Halo 2 decided to make dual wieldable guns only viable through dual wielding

There's been 4 player splitscreen since launch, it only got abandoned for the campaign due to them not being able to make it run as well as was needed.

When playing on the bigger maps that way, on an original Xbox One, it gets very obvious why they dropped it due to the sheer chugging it causes.

I've been playing Halo since 2001. I enjoy making new maps changing maps in forge and having variety. Halo Infinite is the best game in the series. It has tons of options. We just need quality life updates to the UI explorer and allow player input.

I don't usually express an interest in gore systems in games, but the brutes in Infinite, amusingly enough, actually showcase why the concept works so damn well. They're by far the most expressive enemies in Infinite to fight.

Because when I shoot a brute with a rocket in Infinite, their armor pieces go flying everywhere, they ragdoll in a convincing way, and it's like they exploded. Kind of like a PG version of what happens when you blow up a demon in DOOM or chunk a zombie's face in Darktide.

Focusing on the spectacle of the fight rather than what seems to be solely the spectacle of the Environment is what causes a game like Infinite to lose out in the modern theater of the sort of game people say Halo is.

The correlation is that other enemies in Infinite simply ragdoll, while brutes explode into parts alongside their ragdoll.

There's a reason why people still praise FEAR's bullet time, and that's because the visual spectacle is literally directly inspired by John Woo movies.

A headshot in slow-mo in that game starts as a six foot blood geyser. Electrical panels explode and arc into pieces. Furniture goes flying. Shooting a guy in the gut with a shotgun blows him in two chunks across the room and his body breaks things in the process.

And then an actual environment you can interact with through things actually getting cracked and broken

In the case of Gameplay, Halo has a high emphasis on penalizing aggression in favor of cautious play when it comes to shields. Not to the level of games like Mechwarrior (I could write a book on what I dislike about MWO's presentation and why it makes newer players so timid, and I love that game), but still rather high for an FPS of its styling.

It's why taking an active, and animated, role in healing in games is so common; Either through engagement mechanically (CoD and its healing syringes), or through rewarding activity and aggression (DOOM, Space Marine 2). So something to engage the player more heavily in keeping themselves alive through action, rather than covering and letting your shield regen.

I love Darktide because different weapons kill in different ways that make sense-I hit a dude in the head with a hammer, his head's crushed face in, like a broken screaming skull, resting in his torso. I hit him sideways with a sword, his skull goes sailing into the distance.

On gameplay-emphasizing more aggressive and action-oriented health and motive systems tends to be the modern game's succor. As games have moved away from the slow and cautious emphasis of the aughts and early teens, you end up seeing a focus on mobility, agility, and capability. Characters in CoD have universal sprint with different levels of sprint speed that differ from reckless to cautious, down to player interaction; Omnidirectional dodges, dives, slides.

DOOM gives you dodges, sprints, finishers, utility abilities.

And even then, there's dozens of tank games, so you're still SOL.

Uniqueness in a franchise that directly borrows heavily from Starship Troopers and Aliens in the first game alone is kinda like trying to find unicorns in the haystack.

And Halo's movement, as I said, by modern standards, is very bare-boned. Synthesis already happened, and we stepped back from it.

That's not to say I think the emphasis on that was made on gameplay direction was poorly done-far from it. I just feel the choice of direction was misguided and poorly chosen in an age where games want more things happening, not less. Halo was never the 'thinking man's shooter' like I've seen some claim-at least no more than much of its competition, which is stiff. But working on that sort of direction-quick snap decisions of movement and capability, stronger emphasis on that over a return to form'-would have made a difference of note.

Infinite chose to strongly step back towards roots, a slash and burn of the new to the old quick rather than pushing forward into a brave new world.

there's a bug that disables it regardless of your settings. if it's crossed out then keep restarting your game until it's fixed
