here's a hint since i didn't realize this for a while and the game doesn't explain it - you can upgrade your ship stats without powerups (which is important in pure events where you don't have the powerups). when selecting the ship, press x (xbox/sd)/square (ps) on the gamepad (idk what it is on keyboard, check the bottom left corner) to open the upgrade menu

you can also upgrade the powerups in the same way, and do it up to 4 times with powerups

also if the screen turns red that means you're getting a redout from going down too sharply. i don't think it affects the gameplay much, but pull your ship's nose down (by pulling the right stick up by default) at the dip to prevent it. if you do it the other way you will scratch against the floor
