I wanted to give a note for server operators in here that it looks like the old SIGTERM-doesn't-save bug on Linux has actually been fixed for a few builds now via Unity 2022.2 and higher.

You can download the server for free with Steam under "Tools" in your Library or with SteamCMD as app 896660. Either can be done even if you haven't purchased the game through Steam. Once downloaded, there's a manual PDF file with some documentation.

I tried on my debian server aswell on my pc over the steam tools. It always says "failed to connect". I tried to connect with ip:port aswell just ip. Crossplay is active. Password is 5+ chars and doesnt incluce world name

Well, password needs "quotes". I'm not sure single quotes are enough maybe switch to regular double quotes. Remove -crossplay, if you don't need it for Xbox players. Make sure your home router has the server two ports forwarded to the correct internal IP for the server PC. UDP IPv4 protocol.

Connect via the internal IP:port unless the server is on your game PC in which case you may need to use localhost:port.

For future reference, -crossplay doesn't use the server's internal address to connect. It completely bypasses your router forwarding. It requires you to connect via it's Join Code or the EXTERNAL ip address instead.

this was done twice just to check

we then got off and restarted the server, when we got back on, our newly build food preparation table was gone lmfao

Yes, if u blast more than 4 bread into... (like u can do with smelters) u can only get out 4 as the max output from oven.

Always save before leave/restart (-console and command "save" and server admin are keywords here). World will be always loaded on last save not when u left. I just adjusted my save graph to be 15 min instead day/night cycle. That way even if something happens or i forget... 15 min aint that big of a deal... AND if we do smth big, i hit save from console for extra caution.

You have to restart the server when you add mods.
But for most mods you don't have to start a new world, still there are some mods that work well only if you start a fresh world. Ther's a mod UpgradeWorld that allows you to fix the issue if you add such mods to a world that is not new but it's not guaranteed to work 100%
You might run into issues if you run mods that don't work with the current Valheim update.

Sorry to hear of the resource and work loss from the goings ons. The clients and servers have some independent functions from eachother that sometimes get out of sync. I find this happens more often if the server is using Crossplay.

As for losing the table, that sounds like a save didn't finish prior to the server exiting (echoing Tive). How did you restart the server? Are you running the Dedicated Server application or starting the server from inside the game? Is the server on Linux, macOS, or Windows? It may be possible to prevent it in the future.

My brother and I are having some trouble getting into his dedicated server after the Bog Witch update. We've both updated to the new patch, and my brother has also updated the server, but neither of us are able to connect to it. We don't even get to the password- it just cuts us off and says "Failed to Connect"

I got hung up on that a couple days ago. When it was enabled it wouldn't properly expose the port and I'd get a connection error every time I tried to connect.

Mac, no mods, Gportal. Downloaded world, played locally, forced BogWitch_Camp SAVE. Played locally again, all well. Can upload the .fwl file to Gportal worlds_local, but the .db seems to hang after the upload status bar says "done", and the file does not load. After the "gaming on Mac" jokes are done, what am I doing wrong? ETA: solved the problem; Gportal's File Manager FTP client was not doing the job, so I used Filezilla and that worked just fine.

We used -nomap at the start, but as weve played for longer and the amount of players is larger nomap is not really feasible right now.
I removed this from the startup batch file but the server still has no map, any reason why?

Thanks for the response. My friend set it up and just told me that’s how much we have. We have already been lagging pretty badly but he said that the game is stable at 3 gigs and maxed at 3.5 gigs. Is there probably .5 gigs being used by other stuff on the server and we are actually totally maxed?

No problem. It seems like you've made a good, simple manual installation of the server on your other PC. IMHO, that's the best way to do it.

You have options in the server's start .bat file. Things like -world, -password, -port, etc. You can add an option there to have the server create a log file that you can then check fot any errors the server has. Such as any world save errors.

So, just add this option in there to create the log. Put in your own UserName.

-logfile "C:\Users\UserName\Desktop\ServerLog.txt"

Then restart the server and recreate the error and see if you find any errors in the log that will show why the server Saves aren't working right.

i added the -logfile line and the server wont start, but the .txt file is made with all the logs. is it supposed to be like that? there are a lot of some shaders errors, i dont see any other type of error in there

The server should start up with the logfile just as it usually does. It may be that the server PC is having some kind of disk write problems external to the server. You can check and see if it's too full or something. There's a Windows disk utility that checks your disk for errors as well.

To use it you would open a command window as administrator and type in the comman CHKDSK it will check the disk for errors and flag any that it finds.

