Also grappling them.
Sounds like monk is the way to go, since there are a lot of problems with artificers and necromancers it seems
Really felt like a shrug and add whatever feature
they can, but especially the push isn't as good as other push mechanics
With shadow monk 24 you can just move it wherever at the start of your turn. You could also do typical silly things like stunning and grappling
Playing one rn, I usually take my first turn to run across the map and beat up the mage/archer while he’s blind
Plus many of the magic items with those restrictions were actively better to give someone that is not the artificer anyway as well.
If you have the new Forge of the Artificer, the new armorer sounds really fun. You can make yourself a dreadnought armor and make yourself Large and hit enemies around with a wrecking ball.
these are also fair points but it relies on a majority of your party building around this mechanic and it can also really be at the detriment of the turns of other players if they do need to see
Actually that's the one i considered the least. Being a big bulky guy isn't really something i want to play rn, especially in a party with 3 close range martial tanks
Eberron more than steampunk is really Aetherpunk
Not sure what the attitude is for. There is no more steam tech in eberron than there is in the forgotten realms. Less generally speaking honestly. As in, it very largely does not exist.
Its magic, not tech. Thats quite literally one of the entire points of eberron.
Literally every machine in Eberron is magic powered, I dunno what you want to hear, but yeah, that's it.
You are unfortunately demonstrating exactly my point
This is like saying shadowrun isn’t cyberpunk dystopia because the tech is mostly magic
Specifically dragon magic powered
3 armor sets. One for range, one for front line support, and one for being extra large. The ranged one is nice because it nullifies disadvantage all good armors have.
^ showcasing a fundamental misunderstanding of the setting
It’s still the same genre
Jokes on you!
I don't even know what Shadowrun IS!
Imagine dnd but cyberpunk, you now have shadowrun
And people wonder why people don’t like Eberron when this is the wild claims thrown about it
A fundamental principle of the Eberron setting is quite literally "magic instead of tech"
Also you can lend your armor sets to your teammates. They can be a Large sized dreadnought swinging a wrecking ball.
it's where you gotta run away from the shadows of course
I see. I'll consider it, though being iron man isn't really my thing i don't think. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hello, i herd people talking about Eberron, i like the setting but i swear my friends just dont wanna dm it
Eberron isn't steampunk.
It's magi-tech.
It's using magic to make technological advancements.
I understand that the mechas and robots and guns are powered by magic. They’re still mechas and robots and guns, idk what to tell you
Can you make multiple sets?
They don't even have guns, its wands.
Arcana-punk?
“They don’t even have guns” have you read artificer?
mechas and robots and guns aren't really staples of the steampunk genre more than any other genre. They exist in steampunk, sure, but they exist in plenty of other genres too.
The artificer xane with Tasha, not eberron
Only one set I believe.
So I would appreciate if you cut the attitude just because you are being corrected over your fundamental misunderstanding of the setting
Not in medieval fantasy
Everron just expanded it
Oof i see
have you read the part where they make a Wand/Staff/Rod their Arcane firearm?
- firearm
The class that doesn't have guns?
Literally just said firearm
Technically they have cannons 😅
Which they aren’t
If we're talking Artillerist
Flame throwers
artificers have artillerists which are just guns with feet
they've got wands and magic yes
Cannons AREN'T guns.
Forgotten Realms & similar DnD settings isn't necessarily typically medieval fantasy either, DnD is more of a rennaisance / high fantasy setting that 100% has mechas & guns. The core rule books include both guns and robots.
Touche
Its not even an actual cannon - its a magical creation
Hey guys I’ve gotta play tmmrw and I’m gonna be DM but I’ve never played before and tbh idk how the game works I know how the basic things work like what races and like intelligence Strength wisdom but don’t know how to fill the character sheet like where do we get the characters level or level of dexterity or intelligence yknow I saw someone use a book but don’t have it so,and the rest of the sheet to me like hit dice? Death saves?spells? Armor class where do I get these do I need like a whole ass manual or can I use a default like 5 and as we go we get higher level and how do levels work is it per each role of dice or dyou have to get a specific number and add it up
The forgotten realms unironically has more actual "steam" tech than Eberron
It says cannon in the book I believe. I'm too lazy to pull up dndbeyond.
Yes its called a cannon but its not a literal cannon
Recommend reading the entirety of the core rule book back and fourth
Like the rules on the server or an actual book
I think they're more frustrated with your hostile demeanor
Yeah FR and Greyhawk actively have more robots and guns than Eberron has by a lot
They're free rules avalible online on DND beyond
Shoutout to the Android and Cyborg stat blocks
I have no obligation to be polite toward bullish rude people
It’s not a lot is it?
It's more then enough and explains everything you asked
There was no "bullish" behavior or anything going on. I literally just corrected your statement and you gave immediate attitude
I'd buy the DMG. The DMG actually has a lot of tips for rookie DMs.
^
Obviously the PHB is a must buy
Is there anything from phb the core rule book doesn't have except subclasses and some spells?
A fair bit
DMG focused stuff.
i think like, the entire armor table is redacted
Oof
the free rules have one subclass per class, only 3 backrounds only a few feats, less than half the monsters, but most of the spells
The free rules contains the entire weapons & armour table as it exists in the PHB
I read the rules for my specific class that I always go for and that just kinda confused me more cause for each level there’s a +2 for example where do you put that like do u write it down in ur notebook I know there’s a notebook used while playing, and there are sorcery points again where is this going
But they contain all the rules you need to run dnd right?
oh what? i remember i tried looking for it on roll 20, which i have no books on that site, and the armor table was just nonexistent
yeah you can do perfectly fine with the free basic rules, give it a try
That might be roll20 being weird, the free rules on DnDB are what I'm going off of
No.
The basic rules are definitely sufficient for starting the game generally
it has all the rules, just not all the options
(they are not)
I see, makes sense
do what u want cuz a pirate is free
And I heard u need a map too do u really need it or can u like make one diy map not based on any irl thing just drawing squiggly lines with nature rivers etc
you don't need maps, especially not world maps.
You can graph out a couple of A4 papers
a map of the world is definitely not required.
battlemaps are also optional
Quick rule is that if it contains anything more than the SRD which is essentially the Basic Rules, then it's not legal. Only a few platforms have licenses to sell that content digitally
Battlemaps are what you might want, but even those can be easily made with a whiteboard and some dry erase markers
Hokrun owes Artanza for saving him btw /j
I see, will keep it in mind moving forward!
I wouldn't really waste time on a map of the world at all until you're underway with some invested players
waste time is a stretch but there's other priorities you have early on
Alright where'd that guy go...
What guy?
the one ahan gave my money to
Wait, what-
there's a tier list of which of the party members should have a gun and hokrun is at the bottom
DON'T shoot him, please.
Are the magic items the artificer makes good for support?
I think Artanza would be the most trust worthy with it
I can't see who else In the party wouldn't brandish a gun at someone and be like
"Hey, look at this!"
EXACTLY like Hokrun did, by the way
I cannot disagree with this i definitely did it
Eh
"Hey, Detective!"
Reaches for gun
I see
Is their damage decent?
this gun is such a silly bit I'm so excited to commit to it for far longer than I should
I'm deciding if I wanna take sharpshooter, gunner, or weapon master next
Eh
The class is more focused on having a lot of options
Preferably
None
I'd love if you just put the gun down, Hokrun...!
So they're mainly utility?
That is not happening
Damnit.
I do
everyone should always just have a dagger
Oh..
Have I not seen it?
