How do I find text dnd?
I wonder, how powerful are the DnD bosses if power scaled?
Pretty strong..
Look for games listed as play by post. Roll20 also has a filter for text only games.
I mean I finally found tne monster medusa from earlier. (Different topic)
But the monster was Hythonia.
Super super nasty monster. but dm raised the dc to 20 for the con save and the health up to 400 for the first health. After she does her short rest thing she got tne normal 199 health.
She's only cr 17 but with those buffs she's wicked
i was thinkin
3 charges per day
when you hit someone w your fists you can expend a charge.
the target must succeed on a dc16 strength saving throw or be knocked prone
refresh at dawn
wym?
I mean theirs magic items for this
Their wraps of unarmord power. You can just flavor them as brass knuckles
Man, these maps I got feel like highway robbery for their price
How much?
10
They're storage devourers and had to manually download it all tho
So that's the offset
I've found my answer
Put it simply out of a party of 5 I was the only one that survived
Why? Cause I was a earth elemental... and they don't petrify
||Moon druids for the win||
Come to the realization that these maps will blow some of my players PCs up
What size are they (Mb & pixels)?
How can I join a game of D&D
is it just me or (at least 2014) does soulknife at level 9 feel like minato from naruto xD the psionic blade throw teleport is literally just like his flying raijin where he teleports to his thrown kunai
I’m looking for a D&D party to join
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
HIHIHIHIHIHI IM NEWWW AND IM REALLY INTERESTEDDDD
Check out #dnd-newcomers for some handy guides on getting started.
THANKK YOUU!!!!
Also, careful when using all caps
Server rules ask that we don’t use all caps in our messages because it can mess with people’s screen readers, which some visually impaired individuals may rely on
hey, Im looking for a group to play with
Im brand new and Im not that good with the rules though
As everyone else has said to help learn the rules of the game there's #learn-to-play and #dnd-newcomers
If you just wanted the server's groupfinding resource check out #find-a-game for the instructions
Hey, long time player, soon to be first time DM, does anyone know a server that specialises in dm discussions/ a place to bounce ideas off each other?
I’ll be so honest it’s such a daunting task
Thank you, all of you
Dunno but the whole collection was about 40-50GBs
Just for the foundry modules.
Then for the printables and raw maps it was about 100gbs I think
Cause most maps have like 10-20 variants.
Unless you wanted a full server for it but idk
😭 This wasn’t in my added channels and now I feel silly
Add the dm role to yourself and it should add all the dm channels or most of the important ones
What can I take to knock people prone as a rogue? I don’t see any great feats for it
Isn't there a feat that gives battle master maneuvers?
Im assuming for consistently doing it
Maybe charger?
Yes, once per short or long rest
Don't take feats, just wait till lvl 5
Why? What do I get at level 5?
I assume 2014
Trip attack?
This is 2014
Ah i see, should probably be specified in the question as the questions are generally implied to be for the latest version otherwise
I already have slasher, so I think I’ll take charger next level
Uhh what about shield bashing people?
Prolly abit late to add it if you've already got a character but if you managed to get shield prof and shield master
Never been a massive fan of the alignment system but id prolly go with neutral good
There’s a fighting style that gives them
Or at least there was in 2014, I don’t remember about 2024
Martial adept. You get two moves but only one die (refresh on SR). If it were two dice I'd say it was worth it.
You could possibly dip a level into monk for martial arts and then use the flurry attack as a shove attack
Im not sure if thats someone monks can do since I havent really played monk but I think it works
Rogue '24 can do that innately with a Cunning Strike.
Only if you're unarmoured and not using a shield, though. Dex focus and mage armour could help.
Ahh, I see it is not a '24 Rogue.
Could be a lot since Alignment is super vague, doesn't matter anyway, Alignment is a terrible tool to describe character psychology, better to write a good PBIF (Personality, Bonds, Ideals, Flaws) instead.
guys give me a very basic name justa basic common name
If it's 2014 that doesn't work.
give me one
Damn
Dexter
Damian
Po
hmm too ninja
Tom
tooo panda
How is "Damian" ninja like?
i need very basic name for a guy who sounds and looks like an npc
DC
Normand Pique Caliente NPC
This isn't a very good explanation, are you referring to Damian Wayne?
how about JOHN smith
yeah in the comics technically assassina are ninjas sooo same thing in my eyes
You got a cultural reference you want to draw from (aside from Batman)?
Damian = Damian Wayne = assassin = ninja is ... a looot of leaps.
that is so far away from what ninjas are, but okay...
But anyway, you never objected to dexter.
dexter sounds too unique in my eyes
It's a regular person name? Okay how about Donald?
Lawful evil
now i like the sound of that im gonna give it to a duck
John.
Never heard of it.
sorry wrong spelling i mean smith
John Smith is the literal most common name in britain
now if you think about a guy who's name john smith, what do you think about if you were adventurer?
If that helps
Michael
Our cleric is named John Clergy
John Smith. Human fighter. Blonde. Greatsword.
you almost complete that the wrong you have was blond and greatsword
he must be clerg
Those are certainly words.
Dont know 100% but believe it is actually clergy
make sense
They tried making the most average character, average length, everage age, average name
Except the whole divine cknnection to god bit ofcourse
John Smith, Human fighter. 20 years old, 6'2. Male, blonde, greatsword.
what if a guy who's just completely average no specialities
like his goal is just have a comfortable and affordable life
John Dungeons and Dragons
what's zat?
Then he wouldn't be an adventurer
He would just be John Smith, peasant npc
well what if he becomes adventurer bc to try to connect himself with his community and try to have sort of fun or exicitement in his life just tiny inch of it
I'm John Dungeons and Dragons, I'm actually a Human Barbarian and I'm looking for the man who killed my brother!
Me connecting with my community by leaving it constantly and having a bit of excitement by nearly dying in mortal combat.
Speaking of Barbarians..
I'm playing a Centaur Barbarian soon 👀
like he joins a party bc he heard it gives 10% income than a sole adventurer and technically keep himself safe
now i see the flaws now
Jiddurn Moonscorns the name
Rippin' heads off for the Zhentarim is the game 🧐
time to improve his goals
I'm John "D&D" Smith, I'm a Wizard of the Coast. I'm looking for the man that killed my parents.
To be fair, wanting a comfortable life, surrounded by friends and family and being an adventurer aren't mutually exclusive. Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings is a classic example of this.
make sense even the hobbit unc guy
now the question is who's first lord of the rings or DND
Yeah, Frodo's is an especially sad case of that - because of how the Hero's Journey goes, he's changed and for Frodo, he couldn't go back. Bittersweet. 🥲
Prepare to die
well technically he's equivalent of veteran
Hi
hola echo echo
Dark Souls: Remastered, Prepare to Die Edition?
My favorite!!!
-# echo echoo
Yeah, following the Hero’s Journey model, most adventurers don’t really want to be adventurers forever. They’re getting a job done so they can go back to their relatively peaceful lives.
is that BEN 10 REFERENCE
Hola como estas?
You know "common" is very relative. Where I live Somjai is a super common man's name.
ah
Bueno. como esta el tuyo?
Not to be a stick in the mud, but please remember that for moderation purposes this is an English only server.
Unfortunately one of the rules of this server are that messages should be in English, since moderators cannot moderate in other languages.
ah yatsi
Jinx
would John smith be technically useles in a battle bc he's just basic common guy?,wasn't built for this and just a guy try to skip the process of his goal
"Eddy Murphy, tapping his temple, grinning."
That's alright, in D&D, how good you are at hitting people with your weapons is based entirely on hiq strong you are
now i have an idea for his flaws,he's selfish and impatient of his goals he want it quick and onyl cares if it benefits him
Okay, so he's evil.
that's why he's in a party bc he heard it gives you 10% more in come than an alone adventurer
So why would a party want to travel with John?
