I AGREE WITH THIS! RAAAAGHHH
You'd still have to talk to your dm to see if it's allowed.
Well I'm just saying it because the one person was asking about a doll
And that literally seems like a doll
Ah, my mistake, original gangster 🧐
i find it fun if you have a origin feat that gives you a little magic
the monk casts shield
hey whats up guys
Nah, mate, I'm going all in on the punching or all in on the magic (but also with punching, I love Gishes)
i wish there was a proper magical monk subclass
that isnt just another 2014 elemental monk
i wish there was a proper monk subclass in general lmao
there is some good ones
hey guys, if im having no like finding a dm or people to play with in the find a game section what should i do?? could someone please help me?
Do you not like any of the monk subclasses 😳
I had this Tabaxi Elements Monk
His name was Sumatra
He ran up a wall to punch a flying dragon in the face and then later proceeded to kill said dragon without his elemental attunement, but, I decided to flavor it as if he had it on anyway
It was glorious
It was an Adult Black Dragon named Sablewing
If you wanted to use this server to find a group check out the instructions in #find-a-game !
in one of the games im in im playing a elements monk he could up to a hobgoblin that was riding away on a worg
yea ive posted my request days ago just no luck unfortunately
i dashed into the forest after him he was bugging me cause everytime i got near him he would cast a spell like hold person and stop me just before i could do anything
I'm gonna be playing a Centaur Berserker Barbarian soon
Very exited 👁
Glory Kill time!!!!
sadly havent been able to play him in so long
Oh, I was talking about new Elements Monk personally lol
i am in another campaign with the same people
so was i
i 1v1ed a berserker barb and barely won
no one else wanted to fight it so the dance bard attempted to hit it with spells
Try browsing through #looking-for-players to see if any DM postings meet your criteria if you haven’t already
i do prefer playing more dark fantasy games mostly because i love horror and it fits better in those games if im allowed
Welp i just got reject but it okay im pretty new and most want 18+ so it completely understandable
iirc reddits r/lfg has a teen tag for younger people running/playing games so try there to find some people your age :)
Thanks!
idk if its a full tag but I remember seeing a few games mentioning that theyre by/for teens yesterday when I was looking for games so, worth a shot
Is there any scenario in which you'd use a longsword with two hands over a greatsword?
2014 or 24
For the mastery or because your class/subclass doesn't let you use heavy weapons
2014
(Then remove the mastery part 😂 )
Which classes specifically exclude heavy weapons?
Ah, rogue has longsword proficiency specifically
Kensei monk and Bladesinger wizard? 🤔
Intriguing
I don’t think rogues are proficient in longswords, thought it was finesse or light weapons and some ranged
They kinda require a few different stats and there’s not a huge benefit to multiclassing them (unless I’m missing something)
Why do Githyanki have boobs if they hatch from eggs?
Because they just do
My guess it’s a left over of the race they used to be before becoming Gith by the Mind Flayers.
Day 6 of my 13 game streak before I'm off for Christmas
it helps them balance.
Qeustion about the Longsword it says "Sap. If you hit a creature with this weapon, that creature has Disadvantage on its next attack roll before the start of your next turn." wat is sap?
Its the name of the weapon mastery
ah ok. so this future works on every hit i make with this weapon?
I havent played with the 2024 weapon masteries but as far as i can tell yes
Only their first attack though, so if they have multiattack their 2nd attack should be normal
2014 doesnt have weapon masteries, theyre a 2024 addition
A special feature called a weapon masteries that Martial characters get with specific weapons d
Like weaker versions of Battle Master Maneuvers
seems i cant use that since we gona use 2014 rules.
If youre on good terms with the dm you can see if hes willing to add it as basically homebrew but its not a default 2014 thing
hmm i look into that
Yeah also you do not automatically get a weapon mastery on a weapon
It’s a class feature (or a feat for 1 mastery)
proficiency in that weapon doest count?
No
There is
-Proficiency in a weapon then there is Mastery over a Weapon
That’s one of the weaknesses of the 2024 Blade warlock for example. They cannot get Mastery over their summoned weapons (besides the new weapon master feat)
Same with Bladesingers and Valor Bards
Only Fighters, Paladins, Rangers; Rogues, and Barbarians can get Mastery over a weapon.
my character is going to be a paladin oath breaker we start at lvl 3 and we can choose 1 uncommon item
oh boy, what item do you ahve in mind
also what race
Reborn, armor of the fallen plate variant dm aproved 😄
what variant for the reborn/ ancestry?
My favorite fact about 2024 Fighter is they can eventually swap their weapon masteries out every time they hit an enemy
seems nice for the character, altough not one of the "best" items
So they could change the Longsword’s Sap into a Push or Slow effect instead
but seems to fit the chracter well :)))
no clue stock traits as written on the page?? humanoid?
getting sage background with it
Ancestral Legacy. If you replace a race with this lineage, you can keep the following elements of that race: any skill proficiencies you gained from it and any climbing, flying, or swimming speed you gained from it.
If you don't keep any of those elements or you choose this lineage at character creation, you gain proficiency in two skills of your choice.
you could take sth with a flying speed e.g. winged tiefling if allowed as thats kinda busted
My guess is rudolfhertz is using the DnDBeyond defaults than reading the books
yea thats wat i did 2 proficiency in two skills of your choice.
I see
i do have the books but looking on the net is faster
is your goal to have a "strong" character or just thematically sound?
i also kind of found a way how to get 2 skeleton summons out of the animate dead spell that comes with the armor
Yeah looking on the net hides a lot of stuff too
Yea notably you cannot choose any other thing at character creation
depends on where you look :))))
Yikes
My first ever pc died... That's a horrible experience...
You can only take 2 skill profs at character creation. The "keeping from another species" bit is only if you become it during a campaign
true I guess, but thats probably sth you could talk to your dm about
making a character based from story from another game ( Heroes of might and magic 3 )
look up "straker" from homm3. thats wat im tryng to make my paladin oath breaker with its background story
I see
What other tomes are there to read? I know theres the normal stat ones, then the martial skill one and the magoc resistance scroll. But is there any others?
What?
wym?
Do you mean the magic items?
The tomes than increase one stat by two
only for mental ones right? INT WIS CHA iirc
There is the constitution one
strength and dex too
whats that one called? I only remember/ have found understanding, clear thought and leadership and influence
It’s called Manual of Bodily Health
What are their names?
Gainful exercise was one right?
ah yeh found them
I think the Dex one is Quickness of Action iirc
I was filtering for "tome" mb not manual lol
Manual of Gainful Exercise for STR, of Bodily Health for CON and of Quickness of Action for DEX
They work once every century too
Why?
Got beheaded by a group of headhunter
Why
I planned to retreat but other team members meta pressing me into position, i ended up unconscious.
Then the battle end, they retreat and the leader just casually beheaded my lovely unconscious boy
what book are those from?
Characters die. It happens. Roll up a new one and get back in.
Ah I might be thinking of a different monster
I was thinking of the Mythic monster from Ravenloft that takes off heads on a critical hit
if i see my whole party dyng i would cast invisibility and get the hell out of there
I simply can't, his dead is too much for me... He's just an innocent boy...
I know a few of my characters might die eventually, specially with how I play them lmao
An adventurer under the alias of Howard, the cow, also known as "coward"
My Earth Genasi Genies Paladin died fighting off a Lich so the party could escape from the Shadowfell, truly a chad
He only wanted to return home and reunite with his dad...
My Earth Genasi's father was a Dao (Earth Genie lol), he would've been proud of his son for dying in combat
I'm afraid to lose my character, because my party certainly needs a tank and I don't wanna build another one, because they tend to be boring
And I am sooo sure your character will not die to another undead lord in the Shadowfell.