So fun little fact: Hokrun canonically is always holding a dagger and simply doesnt use it
if you dont have any daggers, youre not an adventurer
Daggers are my martial kensei weapon
Kensei monks, when they use an unarmed strike as the attack action while holding a martial kensei weapon, get +2 AC
Artanza's only Melee weapon is Shocking Grasp 🙏
I really went dual daggers for my Astarion on bg3, because Spy tf2 never left my mind when I was building him
so for hokrun it is optimal to be holding a dagger and never use it
ok i guess if you have a melee cantrip, thats excusable
He's definitely the type of guy who'd say that would be your mother too
but i still think you should have a dagger
I have six so I can share
yes give a dagger to your party members who were too neglectful to bring one
He's a Knowledge Cleric Tortle and doesn't have the best physical stats, but has Wizard Magic initiate and he's gonna make damn good use of it
yes but its a dagger
Hokrun; Apparently he's the mom friend now :)
Daggers felt like such a versatile weapon that I'd bring it along regardless of the situation anyways for flavor
you need to bring a dagger if you are an adventurer
I hear the back is the best spot to place it XD
Like I'll just pretend my PC would need to cut something real fast without using a giant sword or axe for it
the best spot to place it is not the back
I'll put a dagger in Artanza's back
that would be your mother
Listen, Man, I'm already the parties Grandpa there 😭
so mom friend is an open position?
Indeed, and now he's here to beep us!!
ok but genuinely the best place is the front where the heart is
Also, you folks should try playing a grandfather figure to your party if you haven't, it's great
this old guy will not survive the campaign
Elminster Jr at your service
Grandfather/mother
it's funny because I also played a grandpa figure recently and it was completely different vibes
I fully expect Artanza to die when we get to The Dungeon of the Mad Mage, appreciate his kindness while you have it
Hmm I should try a Fathomless Tortle Warlock
I might bring in a Ranger if he dies, perhaps, idk
I would so sincerely love if one by one all our characters die and so by the end of the campaign the party has been ship of theseused into heroic good aligned PCs
Or an Eladrin Archfey Warlock
Eladrin Archfey sounds fun
Teleport spam
the enemy fighting the eladrin: "Why are there so many leaves/snowflakes, I just had this place cleaned!"
Which characters in our party do you see most likely sacrificing themselves for the others?
"I keep the maid employed"
artanza and that is it
He goes the path of master Oogway
"Jokes on you, i have the zombies do it" jkjk though that would be a funny interaction
"My time has come..."
"Yeah and I'm sure they do a good job."
I mean realistically you only need a gelatinous cube to clean your dungeon
I can't wait for him to get to level 5, because that's when he's gonna become more of a Melee Combatant (Spirit Gaurdians)
Hokrun at level 5 might be fun because that's when I get to mix guns and fists
I don't think kensei is the best choice mechanically but it is so fun
Wait until magic weapons are involved and you can use "Sharpen the Blade" on them
You've got a +3 Vicious Shortsword now!
Sharpen the blade is also ki point sink
(and bonus action sink)
That is true, but Short Rests
If your dm lets you have one
i also can once a day regain all my focus points when i roll initiative
Considering I can give my party a short rest whenever (once per long rest) with Prayer of Healing because I'm a Cleric.
Also 2024 Monk gets a good handful of Ki back once a day without any short rests
Okay fair, but just saying
It's not like Short Rests are as hot of a commodity in 2024 rules as they were 2014 it seems.
Usually 1 or 2 Short Rests can get you through a long day as well
Yeah, but just don’t spam sharpen the blade
Plus its a only a short rest, an hour is usually fine after all.
an hour is usually pretty doable somewhere in an adventuring day unless something real bad is going down
at that level you usually have +1/+2/+3 items anyways
You won't have to worry anyway, my Monk BBG, I'll always have Prayer of Healing prepared
thanks bbg
Once, due to a super lucky roll, I had players get a +2 weapon at level 2.
Yet you have flame tongue getting buffed to plus 3 by sharpen the blade
Plus why not both
Like a plus 3 weapon and a non plus magic weapon
You can't buff items which have a +1/+2/+3 with sharpen the blade
and also I'm not ever gonna be dual wielding weapons
or well, not weapons that I'll be using
after getting back into 40k and the talk of blades has me wanting to make an emperor's children inspired PC
FOR THE EMPEROR!
I meant you can use a plus 3 weapon (non attunement) when you don’t want to use up your ki points and then you can use magic weapons without a plus against particular enemies
Fun fact, in previous editions there was a race of people made of Blades.
Part of Planescape
They should bring them back
The Bladelings from Acheron.
death to the false emperor and praise the dark prince
They'd have to actually take planescape seriously again, and I don't see that happening any time soon
i love me some planescape, the 5e box set has gotten so much use in my games
Tyrannic screeching
Yeah the 5e box set for planescape is soooo good!
Also the point of sharpen the blade is to use it on magic weapons without good effects but no plus
I need to run more with it, it was wicked fun the last few times,
40k crossover when?
Like you can use on a weapon of warning, flame tongue, dragon wing long bow, weapon of wounding, and other examples
honestly I could see it with sigmar, though with Soulbond it makes that harder
though it does make me think of if the chaos gods existed in the Faerun pantheon, what would happen?
I still love the addition of 2 sentences on rules on how to fight the Lady of Pain
I'm new to d&d and idk where to start
They can so much problems then Lord AO pushes them out with a broom
I thought it was four words. "you don't, you die"
And Mystra likely dies again somehow
It was “on the first attempt you are filled with horrible pain beyond any other and drop to 1 Hp”
Actually cartographer plus dancer sound like a fun time
The second one was the “you die, no god or wish can save you”
ngl now I'm thinking the full possibility of chaos in dnd, there's a lot of questions to it since technically there's already pre-existing gods to certain parts of the chaos gods portfolios
Also chaos itself is an “entity” in DnD too
So much inniative
It’s one of the four big powers of the multiverse after all.
Wait what is the ultimate going first party
Slaanesh vs Graz'zt over the domain of excess
Everyone is a Harengon
If you want insight into Role Playing the Lady of Pain. Troy Denning' Pages of Pain is Narrated by Her from her POV as she watches someone in Sigil.
Human fighter, Halfling Rogue, Elf Wizard, Dwarf Ranger (cooking tools proficiency)
then a tabaxi fighter a bit later on
No dancer bard or cartographer artificer
You read my mind
The quest is to get their Human Cleric back too
I hope they succeed
Without losing more
I’m making a Dungeon Meshi reference btw for clarity sake
Oh, that explains the dwarf with cooking proficiency
Have yall ever ruled 2014 ranger to just be a prep caster like Paladin? To buff them?
no, they have preformed great as is
Same as Urizt
The ranger spell list is bad enough that letting them prep different spells each long rest doesn't really change anything.
i dont often have rangers change their prepared spells even in 2024 rules
Unless you know exactly what you're going to need that day and that is something different from your standard loadout, you're just gonna run Hunter's Mark, Entangle, Cure Wounds, and Pass Without Trace. Because those are always useful.
I honestly completely forget that some classes can only change spells whenever they level up 😭
In every campaign I’ve ran I let them change it every long rest
It's a little funny how convoluted Wizard spell selection is.
My problem with Ranger is the classic characters used as examples... aren't Rangers. Aragorn? Fighter. Wolverine? Barbarian. Robin Hood? Rogue.
But I suppose it puts a necessary control on just how good the Wizard list is.
Aragorn is definitely a ranger.
The class was basically built for the purpose of playing as him.
Except it doesn't.
He never used a bow, and while he did track, it was the only thing he did that was "ranger-like". Even his healing wasn't because he was a Ranger, but because he was a King.
Ranger =/= bow
Ranger does not mean ranged combat
No animal companions (a major factor of early edition Ranger
Nothing that Rangers do except tracking
Everything else he did was more Fighter
you are defintly overthinking it
someone that ranges over long distances does not get by without fighting, i actually thing its more of a disservice that the Fighter is called that still when really everyone in dnd does fight
Well, it's expected.
