Not sure if you need to unplug it physically
But you need to get into the boot menu on the computer
alright and change the boot to the usb
Yeah
bet
wym formatting features? like using bold text etc?
Oh
Yea don’t need them then, I do need Linux though, I only use Microsoft word to jott down notes
You can use literally any text editor for that
I'd recommend obsidian since it has built in markdown
Oh bet
Wish I could find documentation on what BE validation means fully
1st one
Now you have the installation process
So I click try or install?
Imma get rainbolt to identify your address by the leaves that are visible there
Depends on what you want, I guess you don't have to wipe windows, but I'm not sure if there might be issues as a result of doing that because windows
Based
Whar
ventoy my beloved
Hey now I can’t use my usb anymore? It says write file protected?
I tried erasing it using disk part
Didn’t work
How is it that whenever people get into linux they get issues so random you have no idea they even got to that point
Fr
I’m trying to erase my USBstick but it won’t let me lol
Idk why it won’t open
chmod 777 it or something
Huh
Lol I guess it’s about to die if it’s read only
I think formatting it using the flash utility should work
I have to use Rufus again to reformat my flash drive iirc
I just choose the non-bootable option so it becomes a regular volume I can turn back into a file mover, or if I need it for another bootable media like clonezilla, I flash its ISO into it
which flass utliity>
Whichever one you use to flash ISOs
Although I guess you need one that's in Linux instead
What do those volume names say
thats all it says
i just wanna clear the usb stick for i can put my files back on it
If you mouse over the volume label
BE is available on Linux looks like
Though idk if it has the same function Rufus does for just formatting
i cajn use rufus if that makes ut easer, so do i just download Rufus on the usb>?
but i dont need a os on the usb stick i just want it to be a normal usb stick agian
ohh i got u
do i do portable or standard
Whichever, are you in a windows vm?
nah im just on my pc xd
in Ubuntu?
nah the ubuntu is on my laptopl im on my gaming computer
want me to plug the usb in my laptop with ubunut
¯_(ツ)_/¯
If you want to try formatting the drive with Rufus, gotta do that on windows
did this
And you don't put the formatting program onto the drive you're formatting
Are you able to delete the two volumes on the right in disk mgmt?
And then expand the leftmost one
That way it becomes a single volume, one drive
Ahh the one in the middle isn't removable in disk mgmt?
correct
Yeah I'd format it in Rufus lol
Gets rid of pesky volumes that you don't need anymore
alright how do i use my windows pc to do that? just download rufus?
Yeah download and open
Make sure to select the right device, non bootable, and you can use the defaults for everything else
bet then click starT?
Partition scheme MBR vs GPT, MBR is the older scheme that's compatible with old systems, GPT is the new scheme that should be better, but you can probably leave it default too
Yeah, start, then it has two confirmations
Now you have a regular flash drive again
do i delete this out of the usb drive
Oh Rufus uses those to create a drive that displays its name and icon, but I don't think it's needed honestly
It probably displays a name and icon just fine
Without the autorun and icon file being placed in the drive
oh alright
Reasoning behind it, windows doesn't allow alphabets from other languages in the drive name normally I think, so Rufus added a feature that forces it to allow you to name it something Russian or Japanese or whatever
why can't everything just work 🙏
law of physics
Hey so my WiFi isn’t working on the Linux laptop? It says make sure WiFi adapter is installed
so i'm switching to linux now bc screw microsoft
how's OpenSuse with Plasma sound?
daily driver, pretty much just basic stuff, nice UI, browsing using zen or firefox
the only time i'll be using windows (still lol, gotta rufus WIN11.) is when I wanna play or use davinci resolve unless it works fine on the distro
i already mostly prepared my sata to be wiped and 500gb of it will be used for linux
so 500gb m.2, 500gb partitioned from sata for windows
and then 500gb on the sata for linux
Davinci Resolve have been working on Linux for a while now
For games...
Well I've had an easier time running games than I had trying to get Microsoft Word to run (It doesn't)
Proton works wonders
You can’t use certain common codecs on the free version iirc. The performance is great but you can’t edit all audio/video formats/codecs
Oh wtf?
That sucks
Eh?
What?
Are those the supported
Oh does it not have CPU encoding?
Wtf?
Nvm reading the wrong thing
Eh? Wtf?
Does it not have hardware acceleration for H264/5
For non Nvidia
Only nvidia, and only with the expensive paid studio version
wtf?
would this video be sufficient in everything I need to do to get the os running?
as for making it dual bootable i'm not quite sure on how to do it yet, I forgot
and i wonder how different (probably not) it would be for my case with LEAP rather than Tumbleweed
Correct
Welcome to our step-by-step guide on installing OpenSUSE Tumbleweed with the sleek and powerful KDE Plasma 6 desktop environment! In this video, we'll walk you through the entire installation process, from downloading the OpenSUSE Tumbleweed ISO to configuring KDE Plasma 6 to suit your preferences.

