I've stated time and time again that I wish that they would've been encountered by the classic Jurassic Park Dilophosaurus in the treeline, only to be met with an 'alpha' Dilo.

The vast difference in design being explained that the classic Dilos were transported from Nublar and the 'Alpha' Dilo being part of a separate genetic group.

if you're looking for easy, beginner friendly things to play as?

Gallimimus, Pachy, cerato are ones that come to mind. Pteranodon as well, though there is an initial flight startup you gotta learn to figure out flight, but once you got the basics down it's basically just observer mode.

and I know cerato has a high skill ceiling but a low beginner entry threshhold on account of you can literally avoid everything and just eat corpses to grow yourself to adult so it's an immensely forgiving carnivore despite being one of the more robust and popular mid tiers

It's a public testing branch. So there's 3 branches: Legacy, which is the old outdated version of the game. Evrima, which is the main version, currently supported and getting updates. And Hordetesting, which is a sort of open public beta for players to test out features, playables, and map changes that are mostly ready for installation but are given to us to act as test players to catch any bugs or balance issues that the comparatively small testers might have missed.

gallimimus is essentially the speedster. Fastest thing in the game. It's whole playstyle just revolves around running faster than anything that can eat you.

Very quick to grow, and forgiving if you die. Just make sure to be observant, and run at the first sight of anything that might wanna eat you.

When you get to a full adult too, it's exceptionally fun to run circles around predators and kick/harass them

Little eyes/ovals: patrol zone. Basically a smaller migration zone.
Trees: sanctuary. As a fresh spawn herbivore this is where you'll wanna go to grow for the first bit of your life, there's mushrooms you can eat there that will give you boosted dietary nutrients which help you get a headstart on life.
