Yeah
I get 40gb a monf
It's a slow month when I don't go over 1tb
Im saying i get 40gb a monf of mobile data
I have spotty coverage from att where I live. In some parts of our yard/house I get 2 or 3 bars but in others I get barely one
My wifi usage exceeds 1.5tb
Yeah, and I have unlimited data lol
My parents pay for fiber internet 😎 so I don’t pay extra for fast
i have like 2mbps
I'm constantly downloading many gb of updates and stuff for client systems, and I usually don't bother getting the wifi code
I use up multiple gbs on minecraft. Even though Mc doesn’t take much data xD WiFi of course
wait actlly lermme check
I cantt wait for 3 more years
Ill have a stable job
And steady income
And maybe a keeb that doesnt repeat letters
Whatttt yours too!?
Im doing my bachelors in comp sci rn
Yeah I have a crappy 5$ membrane
oh
My issue was my mouse double clicking, but it was under warranty still so I got a new one and they let me keep the old
My computer keyboard sometimes repeats letters depending on what type of text field. It’s like always the s key, the six key, and the p key. outemu black switches.
the cat or the mouse
The mouse
Quite literally, man jumps on my computer table, sniffs the mouse pad and mouse a few times and decides that that is his pee place
Seee you should get techie. You even go to college so you can help wegg heads.
I had to throw away mouse and mousepad
Yuck.
the pee spot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
…
I have a g502 with the left click fallen off
I have a g402 now with nothing fallen off
ive used it since like 8th grade I think
It was painful to look at.
so true
I have a g700s in nice condition
Oh the escape key on my keeb is broken off
I got it used tho
Like the key cap
I had a cat pee in my box of stuff from when I was in the military. I was pissed, had to replace the uniform parts he ruined
i also got mine used!!!!!!!!1
So I have it cello taped in place so it doesnt fly off whenever i press it
the stuff was also pissed
The stuffs was pissed too
Yeah cats marking territory is the absolute worst
Is it a male cat
Usually but not always males
We have a fixed male who doesn’t mark
we could learn smtn from them!!!!!!!
And our females don’t
…
Im not doing it on my stuff either
Cowards
Although after about 30 minutes all urine turns to ammonia right
ok wait why are we talking abt this
its ruined
We jus talkin bout Linux.
Linux the cat right?
Linux the urinating cat
someone qic name thier cat linux so we can have a discussion about cat piss in #linux-and-android
But the linux and the h in chat is silent
RIGHT
We can quick pretend my cat named Luna us actually named Linux
F’real
wow I need to go to bed
I was going to adopt a cat soon anyway, I'll name him linux
I’m gonna name a cat Plex someday.
What time is it for you
G'night
Gnight
sam,e timezone we are related
Phone is at 2% so I'm going too
We are related but not friends on discord :/
Good night falcie
wow did I just end the linux chat
Ok chipwing. Its time to test ur luck
by sleeping
Kinda
Time to generate an smbios for ur hackintosh
I got a bit carried away it’s so late
Ooh
i have no idea what that words are
I don’t know what that is
U sleepin rn or u free to get to ur pc
good luck :)))))))))))))))
I’m sleeping :/
No I am, when I delete the last 2 hours of chat history and purge the logs
Ahh WE SHALL TEST UR LUCK WHEN YOU AWAKE
so true
Pingy pongy me
I have a heap of school to do tomorrow 😭
ok actually gn
I will when I can :)
Pingy pongy when free then
I’m excited to try
Heh you wont be
It might be Tuesday when I’m free?
When you start doing it
I have vacations till the 15th
So im pretty much free all day till then
Ok nice! How complicated is my part that I have to do?
Not complicated
Just irritating
And time consuming
Which is why ur doing it and not me
Fun!
Basically u have to keep running a keygen and copy pasting to apple warranty check page till you get a serial number that says purchase date not validated
Invalid and valid are both bad
Also apple page allows u to do only like 5 keys before rate limiting u
So u have to use tor browser and spoof a new ip every time rate limit
It took me 3 hours to find my serial number
I use the brave browser which kinda has tor built in, would that work?