You just need some boot loader that can read multiple efis
Grub, systemd boot, refind
They can all boot to multiple operating systems
Did the AUR get DDOS'd again
I would not be surprised
videos with some acc incoding or whatever its called don't work
i dont remember exactly but
If you mean aac then you can use opus or pcm
Average Arch experience
"I use Arch btw 🤓" users when the AUR gets DDOS'd for the millionth time this month /s
It is down again
Billions of redditors must die
Billions of desktops must use linux
Trillions of windows must shatter
AUR is back for now
At least it's not the main repos being trolled
That'd be extremely annoying
Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we take a look at a new development that makes that eventual switch to Linux even easier. Winboat is a tool that now easily let's you run your Windows programs underneath Linux in a way that makes it almost seamless. How do you do this? Let's find out! Thanks for watching!
Like, Comment and S...
I immediately thought about this being a possibility when I saw projects like kasm able to run linux/win apps or even desktops streamed through web browsers
Not perfect but so cool
It's pretty meh solution
Winapps is better
Thumbnail is also clickbait
It's not running a Windows app on Linux it's running a virtual machine on Linux then running a Windows app
Yeah
Doesn't seem like anything groundbreaking
Like you said it is basically winapps
It's winapps but worse

Isn’t that the same thing winapps does?
I read it as just a alternative to winapps with slightly simpler setup
I guess yeah lol
Maybe better looking home screen?

I don’t mind it though
It’s new so it won’t be that good right now
I still think this is a good thing because it might keep people on linux more
Yeah the goal is always to make it easier. Even years ago you were still able to play some games on linux but it was kind of a pain in the ass and if you weren’t familiar with linux then forget about it. Now thanks to improvements its so much easier basically anyone can do it
I think it's more of a functionality thing
It's not really particularly good
It's more limited than winapps
My problem is really how people market it as this groundbreaking thing
It's not it's just winapps
Also on a sidenote
@fast mango could you try building an aur package for me?
I think mfs are DDOSing this package
Unfortunately I am not on cachy rn
@sand pecan
But I would assume that they are doing it lol
Lol
Best Debian advertisment
Can anyone help me with this? I downloaded Ubuntu desktop using balenaetcher but when I plugged the USB into my i5-9400F and GTX 1660 Super i couldn’t boot Ubuntu It only gave me this error

I just built and ran a server on HexOs(Truenas) but I have no clue where the server Adress is.
Help?
I seriously think I wasted money buying HexOs.
uhh hexos by default links to their domain. I think it's mentioned in the setup guide which I can't find but I believe you go to this site to discover and setup: https://deck.hexos.com/
@drifting grove yeah pretty sure this is it
I did everything on the truenas guide, Hexos forums, and the video of the creator of Minos.
They never worked.
Oh crap. I forgot to mention that it was for Minecraft servers.
Wait what
I used all 3 softwares. Minecraft java and bedrock, but didn't work. So I used Mineos, followed everything and still couldn't launch the server. Even with the new har and everything.
Can't offer any advice on hexos/mineos but (in the event you want to just cut your losses) I followed this guide a while ago to get my server up and running using Ubuntu Server, webmin, and Amp (costs $10) and it was pretty seamless.
Welcome to my latest video featuring a build a setup of a sub $100 game server!

Guys am a beginner programmer but, is it possible ( or something relatively achievable for someone of my skill level ) to make it that my android wallpaper is the output of an opengl program i made
I know enough opengl to make some sick android rice if this was possible
I saw that video but thought the guy was cringe so I clicked off.
ok?
It has it as a Truenas thing, not Hexos it's self. They are hella slow to develop anything.
Cringe isn't the right word. I just can't describe it.
I am debating using Linux. Can someone give me their genuine thoughts on it?
I like to Overclock, Play Games, and I use Consumer Production software like the Adobe Suite, Blender, and so on.
Adobe doesn't work natively on linux
Gotcha, thank you.
Yeah gonna have to use affinity and davinci resolve
Depending on what adobe software, you could set up winapps or something of the like for whatever program
Winapps?
Basically runs a windows vm for the apps
But that’s if wine can’t run it well
Seems Linux still has very limited app support.
Do games run better on Linux or? @fast mango
It is getting better but things like adobe are still not so good
You can run photoshop but it depends on the version and whatever tweaks if necessary
Affinity works better on here though
And for games it also depends
The nvidia dx12 issue is still not fixed, so you will get a perf hit with dx12
Some games are a little faster, some are a little slower
Warframe runs the same compared to windows, deep rock galactic and minecraft are faster
Minecraft is an exception though, with the last time I benchmarked there was like a 30% increase on my world
Oh helldivers is also faster than other games
red dead 2 goes from parity with windows to like 2% faster
Typically though you will see parity with windows, or up to +/-7%. When you average the games tested, it would be the same or slightly faster than windows

