I went to buy Halo on Steam and was shocked by the size of the games; even the older ones are said to be 25-55GB. Is that size real? My hard drive is too small.

So, all that lore about those elites was established after the fact. Reach was the first appearance of those characters, so there wouldn't have been any fan service involved in their inclusion. Along with that, what would be the point of including a special elite squad, who are mainly encountered in cutscenes fighting the team of protagonists, killing the protagonists, and eventually killed by the protagonists throughout the course of the story? If they just wanted to include them to be a cool enemy, they could have just made them a one-time encounter in gameplay, but they chose to give them some significance by giving them repeated appearances and persistence through the story.

i may be misremembering but i thought that was established lore prior to reach (not about this specific elite squad, but about there being elite squads that would gather artifacts). they did give them some added significance, i don't think i've said the opposite, but i don't believe the were depicted as noble team primary antagonist. you said that was poor execution, whereas i believe it was intentional
