Are you asking which one is it? It's one of these https://www.ebay.com/itm/123734881420

Yeahhh, cause dvi has a wide pin
Yeah, luckily only one of the pins on mine was broken when I got it so I was able to install OS over one working DVI link
(the fact you can buy two of these things for $20 even during the shortage speaks volumes)
At first I thought you meant cables/splitters/connectors
Then I clicked on eBay listing xD
But, with those cards hardware acceleration is kinda a joke
Yeah I have my plex set to 100% cpu processing, no gpu acceleration, or else it lags so hard I have to measure it in frames per minute
It splits into this
2 DVI ports
So you can theoretically support 4 monitors from one port
That's also why the pin density is so high, it has to be able to support 4 monitors lol
How big is your library? Just curious
I lost track around 6TB, somewhere between that and 8TB is my guess
Movies and music mostly, and yes I own originals
Do you do, uh, things like “arr!” To get your stuff? Or all legit
No 100% legit, no jolly rogers flying in my house
I rip my own blu rays, dvds, etc
Good!
I even own original cartridges for all the games I emulate like pokemon and stuff. The batteries in those are long dead, no more saves possible.
As a “clean” person, (which I aspire to be) have you heard of a site called bandcamp? I am trying to find a place for good quality flacs
I'm not the one to ask about FLAC audio
wow... no comment. LMAO
Alright. But have you ever purchased music online?
Any kind?
I'm trying to come up with "the Linux connection" to what @undone lichen posted... and failing. LOL
I can’t figure it out either…. I think he wanted to take part but didn’t know what to say
So he ate, uh, Cat.
Well.... maybe? But... I'm a dirty ol' man so my brain went a direction that is DEFINITELY not "tech-related." LOL
But yeah... I've never seen that "Double DVI" connector before.
Yeah same. But I’m probably younger than you ancient dirty old man
How old are you anyways
I assumed that. Nobody near my age uses as good grammar as you
LOL
Idk how old Linux is
Just linux or Unix?
Actually... I'm not 100% sure either.... googling now.....
DAMMIT! I'm older than Unix. 😢
Unix celebrated its 50th anniversary 6 months ago lol
Your prayers won't help you now. [muah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaaa]
U old
Not as old as Unix at least
how old are u btw
ya'll trying to age shame me now, eh? 😝
haha how are ur joints holding up
Let's just say Linus Torvalds was working on Linux at the time I was born
also im confused
LOL... actually, now that I think about it... my joints are all pretty damn good.
the instructions dont say anything about the amount of partitions you need
the guy in the video said 3
hmm
Partitioning is kinda like one of the dark arts.
what's the ideal amount and why would I want more?
Most people will go with 3, boot/efi, swap, and OS
Oh I see
More can be good for people that like to tinker and occasionally break things like me.
I can keep my user data in a separate partition from the system when I need to reinstall.
More like slices of the pie
Yeah
They're physically in the same place but cut into pieces
I keep all data on one partition. I may change when I reinstall for 22.04
or maybe "physically on the same drive"?
fair
yeah I understand that much haha
what I meant was if you somehow break a partition? You'd have another one just in case?
Well, breaking one partition could still make the system unusable depending on which one
Yeah
They don’t have the same data on them usually
Well you'd want to keep your boot partition safe right?
That's why it's typically separated
And Windows requires it to be separate, to help combat rootkit viruses
The generic installation guide is meant for generic installations. Partitioning is very dependent on your specific situation and needs.
Yep. You don't need to know how it all works to get it running. It's good to know but there's plenty of info for the curious like you.
Yeah but the beginners guide people just said follow all the instructions detailed in the installation guide and then work your way up from there

fair enough
I'm just kinda hesitant to ask since the arch community is known for not spoon feeding you stuff
And that's decent advice because you can always re-partition later as your needs (and drives) change.
yeah I was about to ask about that haha
I like communities that spoon feed knowledge. Even if I think I already know, just having someone confirm that I’m right or wrong is so helpful
I'm not an expert in this area... or any other for that matter... but.... the most accurate answer for "how should I partition my drives?" is.... "It depends." :-D
Arch really does like to just toss you into piranha infested waters and see if you float
And NOT get all annoyed when you ask one question (LinuxServer discord) heh
That's why the running joke answer for "which distro should I start with?" is "Arch
"
Oh it's a joke?
I uSe ArCh BtW
Wait.... is the answer "Arch.".... or... "Arch, BTW"?
Yes. Yes definitely.
Bruh
Don't get me wrong, it's a great OS for learning the ins and outs of Linux
But it's very much tossing you into the deep end
I mean that's how I feel most of the time anyways 🙃
You've gotten this far though, many give up before this point

I've been using Linux since the late 90's... and still feel like a newb on a regualr basis. LOL
reading the instructions for this installation is like reading a different language
I have to consult a wiki for every word I come across
I did too
But not anymore
GTFO... LOL
I’m basically a wiki now
"What do you mean you don't know how to cross compile binaries for arm?!"
I was thinking about installing Arch onto my new PC after I build it
Is that a bad idea?
"It depends."
If you’re new, please don’t start with arch
I mean, you can, but it might scare you off
Maybe start with a VM, or dual boot
Dual boot for sure.
Noooo.... VM would be better than dual boot.
No VM is just safer than dual boot lol
sounds like it will take me a couple months of trial and error before I get a functional pc
I've been dual booting for a long time, 'cause I'm a masochist. LOL If the objective is to learn, then a VM is much better because you can delete the VM and start over and still have a functional system. If you screw up a dual boot system... you're dual screwed.

I humbly suggest that you get a functioning system first. Then if you want to learn more details about how Linux works, there are a variety of ways you can do that without risking your functioning system.
