sitting somewhere idk
Floppa called me rich
so its just kinda sitting on a shelf
not that rich
and gen3?
cheaper
any recommendations?
@untold grove preferred software for switching OS drive? not windows
or do I just need to reinstall cuz that might be easier tbh
dd
too many acrynoyms idk what that means
ahh it's a command
lul
now I just need to figure out how to actually get to the terminal instead of gui for xcpng lol
It's an acronym too though, lovingly referred to as "disk destroyer", be careful with your commands lol
hahahaha
dong destroyer
don't mix up your if= and of=
dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda
Boom no data
Barracuda yikes
Oooohh, Barracuda
(Deep bass solo plays)
Raid 0 right
maybe 100% more with more drives
only know how raid 0 works normally
not with 500 drives
lol
Put them all into one RAID volume and exponentially increase your odds of failure
No error checking/correction in raid 0, one drive fails your entire array is F-d
Lmfao
"revolvers pressed against both temples, but this guy likes to obviously party"

lmfao
reject pcie gen 4
Im not that rich
I only have two gen4 drives
been debating about getting one of those expansion cards
for x16
and buying 4 gen3

cheap or gen 4, pick one
what cpu even supports v4 right now
AMD 5000 series
ryzen 3000+
ahh ok
gen4
I really should buy some sabrent rocket plus*
now 5000 mb/s is slow
Lul
since they upped it with 7,000
my corsair mp600 got the drip
I do sata raid for my game drive
I load fallout 4 in 3 seconds flat
No Western Digital Blue SSD
You need a better case then
I like my meshify C, it has an SSD tray that fits behind the motherboard
My ssd tray was behind it lol
The PSU cables and sata were too thicc
they bent it
cause the 3.5 inch had the cables on the edge of the case.
thiccies
like in between the panel hinge and the panel
Plug into other computer mayb
Bought on eBay?
Is it used/refurb?
yea
If it's dead and they didn't say "for parts/not working" condition you can complain and get your money back
or just return it
Yuh
If they accept returns sure
ok so maybe I messed up
and this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LZWX6PD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and my computer can see it but my H710 in my server can't
light doesn't light up
some ssds like
dont work with some servers/backplanes
its why i only use samsung ssds/hynix/intel
check if intel 320 works on r710
r720*
and if it works on h710
run hd sentinel on it maybe
that... sounds like a terrible idea
I did that and the sounds it made scarred me
its really not hard
like before I bought caddys
lmao
hmm ok leme c
@untold grove got a 3rd warrantyless exos π³
@untold grove yea directly plugging 320 worked
gotta return my orico
and get a new one?
or not even bother
idk
maybe get one of the drive bays that just doesnt actually adapt the drive
and just moves the drive
any downside to just keeping it as it is? I'm not planning on hotswapping the OS drive so seems like it's $5 I don't need to spend rn
maybe once I need other things off ebay I'll buy it with them haha
Which one is better Wester Digital 2 tb 5400 rpm or Seagate 2 rpm 7200 rpm
I'd take the WD
See a lot of failures with the Seagate
If it's the green barracude
WD all day for HDD, the rpm won't matter if you're just using it as storage
Ty
Is the Crucial P5 a decent drive? or would a WD sn750 be a better drive to be getting
what's a good nvme option for pcie 4?
I favor giga goodies but I find quality control extremely lacking
Iβm rocking a 980 pro seems to work well enough. Not too familiar with others but π€·ββοΈ
p5 HOTT
gen4 is actually stupid
but a rocket 4.0/4.0 plus is the best drive you can get rn
hi
helo
crucial p5 is on par with sm2262en drives but runs mega hot
none of them, it's a niche i can't think of a real use case for
what
slumping the regular rocket 4.0 and the rocket 4.0 plus together is an epic meme
cheap + not as cheap
regular rocket 4 is a cringe phison e16 drive
no it doesnt
it'll slow to a snails pace once the slc cache is full
dats why storage
recommended fast 2tb nvme pcie 4 ssd please
@tender phoenix take off the pcie 4.0 requirement, and Pilot-E
rocket 4 plus if you wanna be stupid and use pcie 4
:P
pilot e/mp34 if you wanna unstupid yourself
why not pcie 4 please explain
Nothing really can take use of it
random perf is like the same between pcie 4.0 and 3.0
Best price to performance is definitely Pilot E
wow only $200
It offers practically the same performance as the usual 250$ 2tb SSDs like Rocket
dunno about pcmag, I like tom's hardware
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/mushkin-pilot-e-m.2-nvme-ssd,6345-3.html
samsung speed is 6000mb mushkin is 3500mb
And keep in mind, sx8200 pro kinda changed controller and nand 3 times already, it performs like crap now
@tender phoenix seq don't really matter, that's why PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 3.0 drives make no practical difference
and real world you will literally never notice
samsung advertised 7gb real 6gb from user reports
Here's the thing
you could use a sata ssd at 540mbs and you would hardly notice
@tender phoenix seq can look great, but what matters is random perf for responsiveness and all
all seq is good for is transferring like 50GB files around
also thats probs the cringiest discord username ive seen in a while
oof
eh
but yeah the only reason why sata is bad is because nvme is literally same price
^
lol what
3.5GB/s ain't bad at all
samsung is 6
its too fast
Lemme just
u mean overpriced gen 4 garbage
too new to be worth it at that price
only for editing rigs
@tender phoenix you need some context. imagine you have legs that allowed you to run 200 miles per hour. you want legs that can allow you to run 400 miles per hour.
you live your life in a 10ft by 10ft concrete box.
see how useless really fast legs would be?
bad analogy pftttt
really fast legs means easy exercise

