yes
Roll 4d6 and drop the lowest
Bro...how..what?!
i wonder what youll be up to at like.. level 10
monkeys paw?
Sounds like your dm needs to slap the universe reset button and not give level 2 adventurers a way to use wishes
idk, maybe they're both competitive
i mean it was funny?
imo this is a problem that can simply be rollplayed out of
also one of the players wasnt there that day so when they come back well toast
Ehhh, I think Orcus would focus on the living individuals first then deal with Vecna...
You .. play in real time and don't time skip at all?
power of a monkeys paw caused it so like umm they kinda had to it was in my wish for a something to come kill him for me
there are more system breaking wishes then summoning a god
"would my character know how to scar a vampire?" "hmm... roll a history check, with disadvantage since you'd be trying to remember any little tidbit of folklore and mythology from your lifetime." rolls "okay, i got a 6." "no matter how hard you try, you can't recall hearing what would scar a vampire. you'll have to find someone that might know."
Dms can also just.. disallow wishes, you know
real time 1:1? no, thats unsustainable. We skip over rests, and other long activitys, but there isnt any time skips that we dont know whats going on between then and now
uhhh i rolled a nat 1
i was orginally gonna make vecna the most powerful being in existence but my DM warned me we would all die didnt say no though
yep, this is probably how itd go
Maybe your dm should learn how to say no š
he said no to somethings aka no consequences to wishes since you made it to air tight
"you seem to misremember a few tales and somehow got vampires and xvarts mixed up."
"Although all of them are from the minstrel Volo"
fun first time in DND got on the hitlist of 2 gods and summoned vecna
"Not sure how much was legitimate in the first place"
at level 2? what even next then
Good thing to put in your DnD Curriculum
"yeah, at lvl 2 i summoned Vecna and Orcus for accident"
Just be prepared for your conces will be quenced!
Maybe
i have no clue my friends are stuck in a void and am alone in a barren wasteland with multiple gods hating me
but i did get a magical sapphire sword!
honestly, justified.
hey i resurected one of them with a wish
So there's still plenty of the life and experience of the world that your character has that you don't. Not to mention there being your childhood education that you didn't personally okay. Point is, your character certainly has a more holistic base of knowledge of the world they live in than you a the player do.
Not even Saul goodman or phoenix can defend you of this one buddy.
you telling me saul goodman wouldnt defend me on this?
am doomed arent i?
Yes, in scale of 1 to 10, you are at 1000.
I never denied this, but none of it would pertain to scarring a vampire.
also he had to throw out his entire campaign plan
that is your character's new short term personal quest.
Gonna level with you...
It feels like you're arguing just for the sake of argument at this point
idk what was your idea but its harder to do it at purpose than accident what you did there.
yeah some how i accidently summoned vecna and got on 2 gods hitlist and got my friends suck in a void
Im just replying to people..? im confused, i am not starting any arguments, neither is anyone else
i hope you get out of it all, because i have no idea how you can
am level 2
No, I mean like..
It feels like your point ls are making sense as to why your character knows something, but you're like "Yeah, I know all of this, just not how to scar a vampire" and I feel like there's many reasons as to why it wouldn't make sense for your character to not know ANY of this
Just like... talk to your dm about it, it's the easiest solution
Bro is a living Improbability Drive from Madness combat.
funny enough am just a bald chef to
Iām genuinely impressed on how yall got into this situation
my DM gave me a monkeys paw
Time to fight Xanathar as a level 1 npc
am a bald chef with a family will my family be okay?
it's like giving a thermonuclear device to a child
IT WAS MY FIRST TIME!!!!
You arent homer simpson and almost made a whole world war 3 in his first day
am playing neutral to
He's definitely Homer Simpson
Neutral to what?! to life? to the balance of the universe?
i dont know i think am gonna be forced to change it to chaotic
dont get me wrong, im loving all that. Is the biggest seed of chaos i had seen in my life
"i feel no strong opinions either way"
i should of just asked for a charles lee ray liked my original plan was
I innately know about my weaknesses and strengths, due to natural aversion to those things.
I know about history of vampires, how one acquires spawn, and a few other things because i as a player made sure to ask and write down those things when i was in contact with a vampire.
Now, i am not in contact with any vampires, and i have never asked those questions, so i wouldnt know. Asking my DM "how would i scar a vampire" will not get me anywhere, because id have to try to find out. I came here to se if there was official ruling (there isnt) and to see if there are any suggestions as to what might work (there were many, that of which i have noted down)
I am not trying to cause problems, i am simplky replying to people who reply to me, sorry
im more scared that your dm didnt do nothing to stop you, he didnt adviced you or smt?
talk with you in private so you dont like, nuke everything x10 times?
nope he just let me do it
some how no one just vecna died in this whole ordeal
i lowkey like the dm's sollution, gives him an opportunity to introduce long term baddies early and give them personality
he had to throw out the entire campaign plan
Yes, i get that and if he make the whole campaign about how to fix that problem i would understand it. But again it seems it isnt the scenario
plans are useless, planning is indispensable
he threw out every plot point
Nothing would prepare you for such thing.
the dm should brided him or added a character that would stopped him out of nowhere
"Ah, after 10,000 years I'm free!" "TBone, Vecna's escaped! Recruit a team of level 2's with attitude!" shreds on the electric guitar
i summoned orcus and vecna on the ground of another god causing 2 gods to wanna kill me
asked like excuse "can we have a lil break, i need to go to the bathroom"
Made a token out of any idk, priest or smt like that and made him stop such act
or made GOD intervention or smt
THERE WAS 2 GODS THERE ALREADY!
and a third god would have made it more awkward or something?
"With attitude" is killing me
yeah orcus and a orginal god made by my DM is enough
funny enough last campaign i was saying if i met a lich i was gonna seduce them
you know what, fish react this guy.
tonight on divine family feud
seduce orcus
i mean i did specify that he couldnt harm us
welp, if the dm manage to flip all that and make it into a campaign about fixxing your mistake, good
If not, considerate taking less...."extreme" actions
in further sessions.
monkey paw the dm's monkey paw
forgot to mention i ate the monkeys paw after using my last wish
good thinking
God this is like being a nuclear engineer and having for first experience Chernobyl.
i took 6 points of fire damage
roll a constitution saving throw with disadvantage, because monkeys are notorious for not being very clean.
nah its chill
it should had to killed you at that point.
i had 9 hp left
What?
yeah, kinda expected, lvl 2 hp is low
well i use to have 12
dude ate the monkey's paw
Monkies are pretty clean from my understanding, they literally have times of day where they group up to clean eachother, yes, they're wild animals, but give them SOME credit š
i was hungry?
i stand corrected.
but damn monkeys paws taste like chicken
its been so long since i was this low level. my hp is 120 right now
when you were what ever your level is right now did you summon vecna and orcus on another gods property?
no, we havent interacted with any Gods, you really shouldnt be even at my level
also one of the players wasnt there today so thats gonna end well right?
You can interact with God's at any level, it doesn't always have to be life or death, just don't MESS with them
i messed with 2
this is more of what i meant, shouldve worded better
then it will end poorly for you.
Demon Lord's are also notoriously petty as well, you may have specified that HE can't harm you, but you didn't mention his followers or fellow demons.. hmm?
it was cursed though
yeah somehow the DM specified his followers couldnt hurt me either luckily since he used over 2000 dead people to kill vecna
bro....if 10 lightnings struck you in hte next session and kill everyone in the party for start a new one, justified.
I wouldn't have given that for free as a DM, admittedly, since YOU didn't specify his followers, feels like it takes away too much consequences
Just a take, of course, not that your dm did anything wrong
techinly i only wished for one things word for word "a being as strong as vecna to defeat him and not able to harm us in anyway" I DIDNT ASK FOR A GOD I SAID SOMEONE AS STRONG AS VECNA EQUAL!
honestly, he gave one of the most dangerous items to a new player.
its like giving a wish ring to an evil character
good news that the gods are only mad at me not my party!
funny enough the gods dont know my party exists
I had a level 2 rogue with unsupervised access to a Deck of Many Things overnight.
On the whole "supernatural creature follows through on the letter of the agreement while breaking the spirit", I had a monster who had been locked up under a town convince the PCs to free him by swearing he would "take no revenge, simply walk back home". He did. He walked back home in a straight line. Flattening just about everything in his path and smashing the city walls
It neither wrecked the game, nor did I have to roll up a new character...
well turned the story upside down BUT no new characters yet
That's why you're my favorite fiend
I stll wonder what that one dm is gonna message me back if I can join their camapign or not
Oh, the DM had to make a new character, as my rogue scored herself a Knight.
i should of asked the monkeys paw to travels us back intime to the when we were in the burnt down village
that or I got ghosted for the 3rd time in my life time
How long has it been. I only messaged some folks back today, and it had been four days. I'm slow like that and wasn't sure the folks I picked were going to be okay.
am gonna take a shower dont summon vecna and orcus without me!
