Because this (presumably) silverback gorilla has never seen himself in a third person perspective, all he sees in the mirror is a rival silverback of similar size and power to him that might be challenging him for his territory and troop
You can see him actively avoid eye contact with the “other gorilla” in order to avoid a real battle, and does his best to intimidate and chase off the “rival” that he sees without actually engaging in a fight

These same mannerisms and social cues are obviously exhibited from real gorilla to gorilla contact, but it’s far far harder to find encounters like that in the wild compared to the ease of documentation with mirror training and experimenting

What’s fascinating about that fact is that he’s intelligent enough to know that a physical conflict is not only avoidable, but also very undesirable for both him and the other gorilla which, while it sounds like a simple and primitive concept to us, displays a level of cognition that’s rarely observed outside of humans