Cansado tengo Que entregar todo mi tarea para terminar el trimestre para ir a graduation
Oh mb
Also should probably move the convo to #character-discussion
How is going in a party and splitting the treasure give you more money than taking 100% of the profit by going alone?
AM's conversation discussing their character idea
Ah
let's talk it in character discussion
So, how's everybody rocking today?
tired,
I’m doing pretty good
I have to send in everything for all my classes of what I did for the semester to go into graduation
im so cooked.
I have one more workout to test and I'll be able to start finalizing the latest update to my D&D workout book. The goal is to finish it tonight and publish it right before the holidays. 🙌🏾
(still free of course)
I didn’t know you were making a book!
Yeah problem this semester i havent been paying attention shit. Im not getting anything for graduation anyways.
Me neither though I wouldn't be against trying it out
IVE just been listening to Metallica all semester
Yeah, it's already published.
Manual of Gainful Exercise on DMs Guild. You'll see it's listed as just under 4 dollars, but there are unlimited coupon codes on the page - so you can get it 50%, 90%, and 100% off (free).
im so cooked
I just want to publish an update to include Heroes of Faerun.
cool
Ngl theres been times ove wanted to publish on DMs guild but I know there's a bit when it comes to costs and legal
what are Asians represents?
It's actually not so bad, though it's very intimidating.
But for me, my entire book is done in Google Docs (so free). The art I of course paid for. And otherwise I just had to make sure some legal text was copy and pasted in.
Oh haha It's a podcast I'm a cohost on. We talk about Asian representation in pop culture media and the gaming space. Many, many years ago we did a read of the old AD&D Oriental Adventures and commented on it.
so basically a dnd for Asians?
I remember a while ago seeing the style sheet for FR, a bit restrictive in a way but I get why
We do talk about D&D (how we write and play it) when you're part of the Asian diaspora, yeah (and our host Daniel Kwan is even a published WOTC freelance writer!). But the podcast doesn't have an "actual play" aspect anymore.
oh cool
I can’t play dnd because it has magic
I did a small group project where we self-published something on DMs Guild. One of our team members focused just on layout - if that's an option for you.
For Manual of Gainful Exercise, I did the layout myself but I also asked a friend to "check my work" and give me some basic feedback like on fonts, titles, casings, etc.
Ah, I see. Interesting
Wait what
Yea
Before I ask my question, am I interrupting anything?
I mean its a forum so one never really can interrupt
Trandoshan? Neat.
I can’t play dnd because it has magic and yayadiyq
Oh is it almost finished? Congrats!
Well you can still talk about D&D right?
Gotta love it when people are paranoid of a fictional subject (I mean just dnd magic)
My DMsGuild project has entered year 4 of development. And I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
So... The characters in the campaign I'm running are currently in a forest and stuff. And one of the characters was a secret agent for an organization within the Lords' Alliance. I'm thinking of having them do a small mission after the campaign ends, escorting a captured prisoner to the Lords' Alliance base in Baldur's Gate. But I'm kind of out of ideas for what to put along the way to make it a small adventure and stuff.
I am itching to play dnd right now. We had to cancel our past two weekly games due to sickness and shedualing issues and the one that would be this week is already cancled due to events at the hosts house. going 3 weeks of no dnd makes me sad
It's generally fine, but the reason it's not part of the core rules (IMO) is because it can really slow the game down. Calculating all the reasons you might have advantage and then all the disadvantage and comparing them isn't always a clear thing.
(Back in 3.5E, a similar issue came up where you had to add up all of your situational bonuses/negatives - and it could get very tedious.)
Yeah lol
Say more on this? Is this like a whole campaign or...? 👀
It'd more annoying and bookkeeping. Bad for gameplay, imo.
What's on your mind?
A satellite style map of the entire planet of the forgotten realms. With a guide book that takes the Heroes of Faerûn approach but for 200 subdivisions of the realms. Instead of the North for example it's, Frozenfar, Hartsvale, Sword Coast North, Savage Frontier, and the High Forest.
With a 12k location index on the map. The text block alone is over 800 pages currently. And 205+ NPCs one from each region of the realms.
It also gives lore for the blank Continents of Osse, Arandron, Anchorome, and Katashaka. While consciously giving no room for cultural appropriation.
A lunatic project. I applaud you!
Each NPC has VTT token and Full body art. As each section contains an excerpt of a conversation with them as the book is presented as an in world Odyssey of the Realms.
Is there a fire version of shadow blade? Or one that does fire dmg
Flame blade, but ... it doesn't count as a weapon, it is a weapon shaped magical effect.
Once the whole thing is out the book will come with a commercial license for other creators to use the maps.
So im new to D&D, so this might be a dumb question, so feel free to call me an idiot 🤪
What's the difference between a wizard and a warlock, is it not the same thing? And does a cleric fall under magic user?
Good Morning
Lot of awesome stuff going on here makes me excited to get back into D&D myself
All three are casters, but derive their power from different sources - and use different (and/or overlapping) spell lists, and there are some other mechanical differences and each have unique abilities, like the Cleric's Turn Undead
Cleric, yes.
Warlocks get their magical secrets from a patron as opposed to the self-directed study of wizards. In game terms this gives them big bangs with faster refresh, but wizards have more scope and short-term stamina for casting.
Wizards get their magic through study and kinda the “basic” magic users. Warlocks make deals with demons or other beings, and are more customizable
I just want to say there is no such thing as a dumb question if you don’t know the answer and I want to say welcome to playing dnd and I hope you have an amazing experience with it
Sorcerers get options to enhance their spells because it’s their innate magic ability
Is there a difference between classes and roles?
I don’t think a role is a term in the game
Good question, yes: multiple classes can fill different roles
classes are in the game, roles aren't a thing you are, but a purpose you serve
Ah
like a cleric's class is a cleric and their role is medic and whatever else clerics are supposed to do
Ooooh
Clerics have a lot of healing and protection options, druids shapeshift into animals, bards do songs and mind control
roles are an invention by the players to comprehend mechanics, classes are the mechanics
Speaking of roles, I really like swashbuckler rogue’s pananche feature
These aren't official game terms, but if you look at the mechanics there are four general kind of roles that players can fulfill: Damage, Utility, Support, and Control.
No class is solely one of those, they usually do two or more of them.
And depending on your build and subclass you can make your character do more and different roles.
To use a car analogy, you want a commuter car, an A-B grocery getter - there are many cars in the market that could serve this purpose
Can you have more then one role?
Genrally you will have more than one role.
yes
Yes, some builds/classes etc can serve multiple roles
generally most people should be able to do more than one thing
Usually no build will only be one role.
And again, "roles" are not an official game term.
Just something the community uses to help build team tactics.
What am I thinking of then 🤔 what game has roles?
yea role is a substance smuggled over from Overwatch and other Hero Shooters
Ah
maybe 4th edition? that system kind of had more role oriented stuff for characters baked in
Damage = Fairly self explanatory, it's a combat role that makes enemies dead
Utility = Out of combat solutions to problems, often using Skills
Support = Enhancing ally action economy
Control = Hindering enemy action economy
Possibly video games based on D&D, however loosely, like the "Trinity" - tank, heals DPS, D&D does not have such hard lines between roles, and there are more of them
Oh I forgot to mention the book will feature 600 adventure hooks. About a paragraph long about specific locations on the map.
I always wanted to play as a big game hunter in D&D, with a trophy room filled with many great beasts......although some of his trophies pose a.....moral conundrum
Could be a ranger.
Ranger works for that
yea Rangers are very hunting coded, they even have a subclass called Hunter
they're like Fighters but with spells
Say I was to play as a warlock, since it's a RPG, can I come up with my own deity or do I have to pick one from the books?
BTW sorry if this question are a little annoying 😑
either one works, really
Warlock's don't technically use a god, but rather a patron which can be any powerful being that granted them power
Your DM is the best one to advise you there (but you have great freedom to describe the particulars of your patron).
this too, Patrons and Gods are different
Last servitor of a forgotten god, that can be fun.
a Patron can be a God because Patron is really just a word that refers to whatever deity bestows you with its power
Also true, to a degree.
