Have had both steam decks (launch and OLED) and wife has the ROG Ally. If you want to play non-steam games (she likes Fortnite) the Ally is a powerful machine.

But, if your library is mainly Steam, then the Steam Deck is really really solid. Its only when you try to go to other libraries it gets a bit awk b/c SteamOS

Mainly what I mentioned before - anti-cheats and Linux dont usually play well together, so if you're wanting Multiplayer on it check the fine print for your favorite titles (Halo finally added it maybe 8 or so months after the deck came out). And adding other services like Xbox Cloud or Epic Games etc etc are all a bit wonky.

i wont speak to your situation as i dont know it but games can often be used as a way to bring eachother together at family events! another reason why the steamdeck is useful as its basically a handheld family console
for example with my dad we play simple to understand games such as vampire survivors, and for a bit of a throwback i decided to buy a bunch of classics like pacman and stuff to tickle his nostalgia.