but you are confined to a 10x10 foot box

i would tell him to get a sata ssd if nvme wasnt literally the same price
lol
NO WITNESSES
but what about critics
Welp, @tender phoenix there's always LTT with their meh blind test thing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DKLA7w9eeA
Find a Micro Center near you: https://rebrand.ly/s9j16ct

Use code LINUS and get 25% off GlassWire at https://lmg.gg/glasswire
Does faster storage really make that big of a difference? Could you even tell between a SATA, NVME, and a Ge...
Couldn't notice a difference, they sometimes even thought Gen 4 was worse than SATA in responsiveness
uh
look at the capacity lmao
@tender phoenix remember, bigger capacity means more dram and cache, aka better performance
yes i know
the black?
what
sx8200 pro
adata
nand and controller swapped 3 times now
gaydata
Adata nerfed the 8200 and didn't tell anyone

guys does mushkin load games fast
Any NVME will load fast
yea lmao
we wouldn't recommend it if it's not good in general
@dusk turtle well, maybe not some bargain bin stuff
even those
I mean, it's really writes where things start to matter
I mean bargain bin by like
Load times between NVME and SSD hardly change
what's that one brand called, fattydove?
worse nvme on the market might just
not have a slc cache, qlc nand only
writes is where stuff slows down
or some crap like that
guys what 8tb ex hdd is the best
All the speed marketing crap is just that, crap
For what
easystore
What is the use case
Yea, WD easystore is good
toshiba seagate or wd
WD Easystore is great
i hate consoles only pc
lol
Okay buddy
π
π
xbox is just bad in general
what about gaming mouse
0 good exclusives
no 0 exclusives
they don't have exclusives
They all on PC now
halo and SOT
the only think is okay about halo is story
halo was ass after 360
very boring
halo is ass in general
ok watch it there buddy
i love uncharted
360 halo
now i hate pcmag
Bruh is a samsung evo 860 500 GB value around $50? This guy offered me that amount. The ssd is new and unopened
Yeah that's not a bad bargain
Unremarkable
You can get brand new nvme drives in that price range
Samsung usually charges more for the name, it's not bad for a samsung drive
While they have innovated a good deal, their nand is far from unique/better now
tru
Still running my Evo 850, it only spazzes and fakes corruption every once and a while when being turned out, is gud
Adata XPG SX6000 Pro? 512gb
$79
Wdym it takes time to load?
Earlier, the link took some time to load so i suggested other one
That mp34 lili always ummm
Yes
Iβd go for the Sabrent one I linked, but an MP34 you canβt go wrong with either
If i can only find sabrents here in the local shop maybe
Even the mp34 is hard to find locally lol
I'm trying to buy as much on one store lol
Sabrents are POG
Ok maybe the mp34 then
guys sorry to bother you i want a fast write speed 64gb usb flash drive
Something something sandisk
model please
what about samsung
@grim glade what about Pilot-E
sound like something i won't be able to find locally lol
but thanks for the suggestion tho
appreciate it
Check though
hi sorry to bother you i want a fast write speed 64gb usb flash drive
π€
No, I don't deal with usb drives
for 87 garbage