Long ago, Ranger was a fighter Sibclass
Aragorn is 100% a ranger.
Even only changing 1 spell on LR would be great
Robin Hood is at the very least a multiclass of ranger/rogue. (minus the spellcasting)
Rangers also fight. I could see Boromir as a fighter, sure, Aragorn is quite literally a ranger in the text of the book
I’d say he’s all rogue, but that’s only my thought
Name a class ability Rangers have that Fighters don't that Aragorn ever did besides tracking.
“Name a Ranger thing that Aragorn did except for that Ranger thing”
Rangers were the lawmen of the rural areas or Foresters they were handymen, yeomen, they patrolled the dense woods. This area was called a Range.
Therefore. Rangers
"Hey take this martial leaning half caster, and take away all the martial stuff, and the one thing that makes them different and then name what makes them different"
Roving, feral senses, relentless hunting, Arragorn did all that for sure
Robin Hood in most portrayals doesn't fit very well into the class system.
I agree with this. He never really has does outstanding features
He's a gentleman thief who is also the best archer in England. I guess...a rogue that has spec'd into lots of charisma and charisma-based skills?
It's also with Aragorn its most likely leaning on his movie version and not novel version.
Swashbuckler
Bardcher without spells
I can see that working for him, actually
gotta remember, movies and literature is not a 1 to 1 copy of dnd, not even the DND Movie was, The bard main charicter never obviosly cast any spells, but oh man did he inspire and influence
He doesn't really sneak around or infiltrate or any other classic rogue things.
robin hood doning a disguise and infiltrating the tournament, yep not sneaky at all
The classes themselves are not things in world. Either even in most official settings.
this also
Yes, if you walk up to a guy and tell them “I’m a level 9 fighter” they’re going to be confused
Idk, a lot of the settings I've seen pretty clearly are conscious of the class system even if they aren't allowed to explicitly say it. Faerun, as far as I can tell, just plain uses the class names to describe skill sets.
Because class names are usually derived FROM skill sets/professions?
Sometimes. But a Barbarian does not always describe a Barbarian class.
A Barbarian could very well be a paladin from a place that's considered wild and barbaric, like Scotland.
Robin Hood feels like a 100% rogue
Take the Uthgardt Barbarians of the north. If you gave stats to all members of the Sky Pony Tribe. They would not all be Barbarians. But they would all be referred to as Barbarians.
In 5e2024 Does initiative count as D20 test? Like if roll 1 on initiative, does Luck from Halfling traits reroll it?
It does
IIRC a d20 test is only ability checks, saving throws, and attack rolls
Initiative rolls are just an important Dexterity check.
I’m playing a hexblade warlock, since the hexblade patron is one that creates sentient weapons, would it work if this warlock dies if the sentient weapon begins to puppet his body?
You have a point there
Initiative notably does not state it is a d20 Test like other d20 tests in the 2024 PHB.
Does the class feature say it can do that
Well I’m thinking it be as a new character pretty much.
So you might find some push back, but personally I’d count it as one
I'm not being flippant or silly there, the rules for initiative read "every participant rolls Initiative: they make a Dexterity check that determines their place in the Initiative order".
And the rule for d20 tests says it encompasses ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws.
Ah I see it now! Interesting the Rule glossary doesn’t add that detail.
Lucky should apply to almost any d20 roll, except the weird edge cases where the DM wants you to roll on a random table or something.
I was having a conversation with a friend and it had me thinking, does lycanthrope technically have limits in regards to who it can infect PC race wise?
I wonder what would happen if a cleric or paladin of rather Asgorath or Tiamat would encounter a chromatic dragon
really depends on the connection but I could see the cleric/paladin giving reverance
How two barbarian with the same subclass can be different gameplay wise
Try picking different feats to move to other play styles
Also weapon choices
Nvm misread the question, different weapons and feats yea
One barbarian could be going full greataxe with GWM to maximise being damage, but the other can be using weapons with sap and using the brutal strike options to try go for a debuffing style too
Feats, magic items, racial and background options and weapon choices are usually it
i always forgot about magic items
Like Ancestral guardians in story and gameplay would be so much different compared to a Berserker
One hits like a mountain and the other protects
A lot of people do, that’s why there’s the caster vs martials debate /hj
-# Nobody start it now /lhj
Yeah the Caster vs Martial divide is torn apart when you just use magic items in games
Or bring up any pillar of play. Or actually long adventuring days
Its all in the RP
thats sad
im doing two barbarian with the fanatic subclass for my campaing but i cant really think in a way to them being different in gameplay without homebrew
Zealot is a pretty fanatic subclass (it’s called a Zealot after all)
You could go good cop bad cop with the zealot of the gods part
I'm always thinking about them. I'd have to restrain myself from handing them out like candy even at level 1.
I find too many magic items is better for the players than too little
As for whether or not it’s better for the DM that’s another question :)
Could always scale the enemies to be harder in response too
Powerful weapons for powerful enemies
Good point
do you prefer have enemys initiative as one group or indidual?
hello
If they share a stat block they share an initiative is how I run it
i didn't know izutsumi was so racist wtf
she keeps calling laios's party members slurs
who/what are you talking about
izutsumi
catgirl thief from delicious in dungeon
maybe you meant to post in #non-dnd-topics
ur right ur right
oh. I don't watch too many cartoons these days. but yeah the off topic channel is the best place for non D&D stuff
oh sry for the ping
It’s a neat Anime with similarities to D&D
Mainly because it was based on the game Wizardry which is based on D&D
D&D but monsters "drop" (become) rations
oh I am familiar with it by name just not the characters in it
Gotta appreciate a party where the Human Fighter is considered the weirdest person in the party
have you met humans? some of them get pretty weird
The human is usually the weirdest in my parties every time
I think I know the answer but I would still like to ask. In the mighty nein, we see the mage characters like Caleb use glyphs for their magic. Is there a canonical equivalent or is that just flavour?
yo waht is better for like a quick and sneaky rogue arcane trickster or asassin
what level do you think youll get to?
assassins has 2 perks
1: surprise autocrit which is actually really hard to get working unless the DM regularly lets you solo-sneak around to surprise someone
2: infiltrating places with fake id etc, which only matters once you are high level and only if the DM actively constructs scenarios where this is possible
i would recommend not playing assassin unless the DM homebrews surprise attack, or works with you to make scenarios where your class matters
o
arcane trickster is always decent
thief is actually the best one for what you ask i think
i am new to d&d an i already made friends and we are makign our char but we are all new sooo
ive played assassin twice myself and it was completely useless the first time
then fun the second time but only because the DM basically just let me get the autocrit on any "surprising" attacks going by flavour
has anyone played b4 the lost city
is the DM new too? id recommend not picking assassin then unless you homebrew surprise to allow it to happen whenever you get a cool rogue moment attack in
we dotn have a dm yet
important note: once per combat only or youll just autocrit constantly
then i wholeheartedly recommend not going assassin
thief is good because you have 2 bonus actions
bonus actions include hiding, running further, and running away without catching the attack enemies can make on you when you flee
ow ok
it also includes other things like coating your blade with poison i think
thief is generally the best rogue subclass for sneaky guy i think, but arcane trickster seems fun if you want magic
Assassin works as a basic “default” subclass, but compared to others it’s not too good
btw maybe sum extra info about my char its a red dragonborn
Thoughts on B1 — In Search of the Unknown?
i'll prob use arcane trickster bc i think it would be interesting
Thats Somatic components being visualized. In D&D there are express instances of glyph-based magic (Giant Runes are a prominent example) but for the most part, people don't produce glowing rings and letters before casting magic.