No way that happens twice in once campaign
Sovis? No.. of course not!
Well... My 62 hp can't stand 8 hogoblin and a giant hyena all at once...
If Sovis dies, I'm bringing in the Big Guns (Reginald)
At lv4 too
And I am sure he will not also die to a Undead Lord in <looks at planes> yeah ok it would not be the Shadowfell
Reginald Montique Ferdinand Esquire!
The Giff Pugilist Leadeater 🧐
My Earth Genasi Paladin was Nowhere near strong enough to take down a Lich, but he fought anyway (Level 11 fighting a CR 20 lmao)
Incorrect
Whar
Cr21
Ah, yes, CR 21 lmao
There was no chance
Rather die with Pride than lose the entire party 🔥
Well, Jabal would've liked to return home having vanquished Vecna, but it was his duty to maintain the pride of his family
"An Earth Elemental endures. You either stand like a mountain or you crumble into pebbles."
He fell pretty fast admittedly, but he did a Solid hit on the Lich and took 4 full attacks before dying
Who says that he cant? Jusg have ypur patty keep holding on to the skull and once u get a high enough lvl cast true resurection or sth
Well, they're level 4 at the moment he said, so it'd just be better to make a new character and play on, because even if he's resurrected at that point, he'll still be a level 4 PC.
We ain't that close...
Well the camp is end at lv5
Oh yeah i just meant as a nice completion to their story
what manner of campaign ends at 5????
A short one?
Sort of a tribute to their fallen comrade
Phandelver...
An official moduel. (Occasionally)
how sinister of them.
That's not sinister, that's just deciding that you'll run a short campaign. You can do that.
Phandevler is supposed to be a beginner adventure tbh (or can be)
Well all the blame to DM for make us facing 8 hogoblin and giant hyena
Hey people what's the dumbest way you have killed a creature you weren't supposed to kill
For me I technically killed a tarasque by jumping inside its mouth, stabing its heart over and over while guzzling health potions
Look on the bright side, new character!
A hobgoblin killed my character's mastiff. I begged the Cleric to cast Revivify.
yea but i think there's a difference between occuring over a short duration and depriving people of the mechanics of like, 80% of subclasses
Did the cleric cast revivify?
And there was nothing you, or your party could have done to avoid this fate?
Oh, she did. Then I retired that dog to never go back into combat duty again.
My Cavalier Fighter lost his childhood horse, I know the pain 😔
You're not depriving them of anything if the campaign was advertised as 1-5 in the first place.
...
i almost murdered a very important NPC by making them eat a berry that they thought was a cranberry but was actually a Berry Of Immediate Murder or smth (one of the teammates rolled a high enough Nature to determine that berry and a cranberry are not the same thing and stopped it from being eaten)
Well that sounds weird
I build a pacifist char for this camp only to be thrown into countless death encounter
It's not meant to be insensitive, but your new character could carry on the legacy!
They could avenge your lad (either by player satisfaction or if they knew them in life)
Your dm must have been so worried about losing a plot relevant npc lol
Lol yeah
I planned to retreat but the oldbies in the party pressing me to stay
Thats why you talk before a campaign and figure out whst kinds of characters fit it
I've never played a character who's intentionally or unintentionally tried to kill an innocent NPC lmao
i think they just used a generic table for Foraging, which is where i got the berries
I do
I worry what my Centaur Berserker Barbarian might do when I play him, however...
🤔
But as the camp progress, it's becomes a dangerous adventure
I genuinely think my dm has tried to kill my barbarian off
So you asked the dm if a pacifist character is appropriate?
It's advertised as a newbie friendly, slow adventure
we learned OOC that the berry provokes a CON save and would have murdered a goat
But most of plater got bored and ask for combat
They're talking to Tori
Newbies still want fun
Is there a way to get expertise or proficiency on a new ability save?
Yeah... But the oldbies wanted battle
Resilient feat
There's no way to get expertise though
A few subclasses give you an extra save Proficiency too
If you are a bard you get expertise
The resilient feat grants you proficiency in a saving throw you don’t have
Hmmm
Not on saving throws.
Not with an ability save
Srry didn't see thag part of the text lol
If the dm allowed a pacifist character and now made it impossible to use a pacifist character, thats on the dm
They all said yes at session 0
Sounds like a lack of foresight by everyone
it is important to realize that the satyr man very well could have just been a slightly modified Commoner stat block, so the berries could absolutely have just been like 1d4 Poison damage
But now the camp is a mess since half of the players are roleplay focused
Pacifists rarely go down well in dnd considering combat is at least 33% of the game
Hello
Imagine a party of all pacifists 🧐
Frankly, I hate to say it
But having a completely pacifist character in D&D is rather.. pointless, as a majority of the game centre's around combat.
People should have said no in session 0
What about a full party of just cleric HAHAHAHHA
An easy way to do that is be a cleric that only has spells to help the party
I am a-okay if a player wants to play a character who won’t kill, but a character who won’t fight is…
You could go for the mind control spell route and like, use command to send someone to the mines
My Orc Monk was a "Pacifist" as in he wouldn't KILL humanoid creatures, but he'd still fight them.
Hello!
They would tear the world atsunder
Well i also focus on battle too, but I'm not that experienced to optimize my character
Using intimidation, persuasion and all possible charisma checks to convince enemies that the best route is away from you
It would be overpowered ngl 😭
Fun Fact:
If you're engaging in combat by aiding it, you're not being a pacifist.
My cleric wouldnt defend himself but he would do whats necessary to save others, like the party, including attacks and killing
Which magic items that Artificers wouldn't be able to attune to RAW do you think should be able to attune to?
i mean the campaign where i almost committed a Involuntary Manslaughter is like, 95% rp/puzzles and 5% combat
You can convince bandits, thiefs, mercenaries. But dragons, undeads, elementals, monsters..
Depends on your personal definition of it like a person who won't harm others can still help in combat with out harming another creature
Its honestly up to you how your charecter sees it
In a world where adventurers often die, or have to fight to survive, why the hell would a pacifist even go on an adventure if they're aware that there's a possibility of unavoidable violence.
Idk lol
That's just me, though
I do try to negotiate in the start of every battle but dm said nah and let the enemies attack
My barbarian is a pacifist. He once asked an enemy mercenary if he would take a dump on a merfolk protected beach, to which the mercenary promptly said "no". He then said that if he didn't want to become a turd at the shore, he should run away
A D&D pacifist being unwilling to kill - but still willing to employ violence to achieve their goals - is not, by definition, a pacifist, but it's a useful and necessary dodge for a bit of that I shalt not kill flavour
i've really wanted to make a character with extremely high CHA whos entire ball is "pls no hurt me or my friends >.<"
EXACTLY
Well, the first and second session i did avoid some conflict
But not from the third till now
Well tori just wanted to complete the quest
The intimidation check worked, and by now the mercenary should've left the town
You can swear not to kill people, and be like batman and just beat up the bad guys, but just because you're not killing them doesn't mean you're a pacifist
i think it's even an optional rule that, should a creature's HP become 0, the attacker can choose whether they're dead or unconscious
"I will not kill you, but I'll walk you through the plane of horrors and forever scar your mind, because you took away the last ice cube in the pot"
My Cavalier Fighter tries to resolve things with words before combat because he doesn't LIKE killing people, but he'll still kill if he has to protect his party.
He wants to be the best Knight he can be, a person who understands the blights of other people, but if you're unwilling to negotiate, you're gonna have to throw down.
The goal of my char is to complete whatever task they got and take money then go home (he got far away from home, now he wanna go back)
You might not convince a dragon to stop, but you can convince them that you came not as looters or enemies, but as fans
Imagine a bard walking to a dragon and offering to write poems about their deeds
in theory, you could also have a character who "doesn't kill people" but does fight and is really bad at aiming for non vital components
I simply ran away if i see one...