The warlock/bard i play, his patron is an archfey for example. So i wrote his patron as a powerful faerie creature that gave him power and in return, he has to play music at festivals in they feywilds upon request constantly.
oo this is a good describe it - the title of Patron is bestowed as a result, it is granted because of something you've done, not what you are, like how the title of "pet" is bestowed upon an animal that has been domesticated, whereas the title of dog is bestowed because of what a dog is
I thought patrons and Gods were the samething
no
a god can be a patron but a patron does not have to be a god ( a god as defined as a divine entity)
Typically warlocks' patrons are considered "lesser than" the regular gods - mostly just to keep them separate from the clerics.
Like a demon?
also because warlocks are generally viewed as a more secretive kind of magic than clerics
yeah a demon could work
not necessarily, but gods can be patrons to warlocks. One off the top of my head is Asmodeus for Fiendlocks
Yes, Warlocks are more seen as having made a deal with a powerful being to gain powers they would not normally have.
yea, Demons, Devils, Celestials, Archfey, Great Old Ones, etc.
essentially anything with capabilities to bestow magic
And not even that. All the patron has to do is point you in the right direction.
Paladins have Great Gods, Warlocks have Lesser Gods (if gods at all)
fair I suppose
I mean paladins can still be guided by deities and dark entities
they're based on willpower
Warlocks can have mainstream gods, it's just uncommon.
Is a warlock and their patron similar to a deal with a demon trope?
it can be yes
That's the classic one. Devils, typically.
devils i'd argue are the closest to faustian bargains as Mr Smith put it
demons it's a 50/50 they uphold their bargain
The concept has been much diluted over the years - or expanded, depending on your POV - but classically, the Warlock has a Faustian bargain with a demon or devil; the warlock could either be amoral and in search of greater power no matter the cost, or, like the character Wyll in Baldur's Gate 3, a good guy who makes a deal with devils; a personal sacrifice for a greater good
Devils may play by their own rules but at least they have them. Demons, not so much.
But at its core it's the notion of the Deal with the Devil, aka the Faustian Bargain:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deal_with_the_Devil
I will give you power but....I want something in return
Which can make for interesting and dramatic situations
then there's yugoloths, finicky contract makers
I remember a campaign I watched once, the Warlock wanted to be free from his deal, and by the end, he was free of the deal, but the demon was still there. he asked the demon why he was still there? All The demon said was "because ride or dies don't quit good buddy"
I made an Archfey Warlock who won his powers from an Archfey fair and square in a card game.
Wordle today 🙂
The Archfey had no continued hold nor leverage over the Warlock, but it did have a vested interest in him.
The climax of my exandria campaign had the rogue who accidentally stole power from asmodeus killed them so in the epilogue I narrated them as having lost their warlock powers
Hello people
No spoilers please.
Hellur
Yeah I tried to avoid that
Ik its a lot to ask but can any body teach me DnD like idk anything but im extremely intrested
My first warlock was a faustian bargain type situation where he wanted revenge and the patron gladly offered the tools. The second time was just a victim in a really bad circumstance where she was infected by a creature that killed her caravan, making her a parasite warlock
Check out #learn-to-play and then maybe the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
i like the peaceful warlock bargain where you're just employed
i just joined a few posts that said they are new player friendly and they helped me out
I'm still learning the ropes myself, bud
One of my warlocks got frostbite of the lungs for bothering her patron too much.
Well it is alot
Like A lot
do u have any specific questions ? @pseudo yarrow
I mean i dont know the basics or how to even get started in the first place
Word of advice for ye new players:
No D&D is better than bad D&D, if you don't vibe with a group in one way or another or something is very off-putting.. DON'T force yourself to stay in that situation, you can always find a new game :p
do u watch any youtube videos like ccr or something that could help with learning
Thank you for that
Nope like i jus started but can u dm me sum if u got any suggestions ?
Check out #dnd-newcomers and to get started, plenty there.
Will do and thank ya
I had this goblin drawn out, Crut, he would describe himself as, an amateur thief, a full-time drifter, and a practicing alcoholic
Sounds like a horrid little shit.
If only we had room in our Waterdeep party, he'd fit in with that lot!
Wouldn't be surprised if our waterdeep group gets either arrested or murdered by the Xanathars guild lmao
I'm the Cleric in that group, I hold no moral compass over their heads, because it's not my buisness, but I try to be morally obliged when I can be assed to do so
Said cleric is also a tortle :>
It alr happened, Toby was arrested during downtime.
Yeah, but not long term.
yeah I got him out
Exactly!
It all worked out
I'm lucky like that
"A year ago a mountain witch cursed me with soberity, I NEVER BEEN SO MURDEROUS!!!"
-Crut
Can't wait to explain to authorities that I only associate with you two through house ownership
We're roommates. Oh my god, we're roommates.
Sadly, I'm stuck with Hokrun and Toby!
Ahan and Emios don't bug me as much smh
Would my goblin character fall under rouge?
Hokrun is a very reasonable man
I'd probably say based purely off stereotypes yes, but It could be any class tbh, maybe except paladin or cleric.
Hokrun and Toby would actually be the type of people Artanza would help educate if they gave him the time, he was a librarian for a reason lol
Maybe one day once I get tired of playing hokrun so abbrasively
(Never)
Crut is many things, a cleric he is NOT
You COULD be a Cleric
A Trickery Cleric
wait tokii what did you do for your downtime?
Just be a Charlatan and use your illusions to trick people and steal stuff and be like "oh yeah, praise be, ect ect.. I wonder how much that ladies bracelet would sell for.."
How long does it last?
Artanza got to work converting his room, he's making plans to help restore the bar place of the manor to its former glory... so we can also potentially have an income, lmao
From memory it lasts for a minute
Here are the details: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2618899-flame-blade
I'll put some money towards that. I earned an atrocious amount pit fighting.
is dnd beyond updated yet with the new handbood for classes etc?
I rolled my pit fighting checks and amongst the 9 I rolled, I didn't roll below a 17, all of them rolling flat. Something like 4 nat 20s as a part of it
it sounds like they're praying in latin but they're actually praying "hey (cleric's god's name) how much could i get for that lady's bracelet?"
If anythings gonna form any friendships in our party, is majority of our mutual love for alcohol
When Crut gets arrested he always has 2 tricks up his sleeve
Plan A: kicked down the cell door and beat the crap out over every gaurd he can find like the hot mess goblin degenerate that he is.
Plan B: bribery
"you're only an alcoholic when you start drinking alone"
Think about how awesome the Bars gonna be eventually, Hokrun and Toby could be bodyguards, Ahan could be a bartender, Emios could be a performer or whatever (or vice-versa for those two) and Artanza could do the management and paperwork and such
Hokrun is the personality hire
We'll turn it into an establishment yet 🧐
Hi im new here
Ehhh, more like the hire through association
Greetings!
Thanks
i just got back, why is volo on the ban list?
who is volo and why are we killing them?
a bard who makes stuff up
What’s the diff between an action and a magic action?
Action is an umbrella term for a bunch of different things you can do during your turn. Magic is one type of Action.
Actions you can do during your turn: Attack, Magic, Ready, Help, Dodge, etc
I always like the idea of a bard who had to become a bard, because a curse was put oh him, and now he had to sing EVERYTHING he said
Fun idea, exhausting and annoying to actually do. I've done it.
I am cursed to do interpretive dance to explain myself!
Sounds like a fun concept for a one shot but I would hesitate doing it for much longer
My stance with all things voices: if they aren’t very easy to do, you’re gonna get tired
Uhh this is a bit confusing for me i just read the books
Maybe cursed to talk in ryhme?