Looks sketchy but she SERIOUSLY knows what sheβs talking about
I have learned to not question the methods of lili
There's a simple formula, if lili brings up sammy drives, respond with MP34, Pilot E, helix L, or SN850 >:D
Iirc that usb has a ssd controller in it
Rated best drive for the rpi as a boot drive
So I don't doubt it'd be good considering you can use a usb drive as a main is drive

Looks good but random is what you'd expect from a usb
Best usb is still the sandisk extreme pro 3.2
But it's also like 2x as much
hello. i just bought a 8t hdd from new egg from seagate(barracuda). i plugged everything in and it keeps making a weird noise and wont let me partition it help i literally just opened out of the box!!!
Seagate bad
@north locust dont buy seagate
like i plugged it in and it made a weird on off noise
if drive sounds crunchy it is
time
@north locust you went into disk management, right clicked the black part of your drive, and tried to add new simple volume, right?
yes but it wont even show up there
open a return
Crunchy drive
even if you get that drive working its just seagate trash
get your money back and buy what i linked @north locust
avoid seagate as a company from now on
WD and Toshiba are the true OGs
since i have a seagate 2t already
Seagate has the worst failure rates out of all of them right now
It's literally a time bomb on your data
right now and like
since sata hdds became a thing
always been seagate as the worst
How about the FirePro SSDs
And Iβm not asking if they are good
I know they arenβt
Just relative
Thatβs something you consider when talking about SSDs tho
hardware itself good
hello I have the Samsung evo plus 500gb and samsung 980 pro 1tb. If I put the 980 pro as boot drive, will it make it slower. Im going to use it as gaming storage device while the 500gb will be for files, and etc.
Both are extremely fast
The 980 pro is faster than 970 Evo plus tho
You are fine either way
Hey i need help with a suspected bad drive issue
Whatβs the issue

my 3x16tb exos disagree π
good enough ssds π
lili labs spreading misinformation β’οΈ
Lililabs makes buckets of money from its services and knowledge
evil company buy gamezoid labs stock
I will not tolerate this slander
Fact is they have the highest failure rates, across almost all models, but enterprise drives are meh
i cant wait for your drives to pop

ill laugh so hard
inb4 help my drive failed
3 drives too, so can only be raid 5 parity unless it's 3 way raid 1 (which would be the only smart way to use those)
1 more drive and you could do raid 10
raid 5 won't save you from total failure of a drive unless it's magically the parity drive that fails
raid 5 lets u rebuild at least
just slap a new drive in there and ur good to go

i use raid 10 cause im epic
@olive wadi thoughts? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-of-25-Samsung-PM871b-128GB-SSD-SATA-6-0Gb-s-2-5-Internal-SSD/284049893590
I just need a lot of random boot/bench drives
Also I might've accidentally added an extra 0 to a dell caddy ebay offer
haha I know, just haven't pulled the trigger yet
probs paying for that labor
and you two are some of the biggest storage nerds I know
id see if can discount
raid 10 is pro status epic, I dare one of those drives to try to take out the array