Summons Gruumsh instead
Nah this was with a different dm, I had to do a voice call and explain stuff to them. I remember them going "ill message you if your in or not in to join my server". and I never got an answer back
That's unfortunate.
Idk if I got ghosted or the dm got so busy, they forgot to tell me if i was allowed to join their game.
ether way I aint mad at the dm, I am just confused
Well after looking back at older movies. I've gotta say that the movie 9's given me ideas for monsters
it can be one, it can be another, until talking with him. I would give the doubt benefit
such like?
It gave me the idea to update one of my lesser bbegs (an elder brain) to make it where it creates abominations with scraps or whatever it can find and meld together
like, improvised flesh golems and stuff like that for minions?
planning to use any big creature dead to make an undead giant?
or fuse some of them and do like the Tank from Fear & Hunger 2
havent thought too far, just considering of potential chimeras
Why waste perfectly good resources after all
Indeed. I'm sure all those humanoid corpses could serve a purpose even without brains
Not for regular illithids. that's magic and generally speaking the colony's despise actual magic
humanoid, animals, dragons, etc. etc.
they were likely referencing making undead. non humanoids generally cant be animated with 5e's overly restricted necromancy
"the party successfully defeated the dragon"
Roll for initiative again, round 2 is starting
I mean they could always frankenstein it using heavy amounts of science to reconnect nerve endings and possibly use brains that weren't usable for consumption
all sentient brains can be consumed either by the illithids, the Brain dogs, or the oblex
they prefer mind controlled living thralls typically speaking
deviant mind flayers already using magic are more likely to utilize animated undead
that does give me a thought, perhaps to be pure evil it kept things alive for grafting and experimentation
they do freaky experiments now and then yes but its not quite that common
Myconids can make zombie servants without magic. Hmm, do Myconids have brains?
How would Mind Flayer and Myconid physiology interact?
they're mushrooms. no brains at all. mechanically they could be mind controlled but the psionoc dynamic lore wose likely isnt great or enjoyable for the illithids. they actually have a near pact bond with their thralls (mind slaves) and become upset when they lose thralls
Myconids are fungal life. While they probably have something like a nervous system, I doubt it resembles the brains found in the animal kingdom. Most likely it does not feed an illithid properly
Spore telepathy vs psionic telepathy .. are they different wavelengths? Would one interfere with the other?
radio waves dont actually really interfere with each other because they're separate frequencies so likely the same
Myconid rapport spores seem to grant telepathy, probably just no effect if the target already has telepathy, I guess.
Ceremorphosis probably doesn't work on Myconids, either.
Evil experiment idea, have a myconid infest and reanimate a mind flayer tadpole and then have it try to change a humanoid. Spore Flayer?
find someway to insert a slaad tadpole into there for maximum fun
Why +1 arrows or ammo is too hard to get?
and why cant be made (at least by artificers)?
ask your DM?
hi!
Short answer: because 5e really, really wants to avoid item micromanagement and āmandatory math,ā and +1 ammo messes with both.
These theatre kids keep taking away my numbers game and adding roleplayš”
Oh man I had a quiver full of plus 3 arrows on a viscous bow once upon a time. That was epic
I guess you could say it's a vicious combo
Excellent
combat took too long today
If i'm giving out treasure I'm giving out treasure that matters and +1 ammo doesn't really count.
Give your players a free cast of wish and monkey paw the hell out of it
Nah running wish raw is fine
I give out a bunch of wishes, usually through the deck of many things
I completely agree with this. However think of the hilarious outcomes
When you give out wishes the players just hoard them for a whole campaign like the elixirs in final fantasy
I hate when people do this with spell slots
Lol are you on twitch
Like geez they come back on a long rest you don't lose it forever use the damn spell
I haven't streamed in a while, but I have streamed 3 whole campaigns, they are on my YouTube channel too
hardcore tomb of annihilation? sounds interesting
It seems I DM you
hot take i dont think the tarrasuque dervese the spot of cr 30
Reasoning would be appreciated
comparing it to other things that are up there in that cr level such as sul ketesh both of the aspects and stuff like not to mention most of its attack are phys damage
Yah that was super fun
I mean its whole thing is that its a big wall effectively
Cr is fairly vibes based past about cr 15 or so
Its ac is higher, its hp is higher, its number of attacks is higher, and the consuming ba is pretty strong as well
I do think it's weird that the strongest creature in dungeons and dragons is neither a dungeon or a dragon
I mean the quasar dragon is technically the strongest
(assuming mm only)
The tarrasque has actually been a dungeon a few times
Oh mm yeah ignore quasar in that case
quasar dragon? whats that from?
I think there's a channel for that.
#character-discussion maybe
Does anyone know if the abjuration wizard's ward can trigger armor of agythas? Since it is not temp hp and takes damage for you...?
I mean, seems rather goofy to have the barrier then agythas especially since agythas is an abjuration. Now I just need to find some obscure feat that allows that spell because that dip would be memey
damn.. but still, too much problems for just +1 damage per arrow
Anyone have time to read this? #1029842470810439810 message
š« i failed to get any thoughts on this in the strahd channelā¦
Its an April fools joke that was technically published but it was meant to be a monster thats effectively unkillable and unsurvivable, its size was large enough to dwarf and swallow planets and it has a burp that does like 1000d100 dmg
My character is going to make enspelled armor, do I put in Shield, Armor of Agathys, or Elminsterās Elusion?
Came out in 1985 lol thats funny
What do you want to be able to do
All 3 have benefits
Add some versatility to my armor
Absorb elements can protect you from many kind of spells too and even attacks soooo....
and give you resistance to that element until next round
I mean shield is great for providing some burst armor with minimal action economy impact, Agathys is good for extra hp and damage but requires a fair bit from your action economy, elminster is good for mage slaying but requires conc
Id say elminster is probably the worst due to the conc requirement and it specifying magical effects
Shield is solid for action economy and avoiding damage for a single round
Agathys would probably be my go to choice for being able to be tankier and do more damage
going for something more offensive like helish rebuke is another option
That as well but im going under the assumption that those 3 spells are the only available
Shield
Thatās Evocation and isnāt an option, Abjuration or Illusion
Agathys is a BA, so not too taxing
Oh tru
If i were to choose one, shield of faith may also be a great choice
absorb elements its my go for it
Iām leaning towards Absorb Elements because those can be bad damage, its reaction, and can add damage
yeah and normally in one encounter there is 1 or 2 elements
The item is limited to level 8, not sure whatās the max I will be able to do until I talk to my dm
now if you are going against like, idk, an elemental hydra, pray.
Freedom of movement is an option at lvl 4
no concentration, let you overcome many movement debuffs, etc. etc.
Yeah theres lots of better choices if so
invisibility make you a danger against lots of enemies that dotn have a way to find you
more if you get extra for being sneaky, idk what are you of class
Defensive against lots of attacks that need a target (spells or range attacks), except AoE ones.
can be used to sneak up in some places easier, do sneak attacks, etc. etc.
should a stick (like nightwing's escrima) deal 1d4 or 1d6 damage
d6
You mean a club?
touche
Its just a club with some extra electric dmg
But id prolly say 1d4 bludgeoning and 1d4 lightning
ah sick
First day of pbp and my character already pissed of an injured owlbear
Hopefully you'll put it out of its misery soon.
Does anyone had a session I can join tmmw I'm new to the dnd community and I've already made a character.
what in the scp 096
Touch of Death (1/Day). Melee Attack Roll: +9, reach 5 ft. Hit: 200 Poison damage. This damage ignores Resistance and Immunity to Poison damage and can't be reduced or prevented in any way. If the target is reduced to 0 Hit Points, it automatically fails death saving throws until it finishes a Long Rest
Ok thx
This looks like a monster ability, and maybe a homebrew one at that.
its not homebrew its MOD
Quick question. Where do I put the user id
I don't actually know. I've only ever posted in there to look for players once.
I've never gone looking for a game there... there's no way to search for the specific ruleset I play.'
(that I know of)
What is MOD?
monsters of drakkenheim
Okay so Third Party, which is still kind of homebrew. It's a pretty nasty ability.
What is this, itās horrible
ive been wanting to run this mod for a while but then i just stumble upon stat block like this and it just turns me off from the idea
Does anyone know what to do with the user id
SCP 049
riht
096 is shy guy, 049 is plague doctor
Iād dm a mod or read through all the info channels again.