God forbid you mistype /dev/nvme4 as /dev/nvme5, or switch your if=and of= doing DD
Mmm fair points
LMAO.... yeah... that would be Baaaaaaad!
I have had multiple dual boot systems… for awhile…. And I do “dangerous “ things to the OSs. And I’ve only had to reinstall windows once when I resized my efi partition and broke it
Once you have a functional system it's really easy to set up a system snapshot, and regular backups to the snapshot, so if something goes wrong you can revert easily.
Why not use the gui……..
Right.... or you can use a "disposable" VM to do anything you want.
Because GUIs are for chumps
But guis are easy ://///
LOL... I wasn't gonna say that... but I thought it.
And most of the time can't do all the features I need
And they just work for the most part
But for getting a dual boot up and running perfectly, they do everything you need
GUI vs. CLI ??? is yet another "it depends" issue.
TUI is king over both
Don’t get my wrong, I love the command line. But for installing, give me gui
Yeah one of the reasons why I wanted linux was to run a bunch of VMs both for privacy and security reasons
isnt that a fancy way of saying cli
The TUI runs within a CLI at least but they are not the same
oh yeah
also a minimalist OS is smth I'm after since windows likes to install alot of bloatware for some reason
i read this already. i prefer cli
cli>gui>tui
dammit... I'm trying to enjoy an adult beverage and you're making me read techie stuff. ARGH!
A well written TUI will have access to the full CLI tools while having an easy enough to use interface, best of both worlds
Just look at the pictures you'll get the idea lol
READ IT
OR THIS CRAB WILL USE WEAPONS
You shuddup! A nerd with an adult beverage
yeah... what could go wrong?
What's the point of being drunk if you're not also going to be hilarious? 😆
So.... TUI is related to stuff like ncurses, which I've heard of.
They were yelling and crying while arguing how many flavors of sour patch kids there are.
Actual grown men and women, crying like 4 year olds with hurt feelings
LMAO... wow.... LOL
What are a few good useful tui apps you personally recommend?
so yeah... I'm nowhere near THAT drunk. LOL
It was pretty funny. And then they started talking about things that are banned here by the chat filter
(I was the caterer)
actually... my buzz is mostly gone thanks to the activity here. 😝 So now I need a refill.
Seems like "top" would be a TUI??
Yeah, or viewing logs, or something like nano or vim or my terminal Tetris game
Oh, and that article mentioned "terminal based web browsers"... which would be "lynx."
🙄
I should check that out
For no reason but pain.
Alright drunk old Linux user. I’ll be back later. Gnight
Heheh
those of u who've tried multiple android emulators on PC,
which one do u prefer ? (esp for gaming performance)
Just use gui
no gui for the thing i use linux for
What's that
android rom development
only gui i use is file explorer
even then only to test changes before commiting to git
There's probably a vscode extension for it
I understand why command line is very very good. And I use it a lot. But if a gui can do it faster, USE THE GUI
maybe but i mean cli is great
i see no reason to switch
I think generally cli would be faster, if you know how to use it enough
this might sound like a dumb question but how different does linux feel to windows in terms of the options of programs that are available?
I'm still kinda pondering as the absence of MSI afterburner, Rivatuna, the ability to choose your own desktop backgrounds, Nvidia support seem very drastic in change
Oh yeah and programs like Adobe and MS office also aren't available
There's usually alternatives to windows programs.
GreenWithEnvy instead of Afterburner for example. Office is handled by libreoffice; it can open docx.
There's a few specific programs that you have to make a few compromises on, such as Photoshop. There's plenty of alternatives available, of course, but you really have to search for one you like.
Changing backgrounds is handled by your desktop environment. It's usually under a settings app. Been a while since I used pure Arch.
I was thinking about installing Ubuntu onto my next PC. And ig I'm just feeling a bit of a culture shock imagining life without the windows programs I've familiarized myself with over the years.
As for Arch I've decided that I need a more controlled learning environment where I don't just destroy my entire boot partition or smth as that would cause me to fall behind on my work if I spend time fixing my OS as apposed to working
Smart. Sounds like a VM is good for you then.
As in running a VM on Ubuntu or windows?
Either. Both. Your choice.
The nice thing about a VM is you can run it on any system, since they're almost all cross platform for VM software.
The exception being the crappy one built into windows
I just remembered a random issue that I have had to deal with for a few years. My internet service is through Xfinity. Their web site does not function on Linux, either using Firefox or Chrome. So, since I already had a Win10 VM set up, I just used that for the few things I use the Xfinity site for. It's a PITA but it works.
How can a website not work on Linux?!
I’ve seen some government websites refuse to work on Linux.
Today for example.
What example
Cause that’s just weird
“All Linux users are hackers”
What is weird is that Xfinity.com seems to be working now. If I recall correctly, there was an error when I tried to login.
That's possible, but I couldn't login via Firefox or Chrome on Linux... but could use both when running on a Win10 VM.
I haven't tried to login using Linux in possibly 2 years. So maybe the web site issue got fixed long ago and I just wasn't sent the memo.
The movie/media section of the site still doesn't like current version of Firefox on Linux....
Please download the latest browser version.
Before upgrading to the latest browser version, ensure you're on a supported Operating System.
Supported Operating Systems
Windows 7+, iOS 11+, Android 7+
Mac OS X 10.14.4+ for Safari
Mac OS X 10.7+ for Chrome and Firefox
Do you have WideVine installed/enabled?
Yeah it’s required by google and a lot of stuff
A lot of older sites required IE
Ah
Also just general stupid design
Obviously
Speaking of Linux. My openmediavault server is set up. And I have a docker container running jellyfin. I very much like it
Especially for music
It’s mapped to my domain name too
And I have ssl certs 😎
I have a bunch of things in docker rn, was experimenting to see how it would be in k8s
Docker is very cool
Singularity is cooler 😎
Is that a software or only running one thing at a time
Build one
Pcpp??
