Buuuut they're also showcased as being flatly inferior to Spartans in terms of physicality.

In the Vale case, it's the ODST getting his cheekbone ripped open by an accidental melee when he gets entangled in a fistfight between her and an elite.

So I don't really think it's so much like

Standing in front of a Spartan makes you feel dread, until you actually see them being a Spartan.

Spartans, to their credit, are usually written as fallible. Even Chief has been.

They make small dumb mistakes, but because they're supersoldiers and leaders, these mistakes result in a lot of dead and injured friends.

Stone's frustration in Rubicon speaks to that; There was literally nothing she could've done to save those marines, but she still took her failiure badly, throwing the closest thing a IV can to a breakdown over it.