Ray tracing also hits harder on linux which brings down the average
At least for amd with mesa
Thank you for the content I will take a look soon.
Nvidia didnt care at all about the dx12 hit until recently
They said they are looking into it or working on it or whatever
It will be fixed in 2026, I think early 2026
Could be wrong about when exactly though but at least next year, probably in the first half
I am starting to think using Linux for a daily machine is far more pain than gain.
Also I'll brb
alr
Can you elaborate?
So the usually oc settings are available for AMD but not Nvidia?
Yeah there is no voltage control for nvidia
You can change the clocks and power
I see.
I am beginning to think that Linux is not for me, at least as a main system. I'd still use Linux for servers though.
Looks like there is a cope one can do
https://github.com/ilya-zlobintsev/LACT/wiki/Frequently-asked-questions#how-to-undervolt-nvidia-gpus
Linux users have been unable to under-volt NVidia GPUs since the Kepler days when NVidia removed that facility from the System Management Interface (SMI). In essence, under-volting allows you to run a higher clock frequency at a lower GPU core voltage and thus at a lower heat load making GPUs mor...
Looks like the cope has been around for some time
hi all, i just switched to linux today (using linux mint.) im super happy most if not all of my steam games are now compatible, however, i cant seem to figure out how to force my laptop to use its dedicated GPU rather than the integrated one. on windows they have the nvidia control panel where you can easily force it, however that's not the case on linux/mi nt. i looked into it online and it said you could use the "nvidia x server settings" application to do the same thing but i dont think you can. anyone know how?
@fast mango
Already looked at this thread
I have an older laptop, so Vulkan doesn’t work for me (with the one game I’m currently trying to play atm, BeamNG)
but I just wanted to use that a graded graphics all the time across any game at the very least
Try running sudo prime-select nvidia and reboot if it goes through
I did this already, got it from that article, didn’t work
You might have to configure each game to use dedicated graphics
I don’t know how to do that/if every game can do that
There’s no way to do that in BeamNG settings for example
I may just have to go back to windows
You can add this steam launch variable to any game __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia %command%
Right click the game and click properties
The launch options line will be the first thing that comes up
I don't know much at all about nvidia and linux
I have never used nvidia on linux yet
This didnt work
I kinda want btop as my desktop or wallpaper. I don't want it enough to make it happen... but I'm curious whether I'd actually like it or not. I do like my current random B&W photo wallpaper though.
I actually thought about that at some point lol
If you do it, make good notes. Then I'll proofread and test them (and convert to Fedora+KDE if necessary) so you can post them online. heh heh

Might not like this answer but try cachyos
It has great nvidia support
Is it based on Ubuntu?
No
Arch based but still easy to use
I guess the deb version of this would be pikaos
bros fancy with it
you seem like the kinda guy to say "me lad" too ngl
It changes based on the situation
Lol
I've spent 8 hours today backing up my data installing arch copying the home directory from old to new installation then fixing all the issues
i didn't even install everything i need yet,
but honestly it was really an eye openning experience
cuz when you first install arch you don't overload yourself with information you just kinda add stuff slowly overtime
but when you task yourself with rebuilding everything you did soo far in one day only know you realize how intricate an OS is
everything from getting the correct fonts going to getting nautilus to launch files that are read by cli using the correct console emulator
New linux user here. Just installed bazzite
Trying to bring back all my stuff from external harddrives
When i load up diskgenius it shows that I have only 1 drive and theres only 76.6 gbs available
I have actually have 2 and 1 is 1 tb and the other is 2 tbs . Help pretty please?
is it loaded in the file explorer, probably dolphin
mounted*
Fixed. By deleting all the partitions and switching to windows :P
huh

Ok, so I have a Moto G stylus 5G 2023 phone running Android 14, and it has this annoying behavior where I shut the phone off completely, but then it turns back on when I plug in the charger. Is this exclusive to my phone or Android version? Just curious...
You should be able to turn it off after you plug it in, Android does let you charge while powered off.
I will try with my Pixel 10 (Android 16) tonight if I remember...
Ok I can turn off my phone and plug it in and it stays off. If I tap the power button it will show me the battery percentage.
I rescued another usable box from the recycling pile at work (specs below) and decided to use it to test distros. At the moment I've installed 3 varieties of Fedora (KDE, Gnome, "Jam") and it occurred to me that /boot and /boot/efi could get confusing and have issues. Does anyone have any tips for managing GRUB and the boot folder when multiple Linux distros are installed?
The new box is a Dell OptiPlex 7050 SFF. Nothing special but still usable:
500GB NVME drive, 8GB RAM, i5-7500
So, I’m heavily considering migrating to a Linux OS. Mainly with the way things have been going in the digital space, I’m opting for some more autonomy. I still plan on gaming quite a bit including some media editing (video and audio). Any advice and a step in the right direction will be helpful.
-User on another social channel is looking for advice
you have to be somewhat well versed in computers and have to be willing to learn another software and how to troubleshoot it. there are many distros that make switching from windows for gaming and general use very doable but finding the right one may require some trial and error. bazzite is a popular option that is designed to work out of the box and is relatively straight forward to use. But for users that are a little more advanced and want more fine grain control the easy of use can make it frustrating to tune or install specific tools which is where many have been choosing to go with a distro like cachyos
I still wouldn't use daily if you rely on something like adobe software but there are other alternatives to editing software, like davinci for video editing.
Issue with bazzite is that when you use it like a computer, the immutable feature will start getting in your way
If you do only gaming and nothing else, then ok fine
But if you want to use it as a computer over a long period of time, you’ll be trying to install things or change things the immutable os won’t like
You can get photoshop working but there is more to it than just double clicking and running with wine
Despite nobara being a gaming oriented os, it is still great for general usage
It’s basically fedora+
Has its own apps that make things easier too, like cachy
exactly, they have a app store that is built in that's nice but if you start going beyond that it's gonna get in your way
What would be the best Linux version to use for solely gaming and emulation?
I know nothing about Linux and I wanna use it for a project
Probably bazzite if you aren’t very familiar with linux
I have 3 "spins" of Fedora installed (Gnome, KDE, Jam) and was going to install a couple of flavors of Ubuntu. But, Ubuntu wants to use the first EFI partition on the drive (I have several), which isn't possible because Fedora is using that one. So rather than starting over... no Ubuntu... and no Mint. Pop OS requires a 1GB /boot/efi so that's not gonna work because the existing EFI partitions are 200MB, which should be plenty.
what about mint debian
I tried Mint... it's based on Ubuntu.
There is that mint but they also maintain one based on debian too
I think it is at the bottom of the downloads
Ooohhh... gotcha. OK, will look for that. At the moment, I only have the Ubuntu-based version on my Ventoy drive.
All good
Ah ha.... it's the "LMDE" version.

