It'll wipe your boot drive when installing

#

Not sure if you need to unplug it physically

#

But you need to get into the boot menu on the computer

urban atlas
#

alright and change the boot to the usb

tight eagle
#

Yeah

urban atlas
#

sand pecan
#

Do you need the formatting features

#

Just use Obsidian if you just need to take notes

urban atlas
#

wym formatting features? like using bold text etc?

sand pecan
#

No

#

FOSS has some quirks

#

When it comes to formatting

urban atlas
#

Oh

sand pecan
#

But if you don't need them

#

You don't need them

urban atlas
#

Yea don’t need them then, I do need Linux though, I only use Microsoft word to jott down notes

sand pecan
#

You can use literally any text editor for that

#

I'd recommend obsidian since it has built in markdown

Do I skip the validating?

Wish I could find documentation on what BE validation means fully

Depends on what you want, I guess you don't have to wipe windows, but I'm not sure if there might be issues as a result of doing that because windows

tight eagle
# urban atlas

I think formatting it using the flash utility should work

#

I have to use Rufus again to reformat my flash drive iirc

#

I just choose the non-bootable option so it becomes a regular volume I can turn back into a file mover, or if I need it for another bootable media like clonezilla, I flash its ISO into it

urban atlas
tight eagle
#

Whichever one you use to flash ISOs

urban atlas
#

it wont let me using disk frag

tight eagle
#

Although I guess you need one that's in Linux instead

#

What do those volume names say

urban atlas
#

thats all it says

#

i just wanna clear the usb stick for i can put my files back on it

tight eagle
#

If you mouse over the volume label

#

BE is available on Linux looks like

#

Though idk if it has the same function Rufus does for just formatting

urban atlas
#

i cajn use rufus if that makes ut easer, so do i just download Rufus on the usb>?

#

but i dont need a os on the usb stick i just want it to be a normal usb stick agian

#

ohh i got u

#

do i do portable or standard

tight eagle
#

Whichever, are you in a windows vm?

urban atlas
#

nah im just on my pc xd

tight eagle
#

in Ubuntu?

urban atlas
#

nah the ubuntu is on my laptopl im on my gaming computer

#

want me to plug the usb in my laptop with ubunut

tight eagle
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

If you want to try formatting the drive with Rufus, gotta do that on windows

urban atlas
#

did this

tight eagle
#

Are you able to delete the two volumes on the right in disk mgmt?

#

And then expand the leftmost one

#

That way it becomes a single volume, one drive

urban atlas
#

these 2?

tight eagle
#

Ahh the one in the middle isn't removable in disk mgmt?

urban atlas
#

correct

tight eagle
#

Yeah I'd format it in Rufus lol

#

Gets rid of pesky volumes that you don't need anymore

urban atlas
#

alright how do i use my windows pc to do that? just download rufus?

tight eagle
#

Yeah download and open

urban atlas
#

alright

#

done

tight eagle
#

Make sure to select the right device, non bootable, and you can use the defaults for everything else

urban atlas
#

bet then click starT?

tight eagle
#

Partition scheme MBR vs GPT, MBR is the older scheme that's compatible with old systems, GPT is the new scheme that should be better, but you can probably leave it default too

#

Yeah, start, then it has two confirmations

urban atlas
#

done

tight eagle
#

Now you have a regular flash drive again

urban atlas
#

do i delete this out of the usb drive

tight eagle
#

Oh Rufus uses those to create a drive that displays its name and icon, but I don't think it's needed honestly

#

It probably displays a name and icon just fine

#

Without the autorun and icon file being placed in the drive

urban atlas
#

oh alright

tight eagle
#

Reasoning behind it, windows doesn't allow alphabets from other languages in the drive name normally I think, so Rufus added a feature that forces it to allow you to name it something Russian or Japanese or whatever

Do games run better on Linux or? @fast mango

fast mango

You can run photoshop but it depends on the version and whatever tweaks if necessary

#

Affinity works better on here though

#

And for games it also depends

#

The nvidia dx12 issue is still not fixed, so you will get a perf hit with dx12

#

Some games are a little faster, some are a little slower

#

Warframe runs the same compared to windows, deep rock galactic and minecraft are faster