A ranger specialized at hitting arrows to the knee
selling starting equipment at season 0 and 1. a thing or avoid?
Shout out to the time a player asked if he could make an animal handling check in an attempt to tame… a Tarrasque
Gets disadvantage on persuasion checks against guards
Well... I don't wanna be meta pressing by old fashioned players so i quit the camp for good
Depends on the damage used
"All it takes to make an ally is the building of trust. I put my blade down and turn away to my friends to tell them I trust you not to stab me in the back."
think like, Ready Or Not, like the objective is get everybody, even the hostiles, out alive but they really don't wanna surrender peacefully and you don't have a less lethal option
Hey chat
I'm in a wizard battle and my friend casted second thoughts and doubt on me
How do I counter this?
(But also if you stab my back you're a COWARD!)
"Can I pet that dawg??"
Pretty much it 😭
That's hilarious
Second Thoughts and Doubt are homebrew spells surely right
"That's a weird cat!"
What next, Gaslight and Manipulation?
Reaction Counterspell?
I cast girlboss intervention
tbf that's just Lawful Evil Bard
I'll do the gaslight bit
I don't know him deeply for manipulation spells
Oh no I'm being taken seriously here
My Cavalier Fighter also once stood in front of a charging Rhino to protect people he thought were innocent, he was wrong, they were poachers, but he kicked their asses afterwards
She is a dude 😂
“Did I stutter?” /ref
The girlboss im asking for isnt
Aye..
Sign me up, chief 😎
Divine intervention calls on your deity to take action
Well...?
*plays love on top
Their character is dead now
Sounds like the tarrasque pet them
Freaky thoughts... Freaky thoughts fade
Lovely weather we're having.
I casted gaslighting on him
Pointing out that he puts himself over others even his own family who loved and cherished him
He then hits you with an "And?"
It's joever from there if he does, chief
I have no counter against that
"You're an irredeemable monster!"
"oh- uh- i, uh, What took you so long? IDIOT!" flick
Other than call him out for being a massive 🫏
"You're a horrible person!!!"
"Pssh, okay?" Starts mogging
I can only think of one thing rn
I cast karma
haii
anyone got recommendations for books with a bunch of races, Think that's one of the things im focused on ATM, for artificer, heard of astral elves, they sound cool, but interested in hearing more options, given just might try something else for later campaigns
is there any possible dnd game where you do it over message?
it sounds really funny, actually, to make a character who believes in karma (in which the universe is to sort goods and evils on its own), and in consequence, is literally just the most cartoonishly sinister person possible because "the timeline will sort itself as it is owed and due, i need worry not."
Yep, that's play-by-post (PBP).
Monsters of the Multiverse has a ton of races
is there a roll command for the dice or do I have to buy them?
They basically took nearly every races from adventures or small books at put them in one for 5th edition
Depends on how the group plays, but you generally don't have to buy dice to play. Most folks just like 'em anyway!
Nearly. Some still were left out that were setting specific
you can google "dice" or "rng" and you'll get the accordant tools to dice or rng
okayy thank youu ! Does it matter if I'm new to start a game? I know the basics and have been studying clerics alot
an rng is slightly different to dice but it fits the needs of randomness
Hey 👋
Ahh, So hype, Tonight is my private exandrian game, tommorow is my Launch of my Brand New Moonshae islands campaign, Wednesday is the Shattered Teeth, Thursday is the Dunes of Calimport, Friday is the Dungeon of the mad mage, Saturday is a one shot, Sunday is the Tyrrany of Dragons, then im off for christmas
Depends, honestly. Some folks will be welcome to teaching newbies, some won't. Just be honest and see how people respond. My take is you'll get farther if you've learned the rules to some degree.
Shout out to the time when a player who just got 150$ worth of character art for a level 2 Paladin and stood in front of a Hobgoblin with Martial Advantage and said.
"Hit me."
is there any break during campaigns?
There's no one way. It's up to the group.
Based
ohh okay, how long are campaigns regularly
Nothing like insta killing a paladin on a critical hit.
that looks like an extensive list, do we have one for classes as well/subclasses, out of curiosity, to enrich the group in subclasses
When you reply directly, please turn the toggle to OFF. It's annoying to be pinged when active in a conversation.
Again, it's impossible to say. It could be a matter of weeks, months, years. There are too many variables to give a general answer.
Depends if you are playing 2014 or 2024
okayy thank you
2024
I would've done the same as the Paladin fr
The only subclasses that have been released in addition to the PHB is Forgotten Realms Heroes of Faerûn.
fair enough, thank you for your help, mgiht go with spelljammers, thus far astral elf is the one that interests me the most
Partially because we got Volos guide to monsters and the new artificier, so stuff like kenku, Changeling and a couple of others some 2014 packs are unlocked
My group does a 2 week hiatus around major holidays(one week before and one week after), but this is far from standard.
qeustion the character sheet has 3 places to write ur weapons in it ant atk bonus dmg type, does that mean you can have 3 weapons on the ready? or does switching weapons take a action no mater where you have stored?. does switching a weapon take 1 action or 2 ? like first you stow away your weapon than draw another one? from your hilth? belt? backpack?
Pretty common, though, especially at the end of the year.
It's just a list. Could have six lines on it, it doesn't matter. The rules and your class features are what count.
so switching a weapon does that take 1 or 2 actions?
Something like, you can draw or sheath a weapon for free as part of an attack, and you get one free item interaction apart from that on your turn.
Ben 10 is a cool druid idea
Sometimes spamming Shapechange is fun
I mean, he does use just one shapechange for like 90% of his encounters
A lot of nail shaped problems for his hammer
Man i really wish they would add Sebastion Crowe Guide to Drakkenheim on DDB, I really like the Apothicary class and not a fan of having to NOT use DDB
is a village tavern the best campaign starting point.
Not necessarily. You could also give your players a common employer or have them as members of a common faction before play begins.
This helps provide them with motivation to work cooperatively rather than just being a bunch of strangers that are expected to form a group and do something.
nah the graveyard is, or a battlefield as looters
What 2 do when i am DMing and one dude just fights everyone and no quest can begin bc he kills every NPC
You remove that player from the table.
Or you start again and tell them that they need to work cooperatively with the other players. D&D isn't a solo game to go running around killing everything...
I mean, it COULD be, but as the DM, you can make it clear that's not the kind of game you want to run.
Alternatively, you put a really big, powerful NPC in their path that they can't kill.
I think communication is the path forward. If they don't adjust as a result of that conversation, they don't get to play anymore.
yea, players can't regard a campaign as a genocide run because most campaigns are fundamentally not programmed for that
The players at the table have to understand what the game is about. Working together and picking up a plot hook is a convention of the game. That means that it happens regardless of how 'unrealistic' it may seem.
is spelljammers considered under 2014 or 2024 edition?
2014, yea
Printed in 2014 but still useable in 2024
there's always the ol' "this NPC is a retired adventurer who knows Hypnotic Pattern"
Unless it gets reprinted it usually applies to both versions
fair enough, curious because we're slowly moving to 2024 it seems
so in a way, kind of afraid of getting something that people might not be interested in due to moving out of that
It does get a bit wooly if you start trying to do a lot of things. Free hands and object interactions etc.
caveat being that its the DMs job to present a scenario that doesnt completely obliterate the players belief in the world
but yes players should make characters who are interested in going for plot hooks in general
Absolutely. That's why giving them a reason to work together aside from just hanging out at an inn and waiting for the plot to happen is a good idea.
is there anything that wont work between the 2024 rules + spacejammers?