p31 gold
wishing harm upon someone elses data
smh
only lili labs would stoop this low
invest in gamezoid labs
lililabs is gonna unironically sue gamezoid labs for slander

hope u have a law team
It's about to meat the law bean
no law team can defeat the fact that gamezoid labs is beyond the reach of any law
talking to law team rn
l
my lawyer has informed me that i cannot sue you over this
Had a "please back up your hard drive a failure is imminent" message come up with 2 different NVME drives. Both brand new and both Critical P2s. Could it be the m.2 slot causing the issue
@iron jacinth what gave you the message? Sounds very suspicious
If you're concerned, try using HD sentinel and see if that tells you anything
Really?
Yes
Windows tells you something like that? What does windows base it off of?
It's a thing
Interesting
Tbh I'm still not sure why CDI misreads the smart data on my laptop ssd
I've seen SMART errors in system logs so yes it can read the common ones
Says it has read/written tens of PBs of data
Nah, last I checked no firmware, and HD sentinel reads it correctly
Weird
It shouldn't matter TBH but I don't know the specifics of reporting differences between the two
@dusk turtle I was talking about that part for firmware, anyways, @untold grove I was asking if windows can act upon it
windows can be like

replace drive
so can your bios actually!
most bios will actually halt system boot if SMART health falls below a threshhold
yep
I need help with something and it may require me to call someone
What do you need
I need help
With?
Are PCIe M.2 SSD's better than regular SSD
PCIe SSD > SATA SSD
Well, it depends a lot more on the specific situation, general rundown:
Statistically much faster, practically tiny bit faster, but usually, PCIe m.2 drives are about the same price as SATA drives, so might as well grab a faster drive.
There are cases where SATA drives are just much cheaper, it'll make more sense for 99% of the people to go for SATA drives at that point
Kind of looking at it being a cleaner look to a build but don't want to give up on performance if i don't have to.
And trying to determine if my MB supports NVMe. Can't find anything on gigabyte website.
@valid idol what board?
Gigabyte Z490 Vision D
nooo NVMe is the protocol
ik its so confusing
pcie interface
there it is
sata interface
Nice thank you. So wouldn't the NVMe be faster than SATA?
NVMe is much faster than SATA on paper, and in large file transfers, but in day-to-day operation, the difference is small
Well i Plan on having multiple SSD in my build in the future but would like to have my OS on the M.2
just get a nvme drive
Is 500gb on nvme ssd and a 2tb hard drive good enough for a sizable steam library?
yea
well, my phones discord notification is telling me that windshield was yelling "DATABUS" at me
and yeah he's right, sata is a databus
but I guess he's not in this server anymore
Hm
So I have a 970 evo 2tb for my pc build. Mainly to have my games set and good to go. What would be a decent hhd or ssd (on the cheaper side) to use for back ups while I'm not playing.
In essence not looking to mirror my 2tb, but have a passive backup/extra files.
@mint valley Well, 2 options to start off with
2tb CMR Blue
https://shop.westerndigital.com/products/internal-drives/wd-blue-desktop-sata-hdd#WD20EZRZ
4tb x300
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013JPKUU2
I was thinking that. I dont want to affect the performance of the main ssd due to me gaming.
Well, it shouldn't affect performance at all when it's just a separate disk and you're not trying to raid 1 it or something.
how good is hp ex920?
it looks pretty good on paper
but idk i need someone to ye at my confirmation bias
How much are you paying for it
how do i change sata mode without having to reinstall windows?
i heard you might have to renstall windows
$108 with deal
What size
1tb
You can do better
what price should i look for then
Lemme see what I can do
What do you mean by Sata mode?
like ahci or ide
OH. That will need an OS reinstall, yes
is there a way to avoid it?
I think so
@red jay
This one
cool cool
What operating system?
windows 10
Something you can try: https://support.thinkcritical.com/kb/articles/switch-windows-10-from-raid-ide-to-ahci
ok thanks ill look
I can't guarantee it but it should work
btw will it still work if im trying to change from ahci to the intel optane sata mode
I don't think so because that requires UEFI
His name is darkrai like the PokΓ©mon but he has captain Levi as his PFP
uhh so what do i do
If you want to use Optane, that's going to require a full OS reinstall because the partition needs to be changed from MBR to GPT
Quick question, I have 4x 2tb SAS drives setup in RAID-5. I'm only able to use 2tb/5.5tb. Not totally sure why I'm unable to partition the last 3.5tb of 'unpartitioned' storage.
She's always talking servers, I'll look back to see if I can find what she said yesterday
Gotcha I'll look aroud

