So the genes that cause melanin production can get mutated and cause melanism
What is saying there i think is the gene that causes melanism, aka the broken melanin gene, is not present in lions. It also says that it could evolve and happen.

They are slightly different, "reserve" is a private land where the owner manages the animals freely, can control the genetics and reintroduce animals as long as they have proper permits..
A "Preserve" is also private or government owned land regulated by wildlife permits where animals may not be reintroduced, animals roam freely, and you can only control their population hunting or displacing them but not modify genetics or add animals without special permits or legal projects.

The map is supposed to be set in the rainy and flood season (mid-March to early October) and the Duck season runs from mid-November to January.

Sambar are difficult to place as they sit kinda between reds and wapiti in size. I would have put sambar in class 6 though.

I understood what he meant, sambar are larger than red deer but hunting them is generally pretty similar. You don’t generally need a large moose calibre to hunt them. So they are a class 6 animal, but just so happen to be a bit larger than most class 6 animals.