Same issue
Yeah now that I think about it
You will find it difficult with time
To always talk in rhyme
Similarly, rhymes are hard to think of. For a longer campaign you might need hundreds or thousands of rhymes
You'll end up thinking about rhymes so long that you don't actually end up speaking.
It kinda undercuts your ability to speak & RP as a character
I'll stick with my degenerate, alcoholic goblin then
I'm a vocalist and a lifelong choir member, also was a Disney kid. When I took on the curse of singing everything it was actually pretty fun, but you better be prepared (HA!) and warm up your voice ahead of gaming.
Speaking of undercutting ability to speak. Kenku. I know they cannot talk unless its words or things they have heard before, but could they just carry a notebook and write everything?
They don't have that anymore, it was way too annoying.
You may wish to ask in #dnd-newcomers
But what is confusing to you?
Plus it’s a difficult thing to adhere to because realistically they can remake any individual words and string a sentence from them cut together
Like on a purely practical / realistic level
Truth. I always felt that well, if they just hung out in a tavern for an hour, they would have quite a repitore to speak already
Is it just me
Or are most bard charismatic twits with overactive libido?
I mean for me that's just a stereotypical joke of them, most that I've seen are music loving folk with a small amount of trauma
Ah, like all musicians
sounds like i should play bard... Does a large amount of trauma work?
I mean at the right tables yeah lol
lol
I remember a video
A great dragon appeared before the party, and smiled at one of them and said, "Hello lover" and everyone's eyes immediately went to the bard, " what are you looking at me for!!??" And another person spoke "actually my ex is referring to me" and everyones eyes fell on the cleric
Never laughed so hard in my life
What a twist
Reminds me of the time a party sent the bard to negotiate with the dragon
Are most barbarians stupid? Are most wizards old? Are most rogues edgy? (Don't answer the last one)
HA
Are all paladins self righteous
Are all elves egotistical?
Truth is, you can flavor your character in any way you want. I have a magical girl warlock.
Theres a stereotype for almost every class
I think the term is "superior"
Fighters all hate magic, it is known.
Not always. The bard im playing is a young eladrin elf who is more into busking in the streets, playing at taverns and listening in on conversations to gain intel. he has never once tried to seduce anything. rather he relies on smooth talking and etiquette to get what he wants.
For some reason though, bards usually are the one I go after first for trauma. Not prioritizing them but its a funny coincidence
Truth is that most class stereotypes are just reductions of the class to a simplistic degree.
The bard isn't defined by their charisma, they're defined by how they're a source of inspiration to others.
That's the one thing they can do that no one else can.
Any ideas how i can flesh out my goblin character better?
What class are you going with for your goblin?
#character-discussion but yeah
Sorry to butt into your conversation but I love this idea for a bard, my only question though is wouldn't smooth talking be considered a form of seduction
Eldritch knights constantly having internal monologues and crises.
Not really, just means you're good at saying the right things to appeal to people
I suppose so but Locke doesnt flirt or try to bed anyone. He just talks to people in the way he knows they want to be spoken to.
Same
I see
"I know you have been slighted in the past, but if you look at me and my friends, do you truly see anyone that would do that?"
And the other person replies.
"Are you... coming onto me?"
Who wants to here about a funny animatic i watched where during a tavern brawl, a barred tried picking the fight with an orc, and immediately got his shit rocked
"Oh of course mightly captian of the gaurd. We do profusely appologize for distrupting this event. We are but humble travelers and did not know, could you please point us in teh right direction with you're wealth of knolwedge?"
I haven't played bards as much but when I do, I either play them as a free spirit or just mildly chaotic
If you've seen the dnd movie, the main character is a great example of a bard that doesnt use his libido to accomplish his goals. he uses wit and intelegence
even though is extremely debated if he is even a bard
My crew unfortunately wants to seduce everything🙄 I literally had to look up a guide to dnd bedroom 5e. Great guide btw! Theres so much stuff I can use to debuff my players for making me flirt with them
I think I hit one of my best sessions just now
Oh?
Or at least, best for a low sleep and half an outline
Which is pretty standard
It was also an experiment and I hit what I wanted to so I'm not gonna be sad about hitting exactly what I wanted lol
You dont have to always have characters interested in the players. I dont care if they roll a nat 20 to seduce. If the npc is not interested in teh character in that way then they wont be. You can have the npc react by being amused by them or charmed in the way of "well thank you for the complient, that was very nice of you" still responding favorably. Not everything has to end in a fade to black
Charisma checks aren't free
if your players insist on bedding everything, start giving them levels of exhaustion for not sleeping properly
I remember I made an npc a lesbian just to hard counter the group XD
No I know and I dont always but I do enjoy when my players have romances in the campaign. 1 it makes my bbeg that much more evil and 2 I find it gets them to roleplay with eachother more too
I just don't engage in romance unless its player led
Honestly, most games should include more lesbian NPCs. Not necessarily for the reasons you mentioned, just because lesbians are neat.
Lesbians are cool
Oh yea I know that guide told me how to break it all down and how to really mess with them😈 Im gonna be evil
We love yuri in DND
Eh, sexualities in my campaign were never vital. Not that it doesn't exist, just not a large focus other than the characters might meet a spouse to an npc
Just remember, if an npc doesnt want to sleep with the character, no amount of charisma checks are gonna help.
I also just don't bring it up
Charisma checks aren’t magic
Do you guys think its better to predetermine preferences for your npc's or just roll them if the situation comes up and add it to their sheet?
If you wanna romance you lead it, and then I'll think about whether it makes sense
What kind of preferences
Eh, I just think whatever I feel would work for em
Unironically I just make everyone aroace pan bi or whatever I think works best
Ive had plenty of fun having characters they really like turn them down even after a really high charisma roll
You know what, i realized my bard did 'kind' of flirt with an NPC but that was purely to gain a boon from her. Was a vampire lord lady and when she admited she missed eating sugary treats he offered to eat a bunch of cupcakes and let her have some of his blood if she would do a favor for him. i dont know if that counts
Because if a player really wants romance i'm not gonna not give it
I'm just never going to start it let alone force it
I mean I would def feel seduced by this but Idk how everyone else feels🤣
My strixhaven campaign i have npc's who can be romanced, but they have to have a heart emoji by their name
I think the answer to this should be informed by the group itself.
For one of my home games, it's basically one giant dating sim. So if there's an NPC a player wants to get closer to, regardless of what I had planned, there's a really high chance I'll say it's possible - and then start building challenges/situations around that.
In other games, if romance and attraction aren't going to be part of the story and then we find ourselves in this situation, that's probably a good time to hit the pause button (when possible) and see if the goals have changed. ✌️
Knowing my crew Ill just write it in the npc backstories🤣
My best friend literally had me homebrew her a succubus character. Which was awesome but like come on
I do not enjoy doing romance stuff my self with my characters. I tend to write characters that either are incapable of it (too young/naive or innocent to understand, too involved in a life goal to care, ect...)
Welp i refined my character to go from having 9 AC to having 17 AC... now i kind of want to go back because it will be funnier this way
Nothing wrong with that! Even a dm can have limits on what they're willing to do!
Though it does remind me of the jokes we kept making in which one of our parties paladins didn't have an expressed sexuality but they kept getting into lesbian esk moments with other PC's XD
Im working on a kenku wizard whos love is fire. and also fire. Former minion to a evil wizard who was taken in as the obligitory pet minion to a party of heroes for a while. This character is gonna have no desires other than 'can i burn it?"