Ah ok. Thank you. I figured that was the case but I still wanted to ask hoping I was wrong
Alright perhaps a weird question and not sure if heres the right place to ask but im wondering. My handwriting is pretty ass to the point where sometimes its hard to read. Id like to print something instead but still make it look natural, but im having trouble finding stuff that replicates the inconsistencies of human writings
i think basic subclasses should be the ones that do something, but nothing flashy, but frequently in normal play
assassin is the opposite
it will almost never take effect and requires highly specialised DMing to make actually do anything
i think since im asking here its obvious but this is intended for a letter for my dnd campaign
unless 24 changed it to be better i dont know that
That is a good point. The assassin gives really only 1 thing for newcomers to use and it’s only once per combat
whats the one thing?
if you mean surprise, i gotta say it almost never happens unless the DM homebrews surprise
thats the whole problem with it to be honest
All they did was make it easier to use assassinate, but also make it be a straight damage bonus instead of a crit
Assassinate.
Fortunately in 2024 it’s no longer tied to surprised
triggering a surprise attack is so hard in team play because
1 youre not always gonna be able to sneak in alone because the party wants to play
2 same thing but because the party sucks at stealth
3 same thing but because you wanna talk first and stuff because youre not murderhobos
4 because if their initiative comes up before yours, you just cant do it
thats very good, then i see why you call it a basic class yeah. though thief is more basic i think
Fortunately 2024 fixed all but the last one
i actually really like assassin in 2014 but its entirely dependant on the DM building the world around you and imo homebrewing the surprise thing
They’re both the “default” rogue subclasses in my mind
Yeah it is very DM dependant. But also being surprised isn’t homebrew
no no i meant the DM has to homebrew when you get it imo
basing it on actual surprise is just so oof
Still not homebrew, it’s just a choice of the DM
oh is it?
huh i thought surprise was by RAW a specific thing with people not expecting combat and not having gotten a turn yet
my DM would let me get the assassin hit even when just using a creative way of hitting someone unexpectedly
mid combat you know? it just made it so i actually got a use out of my subclass
Yeah, I agree with that
for example, i eventually got the ability to teleport 30ft mistystep
Just bought my very first Player's Handbook, and I even got the new Artificer book! Now I just need a DM guide and a Monster Manual, and I'm set 😁
if i did that, i could get my 1/combat crit for example if the enemy wouldnt expect that
other things are stuff like using tremors to confuse blindfighting monster and jumping at it with a good athletics check so it didnt see the hit coming
its just "get creative and ill give you it" i think thats the best way to DM for an assassin if you run a combat campaign
Yoooo
Guys is there any like goof free to use dnd websites or apps to start playing with? I never played the game and I want to get into it
Hi
Thx
i use owlbear rodeo to run maps with tokens for creatures like players and enemies etc
i use a character sheet PDF that is freely available (watch out for which edition you wanna play)
i use discord bot avrae for dice rolls when not using my own real dice
i use discord vc to talk to my players/DM
you dont need much to play dnd to be honest
Tried it. I don’t like it
I once had a player swear by it but I’d constantly have to help him sort stuff that wouldn’t have been an issue with almost any other site
I use it weekly and have become pretty fond it of. There is a learning curve but it does work pretty well.
Ok, thanks a lot!
i played a dungeon one time
i would rather use owlbear over roll20
Did you also fight a dragon?
it had a room with a magic mirror that teleported you to an identical room halfway across the dungeon, and it also had a room full of pools that each had a different type of liquid. I remember one was full of acid and another was full of dry ice. I also remember we fought a slime in this room.
There also ended up being a trap floor that put us in a lower level with natural cavernous walls.
Has anyone else played this dungeon?
call it generic but i love the "i'm going to outlive all of my friends" internal conflict for elf characters
Never, but it sounds cool
yeah it was pretty fun ngl
google said it might be "b1 search of the unknown"
I think there used to be premade dungeons and campaign books in the 80s you could buy?
Not a problem in my campaigns, I made some lore in my setting that elves can naturally, and peacefully pass away when they choose to 😎
It might just be something your DM made though
True. I got a knife in it as loot, it was enchanted, all wounds it inflicted could only be healed by time and not magic. Which kinda is OP for level 1.
"i do not vibe with this world anymore. goodbye."
We also got a cloak that made the wearer immune to all weather effects
Pretty much. But I just made it as a way for elves to peacefully pass away with their loved ones
awww that's actually kinda sweet
I called it the “final trance”, where they enter a trance and see the memories of their life flashing before them, before they fade away
Oh, lol, its my character.
Except it's not just friends but 10 whole generations of descendants by their human children.
"oh them? they're my great great great great great great great great grandparent."
"why are they.. alive?"
omg imagine seeing ur grand grand grand grand grand grand children and constantly being reminded of ur deceased mortal lover🥹 💔
Lol yup. Those whose lives he's actually present in (hard to be a meaningful figure in the lives of dozens of kids at a time) just call him grandpa.
thats probably why elves are so introverted in Lotr
He's absolutely terrified of dying and that suddenly being the end of all memory of literally hundreds of loved ones.
how come we never see quarter elves? or eighth elves?
because thats weird and a pain to mechanize
That would really bloat the character options beyond reason.
After two generations any elf traits are breeded out and youre just human
I feel like they said it as a joke
"here's my 64th orc paladin"
Don’t get me wrong those are valid reasons though
But in terms of inheritance I do keep track of that stuff.
the real question is, what if a half-elf and elf mate? 3/4 elf?
an elf
As a result of that drift, grandpa elf counts among his "grandkids" full humans, dwarves, orcs, etc.
there was a whole conversation about half elves in #dnd-lore , might wanna go through that
has anyone done a swtor campaign
A what now
You heard him
I can’t recall running a swtor campaign but I think I played in one /lhj
im making delicious macaroni and cheese right now, hopefully no brussel SPROUTS sneak into it
Ohhhh
those are good if made right
I’ve heard there’s a dnd system about Star Wars
SW5e
Yes, that, Ty
You don't? I have had many
Yall ik i normal should ask this in #looking-for-players but I can post rn so is there anyone here thats under 18 and needs a campaign (its on Fridays 5pm gmt) 2 players had to drop out cuz of scheduling issues and it hasn't even been session 1 yet.
No but AD &D did create modules for Star Wars Adventures. I haven't got a chance to read any of the adventures modules
not the right channel
Yeah ik but it has a post limit and its not up for a few days and I kinda need one more player before next Friday.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Scheduling issues WILL be the death of me lol.
Anyone know anything about the warlock game that was teased
Why not PBP?
?
Me and my co-dms schedule is too busy so I cant do that unfortunately.
Play by post. Text based
do you mean playing by snail mail
The term has broadened more in modern day. It can refer to any text based game- such as on a forum or in a discord server.
I hope the warlock game gives us custom characters
I don't think anyone still plays by mail. Or how popular PbP using literal mail was for D&D (I know it was for other older games like Diplomacy.... HMMM, might need to dig into the history on that)
Yeah but unfortunately I cant do that lol, me and my co-dm are busy so I have to rely on tryna find people who are under 18 and are free on Fridays 5pm gmt.
I also wonder if it’s turn based
Pbp? Combat still is
I mean the warlock video game that just got teased
Ah i see
imagine playing by mail thats gotta be the worst thing ever
why specifically under 18
Because maybe that's the age group they feel comfortable playing with
Me and my co dm both are and idm playing with anyone but shes more comfortable playing with people under 18.
But also please take any game soliciting/organizing to the Looking For Game channels as it's off topic here

valid
Why aren't there any dragons in D&D?
