First Animal species of the day (237) :
Northern river terrapin

#

The northern river terrapin (Batagur baska) is a species of riverine turtle native to Southeast Asia. It has been classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List and considered extinct in much of its former range; as of 2018, the population in the wild was estimated at around 100 mature individuals

Native range :

#

The northern river terrapin is one of Asia's largest freshwater and brackwater turtles, reaching a carapace length of up to 60 cm and a maximum weight of 18 kg.[4] Its carapace is moderately depressed, with a vertebral keel in juveniles. The plastron is large, strongly angulate laterally in the young, convex in the adult. The head is rather small, with a pointed and upwards-tending snout. The legs have band-like scales

#

The upper surface of the carapace and the soft parts are generally olive-brown, while the plastron is yellowish. Head and neck are brown with reddish bases. Males in breeding coloration have a black head and neck with a crimson or orange dorsal surface and red or orange forelegs. The colour of the pupils also changes during this period, to brown in females and yellow-white in males. During the breeding season, the color of the pupils of a female brown whereas the pupils in the males become yellowish-white

#

The species is currently found in Bangladesh and India (in the Sunderbans), Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia and Malaysia. It is regionally extinct in Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. It is strongly aquatic but uses terrestrial nesting sites, frequenting the tidal areas of estuaries, large rivers, and mangrove forests

#

The northern river terrapin is omnivorous, taking waterside plants and small animals such as clams.[7] The species prefers freshwater habitats and moves to brackish river mouths or estuaries in the breeding season (December–March), returning after laying their eggs. Individuals have been known to undertake long seasonal migrations of 50 to 60 miles to the sand banks where they were hatched. Females usually lay three clutches of 10–34 eggs each

#

The species is considered Critically Endangered by the IUCN, principally due to exploitation as a food item (including egg harvesting). Previously, immense numbers were shipped into the fish markets of Calcutta from throughout India; among the Bengali Hindus, the river terrapin was considered the most delectable of all turtles.[9] It is still illegally exported from Indonesia and traded in large numbers in China. Loss of nesting beaches and pollution are also impacting the species

#

A hatchery and captive breeding project was established in Bhawal National Park in Bangladesh and another in Sajnakhali Wildlife Sanctuary in the Sunderban Tiger Reserve in India with support from Turtle Survival Alliance.

#

appreciate your service big dawg

opal bay

they kinda just put you where they need you

vagrant horizon

ye understandable would think Navy already has that field pretty much filled up so thinking about the combat diver part more lmao

opal bay
#

i wanted to do spec war too, but mainly the helicopter ride-along IT part lmfao

vagrant horizon
#

still got a couple years to decide..and yeah for sure Ive heard they get to work near or around seals so that would be something

lmao yes dawg

opal bay

hey theyre also giving a 25,000 dollar sign on bonus too right now

but they pay for it all so im taking advantage of it

vagrant horizon

i mean yea thats the way to go since they pay for everything yea lmao. Do they reimburse for tuition you know?

opal bay

i'm an E-5 right now and an O-1 gets paid pretty much the same as me lol

vagrant horizon

Eh I figured there would be a program for that or sum but yeah Ive heard that OCS school is a PAIN thooo

well at least what my buddies in the marines say lmao

im sure its nothing you couldnt handle. one time there was a blizzard (its in chicago area) and we had to hike 5 miles with 2 100lb bags on

opal bay

and they were like why are u breathing heavy >:)

opal bay
vagrant horizon
#

I mean if we go to war there would be no reason to join as there's going to be a draft 100%

opal bay
#

we are definitely hurting for people

#

i'm on my shore duty which is supposed to be chill and they have us working 70 hour weeks because we're so short staffed

vagrant horizon
#

i mean the entire population of the US is what the reserves of China has multiplied by a few billion

vagrant horizon
#

alright to be real tho who do you think is going to set off the destruction

#

lets hear it chief

vagrant horizon
#

see if we got the same idea

opal bay
#

our military is way better. they may have PEOPLE but they have really crappy things. our ships are better, training is better...pretty much everything else is better. however, we do have a president that seems to run away from the fire soooo

vagrant horizon
#

agreed

opal bay
#

more than likely them first because i dont see our chain of command really doing anything until we are on the verge of dying

#

lmfao

vagrant horizon
#

I mean our President had citizens holding communist flags to greet Xi Jing Ping my lord

opal bay
#

kinda scary rn, not to be talking politics or anything but when their decisions are deciding your fate, it's kinda terrifying

vagrant horizon
#

cant really avoid politics today, because at the end of the day these leaders our choosing our future so..