Don't DM a mod. If you have questions you can use #moderator-support
The looking for channels run by bot command. Instructions are here: #find-a-game
You can reply in the threads of posts you are interested in #looking-for-players
Hello hello, how are we
Howdy people, just joined in here. I teach middle schoolers after school and we have a DND group with the kids. Been having so much fun there I've decided I really wanna try and find a group and get to know more about the game. How is everybody doing tonight?
A response from everybody would be a lot of people
oh goodness gracious I might be able to finally make aoi todo with mark of the sentinel
Just being general lol
Not actually looking for mass responses, of course lol
i used to pray for times like this
I've been out of the DND loop for a bit. Is there any info on the new DND system? Was it called dnd one or something?
I think its just dnd 5e all this time
it's basically just a content patch for 2014
balances, adjustments, it's essentially just the same system but polished
Ahhh, ok. I haven't actually done any of my own campaigns since like 2023, so I'm pretty out of the loop. All I know is that I've been having an absolute blast with all the kids, and I would love to have a group to have that much fun with as well
I absolutely love this character I made for our program campaign, and I'd love to use him in a bit more serious of a setting. The kids are fun, but it's hard to be serious lol
Folks often post about their games in #looking-for-players
If you want to make a post telling perspective dms about yourself you can check out #find-a-game for instructions on using commands to run our template bot
He's an armless Aasimar with 4 permanent greater mage hands (a home brew creation, of course)
His biggest defining feature is that his sorcery/magic is only allowed to him so long as he doesn't hurt others. So he's basically a support focused sorcerer, so I had to steal some spells and concepts from other classes in order to make it work.
Thanks! I appreciate it. I mostly just popped in right now to see what's going on and get to know the community
Damage ignores immunity?
yup
Thats like an only bloodhunter ability....
For one round....
Ive seen monsters ignore resistances. Same with players but not immunities
Oh, can't send pictures here lol
I'm planning on buying a massive lot of 182 dice for the kids in our program. The price is fantastic and it would be a hell of a lot better than the 2 sets of dice we all share lmao
Bloodhunter has one singular thing that has that
Dang, all of these campaigns start too early for me š
Oh well, I kinda expected that lol
I love getting to the point in dnd where fall damage can no longer down you so you just start thinking of hilarious ways to do stuff
I had a Barb PC use gravity to kill an boss. The party was in a tower, and the boss blew a hole in the side and was flying outside the tower, peppering them with spells. The Barb just jumped out the opening and grappled the boss. They both plummeted 100ft, which the Barbarian was basically unscathed from, but the boss was a fresh corpse.
Being totally fine if you fall is peak
10d6 damage was enough?
yeah
10d6, at max is 60HP, and probably way less than that
Had this been a low level game, even at average roll with rage, this would kill the barbarian too until level 2
So i assume the roll wasnt very high, so maybe 30 damage
You made a boss with 30HP?
Actually could have been a little more. 40, 50 if it was a goliath.
However, it says the barbarian was "basically unscathed" which means not only can't the boss have more than twice the barbarian's HP, assuming rage, but also that the barbarian lost at most 20% HP.
That means the barbarian had more than twice the HP of the boss.
What kind of boss was this? A frail caster?
Average damage halved suggests the barbarian had at least 80HP to reach that 20%. So around level 6/7?
The boss dying to 30 fall damage from full health at that level is bizarre, even if it was a caster.
You nailed it. It was a high-intensity, low-HP caster boss. The challenge wasn't supposed to be a slog of chipping away at health, but rather closing the gap before they could nuke the party The barbarian just happened to be the perfect counter-pick for that specific damage type
Hello, Iām new to dnd, but know some of the basics do to a 20 minute video I watched, could someone help me
what forgotten realms species has the best cheffs?
I mean id probably allow that cliff oneshot sometimes but i wouldnt roll 10d6
Id think about height and how well my created npc would fare
Goblins
A boss having 30HP sounds crazy to me though but i bet it works
sounds very squishy
so moldy food or mushrooms that get you high constantly?
only the spiciest of uncooked goat that will somehow taste good
i imagine goblins as the type of being to be the 40k orcs of cooking
they believe the dinner tastes fantastic, and so it shall be
???
I imagine goblins would only spice their food with garbage juice that has been fermenting in the corner for months
spare not waste not, goblins are fantastic environmentalists they leave no trash behind
compare that to the wasteful high fae leaving enchanted treasures littering the grounds after their parties, smh no care for nature them
that village did not meet the standards of the goblin commission on sustainable building design (it was standing upright and not on fire)
I wanna start buying dnd stuff when i get my christmas money, where should I start at?
Dice, then the Playerās Handbook
if you want to run a game, try the new starter set Heroes of the Borderlands
those are just books mind you, you can also go the route of buying minis
Goblins having fae origins, and probably being the originator of the famed Goblin Markets, I imagine their actual traditional food to be an eclectic mix of spices and flavors influenced by them being traveling caravan merchants who trade with different lands and factions in and out of the Feywild.
#dnd-newcomers is a great channel to start for new players and #learn-to-play can also help guide where to learn more about the rules!
Depends on if you want to do irl or online/digital
I want to do it irl one day but I dont know anyone in real life who really into it so I guess online/digital
Feel free to take a squiz over the books in dndbeyond and you can buy any of the books that look interesting (or Alternatively find a group that has content sharing available in their campaigns)
If you live in america I believe you can get the books as part of the digital purchase
I would type into Facebook search bar. Your hometown and dnd
Possibly possibly theres a nerdy page in your backyard that plays in person
First dnd session today :3
Wish me luck
attack the first old woman you see
Whu
don't do this
real life or dnd don't do this
coven propaganda
I hope you make it out alive š
big hag at it again
thats what Iiiim sayin
morning
good mornin!
hope evryone is well š
what are some insane things to do in a city
like after you've sold all your loot at an blacksmith, what's something absurd to do next?
Hey
Gooooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup!
I ran a reverse false hydra yesterday, it was very fun. I love gaslighting players.
DMs should gaslight more.
hi im new to be a dm and i have struggle to make my fighter fell more powerful to be he is lv4 with a greatsword +3 now i have i have a home brew rule if someone hits a nat1 the person can use his reaction to counter strike is this a bad rule or is my fighter complaining to much he said to me that the sorcerer and tempest cleric make so much more damage than him if this is the wrong channel im sorry im kinda new to this server
im imagining every time you cut off a head, 2 decoys grow back?
Why do you think weāre sometimes called GMās? What do you think the G stands for?
Find the bath house
No one calls us GMs, what are you talking about?
(Humorous.)
You have a +3 greatsword and still feel weak? I think smt is up
unironically the first thing my character did (he was massaged by a female dwarf)
Oh, no, it implants false memories and rewrites reality in your mind.
So my thoughts on this
When you run a session do the players even remember the session?
Well it's a reverse false hydra, so yes.
But anyway, that rule isnāt great
And it would be better off in #dm-discussion
Reverse false hydras are jamais vu, where false hydras are deja vu.
Idk what a reverse false hydra. I only know what false hydra is
he needs some ability that requires more dice to roll. A sense of power only comes from the number of dice you roll, not what you add
There are reverse false hydras now? What is that? A normal hydra?
give me a 10d3 then a d3+20
He has a +3 weapon at level 4... without anything else needing to be heard. Hes complaining too much
You get to pick classes for a reason
He wanted to play fighter thats his choice......
Revelation of the day: 7-people combat is the worst. Outworsted only by 8-people combat
- at level 5 is when he will see real power
Well... his real power attacking twice etc
but 7 player puzzle solving is the best
Coming from a DM of 8
Itāsā¦actually I donāt think I need to tell you
Basically. I torment players.
lowkey idk if this is a good idea but perhaps split the group into two and run seperate battles for each?
Hahaha exactly
does that change anything?
Discussed that with the players actually, and they prefer to stick together
It does. I'll try to write an explanation.
you need an npc to do the scooby doo thing of "lets split up gang!"
And social can be great! Just the next time when it will be a combat encounter with almost full party I'll gorge my eyes out. Or start crocheting, my turn won't be here for a long time xD
Nope, they stick together
Whereas the false hydra tends to strip away memories, and things of that nature.
Reverse false hydras add on things and creates things that were never there to begin with.
It'd be like travelling with a party for an entire year, and eventually finding out that your party had died eight years ago.
Dm can put a real timer on the clock
They have been very resistant to splitting
Likely cuz the first time they did it one person got ambushed
ty i fellt like i was doing something wrong
1 min then turn ends etc....
False hydras are weird when you use them to rewrite the players' reality. I'm on the side that agrees that the players should be the ones who put an end to the false hydra when they first meet it.
i am not familiar with hydras but i thought their main thing was heads and not losing them
No there are real problem players and also players that dont take no for a answer
Keep in mind we are not talking about hydras. That's entirely different.
