Well you don't exactly need expanded lore for 4 as it's pretty clear cut however the terminals in the game are good starting point.

It's the enraged brutes, drones, and enemies with needlers that are the real threats.

You'd have a differing opinion if hadn't grown up in an era where game dev was pretty much at it's peak. OoT is the greatest game ever made. The jump from 2 to 3, in terms of graphics and physics engine was massive. 2-3 years earlier everything was low poly. Nothing even today compares to the halo 3 soundtrack. That was innovative in itself.