#

or forcing a future

opal bay
#

hopefully it all gets better soon bc right now the world aint lookin too bright

vagrant horizon
#

yea unfortunately, but to be real I wish we'd just stop and deal with our own problems in the country before trying to deal with others

opal bay
#

facts. like when the hawaii thing happened and we only gave them 700 dollars

#

but then we are pumping millions of dollars into other countries

vagrant horizon
#

yea that was embarrassing and a punch in the face for those people

opal bay
#

i live in hawaii rn so i saw what it did to some people

#

and it was heartbreaking

vagrant horizon
#

ive heard of the stories that werent released on public tv and im astonished about that whole thing

opal bay
#

yeah its really sad. some families are living on the streets right now because their houses are gone

vagrant horizon
#

like I whole heartedly think the government orchestrated that entire thing just like they do everything else

#

and regular people suffer

opal bay
#

my friend went to visit the area it happened and she said it looks like it got bombed

opal bay
vagrant horizon
#

yea I had a buddy stationed out in the marines out there and it was sad the videos he sent me

opal bay
#

dude we've had so many more fires too. just the other day not even a mile from me there was a huge wildfire. thankfully i live on a mountain and it was below me but still. and absolutely nothing was done about it, they put it out and pretended it didnt happen. the islands are slowly burning away and theres no preventative measures being done whatsoever because hawaii has 0 money.

#

the only money hawaii has is from the celebrities that keep buying their land

#

and then causing hawaiians to lose their homes

vagrant horizon
#

these wildfires are all human made change my mind, but yeah the government and celebrities exactly are the ones benefiting from everything rn

opal bay
#

if you ever come here, youll see all the hawaiians live in what could be called the "ghettos" and all the non-hawaiians living in mansions

#

makes me sad

vagrant horizon
#

they will regret it soon, when we go out like the romans matrix style

opal bay
#

we really came here and stole their land fr

#

and acted like aint nun happen

vagrant horizon
#

Really aggrivates me beyond repair, our government blatantly mocks us and we just sit there and shrug it off

like its supposed to be normal

There's ways to technically travel faster than light, it's, wierd

Simply refuse to believe that if there is space faring life, they have ever even found us

  1. Mine our planet for resources
  2. Completely ignore us due to how insignificant we are

Cool thing about studying wildlife is that you try not to interfere with it, this would be especially true with aliens since obviously they are going to study an “intelligent” life form which is 99% of the time going to see you as a threat, so you would observe at a distance if at all

#

And still no point in studying since if you can achieve fast then light speed and defy our laws of physics, then they can do anything on their home planet/ galactic territory

First Animal species of the day (238) :
Scarlet ibis

#

The scarlet ibis (Eudocimus ruber) is a species of ibis in the bird family Threskiornithidae. It inhabits tropical South America and part of the Caribbean. In form, it resembles most of the other twenty-seven extant species of ibis, but its remarkably brilliant scarlet coloration makes it unmistakable. It is one of the two national birds of Trinidad and Tobago, and its Tupi–Guarani name, guará, is part of the name of several municipalities along the coast of Brazil.

Range

#

This medium-sized wader is a hardy, numerous, and prolific bird, and it has protected status around the world. Its IUCN status is Least Concern. The legitimacy of Eudocimus ruber as a biological classification, however, is in dispute. Traditional Linnaean taxonomy classifies it as a unique species, but some scientists have moved to reclassify it as a subspecies of a more general American ibis species, along with its close relative, the American white ibis (Eudocimus albus).

#

Adult plumage is virtually all scarlet. The feathers may show various tints and shades, but only the tips of their wings deviate from their namesake color. A small but reliable marking, these wingtips are a rich inky black (or occasionally dark blue) and are found only on the longest primaries[10] – otherwise the birds' coloration is "a vivid orange-red, almost luminous in quality."[11] Scarlet ibises have red bills and feet however the bill is sometimes blackish, especially toward the end.[12] They have a long, narrow, decurved bill. Their legs and neck are long and extended in flight.

