and if you're on reaction-time-maximum mode you have to use some mental effort to distinguish between the fake sound and the real sound, because you're just listening for any sudden sound
and using mental effort takes time, which will not get you a perfect catch

You only really need to reset a lot if you're aiming for records. If you're just working on sub 10 or something, you can pretty much play out every run because that's still at a point where practice mostly makes up for bad luck.

There's nothing embarassing about it. It's not a competition either really. Everybody learns at their own pace, and especially early on when you have no real idea about builds yet, luck is a very important factor.