Good point ngl yank
Wdym.
Ive never seen one
There…are
sounds like dm skill issue
I am not sure about that
What level is your party?
Plenty of dragons, both literal monsters or figurative problems
DM’s aren’t gonna throw a death fire/lightning/acid/yougetthepoint lizard at a level 3 party
Hehe
Howdy yall~
Gooooood morning afternoon evening!
Hail and well met
If you’re a lv4 element monk bugbear, than you could make melee attacks from 20ft away, so can you be like 20 or more ft away and throw a weapon to attack can you make that weapon land like 15ish ft away from the target, would that be aloud or does it have to be hitting the target?
Sounds like a #dnd-rules question
I joined like 5min ago so I didn’t know
Sall goodman
saul goodman?
Tis all good man
My very first campaign we ran into a black dragon wyrmling at level 3. Half of the party was stoked and the other half needed a clean change of pants.
Hm
I’m with the former, that sounds fun as hell
I think the fighter got in a wrestling match while my illusionist hid behind the door taking potshots.
I very rarely use dragons in my games. I think I can count on one hand. The number of times the dragon has made an appearance in the last 3 years
You need more dragons in your life.
Dragon amror and weapons
They're just not that compelling to me.
griffins are a better mythological creature imo
I totally understand why people love them. But for me there are more interesting monsters
LOL REKT
Lol
nucleargandhi, do you play civ?
Indeed
Ah
My go to enemies are Tanar'ri or Obyirths. But my current campaign has an overarching antagonist in the Inevitables.
inevitables and maruts are fun
Yeah I got my players trying to drum up an army because an army of them is coming from across the sea. They have a little under 2 months before they make landfall
I had to have an above table conversation that what they are facing is not prevention but mitigation.
das it, im running planescape next
Our main singular antagonist. Is a god of fate. They have decreed that the world shall end and start over.
I fear Maruts. I cannot fathom a situation to use them in
Planescape makes me afraid /j
when someone braks a multiversal contract
they prefer nonlethal attacks
Oh I see. Thank goodness, it sounds like someone needs to go out of their way to encounter one
I unleashed two of them on an unsuspecting party and when I told them automatic hit for 60 damage. They gasped. And then when I said
He's going to do it again.
That's when the fear happened
The nigh-unstoppable inevitables serve a singular purpose: they enforce contracts forged in the Hall of Concordance in the city of Sigil. Primus, the leader of the modrons, created maruts and other inevitables to bring order to dealings between planar folk. A wide array of disparate creatures, including yugoloths, will enter into a contract with inevitables if asked.
I believe we have two of the three main ones statted out in 5e
Been too long without a crumb of dnd
scratching for a planescape game...
Yeah, their role is typically to subdue and arrest someone who broke a multiversal contract, not to kill them.
Kobolds lack a +1. Which Ability Score should I give it to?
what
now im really tempted to play planescape
For their Player Race, they have +2 DEX, but no +1.
What should I give it to?
Then they don’t get a +1
you can also just not use the volo version
off-topic, but
why are "homebrew only" players so insufferable to deal with?
like they simply do not wanna listen. does anyone else have any bad experiences involving this?
Playable kobolds were updated in MotM, so like all the other species in that book, they get a free floating +2 and +1 that they can apply to whatever stats they want.
What’s a “homebrew only” player
someone who refuses to play 5e classes, and only plays fully homebrew classes from their favourite creators, or the ones they make
Can’t say I’ve ever experienced a campaign where people explicitly use only homebrew
Yeah me either, sounds like they don't actually wanna play 5e lol
Me neither
I will take that over someone who uses their own homebrew
i have had a player like that on my table like that for the past 6 months
and they refused to stop shilling their favourite creator
I mean, you have to use something in the official rules.
Else it’s not really dnd 5e
Weird. I wouldn’t allow it, but that’s also because I generally don’t allow homebrew character options.
My blood is boiling over at the mere thought
So far I've been lucky and haven't encountered a player like this, though such a player would be unlikely to make it into my table beyond session 0
Like I understand, homebrew does have some fun potential, but if you only wanna play homebrew for homebrew's sake that's an interesting stance to be stuck on. I do often see comments of players who wanna start off with homebrew just because they believe "homebrew" is, or asking about good homebrew since they wanna play homebrew just for the sake of it, and don't actually HAVE something they wanna play, and seem to just want to play it for its own sake, and I never really understand that 🤔
The most homebrew I have at my table are monsters, magic items, and an occasional spell.
he would use content from LaserLlama
Well, if it has to be from anyone, LL is a pretty good designer.
I find homebrew perfectly fine as long as the DM and other players are fine with it
i have given homebrew transformations to my players as well
Most common one I keep seeing is the "I wanna use homebrew so my character can be unique", which is definitely a terrible take / motivation 🤷
Yeah...
except he repeatedyly tried to force the entire catalog of LaserLlama content down my throat
Sounds like the official material needs more options.
Homebrew mechanics are from hell
when i say fighter, rogue, monk, paladin, everyone in this chat knows immediately what i am talking about
You can be a LITERAL dragon session 1, but if I see a homebrew mechanic longer than a sentence. It’s denied.
can anyone here tell me what a Shaman is?
Shaman is an NPC divine caster class.
There is such thing as good homebrew out there, but the experience I’ve had in the past is from players who want to use busted homebrew and don’t agree to rebalancing it as needed. Which is why I just generally avoid it at my tables.
or a Savant?
Like a witch doctor
Guy who blows smoke in your face and tells you that you must fight a wendigo?
So this individual didn't last long at the table, I presume?
“My player forcibly played this” should not be a sentence
It's actually one of the "core" classes in 3.5... but it appears in the DMG rather than the PHB because it's intended for NPCs and is weaker than PC classes.
WRONG! Shaman is a LL class that lets you take damage, store it in a blood totem, and reflect it back, or use it to fuel other abilities.
also replying to @raw ocean
Players who bring 3.5 into 5E, I genuinely despise them with my entire heart
Is all caps "wrong" necessary?
I tend to treat homebrew like UA and playtest. I may be willing to allow it so long as the player is willing to make necessary changes. So long as the homebrew isn’t irreparably busted from the get-go.
If I ever see “called shots” again bro…
No but it seems like they wanted to emphasize their point through all caps
I assure you, I'm not wrong. There may be more than one answer to the question, but my answer was not 'wrong'.
What is LL anyways
now you know how i felt
Something about a llama.
LaserLlama
Shaman was a published class in 3.5, it just hasn't been brought back for 5e
A relatively popular D&D content creator
Player trying to push their “unique” item to get at the start. (It’s just a reskinned wish ring with a single restriction)
Hi everyone!
he has tried to shove LL down my throat so hard, that i now have a deep seeded hatred for LL
waves.
Hello
Goooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup
Chicken buddy!
I would of told bro to chill on the LL, and tell him that no means no
please tell me you kicked them from the group
Chicken owner!
i did. today i did. he left the table
Hooray!
Chicken jockey 🔥🔥
he left after i listed in bulleted points, all the ways in which he harassed me for the last 6 months
I have to kick a player before the next game, and I'm inclined to tell the two of them that are causing problems to fight it out themselves and decide who stays and who goes.
When a player tells me they are playing a not Approved homebrew option. I laugh.
When they tell me they are serious. I laugh even harder.
Hitting players with the “ultimatum” is the best choice ever (after talking)
i like creativity. i have player who sat down with me, showed me a HB subclass they made for the base sorcerer, and balanced it with me. that was good. we toned it down to where it felt unique, while not out of place. it was based on aberrant mind
this LL shill, showed up with a class called, Vessel
There is room for millions of creative combinations in 5e already. Imo. If you need more to be creative. That is an issue.
