Really just play games. You're going to die a lot, and a lot of stuff won't make sense especially in the first couple days/weeks. I would recommend Youtubers like DontFightDucks and Flashforce if you are wanting to get a hang of the game over time. Other than that, all I can say is experience is key! Happy ghost hunting! :D

You need a lighter in your inventory to light a smudge with right click. I don't remember the exact ranges for each tier, but whenever the ghost is within that area of you and you burn the smudge stick it will temporarily blind the ghost and allow you to escape. The tier 2 and 3 will freeze the ghost in place in addition to blinding it

Or, alternatively, you can burn the incense in the ghost room not during a hunt and prevent the ghost from hunting. Spirits cannot hunt for 180 seconds, demons cannot hunt for 60 seconds, and all other ghost types cannot hunt for 90 seconds

If it's chasing you during a hunt, and you light the smudge then it will be blinded and cannot kill you for 5 seconds. The area for a tier 1 is 3 meters

jinn has a weird LOS thing if the breaker is on, acts like a normal ghost with LOS if the breaker is off
raiju straight up has LOS but it also has speed up near electronics