Your bigger mistake was to give a +3 weapon to a level 4 character.
I kind of teeter on them being cheap. Hence why I only ran it for a one shot. I would NOT include false hydras, reversed or not, for a long-term campaign.
They're just too stripping of player agency imo.
+3 weapons at level 4 ? how did that happen
The thing is that 3/7 players are very slow with their turns and really, really don't know their class and options, with DM starting a lecture "how this works" almost every turn, so in actuality its a complex of problems
Its just I won't get to play till mid January and last session was so soul numbing...
They can be interesting... as long as you don't go "oooooh, you guys actually had a cleric friend who's died". In my opinion at least.
Give them some homework
I dont allow silvery barbs at my table... player complains sais he wants to play something else. Then player kept calling me dm nasi cause I wasn't gonna let him do his giant barbarians weight fall damage etc so he could cheese encounters with his 400 already pound self. Large so idk 800. Wouldnt let that go so I had to kick him.... sorry š¬
i was hinda afraid the he would complain even more that his toweak and that the clerik is using 90% of the time only guiding bolt and thunder wave
while waiting for their turn they can decide to do stuff
I understand isnt the same for me a fighter for think for options than lets say, a sorc or monk
"you know all your tragic backstories? actually your parents are perfectly fine actually and they love and appreciate you"
He tried, but obviously not enough. He keeps joking about making them take a quiz but I'm almost ready to prepare that quiz myself xD
Just remember theres a plethora of players. Some cant find schedules that fit your table i get that. But very few dms. Dont let the player bully you to make ya feel bad
Why is he 400 pounds? Better yet, how is he 400 pounds?
My hands moving towards the DM's throat at cartoon levels of speed.
Goliath
Iād have said warforged
"don't you remember when you made that oath of pacifism?!"
yeah i shound alowed that too bcs of my 4 crits i hit 0
I only dont allow it because as a dm my rule is. If you can do it I can do it too. As a dm I dont wanta cast silvery at my players.
At this point other people stopped thinking about fun options just to speed things up. Fighter ignores that he is a wizard multiclass just for fast hits to move on, my artificer behaves like fighter - attack attack bonus action attack, move on, cleric uses the same 2 spells, only bard still has some willpower to think about spell choices xD
Spellcaster damage and martial damage are two different beasts. Spellcasters doing more damage is kinda normal sometimes.
I am slowly proved overtime that Wizards of the Coast knows NOTHING about these sorts of details and kind of just hand waves stuff.
"Yeah uh- big guys are... really heavy, what's a big number? Why not 400?"
(Which is fair, but funny.)
look he just came back from christmas with the fam
Hafthor is 400 pounds
Honestly in order to be a good DM you need to be courageous enough to know when to say no and put your foot down.
If you want them to feel more powerful, add more encounters that force the casters to conserve resources
Thats real life so..... Human btw
Alot of other things to be a good dm too hahaha. But yes that's a quality as well gotta have a backbone
Is that a popular dnd character I don't know?
would it bee to obvius if lets say a druegar is a sorc and has sivery bards š
Hes real life human
I mean you can be a people pleaser instead but that's an excellent way to surround yourself with people who walk all over you.
sorry my character's species is an invertebrate so I don't have that skill set
well than he compailns the combat is too long
How many rounds are occurring per combat?
Hes the fighter?? Its what he does
No what he's actually complaining about is the time it takes to get back to his turn
My ranger is doing the same thing.
he needs to take up knitting or drinking during rounds
I realize I was wrong in my assumption.
And I am now in love with this man. He is awesome.
Never seen game of thrones?
I do not consume mainstream fantasy media movie/tv-wise.
is a fight that takes 2 hours too much
Hes the mountain.
Alright, so if I don't want to eventually switch from DnD meetings to AA meetings, I definitely need to start bringing my crochet with me...
Yes!
Well, depends on how many players
I assume all of your players know that you're a new DM. If so complaining a lot makes him sound like a loser. And if he's not a newbie too that's even worse.
And the stakes
I was in one yesterday, 1 hour 52 minutes against 3 enemies.
It was too long at 1 hour already
5 pcs and 18 npcs
Istg being a wizard costs so much gold
Huh?
18 NPCs?!!
Yeah I see the issue
as someone who regularly has to run sessions under 1 hour, this would kill me
18 hostile NPCs or...?
How on earth lol
that's too many npcs dawg, make them like 2 big crowds
I mean are your turns lightning quick?
yes mosty goblins 7 hp isch and 3 orcs 40 hp
hahaha, yeah
Oh enemies, not ally NPCās
Def try to let the pcs bog down the game. Never your monsters
yea
One of my groups has 6 players, combats usually take 2-3 hours šš
Tho the dm is new
How do I type for looking for players cause Iām a new DM looking for players
I did a one shot silly 8 player game in one of the under one hour sessions by god was it chaotic
The channel has instructions.
./looking
Thx
Without the period.
Combat is inside of that one hour?
/looking-for players
yeah XD i have to be extremely efficient in my actions and make my mobs more squishy
Nothing deadly i presume?
Exploration/rp/combat in one hour... sheesh
typically it's a choose one and then next week do the other
Anyway... I don't know this dude but from the little that I know about him it sounds like he might need to be less argumentative. And if he's actually complaining about stuff with a bad attitude please consider getting rid of him.
"last week you were fighting between two double decker buses, this week the bus has crashed and you need to convince the city guard that you do not deserve a parking fine"
epic
he said he thinks about leaving so yea the problem will solve itsself but ty for the advice
Just don't be afraid to pull the trigger yourself. Some jerks like to manipulate people by saying that they're gonna leave them.
Yes @elfin tiger you do not need to get disrespected even in the slightest. Debate and Discussion is way different then disrespect.
If he's said this then def go ahead and kick him find a new player before he destroys the table
I Have a question
Better just ask it then or else you risk yourself getting ignored.
the table is strong player even askd me if it goes south if i still pull it through and said yes
I have an answer
Still pull it through?
i might be not a smart man but im a man
So I started a D&D club and its been like a month and no one knows how to play except me and its really difficult
Anyway at the end of the day idk this dude. All I can say is that you need to know when to put your foot down. DM's need to have their fun too.
i will look out for new player if he leaves and rest said they stay until the end
Alright
Whatās the question?
How do i make people listen and want to learn
You canāt make people want to learn, unless you make it seem fun or worth their time
They refuse to listen when i tell them something
Make them feel individualised and valued, and build a group off the players that seem to be the most engage
that neat part you dont i was as an apretice i was so lazy until i was like well maybe i should prepare myself for my final exam
print and laminate cheat sheets for them to use to look at some of the basic rules and have online access to their characters to make sure they have prepared spells and ther equipment equiped
I had this back in college. Honestly regret not kicking them out.
@elfin tiger different topic but look^
oh sry
Thank you thatās actually soo smart
If its a problem player and players even see its a problem player just toss em
Thanks guys/gals
Nah you're fine. But if other players are asking you "if this goes south" that means theres drama at that table.
Harvest those good players and bounce the buddy. You'll be happier tomorrow
ah ok
Well... you kinda don't? If you were an English or math teacher this would be a different thing. If people aren't willing to put time and effort into learning how a game works then maybe playing said isn't for them.
Feel free to try out all the fancy methods you have at your disposal. But if things don't just remember my words.
tbf attention spans are shot to all hell nowadays, and the rules are an actual book. I always recommend a dm knows what theyre doing and tell the group the basic rules at the start of a campaign or when a new player joins
Hi all, new to the game so just to provide some context Im currently playing a Twilight Sanctuary Cleric Loxodon Lv 4 currently with my friends. Question I wanted to ask is that i feel as the "healer" of the party, other than providing the occasionational moon beam & heals, i dont really do much. I really want to push my character optimisation to the limit is there any suggestion to advise me on, cause i really want my race to feelll unique and do things not many character can do.
Just show em some subway surfers as you explain the rules with a ai ticktock voice.
hey, the main skill of any performer is to know your audience
Next level you get spirit guardians, which is solid
i love the spirit guardians cha cha, it's so gamey
Also remember that you donāt have to heal allies unless they really need it
What exactly are you looking for? To be known as something else then just "the healer" or wanting more damage output or what? Cause twilight is S tier
as a light cleric, I love being the "she'll be 'ight" cleric to anyone's wounds
You choose arguably the best class and subclass after all
Kind of the curse of being the cleric in the party. Don't have any advice to give you but I can tell you that this is a common issue.
well here is the thing one is comppaing 2nd is chill 3rd and 4th are i refuse to learn my spells the clerik used hit 22 guiding bolts and gave olny one adv to the other players but he is a nice guy and i knda dont want to kick him bcs i would feel bad for it
Exactly im the druid who "can heal" by only prepping aura of vitality and healing word lol.
to be honest, i only chose loxodon twilight cause i read i can fly late game so the idea i can be dumbo is Funny aand awesome to me haha
As long as you "can heal" you'll be alright
No this is great hahahaha
To get that before then... try to get winged boots
Or another form of flying.
someone asked me if i had Spare the Dying preped and I was like "lol no, try not to die :P" but that's mainly bc there was already a twilight cleric in the party that i trusted to be more charitable then I
My Shepherd druid was a beastly healer with aura of vitality. Didn't even plan to make her a healer character. Homegirl didn't even had proficiency in Medicine.
