CCNA go brrr

odd epoch
#

Only if your prospective employer has Cisco equipment though

hollow sleet
#

@red girder have I inspired you to make this channel

hollow sleet
#

Its still plenty of a qualification

odd epoch
#

It still does have some value but when I took it in college CCNA3 was basically entirely dedicated to Cisco exclusive stuff

#

CCNA1 and 2 were more general, 4 was mixed

hollow sleet
#

Isn't the newest iteration different?

odd epoch
#

I have no frame of reference on anything from the 2020s

hollow sleet
#

As far as I can tell most of the sections are just on networking knowledge and practices in general, not just in the Cisco space

odd epoch
#

I only needed to keep up on a few other certs for my job like security+

hollow sleet
#

I considered getting comptia certs but figured I'd be better off skipping them and getting ccna

odd epoch
#

It depends on your career path and where you intend to apply

#

A+ is basically worthless though

#

I passed that without studying at all, same with the basic Microsoft certs to get my MCSE.

#

The MCSE carries a little more weight

hey i could actually learn something here (i didnt pay attention in networking class in highschool)

Maybe we could get you set up with a custom firmware on your router and a personal VPN so you can be on your home network without being on your home network

Something I'm interested in learning more about, basically the "how to make your router work well with games" 101 afaik

red girder
#

I'd like to focus on pinning information useful to the common user, someone with an ISP provided router that wants to learn how to implement more robust security, and keep an eye on their network.

CCNA is specific a cisco certification, but is still useful even if your employer uses something else, like HPE/Aruba, since the concepts carry over

#

It helps a bit more if you have the more specific certification for the equipment you're handling, like the Aruba certified network technician

Anyone know any decent routers that offer a 2.5Gbps Ethernet LAN port at a decent price? Just got 2.3Gbps fiber but the router they gave me doesn’t have a 2.5Gbps LAN port and they don’t have any that support it. I was looking at the ASUS GT-AX6000 because it seems to be one of the only routers at a reasonable price with good reviews and a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port

odd epoch
glass moat
#

unless the fiber is on a removable sfp transceiver, or a separate unit from their provided router, then you wont be able to get wired 2.5g from your fiber connection

thorn jetty

#

In northeast it's a adtran 622v

sacred knoll
#

@thorn jetty @glass moat My ISP is ALLO. They have the fiber line coming in through the wall connected to the ONU (GigaPoint GP1100X) which has a 2.5Gbps LAN port, then a short Ethernet cord to the provided router (GigaSpire BLAST u6.2 GS4227E)

#

So I should be able to get (close to) 2.3Gbps speeds speeds through Ethernet with the new router

glass moat
#

also where's the networking placed? if it's on a side wall of the house, your connection may be very weak

#

my house is fairly large, and i need at least 3 APs to get coverage around the whole property (including outside), but ideally 4 or 5

thorn jetty
#

thats what i was checking

glass moat
#

ah right

#

hmm

thorn jetty
#

couldn't find any info from a quick search

glass moat
#

according to random reddit user, their ont is in bridge mode?

thorn jetty
#

well alot of this info is old

#

so yeah

glass moat
#

yeah, could have changed by now, but idk

#

i mean, you possibly could test by connecting a pc directly to the ont? and see if you get the public ip assigned via dhcp

thorn jetty
#

either way that router is good and just need to make sure to turn off UPNP on asus routers. It bogs the crap out of them

#

my 2gbps install went well with a different fiber company but could never hit 2gbps until that was off

glass moat
#

hmm

#

wouldnt disabling upnp make chromecast not work though

thorn jetty
#

idk

#

i just know thats what i had to do to even get remotely close to workable 2gbps

#

i even have the ax89x

sacred knoll
#

Ya they couldn’t get it into any interior rooms so it’s kind of against the wall on one side of the house. I know coverage will probably suffer a bit. The house is pretty small and it’s not ideal, but even with the ISP provided router I’d call the speeds at least “passable”. Once the new router gets here I’ll mess around with it and figure out the best settings and such, maybe consider adding more access points or running some cables to place it at a more central location

ALLO literally just went live with their coverage in my area a couple weeks ago. It’s $30 cheaper than what I had before for faster speeds and no data cap. Previously had COX gigabit but they capped upload speeds at 100Mbps and also had usage limits

glass moat
thorn jetty
#

wtih asus they sell zenwifi things

#

where you can use the ai mesh with that or buy 2 of the same ones

glass moat
#

well, honestly speaking, you'll still get internet access even at -70dbm, but personally, i prefer to stay above -60dBm

#

what the hell does ai mesh mean lmfao

glass moat
#

a few tools you can buy for like $20

odd epoch
#

A crimper, a roll of cable, and the terminators

glass moat
#

the most expensive part of terminating your own cables is buying the roll

vagrant raft
glass moat
#

and that's just because you're buying in bulk

vagrant raft
#

I recommend a large roll like this one.

