd say they can still fix it just make it a harder check
i'd probably make it some kind of out of combat montage that takes a variety of skills / tool proficiencies
Yeah so basically they arrive on this ship and they have to go to the lowest deck to find an artifact and destroy it to stop undead from reanimating. But at anytime a couple of harpies can show up and cause them trouble
Skill Challenges are also great.
But if they manage to make it through the ship and back to the top deck before the harpy arrives they get some time to fix the ballista and shoot her out of the sky
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🎆🎇🎇🎆🎆🎆💥💥💥💥💥🎇🎇🎇🎆🎆🎆🎆🎆🎆🎇🎇🎇🎇💥💥💥💥💥💥
I have never played a sorcerer or a wizard what is the difference disadvantages or advantages of each
sorcerers get interesting class abilities that shape their spellcasting, but get less spells known, like waaaaaaaaaay less, so you'll be casting the same 2-5 spells your entire career.
wizards get way more spells known but have to try and divine what spells they'll need because they gotta prepare them ahead of time.
In general Sorcerers are better at bringing the boom and doing high amounts of damage while wizards are better at dealing with a variety of problems.
exceptions exist ofc, as always
do sorcerers have trouble being versatile because of only a limited amount of spells?
yeah, generally. The problem tends to go away as you level tho
what do you mean does the spells get stronger
Certain metamagic is insane from the getgo and stays that way so it gets stronger as spells do
wait so which one is stronger is the only difference flexability?
and how they got the magic to begin with
Wizards are more versatile where as Sorcerers are more specialized
is grim hallowe third party?
yes
Yee wizards are good all around casters while sorcerers are more either damage or buff
Question-
What is your best/favorite "What class should you play" video, quiz or chart?
Rolling a d12
Im curious is 1d8+3d6+2d4 at level 5 character per hit an okay standard?
That does take a 3rd level spell slot (2d4), concentration, and a subclass resource (3d6 Resource total: 4 hits).
Burning all your resources is going nova, not the standard
Fair should compare it to other nova and see how it stacks up
Yes no way wizards of coast would make the grudgel race legal.
Opportunity attack when someone gets in melee with you... with martial or warcaster thats nutty
That also includes a cantrip from any class... so grudgel gets eldritch blast along with free opportunity attacks
whats that?
Wizard have variety
Sorc have adaptability
Warlock have power
Or is what i understand
HAPPY NEW YORK
wait huh
Happy new years
oh🥹
Warlock has good bit of cantrip power
Yep, warlock have many things to adapt or flavor a fantasy
Yep I play warlocks they're fub
The pacts and invocations
Fun I play pact of tome
I didnt had the chance yet, i Will maybe play a wizard
Happy new years yall
happy new year
Happy new years for all EST peoples
Happy New Year East Coast!
Also I am new here and I am interested in learning D&D
I am reading the learn-to-play channel and the websites provided
hold up
lemme guess your background....hm....is it sage?
Sorry I’m a little intoxicated but I still wanna we wish you a happy new year before I forget.
Wuff
Still processing ST finale
But also wanting to start a new campaign with my friend at the start of the new year
happy new year
Happy new year from EST
sadly i still have to wait 3 hours
fun fact: I only started playing DnD after my dad (who played dnd) died…whoops sorry dad
New years new campaigns
Happy New Year everyone!
how do yall feel about playing dnd wothout grids or minis
Grids are easy to make btw
But if forced I could forgo all of that and it would still be quite enjoyable
Grids for me at least is helpfully with tell me how much space is between the players and the npcs
Yes
Without the ruler and stuff that everyone can see depending on what u use
Depends greatly on the dm if there are minis or not
I played for half of my campaign without them. I just used some chess pieces
Ooo that's a good idea
I just finished making my character who is
a high-elf aasimar divine soul sorcerer with the lucky origin feat, noble background and 8th cousin twice removed of the Emperor
Now the thing is - My DM wants me come up with a valid reason for this character being a trust fund nepo baby if they are to be an aasimar and I was thinking Tymora would have to do something with it but I just can't think of an end means, Cui Bono you know?
and I am not that well versed in forgotten realm God history for Tymora to just put all of the luck of the universe in 1 guy. Can someone with more knowledge of the forgotten realm help me craft a reason
A successful mercenary would have sick drip ngl, they'd be wearing armor and wielding weapons from various lands and cultures
What are we talking about now?
