toshiba tlc too

red jay
#

Not bad.

#

4.4 gb.

#

getting up there.

#

with sabrent rocket (non plus).

untold grove
#

for 180 not bad

#

oh lol

#

rocket 4 dropped in price

#

170 now

red jay
#

Damn.

#

Nice

#

I got mine for 150 a while a back.

#

and then they released the plus lmfao

untold grove
#

yeah i have my rocket uhhh

red jay
#

I wonder if I should raid 0 the rockets

untold grove
#

sitting somewhere idk

red jay
#

Floppa called me rich kekw

untold grove
#

i bought it

#

and then i forgot

#

i have no gen4 stuff

red jay
untold grove
#

so its just kinda sitting on a shelf

red jay
#

not that rich

clear lichen
#

and gen3?

untold grove
#

cheaper

clear lichen
#

any recommendations?

untold grove
lean quest
#

@untold grove preferred software for switching OS drive? not windows

#

or do I just need to reinstall cuz that might be easier tbh

untold grove
#

dd

lean quest
#

too many acrynoyms idk what that means

#

ahh it's a command

#

lul

#

now I just need to figure out how to actually get to the terminal instead of gui for xcpng lol

blazing musk
#

It's an acronym too though, lovingly referred to as "disk destroyer", be careful with your commands lol

lean quest
#

hahahaha

untold grove
#

dong destroyer

blazing musk
#

don't mix up your if= and of=

untold grove
#

fr tho be careful

#

easy way to kill ur data

red jay
#

lmfao

#

I made a tier list with threadripper and 18 seagate drivers

blazing musk
#

dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda
Boom no data

red jay
#

Barracuda yikes

blazing musk
#

Oooohh, Barracuda
(Deep bass solo plays)

red jay
#

What could go wrong

#

lmao

blazing musk
#

Raid 0 right kekw

red jay
#

Yep

#

Gotta double chance of drive failure

lean quest
#

LMAO

#

only double?

red jay
#

maybe 100% more with more drives

#

only know how raid 0 works normally

#

not with 500 drives

#

lol

blazing musk
#

Put them all into one RAID volume and exponentially increase your odds of failure

red jay
#

I should raid 0 my gen 4 drives

#

lmao

#

5000 mb/s for each

#

thats 10,000 mb/s

#

lul

blazing musk
#

No error checking/correction in raid 0, one drive fails your entire array is F-d

red jay
#

Lmfao

#

"revolvers pressed against both temples, but this guy likes to obviously party"

#

lmfao

lean quest
#

RAID 0

BOOT DRIVE

olive wadi
#

reject pcie gen 4

red jay
#

Im not that rich

#

I only have two gen4 drives

#

been debating about getting one of those expansion cards

#

for x16

#

and buying 4 gen3

amber matrix
#

cheap or gen 4, pick one

lean quest
#

what cpu even supports v4 right now

blazing musk
#

AMD 5000 series

amber matrix
#

ryzen 3000+

lean quest
#

ahh ok

red jay
#

I really should buy some sabrent rocket plus*

#

now 5000 mb/s is slow kekw Lul

#

since they upped it with 7,000

amber matrix
#

my corsair mp600 got the drip

red jay
#

gotta have speedssssssssss.

#

Imagine using Sata

#

Just use two m.2's

blazing musk
#

I do sata raid for my game drive

red jay
#

...

#

Seagate?

#

It better be seagate

#

or Hitachi death stars

blazing musk
#

I load fallout 4 in 3 seconds flat
No Western Digital Blue SSD

red jay
#

lmfao

#

i would use drives

#

but my 3.5 inch sata cables flexed my case panel

blazing musk
#

You need a better case then

#

I like my meshify C, it has an SSD tray that fits behind the motherboard

red jay
#

The PSU cables and sata were too thicc

#

they bent it

#

cause the 3.5 inch had the cables on the edge of the case.

untold grove
#

thiccies

red jay
#

like in between the panel hinge and the panel

lean quest
#

my new drive I just bought is doa I think

#

😦

#

best way to confirm?