glass moat
#

oh yeah a tester is useful to ensure that you have a proper termination

#

saves headaches

odd epoch
#

Yep the roll should be much cheaper per foot

glass moat
#

and you can get those testers for like $30?

thorn jetty
#

monoprice is good

vagrant raft
thorn jetty

i paid 125 5 years ago for cat 5e and still using it

glass moat
#

i forget the price of the cable testers

thorn jetty
#

still not even out lol

glass moat
#

;,ap

#

lmao

thorn jetty
#

funny enough if its a short distance you can use cat 5e for 2.5gbps

#

holy crap cat 8 already?

vagrant raft
#

My own opinion is Cat 6 is the best middle ground cable you can have between Cat 5e & Cat 8.

thorn jetty
#

well at the time when i bought my cable it was nearly double to buy the cat 6

vagrant raft
#

Shielded cable is great too like one shielded with say aluminum inside the cable wrapped around the internal wires reducing interference & helping with signal clarity.

#

And if you can get a cable that's internally split with a divider even better.

#

These cables tend to be very stiff & slightly hard to work with but they are very good cables.

odd epoch
vagrant raft
#

That's why I myself use Cat 6

thorn jetty
#

10gb all around

vagrant raft
#

But I'm only pushing 1.5Gbps

thorn jetty
#

Im pushing 2.3Gbps up and Down

vagrant raft
#

AT&T offers a plan like that, they actually offer 5Gbps up & down

thorn jetty
#

speeds are lower due to being used right now

vagrant raft
#

But I only pay for 1Gbps

#

I have zero use even for 1Gbps

#

Might switch to 500 up & down

odd epoch
#

I wish I could get 500 up

vagrant raft

They just brought fiber to my address

It's so sweet

thorn jetty
odd epoch

That's what they said when they bought my local company kekw 💀

thorn jetty

so far no issues with the fiber install

#

other than the guy terminating the cable too short

#

so i had to mount the onu under my desk instead of where i can see it

My ISP did that so technically I can just change the cable from the wall to the ONT, though the one they provided is long enough

It was shipped and fulfilled by amazon, the package had my name and address on it. There was also another label of some kind with a different address so I don't know what happened

The error was at the fulfillment center then. Some overworked person grabbed the wrong item, probably the labels were stuck together, and someone with really big feet got a free router.

i got a great productivity laptop last year, it is a Lenovo legion 5 pro with an AMD ryzen 7745hx and a 4070. however ive been facing an issue of sh*t wifi because of its realtek 8852CE wifi 6e adapter and have been wanting to upgrade. does anyone know hwo good intel wifi chips work with AMD laptops? i know intel makes the best wifi cards around but dont know about the interoperability between them
i was looking at the Intel Wi-Fi 7 BE200 chip. its wifi 7(i dont need wifi 7 but somehow its cheaper than even the wifi 6/6e cards i can find on amazon like Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211)
the only reason im hesitant to buy is that im not sure if the wifi card will behave well with an AMD cpu, ive heard stories of them being firmware blocked and stuff. im not entirely sure of that hence wanted to be confirm

boreal sparrow
boreal sparrow
#

interesting, ive never seen that issue before, wonder if its just a software thing that might have been fixed by now

#

it is 2 months old tbf

glass moat
#

Or 3?

#

So idk if Intel changed anything since then

#

But wifi 7 is also new enough for consumer devices that it could just be a software bug

gaunt canopy
#

also, should i splurge for the tried and tested old ones or get the new wifi 7 one/

#

cuz the wifi 7 one that i found is like half the price of the wifi 6e AX211

#

less than half

#

im in india so the wifi 7 one is like 4k inr and the 6e one is sm 9k-11k

glass moat
#

Hmm

#

Is it of a reputable source

#

It would make more sense to get the wifi 7 one due to the optimization, so when you upgrade your ap or router to wifi 7, you don't have to change nics

gaunt canopy
# glass moat Is it of a reputable source

idk, this is the general consensus that i can find on the internet for the newer wifi cards including the ones im looking at. its not just this video, so dont look to far into the vid. in general in certain forums and documentation i saw uncertainty of compatibility

glass moat
#

I'm not too sure if the people who are unable to use the chip was caused by user error, driver bugs, or Intel intentionally not supporting amd

gaunt canopy
#

another source

#

this also shares some mixed results

glass moat
#

And Intel and AMD use the same architecture
x86 was an architecture created by Intel
x64 was an architecture created by AMD
Nowadays both AMD and Intel uses x86_64

gaunt canopy
#

its just, im a college student and dont rlly hv money or time to waste on a bad order/a refund so just want to be extra sur

gaunt canopy
#

its just you can have a whitelist for certain chipsets in the microcode of the card itself

#

making it exclusive to a certain brand/chipset within the brand, artificially locking it's compatibility, its happened before just cant remember them off the top of my head, hence just wanted to be totally sure and not buy something that wont work and then have to deal with either troubleshooting or refund processes down the line

#

this is nothing more then a measure twice cut once thing

glass moat
#

Hmm

#

I don't see any official sources saying that it explicitly only supports Intel, but I see a few sources saying that it doesn't work for them

gaunt canopy
#

Precisely

glass moat
#

huh
apparently the ax211 also is intel only

gaunt canopy
#

That lack of certainty is what's driving me crazy. On one side Intel hasn't said if it's specifically compatible with some or all but it should be compatible with all, generally speaking. On the other hand the community is broken btwn ppl who it wrks for and who it doesn't

glass moat
#

it seems like the problem is the communication standard they use, which apparently is "CNVio2" which is an intel tech

gaunt canopy
#

Proprietary Intel tech?

glass moat
#

seems so?

gaunt canopy
#

Is it that m.2 pcie alternative thing?

