Oh that is how I see it without the character colors in the way because sometimes it can be distracting to the eyes so having it as a grey color allows you to see lighting and shading better

If you have several colors next to each other they compete against one another as in one will appear darker than the other and such

so using a grey allows your eyes to only focus on the colors you need to
