Then no, you dont need exotic component to level up your character expertise level though it gets harder when it comes to exotic, named items, and skill proficiencies. Unless you have Houndsman bounty.

You can use materials donations to level up a proficiency but pick something thats actually useless. Like exotic weapons Doctor Home, Overlord, Sacrum Imperium, etc...

No stack, if you're a full red you probably won't need to use skills unless you misplay, and then you can just swap weapons for Optimist, Measured, or Killer

I had a shit load of watch points and made mule characters over and over, dumping points for printer filaments and dumped printers into expertise

But current day method is this:

Target farm CD anything with an empty character > Pick up junk > donate junk > Focus on easily obtainable named items > donate dupes > target farm gear/skill mods > decon the mods > dump printer filaments into expertise

Then just yeah, follow them and do objectives/get kills. Chances are other people will be faster at killing, so just do the objectives for them and they'll love you.
At the end there's an extraction zone, wait until there's about 10-15 seconds left to fire the Flare so you can make the most out of the timer.

Oh and very important: don't use any drones/turrets/hives around enemies that have this logo.

You can't upgrade or change any aspect of a proto item except the augment. One stat (picked at random), gets increased to max, unless you are very lucky, the others stay at the old max values.

Yeah you right, I may have been worded incorrectly ? Sorry english isn't my first language.
I meant that augment (I think it's the name of new prototype talent like echo and so) could be shown as echo for example, with wrong stats upgraded, but when you relog, it "swaps" to anomaly because it was the first one intended - and echo was just displayed wrong.
But yeah it keeps the talent. Maybe it's the word talent that brought confusion when it was in fact augment, sorry.

Is printer filament the best way to grind for expertise? im at 19 exp (from 11) and been grinding countdown for almost 2 days. a snoozefest

It's not. It used to be when printer filament was possible to get via alts. I mean, if you are lvl 1000+ SHD you still can make all printer filament and donate. But the fastest way is unfortunally equiping every slot including skills and specialization and running countdown on challenging with targeted loot.
Maybe, and I say maybe 'cause I'm not aware of xp farm with snipe and special gear, but maybe if you are SHD 1000+ it's worth grinding level on heroic with all modifiers and with some set up.
Otherwise it's the boring cd farm.