#

Adults are 55–63 centimetres (22–25 in) long,[15] and the males, slightly larger than females, typically weigh about 1.4 kilograms (3.1 lb).[10] Their bills are also on average around 22% longer than those of females.[16] The life span of the scarlet ibis is approximately sixteen years in the wild and twenty years in captivity.[17] An adult scarlet ibis has a wingspan of around 54 centimetres (21 in).[10] Though it spends most of its time on foot or wading through water, the bird is a very strong flyer:[14] they are highly migratory and easily capable of long-distance flight. They move as flocks in a classic V formation

#

The range of the scarlet ibis is very large, and colonies are found throughout vast areas of South America and the Caribbean islands. Native flocks exist in Brazil; Colombia; French Guiana; Guyana; Suriname; and Venezuela, as well as the islands of the Netherlands Antilles, and Trinidad and Tobago.[1] Flocks gather in wetlands and other marshy habitats, including mud flats, shoreline and rainforest.[10] Outlying colonies have been identified in the coastal areas of the states of Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo (for example in the Santos-Cubatão mangroves of the Baixada Santista district), Paraná and Santa Catarina.[18] In recent years, bird colonies can be seen as far south as in the coastal areas of Joinville and the island of São Francisco do Sul

Second Animal species of the day (239) :
Pygmy three-toed sloth

#

The pygmy three-toed sloth (Bradypus pygmaeus), also known as the monk sloth or dwarf sloth, is a species of sloth in the family Bradypodidae. The species is endemic to Isla Escudo de Veraguas, a small island off the Caribbean coast of Panama. The species was first described by Robert P. Anderson of the University of Kansas and Charles O. Handley Jr., of the Smithsonian Institution in 2001. The pygmy three-toed sloth is significantly smaller than the other three members of its genus, but otherwise resembles the brown-throated three-toed sloth. According to Anderson and Handley Jr., the head-and-body length is between 48 and 53 centimetres (19 and 21 in), and the body mass ranges from 2.5 to 3.5 kg (5.5 to 7.7 lb).

Range

#

This sloth, like other sloths, is arboreal (tree-living) and feeds on leaves. It has a body adapted to hang by its limbs; the large curved claws help the sloth to keep a strong grip on tree branches. It lives high in the canopy but descends once a week to defecate on the forest floor.[3] It is symbiotically associated with green algae, that can provide it with a camouflage. Details of mating behavior and reproduction have not been documented. The pygmy three-toed sloth is found exclusively in the red mangroves of Isla Escudos de Veraguas, restricted to an area of 4.3 square kilometres (1.7 sq mi). A 2012 census of pygmy three-toed sloths estimated the total population at 79. The IUCN lists the pygmy three-toed sloth as critically endangered and they are listed on the world's 100 most threatened species.

#

The pygmy three-toed sloth is significantly smaller than the other members of its genus, but otherwise resembles the brown-throated sloth. According to Anderson and Handley Jr., the head-and-body length is between 48 and 53 centimetres (19 and 21 in), and the body mass ranges from 2.5 to 3.5 kg (5.5 to 7.7 lb). The brown-throated sloth is nearly 40% heavier and 15% smaller in head-and-body length than the pygmy three-toed sloth. Moreover, the brown-throated sloth is lighter on the crown. The face is buff to tan; a dark band runs across the brow, surrounded by an orange patch. The throat is gray to brown, lighter than the underbelly; the dark brown back is spotted and has a dark stripe along the midline. Facial hair is short, while the long, rough hair on the crown and shoulders forms a hood. The grayish limbs have three claws each. The tail is 4.5 to 6 centimetres (1.8 to 2.4 in) long.

#

They have a relatively small and slender skull, with a large external auditory meatus, narrow squamosal and mandibular processes, a minuscule stylomastoid foramen, and usually lack foramina for the external carotid artery and anterodorsal (meaning in front and toward the back) nasopharynx. The dental formula of three-toed sloths is:
5
4–5
[13] Two of the teeth in each jaw are incisor-like, although those in the upper jaw are small or may be absent. Many of the features found in pygmy sloths are thought to be indicative of a relatively rapid evolution of a new species in an isolated, island habitat.

#

The pygmy three-toed sloth is unique in that it is found exclusively in the red mangroves of Isla Escudo de Veraguas; the island has a small area of approximately 4.3 square kilometres (1.7 sq mi). A 2012 census of pygmy three-toed sloths estimated the total population at 79 – of which 70 occurred on mangroves and 9 in the surroundings. The population density was calculated as 5.8 per hectare (2.3 per acre). The total area occupied by mangroves on the island was estimated to be around 10.67 hectares (0.0412 sq mi).[15] While their population has presumably always been low due to their restricted range, the 2012 census found far lower numbers than had been estimated (less than 500) by the IUCN in 2010

Unpopular opinion: the 1998 Godzilla is the best Godzilla design by far.