Will the pre bog witch version last forever on steam? I may not ever update the game as I have so many mods that are unable to be updated from previous mod authors that vanished that I enjoy more than some small updates. It would cost me thousands of dollars and waste way to much of my time to get someone else to redo these. Just want to make sure that it will last forever so I don't waste my time 😦

I already use r2modmanager. I have 150 mods. Over 20 which I have had made. https://thunderstore.io/c/valheim/p/JamesJonesTV/ and more than that is listed here is posted on other mod creators listings. Most of my mods I can not use on the update as the person who helped make them for me no longer is making mods. This is a huge problem that I wish would of been taken more seriously for people who make and use mods. Some of the most loyal players to this game love mods. Just saying oh it doesn't matter till 1.0 is a joke. That's like saying well I shouldn't bother putting any effort at all into this game until 1.0. Thousands of dollars I have spent on trying to bring content to this game while waiting half a decade for an official release. For that all to just be wiped away by some updates would be absurd.

And if a new version of the game creates and update that the people who made the previous mods are not updating to the new version then those mods can no longer be used with the current version of the game.

The people who will continue to play this game long after 1.0 are the people who use mods. That's with just about any game that has a lot of mods and a steam workshop for example. As people have played the base game for a certain period of time and are more "hardcore" about the game, mods will keep the game alive long past when updates to the game have stopped or are minimal. Casual players will almost always be less mod oriented.

All of that looks normal, you'll want to look further through the logs for a hint. If this is the first update you've done since the Bog Witch release, there is a world upgrade phase that can take some time to complete.

Thanks for posting the full log, @pearl raven. I don't see anything obvious, unfortunately. The world generator missing usually means something didn't work before that. Are you running with any mods?

I don't see SteamWorks or PlayFab initialization logs here, which makes my first guess a networking issue such as one of the ports already being used by an existing instance of the game server. If this is the case and you can't find whatever terminal or in-game server is hosting the ports, a reboot would be an easy fix. Another possible network issue is simply your Internet connection not being available when you started the server. Or if you're using a SteamWorks API emulator for air-gapped play, something wrong with the API emulator.

My next guess would be a Steam or store update being interrupted by the Windows update. In this case, a backup of your local world(s) followed by a uninstall+reinstall from your game retailer's platform would hopefully restore a working server setup.

That's likely the issue. Drop the hyphen and second port number. Just -port 2456. It will automatically use subsequent numbers for ancillary services.

Network speed is probably not as important as network bandwidth for Valheim. They are two different things. The network speed is how fast data travels, while bandwidth is the potential amount of data that can be transferred within a specific period, often visualized as a "pipe" where speed is the flow rate and bandwidth is the pipe's diameter.

And, in any case, for Valheim, it likely varies widely depending on whats happening with the game. On in-game server? On a dedicated server? Lots of 'stuff' going on ATM like snow storm, raids, graphic settings in the game, etc. etc. ?

And, just to make it even more meaningless, individual comm connections will vary depending on the particular 'hops' in any given link. Routes are specific to an individual connection link and can vary widely. Some routes are just randomly more efficient and less problematic than others.

Hello everyone! My friends and I decided we needed a server to play Valheim, so I took on the setup. I followed the manual carefully on a Linux server, and the server launches fine, and I can connect to it—but it always loads a new world! The correct .db and .fwl files with matching names are in the server's world directory, and the start_server.sh script is set to load this specific world. Any ideas why it keeps creating a new one instead of loading ours?

Is there something strange about your world's name? Special characters or something? Make sure the -world option is set correctly in your start up .sh script file.

If the server is somehow confused about where to find and use the world files, you can add the -savedir [path] option to your start script.

It's hard to guess at the problem without more info about how you installed the server (SteamCMD? Docker? Mods? LGSM? Something else?). And what your start up .sh looks like( -world option? -password iotion? Quotes in the right places?).

As Jaga said, Valheim has a very client sided setup, the server is literally just there to save the world.

Clients handle simulating all of the things happening in the world. So when no client is connected the world "pauses" since the server doesn't run any of the world.

If you play on very large servers the world will constantly progress because people are always online, when playing with a small group everything will stop when no one is on.

Posting this to hopefully help other Linux players..

We have a dedicated server hosted on Linux, and we all game on Linux, we kept getting ZRpc timeouts with and without crossplay enabled.. So, instead of installing PlayFab Party dependencies, we just decided to be lazy run Valheim via Proton in Steam and that's what got us all connecting to the server.. If this was already known, please delete this.

Most mods will go on the clients and you need to find out what to put on the server:

  1. If it has version checking - everyone or no one, does not work if only on client or server
  2. has only config sync - put on the server if the mod has config-sync and if it matters to you
  3. client only = has no config sync
  4. server only mod
  5. admin mods - both or admin client only
    There are some that don't work like planbuild or wackysdb if you install them on the client only.

I don't think the Valheim dedicated server has 'versions' the way the game does. It has 'build IDs' instead as does the game.

But if you think the dedicated server is out of date, just go to your Steam library and re-verify it's files. It's under Properties when you right click on the dedicated server tool icon there. The same is true for your game. With a rented server you'd probably need the host to do that. Unless their web menus have an Update option.

