I think its directly related to how many points of damage you deal or heal. I haven't checked when doing damage, but I definitely got points from healing it.

Ubisoft even send me an email if I haven't played for a while to come back and show me what's new. The marketing is good. Xbox doesn't do this for their games. Gears of War never did either.