The LMDE installer has a couple of quirks also, but allowed selection of the partitions I needed.
- it assigned /boot/efi to ALL the EFI partitions. I just had to change all but the one I wanted and it was OK.
- It was telling me that the EFI partition didn't have the correct boot flag, but when I looked at it via Gparted, the flag was set. The installer actually meant "you must format the EFI partition to VFAT"... even though it already was.
Cool... LMDE gets added to the distro buffet. 😀
Sooooo... I have installed the following, and still have partitions for 3 more:
= Fedora (KDE)
= Fedora (Gnome)
= Fedora (XFCE)
= Fedora Jam
= Kali
= LMDE
= MX
= Pop OS (I added another ESP partition to make Pop OS happy)
Next I need to polish rEFInd a bit. It's working but I want to change some of the icons etc.
I guess I should at least mention the objective just in case any one cares. LOL I want to install an app (Firestorm viewer for Second Life) on a variety of versions of Linux so I can make some notes on what packages are required to get the app running, then share that info with others who use the app. Plus, I'm just generally curious about how to setup a system with multiple distros installed.
Maybe I'll also find a low profile GPU to add. Hmmmm. heh heh
What is bro doing with 8 installations

I already told ya in the 8:23pm comment.
I just found "umbrelOS" via this video by "Raid Owl":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eR3kKMOoUjs
It's based on Debian but the installer only has one option: Use the entire drive. 🥹 So I threw an SSD in the box and am installing to that.

Holy shit they did it
Figured it would happen eventually since the BC-250 exists and tinkers have their hands on it
Yeah was just a matter of time really
The bigger issue to me is the firmware patches sony will be pushing out
Gotta make sure you are on a certain version or not the latest install or something, but I also do think that they have old versions that you flash

I'm trying to find a low profile, single slot GPU that doesn't require extra power. It'll be going into a Small Form Factor Dell Optiplex with an i5-7500 and 8GB of DDR4. Does anyone have experience using something like the Nvidia Tesla P4 on Linux? Is that type of GPU complicated to setup?
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/tesla-p4.c2879
pretty sure nvidia already doesn't play great with linux, idk about a 10 year old workstation card
Tesla p4 isn't a workstation card, it's a server card
It also requires server airflow through the card
(Because it doesn't have a fan of its own)
If you're trying to make a compact build, this GPU would not be ideal as you'll need to make a duct and attach a fan to it to cool the GPU which does need a bit of space
In terms of drivers, I'm not sure if you'll have better luck with them since it's a datacenter card that probably is meant for Linux servers... But idk if the drivers are publicly accessible
It looks like they are
if you are just looking for light hardware acceleration you can look at some of the lower power intel cards. I use a intel a310 in my server and works perfectly fine. single slot, small, no external power
Thanks, yeah I don't know how I missed that. 🤦 I guess I got caught up in "Oooo, this will physically fit into the space." LOL So yeah.... P4 is no longer under consideration. The next best thing that seems like it should work is the Quadro P1000.
AH HA!!! I found a solution!!!

Trying to set up a triple boot to add Kali on top of my current dual boot of Pop! OS and windows 11, made an error and overwrote Pop! OS‘s bootloader and was forced to clean reinstall. Any ideas on a third party bootloader that I could use, or if so how can I set up Kali in a way that won’t install GRUB and trash systemd?
I'm using rEFInd on my "buncha distros installed in one box."
https://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/
This seems to be working perfectly, thank you
Yay! I'm happy to be helpful for a change. 😀
The Ubuntu 25.10 install experience is shite. Change my mind.
There's a recurring "system program problem" error pop-up that is "a common problem." Also, the installer doesn't see my drive. The Kubuntu installer worked, though I didn't click the final "install" button so it could still fail after that.
I just tried Ubuntu 24.04 with the same result. Wow.
Has anyone here ever used an Airalo eSim before to get service in another country? (my current carrier doesn't offer any international plans to my knowledge...)
Has anyone here tried steamos on pc
Ik is not officially supported yet but I wanna get either that or arch within the next couple years(can't rn because parental controls, and i respect my parents)
Who is affected
If your kernel was built between 2017 and the patch — which covers essentially every mainstream Linux distribution — you're in scope.Copy Fail requires only an unprivileged local user account — no network access, no kernel debugging features, no pre-installed primitives. The kernel crypto API (AF_ALG) ships enabled in essentially every mainstream distro's default config, so the entire 2017 → patch window is in play out of the box.
(to be more clear, this isn't an issue that affects personal devices, just multiuser devices for public use or for users that are not meant to obtain administrative permissions)
are you able to use vms to run linux on it
Yeah I've got a living room/couch PC that runs Bazzite
Works quite well
bazzite isnt related to steamos though, but it's the option that is currently supporting custom systems unlike steamos
Yeah I guess it's technically not steamOS but it's your best bet for running "steamOS" on a PC
NixOS is strange. 😀 I was copy/pasting some lines into fstab just like I have for years and the changes kept disappearing. Then I did some poking around online (which I should have done before installation, LOL) and figured out that fstab is auto-generated by the main config file.
Interesting
I left my screwdriver kit at my weekend repair shop place so I'll be going over there later this morning to take out the nvme drive and see if that can shock it into updating the boot options list...
ok so this is """resolved""", as in, it's too technical for me to solve.
When the NVMe is installed in the laptop, all boot options except the operating system (Qubes OS) don't work. Bazzite USB key was identifying itself as "Fedora" since it's Fedora-based but remained visible even when unplugged.
I suspect something was just adding all boot options it could see to itself but not mapping their locations properly(?)
Back when it ran Windows 10 it had no problem booting off USB drives so this is definitely a bug caused by Grub or Qubes.
When I take the NVMe out it can boot the Bazzite live iso no problem.
I'm going to keep Qubes on it for now because I only use this laptop for playing with distros and Qubes is incredibly unique. (I think I can put the NVMe in another computer and either wipe it or install a different OS onto it if I wanted.)
so im having issues with openrgb running on nobara and i have a raspberry pi just sitting around that i dont know what to do with is there any adapters or anything i could buy to hook it up to just the RGB connectors for my fans and just control it in the pi?