Yeah im definitely not taking that cantrip lol
Well druids are second best healers... so by default and prep is what it is
Shephards are good healers too right? I forgot what they do. I dont play Shephard I dont like summoning lol.
you don't need medicine when you have spells, that's a melee class proficency
I know star druid and wildfire give another 1d8 to healing. Then ya got the moon sickle doing another 1d4. Idk what shepherd brings
Shepard is the orbital bombardment via flying cow class
OOO, is that something i can request from my DM cause i was just figured i just gota play abit more level up to get my flying haha.
I would love to loxodon also as i love to use the my character raises his trunk to smell the "bullshit" but due to my low intel, guillible enough to go through doing evil deed despite my gut feeling sensing otherwise haha
The cleric was also the party's rogue so all of healing was up to me. Still didn't spare the warlock from death.
it's the warlock's patron's job to rescue them from permadeath
Iāve made a fun tavern idea, but not sure where to put it since thereās no applicable channel in college of creation
That was my biggest problem playing moon druid.
Party would look to me while im wildshaped
So aura of vitality became a go to because I got tired of hopping out of wildshape
But I ain't letting no one die hahaha. At least try not to
Well, homeboy wasn't doing his job so I had to do it for him. She paid her price though (I gave the warlock a "makeover").
"Heal your own wounds dude, im a bear rn rawr"
Exactly hahaha Im like... you know how costly it is for me to spend 2 wildshapes to make a gurgling sound? Just for you to die
any warlock patron worth their salt would applaud that action (ragebait is their lovelanguage)
"you are making me waste a spell slot I could've used on fireball for this action, I hate you."
It's revenge for putting me in the middle of a synaptic static while being swarmed by mummies.
Spell can really be lethal
Instantaneous not dispellable
No concentration... can be really bad
She's lucky she's more forgiving than the barbarian. Yes, she did that twice.
She still lost quite a few approval points though.
How awful of a dm would it be to just pop in with bbeg. DC 21 idk. Synaptic static on martial then pop out teleport.
Without bless and a flat 10 intelligence he could never pass that.
Same can be said for player doing it to the bbeg he knows he cant beat lol.
Pop in synaptic static the bbeg who has low int maybe? Idk but its a idea im sure it could work
Hey all
Hey.
I mean, that is how spellcasting works. If the action economy works out then sure
if the BBEG has a +5 spellcasting mod and is of a high enough CR to have a +8 PB, or has some kind of magic items boosting that DC, then that's how the spell works
But why
And also whatās the party level
Saves over 20 need to be used once you get past a certain level. This encourages teamwork
Anyone here is a DM? Looking for a dm to host Curse Of Strahd
Please use our #looking-for-dm to potentially connect with someone.
Instructions on how to post in these channels is in #find-a-game
Been playing bg3 and got 3 to 5 tpks yesterday
i had played darkest dungeon for a lot of time, i had an ammount of TPKS that isnt sane
Sometimes a party got unlucky and faced something they werent ready
Other times the luck wasnt at my side and a character died before i could finish the mission
Loosing characters that have the perfect perks//some trinkets you use a lot feel awful.
it helped me to develop a "resistance" to frustration in some way for lots of situations
No boss just goblins and owlbears, plus one fight with characters at a ruin
and no just balanced mode
The ruin thing was a nasty surprise but is trivalized by either targeting the barrels or sneaking by after passing that initial deception check at the door
Owlbear isn't that bad but you do need to spread out
Phew
Not doing owlbear again after ||beating|| it so I avoided that
Just about all my games are on hold for the holidays so I get a chance to rest and blan
I miss playing dnd online so I play bg3 as cope lol
Plus I have a m4 Mac so Iām not gonna see the good animations
We do have a space for #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers just as an FYI if we are going to keep discussing battle areas/plot
Oh sorry
I am getting a new rules dnd starter set for Xmas so Iāll see if I actually get it wrapped
I possibly get to my Yuan-Ti Alchemist Artificer today š§
I do need to get handbooks
Hey can you guys think up creative spells to use with Nystuls magic aura.
Have confirmation you can change a creatures type to a different one and then cast spells that target that creature type on it.
For instance using Planar Binding on a human by using Nystuls to make them appear as a celestial.
(Some other uses I was going to be using, beast bond, awaken, speak with animals).
Any other interesting combos you could think of out there of spells that usually only target specific kinds of creatures?
Oop going there
yeah planar binding a human sounds hilarious!!
Banishment Magix circle hallow
Nystul's -> Human into Undead -> Turn Undead -> free exp and bonus Lathander affection for deleting undead
But it's an ILLUSION, they're still not really undead, they're just treated like they are.. for 24 hours
Hmmm sounds good on paper... when you realize I am playing a CE necromancer who enslaves monsters and turns anything and everything into undead then maybe me N Lathander might be at odds anyway.
He probably finna be just another person sending clerics and paladins after my head.
Already have a few of those. X.x
Life is an ILLUSION, we exist to feed the gods with our souls
Rage, rage against the heavens for this oppression of mortals!
Seriously, developing faith so we taste better after death is the whole reason they let us live at all.
Nah, Demons and Devils fuel their lives with souls, Deities fuel theirs with Devotion and Faith
OR! And hear me out here. Beat them at their own game and Oppress mortals even better than they did!!!
Oppress the deities instead
I feel like that didn't turn out so well for Karsus
Karsus is actually getting revived in our campaign rn by a rival cult.
We'll do it the
⨠Tokii's Idea
Way
Why not both?
Oppress the deities first so it makes oppressing mortals easier.
Or we could just summon the GOO's and let them consume reality
Tentacles for EVERYONE!
Its on the list
sorry for being out of topic. im dming for my friends, is it op if we dont follow prepared spells?
Yes but can be fine. Lets DM pull out the black book.
I mean, if you'd don't, you have every possible spell prepared for every situation.
I'd say it'd be pretty broken
I hate having to prepare spells. Wizards suck
Black book campaigns are hella crazy.
Sorcerers, Warlocks, Bards and Rangers would be buffed to hell and back with that change
Well, Druids, Clerics, Artificers, Paladins and Rangers all prepare their spells now
Wizards just prepare their spells in the worst way possible š
whats the black book again?
is there anyone here thatāll help me learn about dice š š
PTSD of that time I had a 17 Cleric, 10 Pale Master, 13 Wizard with ONE HUNDRED AND NINE spell slots total that needed choosing..... and only 36 hotbars to put spells on
"I'm gonna buy this spell so I can prepare it later!"
My favorite Cleric I've ever played was my Tiefling War Cleric, Karkas, man felt like a Warlord with how easily he bodied demons and undead, he was also the only frontliner in that party and was only ever downed twice
#dnd-newcomers should be able to
Your DM pulls out creatures and beings a party of your level should NEVER encounter.
Since you are blatantly OP they can use these creatures to limit test you. Even though you are OP you will always be on the verge of a TPK cause DM has no idea what powerful creatures might just be tok strong.
Terrasque Demilich when?
yikes
My players on Thursday at level 3 made a sphinx of Valor really mad
illithid tarrasque when
Cr 17, they ended up de escalating the situation sucessfuly
Illithilich Tarrasque emperyean Iron Golem, when?
illithid tiamat when?
We woke up a Terrasque when the cult trying to revive Karsus flew off in a floating city after almost killing us. Should we be worried?
Illithimat
No, just cast Wish and wish for the terrasque to be another group's problem
why poisons are so... "bad"? like, they arent cheap and their Dcs are giga easy to overcome. Why such thing is like that?
someone in the past spammed a lot of poison, they were giga op before or what?
Okay, the Tarrasque is now your problem in a different campaign, I'll be contacting your other dms to organize this!
Lmao
Yoooo sick!
Well yeah but why are you fighting the cult trying to resurrect Karsus?
He wasn't such a bad guy
He has Sus in his name, so he's instantly Sus! (I'm sorry)
Honestly, I played some characters that would probably try to help the cult trying to resurrect Karsus
Also, folks, please help, I've been playing an Old Man tortle knowledge Cleric in a group and everytime I talk about him someone brings up Gerson from Deltarune š (in other conversations)
here is a bit of a fun question:who is your favorite demon prince?
demogorgon or Miska
Baphomet, hands down.
hell yeah brother!