How do you know that the server is up and running? Does the host have Server Status info in it's web menu system? If you have been told to connect with the IP and port, then you can go to geekstrom.de/valheim/check and see if that site can find your server online and running.

Does your rented server have -crossplay enabled? If so, Join with the Join Code. If not, use the IP and port address that you were given by the server host.

Most importantly, make sure that all of your mods have been recently updated and are not old and broken for the current game version. You should be getting your mods from thunderstore.io and using their r2modman mod manager to install and manage them on your game.

I've got an apparent server incompatibility issue too. When I run the dedicated server's (PC) update commandline ("C:\SteamCMD\steamcmd.exe" +login anonymous +app_update 896660 -beta none +quit) it doesn't think there's any updates. The server is on version 0.218.15 but the latest (Steam) client version is 0.219.16 ... so my players can't play.

My initial workaround thought is okay, have the Steam clients do a version rollback.

Would need a lot more info to give you a quick fix. But if the BogWitch 10/29 update killed it, then it's likely an old mod outdated. Just make sure you're actually using both the current game and server versions.

@bleak silo I'm guessing you're already on public-test. lgsm not especially well documented for Valheim, unfortunately, but looking at this, they may default to no branch specifier:

which is not the same as the main branch if this being passed directly to SteamCMD. It will start you off on the main branch if you have never adjusted it, but I'm assuming you have at some point.

If my suspicion is correct, you would need to set branch="public" (blank password) and do whatever triggers the SteamCMD app_update in order to truly switch back to the main branch.

i'll try... only way i got server running atm was with debug (and debug sucks as this wont allow me to run server normally, background)... i cant go public-test as it somehow denys password yesihavebackups and all i have figured out... so far at least... that problem is in LSGM finding remote build. Since it cant find it... i belive it cant compare and somehow triggers shutdown. Thats my wild guess at least.

Does anyone have sporadic issues with the dedicated server command line code stopping?

I find myself having reliable dedicated server performance but randomly the server terminal will stop and I have to keep CNTRL+C and restart it over and over until it works again

It's like it get's "stuck", using Cntrl+C catches the server up to where it's supposed to be. I have no idea how to help fix this.

Also, I find that when i remove -crossplay from the batch code, I can't get a join code after running it. does anyone know of a fix for this? THank you!

Are you on Microsoft Windows? I think both PowerShell and cmd.exe have an edit mode that blocks stdout and by proxy much of the server's activities. If I recall, this mode is activated by clicking inside the Window. I don't have a Windows machine in front of me to test. Try right-clicking on the top bar or however you can get to the terminal settings or properties and disable Quick Edit if it's an option, at least while you're running a server.

As for the join code, you don't get one when you disable crossplay. Without crossplay, players must directly connect to you, either by IP address (Internet/external IP address if they aren't in your LAN) or by a domain name that points to your IP address. Alternatively, you could make the server public, thus discoverable via the menu system. If you don't have experience exposing ports in a LAN over the Internet, we may be able to help you should you want to go that route.

Yes, windows will stop std out if you click in the window.. dont click in it. 🙂 You can scroll, but clicking in the box stops the process from outputting with essentially stops your server.

Having a weird issue with my server. It's a Windows 11 machine running a dedicated Valheim server. Issue I'm having is that when I connect, I see a window saying "Incompatible version". I have a process that used to work to update my server (app_update 896660 validate) and while it reports that everything is fine, I still receive the error message when trying to login.

If you don't have any mods out of sync, it means your server is on a different branch than your game/client. For example, if you had ever switched to the public-test branch, SteamCMD will keep you on that branch until you explicitly switch back to the main branch. If your Steam (GUI) or app store-delivered game is not on public-test but your server is, they could easily be incompatible.

To switch the server from public-test to the main branch, first back up your local world files, then add -beta public to your app update args
e.g. with your prior command line:

stderr.txt is 0 KB and buildid didn't change. additionally, I just tried a different force_install_dir value and the result claimed ERROR! Failed to install app '896660' (No subscription) and that seems pretty concerning. I do have a pihole on my network, but disabled its blocking and had the same "no subscription" result. Hmm, I would try updating SteamCMD if you haven't in a while. It's totally possible the server got misconfigured for anon access on Coffee Stain's side. I can check out the steam store metadata after work in a few hours. That error may happen if the install dir's permissions don't allow update.

The dedicated server supports mods out of the box, such as those injected with BepInEx. You're probably going to have to give us more, like the operating system you're using and a snippet of your server logs from the startup sequence.
If it really does look like a mod is preventing server startup (i.e. startup works vanilla), you'll likely get better help in #mods-issues than here.

Yes, you can do that as long as you keep the world's .db and .fwl file pair together. Where you may find those files depends on where the server is.