Correct
does ur controller support over 2tb
What did you use to set it up?
While booting up the server you hit F8 or whatever it was to setup whatever raid config. It shows up as a 5.5tb drive just the last 3.5tb is unable to be partitioned out
What type of file system are you using?
P420 1GB Cache, it's an HP DL380E
What exactly do you mean by that?
Ext4, ZFS, XFS, Fat32, NTFS, etc
NTFS
What OS?
'winver' command

Yea Linux was having issues so... windows it was
Can you verify that it's using ntfs and not fat32?
hp doesnt say outright but it looks like it supports 4tb drives
They are 4x 2tb drives
Think this should be enough info
yeah if it supports 4tb then it supports 2tb lol
cant expand partition?
also booting off the array

I have a 2.5" SSD that I use for boot, copied the OS onto the array to see if that was the issue
Clearly it wasnt
Do you have the evaluation version of windows server?
yes they do
What's the maximum storage size on that?
Didn't think of that one, but yes it's the evaluation version
same as prod
Not totally sure
what are u even using the server for lol
It will probably be either MBR or GPT
running baremetal is omega cringe anyways
Given that it's being used as a boot drive, it's probably going to be MBR
If so, convert it to GPT
^^^
It's usually not the boot drive so unless it changed to MBR.
Did it complain about tables when you made it the boot drive?
If it did it complained quietly, nothing popped up or anything
So almost definitely MBR
Ok so to change it it seems like I have to get rid of all of the data correct?
Depending on which way you convert you can keep the data
Data gets to stay
hey bob, where is your PFP from?
pog
There ya go, that explains the 2TB limit
Makes sense, well this is something I would not have easily found out
lili, don't you use winserver?
Idk Linux was having some different issues, I have Linux running on VMs
Windows Server is great
I'll agree it isn't I would have rathered a Linux Server. I'll most likley get a dual-boot setup so I can have both.
Why would you even use Windows Server in the first place lmao
why do you want a dual boot server
Linux is way more universial
I am very confused right now
I was being sarcastic lmao
I feel like I'm confusing myself
Windows Server is ass
for my array yeah
I only used it since it was already on a drive for a temp server
ok looking for some help here, after messing with my boot settings and virtual drives I can't see my raid card in IDRAC anymore. Before I could get to it from the devices menu but now the only evidence I have of it existing is the fact that I get the configuration menu at startup. I tried re-seating it but idk what else to try to get my drives back π¦
long story
Good news is now that you've found the issue, you can just go pure Linux
no
pure vmware
Linux was having a good amount of issues that I'll get to solving, wanted to make sure I got into the system and everything was working as intended. I got the server 6 hours ago so haven't had much time to tinker

Proxmox β€οΈ
Damn I got beaned
runs baremetal = idiot
gets stuck on the "initializing firmware" page if I don't pick another option pre-boot
When you say that, do you mean baremetal windows server or baremetal in general?
actual industry standard software β€οΈ
both
Bare metal Linux is fine
No
lmao
It depends on what you're using the server for