If we had known how dinosaurs truly looked and walked and their posture while standing as we do today, back in 1954, I can bet all the money in the world, the 1998 Design or something very similar, would have been used.

On a side-note, the animated series for the 98 Godzilla was awesome too.

First Animal species of the day (240) :
Walrus

#

The walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) is a large pinniped marine mammal with discontinuous distribution about the North Pole in the Arctic Ocean and subarctic seas of the Northern Hemisphere. It is the only extant species in the family Odobenidae and genus Odobenus. This species is subdivided into two subspecies:[2] the Atlantic walrus (O. r. rosmarus), which lives in the Atlantic Ocean, and the Pacific walrus (O. r. divergens), which lives in the Pacific Ocean.

Range :

#

Adult walrus are characterised by prominent tusks and whiskers, and considerable bulk: adult males in the Pacific can weigh more than 2,000 kilograms (4,400 pounds)[3] and, among pinnipeds, are exceeded in size only by the two species of elephant seals.[4] Walrus live mostly in shallow waters above the continental shelves, spending significant amounts of their lives on the sea ice looking for benthic bivalve molluscs. Walruses are relatively long-lived, social animals, and are considered to be a "keystone species" in the Arctic marine regions.

#

The walrus has played a prominent role in the cultures of many indigenous Arctic peoples, who have hunted it for meat, fat, skin, tusks, and bone. During the 19th century and the early 20th century, walrus were widely hunted for their blubber, walrus ivory, and meat. The population of walruses dropped rapidly all around the Arctic region. It has rebounded somewhat since, though the populations of Atlantic and Laptev walruses remain fragmented and at low levels compared with the time before human interference.

#

While some outsized Pacific males can weigh as much as 2,000 kg (4,400 lb), most weigh between 800 and 1,700 kg (1,800 and 3,700 lb). An occasional male of the Pacific subspecies far exceeds normal dimensions. In 1909, a walrus hide weighing 500 kg (1,100 lb) was collected from an enormous bull in Franz Josef Land, while in August 1910, Jack Woodson shot a 4.9-metre-long (16 ft) walrus, harvesting its 450 kg (1,000 lb) hide. Since a walrus's hide usually accounts for about 20% of its body weight, the total body mass of these two giants is estimated to have been at least 2,300 kg (5,000 lb).[23] The Atlantic subspecies weighs about 10–20% less than the Pacific subspecies.[4] Male Atlantic walrus weigh an average of 900 kg (2,000 lb).[3] The Atlantic walrus also tends to have relatively shorter tusks and somewhat more flattened snout. Females weigh about two-thirds as much as males, with the Atlantic females averaging 560 kg (1,230 lb), sometimes weighing as little as 400 kg (880 lb), and the Pacific female averaging 800 kg (1,800 lb).[24] Length typically ranges from 2.2 to 3.6 m (7 ft 3 in to 11 ft 10 in).[25][26] Newborn walruses are already quite large, averaging 33 to 85 kg (73 to 187 lb) in weight and 1 to 1.4 m (3 ft 3 in to 4 ft 7 in) in length across both sexes and subspecies

Skeleton 💀💀💀💀💀

#

Walruses live to about 20–30 years old in the wild.[33] The males reach sexual maturity as early as seven years, but do not typically mate until fully developed at around 15 years of age.[4] They rut from January through April, decreasing their food intake dramatically. The females begin ovulating as soon as four to six years old.[4] The females are diestrous, coming into heat in late summer and around February, yet the males are fertile only around February; the potential fertility of this second period is unknown. Breeding occurs from January to March, peaking in February. Males aggregate in the water around ice-bound groups of estrous females and engage in competitive vocal displays.[34] The females join them and copulate in the water

#

The rest of the year (late summer and fall), walruses tend to form massive aggregations of tens of thousands of individuals on rocky beaches or outcrops. The migration between the ice and the beach can be long-distance and dramatic. In late spring and summer, for example, several hundred thousand Pacific walruses migrate from the Bering Sea into the Chukchi Sea through the relatively narrow Bering Strait