If remotely hosted from a rental Co., you would need to find the world download function in it's menu system or via a support ticket.

If the server is locally hosted by one of the players, then the world could be in several places locally depending on how the server was installed.

I've downloaded the world file and made the edits on a singleplayer version of the game but its still finding an old version of the game to run so would there be a way to change it though a properties file or something?

I start the server just fine on machine A, but when I attempt to log in with machine B, I get a notification, "Error - Steam. You are logged in on another computer already playing valheim dedicated server. launching valheim here will disconnect the other session from steam". How do I fix this? (edited)

A quick workaround is to launch Dedicated Server outside of Steam. Where Steam has put it will be up to the operating system you're running it on. But you would just run the batch file or shell script for server startup in a terminal or with your favorite process/daemon supervisor.

I don't know that "Failed to read data for the AssetBundle" one, but my first guess would be permission issue for the server assets. Make sure they'd be readable by whatever user the dedicated server is running as.

Second guess what be a mod incompatible with the server if you have any.

Third guess would be server assets directories got corrupted and you might consider re-downloading the server files.

Sure, a dedicated server sounds like what you're looking for. You could host it yourself if you have a stable system and Internet connection or engage with a 3rd-party host. You'll need the crossplay option enabled in order to allow Xbox access. This forces the use of a relay behind the scenes, but it also means it's easier to get started.

If you want to host it yourself, you can download the Valheim Dedicated Server in Steam if you switch your Library view to include Tools. After download, you can locate where the files were placed and there'll be a PDF manual in that directory. There's also a download link to the manual in this channel's pins.

That's fine if the script is started from the correct directory or it cds to it. Your globalgamemanagers files are up to date and not corrupt, so it's bound to be something else.

If so, I'm not really familiar with that but I believe there's a -beta option for the server startup command. It's in there that you'd select the pre BogWitch version. I don't know the exact -beta option to use but others in here can help with that.

Not sure if this belongs in this channel but I'm trying to access a backup of a dedicated server in singleplayer so I can use dev commands for something I'm working on. I put the db and fwl files in the worlds folder and it appears in my world list but whenever I try and launch it it says " Load Error. this world save is corrupt. Would you like to restore it from the most recent backup?" and clicking either yes or no makes no difference. Can I fix?

Hey guys, I set up a dedicated server running in a docker container, but steamcmd is having issues downloading the update: "Error! App '896660' state is 0x6 after update job."
If I go to the internet to decypher this steam error code, it supposedly means "No connection to content servers" (found here https://github.com/GameServerManagers/LinuxGSM-Docs/blob/master/steamcmd/errors.md#error-0x6)
I have seen that the Valheim devs are aware of this problem as well, this is from the latest patch notes for 0.219.16:

Please note: There are some issues with Dedicated server in Steam's anonymous mode for Linux, which might cause some dedicated servers on third party server hosts to not start. This appears to be an issue not specific to Valheim, but we hope to see a solution as soon as possible!

🚨 Important for anyone facing the same issue, found a workaround
Just remove the steamapps folder that is located in the data portion of the docker container or host which is running SteamCMD. If you are using lloesche/valheim-server-docker, that's the volume you have bound to /opt/valheim (https://github.com/lloesche/valheim-server-docker?tab=readme-ov-file#basic-docker-usage)

Edit: If you are running the server on a machine that has other steam games installed, DO NOT delete the whole steamapps folder, as it might include other programs you have installed from Steam. In that case, you can try deleting only folders and files relating to valheim dedicated server specifically (app ID 896660)

Hi, I'm on xbox series x and I have opened a server hosted by Nitrado. I have tried to connect to the server in game via the Game port and IP and both cases I get "Failed to Connect"

I also do not see any servers on the community tab.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game as well as restarting the server on Nitrado.

Has anyone else encountered this ? Thank you for your help in advance.

has someone seen this problem before and might be able to help? Im running a dedicated server with oracle and the server now crashed at least three times while autosaving. The first time nobody was connected, the second time 2 people were connected and now the third time one person was connected.

thanks. Did rolling back fix it for anyone? I just switched it over to a windows boot for now. For clarity, it's not the game, it's steam. Logging in with steam credentials and not using "anonymous" resolved the issue.

I just bought a Dathost server for me and 2 friends who all live within 35 miles of each other and the server location. We get pretty substantial desync, My two friends are on xbox and I'm on steam. I remember a couple years back steam players didnt want to play with xbox/gamepass players because of lag - Is this still the case? Is there a fix? I found two mods, smoothbrain networking and better networking but they're both pretty old. Wondering if those help.. Would it be better if I played the gamepass version? Thank you in advance!

I'm not sure any of the networking mods will help much if you can't also install them on the server as well as on the players' games. And crossplay with MS playfab network which requires connections to where ever those servers are and back just adds another layer of difficulty into the picture. You'll just have to try them and see.