android is linux

I am iPhone gang even though os isn’t that great compared, aside from ease of use
android based
i would like to get a chromebook-like laptop (passively cooled, small) and put linux on it
but chromebooks come with a search button instead of caps lock, and no super key
search button can be bound as caps lock in chromeos settings- unfortunately, there is no super key

IMAGINE USING LINUX TO PLAY GAMES
omg wait i didnt know you could change it to capslock
this is lifechanging
thank you

Coding is like making a redstone machine if u think about it
making a redstone machine is like coding
because its based around coding concepts
U lost me
I've got a bit of a problem
I really want to use Arch Linux but my tp link wifi card only has drivers for windows
And I can't use ethernet where my PC is
Someone said I could use wine or something to use it but I'm not exactly sure what to do
Just get a DONGLE
My laptop was dual boot and had the same issues a cheap usb WiFi dongle should remedy the problem
I liked this wifi card though... eh
are the dongles slow?
what I mean by that is mine has 2 fat antennas coming out the back (you can't see them, they're fine) and wifi is faster than any other device in my house
@brave isle what tplink card is it specifically
give me one second
yep
trying to figure out what chipset it is exactly
i know its intel wifi 6.... but looking for an exact model
yeah
looking for the vendor of the chip found on it though
for example i have an asus one, but the chip is broadcom
oh
i assume you have iwd installed?
Not necessarily
Looking for some good linux projects to get me started. Any resources?
Interests? Security, distro customizing, making a lamp server?
installing windows
I prefer Mac OS really gets the cores runnin cold if you know what I mean
lol
kvm/qemu is fun to set up
people running linux do
nothing to see here, just a hydrogen atom
(stolen from linuxmemes btw)
lol my friend is genius
lol
sorry for late reply but thanks @wanton snow
im half asleep rn
using remote desktop to do school in bed
very sleepy
gamer bed
yes school from bed xD
I love using Kali linux for metasploit but, I am trying to venture to new things. Whats a lamp Server?
https: //www.hackthebox. eu Might be fun for you, And a Lamp server would be a web service stack that’s on Linux.
kali cringe
Why cringe?
lmao.. no way! You hacking? lol
From pen testers everywhere.. how bout no

no what? like, its kali is trash or....?
Kali is what you use for pen testing, More than just skids use it
Thats what I thought lol
You should definitely build your own kali with a tool box for a usb, that’s a starter project, also familiarize yourself with cmd or else 🔫
Yeah, I use to work heavy with linux years ago but, stopped :(. I have to get everything fresh again.
Good skills to have
HAHAHA they deleted your first message
WTF
does anyone know of a good guide to install openvpn. i tried it before but failed using ubuntu
tag me
step 1: use wireguard
are u being the server or a client
exactly what i just said?
are you connecting to a vpn server or are you setting up a vpn server
Setting up
just use this
What's the perks or benefits compared to the both
wireguard is better in literally every way
Okay I'll look more into it tomorrow
hmm
hmm
hmm
hmm
why is linus spelled weird in this channel
No
Does anybody here know a tool like YUMI to create Multiboot USB-Sticks, but on Linux?
It’s the operating system not the person
Who uses Linux
Me
what is uefi
its like bios but cooler
have not checked if Windows broke my Debian installation yet
wait wut
Better like Mike know lol
ye, gonna test it in some other channels but idk if i bypass weggbot in channels
Nay
It's because this entire channel group is new
Ye
Since we split #windows-ios off from Computer-Hardware
When u have old hardware, games run at very low fps due to windows... linux is much lighter as an os and in some cases i say an improvement of as much as 30 fps... running linux on top of windows for these reasons is 0iq
Finally getting my Lenovo laptop. Ubuntu or linux mint? I heard ubuntu are more on top of their updates.
i seem to recall fedora being really good for lenovo stuff
to the point where lenovo will sell thinkpads with fedora preinstalled
Hello Again Internet People... im got my raid controller and stuff up but every time i try to boot a linux distro
but every time i do it just says something along the lines of
INVALID KERNAL ELF FILE
SYSTEM HALTED
i have tried remaking the USB installer multiple times
but it still has this issue
i just want something to boot into to make sure these drives are working
like do a format or something
Update i just tried taking all the drives off the raid controller and directly connecting them to a standard sata controller
and i also tried reseating memory nothing is working. I have gotten this system to boot up before with this config. nothing has changed besides the fact i added a few fans to the case
ping me if anyone has any possible ideas for solutions
*note: sometimes it would do the invalid ELF file thing before i messed with it and i would have to restart it like 10 times before it would finnaly boot i need it to boot every time.
You are right. Completely forgot about Fedora. I heard it's even more stable than ubuntu.
Update again have tried messing around in the bios and such still no improvement
also got desperate and just let the thing run, in hopes it just needed to warm up or something like a car
any and all assistance is appreciated
ima post this on toms hardware and see if i can get any help
tbh thats how i feel rn
Anyone know abut kali
its just arch for skids
literally just arch with some pentesting tools
That would be black arch, not kali
Kali is Debian based
Anyone know abut ethical hacking stuff can someone teach me plz
there are some good yt channels for that stuff
Plz can u send me the links
shouldn’t attack the ethical ones lol
hacking is hacking
youtube shuts them down quick
😂
only channel i remember off top of my head is david bombal. might be able to find something along the path
doesnt matter what intentions are
its like telling you how to make bombs for educational purposes
oh lili you would be surprised some of the videos on youtube lol. tbh there are some real ones on yt but that is all ill say. youtube is very slow to take some videos down
🖥️
im sure they are lmfao
but im saying that stuff does get taken down
and its harder to find
Can i find some thing from tor browser
But i m scared to install it
takes quite a bit of time to find. ye some of the strangest i’ve seen was entire copyrighted movies uploaded and not taken down til a few months later
tor is safe
i love the ones that are like "not star wars just a slime video"
and the desc is like "guys please comment on how good the slime is or ill get banned"
or like
the bee movie but nothing is changed this is just straight up piracy
as those ones get more views youtube eventually notices
Baabababbaba
im guessing youre a child who thinks hackers are cool lol
cause the feds dont
Nope
btw does youtube have any other main competitors
peertube
Bye bye
Hmm never heard of it
tor lol

