the comparison of powercreep between HSR and HI3 usually ignores the fact HSR is casual vs HI3 being competitive.

So in HI3 you may be replacing slots often, but you're constantly upgrading and the gacha is now at a point where you can fairly easily guarantee you get your desired upgrade. The new category system of AR means even when a DPS pick isn't as relevant, they still have support niche.

Meanwhile in HSR, you need a ton of investment into older units to get them working in current endgame. This ranges a lot from "just" needing extremely good relics (which are almost entirely up to RNG) to needing specific teammates to even dupes (and you have that 50/50 thing to deal with). They also both replace older units with better ones and also expand into new niches, so its unrealistic to expect every niche to be covered for most players

Also, something I like pointing out is that HSR only ever shills the new stuff, while HI3 rotates permanent sets of stages/bosses, so even though it mostly shills the new stuff, old stuff also gets its chance to shine periodically in HI3