Kenku are lowkey slept on! I have one as a shopkeep! Good luck stealing from him😈
She's so gonna latch onto one of the party members and call them Boss and be a great little yes man and hype man 😄
That made me think of beau from the mighty nein🤣
Reminds me of one of the Digimon games where they defaulted to male gender when writing so when you pick female character, game puts L into LGBTQ+
are they sleept on, i guess you can put their feathers into a pillow
I feel like owlin feathers would be better
Torn on making my wizard an envoker for the boost to cantrip fire stuff, or go wand lore cause you know, raven + stick
One of my next characters is gonna be a Kenku, mayhaps
My Owlin Glamour Bard would agree, Owlin are simply the best birds
you can always go for conjurer for those sweet elemental summons boosts
Becky does love sticks
Kenku Moon Druid named "Dog"
He barks, one hell of a little party animal though.. 🤔
He got that DOG in him
My campaign lacks a lot of cities so animal type humanoids are very potent in this one I have tons of bird types because theyre great
her name is Cinder Snaps and her familiar is a raven who is her 'brother'
"I refined my character" and it's just putting armor on.
My Celestial Warlock freaked out my friends imp familiar last night, he instantly knew it was only disguised as a crow and had put a dagger to its throat before being talked down by the party after he initially met them. (He's a replacement character for my Paladin that died)
You gotta give her a scene where she recreates that one edit of mustang getting his revenge in FMA
nah, i had to change the starting class to a fighter because its a warlock with dex dump
"When you've lived in Menzobaranzen your entire life, your nose grows keen to fiends in disguise."
Menzobarranzen mentioned
What do fiends smell like
Sulfur, probably.
"Evil. And Shit."
Brimstone
oppression and sulfer 😄
Yup, my Celestial Warlock is a Drow lad from Menzo, he made a pact with a chosen of Mystra and was summoned to Sigil by the Wizards three
Depends on the type
Demons, Fiends or Yuggoloths
He's very Anti-Fiend, but he's okay with the Pit Fiend that sells meat and the other who owns a magic shop in Sigil lmao
sniffs the air is it just me or does that bird smell like vegimite on toast.. i think its an imp
I like to occaisionally throw my pact havers a curveball and have them make con saves to test their devotion to their chosen deity or specifically make them make choices that go against their deities wishes
"Smells like corruption and high self-placed value. Definitely a pathetic little imp in disguise. "
I can't wait to drop the generational trauma of that lad regarding fiends on the party lmao
i've had a concept for a Celestial Warlock who wouldn't like Celestials, because their patron was banished from the Astral Plane for being a pernicious little worm
Nah he is just a flesh puppet controlled by Oblex, know the difference
"My mother was gutted and eaten by a Fiend and my bastard father ran off with a succubus. Figured I'd do a little better for myself."
Is that something mentioned during Session Zero?
"So i married an incubus"
"So I found a Deity that actually appreciates my existence. "
Well, someone who was Chosen by a Deity in her own life, that someone is deceased, but she's still his Patron
So ill play a warlock whose patron is a cat who is also the familiar pact of the chain. He demands treats, pets but also dont touch me
Wouldn't that mean you constantly fail and succeed?
Most of my Warlocks haven't had familiars, I feel most of them are burdened by their pact enough lol
Is this cat capable of granting you magic powers?
"pets but also don't touch me" 😭
It is now
If my Drow fella had a familiar it'd probably be a Skeleton because it doesn't have a mind enough to be a nuisance to him lol
Obviously it can grant powers. 😄
That's just a cat.
To be honest, Warlocks ranged from "We are buisness partners" though "I sold my soul" to "I steal internet from my patron and he didn't catch on yet"
yea it was in reference to a message about a cat patron lol
Oh, forgive, am used to the messages being linked
Forget to give kitty his nightly treats exactly when he wants them? you loose spell slot for the day out of spite 😄
One of my past Warlocks was a Nothic/Cyclops fellow who had a Parasite in his brain who was his Patron, he often swapped between two voices, one of his own and the other of his Patron, he was slightly unhinged but he was a Merchant, his pact allows him to see the values of treasures but his Patron must live in his brain for him to do so, it was pretty neat, actually lol
You didn't feed me five minutes after I ate dinner? No food spells for you.
i know that, of the warlocks i've contemplated, their patron is usually very distant because the pact itself is all they actually need of their warlock
Accidentally scratch too close to the tum tum. Youre magic is more likely to fail for 24 hours
My current warlock is simply a buisness partner to their patron, she crafts stuff for them they pay with power
perks of working for DAO
to recover your spell slots, you need to sit still for 8 hours and not move, allowing kitty to rest on your lap undisturbed
Do you ever think a retired adventerer would find a random person to be a Warlock patron to because they're bored?
Probably!
Imagine just giving a random somebody fireball just to see what happens
I could see my old Aarakocra Divine Soul Sorcerer being a Patron to someone if he wasn't deceased, he was level 20
Lowkey I tried to make one of my players do this with their character from the campaign before but they wanted to be aphrodites cleric instead🙄
Aphrodite is the most beautiful patron ever, totally not saying that so she won't smite me.
Speak for yourself, Mephistopheles all the way baby
like one of them had to deal with a God In And Of Exile, who was using their soul to return to the material plane after being banished to a land beyond time but not space, where the god itself couldn't move as you need time to produce motion, but it was able to latch onto their soul while it was on the way to the afterlife, allowing a pact to be made where the Warlock and their body would use its power, their soul acting as a tether that would drag them out of the banished place
Oh dont get me wrong they came up with a great backstory and played the character perfectly but I was still kinda bummed about the other one
How, dare you bring such into question?
On a side note, which lore is Mephistopheles from?
Eh, something to hold in storage for later.
There is an actual spell who's sole purpose is to inspire others to great deeds
"Aphrodite? She's a 5/10 at the maximum, myself however?.. Hah, I have her beaten In spades, I'm the baddest [censored] to ever walk the feywilds~"
-Caspian Goldengale, THE Owlin Glamour Bard of all time
Forgotten realms Mephistopheles
Okay, thank you.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/188142-motivational-speech
Yes im talking about third level spell "Motivational Speech"
I saw his pic, I read his lore, I fell in love
The best spell ever (trust)
Why do that when fireball/eldritch blast exists?
I don't think I have a favorite Deity in the Forgotten Realms yet, but it might be Bahamut because he's my flower child baby boy.
I should really read more on the forgotten realm deities. I want to make characrers more in line with dnd lore and naming conventions
My favorite Faerun deity is Eilistraee.
Lowkey Ive never played a true to dnd lore campaign. I need to try it
My favorite is currently Umberlee, Tempus and Beshaba
Why do anything, i say because of the sheer boredom
Fireball is just a big AoE, BOOOOOOOOORING
Nah Mephistopheles is an archdevil
I’m a big fan of Ilmater myself
My allegiance is to those below, not above
If i wanted to just kill enemies, i would be playing a fighter
If you dont hit atleast half your team with the fireball was it really a fireball?
Two of my favorite deities are from Theros
Iroas, the God of Victory
And
Mogis, the God of Slaughter
They're brothers, both War Gods, but one (Iroas) is a Centaur and the other (Mogis) is a Minotaur!
Lmao
the party just consantly smells like burning hair due to the fireballs
If i want to kill my team i just cast Summon Greater Demon and fail the save
Is it possible to turn DnD campaign into World of tanks with artificer-only party?
They're also supposed to be twins
Absolutely! Do it!!! And dont forget one of them has to be named tonky
i have a funny Fighter + Warlock combo where you Action Surge Action: Attack (2) with a Warhammer to push them back 20 feet with the Push mastery, then use Repelling Blast as a cantrip through your Standard Action to launch them back an additional 10 (30 ft total). it's a very silly combo lol
Also name the 2nd artificer, Cooler Tonky
Ok. Which tanks should we make? KV-2? IS-3? MAUS? AT15A?
Maybe name one Short Tonky? You gotta have a short one
Where is the Crasher Feat?
Crusher?
I dont know any of them but the m1 abrams
Same thing
Also, don't forget to be a Minotaur for their bonus action push after they attack, though that requires a save :p
Bro, I said "World of Tanks", not "War Thunder"
Could probably do this with Open Hand Monk alone?