Probably not
For my game, the players all started signing a contract to work for a new employer. That made it easy for them to work together and follow the orders given to them. In one game I played, we all started by responding to the same "help wanted" ad.
any general changes like racial bonuses gone, maybe some half-somethings in the book, changes to mechanics like physical bludgeon resistance etc
The weapons on board are all Siege Equipment, so they can just use 2024 Siege Equipment rules. The ships all come with their own information, so using that is fine.
and anything that doesnt work can probably be adapted easily
Yeah the only thing I can really think of would be new classes but they're generally pretty compatible
Think of it as a spelljammer stress test for 2024 lol
Does anyone know of an in-person dnd group near Denver, CO?
lol probably not in the right chat for that question
You mean Spelljammer?
Yes
Yeah anything designed for 2014 stuff will have zero conflict with 2024 rules. Because they only add/tack on things.
#find-a-game might be better or #looking-for-players , #looking-for-community
there's a lot of options
be careful tho there's some weirdos out there
Your'e also better off looking at local game stores and the like as well
okay thank you! will keep in mind. I wasn’t sure what chat to put it in, theres a lot
yeah honestly, local game store or a group of friends who are down to try
Game stores sound like my best bet, thanks!
Personally I would look elsewhere but to each their own
Hey there!
Whys that? Are game store sketchy sometimes? what would you recommend?
No risk of death makes d&d boring.
Just bring in innocent boy jr
Has anybody here read the new artificer2024 rulebook and can give me their opinion on it?
I have read it. It's fine. Cartographer is neat. If you want an hyper detailed breakdown of it #optimization might by your spot.
is it worth it to buy the dnd players handbook e5 and a dice set?
Do you like the game enough to make that feel like a good deal?
If you’re just starting out the free rules and a digital dice roller will be enough to help you find out if you like the game enough to invest in it more.
Which players handbook? There are two of them now.
Red spine is newer. Black spine is older.
If you have never played before. I would not buy it yet. Find a game and use the Free Rules. If you do like it. Then get the Red Spine.
You may also find that you have to run a game yourself in order to get to play. That's what I had to do.
But if your group says 2014 only. Get the black spine.
There has gotta be a better way to explain that to a newbie that I am missing.
I think you're doing quite well.
yea i feel like officially calling it 5.5e would be preferable to the current spine system because i just learned this lol
Referring to it by colour makes me think of Pokemon.
And while '14 and '24 is good in text is a mouthful in conversation
Seek the tome with a spine the colour of a moonless, starless night...
Do you think 2014 will phase out like 3.0 did?
It already has
Has it?
Session night tomorrow, and I'm struggling to restructure things. Over the first two sessions the players have noticed a lot of the rising tension before the first conflict, leading to them getting involved before the inciting incident. The first conflict was going to be about rescuing kidnapped nobles from a local villain, but now the heroes are jumping in to adventure while the villain was still setting up the kidnapping, and hasn't gone through with it yet. The party is clearly frustrated about not understanding what's going on, so I want to find a way to go ahead and clue them in quickly. Any thoughts?
Then I would suggest to anyone that they buy the older version.
im EXTREMELY new to dnd, never played yet. still in the jist of creating my first character, but i prefer a hand-on book to a pdf, and I think the dice are sick so it would be cool to have either way. Im playing with a group (hopefully) for the first time next week so ill see how that goes.
Is it possible for the players to prevent the abductions?
When I mean that it's phased out, I mean that Wizards of the Coast is not going to produce any more content for that version of the game. Some third parties still are, but the vast majority of them, especially over on the DMs Guild are even updating their old products to work with the new versions of the rules
Maybe, but then we go from a quest with big bad monsters at the villains lair to just the villain's mooks he sent to do the kidnapping. It'll be kinda below their paygrade
I feel like I need a dictionary to know what any of this means
There will always be player holdouts in people who are too stubborn to move on to the newest provision of the game.
In 3rd Edition the reason why that level of people who played the original third Edition versus 3.5 so small is because 3E had a very short lifespan
So if you're playing with your first group, do you know if they are using the 2024 rules or the 2014 rules?
Lord Kas, you're working on a FR project?
not sure, ill ask!
I am. It's not an official of course, and it has no mechanical value. It is a giant map of the Forgotten Realms as well as a travelogue across all regions. Think of the atlas map that came out for the new books, but more detailed and for the entire planet.
Very cool! Volo or Elminster again, or do you have a new character cataloging the Realms in your text?
You're right! There are so many acronyms. But the folks here are friendly, so if you need something explained, just ask.
One year as a gift from a player I received an older FR sourcebook I didn't already have, annotated in full by that player's 20th level adventurer. Meant the world to me
It's a new character, but part of the journey will be in the various regions of the Realms. We want to have NPCs for DMs to use. So there will be 200 200 NPCs with full body art, both canonical ones and Homebrew ones.
To give DMs a little bit, we're doing three Adventure hooks one paragraph long for each of the 200 regions. So 600 Adventure hooks
If you're able yo DM me any information, I'd love to hear more! Sounds right up my alley
Were also home brewing out the continents that never got touched like Osse, Katashaka, And a continent from Ed Greenwood's home game that's never made an appearance in official products.
Sure, send me a request and I can talk more
I honestly thought surely I already had in the past. Thanks!
guys i have a question
to make eric draven(the crow from the movie) is it better to make it an undead monk or warlock???
The crow from what movie
from the crow
The movie, the Crow.
with warlock i can even give him the qctual crow
he's an undead man who came back a year after his death to kill his/his wife's murderers
There are two movies called The Crow.
the old, more popular one
Plus a sequal to the first one.
the first one and the sequel, the new one IMO sucks
The new one, you mean?
"the crow" and "the crow-city of angels" i thjnk is called
I don't know how you could do it in Fifth Edition, but in 3.5e, there's a supplement called Ghostwalk that would probably work.
there's also the revenant i think???
or is it the same as undead???
as the name, revenant sounds more right
There's also a template in 3.5e for playing an undead with class levels called a Necropolitan that would also potentially work.
nice, thanks
IDK what Fifth edition has for playing undead characters with class levels.
it also needs to look as human as possible if it doesnt compromise it too much
I think reborn is the only thing that comes close
did one of you waych the movie?
I've seen them. Ages ago, though.
they are using the 2014 rules
same, i rewatched it and am also drawig a portrait👀
My husband is a big Cure fan, so it was a thing when they came out.
So if you wish to get a player's handbook get the one with the fire giant on the cover. With the words player's handbook at the top and with the black spine
Our first date was a Cure concert. A million years ago. Can't say I'm a huge fan, but I know a few of the songs.
sounds cool, thanks!
imo they are pretty good, they give a good mood with the songs
You know I was thinking about how this could very easily be resolved with the word revised
so should i make an undead warlock with good agility and acrobatics(idk how to spell it srry)???
Acrobatics is probably not needed, but 14 dex is always nice
i mean 5e Revised might work too, but 5.5e is different enough from 5e to eliminate like 90% of mistakes
I mean it worked for Pathfinder
i mean to make the crow
oh, might work then, i haven't played pathfinder
Uhh you can probably do the same without acrobatics, flavoring is free
All of their new books say Second Edition Revised
I could have swore you. The revised remaster made it somewhere on the books. They also did rename some of their books like instead of a generic core rule book. There is player core and GM core and NPC core
Npc core seems like a book 5e could use.
Would have been easier if they'd just called it 5.5 officially.
So why didn't they? 🤔
Who knows why WOTC does anything?
True
I understand why. The difference between third Edition and 3.5. Was a big difference. Much larger than what we have now.
This Edition refresh is much like the 1995 reprint of the second edition books. Which also had the same confusion that happened around these books release. Where one of the first pages in the 1995 players handbook was a letter from the editor stressing that it was not a new Edition.
The SRD says it's version 5.2.1, so yeah.