Weeeellll you see. We were a part of the cult initially. But then stole the book with Karsuses sentience. And now see the cult leaders didnt like that we ran off with their little book. So y'know they hunted us down. Almost killed us, made us decide book or our lives... we decided to give up the book right. But the party member witg karsuses intellect was being changed by him and would die if they lost the book. So they ran away. So we naturally had to hunt down our old party member to kill them and give the book to the big culty guy who Geased us and was fina TPK us if he didnt get his lil book....
Soooo anyway we stalk party member for weeks. Kill her, get his lil book. So we live but he still hates us.
I'm a Minotaur enjoyer, I'm waiting for the day I get to play my Minotaur death cleric of Baphomet
During the time we pissed off some paladins by murdering a TON of people along the way and now we are running from a Night hag who wants us to collect children for her, multiple religious orders, two cities, and the cult guy Still hates us.
Its been a blast!
Damn
Well I would like to offer an alternative solution: Resurrect Karsus yourselves and hope his gratitude gets you something in return
Oh and did I mention the orc army that took over multiple continents along the sword coast we had ro flee from also?
Nevermind
And the terrasque.
I'd love to be in an evil campaign, I've plenty evil character ideas but I like making fellas you wouldn't expect to be evil and just outwardly be chill guys
Hmmmm. We might actually be in trouble now that I think about it?.
Its sooo much fun. We have had a few PVP deaths. It was wild.
A whole side story to those. Long story short dont piss off the group leader. Demons and locked doors are bad for flying races.
Wait, does any of you speak Netherese? Or any of the languages Karsus spoke?
Because I doubt he spoke common. It's been thousands of years
I've done evil party "one shots" (one shot in concept that took multiple sessions to finish).. and think parties have been unwittingly evil or tangentially evil in other games.
He was speaking telepathically through the artifact book while corrupting the mind of its weilder.
Basically he was taking over her body. Eventually she would have died and become karsus.
I mostly like Baphomet because i think the idea of a nature demon is really cool. Kind of sad he doesnt have either of his breath weapons anymore
I'm actually playing a Semi-Evil character now.
Or, well, soon.
My Yuan-Ti Alchemist Artificer, Zhoskavich, his whole thing is wanting to discover a way to harness elementals power to create medicine, even if it leads to the suffering of said elementals
Nice I was running a Harpy necromancer who was becoming undead herself through Hausters mark.
She was a crafter of cursed artifacts and did a lot of ritualistic murders.
He's also a narcissist and loves to make people beg for healing, but otherwise, he's.. decently chill?
He likes making alcohols and will even give them out as gifts, he prides himself on it
Now I am building a necro bard drow Yathrinshee who enslaves monsters and uses undead and monsters to do her dirty work while being a lazy ass hedonist who just wants to live in luxury while other things get their hands dirty.
Haha reminds me of my Cleric of Asmodeus!!!
Perhaps if they met, they'd be good friends
Noble born narcissist who only healed the party for personal gains.
Swapping her out rn actually tho.
A character that is a narcissist healer that only heal and cure lots of diseases and pain in people to brag around about it, its a good person but annoying
Hi!! I had my second session of my dnd campaign! And omg the new player we added was so fun
Wasnt a fan of the noble politics and cult building and necromancy, and eldritch research all together. Was too many things and I was overwhelmed.
Zhoskavich isn't a noble, but he's a Merchant/Artisan very closely in contact with an Elvish noble that buys his wares, he's pretty coincided because as far as he understands, he's the best and only medicine man in the region
So I made the bard to rotate in who has more specific single minded focuses and desires.
So I dont have to manage 50 things all the time.
I actually hated it soooo much. š¤£
Oh she also eats human souls to survive. Otherwise the hungrier she gets the more monsterous she becomes.
Pretty excited to run that whole soul eater trope.
My kindest character is my Harengon Bladesinger, Malaketh Dronnel, he likes to talk casually with his enemies in combat and even compliment them on their skills or, as a competent swordsman, he'll occasionally give them tips if they use weapons
He also always gives gifts as an establishing start to a long lasting bond or friendship.
He's even got a Wyrmling Daughter (drew the dragon card from the deck of many things) and would protect her, as he would with the rest of his party, with his life
He's definitely the "I have no enemies" type
Nice! Only good character I have ever run was a reincarnated child our party killed on accident. She was revived by an eldritch ritual and was slowly becoming aquatic. She eventually had to leave the party to live in the ocean with her people.
Was cool. She was very nice but terrified of the party.
Her and her brother were originally our slaves.
Wild arc, that one.
Well, his only "Enemy" is an undead Dragon Lord called Oroboros, though, that's mostly because his existence and cult poses a direct threat to his daughter
Moat of my characters are good hearted and good natured individuals, but I have a few that are a bit less... appeasing to be around
There is always that one cult ya know?!
Aye, Oroboros' existence is a danger to all dragons because he seeks to convert them into undead evil servants of his will.
God my campaign sounds crazy when I chat about it like this lmao.
4years ongoing will do that I guess.
He sounds like a homie.
Life goals ya know.
Malaketh actually talked to him while fighting him in combat, Tashas Otherworldly Guise made him immune to the undead dragonlords breath attack and half immune to his physical attacks and it was a pretty nice fight...
However, it was only against his ASPECT... not the Deity themselves as theyre still trying to ressurect into a physical body š
ironically rn I've got two campaigns where the parties are fighting dragons rn
Left my daughter with a friendly giant Deity named Diancastra before we decided to had to take the fight to him (Oroboros) this time, last session ended off with us storming his cults "headquarters"
aaay, Diancastra
Yeah, she liked little Slate (what we're calling the wyrmling I got from the deck of many things for now lol) enough to babysit her while we fight Oroboros, she even helped the little lass start her dragon hoard lol (She's a spirit dragon for those curious)
Nooo way!?!?! Fighting dragons? In D&D thats freaking crazy bro what a coincidence!?!?
Lmao

Dungeons... AND Dragons?!
Actually crazy work!!!
One group just got away from a young white shadow dragon, the others getting whooped by a young green one
Today i had session, the party had to do some work.
Investigate an area and get some scrap and materials.
Mostly exploration area and we had a little battle, asked the paladin (he have a cursed sword and let him sacrifice half of his hp for some sort of "blood golem" like fear & Hunger) to dont do that thing he do often.
It lead to make an intervention and force him to drop the greatsword, we are going to have a lil session being an intervention for him.
was funny, i wanted after hte mission research some fire bombs but it seems i will have to do that later
dont rangers have to choose known spells?
isnt it the same for bards?
The biggest buff here is paladin/cleric
i dont know druid so i cant say
Yeah but they can't swap them until they level up
yes but the person never mentioned known spells. just prepared
the level up switch is for known, right? not prepared
Or at least that was my understanding of it, not following prepared spells = you can pick and swap off whatever spell you want
The only casters I truly think it makes sense not to prepare spells are Warlocks and Sorcerers
if you know it
What level?
We bullied two adult black dragons a bit ago and stole their eggs.
the white one was lvl 7, the other is lvl 3
Party I meant
thats what I'm saying
Ah gotcha
Tracking.
Feel like a level 7 party could have taken it.
Catastrophic chain of unfortunate events?
Typical D&D fashion?
Yeah, a young white dragon is cr 6 lol
What were they doing? š¤
What are your classes my goodness?
I just picked up the heroes of the borderlands set and Iām pretty excited for it, anyone else played through it and got any opinions?
it had animated breaths for minions
Bard too yeah?
Iām fighter, ||my party is astarion, wyll, laeāzel, and gale. Told shadowheart to leave|| lol
they were trying to get an artifact out of it's lair, as they needed to get out of the domains of dread
Nah bards prep like wizards I guess.
Thatās what Iām getting for Xmas but might get another og 5e starter set also for my neices boyfriend who wants to play dnd when he comes down with her
Well thats your problem no healer
Nope.
Bards don't prepare spells. They learn them
Oh I shouldāve gotten the healer. Dang it.
Ahh ok so I was right originally
Luckily I got many saves
I mean yeah gotta have some healing i will say tho.... I learned a trick in that game idk how far you are so Idk. Im still in act 1 tho.
I've recently made a Tabaxi Thief Rogue named Lockpick, Pick for short..
Do we think that's a little on the nose? š§
||But short rests with a respec. Will heal you up to full||
Nice nice
Iām still in act 1 too! Anyways Iām excited to get a new dnd starter set since my last one was the mines of phalander or smth
I refuse to go there for not getting spoiled. All I said was respec and short rest so ain't too much spoiling
If you don't scroll up its safe
so, hows everyones day?