@shrewd sluice This is a nice resource https://overthewire.org/wargames/
Many fun games
jk but tor is full of honeypots
i've just installed arch linux and i've rebooted. i forgot to install network manager and i can install it because i dont have wifi
and i cant use iwctl
so
i've got a bit of a problem

i have them all now
the whole gang's here
yep
i have the infinity stones of the operating system world
combined they cannot be stopped from running any program known to man
bsd: helo
aw shiz not him

Temple OS: HElO
the glowies made sure it was end of support tho
yep
but
here
works with qemu
dewit
i must
it is done
my computer hated trying to virtualize 3 different operating systems while 2 of them have all 4 of my cores set aside
Thought about maybe doing that in future, Linux base os and virtualize others on needs
thats what i will really be gitting into after i get my new cpu as the one that i litteraly just bought is slowly dying in the graphics
yea i was gonna dual boot but decided to go full linux
although setting up kvm's can be a pain
atleast the way i do it
VPN for linux? I need more security when searching through tor.
maybe you can take a look at something like mullvad, expressvpn, torguard
mullvad for consumer
torguard is very bad, please dont tell people to get a US based vpn
i dont really mind one being us based, general rule of thumb you should use is, if its connected to the internet its not safe no matter what you do.
its less safe and they want privacy
it also does absolutely nothing making it worth a recommendation
costs same as mullvad too
also
their TOS binds user to dmca
mullvad literally does not care at all
if its in the us it can be ordered to give up user info
from what ive seen its a vpn and it does what a vpn does. not many security breaches known that they haven't acknowledged, main thing people don't like about it is that its us based. but you should be fine without a vpn unless you are doing phishy stuff which you shouldn't do anyway.
and these are people we are talking about I wouldn't be surprised if every country gave up info like that
such examples of this exact thing happening are: riseup being forced to lie abt no log and give logs to FBI, IPvanish doing the same thing, and Lavabit giving encryption keys to US gov
it is irresponsible to recommend a product designed to hide oneself online that is based in one of the biggest surveillance states
express and mullvad are the only providers I would consider
im just saying everything on the internet is monitored no matter where you are. you shouldnt trust any no log policy, and if you don't do anything phishy you should be fine.
i trust swiss no log more than i trust US no log
idgaf if switzerland knows my browsing history
would prefer for the US to not know it though
chances are they could find out if they wanted to. which come to the point that using no vpn, proxy or such might be best in cases, trying to find a needle in a haystack
nah because using no vpn just means your isp knows everything you do
which is linked to your home address
dont do bad things ez
then they dont care
why not recommend the best product?
thats fair
its like saying ehh if someone rly wants to hack you theyll hack you so mcafee is fine
lmao
imo, i dont care that my ISP logs that I go to websites that literally everyone else goes to
copyright trolls or whatever
they cant ask companies to hand stuff over
they can ask you to hand stuff over
not that i use a vpn for that, it's just a common reason why people use vpn services
the only reason id use a vpn is region blocks or maybe public wifi or something. if you are doing something bad enough for a government to acknowledge it, chances are they will find you eventually, whether they could arrest you may depend on where you actually live, international law, etc
yeah, if an entire government cared enough, you're obviously doing more than just accessing publicly available data on the internet
you would get nailed by them in one of the many other ways you are being tracked
if youre doing something bad enough to need the FBI to get involved youre boned either way
but
its nice to tell people to use good things
its why i think it doesnt really matter if one is based in the us or something, ye the government can request info but they won't unless you are found to have been doing something really bad to look into
Anyone familiar with TWRP for Android?
I am on both ends on this argument. Why not try and be protected as possible but also, dont do stupid shite.
Ill look into mullvad and torrent movies and pdf books. I am kidding, im kidding. Thanks though guys.
sure thing! you can look into what works best for you
dont be dumb but if someone else decides to be dumb at least you have a smaller chance of getting boned

