They're more akin to different versions of the same weapon, but in 90% of cases they are analogous to an upgrade because the default zag aspects mostly don't give good boosts or abilities. Some aspects like the hidden ones change the weapon's moveset entirely

It's a bit overwhelming at first because there's a lot to choose from but you're just gonna have to do runs to get better regardless. As a general rule of thumb, for fast attacks use flat damage and for slower attacks use % increase damage. And here is a decent mirror guide #h1-for-new-players message

Divine Dash is always great. I would suggest starting with another keepsake in Tartarus, though, to get something on your Attack. Eternal Rose for Heartbreak Strike is great. It's the strongest +% attack boon and also inflicts Weak, which reduces the damage you take from enemies. And then when you enter Asphodel, you can swap to Lady Athena's keepsake to get her dash there.

If you want though, you can quickly fire a shot at the skeleton eggs and then use a volley to kill them before they spawn skeletons

Number one, above all else, is getting good with dash strikes and empty dashes.

Dash strikes for most weapons give you higher dps, while also keeping you mobile and not as vulnerable as just doing a full combo or standing attack.

You don't get any dodge frames during dash strikes though, so if you want to avoid getting hit, an empty dash, where you just dash and don't attack, is what you need to do. As you get better at the game you'll know when you need to empty dash (dodging one of the third boss fights' slams, for example) to avoid getting hit vs dash striking. Good luck!