But in today's world, utilizing terminology like revise or remastered would have been very good.
Heck, D&D 5e already did this with some of their supplemental material.
When they remade the dungeon master screen from the first 5th edition iteration to the second version, they called it reincarnated.
So call it 5.25 😉
I remember looking at that reprint and thinking, naw I'll just keep my 1989 versions. Maybe embracing ambiguity can improve book sales?
Should be noted this isn’t even the first time they updated and replaced the core rulebooks for 5e
This one just came with fixed mechanics
I don’t even know if it’s the second time either
2017 is one notably update I remember
I mean errata always has been a thing.
This one comes with a price tag, though.
Im interested in how the new alchemist and artillerist look like
is there anywhere inside the EU selling the physical copies to spelljammer+
Yeah I can respect that though with the amount of changes and updates to core concepts like classes. And monsters.
Just the keeping it all one edition is and will be a confusing mess for new players. Until the black spine books are completely out of print.
Good day Adventurers, This is a request for a DM that will be able to assist newcomers to DND on specifically TableTop simulator there are 4 of us, we would also like help to make our characters by rolling stats :p
It’ll give you instructions on how to find a DM
Where do I start with non 5e Eberron?
I bet TTS has a Discord or forums or something, too.
Get a non 5e eberron book. Just about every edition has one except OSE, ADND, and I think 1e?
The Eberron Discord server has some people that work on conversions for other systems (non-D&D)
The original books were in 3.5e, and there are a small amount in 4e
as a reborn race i only need 4 hours of rest instead of 8, would this be idea to take tool profs at lvl 4 so i can craft items durning these hours ? or should i get something else instead ?
Check out the proficiencies first, see what kind of things you might be able to make.
since i get to choose from 3 profs smithing, carpenter, and thinkering would give me a great varianity of stuff right?
meh i think would be beter just to get the alchemy jug abuse that and buy the things i actualy need and get a proper feat
do you think the DM will let you abuse stuff?
abuse. more like proper use of the item as described it says wil do 😉
What is an appropriate challenge for a lvl 1 party of 6?
Blue adult dracolich
try a phase spider
I´ll go and take a look. Eberron´s the last server I need to go unbanned in since I resolved a certain little hacking issue from a while back
Ladies n Gentlemen and all in between, I have BALLER news.
My Wyrmling (My Wizards "Daughter") started her dragon hoard, I'm so proud as a Father!
Brings a tear to me eye
Hi so proud as a Father, I’m Nugget!
And congratulations!
You're about to be a consumed nugget.
No, I’m Nugget. Who’s “About To Be A Consumed Nugget”?
Sounds like a very long name
I DESPISE you >-> /j
:D
Hey i feel like it would be easier for there to be looking for players teens cause it kinda hard to know if they willing to
Folks can put in their desired age ranges for players (just don’t share exact ages or make the age range to narrow)
Is it weird that I don't really feel like playing a race that isn't humanoid?
I.e. dwarf, Halfling, and human
Nah.
Everyone has their preferences
My friends also usually play humanoids with my best friend exclusively playing human fighters so I think it's fine
Actually, there is a different question i think should be asked
Is it weird that I want to put a lot of thought into my characters for the purpose of making them memorable?
No, of course not.
That’s like the most normal thing I’ve ever heard you say
Though, I think you put a lot of thought in the wrong things (particularly, your build) but that’s also pretty normal
That's a common thing to do yeah, gives your dm a lot more concrete things to work with if they want to integrate your backstory into a campaign
Yes. It's nice to have things in the background that possibly can be worked into the plot.
hey guys my friends are starting a new campaign, my friend loves playing warlock, exclusively warlock, (their willing to play others but they have most fun w them) and often love playing warforged or succubus, do you guys have any suggestions for races? she loves elden ring and warframe, they want to explore outside of warforged but are sorta stuck on what race to do, do you guys have any suggestions? the campaign is homebrew and all we got told is we're gonna explore the land in a flying pirate ship
sorry if this is the wrong place to post, just tell me and ill delete and send elsewhere ^^
a tiefling should work unless they don't exist in your world? unless by succubus you mean tiefling, in which case a half elves gets charisma
Just make sure to remember all of it for the moment when the DM says "Random guy with your clans insignia pulls up"
Same. I am always human until I learned of the Aasimars (back when they could only be humans).
ive found a dnd group 10 minuetes away from my home
epic!!!!
im making a monk/cleric multiclass based on jay walker from ninjago
Would it work if I use true polymorph on someone, then put them in resilient sphere and the remove true polymorph?
When issuing the Craft order to a Workshop in your Bastion, does each hireling craft a different object or do all three work on a single object?
Does fifth edition have crafting rules? If not, I can tell you how it would work in third...
2024 does with the new bastions and mobile bastions.
Yeah, in the 2024 phb there's rules for crafting equipment and nonmagical items
Even without Bastions players can craft if they have the tools, materials, and time
It's hard to say. Level 2 you can definitely challenge them a little more. Level 1 anything can take ya out.
Pack of rats with really nice rolls amd really bad rolls from the party.
There’s 2 fighters a sorcerer a warlock a paladin and a guy who hasn’t decided yet
I mean... not to be basic but if you are unsure
Giant rats can help ya future balance.
They have to clear the giant rats
Cr 1/8 put like 5-7 in there. They only have 7 hp
Listen , I have planned as a first encounter that as theyre being transported as prisoners and are about to be executed, the guards get ambushed by orcs, they then get freed by a terrified guard and are forced to fight their way through the orcs until reinforcements arrive( just until the few orcs are dead)
Can’t they run?
What if...
Party befriends the orcs
Without the orcs the party is gonna get executed... Just sayin
Hahaha. Just plan for that 20% window of the unknown player hahah
I too could try to befriend the abominable yeti that’s currently eating a passerby
Oh idk. I figured they were in prison bout to get executed. Orcs attack the establishment. The prison guards try to free the party to help them not die
Hey, in which channel can I ask questions about DND in general because I'm a total newbie
I think I have planned it so that they get attacked once they reach a village and are just outside of it
I’m not sure yet I have a couple of weeks to prepare
Well maybe let the npc tell them in character. "Orcs take no prisoners" as well as discuss a orcs appetite. You don't have to... but if I was freed from captivity id show appreciation to whatever freed me lol.
The guard freed them
But it could be a "orcs take no prisoners thing"
Supposedly
Hear me out: if you break trinket 42 (8-ounce, glass wine bottle that magically reassembles itself 1 minute after being broken) from wild beyond the witchlight, and then trick a bunch of enemies into eating the shards, it’ll rip through their stomach in 1 minute
What kind of questions?
All kinds
i wanted to ask about plans, so i see 4 slots checked, but isn't it only 2 i can craft at a long rest and keep up a day
I guess you can ask them here, and we can redirect you?
Nah I like your planning and im not tryna sabotage it at all. Im simply saying from a players perspective.
If that guard in front riding the carriage that was just talking trash to me. 20 minutes away from my death..now is wanting my help after im free.
I look to whatever caused him to set me free and I show appreciation. Im also speaking in hypotheticals. You should be good tho.
I could simply change the penalty to life or that they’re on their way to trial
There is a channel called #dnd-newcomers that might be a good place to start.
Thanks
Yes or just put in that tidbit about no prisoners. Some armies don't take prisoners especially in fantasy. ||Witcher scene thats what the grandma said to the child||.
But yeah idk how many orcs are a good balance for level 1 tho. They are hard to balance for.