torpid adder
#

Plug into other computer mayb

lean quest
#

yea did that

#

server and comp dont show

#

ebay hasn't been good to me 😦

torpid adder
#

Bought on eBay?

lean quest
#

yea

#

rip

torpid adder
#

Is it used/refurb?

lean quest
#

yea

torpid adder
#

Oof

#

Not a great idea

blazing musk
#

If it's dead and they didn't say "for parts/not working" condition you can complain and get your money back

lean quest
#

or just return it

torpid adder
#

Yuh

blazing musk
#

If they accept returns sure

lean quest
#

oop wait no

#

server just doesn't see it

#

😦

untold grove
#

some ssds like

#

dont work with some servers/backplanes

#

its why i only use samsung ssds/hynix/intel

#

check if intel 320 works on r710

#

r720*

#

and if it works on h710

lean quest
#

yep looks good

#

I picked this one because my last one didn't work remember 😦

untold grove
#

run hd sentinel on it maybe

lean quest
#

trying firmware update first maybe that's it

#

then I'll look into that

untold grove
#

also just try to stuff it into the bay

#

no orico thing

lean quest
#

that... sounds like a terrible idea

untold grove
#

nah

#

i ran ssds like that all the time

lean quest
#

I did that and the sounds it made scarred me

untold grove
#

its really not hard

lean quest
#

like before I bought caddys

untold grove
#

just line up with sata port

#

then u can put caddy in for it to rest on :))

lean quest
#

lmao

untold grove
#

im not kidding

#

see if its the orico thing

lean quest
#

hmm ok leme c

olive wadi
#

@untold grove got a 3rd warrantyless exos 😳

lean quest
#

@untold grove yea directly plugging 320 worked

#

gotta return my orico

#

and get a new one?

#

or not even bother

#

idk

untold grove
#

maybe get one of the drive bays that just doesnt actually adapt the drive

#

and just moves the drive

lean quest
#

uhh interesting

#

so like a bay that fits 2.5 or 3.5?

untold grove
lean quest
#

any downside to just keeping it as it is? I'm not planning on hotswapping the OS drive so seems like it's $5 I don't need to spend rn

#

maybe once I need other things off ebay I'll buy it with them haha

placid bane
#

Which one is better Wester Digital 2 tb 5400 rpm or Seagate 2 rpm 7200 rpm

dusk turtle
#

I'd take the WD

#

See a lot of failures with the Seagate

#

If it's the green barracude

blazing musk
#

WD all day for HDD, the rpm won't matter if you're just using it as storage

mortal hazel
#

Is the Crucial P5 a decent drive? or would a WD sn750 be a better drive to be getting

minor sun
#

Sn750 better

#

Iirc p5 might've had overheating issues

red jay
#

what's a good nvme option for pcie 4?

#

I favor giga goodies but I find quality control extremely lacking

red jay
#

yeh, but it works well

mild sluice
#

I’m rocking a 980 pro seems to work well enough. Not too familiar with others but πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

untold grove
untold grove
#

but a rocket 4.0/4.0 plus is the best drive you can get rn

vital jay
#

hi

untold grove
#

helo

olive wadi
olive wadi
olive wadi
#

slumping the regular rocket 4.0 and the rocket 4.0 plus together is an epic meme

untold grove
#

cheap + not as cheap

minor sun
#

@olive wadi rocket q4 makes sense as a pcie 4.0 drive >:P

#

mass fast storage

olive wadi
olive wadi
#

it'll slow to a snails pace once the slc cache is full

minor sun
#

dats why storage

tender phoenix
#

recommended fast 2tb nvme pcie 4 ssd please

minor sun
#

@tender phoenix take off the pcie 4.0 requirement, and Pilot-E

untold grove
#

rocket 4 plus if you wanna be stupid and use pcie 4

minor sun
#

:P

untold grove
#

pilot e/mp34 if you wanna unstupid yourself

minor sun
#

mp34 no 2tb

#

sadly

tender phoenix
#

why not pcie 4 please explain

minor sun
#

Nothing really can take use of it

#

random perf is like the same between pcie 4.0 and 3.0

tender phoenix
#

πŸ‘

#

so overall the best 2tb is...?