A family that has any relation to Royalty is or was an incredibly rich or important family
Why would that be a reason?
Rich family often have nepobabys
I think the game benefits significantly from grids considering that you need precise measurements
Yes but why would the universe put so much divine energy into 1 person from said family
I am thinking of some sort of divine chosen one narrative
Happy New years yall
Man its strange playing a Warlock-esq class and having so many different spells but so little spell slots.
That’s why I like to cast spells without slots as Warlocks
My PC died in the last session of the year.
Man, that sucks
Your PC as in computer or PC as in character?
They clocked out
is there a limit to how many classes one character can have
not really
Technically, 13, if you’re only talking official ones. 20 if you’ve got some homebrew (max level). But if you’re playing past 20, sky’s the limit.
there's only so many classes
oh my god-
But really, that’s between you and your DM.
13 also you have to meet the Stat Requirements for each class too
wait arent there only 13 classes, how cna you have more then that
homebrew/third party
oh right
Homebrew
is it easier to deal more damage with spells or with weapons
Depends on the weapon but spells probably
No single answer to that. Spells in the long run, but in Tier 1 and 2, martials can keep up pretty well. What level are you playing at?
You are at the mercy of the DM when it comes to how nice the weapon is, DM can't stop you from throwing powerful spells meanwhile
Spells for a short time.
Weapons for all the time
so far im using a level 5 wizard barbarian
What
Well, that’s an interesting combo…
my idea for the guy is that hes this huge powerful beast of a goliath, but he hates how deadly his form is,so he pursues magic in order to harness his emotions
You could do that without the Barb part
i kinda messed up by making him a wizard since i wanted him to be a support spellcaster, heal and protect, but if i put some levels into wiz i can get a feat that lets him heal folks
the thing is,even though his intentions are to heal and protect, hes got a short temper, and a strong sense of justice,so if you push him he flips from one end of the coin to the other
You can be a wizard that has anger issues just fine
yeah but barbarian is just his base
plus it gives him an option if he has no spells left
just rage and swing
Drop the Barb part of your character
If you really want the martial side to it, just make him an angry fighter.
Or if you really want magic from a Barb, Wild Magic
You can’t cast while raging, so you can only ever use one class’ features at a time. So really, you’re only ever a level x wizard or a level y barbarian… Not a level 5 wizard/barb.
i was unfamiliar with that
yeah thats the point,at heart hes a wizard, but when he runs out of options he resorts to his carnal barbaric nature
why not just make a wizard, and have your character look like a literal barbarian, isn't the d&d about imagination a lot of the time to fill avoid these things
because the character started out as a barbarian when i realised what i wanted for him
i mean im not in an actual campaign, just a roleplay server,so ill probably just make a new character if i get into an actual campaign
ohhhh
Oh pft if its not dnd do whatever
im sorry im kinda new with this stuff(also i wanted to multiclass-)
Barb Wizard multiclass makes as much sense as swimming while wearing hiking gear
But uhh since its not dnd you can do whatever you like
It's a bad idea because you can't concentrate to cast most spells while raging
its not really supposed to ''make sense'',it was more about the characters nature for me,i got another character idea in mind but i dont know how well it could be executed mind if i spill it here?
So you would be unable to use any magic while using your barbarian powers
oh no if he rages hes effectively given up on resorting to magic
yeah its just a server based using bots and the systems yadda yadda
From an RP perspective, it sounds awesome. Sort of a Bruce Banner/Hulk situation.
Oh and I hate to be a party pooper as well but if its not dnd it would probably fall under #non-dnd-topics (your character concept I mean)
yeah kinda, which kinda leads to my other character idea, which is a character with split personality disorder, switching either at going unconscious or at the DMs call, with each personality(theres only two) having a different moral alignment and class,or same class but using the powers of the class for different purposes, still rough sketch tho, maybe i should try something a little different then this since its similarto my previous one
it kind of is i got a sheet for him and everything,i just dont use it on a set campaign with a specific dm and other players
I thought you're just using your character in your own rp anyways
Like you're borrowing dnd concepts but not actually playing dnd
in the server theres checks, ive entered and left combat, went on quests and leveled up
Which sounds like a TTRPG, but if Sublime is right and this isn’t dnd, this is the wrong channel
oh mb then
Yeah its basically the same as using Mario the character in a completely different platformer game
But by that point this isn't Mario the game even if its still jumping around
ok moving on then,is the other idea viable then?