As in the orcs take no prisoners^
In the campaign we just finished 5 of us fought 4 or 5 goblins I think so I wanna switch it up as a first time dm now
Like your npc guard could say that while scared if pcs think about having tje bright idea to befriend the orcs
Id level em up to 2,3 after first session or few sessions. Just makes it easier for you as the dm to throw stuff at them
Yea after first encounter they always lvl up
Switch it up, give them a dragon as their first encounter. Objective: Survive
wanted to just confirm quickly the rules of artificer 2024
you get 4 Arcane plans
can craft 2 per long rest yes? and they disappear post long rest,
what's the use this feature +4 times per long rest, is it just the ability to swap them out with others
I have a side quest where they fight a green dragon wyrmling
You make 2 and then the next long rest you make 2 more.
That sounds exciting. Anything to do with dragons between level 1-5 sounds like a fun encounter.
Cause level 1 you are definitely baby sitting hahah. Not as in you. Me personally I don't mind killing the players if they do something stupid and have terrible rolls etc. But I hate doing it and would rather do it when they are experienced enough to seek the danger they are getting into. Like they can always take the easier roads but if they seek the more danger roads. Danger comes along with it.
But thats just me, Im too worrisome ima kill level 1s lol up to you and your playstyles tho
So ye, you always can have 2 up, uses are replacements
What about in terms of downtime? or attunements between rest, can manifold tool be attuned to others since they're supposed to disappear per long rest, or is it just up for DM to decide whether it's allowed for Artificer to "uphold" it
i mention manifold tool, but this would essentially be all items that should be attuned to others than the artificer
Boom
You should see when they go into a ruined dwarven mountain base and find a shadow dragon lair later on in the game
First they think the enemy is the guard.
Then they think the enemy ks the orcs.
Then a dragon flys over and sees a bunch of food
Narrate how ya wish^ lol
If I put a dragon like that it’s just gonna turn into the intro for Skyrim
Oh wow... I didn't even think of that
Touche lmfao hahahahahahahaha.
next campaign is just that, the entire skyrim story narratively written, change the names and see how fast everyone catches on
Only 1 of them knows Skyrim as well as I do
he's gonna be staring DAGGERS at you when some NPC tells him he's in whiterun
or the jarl is asking you to help with the dragons
I know
before the game, quickly talk to him privately, YOU ARE NOT TO SAY ANYTHING. PLEASE
and then he catches on
Err... I actually haven't played dnd before. How did you guys find dnd mates?
real life friends got me, but otherwise there's a #find-a-game
I think its vaguely up to the DM on downtime swapping, I'd allow it but reading here it isn't really specific. Idk why it's 4 plans and 2 magic items when usually its 4 plans and for 4 magic items in 2014.
University
In 2014 it was maintaining upkeep on 2 items as well i'm pretty sure
4 infusions learned that could be swapped out
All I'm gonna say is my DM and I read it wrong last time I played artificer. Oops
man, so did mine, I started artificer with Literally NO ONE IN THE GAME KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT IT
i was wrong about infusions, The flavor casting, everything....
I need some help, me and my DM have a plan where I betray the party and have to kill 4 others as a level 15 fighter (they will be around lvl 12)
how would you be in need of help? just ideas on who to focus or what are you looking for? to reason with the moral dilemma?
How to actually pull this off
So here’s the story so far: We start on the island Of Dragonmaw (named for being shaped like a dragons head with wide open jaws), in the kingdom of Baronia , its split into 4 regions: general (mostly human) middle, top left elves, top right dwarves and bottom part orcs( orcs are still wip). The island was once home to many dragons but as of long ago events which I haven’t thought about , the dragons were reduced by a major amount in numbers, but with recent skirmishes and raids from the orcish region into other regions, and the sudden slight resurgence of dragons , the party must investigate the cause behind these events as they scout the land. That’s what I thought about so far
we'd be missing most of the information, such as classes and the like, we don't know what you're facing, what situation it is in, everything
There is a barbarian human cleric kobold Druid human who is a tank and tabaxi rouge
I am a human fighter
It’s in a hall and I got a war horse to help me
Personally I don't fancy your odds. One on four is bad numbers if you're all using PC sheets.
Dam
#dnd-media , perhaps?
oh apologies ill ask there
planning to get a cloak
Is it the Cloak of Billowing?
I have got to get one of those
Our groups barbarian currently has that and a shiny gold scale mail armor of gleaming
actually wait this should go in non dnd
Amusing small homebrew I got the idea of
When Kas is wielding the Sword of Kas it gains the properties of Sword of Sharpness
At least it would have been neat in 2014. Since the new one doesn’t take off limbs.
I've been writing down some variants for enemies
Fair enough, fair enough
The Staff of Silverymoon and Wand of Orcus made me think about magic items that work differently when given to their owners
In my defense, there are a good chunk of people in the party. Meaning I don't get much for versatility, so trying to focus on a sniper-esque build sounded good at the moment...
It still does somewhat, but it will need some investments. In particular, if I can get my hands on a firearm, my effectiveness in combat gets much better
The legend of vox machina dnd show is good i think it my new favorite animated show
Crazy
I like it
What
So
Remember that Mana Point system in my campaign I talked about?
Mhm…….
Yeah
I forgot 5 crucial words that made it so much more unbalanced
Is there a good YouTube channel to learn the lore of dnd . Im trying to understand the world
"Our Wizard prepared Silvery Barbs"
Lol
Silvery barbs is fine. It means no shield, no counterspell, uses a slot, and doesn't even guarantee a result
Unless as a dm your entire plan to challenge the players is to roll a crit
But what about 47 silvery barbs
I mean that is 47 spell slots not being used for dealing damage or shield or utility or anything besides maybe making a hit into a miss
Being able to easily swap between that or whatever else you want with no penalties?
Mind you, this isn't spell slots, this is a mana pool
@zealous otter what's your favorite class
So you're using a house rule
Still though, you only get one reaction a turn
If you don't want to use it for countespell or shield that's a win as a dm
The best part about silvery barbs is that it's inside of a setting specific book. And there is absolutely zero requirement to allow players to use such a spell
It's a fantastic way to use resources and action economy and I fully support my players taking it
I'll quickly bring you up to speed, but the campaign i am in has pretty rules overall, but a few homebrew rules that, while I as a ranger technically benefit from, other classes benefit so much more from
Oops, sorry for the ping...
How would y’all feel about a minor change to the halberd to make it more realistic?
Depends.
What change?
I would only suggest that whatever you're doing have the goal of more fun at the table. Realism isn't what d&d does
The 2 main ones are the aforementioned mana point system (MP points based on number and level of spell slots, so a level 11 wizard has 47 MP (4+6+9+12+10+6))
If it’s just like, more damage types, I already do that in my games
And the second is the Perkin's Crit
Well, since historically it was a multi use weapon due to its head, I would give it the option of doing all 3 kinds of damage: slashing with the axe, piercing with the spike and bludgeoning with the back of it yea
Boop
So Dave, the 2 main issues are that with the MP system, they can simultaneously cast high level spells normally while also being able to cast low level spells for a fraction of the cost. Thus massively increasing versatility and decreasing how vital a long rest is
And our Wizard, Cleric, Bard, and Paladin to a smaller degree all benefit from this significantly
As for Perkins Crit, our Paladin is eating way too good already, but this would be the main course
At level 2, our paladin was dealing close to 50 damage in a single turn because of a javelin divine smite crit (oh, yeah. And despite being 2014 rules, Paladin can smite from a distance)
2d6+4d8+…
Wow they rolled well
Nope
Hm?
Remember, Perkin's Crits
Wrong chat i meant to post in new player
Even then
1d6+4+6 piercing damage
And 2d8+16 radiant damage
So even getting the worst damage numbers possible, thats 29 damage
woah
Bruh
Oh man your still in that game? You have been complaining for days
Where the freak are you getting 2d8 DMG?
Divine smite
Oh what nvm
That looks wholefully wrong somehow
Where is the +6 and +16 coming from
Oh wait no
That is the rule of Perkin's Crits
Me
Nvm
Perkins
I did it.