Get a bunch of cheap NUC type computers and a gigabit switch
Like a cluster of computers?
I know people use raspberry pis sometimes
Yup, that's all a supercomputer is at the end of the day. There's only so fast that a single core can go, and there are only so many cores that you can get in a single system. What a supercomputer does is take a bunch of systems and adds some software packages that lets you do a sort of multithreading over ethernet
When I get to college, I know there’s a whole class dedicated to that topic
(In my major)
Do you know if the computers have to be identical? Because I have many laptops….
A Beowulf cluster is a computer cluster of what are normally identical, commodity-grade computers networked into a small local area network with libraries and programs installed which allow processing to be shared among them. The result is a high-performance parallel computing cluster from inexpensive personal computer hardware.
The name Beowulf...
Would importing docker containers into singularity be easier than trying to convert it to a k8s manifest
They don't have to be, but it makes things a bit easier to set up
You can basically convert it directly
Would you do it like install operating system>install way to manage multiple machines, or install cluster software>install some sort of Linux?
Linux and then the clustering software on top of it
Ill have to try than
Does it run on Ubuntu server? Or does it need a massive datacenter Linux
Because this actually might be possible
Can do pretty much any distro
You can get up to 16 free rhel systems for personal use btw
If I make money does it count as personal?
I'd have to check, I think it'd be fine
Says you can use it for a production environment
The only things they explicitly say that you can't do is use it on more than 16 systems or resell the binaries
Nice! Yes that does look like I could even make money.
I just hope docker runs on rhel if I ever tried that
Who am I kidding I’m sure it does
lol
It does, that's what docker is for
😑
One of these days I need to read a bit about Docker so I can hopefully stop thinking about pants when I see the word "Docker."
This seems like a good place to start....
https://www.docker.com/resources/what-container/
I made a very nice bash script.
oh yeah? whut it do?
There is a cool thing called spot-dl (ahoy matey) that uses Spotify metadata and YouTubeDL to get music. I don’t like to use it a lot, I prefer buying music. But when I do, I now use the script to add my format and file organization arguments.
So I just run the script from anywhere and paste the link and it puts it in the right folder in the right format
Aaahh... interesting. Good job!
The only scripts I recall cobbling together were for conversion of media files. E.g., FLV to MP4, etc. using ffmpeg. Seems like I had one for individual files and one for everything in the folder. I also had one for pitch-shifting folders full of files, usually up or down 1 half step. They're nothing special as far as scripts go, but were very useful at the time.
Pitch shifting? Like musically speaking?
Correct.
Noice
Reason: Duplicated text
Mee6 is on drugs. LOL
I can repost it for you lol
For example.....
This shifts the pitch of every MP3 in a directory to 1/2 step down. I'm 100% sure it could be better, but it worked fine for creating files to listen to in the key that the band would be playing them.
`
Dump audio from .MP3 to .WAV
echo ""
echo "[DUMPING AUDIO via ffmpeg]";
echo ""
for i in *.mp3;
#do ffmpeg -i "$i" -acodec pcm_s16le -ac 2 -ab 128 -vn -y "${i%flv}wav";
do lame --decode "$i" "${i%mp3}wav"
done
Pitch-shift WAV down 1/2 step
echo ""
echo "[SHIFTING PITCH via sox]"
echo ""
for i in *.wav;
do sox "$i" "${i%.wav}-HSD.wav" pitch -q -100;
done`
`# Encode WAV to MP3 @ 192:
echo ""
echo "[ENCODING WAV to MP3 via lame"
echo ""
for i in *-HSD.wav;
do lame -h -b 192 "$i" "${i%wav}mp3";
done
echo ""
echo "[DELETING WAV FILES]"
echo ""
rm -v *.wav`
And I'm guessing it was a reply to @strong plover
Thanks.... I was making a pastebin to avoid Mee6. heh heh
Pastebin
Pastebin.com is the number one paste tool since 2002. Pastebin is a website where you can store text online for a set period of time.
Too many echoes I think lol
Yo that’s a cool one
Is it possible to override a color from a GTK theme?
The link color in Adapta-Nokto is way too dark to read :/
hmm... If this allowed me to change the link color, it would be perfect:
Hmm interesting
I think I got it working! The solution was to switch from the Qt theme gtk2 to qt5ct and then setting the Kvantum Adapta theme from the app.
Is there a compatibility difference when running Linux on Radeon integrated graphics vs intel integrated graphics?
Not really
Good.
II have come into possession of a nice laptop with a ryzen 5 5500U and I wanted to make sure it would work nicely with Linux
Although i guess i was thinking backwards, it’s AMD that generally has very good Linux support
eyyy congrats
👏
I just bought a "AMD Advantage" laptop just so I could avoid Nvidia.
The Nvidia experience on my desktop has been very very subpar. One of my monitors still rarely turns on due to the Nvidia drivers.
my ventoy is full :(
only 32gb....
I need a 128 gb ventoy to be happy
because I kind of want to keep the older versions of distros on there. a history thing
although, I could copy them to my server until I want them. then I could download more isos
How can I get Linux for my browser
Clarify please?
How
What did you mean by “for my browser”? I am a little confused
@fiery dirge are you talking about like this?
I’ve never used that, and it seems a little dumb, but if it works, good for you
Ok
Feel like I should post this in the Linux chat too
Yessir
Anyone hear of/use Crossover?
Ye ive messed around with it in the past
Ever tried MS office in it?
Ok
you know ur getting no levels from this right?
you dont get any exp from a message in every channel
u just irritate people by saying useless unecessary stuff in every channel
thats all u get from what ur doing
Oh.
