I think what annoys me the most about expedition 33's ||Maelle ending is that Sciel and Pierre shows up for the concert in a tradwife dress and normie suit. Excuse me they're an alt goth couple you cannot convince me they have those clothes||

also you can now adjust enemy HP at the expedition flags, I set the final boss to x10 and got a comfy length fight

there's also the co-op missions which you can do solo, they've gradually added more so there's like, 12 now I think

each one is about 30 minutes I think

Like, it starts by comparing 'big' games of then to triple A games of now, which is silly. That's a like ~20b market, compared to a market now where one company is bought for thrice that. Like any industry that grows, the largest players are targeting the most generic audience. Because of that the video never entirely escapes the vibe of looking at charlie chaplin movies and complaining that nowadays everything is the MCU. It would be more accurate to compare development of then to indie/double A of now (the wipeout development story is just an indie studio, right). In the year of e33, hades 2, silksong, etc. This comparison feels almost the most silly it can be.

Only asking triple A game devs for opinions is definitely a Choice, but one thing that stood out is the one dev mentioning the extremely varied tech we have now (resolutions, tv vs pc, console and general hardware, etc.) that leads to generic UI choices to avoid bugs and issues. Another dev mentions this in the comments. It is brushed past in favor of bad treatment of devs in the industry, which is fair, but that answer is extremely valid I think. It's a real pragmatic answer to why UI's of big titles (and even indies) have become more generic: an increased variance of hardware and software to make it for.

I think steam machine isn't a competitor to this sony etc. market, it's a competitor on the prebuilt pc market. This market already exists. I do agree competition is good. But I don't think this competes with consoles much. Sony games are on steam, xbox gamepass is on pc, which the gabecube is.

If people want a steam machine, they can already buy a decent gaming laptop, or a prebuilt pc that will likely be around the same price range.

He's pessimistic, keeps talking over Lune including that time right after he apologized for lashing out at her, close-minded about things he deems as bad (brushes off Sophie when she expresses sympathy for the paintress, hostile to nevrons like when Maelle wanted to get close to Goblu)||

||And all this is fine by itself - it is a realistic representation of how grief manifests in some people - but then the game expects me to be sad when he's killed off, when he's done no work to change this mindset. I'm more sad at the scene out of sympathy towards Maelle - Gustave has presumably been very kind to her offscreen, but none of it is shown to me. (like how if a friend loses a loved one you feel sad for them even if you've never met the person who passed away) I felt more turmoil at the baits of Lampmaster P3 and needing to fight Renoir at 1HP than the stuff afterwards||

||Gustave's life has been entirely about inventing a way to end the paintress, it's his converter that is supposed to turn the tide. But he can't get it made in time to save sophie, who is putting up a happy inquisitive front of the day of her death, a mask gustave can't even try to wear, he wears his feelings on his sleeve. On top of that, the kid he has sworn to protect has decided to throw her life into immediate mortal danger. A choice he can't deny her, but that does hurt him. And then, they arrive on the beach, and basically everyone dies. Maelle is all he has left (you say he doesn't do kindness on screen, but he quite literally voids the entire expedition mission statement to find maelle without even knowing for sure if she is alive). We watch him attempt to end his own life. This is not just about grief, it is a life's goal being removed from any sort of meaning. It's a deep depression. One he struggles with during all of act 1, and he finally finds some form of a new goal at the end of it - saving, or trying to save, Maelle. Your sadness being about the impact on Maelle makes sense. Gustave was about to shoot himself. Within the plot he has been living on borrowed time. The act reflects on him as a show of courage, and on Maelle in the form of more grief. Like I think that feeling you have there is the intention. I just don't entirely agree with the reading of Gustave I think. He's confronting the situation emotionally, Lune is rationally moving forward and kind of not confronting her grief on it. These are bound to clash. And emotions are louder.||