Gang I need druid name ideas because I can't think of anything šš
guys is there any links to dnd beyond with paid content
Don't think so, if someone sent u weird links don't take it
ik, i just want some free stuff
Rath kinda goes hard
Rathalos and Rathian mentioned?
Nature's wRATH

ok
Can I drop a hot topic? š
I actually told @crimson gulch I'd put in a pin in it a few days ago.
Short and hot: It's totally fine to not track HP in D&D.
Long and cool: I think HP should be treated like a vehicle for dramatic tension. That is, being too strict about HP can lead to the tension falling off from the "sweet spot". Sometimes a boss should die before its HP goes to zero. Sometimes a boss shouldn't die just because its HP went to zero. For newer DMs/GMs, I think you should stick to HP as is written - because you don't have the experience on how to build dramatic tension - but for folks that are a bit more experienced, I would actually encourage you to treat HP as a suggestion rather than a hard-and-fast measurement.
Haha, I'm so sorry, Islay.
I can delete and you can go. :)
Wait, what?
(Sorry, I thought you were typing something. And I just like... bullied a new topic in.)
I was going to ask about mentioning archive.org for previous editions and whether or not that was forbidden. But then I thought better of it.
Yeah, older editions probably need to get mentioned via DMs Guild - which is the WOTC vehicle for older/legacy content. Like Deities and Demigods from 3E is available there: https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/130333/deities-and-demigods-3e
And archive.org might not be technically allowed to re-host that info.
If WOTC doesn't rigorously protect their rights, they can lose them.
i dont think any of my players will see this, but this is generally my preferred way of running bosses
it's excellent, and helps epic moments feel epic, and fights feel cinematic
the HP is a guideline, for sure. amazing take, thank you for saying it out loud lol
HIII
wasn't cthulhu in that book?
Cthulhu was in the original 1980 edition. Also not tracking hit points would not be fun for me at all, regarding what that other person said.
Don't you guys love it when there was something that you could have done to save yourself, then you forgot it?
agreed
Yeah HP is law for my games

My Dragonborn had to get bailed out by Strahd after he died and then revived for a second time. Not sure if it counts, but yeah
I'm panicking so hard right now. I got a dm screen the monster manual and the dmg right in front of me and chatgpt lol.. I'm gonna DM for the first time to my 7 friends who have NO IDEA how to play DnD
chatgpt...
š
How do you intend on utilizing ChatGPT
quick questions
Never depend on chat GPT for accuracy
Real
In a campaign I played over Discord for a good minute, the DM had to panic-build an NPC using ChatGPT and it just turned out to be Victor from Arcane
my questions are mostly about setting a world
"Should the dwarves have cool hats?"
the rules I check the DMG
Make sure to take physical notes once you get it!
i'm using a 2024 dmg to run a 2014 game cuz I don't have a 2014 dmg
You dont really need the 2014 one imo unless youre more into homebrewing
I have my own world. the game is supposed to last until the ned of the break. so atleast maybe 3 sessions. and I also plan to just reskin monsters from the manual
how does one even do a 7 player adventure from lvl 1 - 3
Highly likely not with a game as rule-dense as 5e; or really abreviate the traditional play to be heavily focused on RP
5e is rule dense? blinks
Absolutely.
I think tracking HP strictly has pros and cons as I previously mentioned.
I play 3.5e.
Is there by chance anyone of you guys recommend me monsters and boss for a 7 player 3 session adventure. or is that too much to ask?
Absolutely not, thats why we are here. Is it about the mechanics or the stats? If latter, drop the level and anything we should know about
5e is rules-dense. 3.5e is just even more rules-dense.
Fair.
I think it's also a bit relative. 5E is very rules dense, if you compare it to those one-pager RPGs (without trying to imply one is better than the other).
thank you :3
Iām worried that running a game with 7 players will make combat feel slow and sluggish.
Since theyāre all starting at level 1, Iām unsure how many enemies I should be using.
What kind of monsters are appropriate for a level 1 party of seven?
How many should I put on the field at once?
For example, if I throw around 11 level-appropriate enemies at them, will the fight be over quickly because of action economy ā or is that actually dangerous enough to wipe the party?
At that point you come to the point of too many enemies and too many heroes; both sides would clump but I'd really recommend a horde of undead, slow movie-esque zombies as the characters barricade. They got more to do than just fight and due to entry points can control the flow of battle and you, as gm, have the narrative sensible freedom to just bring more because "its a horde!"
Combined with tactical goals or victory conditions that include fighting the undead, but also stopping a ritual, fortifying doors and so on - that could make it work, especially when certain things only require a single check as in a skill check challenge that is added up till they reach the needed number (and we are back at Clocks, yay :D).
Like "Learn how to stop the Ritual" is a Religion / Arcana check, adding up what you roll till you got a total of, idk, 40.
I'm screenshotting the heck out of this
thank you so muucch
the option to just put out more if I want to is brilliant and it makes sense. and the ritual part is also great to give them a purpose and not just run away.
Let us know if you need more help, and if not, how it went - seven players is a lot to handle.
yeah it is. and it's my first time DMing. the game happens at 27th
I'm still at my very first and only dnd campaign. it's almost a year now. and there's 7 of us aswell. idk how our DM does it.
oh yeah, for a first timer its going to be tricky :D best of luck
honestly, just making things up is better and more accurate than using chatgpt or any other AI for ttrpg rules.
like, an AI would come up with stuff like using the advanced version of a goblin-cavalier on page 509-510 of the monster manual, paying specific attention to how the d6 is used to add a bonus to the sneak matrix. meanwhile the real Monster Manual only has pages that go up to 384, and there is no such thing as a "sneak matrix" in D&D.
as for using AI chat for rules stuff... just don't.
yup and uhh lowk ai misses stuff a lot
it's good if u dont wanna scroll through like every single feat or something to find one that matches ur pc but it kinda sucks at everything else
I use it but not for rules and stuff, it is prone to hallucinations and will generate answers without actual factual basis.
searching an actual document or the DDB site is way faster, easier, and more accurate than using any AI to search or browse the rules.
Can be handy for generative content and reduce workload.
DDB's search function is terrible Lol.
still better than the made up non-applicable stuff an AI will invent.
Thats why you don't use it for rules, because it will just make stuff up.
and yes. i can't find stuff on DDB whenever i need to search.
How is everyone on this fine day
Wait I love that
yet the pdf files from Kobold Press are pretty easy to search for what i need. even manually searching through the physical books is easier than finding what i need through DDB.
trying to think about worldbuilding while sitting in my car while it's getting an oil change
It saddens me that Artificer doesn't get Deryan's Helpful Homunculi, Buttt-
my DM for my Alchemist Artifcer allowed me to get it :>
Now I can be the CEO of Potion Crafting
Ooh. Nice. Maybe just try looking around for some things to try
I'm thinking of doing the classic "roll to decide what elements I can add"
Bois i no longer need to cancep my d&d session today
What if you add an element system like ATLA? Like roll a d10 for your elememt and get access to a spell whatever your bending is. Ofc you can roll and get zero bending
Holy shizzles that's a good idea, I'll try it out
For example. Water benders get shape water, fire benders get fire bolt or another fire based cantrip, air gets gust and earth gets uhhhā¦
maybe something with wood and plant life?
Hard disagree.
If your not tracking hit points your not even really running the game and the dice are just there to make noise.
Iāll look at the cantrip lists
Alr thank you
Mold earth?
I looked on the druid cantrips first and mold earth looks like something earth benders could have
Hii guys, I'm completely new here and yea hahaha
I've played one game before irl, but I eventually stopped playing
I play on a VTT so HP is either not touched or altered out of combat when I can help it, while I agree on the tension thing, I also think it can set a precedent I know I wouldn't like as a player.
Potentially could work, I was thinking more like worldbuilding and the atmosphere because I feel like if you don't lay down the world it doesn't feel like actual immersion
So like.. what are the worlds that DND takes place in? Are there different races for the different worlds? Are they inspired by different irl culture?
What if its a world where people rely on magic too much and people who cant cast magic are looked down upon
Yes
a lot of worlds, a lot of races, and all yes
I encourage you to take a look online and look through some books
That's a very extremely loaded question, as DnD has around 10 settings and that's just officially iirc
I wonder what dnd race I would be
And some settings have races that others don't
D&D is basically the rules. there are some official settings. Mainly the Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk, along with Eberron, Dragonlance, and several Magic the Gathering planes.
there are a lot of them, the Forgotten realms is one of the most popular of all time, loads of different fantasy races with varying levels of real world influence
Human probably
For example Forgotten Realms has most of the races in the rules
Ooo I can see it as a society thing and tie it all around to bunch of other things !!