Hi
maybe useful to some people
Oh wow, when did we get this channel? Or did I just miss it?
the os and software chat was split into 3 few weeks ago
alias sudo to please to teach your kids manners and a useful operating system
anyone know how to boot up kali from a USB.
if you cant figure out how to make a bootable usb kali might not be for you lol
i'd learn fundamentals first
I should try a dual boot with Elementary on this laptop
dont know if this laptop supports dual boots actually
any device supports dual boot
I want to connect my old pc to my tv to just web browse and stream which linux os is suitable for this?
ubuntu
thank you

terrified of someone who wants to use the hacker os but cant make a boot usb
its why i advised they start small
Ya but Their life
lol tru
but jumping into the deep end of the pool when u dont know how to swim is a bad idea
id rather they play in a puddle first
Thats the good advice
What are the pros and cons of linux? Like say pop os and ubuntu
privacy, customization, free open source software, less resource heavy, lighter overall OS
cons, stuff with DRM wont run (adobe, office, games)
i havent used pop or ubuntu so i cant speak about those
but i have used arch lol
All of the above. It's very easy to download an .iso file for a distro, burn it to a usb, and liveboot to try it out yourself. I haven't used windows since XP iirc, but for Windows 10 I've been told you have to jump through hoops to uninstall certain software. In a Linux distro you are the ultimate user, updates and software can not be added without you choosing to add them
Linux can either hold your hand or force you to understand how your system works, based on the distro. Mint, Fedora, and a few other beginner distros require no more knowledge to run than windows, whereas Arch or Gentoo require you to reference a wiki your first time through.
Cons of linux for a casual user are entirely compatibility related, some hardware (e.g. broadcom wireless chips) can be a pain to get working, and many games require a bit of fooling around with to work. In both cases, with a bit of time and reading you can figure it out. A small con is fooling around with drivers depending on your hardware, drivers for NVIDIA hardware especially usually needs to be tinkered with. Another con might be the fanbase, some of us are fanatical in a weird way ("I'd just like to interject for a moment...") and treat Linux more like an ideology than an operating system, but it's honestly no worse than Apple people
Interesting
What about apps like steam
Would it and the games you could download on it be compatible
as long as it works on proton yea
Proton?
Proton is a fork of Wine that Steam developed, it's a compatibility layer
Compatibility layers allow you to run Windows binaries on a Linux system
I think everything Valve made runs fine on Linux without proton/wine/etc, many games do now but not a majority by any means.
If you google ProtonDB they have a site that breaks down the compatibility & performance of most titles
Proton is built into steam afaik, you just have to enable it in settings
thanks alot
Can anyone recommend a tiling window manager ?
Oh i get it now
BSPWM/SXHKD
thats my favorite
but other popular ones are AwesomeWM, and i3
bspwm+sxhkd+polybar is my favorite combo
oh nevermind he left the server 🙁
I ❤️ WInDirStat
this is windirstat for linux heathens
@keen geyser thoughts about me just dumping random tools in these channels?
you think people would like it or nah
You guys pick someone to write the sticky post and keep it updated
Like what I did in #overclocking make it like that, but better
i want to make a nas sticky and a virus removal one
but ehh
ill just dump tools in here
bam
I have been running Pop OS for about 1 year now, downside - can't install office 365 so you have to use web or libra office instead, that being said, everything else runs very smooth, also does well with a lot of games, still some that don't work, but the list is getting smaller 😉
@silent eagle thats fun, now you should nuke it and install arch... its been a year.... this is the way
What's the most lightweight Linux server distro that can run on IDE HDD with dual 512 memory and a single core cpu?
Just file server purposes
for server use, once you remove the desktop environment, there isnt a huge difference to be honest.. If you are just looking for a simple samba server then Debian, or ubuntu server would both be fine
Thanks, I'll try that.
Or Debian, Arch is for hipsters lol
@placid current no man, You switch to Debian after about 6 months of mucking around with Arch and deciding that you want something that "just works"
then after a year of that you drunkenly install OpenSUSE tumbleweed because you can get the best of both worlds right.....
That actually makes a lot of sense. I've gon to Arch before but keep going back to debian lol. Never tried openSUSE though whats that all about
rpm based rolling release, easy to install and configure like other mainline distros, but rolling release for new software
but it has other problems for sure,
Sounds interestingg may have to check it out. Assume there are mult versions? you have fav?
well there is "leap" which is stable version much like any other distro, and "tumbleweed" which is rolling like arch
only one installer, you just pick the Desktop environment on install
but it seems to be a distro that leans more heavily on KDE than Gnome
Hmm I havent had good luck w KDE on my crappy laptop.
i feel like im getting forced into linux
lol Just Do It!
Is it good to switch to Linux if I don’t understand coding at all? I took a coding class actually and failed it
Should be fine you can do most things through GUI now and if you need to use terminal it is pretty easy to find the commands you need in the support forum for your distro or through a goodle search
Alright
I might try it out
Though one of the games I like playing I heard has bad support for Linux...
sadly if you want to play all your games, you still kind of have to keep a windows partition around for the games that dont work
Yeah I was thinking of doing duel boot but I haven’t figured out how to do that yet
ya thats probably best I don't really game on Linux but they are getting better
Alright
Well I’m doing it just need to find my USB which I will tomorrow
deb
So I did 20.04 LTS does anyone else have issues with installing Steam and discord directly from their websites? I know for sure I was downloading the Linux version as when I installed it was a .deb file
I was able to get Steam working with a different method but haven’t tried getting discord yet through other methods
The error I’m getting is file not supported
sudo snap install discord --classic
ez
Alright thanks
or you can wget it
wget is a pog command
i love mass pasting URLs into my ssh terminals and just downloading files right to ma linux servers
hell yea
wget -O ~/discord.deb "https://discordapp.com/api/download?platform=linux&format=deb"
ls ~/discord.deb
sudo gdebi ~/discord.deb
that should work if snap doesnt
Alright thanks
So I installed it and now I’m stuck in a preparing automatic repair loop...
Any idea how to fix it?
This is the screen btw
Figured out it’s Windows causing the issue
I'm surprised you don't daily debian or arch
Windows is my favorite distro
Wsl2 literally makes running native linux as your daily kind of stupid
me since 2013
terminal is ❤️
❤️
how much is linux and what is linux
free
and
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
Copypasta
So I told my mom about what I did with Linux the other day and she responded with telling me that I should’ve never even tried because Linux is old XD
Xd
I guess that means no Windows and no Mac either
Too old
Only chromeos allowed
Lol
Yeah apparently Linux is too old but Windows isn’t
Windows is also actually older XD
@zinc harness You should tell your mom, "Well you're older than Linux, so what's your point, Mom?"
Lol
Anyone figured out how to get Uplay to run after installing with wine?
I'd like to learn linux, I think it is very interesting! Best of all, some of the OS's are opensourced, so woohoo.
deb cuter
It all comes down to taste. How you want the interface to look, how customizable it is, etc
I liked Ubuntu till I tried to install it and screwed up...
Ubuntu is for servers, install Arch, it's much easier
If you'd really like to learn, don't believe the memes that Arch & Gentoo are hard. Best way to learn is either of those.
Jannies really need to pin the popular copypastas
There’s 2 different versions of Ubuntu though I did the one fro regular PCs
For desktop? There was at least 3 last I checked. Gnome, Kubuntu, and Lubuntu.
Hmm... Ok they split off k/lubuntu to its own branch
Lol actually laughed
for first distro arch is uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh fun
previous command line experience is highly recommended
arch was the first distro that i spent more than 10 minutes in lol
with ubuntu i would just install it go "huh thats cool" and never touch it again
arch kept me engaged for way longer