Tokii gave them the extra damage, I was there I saw
Instead of doubling damage dice, you are adding the maximum possible damage from the regular dice
The Lord of Goofy strikes again
Yeah, I decided to bless them
He does that sometimes
You're welcome
Wouldn’t it be 1d6+4+10 then?
Not so much complaining now. At least, until I remember the mana point system, and the fact we have a wizard with silvery barbs and soon to be counterspell. And probably fireball by now
Modifier apparently only gets applied once
Ic
Everytime you roll a nat 20
I'm there.
Everytime your character dies, I'm also there
No wonder I never see you
I giveth and I taketh
But just to be clear, this is not me complaining about the campaign that much. This is me realizing that these homebrew rules are only going to get more crucial and powerful as we progress
You haven't earned my blessings, yet
I guess that’s fair with the amount of dad jokes I’ve done
I've never liked this, as a player or a DM. Too swingy.
Change your ways, my son
I wonder how well a scientist would be received as a character
Hmmm
Nahhhhh. It’s a-parent that this is part of my identity now
Anyone can be a scientist if they're willing to test a theory
There was another thing I saw online that made crits give (i believe bardic) inspiration to the ones close enough to witness it
Unfriended. Blocked. Reported, even. /j
But yeah. Perkin's crits are already pretty powerful, but this is also in the hands of a Paladin. The one who benefits from this and very lucky rolls the most
In character voice:Well of course, and frankly I find those that just accept answers without questioning or testing them because of being outcasted or being considered a loon to be rediculous
Hold this.
Gently places a pipe bomb in your hands and walks away
And this is on top of a mana point system that allows you to be as versatile or focused with your spells as you want at the same time
Meaning that if our paladin really wanted to, they could, at level 11, cast Divine Smite at the 3rd level 6 times before running out
Well, that was an explosive ending
This device seem to be something akin to a bomb, time to crack it open
We’ll have to C4 next time if HolenLonfi survives
I will for I always have a contingency plan for these matters
Even my death
Do you have one if your steak is overcooked?
Yes
And undercooked?
Yes
Damn they’re good
Uncook it
Un un cook it
does anyone have any recommendations of discords or something i can join to find a group to play with?
That is sort of what I've used in one of my games. Describe the crit and you get to describe your cool thing and throw a heroic inspiration to someone within 30ft. Works fine.
And then as a player at the lgs there's "double exclusively the attack dice, but reroll the d20 and if it's another 20 you one shot the enemy" which feels so bad as a rogue when every caster in the world is like cool I now get X D12 or this many extra d8, and a crit for little old rogue boy is an extra D4 with the promise of the ohk that never happens.
All standard procedures for experimentation, plus it not the first time someone attempted to use my own curiosity to attempt to take my life
this isnt paid right?
Shouldn’t be
okay thank you
Also I do find it strange that people don’t talk to gods more directly, tho most god don’t seem to like a friendly chat, maybe I ask them too many questions
I think it’s because gods are too busy to answer random phone calls
In my setting, the Gods are distant and don't answer anyone. Ever.
Don’t they have an event planer or can’t they set up a meeting with proper scheduling
That’s what the angel secretary is for, and the angel mailing room/help desk actually is the one answering your phone call
Well may I set up a meeting with a god then, for I got something important to discuss with them
I mean maybe idk
Well I encounter some strange matter that I touch somehow created a dimensional door that leads to a location that create anything by mere thought if you stand in it, and I find it to be very important thing to discuss
I imagine gods as CEO's, they aren't going out of their way to speak to a random employee
Maybe if it's like a lesser god or being
In my setting, the Gods have been so distant that fiends and celestials have stepped in to take the place of distant deities.
Or like world leaders. Except they’re even further away than world leaders, because they’re not even in this dimension
Essentially yeah, god's will NOT notice you unless you do some crazy shit
"Hey, you know one of your followers just nuked a country?"
“Pull up the orb I need to see this”
"How did he convince 500 wizards to circle cast?"
"He's a bard dude, that's why I don't accept them as followers"
“He’s a bard dude, that’s why I accept them as followers 😎 “
Nugget, what monstrosity have you released on my campaign??
Which save is easier for monsters to fail: Dex or Wisdom?
I did no such thing!
In general, monsters tend to have weaker wisdom saves. But that’s not a hard and fast rules.
Simply helped a friend out
ok, what about Dex and Con?
Though I still stand by my point about you focusing too much on your build. The best fun you’ll find in dnd is in the roleplay.
Con saving throws are mostly for poison and things involving the body itself. Dexterity is jumping out of the way of fireballs
Of course
My gut says that dex and con saves tend to be the highest among monsters - again in general.
I don’t have any facts or data to back that up though.
My gut says con
I am not an employee
I speak to this pacific god because the others wouldn’t listen to the serious matter currently at hand
If you don’t then I make you
By using the very thing I tried to warn you about
walks off through the dimension door of creation
I need help with this question
Yall ever went through a totally bogus death or TPK?
Fireball
Fortunately not me
Check #dnd-rules
Nah. Most TPKs come from our party being stupid and/or greedy.
I got one-shotted by some demi-god because I was measuring distance to shoot him just in case something happened and the DM said "You wanna shoot him?"
The demi-god picked up my 100 pound party member and threw him at me so hard, it did my full health bar
No saving role or anything
Thats...Extreme. Harsh even. No saves?
No death saves, all I got is "You want your character to live?" from the DM
Well that sounds like it belongs on a r/rpghorrorstories post.
Now that I think about it most of the time we just got instant death in the campaign, never saving rolls
My character died to the party member throw, our cleric died from getting literally erased by death himself, two party members died from an guaranteed hit ravenous void, and one character just ended up killing themselves and leaving the campaign
I should of left that campaign way earlier...
Oh boy do I have a story to tell
Death by DM fiat is one of those “wrong way to run the game” things
My very first game
As a level 1 character
My dm one-shot me with a rhemoraz
Ok wait, he threw a CR 11 creature at a level 1 party?
How many players?
Hi there!! I just got here lol
Oh same!
Yeah I had a 1st session like that when I started dnd
does anyone wanna start a session ive never played and wanna learn
Im writting the second session to my new campaign rn!! And im having a fun time making npcs lol (drawing them)
My best advice: dont get too attached
Except it wasn't a CR11 monster, it was 11 Zombies against a level 1 party of 5 in a hallway
And 1 of said players quit the game
I quit that game soon
"My character is a coward he screams and runs" then dropped call
looking for ppl to play dnd with i havent played before but i get the gist.
As am I
And our Wizard used both his slots on Ray of sickness on a zombie
And he didn't have a damage cantrip
Both of you should check out #find-a-game ,Jolteron, duckduckgoose
To the npcs? Oh yeah I know haha but more often then not im the one who kills them compared to the players haha
Damn
It be like that sometimes
Funniest part was he died instantly the next session
Oh hey I like your Jester pfp! I need to draw her next (I made my Caleb pfp)
And rage quitted
I think the last time I raged out of a campaign was because my dm yelled at me alot
Over connection issues
He started threatening a couple of Paladins so one paladin backhanded him
Omg thats so annoying? And rude??
Instakilled him
My biggest campaign issue is playing with 7 people that are all my family. They all are murder hobos 😭
My longest running group currently is super fun
Our forever dm (by choice/need) is an english major
After the holidays ima be restarting my Monday game hopefully
Nice!
And hopefully get some more games started
Tomorrow im gonna shounen paladin all over the place

Jokes aside critical role and Jocat have made how to videos
Thank you
Every day I wish we got some of the more substantial changes that the playtest for 2024 had. I wish we had Class Groups and Arcane/Divine/Primal spell lists and standardized Subclass progression across the classes.
