It depends on which aspect of Halo you're looking to experience:

• As a shooter, Destiny 2 is the closest AAA match: essentially a spiritual successor for the actual moment-to-moment gunfighting. (However, the story experience is very different.)
• As a story, Mass Effect 1-3 is an extremely well-written space epic that hits similar notes as Halo: protagonist with special abilities, supporting companions you grow to love, different races in cooperation or conflict with each other, a grand plot involving time that I won't spoil.

They seem to be trying to move the gameplay forward by having more mechanically complex boss fights. levels and side missions that can be approached in a multitude of ways and on the topic of bosses, avoiding the Anti Climatic fight that was The Didact or the repetiveness of Warden Eternal
