There's the original Blam! Engine running the game and the original graphics, and then another game engine running the new graphics on top. Back when Combat Evolved Anniversary originally released on the Xbox 360, it had to fade out and back in when you swapped graphics. But the Xbox One hardware allowed them to make it an instant switch for both Combat Evolved Anniverary and Halo 2 Anniversary within Halo MCC