My DM is trying to talk me out of having my dead character stay dead.
why would they do that-
He feels bad for killing my character.
did you roll a dice
Death saves?
I assume you’ve already done them
But I’m a forever DM usually. I got so many builds I wanna try! This is my chance at a new one.
No need. Massive damage.
Time for another life!
Whatcha playing next?
Also holy hell what happened
Benedict Tallow started this campaign with no confidence. Through many trials and tribulations, he built up the confidence to stand up to a vampire. He fights for Strahd now.
oh yeah then id feel bad- but hey youre taking it in well
What level were you?
got hit with the hollow purple
how does an illusionist fare in combat,im assuming the aparitions cant attack or deal damage,is it more of a team player to provide distractiosn
Had 4 hp left. Vampire critted on a bit.
Ouch
Looks to be good. Minor illusion as a bonus action is going to lead to some shenanigans, I’m sure. And some illusions are able to do damage. The 2024 Illusionist can cast some of the conjuration spells as illusion spells with some extra benefits. Should be fun.
hell yeah have fun
im kinda new so im afraid of making a character with a class that i dont know what all the class features are but i also dont wanna be basic and boring
I’ve been playing over a decade and never multiclassed once. Basic and boring is just fine.
nono i mean class wise, like using a class with very basic and easy to remember class features,im afraid itll butcher the potential
No class is basic and boring unless you make it so.
Simple does not inherently equal boring
hm true,i might be afraid for no reason
Some say ranger….
One of my favorite characters ever was a champion fighter. RP’ed the heck out of that one. The rules are just a framework to allow the actual game to happen.
yall mind helpin me create a backup character if i actually join a campaign,or is the wiz barbarian still salvatgable, like i wanna experiment but gain..im avafraid
The wizard/barbarian may be salvageable in some way, but it’s likely an advanced playstyle. If you’re new, I’d stick to tried and true. Wouldn’t want you to get frustrated by a complicated build while you’re still learning.
I’d make the char after you join the campaign personally
after?
Barb wiz also sounds like a horrible combo ngl
wont that be mad inconvenient for the crew tho
You could fit the char lore and playstyle better if you know what campaign you’d join
Wild Magic Barb or Bladesinger Wizard, don't go Barb Wizard
Even Eldritch Knight Fighter works nicely here
It’s not like you’d play immediately there’s usually a 1-2 week period for everyone to get ready
I usally give a 2 week period with a S0 in the middle
Might work if you have ongoing spells that don’t require concentration… But that’s not a nut I want to try to crack.
i did looka little into eldritch knight but i remember i did not like it
Why not
It’s just not a good build lol
I don't know about that. No DM is going to tell you the specifics of the Adventure, just so you can build a character against it
Its just sword guy with spells
What exactly is eldritch knight?
But you can you do any build tbh
Fighter that can use some spells
A Fighter that took up some magic
I have a char with 10 ac so Meh
again my way to play him was,be a wizard,if the situation calls abandon wizard and succumb to barbarity
Of the gish classes its the most martial based, more sword swinging than throwing spells
So... what makes it eldritch?
Idk
Its just the name
Dang
cuz my guy doesnt like to fight
You're not dripping in blood because you have blood in your username
I mean you’d know the plot hook and premise? You’d go into a world with a char that might be fully unrelated to the game lol?
And I’m not always correct despite my name having “of Truths”
Dnd is about combat
No, but it was the closest I could find to a shadow paladin of sorts
Magic
Aside from oathbreaker
Anyways no your Barb Wizard cannot be salvage, should not be salvaged
I am the biggest Paladin fan. My band is accurate
I don't know what you mean. I was talking to the other person who said to build a character after you were told what it's about.
I don't want to think about how you'd be griefing your team when that time comes
if i look for a campaign here,is every campaign like in a certain pattern or is each one different, like in terms of dates amount of engagement etc etc
Ha! I had so many people argue against that with me.