Yeh exp is time based not channel based
Huh, I wonder why I'm not higher level then. I'm in here everyday lol
Takes a while to rank up and it's timer based like you get a random number of xp between x and y each time you talk except a cool down period of 1-3 minutes or something
Ah ok.
Is there a chart that shows what tier you get at what level?
Oh, I had that whole sections minimized. Didn't realize that was there ha.
Lol
Lol
someone posted this, in case anyone got any ideas 🙏
(OS is Ubuntu)
Do you know anything about dead battery and wifi adapters?
Idk if its OS specific but an old laptop battery is kinda dead (still works) but the os isnt able to find the wifi adapter suddenly
I did the wlan0 up and down thingies. Didnt work
My lshw -C network output shows network disabled
And The GUI button to switch on wifi in settings simply doesn’t work.
Bad batteries can absolutely cause all kinds of weird issues because of the incorrect voltage supply. More sensitive components like the WiFi adapter could be more affected.
I also have bad battery adapter in my MacBook
Air
Ground.
I acquired an old-ish (i5-6440HQ) Dell laptop and bought a cheap power supply for it that met the specs I found on the Dell site. I was having a weird issue where the touchpad would randomly become unresponsive for a few seconds. My solution was to use a wireless mouse and that worked fine.
I only had the problem when it was plugged in via the power supply. It turns out that the cheap power supply isn't sufficient in some way and that causes the issue with the touchpad. I'd never heard of this sort of thing happening before. Electricity is weird. [chuckle]
I have an old i3 laptop that when it’s plugged into a cheap power supply the display outputs flash, both built in screen and hdmi
That’s on windows and Linux
I have a new laptop that’s kn MacBook and linux
Is it a Mac or another one
block and move on
that dude "farms" exp by sending a useless random message in every chanel
On the subject of macs though, did you see that apple released Rosetta for Linux?
did u see that a dev confirmed that rosetta works on linux on a fairly modern arm cpu
theres no closed source magic about it that makes it not work on non mac devices
it does break tos, but so does hackintoshing and apple doesnt care too much about that one
Besides some fanciness with memory
It'll work, but memory access might be wonky
true
Does Rosetta/Linux mean we’ll be able to run x86 Linux programs on an arm Linux machine, or Apple programs on Linux?
It doesn't like your GPU
Thats what i got from google yeah
Start it in recovery mode and install the proprietary drivers
Yes. It did the same thing with my 2070.
Ok ubuntu is starting up fine apparantly its just mint that hates it
And elementaryos
Yep it's a distro specific issue
I know Pop works fine because it has the nvidia driver out of the box
I wanna go elementary os tbh
I really like the ui
apt-get install nvidia-driver
Thats the one yeah?
That should grab the meta-package that has the latest yeah
Elementary os does another wierd thing tho it might be ventoy being wierd, the advanced options button does nothing, and if i boot normally it doesnt get past bios splash
Weird indeed.
Thanks nvidia for being so cooperative with the Linux community!
Almost makes you want to get AMD lol
I have an amd card as my main, just use a damn t600 as secondary which is screwing stuff up
Pull the t600, install, remove the nouveau driver, then you can put the t600 back and install nvidia driver
I had to do the same thing with my 2070 lol. Dusted off my old HD 5770 to fix it.
Does th card need to be in to install the driver or can i just install?
No telling if elementary os will even boot with it in
To install the nvidia driver? Yeah it'll require the card in or it will fail
Once you remove nouveau you remove the problem though
ahh
Git gud
damn falcie got my back sheeeeeee
@fallow belfry now linux mint is doing exactly this with t600 pulled out
Im just installing popos
I forgot how much i hate popos
Wasted way too many hours trying to get a build environment set up
But nothing ever works on popos for me
Garbage distro
x86 on arm
Pop OS installer is dumb too. Dual booting is a nightmare.
Can we all agree that kubuntu/Ubuntu studio/Kde has one of the nicest installers?
The disk partition view is sooo clean, and it’s very easy and straightforward. Also, it gives THREE options unlike popos for the disks. Kubuntu has erase and install, install alongside, and advanced.
PopOS is just, complete wipe and reinstall, or advanced. And you have to have a huge efi partition for popOS. I think it’s 500mb.
If you’re dual booting, the windows default is 100. (Usually plenty)
thx for coming to my tedtalk
I don't think pop needs 500mb so much as that's the default. You should be able to do less through manual partitioning.
Nope. It does not work. I tried many times.
I only tried on one laptop, but still
We restarted the installation (dual boot setup) and ended up having to make two efi partitions. It was a mess.
I like just being able to click, “install” after selecting the unallocated space I made in windows. (For a dual boot). Manually partitioning things is kind of silly
Well, it is when you just need the defaults.
What did the popos do to you?

That's subjective and very much dependent upon ones needs.
No, it's always faster
I didn't say anything about "faster."
Faster is best
Not always heh
If it’s at the cost of power efficiency, than no. But desktop Linux makes my laptop battery last more than 8 hours, and windows 11 (debloated, and intentionally closing unused programs) lasts approximately the advertised 5.5 hours
So Linux is faster, and better for power efficiency :)
Oh, and the fans don’t need to run when I use Linux. They’re almost always on in windows
One more thing. The Linux side of this dual boot is constantly running a windows 10 vm in the background (very much optimized, but still). And the battery life is hours better
Uve missed the joke lad
Faster is best therefore linux is best
"Ease of use" and "familiarity" are more important than "faster" to a lot of people. What's "best for you" isn't necessarily the "best for everyone."
Ofc depends on your uses, for networking and server I use linux, for work I use mac, for gaming I use windows
Well rounded guy
I agree, but for people that only use a computer skin deep, it doesn’t make a difference. My mom was a windows user. I switched her over to kubuntu. She doesn’t really care
Ye I’ve decided I’ll never get an os that can do everything for me, so i use all of them
I am considering running a macOS vm on my Linux laptop. (For immessage). Rawr and I tried so hard to get Mac on my other laptop, but it wasn’t going great. A vm seems more stable
Or predictable I guess
Dead channel 💀
Thanks, we do try. Now ssssssshhhhhhh.... don't disturb the dead channel.