tbh idk what linux is good for servers
i was thinking centos... but thats gone now lol
Not really out of the question, but not designed for servers and would need a lot of tweaks
my friends run
@brave isle How did you first learn Arch Linux? Did you use YouTube? I do have commandline experience but for a certian extent on Windows.
download VirtualBox and try installing Arch there, it's a good safe environment
VirtualBox is weird about UEFI installs but theres a workaround
I hopped from Fedora ~29 or so, to Ubuntu, Mint, Manjaro, and then found Arch and never changed again. I used a tutorial to get the base install, then initially used someone elses configs for DWM (Luke Smith & Distrotube both have configs available). The way I learned was breaking things until they worked. If you can read the wiki, you're entirely capable of using Arch, though the wiki will not spoonfeed you. You need to think.
I honestly hate to be a living meme, but the other distros I used were too bloated. I have under 700 packages currently, and pulseaudio has never touched this machine.
Hardest thing about using Arch is choosing a WM/DE. The install is ~20 minutes. Distrotube made an ok tutorial, Chris Titus Tech made one as well recently, but both are more "here's how to press enter and type 127.0.0.1" than fleshed out guides as to why you're doing what you're doing.
Have never been happier with a distro, and will likely never change unless someone convinces me systemd actually is the devil it's made out to be
Someone told me xorg was outdated and insecure and I need to switch to Wayland
Wayland has literally been in beta for 12 years
I laughed
so i was downloading Pop_OS onto a old laptop as one does and i guess it currupted and it does not work is there a way i can clear storage without a os?
I was wondering if anyone knows a fix for this!? i just recently decided to dual boot and am now running ubuntu 20.04 lts along side windows 10. well windows 10 there is nothing wrong with it. However when i go to shut down from linux it hangs and ends up taking like 10 minutes to shut down. If anyone has experienced this or knows a fix it would be much appreciated!
You can boot a gparted live disk from either USB or the CD drive if it's too old to USB boot
Try updating your kernel, maybe?
It really depends on what it hangs at. Do you have text on the screen as it shuts down? If so, what does it get stuck on?
Reason: Duplicated text
@late mason This is one of my favorite tools:
https://www.system-rescue.org/
Ok
SystemRescueCD includes GParted, so it can do a lot more things. If you simply want to wipe the drive and start over, GParted is sufficient for that. It can also be installed to a CD or USB.
Yeah i want to wipe the drive
Can you wipe encrypted data?
Like a screwed up install of windows
Hmmm... good question. I've never looked into that.
I will tell you if it works
But if this does not work do i have to get it remagnatized
The hard drive
Hdd
I don't understand what you mean by "remagnatized" but a quick bit of googling suggests that it should be possible to format an encrypted partition. So, read up on it until someone else can definitively say it's possible. 🙂
do any of y'all know how to use curl/jq or reddit's api in general
theres probably a doc page somewhere
100% of publicly available apis have one
Reddit gives you the best of the internet in one place. Get a constantly updating feed of breaking news, fun stories, pics, memes, and videos just for you. Passionate about something niche? tada
yes i know that exists but i have no idea how to use it
a friend said to use curl and jq to access it and use jq to parse the json but i have no idea how to use it which is why i asked
welp i havent touched apis in like a year now, and when i did i used python