#

I think I read that stuff too

#

Aight then, any other manufacturers make good wifi cards? xD

#

Cuz I've literally only heard about Intel making good ones

#

Realtek and Qualcomm suck as per what I've heard

#

Dk any other

glass moat
#

there's also mediatek which... might be under realtek? i forget

#

yeah i'm not 100% sure
also it seems like it's only specific skus of intel chips that are locked

#

from what it seems, a chipset for wifi 7 will release that supports both

#

and also apparently the ax210 supports both amd and intel, but not ax211

#

and i see people saying that ax200 works fine for their amd system

#

i really hate how intel has restricted access to their official specifications and such

#

i just made an account and it said i had no access

#

most useless documentation ever lmao

gaunt canopy
#

#

i feel you

neon island

True, the only places that I see cnvi said are forums, but the spec sheet did only say pcie

#

And for ax211, the spec sheet specifically says cnvio2

#

Wifi scary

Use internet snake

gaunt canopy
# autumn nimbus <:Cable:588465144322064404>

as much as i love the internet snake, there r 2 issues

  1. college doesnt really have the infrastructure and doesnt allow for wired connections to out dorm rooms
  2. even if they did, idts they'd allow me to drill a hole through the concrete walls to get an ethernet connection into my room
#

plus, i mean if i use the internet snake, it becomes basically a workstation rather than a heavy as all hell portable computer

#

ive got like a gigabit port on my laptop but i cant rlly use it gvn these issues

glass moat
#

as for the 2nd port, i have no idea what it's for

#

it is connected, but there's no dhcp or such on it

#

so instead of that, i have a router/ap combo that takes the wifi connection, and then i can have a wired connection that way
mainly so that i can actually use a chromecast though

odd epoch
#

Then you can plug your router into it and get more reliable connection

glass moat
#

i have 2 weeks left of being here

#

no point anymore lmao

#

honestly speaking, i havent had any reliability issues with the network caused by my shenanigans

#

my dorm's network infrastructure and/or incoming isp connection gets more downtime than my setup

#

they do have an AP in every suite though

#

except this year the AP is in the other room, and not mine, though last year both mine and my roommate's ports were working fine

#

also right next to those network ports are the hot side of a receptacle

#

so yeah lmao

#

the grey thing you see on the left side of the frame is my ugreen gan charger

odd epoch
#

I've seen people run cat5 through the wall using the power lines as a guide and then they wonder why they get dropped packets

glass moat
#

lmao

#

to be fair, it probably is more convenient

#

though terrible

gaunt canopy
#

Still, gvn my scenario I can't do anything about it. Don't hv access to any rj45 ports anywhere near my room and even if I did, I can't drill through the wall cuz 1. It's not allowed 2. The wall is cement

#

There's no ports inside my room

#

So yeah, what else?

#

Is there any place i can check compatibility

#

Of the be200

glass moat
#

My wall is also cement

#

Also not really, the only sources I've seen are the same ones you've saw

#

Intel's spec page and history of naming their chips makes it seem like it should work fine

#

But some users have complained

#

But then again, only the people that run into issues will complain

#

Nobody's gonna say "that was too easy"

ig i gotta take the risk n chk it for myself

odd epoch
#

There's whole city blocks of those reinforced concrete homes in my city. They're fairly old and it wreaks havoc on Wi-Fi signals. One house I serviced I needed to set up multiple repeaters to get a signal 2 rooms away.

glass moat
#

It's easier to punch a hole through concrete than to get Wi-Fi signals to propagate through concrete

#

I just noticed that there are 2 AP's 6 metres apart from each other lmao

#

General rule of thumb is like 1 ap every 2 rooms for good signal

But of course, it's more complicated than that

#

Damn

#

There's 2 APs in this room I just realized

#

So that mean including the 2 AP's in the hallway

#

There is a 3rd ap in within a 6 meter radius

fiery path
odd epoch
#

A lot of the time that's because someone had an issue in a specific corner of the building with the handheld inventory trackers, so they need to install an AP just to cover that section better

#

Using a warehouse as an example there, even though it doesn't look like one from that hallway

glass moat
#

It's a college
And every computer is wired

#

The only devices that would be used on the wifi would mainly be the student phones

#

Idk who would complain about their phone not having a good enough wifi signal in a hallway

#

And the complainant being valid enough to spend another like $200 (probably only $100 with college contracts) ap

As you may know theres remote desktop connection in windows, so that you can control other pcs on the same network. Would it be possible to connect two pcs together with a normal or cross ethernet cable, configure ips in the nic properties and be able to connect to the other pc?

odd epoch
#

100%. If at least one of the ethernet ports are gigabit or higher you don't need a crossover.