It took floppa 5 mins tho which im pissed about
Lol i wanna be a second floppa
IDK never tried that. I know for a fact that tor works tho
Okie :)
Thankfully im just a half eaten tube of thermal paste
Good night
I’ll ping ye when I’m ready
Will do!
hi im awake
Mornin
You got 4 hours of sleep…
so true
I got seven hours of sleep
Cause my mom said I could sleep in some cause I GIMPed that photo for her
Ofc it didn’t take me til 3
Hey me too
Thas so little sleep. Coffee is the magic one. But I don’t even drink coffee
I haven’t been sleeping the best at the hospital either
I can imagine
Do they keep the lights on all night
That’s no fun
Has rawr told you it won’t?
Rawr is the one to ask about hackintosh, but even if you can't you should be able to do a VM
vm yes
but legit no
since 1. Nvidia no longer supported on anything above high seirra
- I dont have a dedicated drive for it
lol
Hey anyone who knows about this, how hard is it to get my correct refresh rate into an Ubuntu or Arch based distribution (if it is an Arch based one I end up with, which is unlikely, it would be Manjaro)?
I am trying many different distros, even some that might be considered niche but has good support, inside of VMs to see what I like the most without modification to start with and none of them have recognized my AOC 144Hz monitor's refresh rate
Yup
There's a nice little program called arandr that let's you control the position, resolution, and refresh rates of your monitors
Ooooh @frank steeple Thank you!
How do I add a resolution/framerate combination to try?
For some reason, in Feren OS atm, I keep being only allowed to select 16:10 or 4:3 aspect ratio resolutions instead of 16:9.
Is that in the vm?
yeah
sorry for the somewhat delayed response as I don't get notification sounds until I get mentioned in Discord.
I still would like to know for when I go to setup it on the system itself whichever distro I end up with.
@frank steeple
It could just be a limit of whatever display system the vm is using, arandr should support 16:9 resolutions just fine
On Windows at least, it was always very simple to go into Nvidia settings or AMD settings and set a custom resolution/framerate it would try even if the display falsely told Windows it couldn't do it.
Is there something like that where you can try a custom resolution (and, if you cannot hit confirm to keep the settings it reverts after 20 seconds) in Linux distros?
Probably, there's the nvidia setting program available in linux too. I'd imagine that amd has a settings app too
@true void yo. I think I’m going to accept your friend req
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
there. I did
🎷🐛
engrish only chat
Oh sorry
I was spam typing on my Greek keyboard
I don’t think it made any real words

engrish? I need this letters be esplained
Did falcie actually delete last nights chat? Xd
Lemme see
Nope he didn’t
It’s still there lollllllllllllllllllllllllllll
linux users whn rhey have a super long discussion abt cat pee 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏
i feel like this chat is less of a linux discussion chat and more of a Hangout For People Who Use It Sometimes
As of recently It Definitely is.
I use Linux as daily driver
Only go back to windows for minecraft bedrock with bros
Also it’s so funny how rawr and I have had allll these discussions about hackintoshs in Linux, not Apple iOS xD
the apple ios chat might beat u to death
That’s true. Tim Cook lives there.
#mac-os-and-ios is his bedroom
And windows and software is his bathroom.
And Linux is the toilet
For all the urine
xD
Says the hackmac man
Which is why i enjoy hackintosh
Ohh I see
Although their hardware isn’t terrible for what it is
Overpriced
But whatever
Too proprietary
i have no experience with macs at all
Same, except I’ve used one at my friends house
I feel like once I know Linux amazingly Intimately I would be able to switch to macOS no hitch. But I think I’ll Stay Linux
I have gotten to the point where ui changes dont rlly do much (desktop environment queen)
Obviously for you xD
desktop environment queen
I can easily switch between gnome and Kde
And I haven’t tried others
I guess the main difference I see is in the system settings app
More options from Kde
so like
do y'all know that one bone that lik
sticks out of ur arm when youre trying to lay your arms and head on a desk
istg so like
i have my pc connected to the tv in the family room
imand its like the best
I love it sm
A lot of bones are in my arm
But honestly it’s p Comfortable
Big screen 🥺
Just don’t like
Look at
Stuff you don’t want people to see
What’s the best VNC app for an iPad?
I want to use my Linux machine from my iPad sometimes.
Also being able to connect to it from a different network is super handy
But I know that requires port forwarding
(From our router)
Yes that's what it is becoming. When that happens, those who are looking for actual discussion and/or help end up going elsewhere rather than spend time sorting through the off-topic comments, etc. So it becomes a downward spiral into general chat. But yeah... whatever. shrug
is linux better at game server hosting then windows 10 or no?