Networking and ReturnToSender have had some good results and can be installed together. BetterNetworking has also been reported to improve lag plus it can be customized more than the others.

The ping doesn't actually stack. The way it works with crossplay enabled is that all the players and the server have to individually connect to the MS playfab lobby servers. Each will have their own individual routes to and from those servers as will the game server.

What complicates the issue is that the Networking mods mentioned above adjust the buffer/packet sizes for the PC games' communication. Larger sizes are usually better. This assumes that the PC games' default sizes were too small to be optimal.

However, we don't know that the Xbox sizes are also smaller than optimal. Those may actually already be larger. Or not. No way to tell.

I've got a server running at Valhost and I'm wondering if it's safe to update to the latest. I've been holding off because of the patch notes saying that there are issues with Steam anonymous mode. Has anyone else updated to latest on Valhost and been ok? Are there any workarounds? I saw what looked like one in here but it didn't seem like something I could do without more direct access to the server.

Hi, is there anyone here hosting a dedicated server on Ubuntu or another Linux? I have a problem. When I started hosting my own server, I would run it via the terminal by executing the server_start.sh script. Today, I set up an automatic process: remote start of Ubuntu on my terminal, autologin, and autostart of the Valheim server via a systemd service. Now, when I autostart the server, I get a new map, but if I turn off the server and start it manually as before, I get the old map. How can I get the old map to load when the server starts automatically? One change I made was adding the line WorkingDirectory=path/to/directory/server_start.sh to my myscript.service because without it, the script tried to open valheim_server.x86_64 as a directory, causing an error.

Hei, just wanted to let you know and if some other people run into the same issue. I was further looking into the problem and I think the biggest issue is that my server is an ARM. So I need to use an emulator and I think at some point in the autosave of the server the emulator or I don't know maybe both end up in an seqmentation error. Which stops the whole server. I have since then changed my server to an old windows 10 laptop and I think I will continue with that until steam supports ARM or I am ready to rent a server instance.
I saw that other people also run on an ARM but from the feeling I get its not recommended to run via an emulator. Can work but also can not work... Thanks though

Is there a way (mod?) to opt-out of being a 'host' when playing on a dedicated server? I play with a group of Australians and I'm in the UK. When I'm first in an area they all lag, but when one of them is first I'm the only one with lag. I'm fine playing with lag I've played a lot before but it's their first time. So I'm looking for a way to hand off being the host if someone else comes within range of me.

I rented out a server from Valhost for friends and I, few of the commands were working mainly the "sleep" command. Decided to download a couple of mods today, Sleep command stopped working, even though Devcommands mod is also included, and turned on. Almost every other command works except sleep command. I've never installed or used SteamCMD. But I think you're logged in as a particular userID right now. Is that the same userID you were logged in with when you installed SteamID. That might be a problem, if you're not.

Crossplay doesn't use the 2456-2457 kind of ports but it still has to use port(s) somewhere to communicate with playfab.

Hello everyone. I am having a serious issue with a dathost server. I have had people connect to it with the mod pack I have installed, yet for some reason I cannot join as I get an incompatible version error. I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times and nothing has worked. I have tried launching from Thunderstore (both modded and vanilla) and get the same error. Whenever Steamcmd runs, it never opens Valheim, it just gives the join code. It also doesn't load the server I have listed on the dathost site.

I don't use GPortal, so I don't know what their control panel looks like, but I've not seen any with a world seed picker at startup.
You can specify a seed in a local single player game, and then import that save onto your server.
If GPortal give you file access, you shouldn't need FTP software to do it; just drag and drop the save into the worlds_local folder.
Then on the server control panel, specify which save you want to launch with.

This isn't GPortal, but it's a pretty easy to follow guide on how to do it without FTP

Check your local files as well as server version.
And check all your mods. You might have to manually update mods on your server (i.e. remove and re-add with the latest version)

Depending on your host, they may or may not auto-update the server. Switching server off and on again can trigger an update, with the right host

I am having the same issue, removing playfab closes the connection and we are unable to connect to the server. I am unsure the steps on resolving this issues since I do not see any additional settings within the configs. Any assistance would be great but PlayFab is a headache.

Assuming that your server is installed on your home LAN, then when you're not using crossplay, you need to have the server's ports forwarded in your home router so that the internet traffic to the server can find the server's internal IP address ok.

And without crossplay, you don't get a Join Code to use. You have to connect with the server's internal IP address (or you can use "localhost:port) while the external players not on your local LAN need to use your external IP address:port. Usually your server will also show up in the Steam server list but even when it does you may still need to use the "localhost:nnnn" address to connect to it from being on the same LAN.

You could try reverifying the server's files from your Steam Library. That should give you a new .bat start up file so you'll have the opportunity to make sure you've got all the options set properly in there with the quotes and the dashes all in the right places.