#

3.0

minor sun
#

Best price to performance is definitely Pilot E

tender phoenix
#

wow only $200

minor sun
#

It offers practically the same performance as the usual 250$ 2tb SSDs like Rocket

tender phoenix
#

but pcmag review score is 7 out of 10

#

3.5 of 5

minor sun
tender phoenix
#

samsung speed is 6000mb mushkin is 3500mb

minor sun
#

And keep in mind, sx8200 pro kinda changed controller and nand 3 times already, it performs like crap now

#

@tender phoenix seq don't really matter, that's why PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 3.0 drives make no practical difference

untold grove
tender phoenix
#

samsung advertised 7gb real 6gb from user reports

minor sun
#

Here's the thing

upper quiver
#

you could use a sata ssd at 540mbs and you would hardly notice

minor sun
#

@tender phoenix seq can look great, but what matters is random perf for responsiveness and all

#

all seq is good for is transferring like 50GB files around

untold grove
#

also thats probs the cringiest discord username ive seen in a while keeeek

upper quiver
#

oof

minor sun
#

eh

untold grove
#

but yeah the only reason why sata is bad is because nvme is literally same price

upper quiver
#

^

tender phoenix
#

😐

#

3.5gb is very slow

minor sun
#

lol what

upper quiver
#

3.5gb isnt a speed

#

its a capacity

minor sun
#

3.5GB/s ain't bad at all

tender phoenix
#

samsung is 6

upper quiver
#

its too fast

red jay
#

Xbox series x expansion card is seagate

#

lmaoaoaooaaoao

minor sun
#

Lemme just

red jay
#

too new to be worth it at that price

#

only for editing rigs

upper quiver
#

@tender phoenix you need some context. imagine you have legs that allowed you to run 200 miles per hour. you want legs that can allow you to run 400 miles per hour.
you live your life in a 10ft by 10ft concrete box.

minor sun
#

Also, rnd perf

#

for example, look at the random perf for a 980 pro via cdm

upper quiver
#

see how useless really fast legs would be?

red jay
#

really fast legs means easy exercise

upper quiver
#

but you are confined to a 10x10 foot box

tender phoenix
#

😐

#

your kidding right

untold grove
red jay
#

but exercise!!

upper quiver
untold grove
#

some ppl just big stupid

#

is better to give up on them

upper quiver
#

i would tell him to get a sata ssd if nvme wasnt literally the same price

untold grove
#

@tender phoenix youve already made up your mind so just get the samsung

#

ez

minor sun
#

lol

untold grove
#

we done here

red jay

this is a massacre

Couldn't notice a difference, they sometimes even thought Gen 4 was worse than SATA in responsiveness

#

uh

#

look at the capacity lmao

untold grove
#

tfw the best ssd on that list literally does not exist anymore

minor sun
#

@tender phoenix remember, bigger capacity means more dram and cache, aka better performance

tender phoenix

yes i know

tender phoenix

but why they do this?

what

guys does mushkin load games fast

dusk turtle

Any NVME will load fast

yea lmao

we wouldn't recommend it if it's not good in general

@dusk turtle well, maybe not some bargain bin stuff

untold grove

even those

dusk turtle

I mean, it's really writes where things start to matter

I mean bargain bin by like

Load times between NVME and SSD hardly change

what's that one brand called, fattydove?

worse nvme on the market might just

Bruh is a samsung evo 860 500 GB value around $50? This guy offered me that amount. The ssd is new and unopened

blazing musk
#

Yeah that's not a bad bargain

olive wadi

You can get brand new nvme drives in that price range

blazing musk

Samsung usually charges more for the name, it's not bad for a samsung drive

That mp34 lili always ummm

Yes

nimble robin

I’d go for the Sabrent one I linked, but an MP34 you can’t go wrong with either

If i can only find sabrents here in the local shop maybe

I'm trying to buy as much on one store lol

I have learned to not question the methods of lili

minor sun

There's a simple formula, if lili brings up sammy drives, respond with MP34, Pilot E, helix L, or SN850 >:D

untold grove
#

Rated best drive for the rpi as a boot drive

#

So I don't doubt it'd be good considering you can use a usb drive as a main is drive