Somehow I obtained the “Garlic Bread Domain” inside of my D&D homebrew at some point and I’m still tempted to use it
does anyone here know what the abilities of a vessel are?
Never looked at it, very interested
Sounds like a Binder-type class...
If someone "showed up" with a class I just tell them no
To be ignored as a main character and have some white hair blue eyed dude take your spotlight?
I tell my DM’s what I’m playing ahead of time even if it’s the most simple of classes
Teamwork makes the dream work
We don't end session zeros without completing character sheets. And we don't start them with character sheets.
Folks that come with pre-made characters before they've even heard the plot hook irritate me.
Oh my god don’t even get me started
THen again, DMs that don't provide a plot hook before hand also irritate me.
“Your campaign is cool and it’s medieval right, can I play my warforged ancient robot?”
No, they don't exsist on this material plane.
Actually? I’d be down to accept that depending on how they frame it.
They were an ancient weapon
I’m down still
With lost memories, and murderous tendencies
lost me at that last one
Imagine a toddler with a gun
Murderous tendencies would be a no-go at my table.
losing me even farther
Lost memories? I’ll see what I can do.
Murderous tendencies? Get this out of my face
And a homebrew race
Didn’t you say they were warforged?
VERY CLOSE
- being immune to fire, casting fireball in the middle of a room, with no repurcussions, kamikaze style as a subclass feature! this is a form transformation twice per SR AND LR
- then it targets flamable creatures, makes them to do a CHARISMA saving throw, and they start burning on a fail, taking charisma mod damage. literally Sasuke Uchiha Amaterasu nonsense. How do you stop it? No repeat saves. Go prone, and get back up 💀
- "ok wired, make the enemies immune or resistant." his subclass allows him to make immunities resistances, and resistances normal
he had the audacity to tell me it wasn't overpowered
this was at level 9
It was like a war forged variant based off of singularity from dying light
That player gets asked how long they have been playing. If over 1 year they get told to leave.
And under one year?
5 years
oh wow
Correct their behavior. Ignorance shouldn't be punished
I feel bad for some new players that were taught the wrong way and then got ostracized for it
The majority of folks I play with are either beginners or veterans. There is no in-between with 3.5.
How good is the new artificer?
Just bought the new book on Beyond last night and haven't made one yet.
No idea, heard the new changeling has something really good
i ran a one shot for some people yesterday. i also run build playtests and stress tests , to check out the build, cuz the DMG2024 is surprisingly good at that, as a baseline, unlike DMG2014
it was scaled to level 9, and he stomped it, without even trying
I can understand the frustration of learning how to play the game wrong. I don't want to punish people for it. At the same time, the general assumptions that the people that I play with are somewhat literate.
Reading is not that hard if you are literate and the book is right there.
we don't talk about 4E
i wasn't there, but oh lawd i ain't DMing 4E
Then you get people that think they are so literate, they can use small technicals in the text to power build
How difficult are shadow monks to be made work in a big team not built around darkness or stealth?
Personally, if it makes sense I’ll let it pass in my campaigns. If it’s just a small text saying they can light the giant bear on fire instantly, no.
People who try to bend the rules to say what they aren't rarely get past me and I get called a bad DM for it. But they don't understand is that those insults empower me
bro reading just your own character sheet is not hard. if you are spellcasting, that is a whole different story. i would not recommend spell casting to a new timer. but if you are taking 2 mins, to swing your greatsword, then you are wasting everyone's time
Ummm, if you utilise Darkness well (put it in an object you can easily close it open to release or seal tha darkness without an action), then it can work fairly easily
When someone says.
The book doesn't say I can't do it.
They immediately go on thin ice
Woah, red flag
So like just open your mouth at the start of your turn to get advantage, close it at the end so your allies don't have disadvantage and scram?
I got no time for bad faith interpretations of the rules
Or leave it on some archers while your team whacks the front liner, but yes
Put the darkness on your sword and sheath/unsheath it whenever you attack
i tried. they were knowingly doing it
I wonder if some DM out there ignored a players poison resistance/immunity by saying “it’s venomous damage”
And of course if you’re in a situation where you don’t need to restrain your darkness, go ham
Working part time and trying to maintain consistency with campaigns sucks buns.
Alrighty, sounds pretty great!
i have tried for 6 months. learned my lesson. never again, am i allowing full homebrew classes onto my table again
Hello I just joined
hello Landshark! How has your day been?
I've been told that I'm a very strict DM. And many players have left my table calling me anti-fun.
But the players that have stuck by me have told me that it's not that I'm strict. It's that I have standards for how I will be treated. That's something that every DM needs to adopt. Conflict management should be like a required class
Shadow monks seem the most fitting to be a sneaky skirmisher
New campaign I’m in and the DM gave us some chalk that has random affects based on what we write, writing “judgement” in red chalk on a sword duplicates it?
Pretty chill I got to dissect a frog in biology, just got out school and am now waiting for bus
I suspect you have no shortage of applicants that want to play, though.
Goooood morning afternoon evening!
I don't have any shortage of applicants to play with. Mainly because I live near metro area. And I make it a point to make my D&D players, friends, not my friends into D&D players
I understand that not everybody has that luxury, however, even if they are your friends, that does not mean that you should tolerate bad treatment.
@glass granite if I don't want to be a grappler, what's the best strategy to play a monk?
Punch alot
Tripping specialist? Is that a thing in 5e?
New Strat, disarm people then run away as a tabaxi monk
i am quite opposite. i reward player creativity, and let them go ham, but if they try to do something too far away from the book, i shut it down. i let people put their rifles on other people's shoulders, to gain advantage, but the shouldering person has to make a CON save, or have disadvantage on d20 check until the end on the next turn. but disarming someone by shooting their hand? no! then what is the point of Disarmaing Attack existing? that is how i rule things. risk and pay-off, but try to illegally recreate things in the book, then nah
Just walk forward and punch?
Yes.
"disarming someone by shooting their hand?" sounds like a called shot. I'm pretty sure there are no called shots in D&D.
i wouldn't really say i am a stict DM, I just have very little, but EXTREMELY rigid rules
No where did I say that I do not reward creativity. I do all the time. I do not reward bad faith interpretations of the rules.
Ummmm
My go to actually is either lunch a lot, or use weapons (I like a one level dip in Ranger)
Not particularly. Like it’s possible to make a tripping build to inflict the prone condition but it’s not particularly in-depth or always advantageous
Things like using create water to fill lungs
If a player says “Can I do this”, I’ll think about it. If a player says “it says in the rules I’m able to do this”, I’ll think about it but in an angry way
yeah you are right, i phrased it badly. my bad bro <3
EXACTLY
Dipping into ranger sounds interesting, especially since you become a bit of a skill monkey
iPhone spelling correction sucks
And when a player says the rules don't prohibit me from doing this. That's when I harsh. Mainly because that kind of weaseling language means that they know they shouldn't be asking what they're asking
tbh i would make them roll con and be deafened on failure, since you know a gun just went out next to their ear
And get hunters mark, though your bonus action is stacked already but still
Try writing "Elbereth" on the ground when a monster approaches
Basically if the player tries to rule as a DM, I’m going to go judge Judy on them
1 level isn’t enough for expertise, but it is enough for weapon mastery, some spellcasting and a good ol hunters mark
they have 20 CON plus Tough, so I let them feel that power fantasy
That’s my only job, be a legal rules lawyer and make cool stuff happen
and it's a fighter
aye, so they will have easy time passing the check
Where does a barbarian’s damage come from?