Make sure you've got a proper name for the server and it's password and put those in quotes. No non-standard characters. Just regular letters and/or numbers. And at least 5 chars in the password (without the world name in it).

Valheim Dedicated Server does not interpret many console commands from its stdin like you are attempting. That save command would have to be sent from a game client.

Looking at the documentation for pterodactyl, it looks like it supports a custom stop command:

if you configure the egg to use Ctrl-C like that mentions, that should trigger a save when Valheim receives the SIGINT. I don't know how long pterodactyl will wait for graceful shutdown, hopefully long enough.

I've notice that about 2 hours in the auto item collections stops working, and that happens in even less time on my dedicated server i just setup. Is there any way to prevent or fix this.

The error msg you posted above is pretty clear about what's wrong.

The player with that msg needs to have the OdinsKingdom version 1.2.31 mod and the StructureTweaks version 1.32 mod installed.

Not newer versions of those two mods and not older versions. Exactly those versions listed in the error msg.

Ah, just found the rest of your post with details. Sounds like it's time to update the game and forgo the mods for the time being. Anyway, not all game updates will break all mods. You might get lucky

Hello, my boys and I, as well as a gur from work have been playing on a dedicated server I am renting from BiSect. It has worked with no isses for 2 months. Im on PC via Steam and they are all on Xboxs. In the last few days they keep getting disconnected and the game crashes to the xbox home screen. 2 of these xboxs are on my same internet connection. The other one is not. Nothing seems to trigger it, it just happens. I have had 0 issues on PC. When they log back in they are usually logging in to an empty inventory, and they have no graves. It has been very frustrating. Any ideas? Bisesct could not see anything on their end.

Im not familiar with xbox Valheim, but I'd search it for the player ID of the people who get kicked.
If the server is booting them, it should have a timestamp and reason why

You'll have to keep up with game updates, and apply them to the server when they occur. Same with any server side mods you might use. As for restarts, there should be a restart option available via the host company. I'm not sure if you can automate it if you're hosting it on your own system. I'm on one server that reboots daily, and another that only does it if there's a problem or update. Both function nicely, except I've been kicked off when I forgot to watch the time and the game restarted 🤣

Hello, so my friend was playing on my server with me and my son, but he was disconnected suddenly out of the blue, we had been playing the past two days. Me and Son are local, friend joins in with the ip and port, and that works as he is connected in... but now anything we try he is not able to join for any reason, and the only reason that valheim gives is "failed to connect" I host a server with mods 23 of them had no issues until a few hours ago, no mods got updated or changed in anyway so far.

Maybe your ISP changed your WAN address (check that on whatismyipaddress.com). Or, maybe someone left their VPN on.

Also, have him check his game logs and you check the server's logs for any error msgs that could explain it.

And verify that your router's port forwarding for the server PC's address is still correct. Some home routers can change a PC's internal IP address when the 'lease' runs out without warning you.

easiest way is to rent one from a game server host. Its a lot less effort to set up, and you'll get some support if you have problems
it'll be around £10/month for something stable, up to about £20 if you want enough ram to run a bunch of mods

just google valheim server host and you'll find plenty of choice, though quality can be really hit and miss

we've been hosting one here for several months, and its run without any issues, with a bunch of mods

I've made a world and my friend can't join bc he gets a "banned" message. we've tried every solution available on google but we can't fix it. I can join his worlds but he can't join mine whether or not I've unbanned him through console commands.

Go to your server's worlds_local folder and along side it you'll find your 'bannedlist.txt' file. Check it to assure that his SteamID is not in there.

Also, check your 'permittedlist.txt" file. If there are any SteamIDs in there, including your own, then no other SteamIDs can join the server and will be treated as 'banned'.

I've had a strange issue lately where my dedicated server has just been turning off. It's running on a windows 11 machine, max reccommended specs for a ded server. and I don't mean the machine is turning off, just the command line window that runs the server. it's happened like once a week? auto updates are turned off, so it's not restarting from that, has anyone else run into an issue like this?

Good afternoon, I'm running a dedicated server on my pc for myself and friends to play. I use the same pc as the server to also play valheim. Previously we used a Gportal to host but that ran out so we switched to player hosting. The server ran fine with -crossplay, but I heard that it can be a bit unstable, along with that a friend also could only connect for like 5 mins before being kicked. I decided to try running the server without crossplay and I setup port forwarding, allowed the same ports through my firewall and assigned a static ip address to my pc (only used this after I heard that a dynamic ip doesn't work). Here is where my issues start. Server launches and I can connect using my local IP, however i can't connect to the server using my external ip, same as my friends. What's odd is that the server is detected as it fetches the name of the server. I also used https://geekstrom.de/valheim/check/ (got it from the help section in pinned msgs) to check my server and it said everything was fine. When looking at server logs as i'm connecting, nothing changes so I'm not sure what the issue is. Apologies if the answer is obvious

You might never be able to connect to your external IP from internal, not all home routers support doing that. As for your friends how long ago did you change from using crossplay, if it wasn't long enough and using the same port then they are still going to try and use crossplay to join due to cacheing issues. When moving from crossplay to non-crossplay it's normally also better to switch port server is running on to avoid any caching issues

You could try forwarding the 2456 port and see what happens. Do you have crossplay enabled? Do you need it? If not, remove it.