#

Looks good but random is what you'd expect from a usb

#

Best usb is still the sandisk extreme pro 3.2

#

But it's also like 2x as much

north locust
#

hello. i just bought a 8t hdd from new egg from seagate(barracuda). i plugged everything in and it keeps making a weird noise and wont let me partition it help i literally just opened out of the box!!!

return it

nimble robin

Seagate bad

untold grove

buy wd next time

nimble robin

Get a WD Blue or 2 X300s or something

Or even WD Black

or 1 x300

since it comes in 8tb

lol

nimble robin

Even better

#

But actually tho, where exactly does the problem occur?

@north locust dont buy seagate

north locust

like i plugged it in and it made a weird on off noise

north locust

okay thank you

it was just on sale so i figured it was good

no

nothing from seagate is good

north locust

since i have a seagate 2t already

untold grove

that drive is also trash tier

blazing musk

Seagate has the worst failure rates out of all of them right now

right now and like

since sata hdds became a thing

always been seagate as the worst

Mhmm

What about their ironwolfs?

Still as bad as barracuda?

untold grove

not as good as wd nas drives

but not unusable

How about the FirePro SSDs

And I’m not asking if they are good

I know they aren’t

Just relative

just price is bad

hard to make bad ssds

just bad value

Had a "please back up your hard drive a failure is imminent" message come up with 2 different NVME drives. Both brand new and both Critical P2s. Could it be the m.2 slot causing the issue

@iron jacinth what gave you the message? Sounds very suspicious

If you're concerned, try using HD sentinel and see if that tells you anything

dusk turtle

Windows will do that

HD Sentinel or CrystalDisk yes

Yes

minor sun

Windows tells you something like that? What does windows base it off of?

dusk turtle

@dusk turtle you think windows can read smart data?

maybe

and yeah crystal is trash

minor sun
#

@dusk turtle I was talking about that part for firmware, anyways, @untold grove I was asking if windows can act upon it

untold grove
#

windows can be like

#

replace drive

#

so can your bios actually!

#

most bios will actually halt system boot if SMART health falls below a threshhold

minor sun
#

oh really?

#

interesting

untold grove
#

yep

vital kindle
#

I need help with something and it may require me to call someone

nimble robin
#

What do you need

valid idol
#

I need help

minor sun
#

With?

valid idol
#

Are PCIe M.2 SSD's better than regular SSD

grim glade
#

PCIe SSD > SATA SSD

minor sun
#

Well, it depends a lot more on the specific situation, general rundown:

Statistically much faster, practically tiny bit faster, but usually, PCIe m.2 drives are about the same price as SATA drives, so might as well grab a faster drive.

#

There are cases where SATA drives are just much cheaper, it'll make more sense for 99% of the people to go for SATA drives at that point

valid idol
#

Kind of looking at it being a cleaner look to a build but don't want to give up on performance if i don't have to.

#

And trying to determine if my MB supports NVMe. Can't find anything on gigabyte website.

minor sun
#

@valid idol what board?

valid idol
#

Gigabyte Z490 Vision D

minor sun
#

This basically means NVMe

#

M.2 NVMe drives use the PCIe protocol instead of SATA

upper quiver
#

nooo NVMe is the protocol

minor sun
#

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

#

words are hard

upper quiver
#

ik its so confusing

minor sun
#

interface?

#

is that the word

#

forgot word

upper quiver
#

pcie interface

minor sun
#

there it is

upper quiver
#

sata interface

minor sun
#

there we go

#

PCIe interface instead of SATA

valid idol
#

Nice thank you. So wouldn't the NVMe be faster than SATA?

minor sun
#

NVMe is much faster than SATA on paper, and in large file transfers, but in day-to-day operation, the difference is small

valid idol
#

Well i Plan on having multiple SSD in my build in the future but would like to have my OS on the M.2

untold grove
#

just get a nvme drive

placid bane
#

Is 500gb on nvme ssd and a 2tb hard drive good enough for a sizable steam library?

grim glade
#

yea

minor sun
#

what

#

happened

upper quiver
#

well, my phones discord notification is telling me that windshield was yelling "DATABUS" at me

#

and yeah he's right, sata is a databus

#

but I guess he's not in this server anymore

minor sun
#

Hm

mint valley
#

So I have a 970 evo 2tb for my pc build. Mainly to have my games set and good to go. What would be a decent hhd or ssd (on the cheaper side) to use for back ups while I'm not playing.