If you want a powerful server, chances are you'll be using baremetal
if you want a powerful server chances are you just properly allocate cores
and literally lose like 1-2%
instead of being a moron and making it so your server can only do one thing

No, you'll just use baremetal
Sure, if you only have one server and don't have funding for more than virtualization makes sense
Reason: Duplicated text
Thank you wegg bot
I accidently posted the egg discord server link bruh
if you really need that 1-2% of perf then yea go for it
Trying again:
For example if you need a compute server and can afford it, you install a bare metal compute server and don't use it for anything else
but didn't get warned by the bot?
It's stupid to run other stuff on a compute machine
i think there is no homelab running everything baremetal
and im talking abt homelab use
Yeah, homelab falls under the "doesn't have enough funding for servers" category
Not always
homelab is more "its dumb to have over an amount of servers because youre just one person"
just use MaaS, best of both baremetal and virtualization
They're also probably going to be just dabbling, so you'll want flexibility in what your servers are doing
its also why the r710 was still popular
cause most people dont even need insane power anyways
For actual server deployments, bare metal makes perfect sense
yeah but im talking in context of homelab
not enterprise
and running your lab baremetal is stupid

Sure, if you have multiple things you want to do
id just say in general
imo if you have x amount of cpu power you dont wanna waste it and maybe only use it for burst
For example, if I have a pi hole in my home lab, I'm not setting up virtualization on that
my pihole is virtualized
Mine used to be
If I have a small cluster in my homelab, it'll be baremetal
35, not 80. Cheaper for older models
older models can choke easily tho
and 35 vs free on a vm that performs better than even the best pi

3 or newer will be fine unless you're pumping huge amounts of traffic
Even then, you could lessen the load by setting up DNS caching
A VM isn't "free"
:bean:
my pihole runs on my nas
which has 6x 10gbe ports
and 4 1gbps ports
it just gets a spare port and 1 core and 1gb ram
and it handles me saturating gigabit literally 24/7
What amount of DNS caching do you use?
again, not like youre maxing your nics/ram/cores all the time
You got it at a discount, no?
Doubt
What CPU?
How much did you pay for the NICs?
You got a board with 10 gigabit+ ports for 150?
At full MSRP?
So you did get it at a discount
Is your four core CPU able to handle that much bandwidth?
There is
There is cat7, it's just not really useful in consumer space
yes
It does exist lmao
Forks lied
and hey look
took me 3 seconds to find one like it

Bruh y r u looking for a server MOBO
Damn that looks like a steel.
ikr
I wonder if i should get some xeons
I'm not convinced it could
for cheap.
u get good deals when u know what youre doing
e5 2560
That's a lot of traffic
why would supermicro make the board if it couldnt handle the traffic?
lol
You can put different CPUs in a board you know
You can actually buy that board in a barebones server for pretty cheap
Unless this board only works with e3 cpus
Which max at 4c8t
Which is what I have

I think I got a E3-1220 v2 somewhere
Spending money on good server hardware that can run vms >>>>> spending on sbc
Hang on, you have hyperthreading on in a nas?
Yeah
um

up to Cat10 exists iirc
It maxes out the 6 10tb drives in it no issue
wut
I'd rather run a few more containers
This nas is basically only for backups and isos
If it was all ssd I might care
Truenas also doesn't rly get too hurt by HT
Depends on the architecture
SHUSH
Bad domain anywaya
You saw nothing
and you bought it
I bought it to make her actually think about what she wants to do on it
big brain
Just tell her to use it like Dread.com
Wait what state is sara in
I need to make sure that weed is legal lol
just don't do it in indiana
Make your domain like dread.com
thats a use for it
WHAT
for gaming obviously
bro momento
ok that time actually wasnt me lmao
it was you then
bet it was sara
i did it a couple of times, but not in pet pics
ISTG

I DONT WANT TO SEE PEOPLE"S BUILDS

just change your name smh
No.