#

Minecraft is an exception though, with the last time I benchmarked there was like a 30% increase on my world

#

Oh helldivers is also faster than other games

#

red dead 2 goes from parity with windows to like 2% faster

#

Typically though you will see parity with windows, or up to +/-7%. When you average the games tested, it would be the same or slightly faster than windows

Ray tracing also hits harder on linux which brings down the average

I rescued another usable box from the recycling pile at work (specs below) and decided to use it to test distros. At the moment I've installed 3 varieties of Fedora (KDE, Gnome, "Jam") and it occurred to me that /boot and /boot/efi could get confusing and have issues. Does anyone have any tips for managing GRUB and the boot folder when multiple Linux distros are installed?

So, I’m heavily considering migrating to a Linux OS. Mainly with the way things have been going in the digital space, I’m opting for some more autonomy. I still plan on gaming quite a bit including some media editing (video and audio). Any advice and a step in the right direction will be helpful.

-User on another social channel is looking for advice

mortal totem
#

you have to be somewhat well versed in computers and have to be willing to learn another software and how to troubleshoot it. there are many distros that make switching from windows for gaming and general use very doable but finding the right one may require some trial and error. bazzite is a popular option that is designed to work out of the box and is relatively straight forward to use. But for users that are a little more advanced and want more fine grain control the easy of use can make it frustrating to tune or install specific tools which is where many have been choosing to go with a distro like cachyos

#

I still wouldn't use daily if you rely on something like adobe software but there are other alternatives to editing software, like davinci for video editing.

fast mango
#

Issue with bazzite is that when you use it like a computer, the immutable feature will start getting in your way

#

If you do only gaming and nothing else, then ok fine

#

But if you want to use it as a computer over a long period of time, you’ll be trying to install things or change things the immutable os won’t like

I have 3 "spins" of Fedora installed (Gnome, KDE, Jam) and was going to install a couple of flavors of Ubuntu. But, Ubuntu wants to use the first EFI partition on the drive (I have several), which isn't possible because Fedora is using that one. So rather than starting over... no Ubuntu... and no Mint. Pop OS requires a 1GB /boot/efi so that's not gonna work because the existing EFI partitions are 200MB, which should be plenty.

fast mango

dusk kernel

Ah ha.... it's the "LMDE" version.

fast mango
dusk kernel
#

The LMDE installer has a couple of quirks also, but allowed selection of the partitions I needed.

  1. it assigned /boot/efi to ALL the EFI partitions. I just had to change all but the one I wanted and it was OK.
  2. It was telling me that the EFI partition didn't have the correct boot flag, but when I looked at it via Gparted, the flag was set. The installer actually meant "you must format the EFI partition to VFAT"... even though it already was.
#

Cool... LMDE gets added to the distro buffet. 😀

dusk kernel
#

Sooooo... I have installed the following, and still have partitions for 3 more:
= Fedora (KDE)
= Fedora (Gnome)
= Fedora (XFCE)
= Fedora Jam
= Kali
= LMDE
= MX
= Pop OS (I added another ESP partition to make Pop OS happy)

Next I need to polish rEFInd a bit. It's working but I want to change some of the icons etc.

I guess I should at least mention the objective just in case any one cares. LOL I want to install an app (Firestorm viewer for Second Life) on a variety of versions of Linux so I can make some notes on what packages are required to get the app running, then share that info with others who use the app. Plus, I'm just generally curious about how to setup a system with multiple distros installed.

If your kernel was built between 2017 and the patch — which covers essentially every mainstream Linux distribution — you're in scope.

Copy Fail requires only an unprivileged local user account — no network access, no kernel debugging features, no pre-installed primitives. The kernel crypto API (AF_ALG) ships enabled in essentially every mainstream distro's default config, so the entire 2017 → patch window is in play out of the box.
(to be more clear, this isn't an issue that affects personal devices, just multiuser devices for public use or for users that are not meant to obtain administrative permissions)

NixOS is strange. 😀 I was copy/pasting some lines into fstab just like I have for years and the changes kept disappearing. Then I did some poking around online (which I should have done before installation, LOL) and figured out that fstab is auto-generated by the main config file.