In essence not looking to mirror my 2tb, but have a passive backup/extra files.

minor sun
mint valley
#

I was thinking that. I dont want to affect the performance of the main ssd due to me gaming.

minor sun
#

Well, it shouldn't affect performance at all when it's just a separate disk and you're not trying to raid 1 it or something.

red jay
#

how good is hp ex920?

#

it looks pretty good on paper

#

but idk i need someone to ye at my confirmation bias

nimble robin
#

How much are you paying for it

red jay
#

how do i change sata mode without having to reinstall windows?

#

i heard you might have to renstall windows

red jay
nimble robin
#

What size

red jay
#

1tb

nimble robin
#

You can do better

red jay
#

what price should i look for then

nimble robin
#

Lemme see what I can do

dusk turtle
red jay
#

like ahci or ide

dusk turtle
#

OH. That will need an OS reinstall, yes

red jay
#

is there a way to avoid it?

dusk turtle
#

What OS?

#

If Windows 10, possibly

#

Other OS's, mebbe not

nimble robin
#

Hey vintage, that SSD I linked is alright, right?

#

The mushkin one?

dusk turtle
#

I think so

red jay
dusk turtle
red jay
#

windows 10

dusk turtle
red jay
#

ok thanks ill look

dusk turtle
#

I can't guarantee it but it should work

red jay
#

btw will it still work if im trying to change from ahci to the intel optane sata mode

dusk turtle
#

I don't think so because that requires UEFI

nimble robin
#

His name is darkrai like the PokΓ©mon but he has captain Levi as his PFP

dusk turtle
#

You've installed using legacy boot

#

That will definitely break things

red jay
#

uhh so what do i do

dusk turtle
#

If you want to use Optane, that's going to require a full OS reinstall because the partition needs to be changed from MBR to GPT

keen lantern
#

Quick question, I have 4x 2tb SAS drives setup in RAID-5. I'm only able to use 2tb/5.5tb. Not totally sure why I'm unable to partition the last 3.5tb of 'unpartitioned' storage.

dusk turtle
#

I have no experience in RAID, I'm sorry. 😦

#

@kind sierra maybe?

keen lantern
#

I'll wait for lili then

#

Or them whoever

nimble robin
#

@untold grove

#

She was talking about this yesterday

keen lantern
#

She's always talking servers, I'll look back to see if I can find what she said yesterday

nimble robin
#

Around 1:30 to 2:30 central time

keen lantern
#

Gotcha I'll look aroud

untold grove
kind sierra
#

Ping?

#

@keen lantern you say raid 5?

keen lantern
#

Correct

untold grove
#

does ur controller support over 2tb

kind sierra
#

What did you use to set it up?

keen lantern
#

While booting up the server you hit F8 or whatever it was to setup whatever raid config. It shows up as a 5.5tb drive just the last 3.5tb is unable to be partitioned out

kind sierra
#

What type of file system are you using?

untold grove
#

what raid controller

#

is the first thing

#

inb4 h310

keen lantern
#

P420 1GB Cache, it's an HP DL380E

keen lantern
kind sierra
#

Ext4, ZFS, XFS, Fat32, NTFS, etc

keen lantern
#

NTFS

kind sierra
#

What OS?

keen lantern
#

'winver' command

kind sierra
keen lantern
#

Yea Linux was having issues so... windows it was

kind sierra
#

Can you verify that it's using ntfs and not fat32?

untold grove
#

hp doesnt say outright but it looks like it supports 4tb drives

keen lantern
#

They are 4x 2tb drives

keen lantern
untold grove
#

yeah if it supports 4tb then it supports 2tb lol

#

cant expand partition?