Shh. Don’t wake us. You might get bowled over by when we wake up
Precisely this.
cat /dev/urandom | tr -cd 'a-z '
Just let it run for a bit, it'll eventually say everything that needs to be said
What does it do?
I know about dev urandom
Need to google the other stuff
Sounds like it helps scramble the stuff up? Idk
Filters out everything but letters and characters
Ohhh I see
I am the Linux server man. And I like active Linux chats :)
Ugh... .KDE Plasma on Fedora 36... why is my cursor showing up correctly when over application windows or the task bar, but changing to the default cursor when it's over the desktop?
No. I've changed from "Desktop" to "Folder View" and back, logging out each time. No change.
For me, it takes two complete reboots of my computer to fix it.
Whenever I change my cursor.
If that doesn’t work, I have read about somewhere where you edit a config files for your default cursor etc
I've tried editing the um... I think it was the "index.theme" file for the default cursor and changing the "inherits" line.
Yeah that was it.
My only suggestion would be 2 full reboots.
Because that is what worked in my experience
A random guess saves the day!
The cursors that I wanted to use were installed in:
/home/dude/.local/share/icons
so altering the index.theme file for /usr/share/icons/default was not going to work. From the above directory...
$ sudo mv 'Oxygen 01 Yellow' /usr/share/icons seems to be the magic. I'm not sure if altering the "Inherits" line in the default index.theme makes any difference but I set that to "Oxygen 01 Yellow" anyway.
Nice!
But it was a guess. 😁 And I'm still curious why all the cursors are in the "ICONS" directory.
that is kind of unexpected tbh. I guess cursors might come with icons in a theme sometimes
Yeah it's designed around gamers and other normal casual computer users. It also helps to include the Nvidia driver.
Pop is okay for what it does, the nvidia drivers is probably best thing tho
My hate for pop is infinite
I might have to try it.
Sucks to be you ig
Its just never worked well for me
I think you mean the popos
I concur
Lol
I am a python programming Genius. (I used streamlit because im big dummy)

Someone notices….
I need to update my Fedora 35 system to Fedora 36. Updating would be simpler, but I have an issue I haven't been able to solve and I hope that reinstalling might fix it. (see below for description of the issue) Assuming I reinstall, the question is, "Is there an easy way to reinstall all the random packages I have installed now?"
There are a few applications that are installed from a .tar file rather than being part of the official package repository and they always have dependencies that need to be tracked down. So, I'd like to minimize that particular headache if possible. I could export a list of all installed packages, but I think that includes version numbers, which would surely change in the new OS version. Any thoughts on how to get all the random stuff reinstalled?
The existing issue mentioned above is that when I use System Settings to get new stuff, e.g., themes, colors, icons, cursors, etc., that gets an error message and fails. This is on a system that's not currently turned on so I'll get the error message later and add it here. I think I've also asked about it here in the past couple of months.
No, there's no easy way. Packages that you've compiled will have to be re-compiled to match the new kernel headers. Version numbers shouldn't change, though.
I suppose I could update, and if that fixes the "existing issue" I'm done. If the existing issue remains, I could export the list of installed packages, then re-install the OS, then install apps etc. from the list.
That’s what I would recommend. I will be doing a similar thing when I reinstall for 22.04 Ubuntu
But then again, I don’t know how fedora works
I'd prefer to figure out this stupid issue and just update. LOL Which reminds me that I haven't posted the error message......
Using KDE System Settings > any of the Appearance options (colors, Icons, cursors, wallpaper, etc.) > Get New [stuff].... gives this error:
Loading of providers from file: https://autoconfig.kde.org/ocs/providers.xml failed
I think it's some sort of authentication issue but I don't know how to track it down.
I don't recall seeing this possible solution before so maybe this will work...
https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/plasma-discover-loading-providers-failed.html
Nope, that's not it. I don't have any .knsrc files in /etc, though there are some in both /usr/share/config (these are all older) and /usr/share/knsrcfiles
Chasing the possible SSL issue....
I got these two errors when running Discover via the command line as root…
The server failed the authenticity check (odrs.gnome.org).
The issuer certificate of a locally looked up certificate could no be found.

mac: "sweet only have to wait a year to install the update"
mac: “aw man, my MacBook is already 6 months old, it won’t even be compatible with the update”
Do MacBooks have a software longevity problem? I know the iPhone gets lots of updates but I don't know anything about the MacBook.
MacBooks last a long time. But you did ask in the Linux channel.
Most professionals usually wait like a year or 2 to update their macs to a newer os after it is first released anyway due to software support and possible instability. But I don’t see them having huge issues with long term software support, older macs may not be able to install latest features but still get security updates

Is it possible to ssh or telnet into a router?
I'm trying to run a TURN server on my Linux box (for Matrix voip calls), but it doesn't like being behind a NAT. If I could run TURN on my router, it would solve that issue as the router is not behind a NAT (afaik).
some routers allow you to ssh youd have to check the manufacturer or settings it is often something not turned on by default
It's all in French and it's killing me.
I see they have a "remote access" toggle, but it's just to access the web UI by typing my public IP into a browser, so no luck.
Is it something that port forwarding can’t fix?
I have set up a website that uses html, css, js and php on a linuxserver that is hosted on azure. Now I can start the phpserver on localhost but it is not reachable outside and when I enter the publicip I get this error: [Fri Jul 1 23:20:14 2022] Failed to listen on 40.82.148.73:8000 (reason: Cannot assign requested address) Does anyone have an idea?