It depends on the game I think, but in my experience with minecraft servers (Java and bedrock) the Ubuntu server performed much better. I was running it off an old i5 laptop with a mediocre ssd and 8gb ram. I used the desktop versions of both OSs, so that the machine was still useable. The windows OS was win. 10 home, and the Linux OS was Ubuntu 20.04 lts with the default gnome desktop.
@rancid socket
i plan on doing fivem(gta) , minecraft, and rust
I can’t speak for other games, but a minecraft server on different OSs with the exact same hardware performed much better on Linux with a desktop environment vs windows 10 home. Both had all unneeded tasks closed.
now would linux or windows 10 be more secure while hosting?
But again, these both had desktop environments. And I do know that the windows desktop is more resource heavy than gnome. But the windows version only let three of us play minecraft comfortably, while the Linux let us join six different devices and didn’t struggle.
I cannot answer that. I have only used my LAN :)
@frank steeple
Would you know about this?
Linux, hands down
There. You heard him. (hes techie :))
I'm also sysadmin
Sysadmin for who?
Man you have a great administrator
Also
Emy
You sent me friend request
Now I’m going to dm you
And there’s Nothing you can do about it

@frank steeple what is an A100 80gb?
A GPU
Is it for a server? Or just a freakin overpowered desktop
Server or workstations
It doesn't have a video output
It also just has a passive block for cooling lol
Not personally, it's just in a system that I worked with
It is
In general
Cause I know a guy who works for Air Force who had access to an a100 gpu
This one in particular not gonna say
No
Oh man I’d like to see a cinebench test from one of those. LTT once used a 64 core epyc and it looked like a Timelapse
Also
Combine the a100 with the 128 core epyc. That would be epic.
Unfortunately it was a headless Linux server
That particular server also only had v100's
Ah so no monitor
Oh well it’s still a beast of a server
Does anyone know if it’s possible to disable any mouse debounce settings in Linux? I am wondering because if I get a glorious model o and want it to double click in Linux, I won’t have the glorious software to adjust the debounce time
i dont evn kniw what a debounce is 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎
It’s when you click your mouse and it registers two clicks. Usually it’s a bad thing, but in minecraft 1.8 pvp it’s useful
Well, that’s what double clicking is. You get it by lowering your debounce time as low as you can
How’d you put so many emojis and not get kicked
bcuz im cool
✨
As long as I’m allowed to dodge???????
no cringe bad no dodging
No cringe bad no chair whacking
I’m going to Chicago this weekend and you can’t find me anymore. You can’t whack me with chair

I think admins loosened the "duplicate text" filter
Looks like it's five duplicates allowed now
Reason: Duplicated text
Nope

hi im in class hiding in the cabinet
Hwat
the cabinet im inside it
no im allowed to be on discord regardless we arent doing anything
not hiding but no ones found me
Strange
Also I think I might need to make a hot key stroke to open gimp too
It’s epic
I made a picture of my friend
the gimp button,,,,,,,
Yes!!!
Okie I made the gimp Button
THIS IS THE POWER OF THE GIMP BUTTON
(had to blur his face because yea)
Backstory for any sad/confused animal people: way back in June our fams went to the zoo.
stepping on a seal?
rude
No read the thing
the Point is not stepping on the seal, the point is that gimp is Wonderful
omg hand reveal
Omg I don’t care
Voice too
If you wanna see my face go to My YouTube channel and Click on Videos
No I don’t. Any suggestions as to what it should say?
As for this, I personally am the rickroll button ;)
If I install another desktop environment, such as gnome, will it install a bunch of its apps that go with it? Like the file explorer, clocks, calculator, software store etc
or may b im just unattentive
what de
Will stuff like Dolphin (Kde file looker atter) work in say, gnome
Yes
Or any of Kde stuff
i use thunar in every de
Whats thunar
xfces file manager
Is it really good?
Hmm
Does it let you like look at google drive
Or iCloud storage
And does it have tabs you can open in it
iCloud is a stretch. There’s not a super easy way to integrate it, but I kinda wish
Ooh
Nice
Cause I’ve got to say, tabs are so helpful
Same
Why do you think I’m using Linux
Lol
Hahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahaba
I ditched windows cmon
I pity people who think they need to buy chromebooks
Because they’re used to chrome os
And it’s all backed up
Oh. Yeah. I remember now.