You have 2 places to open ports:
1 Router - must forward - unless you're using vpn or crossplay or something else
2 OS firewall - if your firewall is on and "deny-incoming" you need to open the ports, but the amp software is doing that for you? I don't use AMP.

If you'd wanna hide your ip then something like a vpn with port forwarding, but that would cost unless you find a free one or host one yourself on a remote machine.

i forwarded the port 2456-2458 both in firewall(inboundand outbound) and router

i have restarted the external pc and router

changed it to any ports instead of specific in the firewall and back

Have you ever connected to the server or is it brand new? The server is installed on another PC on your home LAN? Or on the same PC as your game? Are your ports forwarded with the UDP protocol? Are you using mods on the server or on your game? Have you tried connecting using the server PC's internal IP address and the 2456 port number?

Hey, Iam looking for a way to make a noncrossplay server, but the console doesnt give me an IP to connect to. While having crossplay enabled, it gives me my WAN IP, and its working fine, but if I disable crossplay, I cannot connect, and Ive tried both WAN and LAN IP.

I started a noncrossplay dedicated server to play with friends. I used devcommands to change from no map to showing the map when one player was lost, then changed back to no map while he was still present. Now I can’t see any of his shouts and when he logs on, the “I HAVE ARRIVED” message doesn’t appear for me. Other players can see his shouts and his login message. Only I can’t see them. In the server console, his messages do appear so I can read them, but the messages don’t appear in game. Apparently he is muted to me only. Is there some way to correct that? Some kind of unmute player command?

See if you can set your Power options on the laptop so that it doesn't 'Sleep' but does power off only the Display after a period of inactivity. That would be ideal. If it actually sleeps, the server would stop running.

The cooler is a good idea but may or may not be needed. Give the laptop some time to try running the server with the display turned off and then check the laptop case to see how warm it gets under those circumstances. Then decide whether it needs the cooler or not.

Thats not going to work like you expect. But in order to copy a single player world onto the server you just replace the servers save eg: server_dir/saves/map_name. You would need to ensure that you are setting the servers start command to target said world directory- in this case -world "map_name"

You can use this mod to remove certain spawns from your world permanently. You'll need to find and read the instructions carefully. Maybe practice on a test world first to assure you won't corrupt your actual world.

You need 3 things to make devcommands work on the server. You need ServerDevcommands on your game. And you need it on the server.

And you need to put your SteamID (17 numbers) in the server's Adminlist file. It's in the same folder as the server's worlds_local folder. Along side it.

Question: Me and my family and a close friend is in Ashlands right now. The lag is immense. Asksvin kan be on the horizon and after a few seconds freeze they are eating our dead bodies.
I run a private server on a separate computer running win11pro. So we connect through local IP and my friend through external yet we have the same experiences with the lag. I've been looking at memory usage and CPU usage and last time we had a super high lagspike I looked at the other screen where the stats were live. 1.8/32 RAM and 3.1% CPU used by the server.
Can I somehow allocate more memory and CPU to the game to allow it to just consume more resources and hopefully stop lagging our butts to death? Any other tips?

I don't think there is any way you can allocate more memory and CPU to the game. However, that may not be your problem anyway.

One thing you can do is try one or another of the comm traffic control mods that have been known to help in situations like yours. Have a look at the BetterNetworking, Networking and ReturnToSender mods at thunderstore.io.

If you are using crossplay and don't need it to support Xbox players, remove it and forward the server's ports in your home router. That will remove any possible problem caused by the MS playfab network server issues.

The icon you describe occurs when there is a time-out situation happening. Most of those are caused by either a problem with the server's file saving procedure or comm traffic delays between the server and players. You may want to review my previous post here for any benefit you may receive from that.

i have forwarded the necessary ports already and applied the correct firewalls, i also had removed the -crossplay out of the file, but then the start-up of the server got stuck on one part i can't recall what the exact console log it was now i have -crossplay "false" in the start_server.sh and it boots up again but we have the same problem still. The server is also directly wired into the router via a managed switch, i also had no networking issues on this server with other servers i hosted like minecraft servers or my dns/web server i hosted or a mySQL server i hosted

We're playing on my local server, three of us.
When running around swamps looking for crypts, there's swamp ground but basically nothing in the swamp.
There's only ground and some water.