Would have improved rogue's progressiojn a lot
Roguein' it
I put the caltrops in a oil jar
I put caltrops in my caltrops so I can caltrop while I caltrop
I stepped on a piece of d4 shaped ice today
I also cast enlarge on the caltrops
All that got scrapped when they chose to make it just an update instead so they could release it for the 50th anniversary.
1d4 piercing+1d4 cold damage
I don't think they got rid of that for legitimate playtest result reasons
Flammable caltrops
Would Vampiric Touch be balanced if it did a d12 instead of a d6 for damage?
If not, how could it be buffed?
That made of wood
Tell me about it.
Okay, do you all want the good news or bad news?
Both at the same time
Bad news, the dream of Ranger/Fighter is dead
Good news, Ranger/Rogue is going to be so much better
Okay?
What you making fighter ranger for?
Because honestly ranger is fine by itself plus it already get weapon mastery and fighting style
2014
Oh okay
I was trying to make Fighter Ranger as my best attempt (at the moment) of a sniper build. Problem is, combat and exploration wise, Perkin's Crits made me basically a poorly stocked vending machine of food, water, and a few Cure Wounds... vs a Paladin sitting on top of a surplus of nuclear warheads
For context, our Paladin got close to 3 shotting the boss in the Death House for Curse of Strahd: back to back divine smite crits with a ranged javelin (homebrew rule allows for ranged smites despite being 2014)
Why not just use Warlock with the 120 feet Eldritch Blast Eldritch Invocation?
So Perkins crit max damage dice then roll for normal damage
Mhm
Maybe it not the Perkins crit that causing you to feel inadequate
Yeah. So Paladin crit was 1d6+10 piercing damage and 2d8+16 radiant damage
If you wanted to play a sniper character, why not take some levels in rogue for sneak attack bonuses?
We already have 3 spellcasters in our team. I wanted to be ranger because I wanted to try out a sniper build
Enter my soon to be Ranger/Rogue plans...
Got it
Ranger/rogue can be pretty good, i'm not sure how it is in 5e (as ive never played ranger) but I hear gloom stalker pairs well with rogue
Ah, didn’t you have a weapon that has extra damage, also what about your hunters mark?
Specifically, I'm going with Assassin Rogue
Assassin is quite fun
Remember. This is also Perkin's Crit
Synergises very well with gloomstalker
I think sneak attack would be overall more beneficial than action surge for a sniper character
Okay
looking for a dm
already posted amd cant post
If people aren't responding then you probably should just wait
For level 11 (5 Ranger Gloomstalker, 6 Assassin Rogue) with a hunting rifle, Favored Foe, and Hunter's Mark, my average first turn damage will be... just about 300 piercing damage
I think you've sorted your damage issue then lol
So a Perkin's Crit with a 1d10 Longsword would deal 10+1d10+Str?
Oh, yeah. And all attacks, assuming I also get surprise in (very likely with a +13 Stealth and +23 with PWT) will be made with advantage and a +11 hit modifer. I will also have +15 to my initiative
Terrorising your DM at that point
This'll be revenge, then
Holy crap
One of my players is a ridiculously beefy goliath fighter and I've never managed to down him in combat
I think I gave you too many ideas
Our first boss fight was terrible for me
The 4 main and possibly only attacks landed were 2 back to back divine smite crits, crit on Guiding Bolt, and a crit fail save for Bard's Dissonant Whispers
My 3 turns? 12 attack roll after sharpshooter misses. Turn 2, 12 is a miss. Turn 3, landed a hit without Sharpshooter only to do 7 piercing damage
Imma be honest I don’t think the DM deserves this
There is one other problem
I made a figurative deal with the devil
Just to get average stats compared to the party (84 base total vs 2 88s, a 90, a 92, and 94)
So this is not terrorizing. This is preparation
I've literally never seen over a 90
We rolled dice for the stat totals
What were you guys fighting
The way to challenge them is not to hold back, because player are tactical goblins this is the truth
It was some esque creature in the Death House for Curse of Strahd
Yeah I gave up on being nice in my newest campaign and TPK'd the 2nd combat (accidentally). Thankfully they were only taken prisoner
Good
Be fair but challenging
And don’t beef up monsters hp
Used ambushes, traps, all things that can mess up players plans
Yes. And for my attack at level 11, it'll be a hunting rifle sneak attack crit with Hunter's Mark and Favored Foe
And Piercer
3d10+4d6+1d4+63 piercing damage
Your damage drops to the floor after the first turn tho btw
Not bad, but nowhere NEAR the first turn
Sharpshooter, Bonus Action Steady Aim
Remember, that isn't my first turn damage
That is my critical hit damage. First turn is just 3 guaranteed crits if i land attacks on surprised opponents
Guarenteed?
Ah
You also have advantage
Assassin subclass. I get guaranteed crits on surprised opponents, and I am able to make those attacks with advantage if they haven't made their turn on that round yet
Which, good luck outspeeding someone with +15 initiative
This one hasn’t considered the fact that Surprised kills any chance of outspeeding them
Me?
Only if you surprise them
How’d you get +15 initiative?
At level 11? 3 +5 bonuses, from Dex, Wisdom, and Alert feat
Wisdom shouldn’t boost initiative
Gloomstalker
Oh
Dread Ambush adds Wisdom modifer to Initiative
My dnd character probably likes chocolate ice cream with cookie dough
I'm guessing you also have the alert feat
he said that
I will by level 9
Also, I presume you will need good stealth checks to surprise the enemy
Finals means no dnd for me this week
Yeah i'm pretty sure surprise is a stealth check vs passive perception
Passive Perception being the DC?
Yep
Well, have I got news for you
Goblin passive perception is 9, so you need a 9+ to surprise them
At level 11, I will have +13 in Perception and a +13 in stealth (that I can also make +23 if I use PWT)
So surprising my enemies will be often while the reverse is unlikely
Your dm is going to absolutely adore you
Oh. More nails in the coffin
No disadvantage from either being in melee range or going past normal range PLUS ignoring half and three quarters cover
Yeah. I'm going to be living the dream as an addict of high damage crits
2014 build?
Yep
Who would have thought that the best advice for not being able to beat figurative one trick ponies is to join them?
High double prof perception + alert is so funny
And the only reason ive played ranger
Yeah, looking back at Gloomstalker
And the Perkin's Crit
I no longer doubt Gloomstalker
Drakewarden is also a definite reason to play it
For sure
How broken would Illusionist Wizard be if Illusionary Reality could make things that hurt people?
Yes
But Perkin's Crits for this campaign means that every first turn, so long as I have first in initiative and surprised enemies
Drakewarden is a cool subclass
I effectively have 3 piercing damage attacks that have the relative strength of PWK
Even if you can circumvent it by performing grand theft dragonnel
Is this the well known Gloomstalker Assassin nova damage build for 2014?
First encounter of this campaign and the DM is having us fight Quicklings and Shadows. Lol we're in danger.
Entangle them if you have a Druid or Ranger. Pretty sure Quicklings are nimble, but not strong. Then a lot of their stuff stops working if they have 0 speed.
Web
They're much more likely to succeed on the save against Web.
Oh I already got a spike growth ready to go lol, just waiting for our break to end
I kind of think Entangle might be better, but let us know how that works out for you.
With Perkin's Crits, it seems
But what's nova?
I dislike calling it that because I'm pretty sure Chris Perkins didn't invent those.
They were called "Chunky Crits." And "nova damage" generally refers to super high burst damage that you can't repeat very frequently.
Then call it the "3/4 PWK bullets every first round"
Term for a BIG MASSIVE SUPER MASSIVE DAMAGE
Chunky Crits is what I'll call them.
Fair enough. But do keep in mind: critical hits are very much still possible