You said networks were dumb and poopy :((((
i just have like 4tb of random drives laying arnd
And I said you were too If you thought that
so true
Nice xD
Is there an organization to them or nah, just file dump
mild organization
I have one that makes my pc not boot unless its the only drive plugfed in so its just laying in a drawer
theres nothing on it
like there are folders but the misc folder is the largestt
That’s annoying
I have a couple terabytes of storage total
But it’s in a folder, so it’s fearfully wonderfully organized
all my stroage is like
assorted laptop drives and my main one which is a 1tb ssd which i managed to get enough for
…
Very similar
I have a 1tb m.2 with Linux on it, and a 500gb mx500 with windows on it (both internal). Then I have a 120 gb ssd which I might try putting macOS on with rawr the actual techie, and then I 1tb wd blue hdd, a 320 gb hdd, a 480 gb hdd, and a 900-something gb hdd (the last 3 are salvaged from laptops).
And I also have two more hard drives but they’re superrrrrr Slow so I don’t trust them
The Junk
Mhm!!!!!
Yuh
Wait why does your pfp icon say you’re inactive when your sending messages
That’s weird
How
Uhh i was already somehow set to idle
Ohhh I see

It’s like “are you dating?” Nah we’re just platonic friends *proceeds to bash chair over head
So wait. Does my profile show a green dot, or the mobile phone symbol?

I am sleep deprived because of gimp.
And Linux in general
So much to learn still
have you discovered the filters menu
On discord? Or Linux
gimp
t He filters menu is v fun
I will
Tomorrow though
The scissors tool for cutting stuff out/selecting is handy, but for most stuff putting my mouse on a very low sens and zooming in a lot made it very easy to trace the outline precisely
(With the free selection tool)
i use free select like a lot more than most thigns
scissors can sometimes be wacky

Which vnc client should I use for my Ubuntu studio machine?
Also, is it safe to somehow use it on a different network, and from my iPad? I used to do it with Remote Desktop
If I can get it set up by tomorrow afternoon that would be great :) I’m going out of town and can’t live without gimp anymore
(I know gimp won’t be super smooth, that’s fine)
@frank steeple I didn’t ping you before because you were offline :) got suggestions for this?
Dunno, I usually use cli for remote connections
Do you know anyone here that does vnc?
If there’s a program I really want to use that’s on one of my machines and I called install it somewhere else, I use an SSH tunnel.
Can you see a gui/desktop when you use an ssh tunnel?
Ooh
So what’s the opinion of anydesk for remote access to my computer? Is it safe? Hopefully not Hackable?
It just seems a lot quicker to set up atm
Everything on the internet is hackable, it's only a matter of effort to do so vs potential payoff
Technically even things off the internet are hackable in the strictest definition
You can just install it back
rip
Have you considered TeamViewer?
I haven’t heard of it outside of Jim browning and scambaiter on YouTube xD so I guess I have a pretty low opinion of it. Is team viewer good?
It was easy enough to set up and has always worked well enough when I've used it in the past. It's free for personal use and will run on both OS's you've mentioned.
Oh, I'm assuming that you will be using the iPad remotely and not a Windows or Linux laptop/desktop/device.
If you have access to a Windows machine and just want to use GIMP, I'd suggest checking out https://portableapps.com/
Yes. I kinda of want to use my iPad with me because it’s portable, and leave desktop at home
I won't be offended if you wait for "official Techie approval" of TeamViewer. It's been a couple of years since I used it regularly.
That’s actually p cool. I’ll have to try that out. Now I could just bring my program to my friends house instead of complain
I was really interested in guyinblueshirt ssh tunnel thing, but I don’t know if it will work on an iPad
Yeah, just install the apps you want to a thumb drive, or to a drive in an external enclosure. USB3 makes PortableApps perform really well, but USB2 is usually adequate.
Since we're in the Linux channel... one other cool thing about PortableApps is that occasionally, apps set up for portable use will work on Linux using WINE, whereas the non-portable version won't.
Whoaa I just had an idea… I bet I could use portable apps to take a Linux vm wherever I go
That would be super cool
I think you're right about that... seems like I've done something similar.
Are there any specific ones, or just in general
Or... if we're assuming you have access to a desktop machine... just boot from a USB device and skip the VM complications.
I can't recall any specific apps that ran using WINE where the regular ones wouldn't. It's been quite a while since I tinkered with that.