Sheer will power
from the weapon
An object in motion swiftly coming to a rest
But they only get 1 extra attack
Right. Well it does sound interesting. Though I'd probably prefer a punchy monk i think. Dual wielding scimitars is pretty sick though
so they better make it count
I like using nick weapons with hunters mark. The damage actually isn’t actually that much better if at all, but big number make brain happy
It’s like how an 40 year old parent is usually weak until they have to lift a car off of their kid
They get a bunch of rage and reckless attack stuff iirc
And brutal strike helps
there was this one player who has vital sacrifice and Fiendish Vigor, and long story short, due to some word soup, they had 1200d6 waiting to drop at a moment's notice. that is and average 4800 Psychic damage
...and he got mad a DM banned it
...i later removed him from my table as well
Lunch?
Like short rest?
I’ll allow a one shot attack, but only if their character permanently dies while using it (must be cool as hell too)
Nom
I play dhampir, and my DM rules in favour of the bite working
they do. cuz they are a fighter. but i like your idea. thanks!
If a player attempted to do 1200 d6 damage. And they're justification could not come from a direct reading of the allowed source books. I would just tell them no and move on to the next person
mhmm. but 4800 dmg, not even god can save it
Wait, actually that's sick
By my reading, it's been made less powerful and less fun.
And it just gave me an idea
But I'm aware that other people think differently.
I am like a butcher with a thumb on the scale
people with lower stat get higher DC than people with high stat
Are dhampires in 2024 by any chance?
Yup!
Circle casting can let you do that now, but it does take a long while and alot of casters
Yay!
I haven't read it yet but less power ≠ less fun
And it’s Dhampir, not Dhampire
oh i do have a dhampir that feeds on its on familiar
This actually ties up everything so nice! I don't even have to come up with much of a reason why my character got kicked out of their family and their name forgotten
Oooo afternoon tea
Okay nevermind. I’m good.
Thanks for correcting!
Got worried about IST lmao
They are in the digital book Astarion's Book of Hungers only on DND beyond.
exactly. i power game as well, but it's none of this nonsense. the most i do is 1h weapon juggling with Dual Wielder, cuz i like taking advantage of the martial changes in 2024
what even is the point if you can oneshot god?
Well, you need to figure out how they became a Dhampir. The cause is important.
this guy did this on an ATTACK
Turns out if you are Warlock with the Pact of the Chain you can drink fiendish blood till you burst
Dhampirs become dhampirs from getting bit by vampires, right?
That’s one way
thats one way
Jinx
That’s one way
I see
dhamphirs are not limited to being vampire spawn.
Hit em with the “You won but at what cost”… (immediately give them bone cancer)
What are some other things they can be?
There's at least 2 books that tell you about dhampir origins for 5e. Maybe 3.
They can also be cursed, have a parasite, have it come from their bloodline…
do people here play the D&D Online steam game
Or you can just make up a reason.
in ravenloft, there was a reccomendation for basically a dream eater or baku baku
"write that down!"
So many great choices to choose from, nice!
They took away the level 1 tinkering ability that let the artificer do a number of fun but ultimately useless things. As a replacement...you can make about 5gp of standard adventuring equipment.
Thank WOTC for the magical prostetics
Dhampir monks are fun as hell
And it ties very well with a shadow monk esthetic i think
Love hitting players with the “eye for an eye”, Power build = I’m throwing your direct weakness at you and only you
I’m gonna play an Astral Self Dhampir monk, with the eventual Ranger dip for daggers. That way I can BOTH grapple and slash.
That sounds really cool
the dhamphir im playing is based off the Philippine's mananangal, echo knight fighter/undead warlock
Where? In the UA or one of the released books?
Sick
New book
astarion's digital book only on dndbeyond
Sounds incredible and mad
that is perfect. let's you measure their character as well
- if they take it sportingly, you can dial it down, cuz you know they don't mind challenges
- if they start crying, KEEP HITTING THEM WITH MORE OF THEM
It’s three stats, not too bad
she focused on CHA and DEX
pact of the blade helps
Right, i forget fighters don't need dex and strength
I’m reflavouring the astral self arms to be evocations of blood, that can grasp the enemy and strike them with the might of vampiric ancestry and spite
I hate it when DM’s see their players doing good and start making every single encounter harder, not every bandit camp is going to be an avenger level threat
Ngl people saying we don't have enough intelligence casters are pretty funny, considering the strength vs dex divide for martials/halfcasters
We have two int casters
We have plenty of representatives on both strength and Dex (granted strength kinda needs help)
I mean, strength is barbarian, paladin sometimes (fully viable with dex) and fighter sometimes (fully viable with dex)
Dex is monk, ranger, rogue, fighter sometimes and paladin sometimes
You can make most of the strength martials work with dex but making dex martials work with strength is a pain
3 and 4 ain’t that big of a difference
Wdym?
Three strength martials, 4 Dex martials
I’m not counting paladin for some reason wait
Ah, yes. Just saying 2/3 strength martials can easily be played as dex martials without losing much
I feel like monk is just too weird to make work with strength tho
Probably
it'd be a bit counter intuitive imo, since it'd destroy their AC
Ranger has a strength equivalent, the only problem is armor.
Strength rogue does exist actually
No encumbrance is amazing, I love having 234 swords on my person
There's a strength rogue? 🤔
Again, only problem is armor
They exist and are playable, just that they're outright worse then their dex builds while the dex builds for strength martials except for barbarian aren't
Yeah, just not too good
Fair point
Though, I feel like that’s a problem of Dex being stronger than strength, and less so about the actual classes
id imagine so. a str rogue would severely limit their sneak attack, unless you're using a finesse weapon, aswell as their stealth and slight of hand which is their main identity
Why wouldn’t you use a finesse weapon?
Strength should get more to do, it has a pretty good but only 1 skill check and the strength save isn't that important
Fair fair 😅
And strogues sometimes get three levels in barb for primal knowledge for advantage too lol
It’s a goofy build
Some weapon masteries are only avalible for strength weapons. Fighters can bypass that though
Reckless attack gives free sneak attacks too actually, and you can stealth with strength
Strength also effects,
Carry Capacity, Jump Distance and a few other physical things, but yeah, its not that great
Yeah, jump distance is pretty great, idk how many people track carrying capacity, but would like to know
My harengon wizard seeing that strength effects jump distance, but he has a species related jump that absolutlely doesn't care about it, cinema
the other things that strength affects, is usually neglected i feel
Dex gets some very important skills, one of the most important and common saves, armour class, initiative, ranged weapons and some melee weapons
I track capacity
its peak
I only track encumberance when it is unreasonable. " (spoken in a New Jersey accent)Yo DM we are going to carry all of the gold, work of arts and jeweled chests, weighing a ton or so. Yeah we have no horses or anything, only our back packs and the town is 20 miles away. Alright?"
So...weird question, but does a dnd session HAVE to strictly follow the rules or can it be deviated from?
Right now i play a basicly no rules dnd session from a dragon worlds pov my partner is a young dragon started out Hatchling, its more of an easy longer one that we do on occasion, but I want to start a new campaign possibly with more people then just 1 on 1 with my partner but ive never done that...just 1 on 1 however ive always hated strict rules too, if i could maybe get some advice on this it would be nice
Ive been considering something simular to a channel called magic the Noah where the guy just throws crazy things at the players and it just gets insane and fun.
that depends entirely on the expectation of the group
some tables follow the rules to the letter, others might discard it entirely
Magic the Noah literally just plays calvinball
What's calvinball?
no concrete rules, the game cannot be played the same way twice
It's a game the titular characters of the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes play.
Thats basic how im doing it with my partner, but from what i understand here, rules are dependent on group, game, and how tightly it's planned to be followed?
yes
I'd say it's hard to actually be playing D&D instead of make believe without any rules.
Additional players will likely be expecting something different.