But Dark Sun or Athas only has a few races cause the rest were killed or died due to calamity (grimdark setting)
Are there any DND worlds inspired by New Orleans?
Kingdom of Zeal from Chrono Trigger.
Could always make your own
Definitely not a world
You see, i have all these ideas now. But when im thinking about my own campaign i will have no idea what to do
A city? Potentially
I feel that a lot LOL ty for the help, you're free to add me and we can like chat n stuff
Of course! Iād be happy to help at any time
Where can I make a DND character? I know there's apps n stuff but idk if I have space on my phone
no reason why you can't make a city that resembles New Orleans in an existing world. remember that the books offer suggestions on what you can do. once it gets to your table, your game is yours.
Try the dnd beyond website
On paper is best
Either or
I made a homemade ttrpg that was SUPER bad. It took place in a huge bayou/swamp world lol
Can't believe you would subject people to a Florida RPG, what a monster!
Paper works best if you're IRL or trust your players
I don't have anyone to play with haha I just wanted to make a character
if you want to do more homemade stuff, i really suggest using the physical books, and pencil and paper. you can pretty much do anything like that. the DnDBeyond site or any other VTT tool will be extremely restrictive or require a lot of time and effort to program in homebrew stuff.
I just suggested dnd beyond because itās the easiest to get reviewed by us
Wizards when they take 1d4 breathing damage
I'm of the opinion that you dont really need to change much to homebrew for 5E, the game already has a multitude of segmented mechanics that hardly go to use or creature features you could take, remix, tweak.
The DND app is Easier for me. I don't really care to do the calculations and do a lot of erasing and stuff.
Do you have any photos you dont need?
Thatās an odd question
Photos take up storage space
Yeah but this is a DnD server
exactly how its supposed to. difficulty comes in when trying to get it to do non-standard things.
Even if it wasn't asking someone that randomly would still be odd
All of the ttrpgs that I ran were short lived and I made the entire system. I had the players' health and inventory in one chat and all anyone rolled for was damage/if they did or didn't do something.
I got so confused with actual official systemsš
No no, they got a point. Delete some photos to get storage for an app
They said they dont have phone storage to download a dnd character app
Could always play online, also with character creation there's a lot of free resources you can find to make a character
Yea, but it's a hassle deleting them all lol
You guys don't judge people like me who can't figure this stuff out rightš
So to my original message, Iām not saying ānever track HPā - thatās just the spicy tagline.
But I am saying that HP should be there to inform the narrative and, in my games, narrative takes precedence. If the party kills the BBEG in the first round (what the HP tells me), then I can decide if thatās the narrative thatās best. In a lot of cases, it can be! But in others, maybe I made a mistake and this shouldāve felt more difficult.
So I change the HP. And if Iām changing the HP anyways thatās where I challenge that being strict about it is not nearly as necessary as a lot of folks seem to think.
Personally, I would just keep it simple and just find a editable PDF of the 2024 character sheet.
Judgement free zone
Yay
Not for just not understanding stuff
That's what I was referring to yea
You can download a character sheet off ddb iirc
Also I got really interested in dnd again bcs I just started watching 2 shows that reminded me of it (Delicious in Dungeon and Frieren)
Weāll only judge you if youāre rude, dismissive of others or donāt like dice
Last part is half joking
Omg I love those animes they're so good, glad you found inspiration to come here and learn more about related stuff with genres
Theres nothing wrong with learning. You have a willingness to learn and that can take you far.
WAIT WHY IS FRIEREN SMOKING SO MUCH
You'd be surprised how many people don't have a willingness to learn in this hobby.
Tbf, you already know a fair bit of the hobby!
I'm mostly scared about not learning correctly
And also within Warhammer but that's like a different can of worms but also similar
New spell she learned to clean out her lungs. Now she can smoke 500 cigarettes a day! As the gods intended.
Well, youāve come to the right place then. #dnd-newcomers can help you get started
Actually, that's not true. I am open to learning through discussion here.
Tbh any big ttrpg community has a sizeable group of people who refuse to learn the rules
Mhm yea, it's just a lot of stuff to go through
Hello open to learning through discussion here, Iām Nugget
Bit of a stupid question
What vibe do you guys like DND to have? The typical fantasy type like Frieren and Skyrim? Or something more like Labyrinth and Neverending Story?
I don't really see many that aren't European fantasy inspired so I can't think of more examples rn hahahaha
I gotta get back to drawing but I need to finish writing a bunch of stuff ughhh
I'm gonna be completely honest dnd can be in any world any vibe and as long as you have the power to make it and some other stuff then go ahead, go crazy with creativity š
I do really like the idea of Indian inspired, Japan inspired, Native American inspired, Mexico inspired, or even Australia inspired! Are those already made?
Usually high fantasy. Donāt mind if itās dark fantasy, medieval, renaissance, or some other genre.
I wish I knew the names of more fantasy genresš
Australia š¦šŗ mentioned!
Well, even professional dnd dms make mistakes, long as you understand mistakes and endeavor to do better you're golden.
Can always surf the Internet to see more
High fantasy; medium magic. Right now, the party is in the middle of a jungle in an Indian-sub-continent inspired area.
I like fantastical fantasy.
Like if it's a mage selling magic items I want their shop to be a chest they can make appear that is basically a little storage dimension. (This is a dnd spell called Leomunds Secret Chest)
I like my fantasy with fantasy sides and fantasy toppings on top
Oddball characters and scenarios in the skin of a normal fantasy. So like Delicious in Dungeon or Discworld.
If you really wanted to you can make a cyberpunk 2077 inspired DND campaign if you can make the stuff @elfin narwhal
You might wanna check out the actual cyberpunk systems for that instead
There was this game that I played as a kid called Blue Dragon, and I wish there was a name for that fantasy type! Idk how to describe it, but all of the "ancient" stuff is powered by technology while magic and primitive tech is the norm
There's already a Cyberpunk ttrpgš how different are the two?
As long as the power scaling fits dnd, it can be adapted to a lot of things. Though, itās not gonna beat systems specifically created for those adapted genres
Significantly
DnD 5e is for superheroes that fight great monsters
Cyberpunk is for ordinary people who can die with a stray bullet to the head
exactly
Both sound super interesting. I also wanted to play The Electric State too
For example if you put a dnd character in cyberpunk, they'd kill V in an instant
They'd burn Adam Smasher alive.
And this is a low level dnd adventurer
A high level dnd party could destroy any of the corporations in a day and be done in time for dinner
Well I have multiple but I just came up with a new one
I continue to disagree, failing to plan challenging encounters makes your game weak, and moving the goal posts mid combat is not the solution.
The narrative is what emerges from the gameplay and our reactions and immersion into it. if you know how things are going to end why even play?
Fudging the numbers just removes player agency and any potency their characters have in the game.
Making mistakes is important for learning how to run the game best, and dialing in the challenge of your battles is one of the most important things to learn, but Design should end when you roll imitative.
allways plan multi phase boss fights is actualy a chapter in the book im writing
I had a new DND character idea!!! Basically, the character appears to be an elf mage and she is super sweet and caring but only at a distance. It turns out that she's actually an AI who is now in the body of a machine that has been modified so heavily that she's indistinguishable from a real elf!
Is this interesting? Sorry if not
Got a fight with both ||Sammaster's statblock|| and a modified ||Black Greatwyrm||
for a two phase fight
Wait, do robots and computers and AI even exist in the DND worlds?
yes and no
Yes, but not very widespread
One specific setting has synthetic people called Warforged.
Constructs, thinking machines, Crystals that know things, Space ships that fell to the ground
Does my character idea sound like something that could fit? Or should I scrap this
you need to ask your DM that, its the DM that says what can work or not in their games
As for constructs which robots are in, they're in every setting to some degree, but actual robots are also that setting and FR only but very rare.
My friend whose our current DM is kinda really garbage at encounter design. And I think our friend group who are normally pretty rule of cool folks are starting to take note. Even had a player go. "Sweet a level up? Better throw away non-damaging spells like command, banishment, etc none of that shite ever works!"
when in doubt stick to options in the players handbook
RIP gold in personal inventory
My friend's response was "well, you tried those in boss encounters, might work with normal enemies!" Mind you, any fight we ever get into is named important characters.
Had to buy rations for the team at double the normal price
most really powerful entities have great saving throws, and even legendary resistances
That + 2 waterskins means -42 gold
No resistance, just immune damage sponges.
Who all happen to have innate powers so pffff to counterspell too.
that honestly sounds like just normal creatures at high CR rating from the monster manual
Hey
hey
I couldn't really do much because trying to sell off items would be even worse. Only a fifth of the total value
And my Charisma is just nonexistent
Does anyone know where I can hop on to quick one shots?