Also true
Btw congratulate me. I will be able to play my main character soon and comfortably for other people
New feat homebrew "Crasher" when you constantly roll nat 1s so you flip the board to instantly kill any bbeg
True, lastly, we need to name one Tall Tonky
maybe, but i already had a plan for a Battlemaster Warlock that i wanted to throw that combo onto just for the comedy of launching someone back my full movement speed
I dont play either of them! Thats literally the only tank I know of
Bro doesn't know Maus 💀💀💀
Crasher.
If I roll a NAT 1 on an important save or ability check I can jump across the table at the DM
you could optimize the combo but i only need it for the one-off funny thing
make an attack roll against the DM, if you hit, you punch lmao
Crash Out feat lmao
"Counter-crasher" for $5 any nat 1 can be instantly turned into a nat 20
Btw do you people feel Jolly already?
Ngl i think I'm in one of the most perfect ranger campaigns
The Dm trying to have a normal game
Me failing a save with a nat 1 and launching myself across the table at Mach speed to slaughter them:
make a roll, go dead silent, and then leap at the first person to ask what's wrong
What's a perfect Ranger campaign?
Lots of wilderness to explore and animals to tame?
Because we actually don't have that much combat, not many social interactions, a lot of exploration and actual travel through the wilderness
Fun!
Yup! Too bad we're all playing charisma casters except the fighter
Monster Hunter: Wilds
Whats an ophidimancer?
I love social interactions.
Except I always dump Charisma
Hello all I am new here and wanted some advice for the world I am creating
Serpent Mage, basically?
Snake Wizard!!!
A crit would be using brass knuckles
You'll want to go to #dm-world-building
I've gotta switch characters as soon as my character arc ends somewhat. I think me constantly rolling with advantage and on the wild magic table is getting on my dms nerves
Appreciate it
Ah ... not so fun, then?
part of the comedy that is my Battlemaster Warlock is gonna be having extremely high CHA and dumping Strength
Best of luck💜
Rules of Nature (From MGRR) plays as I propel myself across the table at the nearest person who asked if I was okay
If not for tides of chaos i don't think we'd even explore that much with our stats
Oh duhhh sorry Im smoov brained
Schmoov
Nope, none of that negative self talk!
AC check irl 🔥🔥
Ngl using charisma for sword fighting must be the funnies thing if you try to rationalise it
Art thou excited for Rogues return to Titanic Upheaval?
Thing got less rinkles than a freshly plastered wall
That makes sense, you're going full caster after 3 Battlemaster?
Tbh if i played my character as if they were a real person i think they'd quit adventuring by now
"That's quitter mentality! Now, help me beat up this Tarrasque!"
nah i'm going 5-5 Celestial Warlock Battlemaster Fighter
I regret multiclassing on my bard/warlock. I shoulda went straight bard. I've always found multiclassing holds me back in way of characters
That's kind of what I'm telling myself. But actually, considering they had a building fall on them, a ghost cry on them which caused them to nearly die, a dragon literally kill them after which they came back as a halfling and now have to go fight spider riding dwarves while having arachnophobia
oh nice
Sounds like an issue of skill
Me, personally? I'd punch the ghost, eat the dwarves to assert dominance and mate with the spiders to become the king of Australia! /joking
Take a level in wizard too
Get the free access to a spell book
I tried punching the ghost and i think i even hit it, but then it cried, i failed a single save, my hp automatically became 0 and i got 1 level of exhaustion at the start of the day essentially
I now am imaginging a halfling with a strong australian accent being like "awe, its just'a little spider, nuthin to worry about"
Should've punched it HARDER
As for your ideas of dealing with dwarves and spiders, I'll just stay 120ft away and casting sorcerers burst because there's no way I'm walking any closer to those 8 legged demons
Give me some strength points and i would have
I can't give you my strength, it'd be too overwhelming for you
Sounds like this character needs the Ruined background. Just cursed with terrible luck
Is it just me, or does the charger feat seem really strong on rogues? Specifically swashbucklers
How do you do that if the spiders are gargantuan size
Watch me.
Have you tried using Royal Guard
Devil may cry reference
So, what are your favorite low rarity magic items?
the fridge
the fridge?
the one that allows you to preserve food longer
Chest of Preserving (finally found the name)
Cuz you could store multiple hearts of ice trolls and save them for until when you need them
As opposed to having a 24 hour timer
how often do you hunt trolls in your game
Hey I’m thinking of running a spores druid, but I read everywhere that going a melee type build is bad for combat? Is this correct?
Sometimes (it does come in handy tho)
no
druids dont really have the tools to be super impactful in melee
except Moon druid I guess
For anyone who witnessed my first crash out over the problem player in my game, I have bad news.
They never stopped. I had to leave before we even got a real session 0
they do have quite the durability and some melee cantrips on top of huge area control spells
Guess its time to get to a new table🤷🏻♀️🥹
yeah the only issue with spores druid is the action to get your good stuff, as well a reaction costs you might want for other stuff
Yeah.
Every time I've tried to play DnD, it's always been stopped.
Isnt it like action attack bonus action flame sphere and react for halo?
its just that the action economy is bad and number of attacks is too low. and those control spells are easier to place from far away
i mean symbiotic entity costs an action to activate and is the only way to make halo a decent use of reaction, and give you the best temp HP in the game. It's just the action cost of that usually plus shillelagh takes your while turn whereas a moon druid can bonus action shape into a bear and start knocking heads
First time was a lack of people and supplies, second was scheduling issues, and this time was the "seduction only" bard stereotype.
Don't give up
Good tables exist
and ill say it is ten minutes, which is in the weird place where it has the ability to be precast but not as easy to do so compared to stuff like hour long things
At this point, I doubt it.
Don't blame you for doubting,
But they do 🙂
i played a spores druid for like ten levels, and i think i mostly just used the spells the sub granted you
if you quit before session 0, how do you know theyd play the bard like that
Our DM never showed up and told us to just make characters
oh so it wasnt because of the bard stereotype player but because the DM is neglecting
It was the bard.
They made their character to only seduce everyone. Including party members.
How would you guys describe an old ship creaking as it sails through rough weather?
I'm stuck on "the ship creaks like old man's joints." Or "the ship creaks and moans like a sick dog"
Rickety
Got any druids in the party? Animal lovers? If not, run with the first.
would the perspective be from inside the ship? I could imagine using other senses would be helpful
Add some leaks
Yeha would be while on the ship's bow as they approach an island with rough tide
some smells might be interesting. I don't really know how boats smell but i imagine not pleasant
but thats prob more on the lower decks
Rotting wood?
Old, damp carpet?
Hey! Im new to the community and wondered if yall have any tips
YALL I DM IN THREE HOURS 💪🏽💪🏽 i have a HUGE question what are DMS rolling for NPCS and how do you get the stats!
I don't give NPCs stats that often. When I do, I just reskin something from the monsters: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creature-stat-blocks
just give it the stats you want it to have
why roll? give it the stats you believe make for the most fun NPC to meet as a player
NPCs don't need stats unless you expect them to be involved in combat
Otherwise, as razorwing says grab an entry from the Monster Manual, and don't forget you can always reskin - take a Bandit or Town Guard and make it something else.
With experience, you can devise your own monsters/NPCs.
youre the dm. you build their experience. why leave it to chance?
Sick thank you everyone!
Hi I don’t expect anyone to say yes but I am new to DnD and I am wondering if any1 can teach my how to play
Yep, one-on-one teaching isn't likely here, but #learn-to-play and the pinned resources in #dnd-newcomers should get you going!
Is it not possible to have both the pride role and a class role?
Just one, I think.
I see. Thank you!
Yoo man
I hope you are doing well.
Thank you! You as well.
Ohh that's amazing friend
What are you doing today?
Working all day. You?
Alright
Same thing I'm also working
Where do you work if you don’t mind me asking? Mine has DnD stuff in it but I wanna make sure we aren’t gonna be talking in the incorrect channel haha
I'm making some digital stuff and that's my work friend
been thinking
if a sorcerer becomes a mind flayer would they retain any magical abilities from their bloodline?