You’re not hosting the website on default port 80 or 420?
Im not sure how azure does things but just check that you dont have any firewall rules blocking it and that the service is active on that port
The ports are open in firewall?
The default https port is 443….
Ah. The corrupted generation.
😦
You know I’m right. Admit it mr. 420 man.
Starting XAMPP for Linux 8.1.6-0...
XAMPP: Starting Apache...fail.
XAMPP: Another web server is already running.
XAMPP: Starting MySQL...ok.
XAMPP: Starting ProFTPD...ok.
How can i disable the already running webserver?
you can simply open the terminal and go to /opt/lamp folder and open the lampp folder inside lampp folder you will see a running file i.e manager-linux-x64.run then you have to run the file and xampp will be displayed on screen then you can stop the webserver.
to run that file you have to give sudo permission , so running file you have to write sudo ./manager-linux-x64.run
dont forget to write that . symbol after sudo , hope this will work for you.
I finally got around to working on the Fedor 35>36 upgrade today. I was prepared to update, then a fresh install if that didn't fix the odd issue I was seeing.
I updated...
$sudo dnf update
Exported a list of all installed packages...
$rpm -qa | sort
Saved a copy of my home directory... booted from a USB so none of the files I wanted to copy would be in use...
$cp -a dude dude_bak
Then the upgrade as detailed here:
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/dnf-system-upgrade/
Results? ......
It's always nice when things go as planned
I'm not sure what specifically what fixed my issue, but while chasing down the few errors listed during this part of the upgrade...
$sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=36
... I uninstalled a few i686 versions of some openssl packages. So maybe that was the source of the problem, I dunno, but I still had the issue after removing those packages and rebooting. I'm just happy that I can download wallpaper, cursors, themes, colors, etc. again.
Actually... it did NOT go as planned. I was expecting to, and had planned for a fresh install if the update didn't solve the problem. I'm just gonna assume it was some good karma I had earned. heh heh
Plan B is still technically as planned
LOL... OK, fair point.
Now my problem is.... geez... what am I going to do with the rest of my evening? [chuckle]
That is always nice when it goes easier than expected
I don't understand why, but running a TURN server for Matrix under a NAT is not supported.
are you sure? that is strange. send the documentation for it.
(second paragraph under Requirements)
If it were possible to run behind a NAT, I have yet to get it working. Though if you have any ideas please let me know.
I use Matrix for everything (besides a few Discord servers sadly) and everything works except for calling.
Have you tried port forwarding?
I have tried a lot of different things. I can show the ports currently forwarded on my router.
That's all the TURN ports I have forwarded. In theory, this should allow it to run with TCP.
I would like to also forward the UDP port range, but my router only provides a way to forward one port at a time...
Yikes
the pain of port forwarding
Reason: Bad word usage
Oh my bad
I keep forgetting this server is pg
Frick!! Port forwarding
Imagine going through all the effort to find out your ISP blocks port forwarding
Just go around them
Yeah they can't block port forwarding but they can exclude the feature from your router. Simply using another router by replacing the ISP one or just connecting another router would work.
i also hate it when they throttle torrents
it's not always used for piracy smh
but it's nothing a public dns can't fix
Or a VPN
usually torrents are piracy lol
That's what some people use it for but there's plenty of legitimate uses
For example, most Linux OS download pages give the option to download by torrent because it's faster
some bigger file downloads like isos can be ridiculously slow if you don't use torrent
which is why "linux iso" is sometimes a euphemism for pirated content
loll
although i will not deny the fact that torrenting is faster for downloads
My issue right now is that in the router settings do in fact have the forwarding options but they just don't open any ports
That sounds like the routers problem
What's the backup software that I've seen mentioned here? Now that I've asked, I'll think if it in about 30 seconds. LOL
OK, it'll be more than 30 seconds. 🤦♂️
Borg?
Hmmm.... doesn't seem familiar.
I'm pretty sure I installed it... I'll dig around in dnfdragora.
Hmmm.... I have timeshift installed, that might be it.
Time shift
I’ve seen it recommended here
Deja dup is also good
(I prefer deja dup tbh)
cool, thanks! I was thinking "time machine" but that's for Mac. So, "timeshift" is surely what it was. So, I'll look into that option a bit.
Does anyone have any other suggestions for backup software that will be used to backup both Linux and Windows 10 to a drive attached to a router?
Deja dup can backup to network shares, that’s what I do
OK, will add that to the list.
I know time shift can do that too, and I think fal recommended it, but it seemed too complicated for me at the time I set up backups
timeshift seems to be more targeted at "system snapshots" rather than "file/data backup." That might be why it didn't meet your needs.
Looks like Deja Dup isn't available for Windows.
This is true
That’s strange, I thought it was cross platform
Good to know I guess
I am so happy to see a linux channel in this server
I would like to learn and only use Linux, but I mainly play games on my PC
What games
All the games
I will be blowing through any game that looks interesting.. and I haven't gotten to play games in almost 5 years so.. that's a lot.
Would you be content to play some of the games?
most likely not.
knowing my luck.. I'd come across a game I realllly want to play and wouldn't be able to on Linux.
Native, platinum, and gold are pretty much good to go. Silver is mostly working. Bronze and borked are avoid
And those are the ones that work on linux is what you are saying?
I take it Gold has a few issues with plat less and native none?
And by issues.. that means?
stutters? fps drops or whatever?
Platinum works perfectly, just hasn't been officially marked as native by the devs
Gold is almost perfect, most of the time it's something like an audio bug or a menu button looking funny
Ah ok.
I'll think about it for a bit before I make the leap.
I can still use google chrome?