True, but if it’s a friends computer and they want to have their stuff simultaneously, that would be a good option. Vm on stick drive wouldn’t be the fastest, but it’d get the job done in a pinch
Right, if they need simultaneous access to the machine, Linux in a VM would work. And if it's USB3, it should be pretty usable.
"SHOULD" meaning, I'm guessing since I've not done that in a while.
Or... since there always multiple options when discussing multiple OS's, heh heh.... if all else fails, you could just have the friend install GIMP on their machine.
Well, the using gimp part was from my iPad. Taking files around was for the portable apps lol
I use teamviewer a lot for remote connections to friend's computers because it's easy for them to just install and give me the password.
Hm okay good to know
Gimp runs fine on windows 8
@true void
(I have a laptop with with windows 8)
(I am having trouble putting Ubuntu on it)
I disabled secure boot though. I don’t know what the issue is
Rawr was doing it?
Lol
He changed his name to Dallas. I totally forgot
I used to use it on windows 8 whn I used windows 8 as my main os
i need someone to follow me arnd and say things i cant do it anymore
Hey, does anyone know of any alternatives to "wmgui" for an Ubuntu 20.04 based distro? I am trying to setup some Wii controllers to be recognized and used properly by the dolphin emulator for my father but I found out that wmgui likely doesn't work anymore in the current LTS Ubuntu based distros due to a move to only Python 3.
At the very least, it isn't available from the current repositories that are available to us in Zorin OS.
I don’t understand. If it needs python3, why not install Python3..?
Sounds more like it needs non python 3
You can theoretically install python 2.7 but you really really shouldn't
A lot of programs still require python2.7 though.
I mean, look at emerge on gentoo.
Last I checked, it used Python2.7
Haha gentoo
That's a huge problem if it does
2.7 is completely eol, it's not even receiving security updates anymore
It appears gentoo upgraded portage to drop support for 2.7 somewhat recently.
Last September apparently.
9 months after EOL
I have python 2.7 installed on my windows machine because of a python library I wanted to use. But then they updated it for 3 and I was happy
@frank steeple @rotund dirge Then what should I do? The program is old but the only one in existence I can find any information on and is the missing piece of a puzzle to allow the controllers to work in Dolphin.
Practically speaking, I don't know of any good options I have
There was one possible alternative mentioned that is meant for Arch but it was only briefly mentioned by someone else trying to solve the same issue but they obviously couldn't get it running in an Ubuntu based distro
I mean, like Bob said, you could install Python2.7.
I mean what was the arch alternative?
let me try to find the forum again and I will post if I am able. Someone was trying to solve this problem in April but no answers were found and that is where I heard of it from.
I did just find out the package is available in 20.10 but not specifically in 20.04 which Zorin OS is based on.
@rotund dirge I believe it is called XWiimote.
I believe it is usually in an AUR package.
Man. Felt that
I mean, AUR packages are just instructions on how to install and what to download, right?
It probably has you compile something.
Pretty much. Some are binaries, some need compiling
Though tbh most linux package managers are like that
This is me/possibly all Linux users.
When a windows user comes up and starts talking down on me.
The song from live action Aladdin starts going through my head before I laugh at them.
I WONT BE SILENT YOU CANT KEEP ME QUIET WONT TREMBLE WHEN YOU TRY IT ALL I KNOW IS I WONT GOOO SPEECHLESS… SPEECHLESSSSSSSSSSSS
lol
(My choir is singing that one)

This is part 1 in a series where Linus and Luke migrate their home workstation to Linux. In this episode, each decides which Distro they'll use, and then tries to run a game on it.
...
I found this super interesting to watch and I think a lot of people would too.
Some of the issues that came up were interesting as well in some ways.
lol
This irritates me lol.
@rotund dirge What part?
how did linus manage to bork pop
Pop's .iso file is borked from download
If you don't update it immediately and try to install Steam, it deletes the GUIs and DE
lol
Is that what it was?
during that period of time they rushed out updates to fix it but some people stumbled into the bug and it is basically irreversible without fresh install

Yep
Still though.
The steps he took to do that whole thing.
You’d think he’d be like “wait, why am I doing all of this for steam?”
I will be completely fair, he didn't fully read the last sentence before typing what it told him to to proceed
He didn’t read a lot of what it said
@rotund dirge Keep in mind that he believes that Linux is unnecessarily complicated from the getgo so he didn't question it
I didn’t know Linus was so closed minded.