I don't know lol
Oooh, probably yeah
then again
would the flayer even use them? from what I understand they typically dislike normal forms of magic
But they’d be outcast, right? Cause mind flayers look down on arcane over psionic?
wonder if they'd have better psionic capabilities though
Cause arcane mind flayers exist in canon I’m pretty sure. I wonder if the psionic and arcane would clash too much and they’d only be able to pick one or the other?
psionics are a form of magic
e.g. the telekinesis spell
same as arcane or primal magic are forms of magic
All psionics are magic but not all magic is psionics type of thing?
yes
That makes sense, especially with the new psion class thing
Humans are underrated
I mean like arcane
Interesting opinion. Explain.
They’re so versatile for roleplaying. Also the ability score increase is nice
I’m talking about the 2014 ones. 2024 is good too, though
Do you think other species are less versatile?
personally I think that part of the issue is how some races are portrayed
Yeah, it takes a lot more work to explain an orc wizard, for example. Or elf barbarian
All species are versatile role-playing wise. Because species can have as big or as low an impact on role-playing as you want
Other races usually have their own cultures that fit towards a certain narrative
And humans don’t
e.g. githyanki are much more interesting when they're not brainwashed by vlaakith
or hell
after they've simply spent enough not in a creche or in battle
Here is me explaining a human wizard: I apprenticed under a master.
Here is me explaining an orc wizard: I apprenticed under a master.
Here is me explaining a human barbarian: I'm strong and have anger issues.
Here is me explaining an elf barbarian: I'm strong and have anger issues.
Humans are more flexible in that regard, like humans can be tree hugging Druids but tree hugging Dwarves are a lot more rare, or Githyanki being anything but militant
I think that’s more dependent on how you play them. There’s always an explanation
Yeah, sure, but you have to work that into their backstory
from what I've gathered creche's are purposefully built to be echo chambers
What would you all say is the best epic boon for a fighter? I’m kinda stuck between energy resistance or combat prowess
With humans you can do whatever with no explanation
People subconsciously just accept backstories if you say "oh this is xxx class, he's a human"
I feel like you have to as a human as well. Any backstory without a reasoning as to why they are what they are is.. an interesting choice
Sorry, I worded that wrong. I meant more like… humans have a lot more options to be any one thing
not really
Other races are a bit more limited in what lifestyles make sense leading up to that point
They don't. They have exactly as many options as anyone else
again not really
That’s the whole point of a backstory. Showing how they got to where they are. Maybe it’s more complicated as other species, but that’s less versatility and more complications.
Don’t want it to be super complicated? Boom, they were adopted, lol
All the culture is no longer a whole “rule stickler will complain” deal.
Writing backstories is super fun
definitely not true
One of my favorite parts of character building!!
I absolutely love writing
I am elf barbarian that attack aggressively so my opponents have no breathing room and can’t think so easily for someone have to do it
How so exactly? What prevents an orc from becoming the apprentice of a wizard, or practicing martial arts, or making a pact with a fiend?
Barbarian being angry people is a trope I hate
Holga Kilgore peak barbarian not angry. Heartbroken
HOLGA MY LOVE
What prevents a strong elf from picking up a heavy weapon and eschewing armour?
There’s some species that synergies well with classes, you can come up with a lot of great combinations of species and classes
Never heard of them but that sound great
She is the Barbarian from Honor Among Thieves
The dungeons and dragons: honor among thieves movie!!
Genuinely one of my favorite movies ever.
Improvised weapon potatoes forever!
Nothing, just mechanical synergy with magic if you don’t pick the wood elf
Human is pretty free-flow because of their extra origin feat, but it is by no means the best
Agree
Or, by no means the only option
All species are great in their own ways
So humans do not have more options and it is certainly not "role-playing versatility". It's just that some species synergize slightly better with some classes.
I think it was more of the claim it was the most versatile than the claim that others can’t do it
Yeah, one of my favorites is Goliath, their potential teleportation or extra fire damage or damage tanking is pretty good
Versatility was just the wrong word to use, haha
Yes
The "humans can do whatever no explanation needed" argument is nonsense. Because it is true of everyone.
Goliath rune knight fighter my beloved
It really is ridiculous
That’s a bit of strong wording 😭
Other species even have pre built cultures that can fit them within canonical settings like Realms lore.
An elven barbarian might be a member of the Rashemen Berserkers or a Wild Elf from the Chondalwoodn, or a Lythari from the haunted Halls of High Watch.
Incorrect opinions shouldn’t lead to insulting them..
Or the lore of a campaign that don’t follow dnd lore to a T
Or it could just be a sun elf from Silverymoon who became stronger than average and decided to capitalize on that
An Orcish druid could be a member of the Ondonti a tribe of orcs that worships Eldath in the great Steppe north of the Moon sea.
Is a character generally considered dead if they were forcefully sent into the Nine Hells?
I find leaning into a settings cultures to be more fun. Than tall man plays basketball because man is tall.
No
Did they die?
That’s fair
Nah, just sent there by a BBEG or smth
Then they’re not dead
You simply gotta bring them back somehow
The dead don’t typically go to the Nine hells anyway
Everyone who dies go to the Fugue plane
Exactly
I thought they would be "dead" solely of how difficult it is to get out by themselves
With plane shift. It's pretty simple in theory
I mean there’s quite a few ways to escape the hells no?
Is it possible to hire a hireling level 1 wizard who knows the resistance cantrip and just hides in your pocket constantly concentrating on resistance
I mean it like in a Tier 2 setting
Is the hireling a pixie?
The other way would be using a portal, but good luck finding one that leads to where you need
My character would be huge
Worst case scenario, it leads into one of the layers of the Abyss
True, much simpler in theory than execution
Easy answer, find a portal
Complicated answer, find a portal that doesn’t take you somewhere worse.
The DnD rules don't support player characters of that size. But I would rule that constantly concentrating would give Exhaustion levels, and even still the caster themselves can't be worn or carried.
That is a problem. Have you considered making a devil deal for your friend's return?
There’s ways to become huge, and even up to gargantuan
Not permanently.
Yes, but during combat you can keep it up decently well
I dont mind as long as its not Asmodeus
No need to involve Asmodeud in this.
At the level required to make such a set up work. Resistance is a spell not needed.
Asmodeus surely wouldn't care lol he'd just leave it to his archdevils
Hey I’m looking to find a dm to run a curse of strand campaign
Level 3 is the earliest you can become huge
Just find a way to contact a devil of some standing, get a lawyer, have a lot in persuasion for the haggling part. Ideally you want a contract where the devil pledges that your friend will be safely returned in exchange for a few services.
Depending on the layer of hell you're in, an underling of the archdevil that rules the layer may make deals
As for the nine Hells. There are plenty of lower level devils you can scheme with. You don't have to go to the boss. Many devils will make deals to help advance their rank.
Asmedeus and Levistus are the hardest to work with, I suggest earlier levels like Avernus/Zariel
I mean all it takes is a 7th level spell
Would they accept a Warforged lawyer
Ah alrighty
there being no explanation does not make for better roleplay or more versatility. i completely agree that there are tropes that are supported to the point of genuinely perplexing people but that doesnt mean its worse or better
It could easily be an underling of any of the arch devils
More likely to accept a modron lawyer.
Of course. You need a lawyer in the sense that you need someone to look over the contract and make sure you're not getting screwed
Btw now that we're talking about the nine hells
Is there a demonic counterpart to devas?
I thought of cambions but their CR is like 5 compared to a deva's 10
The Baatezu of The Nine Hells are the best lawyers you will find. A lawyer on the Prime would not be of too much help tbh. Get yourself a Modron.
Or... Get another Baatezu.
Yeah but it's an emergency situation. Better to have a lawyer from the prime than to not have one at all
I love role playing Baatezu in Emergency situations.
"I need my lawyer to look over this."
"That's fine. This contract is only valid for the next hour."
