As the strongest BP only player on my server, I'm not worried about how hard the armadas are for myself. If I can't kill them, well nearly everyone will just quit the game. My concern is for those that are quitting or skipping the arc because it's already too hard for them and Scopley just made it harder. I have at least a handful of those in my alliance.

I'm willing to believe it wasn't intended to be changed but unless they changed their own stats (in which case scopely has different concerns) someone actively changed them. Seeing how scopely tends to rush player negative changes but needs weeks/months for player beneficial things perhaps some caution going forward would be wise

I'd give it 2-3 more years tops
before they shut it down though it may go into 'maintenence mode' for a while where servers stay up but no new content
that's what some dying games do
they can no longer afford to produce new content but they leave the servers up as long as they are making more money than the servers cost
pretty sure the servers are virtualized (AWS instances) and they may have downgraded the instance -.-
at least the main game servers dunno about the database server which I think is run by Reddislabs
at least the US servers are on AWS dunno about euro/apac
the login server seems to be global though
