all of the companions are gained after completing the corresponding characters "side quest" and unlocking their heart

you then use ambrosia to level them up 1-5

each level getting another use per run maxing at 5 a run but you can only use them once a room

I finished their quest before epilogue & only got the lyre post epilogue I think?

for me I got the lyre quest kinda in the middle of orp/eur quest so I had to go several runs before I could finish it

Optimal lyre playing is once per run because there's such a long delay between after playing it and when you can play it again that you save time by just playing it once, then dash canceling towards the courtyard to do another run, and rinse repeat until you're finished

Although you'll likely want to do all the tier 1 plays at once since they waste the least amount of time between plays and doing 210 runs to do lyre sounds inefficient

but after you get past the single note plays it's definitely optimal to do the plays once per run so you're not losing out on that time for the tune to play

Way it worked for me was ||start with quite a lot of uses at first, and then strumming a few times with each death||, heading outside inbetween to get new dialogue loop with NPCs, then rinse and repeat. It seemed to progress at a natural pace that way.
You'll know you succeeded when ||interacting with the lyre produces an actual brief melody instead of random pieces of string torment||.

However, what I noticed was that it created some sort of a dialogue backlog, especially in congruence with the ||Orpheus & Eurydice|| storyline, so if you're also on that quest, there may be a conflict of priority holding you back. Just die a few more times to unclog it. (A weird sentence in any other context, I'm still getting used to it.)