All of a sudden, maybe 10-15 minutes while being in this desolate swamp, there's some lag and then things spawn in, like trees, crypts etc, basically everything missing in the swamp.

Is this due to a slow server or something?

How much Ram do you have? What cpu and gpu do you have? Also are you running a dedicated or non dedicated local server?

dedicated server on ubuntu22, it's a virtual machine on 'server grade' hardware, assigned 6gb ram currently, and 2 vcores and 4 threads
hard to specify exact power, it's a decent machine in my basement 🙂

I've played for years on it, before ashlands, without any problems whatsoever

Interesting! The fact that it's almost caching all of the graphics processing and then dumps all the spawns in one foul swoop really indicates a bottleneck at the processing end. Is there any rubber banding occuring?

Yes but only very slight. At worst, a seconds delay when interacting with stuff, but it fluctuates.

In the past I had similar issues. I tried everything from more ram to more processing and it never got better. I eventually noticed that it ran fine when I was the only person connected. I eventually noticed that it only occurred when a specific person connected. Valheims net code is a bit buggy, if a single person is having networking issues everyone on the server sees and feels it from my experience.

Hello everyone, is it still so that you can not use devcommands on your own dedicated server?
And that you can make friends admin, but they won't be able to spawn in items or use commands like fly?

I've heard this is disabled to prevent cheating, which is weird on a private, password locked server. And you choose to give your friends these commands.

No I don't want to admin the server seriously, I just want the basic feature Minecraft also has. Make a friend an admin so that he can use what people call "cheats" I want them to be able to fly most of all, and spawn in items if they need so. I choose for this on my private server with passwords so I don't know what the developers mean with preventing cheaters. I don't need or want mods for this 😛

Try the other method. Create a new world but don't start it. Choose the same seed like Vikings, but name it Dedicated and choose modifiers. Do not start! That will generate a new Dedicated.fwl file without db file.
Then rename the vikings.db to dedicatd.db and upload both to the server.

You need to make sure that you're uploading the world's file pair without mixing up the .db and .fwl with anything outside the original matched file pair.

Also, make sure that you're getting it uploaded into the right server worlds_local folder at the remote site.

Then, make sure you have the -world "[name]" option spelled exactly right and in the right place on the server for starting the server up.

After all that just restart the server.

My friend currently hosts our Valheim world, he sent me the two files from worlds_local:
Vikings.fwl & Vikings.db

I bought a server, started it, it created Dedicated.fwl file and Dedicated_backup_auto.fwl
I replaced both of those files with my world files:Vikings.fwl & Vikings.db
When the server restarted there were new Dedicated.fwl and Dedicated_backup_auto.fwl files created in the same worlds_local folder.

In the start_server.sh file I adjusted the following:
./valheim_server.x86_64 -name "Dedicated" -port ##### -world "Dedicated.fwl" -password "#####" -crossplay

If you want the server to start with the Vikings world files, you have to change **-world "dedicated" **to -world "Vikings".

The order doesn't matter as long as the server can find them both. And you don't need to delete anything. The server is only interested in the files with the -name "[name]" you give it in the start.sh script file.

Hello all, been trying to figure out why my dedicated server isnt transfering a couple of .sh files, primarily start_game_bepinex.sh and start_server_bepinex.sh . using gportal and ftp for my transfer. tried a couple guides of downloading valheimplus / minus but im still getting same issue. any help? thanks

HI, just wanted to get an idea on something thats occurring on my server;
created a new dedicated server on windows after defeating fader on an old one
3 of those characters joined the new server, 1 new character
we got bat raids right near the start
so we then proceeded to each clear our keys
we are still getting surtling raids even though we have only just defeated eikthyr...
also player based events was NOT enabled on the server

If the server is running on the same PC as your game, then you would use localhost:2456 to connect to it. And the ports used by Valheim are UDP protocol. And, of course, you always need to have the assigned port and also that port+1 forwarded.

Also, I've heard that sometimes you need to change the server to a new port to get it to show on Steam. Or maybe just wait longer for the Steam cache to clear itself of the old port.

Hello. I'm confused, I wanna raise a server on the Arch Linux operating system via SteamCMD. It seems like everything needs to be done in the guides, I run the server by ./start_server.sh but when I launch it, I don't see the line at the end, like many others, "The server is running IP:PORT", but it just displays what's in the screenshot. Please help me resolve this issue. I raise it so that each of my friends can connect when they have the opportunity.

Have you forwarded the 2456 and 2457 ports to the server's internal IP address using the UDP protocol in your router's port forwarding options?

If so, use the geekstrom.de/valheim/check website to see if it can see your server. If it can't, then either your port forwarding isn't working or something else is blocking that comm traffic. Maybe your PC's Firewall or a VPN or some other Windows security feature.