Which is a problem of perception for a lot of people I have noticed
I don't think it is closed minded as much as he has bad preconceptions
I mean, people think it’s complicated because they’re sheep.
They see decisions on what to get as “unnecessarily complicated.”
I have met people in real life when talking about us (me and my dad) trying Linux and they legit ask me why I would want to only be able to use a terminal as they believe that only a terminal exists in Linux distros
Oh, got to pick between 2 DEs? It’s unnecessarily complicated.
The funny thing is, you don’t need to use the terminal in something like PopOS.
There’s the Pop Store for that reason.
View it through the lens of him trying to see what mainstream people might think when trying Linux for the first time and experiencing it (He finds himself to be partially representative but more technically able).
During one of the recent WAN shows, he does directly state he believes that, for non gaming use, Linux distros are comparable and in some ways better than Windows so his opinion changes the longer he uses it and records new parts.
Yep, which is why I find the first parts to be so important to show what a regular PC power user might run into while trying out distros and the feedback is very useful and insightful imo.
As more people use Linux, it’ll give developers a reason to make a proton compatible version.
Or native version.
With that said, I checked proton db and over 80% of games were compatible the last time I checked and both BattleEye and Easy Anti-cheat announced they were providing support for Linux when developers opt-in now after the Steam Deck announcement.
I personally haven't found a game yet of mine that doesn't work but Dead By Daylight and that will work soon because of that announcement if they literally flip a switch (which they would have every reason to do so).
Honestly the big issue nowadays are F2P games and some AAA titles.
Like Riot Games will probably never support proton.
Or make a Linux port.
Look at the colors of this list of top 100 games. There is only a handful at most that are red. That is insanely good compared to even 6 months ago.
Green is native?
Silver games and better I consider to be playable for the most part as I have been able to get roughly 75% of those to run flawlessly in the living room.
Yeah
I will post how the ratings work. One sec.
Yep.
Also, this website shows games and their upcoming support in their anticheats for Steam Deck + other Linux platforms:
Honestly, all of this has me excited where I am moving to dual booting Win11 and either Feren OS or Zorin OS (likely Feren OS to be able to use KDE plasma desktop environment customization immediately) as I will be able to move most of my games over to the Linux side which will be my main OS.
Sadly, I will be forced to keep Windows for some very specific things I do like using Windows Mixed Reality VR.
My parents are the same xD
Thankfully, as adoption increases, people can clear up those misconceptions :)
Hopefully

I used to use snake emoji for like sly and lurking, but I used it in a groupchat and people were like saying it was s**ual and not appropriate but funny, and then they started being flirty and I felt horrible
I don’t know another word instead of controversial

Idk
Snek shouldn't mean peen, unless you're a child
looks fine to me
tbh now that im looking at it more, its looks a little like among us
and i feel horrible for saying that
Okay I literally have no clue. And yea, I’m technically a child although this happened a couple years ago when I still had android phone (snake looked different)
you wouldn’t even write out the word snake lol. So maybe it does have a little bit of nagging restraint in peoples minds

Hey, I am very unfamiliar with this kind of thing so I thought I should ask it here to people with way more experience and knowledge than me as I haven't permanently switched to any Linux distro yet:
Can you install the graphical package manager store from one distro into another distro? As an example, if I wanted the Pop Shop in a non-Pop_Os distro?
When it comes to package management, file management, how distros work under the hood, etc. I am so completely ignorant of how most of it works that I am trying to learn the basics through examples that interest me.
You could but you might get weird results. Most packages in the pop shop are flatpacks instead of debs, and you can technically use both on the same system with some work.
I see.
You'd also need to mess with repositories which can get... messy.
I am asking because I was wondering if I should just settle for Pop_Os as it seems to have the best store for my purposes even if I don't like the DE and such it comes with to start.
It's a lot easier to just install a new DE
Ah okay
I am tempted to go to Feren Os and just accept I won't like the store as much as I really like their customization of Plasma.
Why not just install a different DE?
Mainly due to me worrying about breaking stuff and not being able to figure out how to customize Plasma to my liking
You can take the packages for that version of plasma and install it on pop
Oh, how would I go about doing that?
They’re usually just themes.