#

I did that on my PC for a while. I used the ethernet ports to connect directly and access my backup server faster and used the wifi for net access.

#

At that point I only had a 100mbps switch, I've upgraded since

noble berry
#

Ok, for some reason, a while ago, i wasn't able to connect two of my pcs together to tranfer files. Both had gigabit ports, but a normal non-cross cable didn't work, maybe I wasn't using the right category...?

#

Could have been cat5

#

Assuming I'll get it to work this time, do I have to connect via remote desktop using the auto assigned ip of the other machine?

odd epoch
#

I recommend 10.0.0.5 and 10.0.0.6 on 255.0.0.0

#

No gateway

noble berry
#

10.0.0.5 & .6 look like some random ips or are they not? Could i use different ones?

karmic wedge
#

They're just normal Class A IP addresses

odd epoch
#

They're a group of addresses that are reserved for local device use, similar to 192.168.X.X

#

You can pick any address you like in the 10.0.0.2-254 range. The top and bottom addresses are reserved.

glass moat
#

your dhcp server is also assigning "random" ips as well
random within a range

#

though fairly often they're assigned sequentially

glass moat
#

Damn I can't believe i forgot the full form of DCF and PCF

#

I was so close as well

#

I forgot what the first letter was but I remembered coordination function

#

So I put digital coordination function and personal coordination function

#

(the correct answer was distributed and point)

odd epoch
#

I would still greatly prefer to build my own since I like to use huge ad blocking tables and that 1GB of RAM is not nearly enough

#

In general that's a cool thing but not anything I would use

glass moat
#

I think it's more for using as an AP, or all in one

#

You can use uhhh... Was it openwsp or smth like that as a "controller" of sorts for the openwrt devices

#

Openwisp

#

I'm not sure if it acts like a controller architecture or distributed architecture

odd epoch
#

Right but I'd rather not have to use a raspberry pi between this router and my modem if I can avoid it. If the router can handle everything that would be ideal. This is not my ideal.

☠️

glass moat
#

oops didnt mean to press enter yet

but distributed networking situations is a bit more ideal for ease of configuration (you dont have to manually configure every AP like in a standalone arch), and dont have to rely on a single controller for access control and other ap features

#

so the load is spread between all the APs, though this doesnt really matter in a home or even small buisness context i guess lmao

odd epoch
#

I guess if the price is right that could make a decent enough mass deployed router

#

I/O is still pretty weak

broken plinth
#

hello I have a question about gigabyte fiber optic and what type of router/modem best fits a 3pc household? I'm not to sure really as I've always rented mine from the isp.

glass moat
#

What's your budget

#

And does your house have multiple floors

#

Are the walls concrete

#

I'm assuming you're going to have gigabit network, and anywhere from 4-30 devices on your network (depending on how "smart" your house is)

#

For example, my house has 3 floors (basement, ground, 2nd floor), and all the walls are made of concrete, and there are around 20 devices on my 3 person household

broken plinth
#

Budget is about 150

#

I have 2 floors top and basement relatively small house

#

I'm just looking for something that's good for the fiber they are installing on Monday I currently use Xfinity and there gigabyte modem

#

Id probably at most maybe 15 devices if I turn on everything I own

#

But normally 2 switches 3pcs and 3 phones

glass moat
#

Your budget limits you to all-in-one units, and it's relatively small, and has multiple floors, so you wouldn't need/want high gain antennas.... Hmm I'll take a look

#

Actually

#

How comfortable are you with running network cables

broken plinth
#

I am very comfortable with running cables

glass moat
#

Through walls?

broken plinth
#

Yeah I can drill

#

But my basement is unfinished so I'll probably just mount them to the top like I did my last one

glass moat
#

I wonder if there are any AP's and Poe routers that fit your budget

broken plinth
#

well I just learned that I got my taxes back so if I was to blow anything on performance I wouldn't mind a modem.

glass moat
#

Hmm ubiquiti is a bit outside your budget

broken plinth
#

hmm?

glass moat
#

Actually way over your budget, their cloud gateways don't have Poe, and they don't include an adapter in the box

broken plinth
#

I'm not sure what any of that is

#

currently I have a about 53 ping I'm looking for something that would take that to near zero it's the whole reason I'm upgrading to fiber

glass moat
#

TP Link omanda eap610 +
Hmmmm
I found a few routers to pair with it but they require a bit more networking knowhow

glass moat
#

Also looking for a simple enough solution that fits your budget is a bit hard so I'm gonna go back to looking for all in one units lol

glass moat
#

Unless your existing switches have poe

#

If you want to expand your network and put an ap outdoors, you could do so with this setup

