Tips for language learning : immersion is the best! In learning japanese it seems that ppl usually wanna grind the grammar guides, and won't try novels and such until they're ready. But trying to read those helps a lot!

Okay, so, why translators are not supposed to talk about games that have shipped
Here's how this works, right? Game developer or, more often than not, a publisher hires a Linguistic Service Provider to localize a game. LSP turns around and draws some freelancers from their pool to do the job. The game ships, and the credits don't mention localization at all, or only mention the linguistic service provider (like, say, Keywords or Lionbridge).
That way, the big LSP gets the exposure they need to secure new clients, while at the same time making sure nobody can contact "their" freelancers directly. The guy on LinkedIn I mentioned called it "protecting valuable company resources" (feels disgusting even typing that, tbh).
Essentially LSPs don't want independents to compete with their business model.

However, the status quo where only the people at the executive level benefit from exposure their business gets while working on a project is really, really bad for translators.

It is also like that in subtitling projects. You translate/QC a show or a movie, working for an LSP, which in turn is the provider for a big streaming company. You see your name after each episode when it airs, because you are allowed to, but you can't name the streaming company in your CV because technically they are the LSP's client. In video games localization industry it is actually way way worse as LSP's actually hold almost all strings.

There is this company in my country that has contracts with public stuff (think Police, hospitals, etc) for interpreting services, and when they contact professional interpreters for those services they offer laughable fares and conditions (like, say, 10€/h for interpreting services that should not be offered for less than 100€/h), under the implicit threat that they will happily hire an amateur that will accept those conditions if you refuse, therefore dragging the profession further through the mud and promoting even worse standards. Professionals tend to avoid that company unless desperate, so our public interpreting services are filled with nonprofessionals that accept awful conditions and make it harder for everyone to demand good ones

I remember in Mass Effect 2 the official translation to Czech was so bad it was almost literally just google translate, words made no sense in context and then it came to light that they had some contractors from a completely different country do it (I think it was Spain?) so they had to release a fix just for that and then in Mass Effect 3 they just didn't bother at all and just axed the Czech language completely in it and all future EA games

I see that you are discussing the ever present problem of proving your experience in localization :). We have the same problem with Polish, although I must admit that there are localization studios who started to ask me whether I want to be mentioned in the credits (usually smaller games, nothing AAA) , so I can give a name or two when I am sending out CVs, but taking into account that I translate ca. 10K words for games and software each week, it doesn't seem fair ;).

He would literally get no work without being able to present a portfolio. He is under NDAs of course, but only when the work is in progress – when the ad is aired, everyone is credited

What I mean is, if the company finds a candidate that is qualified and has managed to send their resume faster, there's nothing wrong with that person getting the job.

Fair enough. Generally speaking I would agree with you with no objections in mind. This time, however, there is one thing that bothers me: there was no test translation. Throughout my employment history, this was always a part of the hiring process. If the translation test is of acceptable quality, and the response arrives before others, then it would make sense to discard the remaining applicants.
However, I find it very strange that they would pass similar judgement based solely on resumes and cover letters in a language that is not even the target language in a proposed language pair.

I think if people who handle localization did a little more research into hiring translators specifically this could have been handled better.
As it stands, it kinda looks like they just set the budget and offloaded the hiring onto their usual HR person, who wrote up a boilerplate job ad that doesn't account for some professional specifics.

From the Void localization guys seem alright. They work with Red Hook Studios on Darkest Dungeon I & 2 (and some other projects). Haven't worked with them personally but they put forward a very good mission statement. And judging by the comments their head of localization leaves on LinkedIn, they mean what they say.

there were arguably some really good localization choices (like how they translated Skelly in french, it was so good we chose to keep it) but everything else we had to redo
the localization overall was really bland/soulless, it completely failed to capture the flavor of the dialogues and the colorfulness of the cast

Yeah, from what I saw it clearly had a very good editor, all the characters and terms are 99% consistent throughout the game when it comes to speech patters and quirks, which is a mighty feat, considering the sheer volume of text in the game.

I believe @elfin umbra shared an interesting detail here: different characters would often be given entirely to different translators. So once a translator finds a voice for the character, they get to maintain it throughout the entire localization.

If you have hades, I think 12.49 units are in itself, and 235 units are actually hades translated over it, but I can't say the same for other games.

so like, the messy part of chemistry is because we made a whole bunch of rules about stuff that work but only if you don't look to hard, but the math that shows up when you look hard at chemistry is really friggin' complicated, so its easy to start with the less right abstractions because they're useful to know and most people don't need to know more

so far chemistry teachers didn't teach me a lot of stuff that is possible to understand, it's mainly stuff that needs to be remembered, like all the logic connections are two at most three pieces long, it's just stuff like "this specific type of reactions of this specific type of acids with this type of elements goes like this except in this case and in this case" and that's it maybe my teachers all were bad or maybe I personally just can't comprehend information this way because yeah my memory is bad and I forget all these reactions immediately and maybe most people don't have a problem like this