(sorry if it seems like I am playing 20 questions as I don't want to break an install of Pop Os inside of KDE Plasma again)
There's a half dozen ways to get the packages, just like everything on Linux it comes down to how you prefer to download
The way to avoid breaking a Linux OS is to use the built in backup mechanism to make a system image you can restore with a single command
What is a really good, quick way? I always appreciate choice but sometimes there are so many options I can't figure out which one is best.
Also, does pop come with a backup software? I might have missed it last time.
You can either temporarily add the repositories feren uses and install from those, then delete them, or you can just navigate in the browser and manually download them and the dependencies.
How would I find which repositories to add specifically for the DE?
Is there a resource for that online I could look at for future reference if something like that comes up again?
You can just do a quick google search for "(Insert OS) Repositories" and one of the first few results will tell you what they are
Changing the repositories is easy if you use a GUI like synaptic package manager
It should warn you too when you're about to do something potentially damaging that way
Okay
I will try that in a VM to see if I can make an install I am happy with that way
Btw, thank you so much for your help!
Wait a second, actually, don't I have to know what to tell it to install when in that repository? Like, what would I type after "sudo apt install" in the terminal to get the right package?
That's why it's easier to use a GUI like synaptic, you can search for what you want and it will find the exact names and select it for you, as well as dependencies
As far as backup, it's been a while since I used Pop so I guess it doesn't come with a backup but I recommend Timeshift
So, I just need to add and use Synaptic package manager inside of it (the VM to test) then?
VM is a great way to test that, yes
Alright, I will try it and send some screenshots of the result
Thank you so much!
The package is just named "synaptic" so you can sudo apt-get install synaptic timeshift so then it installs both at once to save a step
I didn't realize you could install multiple packages in one line
I really need to familiarize myself with the syntax for the terminal
Yeah, you can even do multiple commands on one line and filter results. Terminal is really powerful.
So you can do sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade on one line
I know "sudo" is telling it to run the command as a temp super user and "apt" calls your package manager indirectly (or you can use "apt-get" to use it directly)
but I need to learn the rest of the syntax and exact meanings of them
Also lspci | grep wifi will list any wireless devices, using ' | ' as a pipe and grep as a filtering program
Something I highly appreciate is that the terminal works with commands similar to a basic programming language inside of the OS
I don't remember a ton from my programming courses but "&&" is a good example of something I used to see a lot in use
Any time you want to learn more about a command, just man 8 "command" and you'll get a full manual and description of syntax and such
Oooh, that one I will be using a lot at first then as I want to learn what I can as I decided to commit to a switch by Christmas
Definitely, that one has saved my butt multiple times
I say so
After all, they say: "The first step to solving a problem is to first understand the said problem"
Okay, I have a github page with repositories and I don't exactly know where to go from here:
I can definitely tell there will be a learning curve to all of this as I have only ever used Windows XP, Windows 7, and Vista as a kid before now using Windows 10. I am struggling with specific things but I am very much enjoying the learning curve to doing things in different ways.
Once you have synaptic installed you can view and change repos in the settings
Run a system image in timeshift first
To add a repo, do I add it based on its URL?
I am not familiar with how to do that part. I saw where to add it in settings.
Sorry for not clarifying.
Basically yes, you just copy the info and paste it into that screen. The address is the web address.
Architecture you're probably using amd64 (even on intel)
Oh okay. That makes this much easier. Is there a specific repository I need or just the link for all repositories?
Each one should be a separate entry. If you have one already like the base debian one, you can skip it.
You can also skip source (or src) ones
Once you've done all that, restart it and run another image on timeshift for good measure
Okay, I added the repositories link for Feren using the link I posted above.
Taking a snapshot now
Once you've done that, you can open synaptic and search for "plasma" in package names. Usually any unique versions will be noted, like plasma-feren or something. Not always, but often.
Hmm
There are so many packages
I found these two but they don't look any different than I would expect from regular Plasma:
More or less than 50 results? You can filter it down more if more
looks to be way more than 50
There are even Kubuntu versions of KDE showing up
as well as tons of themes and such
Try search for feren plasma in package names and descriptions
It's probably the standard plasma with a theme
Lol
I am very glad I am temporarily experimenting with this in Windows VM so I can snip, lol
Hang on I'll hop over to my desktop and find the packages
Okay, thank you! Seriously!
Plasma-desktop is the first, looking for the custom theme name now
Oh nice and simple, feren-os-theme
Don’t you love it when Linux makes it simple?