That gives me alot more to work with, I thought it was supposed to be stricter to rules but if it deppends I can make it to where it has just enough to work with a group while not being over bearing or too many to try and focus on
Maybe this will help? https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1124085561649541140
It can range from barely being dnd to being as strict to the books as possible, but yes it’s gotta be discussed first. Most tables are close to the rules with personal deviations.
Lemme check that out rq, also the people id potential have added struggle already with rules and stuff and would be new to it, so too many rules could lead to confusion but too little may also be confusing
Recently became the note taker amongst the party, it's very fun changing stuff around occasionally to keep them on their toes
That’s evil
How needed is tavern brawler on a monk?
Not needed, but I like it
False hydra reincarnated as a player
Moderately needed. I found it to be helpful when you get more attacks and higher martial dice
Alrighty
Can find familiar be cast as a ritual spell if you don't have the spellcasting feature or spell slots?
Like if you're a martial with magic initiate
The only things you normally use there are the rerolls on 1’s, and the push, which isn’t that necessary
Don’t you need certain things to be able to ritual cast?
Alrighty
Like not every class can even ritual cast even the spellcasters
Wait what
My character has recently also obtained three owl pets that trade almond water, almond bars, and carpet tile amongst each over
Yeh the class needs to mention it
They are always gambling, but I don't know what they are gambling on
You’re playing in the backrooms?
I will all my classes to have ritual casting. It works out usually
Just noticing that now when you make any roll in dnd beyond, it asks to click again "roll to everyone". How do you disable that? I just want to make an athletics check
Like cosmic horror-esque campaign, there is a backrooms and we exactly opened a gate to it and they flew out
Then we closed the gate so nothing too crazy came out!
I have one old owl on my head, and 2 young ones on my shoulders
I named them, Uno, Dos, and Quatro
I'm pretty sure this isn't the case
I've never seen that popup on the digital sheet.
I don’t think smth like Paladin can ritual cast while wizard does (in the spell casting it verbatim says wizard can whike Paladin has 0 mention)
in 2024, all classes can ritual cast
Another 2024 w
It just says you need to have the spell prepared
wizard mentions it because they can ritual cast spells they arent preparing but is in their spellbook
Can magic initiate ritual cast?
does anyone know how to help?
if it has the ritual tag, it can be ritual casted
Even if you don't have the spellcasting feature?
Like even if your class isn't a caster?
Does anyone have a dnd campaign that I could maybe join
Ohh Oki thx
I track it entirely even down to coin weight
Hey everyone, can you give me your stupidest Vicious Mockeries?
I saw "went to thine dungeon all thy monsters knew me" and i want more of that
Random question, but would anyone have an idea for a low(ish?) CR monster a mage / wizard might have as a group of allies?
Basically, think necromancer vibes but not zombie 😛
Awakened shrub?
Many constructs
Animated armor, brooms, the like
Mm, first gives more druid specific vibes, the second an artificer 🤔
crawling hands
Animated armor isn't a machine, it's literally an empty suit of armor that moves by magic.
Again sounds more necromancy 😛
Animated broom is straight out from Fantasia
Ah yee, was more referenceing the "many constructs" -part without having gotten to the specifics yet, sadly for reasons I'm not sure they'd work lol
Awakened furniture?
Any familiar?
Sphinx of Wonder is always the right answer.
Looking for monster vibes, not so much animated stuff, I suppose 😛
Familiars were a thought, but they feel like more.. well, familiar lol. Like you'd have one for utility, not so much for combat
Who said you coulden't tape a gun to your dog?
Then an aberrant spirit, for sure.
Beholderkin my beloved
you said necromancer
That you did
Fair, I meant more in the way of "Like a necromancer as in has a group of lot of monsters"
If you get a limb cut off, can't you just get a necromancer to resurrect it and give you control over it?
But without the undead theme
mephits
A pseudodragon? Hardly low cr
Oh shoot, mephits might work 👀
I can already see a DM crying trying to sort a 38 turn order
and players crying too since they have to wait 12 minutes for their turn
Only 12?!
Haha this is definitely me as a DM planning to throw a massive swarm at the party. Just didnt wanna go with necromancer route if possible 😏
you can make them one hits and also make swarm statblocks for them
Don't need an actual turn order for a swarm, you can always go down the route of having a swarm surround them being blocked by some light source, then it goes out randomly and they have to fight 3-4 every once in a while
Me, In Ti-Moths Titanic Upheaval Campaign, waiting 30 minutes between my turns /hj
im tryiiiing
I was reading some of the 5.5e rules, and apparently giant birds can't be wildshaped into anymore?
yeah, giant eagle is celestial now, giant vulture is fiend, and giant owl is fey
Respectfully, that's stupid.
All three should be either Beasts, or Magical Beasts.
not a fan of that change myself, but i get why
Magical beasts isnt a category in 5e
Maybe it's just the biologist in me talking, but "monstrosity" is all but meaningless as a category to me. Like, half the things in it are just strange magical animals.
oh yeah it sucks moon druids dont have any high CR flying options anymore
even non moon druids, i dont think there are CR 1s
the change has nothing to do with biology
makes me feel like it was an intentional design choice, albeit a bizarre one
I know; it's just an odd choice.
yeah, the change is more thematic
giant eagles being celestial is probably a callback to the giant eagles of lotr
quetzal is still a thing, even if its cr 2 and not core
that is true, but i think a flying beast above CR 1/2 is just such a strange omission from the monster manual
and your only option outside of the monster manual being a huge sized dinosaur seems, unintended
and the only non bird animal this changed happen to afaik is the giant elk
giant hyena miiight be monstrosity or fiend?
beast
yeah, weird
just makes me feel like someone at wotc didnt want level 8+ druids to be flying around with large animals
OK, now this is getting ridiculous. If it's recognisable as an animal from our own world, why isn't it a beast?
giant elk are associated with elves and the feywild
like the one the elven king rode in the hobbit
Thranduil?
i mean giant elks are celestial, so i can only assume it's some sort of upper planes dweller
OK, fair, but that doesn't mean they need to be a fey.
DAMMIT, not even Fey?!
ok, i have to assume its some connection to artemis or other hunt gods now
Capybara?
... giant capybara i can see being fey
my thoughts too, just as a connection to the beastlands
Yes.
10 ft emanation of charm/calm emotions
but overall i feel the creature type change being unneccessary when the DMG says you can change creature types for your encounters
Vulnerable to all damage but has 10000000 health
nah, they just charm everything to not attack them
So, I could just make whatever I wanted a beast - within reason - and that'd be fine?
if youre the DM, sure
And then anything that does attack them, get's immediately jumped by the entire fey wild
Cool!
DM has final say. i know iv turned many a beast into a Construct when the party was approaching the god of a forge's home
Now I want to run an ecology-focused campaign where the party are all magical conservationists.
"Hey uh, you guys remember where we put that rapidly evolving virus?"
kinda have a similar campaign with inspiration from the godzilla movies and monster hunter
"It seems like it's jar broke open."
today we learned that the alien we were studying was a teenager this whole time so she actually doesnt know much aside from the apocalyptic doomsday revelation that the overseers might eat the planet since the warding on the planet expired
Trying to decide if I wanna shell out for more books for the holiday season. Are any of the following books pretty good value? Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons, The Book of Many Things, Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants, and the Griffon’s Saddlebag: Book Two
theyre all great books
i especially am a fan of fizban and bigby, although having the ai copy of bigby horts my soul
one day theyll reprint the alt cover with no ai art
They used AI art?
ai assisted
Im not angry, just dissapointed.
one of the artists had ai assisted art
Hi not angry, just disappointed, I’m Nugget
I just cursed you with your next 100 players to be power players that constantly want to argue RAW rules with you
