I think a good starting point is to try and think about what areas you want to have - like say, a neighborhood, a wilderness camp area, a shopping district, an outdoor cafe, etc. Then start thinking about where those can go, look for furniture, etc and go from there

I’ve had the same thing happen. Move a building on top of it and it will be sent to the recycling box. I had other things get stuck in that spot if I put anything down afterwards. If this happens, I used the terraforming tool to make a small lake in that spot and then bury it again.

So even though custom design paths don’t show up on the map, you can do a normal path in whatever color you like, then place custom designs on top of them so that your pathways show up on the map.