Yup, that's native
Pulled up the reports for no man's sky, it got a hold rating for a little bit more texture flickering than in windows
So stuff like that, minor potential annoyances but still perfectly playable
Silver ratings the issues can start to affect game play
If there are apps that are windows only, but aren’t graphically intensive, look at Fmstrat/WinApps on GitHub. A lot of people don’t use Linux because of Microsoft word for instance. This lets you run a vm, but VERY light on resources, and the windows apps integrate with the Linux desktop.
So I’m trying to install Cutefish OS on my secondary laptop. I downloaded the ISO file and used Rufus to make a bootable drive. Whenever I choose the bootable drive on advanced restart, I just get the error “selected boot image did not authenticate”. Why?
This has never happened before
Sounds like secure boot being secure boot.
Have you turned it off? Most Linux distros don't support it.
When I reinstalled windows the last time I went from Linux I probably never turned it off
(I don't know Cutefish, but I had trouble with Arch when SB was on)
It’s not cutefish or anything
I didnt know if this issue would fit into linux because I’m trying to install linux or windows because it’s a boot issue and I’m going from windows
So I just sent here LOL
I’ll check and see if secure boot is on
heh yeah fair
I absolutely despise HP Bios
oh golly what'd they do now
One wrong button pre- BEEEEP
NOO
Pre-boot environments that play sounds are the worst.
I have a laptop from Asus and it plays a slash sound every single time it boots.
Reason: Bad word usage
You can turn it off, but then the subwoofer won't work when you boot.
OH GOD
OUCH
They could've used a more gentle beep.
Now it’s off
No it’s working now
I misread that.
Windows had a stroke after I turned it off though. I’m glad it let me boot from another drive because it would’ve forced me to enter my recovery key
Thanks!
Bitlocker was mad?
We are all working now
I haven’t used cutefish before so this will be my first time
Though I don't dual boot since I found Linux can do everything I need.
oo looks nice
My laptop could never dual boot
This is my secondary laptop
Main drive has 128gb
It’s sad. Very sad
Yeah definitely
My main laptop is an Acer
I run windows 10
Doesn’t support windows 11 unfortunately (which is stupid)
I have a family member that runs Arch on a 1GB hard drive with half a gig of RAM.
Lmao wow
It even sort of works.
2001 laptop, amazing keyboard and has amazing connectivity
I wish they made laptops like that nowadays.
oof. TPM requirement I guess?
What does Windows 11 even add?
AMD Ryzen 5 2500u
It's just a KDE reskin right?
Mainly a redesign. One of the best features is the ability to download android apps
I like the redesign though
You can get it on KDE ;)
What’s KDE?
It's a Linux desktop.
Oh it looks like windows?
Windows gets a lot of its features from it
Cutefish OS and Elementary OS both look like MacOS
By default it looks like Windows 10, but you can customize it like crazy and can download premade configurations to make it look like Windows 11.
Also you can run Android apps on Linux using Anbox/Waydroid.
Mind sending a download link?
I’ll have to check it out
I’m still new to Linux
That's interesting, I hadn't heard of either. I quite like the macOS aesthetic.
Yeah sure!\
Reason: Bad word usage
Sent!
Elementary os!
My 2nd favourite linux distro
What does it to better than others?
Fair.
I keep swapping between compositors. Can't decide on one.
Currently messing with Hyprland, really like it so far.
I made a pull request to add 1:1 touchpad gestures to it and my code was so bad that the maintainer implemented it themselves yesterday.
I gotta mess with the bar theming but else I'm pretty happy with how it functions.
perfect
looks nice
trying to install steam but I keep getting this error. Help?
I’m on ElementaryOS. I used a Debian installer to get the app itself but when I try to open the app I get that error
It may be worth checking to make sure libc6-i386 is installed, as that appears to resolve the issue for some people with that error.
I don’t know what that is or how to check it. I’m still fairly new to Linux. Could you please tell me?
on debian that should be sudo apt install libc6-i386
If its not installed, it will ask if you want to install it
Fixed it. Thanks!
👍
hm, it looks like a lot of dependencies are missing from the .deb installation of steam, it might be a better idea to reinstall steam through the package manager instead. See what running sudo apt install steam does.
i got the following
package ‘steam’ has no installation candidate
the thing is, steam doesn’t install as a .deb file
at least the last time I tried
I’ll try again though
How did you originally install it?
steam website
wait it did install as a deb file
That’s odd
I’m just gonna uninstall the old file and reinstall with a new one
hold on
yeah still doesn’t work
Oh wait, i remembered ElementaryOS has its own app store, try installing Steam through that.
not on there
i always check before downloading an app, if it were there I would’ve got it from there
I might try it from the snap store
As I recently got that
Yeah snao store worked
run sudo apt-cache search steam and see what results you get
steam should already be in the elementaryOS repos
try running apt install steam again
if youre on elementary, I seem to remember that you need to install a package from their app store to be able to install .debs
yes, its called eddy
its a package extractor for .deb files
yeah
found something, try running these commands in order and then try installing steam:
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo add-apt-repository multiverse
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
its apparently an issue with steam being 32bit and requiring certain libraries.
when i do the second command, "sudo add-apt-repository multiverse", it says "sudo: add-apt-repository: command not found"
do i continue orrr?
that might have been a typo by the original user, remove the add part
apt-get instead
let me look
at something
apt install software-properties-common
after that is installed you should be able to then run the add-apt-repository command
then the rest should be fine?
yeah
after those 4 commands have been run, you should finally be able to install steam from apt.
Wow. Linux chat hasn’t been this active since emy and falcie and me had random discussions is here. Lol
Not in the server any more
Oh looks like they were banned
Wait really? For doing what?
Too much genital talk it seems
The official reason listed by the mod that did the ban was trolling but it seems like compound issues
i dm'd with them some
ah
How can I create a 5GHz hotspot using my AX200 wifi card?