I left my screwdriver kit at my weekend repair shop place so I'll be going over there later this morning to take out the nvme drive and see if that can shock it into updating the boot options list...

maiden pine
# maiden pine

ok so this is """resolved""", as in, it's too technical for me to solve.
When the NVMe is installed in the laptop, all boot options except the operating system (Qubes OS) don't work. Bazzite USB key was identifying itself as "Fedora" since it's Fedora-based but remained visible even when unplugged.
I suspect something was just adding all boot options it could see to itself but not mapping their locations properly(?)
Back when it ran Windows 10 it had no problem booting off USB drives so this is definitely a bug caused by Grub or Qubes.
When I take the NVMe out it can boot the Bazzite live iso no problem.

I'm going to keep Qubes on it for now because I only use this laptop for playing with distros and Qubes is incredibly unique. (I think I can put the NVMe in another computer and either wipe it or install a different OS onto it if I wanted.)

VPN for linux? I need more security when searching through tor.

mortal totem
#

maybe you can take a look at something like mullvad, expressvpn, torguard

wanton snow
wanton snow
mortal totem
#

i dont really mind one being us based, general rule of thumb you should use is, if its connected to the internet its not safe no matter what you do.

wanton snow
#

it also does absolutely nothing making it worth a recommendation

#

costs same as mullvad too

#

also

#

their TOS binds user to dmca

#

mullvad literally does not care at all

#

if its in the us it can be ordered to give up user info

mortal totem
#

from what ive seen its a vpn and it does what a vpn does. not many security breaches known that they haven't acknowledged, main thing people don't like about it is that its us based. but you should be fine without a vpn unless you are doing phishy stuff which you shouldn't do anyway.

#

and these are people we are talking about I wouldn't be surprised if every country gave up info like that

wanton snow
#

such examples of this exact thing happening are: riseup being forced to lie abt no log and give logs to FBI, IPvanish doing the same thing, and Lavabit giving encryption keys to US gov

#

it is irresponsible to recommend a product designed to hide oneself online that is based in one of the biggest surveillance states

#

express and mullvad are the only providers I would consider

mortal totem
#

im just saying everything on the internet is monitored no matter where you are. you shouldnt trust any no log policy, and if you don't do anything phishy you should be fine.

wanton snow
#

idgaf if switzerland knows my browsing history

#

would prefer for the US to not know it though

mortal totem
#

chances are they could find out if they wanted to. which come to the point that using no vpn, proxy or such might be best in cases, trying to find a needle in a haystack

wanton snow
#

nah because using no vpn just means your isp knows everything you do

#

which is linked to your home address

undone lichen
#

dont do bad things ez

wanton snow
#

which is then linked to your SSN

#

i dont do bad things tbh

#

but

undone lichen
#

then they dont care

why not recommend the best product?

undone lichen

#

imo, i dont care that my ISP logs that I go to websites that literally everyone else goes to

wanton snow
#

copyright trolls or whatever

#

they cant ask companies to hand stuff over

#

they can ask you to hand stuff over

#

not that i use a vpn for that, it's just a common reason why people use vpn services

mortal totem
#

the only reason id use a vpn is region blocks or maybe public wifi or something. if you are doing something bad enough for a government to acknowledge it, chances are they will find you eventually, whether they could arrest you may depend on where you actually live, international law, etc

undone lichen
#

yeah, if an entire government cared enough, you're obviously doing more than just accessing publicly available data on the internet

#

you would get nailed by them in one of the many other ways you are being tracked

wanton snow
#

but

#

its nice to tell people to use good things

mortal totem
#

its why i think it doesnt really matter if one is based in the us or something, ye the government can request info but they won't unless you are found to have been doing something really bad to look into

i havent used pop or ubuntu so i cant speak about those

brave isle
# silent eagle What are the pros and cons of linux? Like say pop os and ubuntu

All of the above. It's very easy to download an .iso file for a distro, burn it to a usb, and liveboot to try it out yourself. I haven't used windows since XP iirc, but for Windows 10 I've been told you have to jump through hoops to uninstall certain software. In a Linux distro you are the ultimate user, updates and software can not be added without you choosing to add them

#

Linux can either hold your hand or force you to understand how your system works, based on the distro. Mint, Fedora, and a few other beginner distros require no more knowledge to run than windows, whereas Arch or Gentoo require you to reference a wiki your first time through.