#

also booting off the array

keen lantern
#

I have a 2.5" SSD that I use for boot, copied the OS onto the array to see if that was the issue

#

Clearly it wasnt

kind sierra
#

Do you have the evaluation version of windows server?

untold grove
#

yes they do

kind sierra
#

What's the maximum storage size on that?

keen lantern
#

Didn't think of that one, but yes it's the evaluation version

untold grove
#

same as prod

kind sierra
#

Wait, I think I might have the issue

#

What type of partition table are you using?

keen lantern
#

Not totally sure

untold grove
#

what are u even using the server for lol

kind sierra
#

It will probably be either MBR or GPT

untold grove
#

running baremetal is omega cringe anyways

kind sierra
#

Given that it's being used as a boot drive, it's probably going to be MBR

#

If so, convert it to GPT

untold grove
#

^^^

keen lantern
#

It's usually not the boot drive so unless it changed to MBR.

kind sierra
#

Did it complain about tables when you made it the boot drive?

keen lantern
#

If it did it complained quietly, nothing popped up or anything

kind sierra
#

So almost definitely MBR

keen lantern
#

Ok so to change it it seems like I have to get rid of all of the data correct?

untold grove
#

use esxi

#

baremetal STOOPID

kind sierra
#

Depending on which way you convert you can keep the data

#

Data gets to stay

nimble robin
#

hey bob, where is your PFP from?

kind sierra
#

It's an old dead guy

#

His name is John

untold grove
#

pog

keen lantern
#

Well there you go confirmed that it's MBR

#

So yea I'll go about changing that now

kind sierra
#

There ya go, that explains the 2TB limit

keen lantern
#

Makes sense, well this is something I would not have easily found out

untold grove
#

also fr why win server smh

kind sierra
#

lili, don't you use winserver?

keen lantern
#

Idk Linux was having some different issues, I have Linux running on VMs

blissful night
#

Windows Server is great

kind sierra
#

No, it's not

#

Windows server is expensive af

keen lantern
#

I'll agree it isn't I would have rathered a Linux Server. I'll most likley get a dual-boot setup so I can have both.

kind sierra
#

uhhhhh

#

why are you rebooting the server that much?

blissful night
#

Why would you even use Windows Server in the first place lmao

#

why do you want a dual boot server

#

Linux is way more universial

kind sierra
#

I am very confused right now

blissful night
#

I was being sarcastic lmao

keen lantern
#

I feel like I'm confusing myself

blissful night
#

Windows Server is ass

untold grove
blissful night
#

I only used it since it was already on a drive for a temp server

lean quest
#

ok looking for some help here, after messing with my boot settings and virtual drives I can't see my raid card in IDRAC anymore. Before I could get to it from the devices menu but now the only evidence I have of it existing is the fact that I get the configuration menu at startup. I tried re-seating it but idk what else to try to get my drives back 😦

untold grove
#

long story

kind sierra
#

Good news is now that you've found the issue, you can just go pure Linux

untold grove
#

no

red jay
#

Linux Pog

#

less overhead

untold grove
#

pure vmware

keen lantern
#

Linux was having a good amount of issues that I'll get to solving, wanted to make sure I got into the system and everything was working as intended. I got the server 6 hours ago so haven't had much time to tinker

blissful night
#

Proxmox ❀️

red jay

Damn I got beaned

untold grove

runs baremetal = idiot

lean quest

kind sierra
untold grove
kind sierra
#

Bare metal Linux is fine

untold grove
#

waste of a server

kind sierra
#

No

blissful night
#

lmao

untold grove
#

in a homelab?

#

yea

kind sierra
#

It depends on what you're using the server for

untold grove
red jay
#

LInux for

#

Video editing kekw

kind sierra
#

If you want a powerful server, chances are you'll be using baremetal

untold grove
#

if you want a powerful server chances are you just properly allocate cores

#

and literally lose like 1-2%

#

instead of being a moron and making it so your server can only do one thing

kind sierra
#

No, you'll just use baremetal

#

Sure, if you only have one server and don't have funding for more than virtualization makes sense

small steppeBOT
#
BobLaserShark#4124 has been warned

Reason: Duplicated text

untold grove
#

KEK

#

sorry bob

kind sierra
#

Thank you wegg bot

red jay
#

I accidently posted the egg discord server link bruh

untold grove
#

if you really need that 1-2% of perf then yea go for it

kind sierra
#

Trying again:
For example if you need a compute server and can afford it, you install a bare metal compute server and don't use it for anything else

red jay
#

but didn't get warned by the bot?