I can't find a guide that doesn't use ifconfig which is deprecated on Arch in favor of ip.
I'm not sure but I'd imagine pc wifi cards don't have support hotspots
They do, depending on the chipset. Just often not in the official drivers. Usually you need to use Linux to set it to AP mode.
Have you seen the Arch Wiki? https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/software_access_point
I love Android.
Bruh it's a link lol. Silly old Droid.
Ahh makes sense
Well you can always check if it supports AP mode still
iw list
It does.
And I can make 2.4GHz hotspots fine.
It says 5GHz is supported, but fails to create one.
Wait I got something!
This succeeds: sudo create_ap wlan0 lo 'alvr' '' --freq-band 5 -c 157 --ieee80211ac
But ALVR still has really bad performance on my headset :/
Maybe it's not a network issue and I'm just being dumb.
@fallow belfry was it you and I talking about card readers?
Yes it was
The OS on the card reader is MX200001/RFS3025100 . So.. whatever that is lol
Lol that’s great
What is?
I didn’t google it but I’m assuming it’s mx Linux
Unless it’s something totally random
I gave my 4-H speech yesterday. It was "How to install Linux." Because of how much homework and classes I have, I wasn't able to practice it, ever. But I won champion.
(I have talked so much about Linux before, that it wasnt hard)
Practical Experience > Practice 😁 Congratulations!

I am nerd
🥳
honestly we're all nerds here
Here's a kinda nerdy question... has anyone used any of the "privacy-focused" distro's like the ones on this list? I'm trying to choose a distro to suggest to friends if they have a temporary need for privacy. I like the idea of running from a USB drive that can be quickly and easily destroyed if necessary. I have Tails and Kodachi installed and will be tinkering with them.
https://www.techradar.com/news/best-linux-distro-privacy-security
Tails has always been my go to for privacy
Isn't kodachi designed to be livebooted?
Ive used tails before, worked for its purpose, not for daily though since it does wipe everything on reboot, qubes I was thinking of trying but never got to it
Maybe once I get a new drive
Yes, both Kadochi and Tails are designed to be booted from a USB drive. But Kadochi can be installed like a regualar OS... I think.
yeah, Qubes is interesting... but I'm trying to decide what would be the simplest option that I could suggest to folks who aren't necessarily tech savvy.
I have never tried a strictly security focused distro before. I understand the concept though. I would wonder what the difference between a live boot of one of those (qubesos, etc) and a simple vanilla Ubuntu live usb stick. I know that networking can be a question, as would be the tor browser. But installing tor on a live install isn’t hard lol. (Been there, done that)
Mostly tracking data and telemetry is the difference. A privacy OS will disable as much of those as it can, and what it can't it will clear often.
Here’s a question- when I use a live usb stick of say, plain Ubuntu, when I unplug it, do any traces remain on the stick itself?
That depends if you're using a persistence file
Normally no if you don't have persistence
But a user can still be tracked by hardware specs, IP, and such by data stored elsewhere
A privacy OS might automatically block requests for that data or else give false info when it asks for things like screen resolution
Interesting. Yeah, I’ve never needed a persistence file.
But network is definitely the easy way to track I guess.
Before I used tor, I had no clue about the screen resolution thing if you used it maximized.
I’m still confused as to how that could be used against you though….
Yup.
Let's say you've got it maximized on your laptop with a 1920x1200 screen. They'll be able to tell based on that resolution alone that it's VERY likely you're using a laptop.
So when they go to raid you for doing questionable things over tor they know what to look for.
It's typically cp and markets they go for the most
Markets as in black markets or… the first thing you said
Dark net markets
Mostly black markets for drugs, stolen credit cards, and "services"
👀 the nasty side of people
The dirtiest of the filth yes
People automatically think that Linux=hacker it seems. I’ve been (jokingly) called a hacker by my friends, and people I just meet. Because they have a messed up perception of Linux
Just say you use Kali instead of saying Linux and you'll get one of two reactions, weird looks from people that know, and blank stares while nodding from the uninitiated.
It was so funny, a year or two ago my younger brother was doing this 4h workshop where they had all these people from different professions come talk to the group over Zoom (Covid, y’know). The only one I listened to was the cybersecurity/pentesting guy. I asked in chat “do you use kali often”. The 4h extension educator read it so uncertainly, but the guy answered right away and explained how he used it and stuff. It was so funny when everyone was asking what kali and Linux was
I've used Kali a bit myself, both at home and on the job. I had a router get bricked from a failed dd-wrt flash (totally my fault, don't skip steps lol) and I had to use it to break into the ssh to restore it to factory.
I’ve cracked wifi passwords with kali
That's a common use too, but it's gotten a lot harder lately. There's a lot more security and wps attacks don't really work now so brute force attack is all you can do.
I’m pretty sure the way I did was four way handshake
I copied the commands from a tutorial somewhere lol
So I didn’t completely understand the whole process
Yeah you capture the handshake and then brute force the hash from a rainbow table or dictionary
I have a dictionary you can't use. It's about 150gb uncompressed
I'd have no way to send it to you, not without giving you FTP access to my server and that's not happening
It's custom
I could store one there
You'd use a tool to create a table based on a dictionary and added masks that automatically deletes invalid WPA passwords
It gets MASSIVE
The largest I've seen is 20tb uncompressed
It would take months for a single 3090 to go through
WWAAAAAAAHHHHH
I was gonna say, are the days of carrying your laptop over to your friends house and hacking their wifi, gone now?
Yeah not happening. Even the default ISP passwords are a lot more secure. Comcast uses 2-3 words with special characters and numbers.
Aw man
Well I’m going to bed.
I might be generating my own dictionary though lol
Later tho
G' night
Gnight
LMFAO

That would work... If my motherboard wasn't in RMA right now and I could use my computer