#

And I've checked and verified that the eap610 is able to run in standalone mode, and you won't need a network controller for it

broken plinth
#

It's running now

#

Apologies for the quality

glass moat
#

This is wired?

broken plinth
#

Yeah it's Ethernet

glass moat
#

Hmm

broken plinth
#

both of my PCs are running Ethernet

glass moat
#

What router are you using

broken plinth
#

It's one I rent from Xfinity

glass moat
#

That is rather low for gigabit fiber tbh

#

Speed

broken plinth
#

It's not gigabyte yet that gets installed Monday

glass moat
#

Ahh

broken plinth
#

This just Xfinity 1gb

#

The fiber company is all west communications if that helps

glass moat
#

What do they provide? Only a fiber ONT?

broken plinth
#

you know I'm not really sure it's being set up by my landlord whom I'm buying the house from but they did already install a box outside I figured I just needed to connect up to it when they are here Monday

glass moat
#

Hmm

#

I would assume that they include a router or something since most people probably don't have their own equipment

broken plinth
#

yeah normally what id expect but I was told by her that I needed my own router

glass moat
#

I would recommend you see how well it works, then consider upgrading afterwards

#

Ohh

#

I'm assuming you're not immediately returning the Xfinity equipment?

#

Though actually yeah you would have to buy one anyways

#

Nvm

broken plinth
#

yeah I am not immediately returning it but I will be soon

#

I have a few days just wished she would've told me sooner

glass moat
# glass moat Or actually, tp link eap610 + TP-Link ER605 V2 + Poe injector will fit your budg...

Alright then, so my recommendations are either this setup, which has the pro of being upgradable in bits and pieces (add coverage outside, add more AP's inside), but the cons are it may be more expensive, and is more complicated to setup

The other option is an all in one router ap combo, which is not upgradable, and is cheaper, though lower quality and might not have the coverage you need, though you can still technically add more AP's to it

#

Also I gotta go back to packing up my stuff, I'll be back in a bit

Thanks for the help

glass moat

Personally not a big fan of flat cables but 30ft of that at that price is about right
Though nobody really needs anything above cat6a , because even that is already pretty future proof

fresh matrix
#

I need it to go halfway around a 30 foot long room. Basicallly going from blue to red

#

Red is farther in reality, iPhone editing is poor with blank screens

odd epoch
# fresh matrix Is this good?

Short answer is no.
Long answer is cat7 is supposed to be a much stiffer cable due to the extra shielding, and flat cables and flexible cables often don't meet the spec. It's likely a cat5/cat5e in disguise.

#

This bend shouldn't be possible with a real cat7

fresh matrix
#

And I’m currently using one of those basic yellow 10ft cables.

odd epoch
#

I have no sense of scale from that drawing so I couldn't tell you how long to go

#

Assuming from the wall to the red line is 30 feet I'd go for 50

#

Cat6 and cat6a are more likely to be real than any cheap cat7 or cat8. Generally those cost a lot more for real ones.

fresh matrix
odd epoch
#

Assuming each line is in opposite corners, 50 ft is probably good

fresh matrix
#

Cheaper?

odd epoch
# fresh matrix Cheaper?

Looks like that should be ok at that length, most of the people with legitimate issues are at 100ft+

How do the antennas usually work on a wifi card (such as ax200)?
Does one single physical antenna both transmit and receive at the same time? Or are they used for receiving only? (Afaik the data that is sent from a card after removing the antennas is almost unaffected).
My ax200 (2.5/5ghz + bt) has only two, and I wanted to figure out how they're used. Is it like one in, the other out, based on the established connection (2.4 or 5ghz)? And I'm assuming the BT part doesn't require any external big antenna since it has low range (maybe it shares one of the antennas)??
This question has been bouncing all over my mind, and I'd really appreciate if someone can explain me all of this

waxen coral
#

Does anyone know why when I opened my computer today it says it isn’t connected to the internet and only can connect to ethernet?

odd epoch
glass moat
#

also wifi generally is simplex

#

only one device transmits at a time

#

since if 2 devices transmit on the same frequency, it could clash and cause the packets to be lost

#

which is why CSMA/CD and CSMA/CA exists

#

(carrier sense multiple access collision detection or collision avoidance)

#

CA is used more in wifi, and CD is used more in wired standards, like ethernet

#

pros and cons for both
CD has lower latency since it doesnt have to listen on the channel for any other transmissions going on at the same time, and it only detects collisions after the fact
CA has a bit higher of a latency since it listens for a little bit to make sure there are no transmissions going on before transmitting to prevent collisions

#

though collisions happen more easily on wireless mediums so that is why CA is used more

#

also while technically there is a tx and rx (transmitter and reciever) antenna, technically speaking, antennas can do both, but most implementations would use omnidirectional antennas for both

#

on a related note, beamforming is pretty cool

#

you can warp the direction of a rf signal by having an array of 2+ antennas with very slightly different phase/amplitude

#

idk how to explain it clearly

#

Explains how a beam is formed by adding delays to antenna elements.