kind sierra
#

It's stupid to run other stuff on a compute machine

untold grove
#

i think there is no homelab running everything baremetal

#

and im talking abt homelab use

kind sierra
#

Yeah, homelab falls under the "doesn't have enough funding for servers" category

blissful night
#

Not always

untold grove
#

homelab is more "its dumb to have over an amount of servers because youre just one person"

upper quiver
#

just use MaaS, best of both baremetal and virtualization DukePogU

kind sierra
#

They're also probably going to be just dabbling, so you'll want flexibility in what your servers are doing

untold grove
#

its also why the r710 was still popular

#

cause most people dont even need insane power anyways

kind sierra
#

For actual server deployments, bare metal makes perfect sense

untold grove
#

yeah but im talking in context of homelab

#

not enterprise keeeek

#

and running your lab baremetal is stupid

kind sierra
#

Sure, if you have multiple things you want to do

untold grove
#

id just say in general

kind sierra
#

Eh

#

Again, depends on the application

untold grove
#

imo if you have x amount of cpu power you dont wanna waste it and maybe only use it for burst

kind sierra
#

For example, if I have a pi hole in my home lab, I'm not setting up virtualization on that

untold grove
#

my pihole is virtualized

blissful night
#

Mine used to be

untold grove
#

because im not dum and dont spend like $80 on a stupid sbc

kind sierra
#

If I have a small cluster in my homelab, it'll be baremetal

kind sierra
untold grove
#

older models can choke easily tho

#

and 35 vs free on a vm that performs better than even the best pi

kind sierra
#

3 or newer will be fine unless you're pumping huge amounts of traffic

untold grove
#

paying $35 for "fine" vs getting "best" for free in a vm

kind sierra
#

Even then, you could lessen the load by setting up DNS caching

untold grove
#

and yeah my traffic fatt

kind sierra
#

A VM isn't "free"

upper quiver
#

:bean:

untold grove
#

free in the sense of

#

i doubt youre using every single core in your homelab

kind sierra
#

So you give a core, some ram, and some time on your NIC for a vm

#

That's not free

untold grove
#

my pihole runs on my nas

#

which has 6x 10gbe ports

#

and 4 1gbps ports

#

it just gets a spare port and 1 core and 1gb ram

#

and it handles me saturating gigabit literally 24/7

kind sierra
#

What amount of DNS caching do you use?

untold grove
#

again, not like youre maxing your nics/ram/cores all the time

kind sierra
#

In a small home lab, you could

#

Most people don't have a multi thousand dollar NAS

untold grove
#

my nas was like $600

#

minus drives

kind sierra
#

You got it at a discount, no?

untold grove
#

no

#

i just built it myself

#

actually it was more like 350

kind sierra
#

Doubt

untold grove
#

supermicro network appliance board = 150

#

cpu = 50

kind sierra
#

What CPU?

untold grove
#

case = 60

#

idk some e3 quad core

#

its old

kind sierra
#

How much did you pay for the NICs?

untold grove
#

theyre on the board

kind sierra
#

You got a board with 10 gigabit+ ports for 150?

untold grove
#

yes

kind sierra
#

At full MSRP?

untold grove
#

ebay baby bean

#

i bought like 20 of them once i saw the listing

kind sierra
#

So you did get it at a discount

untold grove
#

no i just pay msrp for 2014 hardware

kind sierra
#

Is your four core CPU able to handle that much bandwidth?

red jay
#

wait so is there no cat 7?

#

so there is cat6a i think

blissful night
#

There is

kind sierra
#

There is cat7, it's just not really useful in consumer space

red jay

Uhh

You can actually buy that board in a barebones server for pretty cheap

untold grove

Which max at 4c8t

#

Which is what I have

blissful night

I think I got a E3-1220 v2 somewhere

untold grove

um