#

Cons of linux for a casual user are entirely compatibility related, some hardware (e.g. broadcom wireless chips) can be a pain to get working, and many games require a bit of fooling around with to work. In both cases, with a bit of time and reading you can figure it out. A small con is fooling around with drivers depending on your hardware, drivers for NVIDIA hardware especially usually needs to be tinkered with. Another con might be the fanbase, some of us are fanatical in a weird way ("I'd just like to interject for a moment...") and treat Linux more like an ideology than an operating system, but it's honestly no worse than Apple people

silent eagle
#

Interesting

#

What about apps like steam

#

Would it and the games you could download on it be compatible

wanton snow
#

as long as it works on proton yea

silent eagle
#

Proton?

brave isle
#

Proton is a fork of Wine that Steam developed, it's a compatibility layer

#

Compatibility layers allow you to run Windows binaries on a Linux system

#

I think everything Valve made runs fine on Linux without proton/wine/etc, many games do now but not a majority by any means.

#

If you google ProtonDB they have a site that breaks down the compatibility & performance of most titles

#

Proton is built into steam afaik, you just have to enable it in settings

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

So I told my mom about what I did with Linux the other day and she responded with telling me that I should’ve never even tried because Linux is old XD

Xd

#

I guess that means no Windows and no Mac either

#

Too old

#

Only chromeos allowed

zinc harness

Lol

#

Yeah apparently Linux is too old but Windows isn’t

#

Windows is also actually older XD

@zinc harness You should tell your mom, "Well you're older than Linux, so what's your point, Mom?"

Anyone figured out how to get Uplay to run after installing with wine?

I'd like to learn linux, I think it is very interesting! Best of all, some of the OS's are opensourced, so woohoo.

Ubuntu is for servers, install Arch, it's much easier

There’s 2 different versions of Ubuntu though I did the one fro regular PCs

For desktop? There was at least 3 last I checked. Gnome, Kubuntu, and Lubuntu.

with ubuntu i would just install it go "huh thats cool" and never touch it again

arch kept me engaged for way longer

Not really out of the question, but not designed for servers and would need a lot of tweaks

@brave isle How did you first learn Arch Linux? Did you use YouTube? I do have commandline experience but for a certian extent on Windows.

download VirtualBox and try installing Arch there, it's a good safe environment

VirtualBox is weird about UEFI installs but theres a workaround

# brave isle <@456226577798135808> How did you first learn Arch Linux? Did you use YouTube? I...

I hopped from Fedora ~29 or so, to Ubuntu, Mint, Manjaro, and then found Arch and never changed again. I used a tutorial to get the base install, then initially used someone elses configs for DWM (Luke Smith & Distrotube both have configs available). The way I learned was breaking things until they worked. If you can read the wiki, you're entirely capable of using Arch, though the wiki will not spoonfeed you. You need to think.

#

I honestly hate to be a living meme, but the other distros I used were too bloated. I have under 700 packages currently, and pulseaudio has never touched this machine.

#

Hardest thing about using Arch is choosing a WM/DE. The install is ~20 minutes. Distrotube made an ok tutorial, Chris Titus Tech made one as well recently, but both are more "here's how to press enter and type 127.0.0.1" than fleshed out guides as to why you're doing what you're doing.

#

Have never been happier with a distro, and will likely never change unless someone convinces me systemd actually is the devil it's made out to be

I was wondering if anyone knows a fix for this!? i just recently decided to dual boot and am now running ubuntu 20.04 lts along side windows 10. well windows 10 there is nothing wrong with it. However when i go to shut down from linux it hangs and ends up taking like 10 minutes to shut down. If anyone has experienced this or knows a fix it would be much appreciated!

Ok

SystemRescueCD includes GParted, so it can do a lot more things. If you simply want to wipe the drive and start over, GParted is sufficient for that. It can also be installed to a CD or USB.

Yeah i want to wipe the drive

Can you wipe encrypted data?

I will tell you if it works

But if this does not work do i have to get it remagnatized

I don't understand what you mean by "remagnatized" but a quick bit of googling suggests that it should be possible to format an encrypted partition. So, read up on it until someone else can definitively say it's possible. 🙂