(Don't let the devils know it's an emergency. Look as cool and calm as you can)
First rule of haggling: Always give the impression that you will have no issue taking your business elsewhere
Once. I had a demon disguised as a devil.
Did the whole contract thing and everything.
Led to a very good
"Smegaol promised!"
"Smegaol lied."
Kind of moment.
another question
if a vampire became a mind flayer would they have any special abilities?
I have this “imaginary friend” (deity that the character made a deal with so that she’d never be alone) that the dm said he’d let act as an invisible familiar, as long as I don’t use it in battle.
They'd probably only inherit the abilities of the Mind Flayer
There's a vampiric mind flayer in Van Richten's. https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/1680955-vampiric-mind-flayer
In short, yes, they do.
Here's an article on them from the Forgotten Realms wiki: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Vampiric_mind_flayer
If a vampire became a mind flayer or a mind flayer became a vampire?
Lets see what Astarion says
the former
Those are two very different situations.
the latter would probably have more unique attributes
hello 👋
Hello!
👋
A vampire is probably a poor host to a mind flayer considering it's dead.
Well... People don't become mind flayers. Mind flayers are born from killing their host bodies.
Vampire+Mindflayer=Alhoon
Those are liches
I think they’re thinking baldurs gate 3 kind of transformation
Undead mindflayer
The mind flayer is the tadpole. The host is just dead. In the same way that, say, when a wasp lays its egg in a caterpillar, the caterpillar doesn't become a wasp
Oh wow they basically become non-intelligent monsters only really useful for moisturiser
Astarion is a hyper unique case since I don't think there is anything like him in the millions of pages in Realms Lore.
No?
I mean his circumstance is pretty unique
Yeah the Astarion situation is really only explained by the weird way the magic that binds the Absolute, the magic in the Cube, the magic of the Emperor and the weirdness of those tadpoles interact.
The answer is basically they become less intelligent mindflayers
Yes but vampires don't become mind flayers. Because nobody becomes a mindflayer.
yo
You are born a mindflayer or you are not.
does anybody play dolmenwood
That’s why I thought maybe they meant the baldurs gate 3 situation where you literally get fully transformed into one through magic lol
that link doesn't talk about what I mentioned though
I was talking a vampire who got infected, not the tadpole
Im also fairly certain ceramorphisis requires a living host as well
The vampire is dead
ik ceremorphosis kills the person with the tadpole
Ceremorphosis is not an infection. It's something killing you then using your body to transform
Then what’s the question?
A Vampire with a mindflayer tadpole doesn’t get additional powers. Just a death sentence really
If a vampire was killed and a mind flayer born from it. It would be a standard Mind Flayer.
it's shorter than saying "who has a tadpole" and you still understood what I said
i am a mossling knight a w person
only the hosts conciousness dies in ceramorphasis
I'm not sure I actually understand what you're saying actually
Vampiric Mind Flayer comes when the tadpole is infected with Vampirism.
I mean at that point its best to follow how bg3 does it
The body continues to live under mindflayer authority
As a vampire turned mind flayer you inherit the mind flayer's abilities
ok prolly best to just ask an overarching question then
do we know if a mind flayer has any special abilities if the host of their tadpole was abnormal in some way?
I suddenly don't feel so bad about a decision I made in bg3 if that's what ceremorphosis actually is
e.g. if they were a sorcerer or a vampire
Bg3 ceremorphosis is entirely different 😭
Unfortunately my current play through has me stuck dealing with Raphaels punk ass in the house of hope
Weird Orpheus-Absolute magic stuff
Oh! Yes of course. Gnome ceremorphosis for example is different. Tadpoles injected in beholders, in ettins... All give you a very different mind flayer
They may inherit some of the abilities if the host
iirc it's flat out said the tadpoles are modified
If a mind flayer tells you he remembers who he was. He is lying to you.
I know that different species do result in a different effect but like
Wait fr? Cuz I was just gonna take what was said about Ceremorphosis as canon, like if I choose to be converted to a mind flayer I'd die, and I'd rather not die that way
Being a sorcerer would not in theory change anything. Sorcery is in your soul, not body
if a normal human and a human sorcerer was infected would the resulting mind flayers have any differences?
The tadpole can and often does eat the memories of the host.
Funny how I beat bg3 once but my grasp of what makes the player's tadpole is still incomplete
Fr 😭.
I still don't get that whole destroying people's souls thing
Yeah but those memories aren't the tadpole's
Nope. Sorcery is in the soul, not body. But the illithid, from eating the memories, might be more curious about magic than the average
I'm reading the forgotten realms wiki and it says the tadpole eats the brain and transforms the body.
I can't think of a practical reason for it
The tadpole is posing. It's like the Asian Jim joke in the office.
or hell for something a bit more dramatic
Playing a paladin this playthrough, have every tadpole chilling still in gales inventory, around 12 of them. Trying not to use any options relying on use of tadpole, instead relying on the paladins oath
I don't know if it destroys the soul to be honest. It might just kill the person, same as any other death
what if a normal human and a human werewolf were infected?
I also think the person just dies
Huge lie.
Oop my bad
would the mind flayer from the werewolf also have lycanthropy?
I'd side with him on a Wyll origin
I got the achievement...
Not a lie if I’m just stupid, right? 😭
that's heavy spoilers and regardless of how much he claims to remember
I made a quicksave to get the squid touching achievement too if you catch my drift...
Host is more or less Non Existent diseases and all
Yeah, the wiki says the host's personality and memory are erased. Likely due to the brain being eaten
Oh shoot, i didn’t even think about spoilers! So sorry! I deleted it now, my sincerest apologies y’all!!
Oh yeah spoilers.
Thank goodness I found out literally last week
For some reason the moment we talk about Raphael we just went full into act 3 spoiler lmao
I love that fiend
he becomes more and more unlikeable the more he talks
Harleep my beloved
Btw to the person struggling against him, use hold monster
It was a blessing. Amen Gale
I also made a quicksave to talk to Harleep too that way 😭
ngl I do think the possibility of a mind flayer actually retaining someone's previous personality too interesting to just hand wave it away by saying it goes against lore
All while dating Wyll because my Tav is a pos
I used a very different strategy
Plus a lot of things in bg3 go against lore. It’s not exactly lore accurate/canon
It's just like an actual dnd campaign, ignoring lore to make one hell of a story
Like Owlbear wild shape
put him in a silence bubble with karlach constantly knocking him prone and making him afraid
he couldn't do anything
Or the nerfs to the short races, those were criminal
25 feet... what were they thinking
even when he got to attack it was only like 7 damage
and couldn't leave the silence bubble
I just used globe of invulnerability.
10 turns of "screw you cant touch me"
oh that reminds me of the barrelmancy video
I used the entire party to form a wall to keep him away from gale as gale took an angellic slumber to regain all the spell slots. It felt like the freaking return of gandalf when gale woke up
can't send it here sadly
Shield Dwarves lost their +2/+2 stats and went back to +2/+1, Rock Gnomes lost their discount Prestidigitation and Forest Gnomes lost Minor Illusion
I'd go further: A mind flayer suffering from the "You are what you eat" disease.
I like that too
Shield Dwarves somehow going from above average to borderline obsolete in one go
BG 3 made a lot of interesting decisions. Many from older material. But a lot of their legacy characters imo were done poorly.
Due to a weakness or condition, that mindflayer gets overwhelmed by the brains they eat. They believe themselves to be the last person they've eaten for a few hours after the meal
Dwarves gained a tremorsense ability, it's a huge boost
Bit by bit that mindflayer loses all sense of identity
What tremorsense
Would make playing as a mindflayer in 5e interesting.
Unfortunately needs homebrew
I mean that's how it works in bg3
Way better than just a sack of tool proficiencies
gonna spoil this but ||if Karlach turns into a mind flayer she mentions how each time he eats a brain she loses more of her old self||
literal ending of bg3 spoilers
