alright here's the ELI5

there are two types of overclocking for AMD cpu

manual and PBO

PBO tells the CPU "hey do your smart self-management like usual but boost to higher limits"

Pretty sure psycho pulled like 1.65v through a 3900x under ln2 for benching for like a month and it lived but degraded to bell

you can additionally take away some extra voltage and see if it's still stable which will reward you with lower temps and sometimes higher boost

manual is when you remove the protection and tell the CPU exactly how to run itself at one specific clock speed and voltage

this can cause the cpu to degrade (require more voltage for the same clocks or get lower clocks at same voltage)

commonly it has been said that pushing higher voltages for a few minutes for benchmarks is okay

and some benchmarks do benefit from having a manual overclock

mine apparently was not okay with a few minutes and is now degraded

if you just stick to PBO (which is better for gamers anyways) and don't manually set the boost scalar, you don't need to worry about degradation

How boosting normally works is basically working off a voltage/frequency table, and PBO kind of nudges it around inside that table, and taking some of the limits off

The table might say 4ghz at 1.2v, and 4.2ghz at 1.25v, and PBO can try to do 4.2ghz at 1.2v