And since we only have 4 of them if i remember right, that is not really great.

I'm speaking multiple grand for one that can handle 10g testing

Oh, that doesn't sound very affordable

glass moat

Cheapest is around 3k it seems

So I'm in my room, on 100mbps internet via 5G wifi. My PC is consistently getting only 30up/100down while my phone (in the same spot as my pc wifi antenna) gets a full 100up/100down. Anyone know what might be going on?

#

if my PC was getting like 30/30 i'd just assume the antenna isn't as good as the one in my phone

turbid canopy
#

Also if it matters, I did get the full download speed in the past

glass moat
#

You could try using iperf to check lan speeds

#

Also usually it's a bit easier for you to have more receiving speed than transmit because the ap is more likely to have more transmit power than the PC's WLAN station nic

#

You might be able to improve your speeds with an antenna that you can put above your desk

#

Things like wood, metal, concrete, and such are all going to attenuate your RF signal strength

#

Glass is more rf transparent but still will slightly attenuate the signal

odd epoch
#

Reinstalling the driver is always an option too, wifi and bluetooth are finicky

glass moat
#

Yeah try reinstalling drivers first then using iperf

#

If neither work, then consider moving the AP or PC antennas to a higher location (which usually has less object in the path)

turbid canopy
turbid canopy
#

which I assume means the hardware is capable of more than 30mbps

glass moat
#

No you want to do iperf between 2 devices

turbid canopy
#

hmm ok

#

can I use one of the public servers on the iperf site? or do i need to install it on like my laptop as well/

odd epoch
#

If you test to a server on the Internet then it'll only show you your Internet speed

#

You want to test to a local device so you can see the optimal LAN speed

turbid canopy
#

ok

odd epoch
#

That can help narrow down where the problem is

turbid canopy
odd epoch
#

Nothing besides the normal setup steps

turbid canopy
#

I did iperf3.exe -c <laptop ip> on my desktop but it wasn't able to connect

odd epoch
#

Is the server running on the laptop

turbid canopy
#

I didn't do anything on the laptop other than install iperf

odd epoch
#

On the laptop you need to run iperf3 -s to start the server

turbid canopy
#

ok, so that says server listening on 5201 now

odd epoch
#

Now try again on the desktop

turbid canopy
#

ok there we go

odd epoch
#

Ok so we know the problem is contained to your local network

#

Was the laptop also connected via wireless or wired

turbid canopy
#

wireless

odd epoch
#

If you can, I'd run the laptop wired

turbid canopy
#

no ethernet port :(

odd epoch
#

Or at least within 5 feet of the router

turbid canopy
#

I mean the laptop is gettin pretty much full speeds on the wifi

#

If it really matters I can grab a different laptop with ethernet

odd epoch
#

Ok that would narrow it down to the desktop itself

#

So now we're back to "reinstall the drivers" if you haven't already

turbid canopy
#

yeah both the laptop and my phone in pretty much the same position as the PC antenna get symmetrical ~100mbps

turbid canopy
odd epoch
#

That driver is quite old. The Intel website is a bit tricky to navigate, let me grab a link

turbid canopy
#

yeah i thought i grabbed a newer one but it didn't seem to install

odd epoch
#

Same driver for 10 and 11

#

Almost a year newer version

#

Also this is the final version since that chipset appears to be EoL

turbid canopy
odd epoch
#

Ok, then next I would uninstall device and run it again

turbid canopy
#

at this point I might just get a new wifi card

odd epoch
#

Did the installer say where it was extracting the files

turbid canopy
#

It doesn't

odd epoch
#

Ok so it likely extracts to the temp folder and then deletes it

#

No install location either?

turbid canopy
#

nope

odd epoch
#

There's no error messages either? It appears to run completely and successfully?

turbid canopy
#

is there a different site i can like grab an actual driver file from?

turbid canopy
odd epoch
#

sigh Intel

#

Hang on I'll extract from the exe

#

WTF INTEL

#

I ran it on my computer (which has no trace of Intel parts) and it also ran successfully lmfao

turbid canopy
#

I might see about cannibalizing an old desktop or laptop for the little m.2 card and swap it

odd epoch
turbid canopy
#

I appreciate it, I'll give it a shot

turbid canopy
#

is there a way to force it to use a certain driver?

#

I have a wifi card i snagged out of a laptop so going to try that now

odd epoch
turbid canopy
#

I think it's an older model (lol) but should still be rated for over 100mbps

#

going to steal borrow a completely different pcie card/antenna from my brother's pc

junior mulch
#

I had this on one pc across the house, I had to test UPnP set to a range of upload speeds in order to tap into the full performance

#

Took me like a day to do, using DSLreports as they have bufferbloat tests

#

Download seemed completely unaffected

#

But idk how applicable it is as it seemed to affect a number of devices on that node of the network, not just the one device specifically

odd epoch
#

You can also try the network repair tools from the script pinned in #windows-ios

if it helps

odd epoch
#

Ok I see the problem

#

Intel decided to include every chipset in one driver package

#

But not update all of them

#

So technically you are on the latest version that officially supports that card

turbid canopy
#

but the package has gotten more updates and hence has a newer date?

odd epoch
#

I can still manually add your device to a different, updated version if you want to do some testing

#

Correct, the overall package has been updated but not the drivers specifically for you

turbid canopy
#

I mean I'll give it a shot. at this point though I dunno if its drivers. Probably something with windows or the router

#

can't find a usb drive though, might have to wait till tomorrow for linux

odd epoch
#

Before we do something drastic like modifying drivers in ways they never wanted to be, I would really want to rule out the OS as a whole first personally. I'll get you the patched file and you can do as you like with it. Again, it should be simple to roll back.

turbid canopy
#

sounds good, I appreciate all the help

odd epoch
#

I based most of it off the newer model, the 9260, which as far as I can see is mostly the same

#

So one of two things happened at Intel:
They didn't want to support the older devices any more even though they could.
They discovered some flaw preventing newer things from working on older devices.

turbid canopy
#

still doesn't seem to be working

#

considerign I used a completely differnt card/chip, I doublt it's drivers

junior mulch

@turbid canopy have you tried looking on the router side yet

junior mulch

turbid canopy
#

there is port forwarding but not my PC, some other device

turbid canopy
#

would it hurt to just remove those?

junior mulch
#

What's it listed there for

#

Like a list for what exactly lol

turbid canopy
#

'UPnP NAT-T List"

#

my Pc is listed a few times with UDP protocol

junior mulch

turbid canopy
#

Not something I was aware of setting up

junior mulch
#

Ye so I'm guessing a custom rule for open nat

#

Perhaps

turbid canopy
#

imma just remove those

#

didn't help, unless i need to restart

junior mulch
#

It might do something

#

Remember what they are tho in case you need them later

turbid canopy
#

here's what i have access to

junior mulch
#

But if you can see anything in there that lets you set an upload speed cap

#

Try setting it, for example, 10mbps under the highest speed you're aware of

turbid canopy
turbid canopy
junior mulch
#

Doesn't need to be 10 later, but you might find it then pulls 90 instead of 30

#

Hmm

#

Can't remember any router of mine that I didn't have this tbh

#

Apart from basic telco ones which always have blah firmware

turbid canopy
#

its a Zyxel C3000Z provided by centurylink

junior mulch
#

So it's probably telco lol

junior mulch
turbid canopy
#

That zyxel doesn't appear to have any functionality for client or bandwidth shaping. That's what you're looking for.

junior mulch
#

💀

turbid canopy
junior mulch
#

Hm

#

Let's try in reverse then

#

Can you set a limit in windows settings

#

Limit it to 90mbps upload there

#

You'll have to set your network as a metered network iirc to set custom bandwidth limits

odd epoch
#

Oh wait I'm blind

junior mulch
#

I'm purely curious that it's a kind of bufferbloat that has the router self throttling

#

Or some specific setting that is causing it specifically to that install

#

You changed card, same result, changed antenna spot, same result, changed network however, full speed

#

It's something in the handshake

turbid canopy
junior mulch
#

You're right

#

I can't see it either wtf

I swear it was there before lol

I might be able to do something in device manager but I think the only options are like 10mbps/50/100/1000

odd epoch
#

No openwrt or dd-wrt support for that router, it was worth checking at least

turbid canopy
#

I guess I could set a download speed limit on Steam and try downloading something lol

junior mulch
#

Windows very helpful

junior mulch
#

Why there's no macro control over this is stunning to me

turbid canopy
#

ethernet only as well

junior mulch
#

Windows can't even make network drivers stable and no basic control

#

I understand the stepping but windows should absolutely have the ability to do more than base 10

odd epoch
# junior mulch

That... is technically a speed limit, I guess. You can also go through device manager and change driver settings there.

junior mulch
#

Mmm

#

What would really clear the air for me here is if a separate windows install worked at full speed or not

turbid canopy
#

my laptop does

junior mulch
#

If it didn't *work, it's absolutely the router

#

If it did, it's something to do with windows or the router's allocated ip rules for that device

turbid canopy
#

good news: I found a flash drive
bad news: it's capacity is 122mb

odd epoch
#

Puppy linux time?

turbid canopy
#

tomorrow I should a modern drive that can hold like mint or something

odd epoch
#

Puppy is modern 😭

#

Ubuntu 24.02 based

turbid canopy
#

modern usb stick, sorry

odd epoch
#

Hmmm actually puppy is 300MB

#

Tiny Core then

turbid canopy
#

anyways it's about time I go to bed. Tomorrow ill run a speedtest on Mint and ping y'all with results

#

Might see about an ethernet cable as well but it's a bit of a hassle, coming up a floor and through a few rooms

junior mulch
#

So much less pain and price lol

turbid canopy
#

I meant just for testing

junior mulch
#

Ah alr

glass moat
#

Might as well run cat6e to every room in the house as well

#

Also to the ceilings of like in each corner of the house so you could mount APs to it

#

And then run cable outside so you could install outdoor APs there as well

#

And then dedicate a room for your networking rack

junior mulch
#

Bruv about to have a wifi system designed to look like a home theatre sound set

glass moat
#

And then add another rack and start a proxmox cluster

junior mulch
#

PROXMOX

glass moat

And then profit

@odd epoch @junior mulch booted Linux on my PC, got full 100mbps on a speed test

or the one you swapped

turbid canopy
#

Back on the original, but the swapped one was having the same issue

glass moat
#

good old windows then

odd epoch
#

Yay reinstalling time

#

Everyone's favorite

turbid canopy
#

can that be done without deleting any of my files?

turbid canopy
#

other option is to reset but keep files

odd epoch
#

Reset keeping files

#

That's a start at least

turbid canopy
odd epoch
#

Windows update causes more problems than I've ever seen it fix, except fixing the problems it caused in the first place

turbid canopy
#

hol up

#

removes apps?

#

pretty sure the time spent redownloading everything isn't worth it in that case tbh

#

if it's just windows store apps that wouldn't be too bad

odd epoch
turbid canopy
#

ok. And i assume it leaves other drives alone; only does stuff to the C drive?

turbid canopy
#

wait it might not even be C drive only

odd epoch
#

"Removed" being used loosely.

#

What it's doing is re-creating the Windows folder and all of the contents, including the registry where installation data is stored.

turbid canopy
odd epoch
#

The files themselves will still be there.

turbid canopy
#

ok

#

does cloud download vs local reinstall matter?

odd epoch
#

Cloud takes longer because it has to download, so if you have a local iso file already you could save the download time

turbid canopy
#

LMAO Razer

#

Mid-windows reset 😂

odd epoch
#

Average Razer moment

turbid canopy
#

Good news: most of my games seem to still be installed, and the internet issue is fixed

#

Bad news: it seems most of my other softwares are uninstalled

#

Have 200+gb more free space on C drive than I did before

odd epoch
#

Silver lining, things will download faster

turbid canopy
#

true, but now i've got a million little things to download

#

I do appreciate all the troubleshooting you helped me through though. I really hate network/internet related stuff

odd epoch
#

Happy to help. I hate networking stuff too, that's why I made that my degree course lol. I passed all the other classes without trying but I had to force myself to practice and study with networking.

#

Gotta improve on your weaknesses to grow.

glass moat
#

Do what nobody wants to do or nobody knows how to do and you'll make bank

odd epoch
#

Adding on to that: Also make sure it's a job that can't be automated by an AI or robot or you might just find that career disappearing. Something physical that requires a degree of skill and knowledge, like computer repair, networking, etc are perfect.

glass moat
#

Another good field to get into is to become a robotic technician/mechanic due to factories using automation more and more, which also means they need more maintenance staff that knows how to work on those $100m machines

#

Automation technician

Automation engineer

turbid canopy
#

I'm working on a mechanical engineering degree. I know a good handful of people who went computer science and are regretting it or starting to get worried about it.

#

Job market is really bad for CS right now

odd epoch
#

Depends on what part of CS because that's an extremely broad field

muted moss
#

CS degree can be applied to almost every industry, and in the tech space, it's very versatile.

#

Biggest factor is specializing in something you want to do. Not just do your code-monkey garbage for the rest of your life. People regret doing this degree because they followed what was seemingly easy and found out the hard way that they are competing with the same people.

#

Everybody wants to do machine learning and AI, not realizing there are so many other areas you can focus in with a CS degree.

feral eagle
#

yeah cs is too broad, but because it can be very lucrative pretty much everyone goes into it not knowing what they actually want to do and will struggle to find a job because of that

muted moss
#

Witnessing this as we speak.

#

Job market is tragic

So I'm finishing my basement and I ran a bunch of ethernet cables already to areas that will need. But I was wondering, should I bring thr router from the upstairs down stairs or bring 1 ethernet to a hub in the basement?

odd epoch
#

One cord to a switch is probably simplest

half eagle
#

So keep router upstairs and run 1 wire to switch? Didn't know if the traffic from all the devices would matter off a switch

odd epoch
#

Generally your WAN speed is going to be slower than your LAN speed anyway

#

Unless you've got some crazy fiber optic 2Gbps connection

#

Also, how likely is it that every device on the switch will be downloading at the same time?

#

Even playing Netflix in 4k only uses about 25Mbps, so a standard 1Gbps connection can handle 40 devices

molten umbra

runic kayak

I got 1Gbps in a rural area, 2Gbps is available for an extra $50 a month.

#

I am almost close to maxing 1 Gbps out, my steam downloads at 800 Mbps sometimes.

molten umbra
#

What company? We don't have any internet infrastructure out here, so our options are hughsnet, verizon, starlink, and supposedly tmobile but I haven't seen that actually availalbe yet.

runic kayak

It's a local company specific to the state of Michigan.

molten umbra

they do seem to be running fiber a bit further down the street though so maybe someday soon? we will see.
