I see sometimes many going with Hp food instead of stamina, which can be worse option for 2 reasons:

  1. You don't need as much HP as mage when you use staff of protection and
  2. Having less stamina for running/jumping/dodging when needed can turn very fatal quickly in dire situations.
frosty frost
#

Dont like it either 😄 hence why i use the other two

If I go mage I usually save porridges for the Mistlands feast and use stuffed mushroom and seeker aspic for eitr foods.

in most cases you don't need to max out your weapons/armor

tired root
steady viper

they're pricey and the gain is very minimal, whereas you could spend that time better slowly getting the new material

#

mathematically, you'd be spending a lot of time in the black forest just to gain some extra 6 armor in total, which isn't that much

worn barn
#

I'm no veteran of the game, but in my 2 major playthroughs so far I've skipped bronze/iron armor entirely. I made them on my first play but rarely wore them.

steady viper
#

even just looking for new food in the next biome outweights the benefits of improving your armor to the max lol

ebon marsh
#

It only makes sense to upgrade your armor if you are struggling more than you’d like to be with your current defence

#

And mathematically speaking the armor in the first half of the game is a lot more beneficial to upgrade because the less defence you have the more beneficial each point of defence is

#

Log overhead of troll is 70 blunt damage

lvl 1 all bronze is 24 defence so you receive 46 damage

lvl 4 all bronze is 42 defence so you receive like 33 damage

Many folks carry on even to Ashlands with Frostner, it solely depends if you want to switch to sword version that has similar frost but higher physical damage, note that it also costs more stamina to use.
Most noticeable differences between swords and maces are their different secondary attacks and that maces have higher knockback (which can help defensively in Ashlands) and swords have no multi target penalty (their damage don't get split between targets when hitting more than one enemy at once).

Hi,

I've been playing valheim for a few months now and since about 2 weeks ago the game crashes at random times.
I'm experiencing multiple crashes per hour and it's getting frustrating, losing items/ progress due to these crashes.

my setup:
AMD build
GPU RX9070XT
Windows 11

What I've done to work around this.

  • lowered settings
  • let steam verify installation
  • reinstalled the game.

All to no avail. I get a unity error popup and the game closes, losing a lot of stuff in progress!
I've been searching for solutions but haven't found any.
Any help is appreciated !

Depends where you are headed.
Building hammer is kinda BiS to have, plus portal materials to build quick portal back to your base.
Hoe can be useful in swamps, to level watery areas to ground level.
Leave cultivator in your base, you only need it for farming.
Pickaxe and axe can be good to have, but if you use axe as your weapon then it goes with you anyway. They can also be left until you need them and have established an outpost to the new biome that has portal to your main base.

full grotto
#

Idk what the cultivator is.
I’m still a noob imo, I’ve beaten the first boss and I’m trying to farm the Black Forest but I found a thing for the second boss that showed me where it spawned and the alter is like super far from where I’m at so I was just unsure about what I should prepare I haven’t built a portal so I’m still not 100% sure how they work if it’s one way travel or both and I’m lowkey kinda lost atm I’m working on getting copper and iron smelted but I need to farm deer for there hide but I can’t find any to save my life sorry this turned into word vomit lol

Portal is simple: you connect 2 with a same tag and can move between those locations. But only 2 can be connected to each other at the same time, so you might want to build more in the future.
One simple way to manage quick departure to base is building one portal and leave it without any tags, then while exploring you can simply build a workbench and portal which connects right away with the one at your base.

full grotto
#

That makes sense but I already named the first portal I built it just cause I could lol but I think I know the name of it

tired root
#

Yes, when you name another portal with same tag it connects to the one at your base.

#

Note also that some items cannot be transferred through portal by default settings (all metals mostly), but that option can be adjusted in world modifiers. But I recommend trying default way first.

@full grotto My estimation of the important basic rules: 1. Three best foods you can manage (watch timers, refresh when they start to flash, it is worth it). 2. Always have rested buff (can't be stressed enough). 3. Stamina management (most people die because they panic attack and run out of stamina) patience is your friend. Those three things make the game so much easier and apply to every biome, the rest is just preference and playstyle.

cobalt ember

Just in case it's something you're curious about, 1 iron bar = 2.5 armor stands

regal wedge
#

So I'm currently in the plains and I've never found the swords to be especially good weapons and worth the material to craft them. I've always found that maces or special weapons like Frostner are better in almost all regards. Are there any sword lovers out there and if so, what do they bring to the table that other weapons don't?

cobalt ember
maiden verge
#

Swords are most op in game (other than atgier) because of no damage loss on multiple target hits. Mistwalker is the way when you get to mistlands.

cobalt ember
#

Unfortunately too few enemies that are resistant to exclusively blunt damage exist

regal wedge
cobalt ember
#

Honestly as long as you're not maining any kind of pierce damage you're good

regal wedge
maiden verge
#

If you are to plains and want to farm the silver for it, the silver sword is a great first foray into what swords can do. It is expensive (around 160 silver to max it out I think roughly) but an extremely viable weapon for a long time.

echo sparrow
#

there's also a BM sword isn't there?

regal wedge
#

There is a BM sword. I'm considering trying them again but wasn't sure if it was worth the investment.

cobalt ember
regal wedge
#

currently my go-to weapon is the porcupine.

#

Just looked really cool but everything I'm seeing says it suffers from being split damage types

cobalt ember
#

it mainly just suffers because pierce damage sucks

#

Too many mobs are resistant to it, almost everything in the ashlands is too

regal wedge
#

Pierce is that bad hu? I really enjoyed the spear class in the stone and bronze age but once I read maces were super good in the swamp, I haven't really used one since

cobalt ember
#

Not to mention the oozers and blobs

regal wedge
#

yeah between many things being weak to it and nothing resisting it (except maybe aboms I think), it made the swamp a lot easier than it otherwise would have been.

cobalt ember
#

That's what I hate about the game's balancing, so few things are exclusively resistant to blunt damage that it makes mace gameplay too easy

echo sparrow
#

swords are a nice generalist weapon that's usually at least decent against most things and lets you carry a shield--solid, not flashy, in my book

regal wedge
#

I already died a good bit in the swamp but being without a mace would have made it intollerable. Since black metal is so plentiful, I'll probably make a sword with it and give it another shot in place of the porcupine. It'll probably be really nice in the clusters of goblins

#

The porcupine certainly didn't feel like the upgrade in damage I was expecting

tired root
# drowsy shadow does upgrading staff of the wild increases summons dmg?

Only the projectile damage and durability are increased, but quality doesn't affect to the amount of roots or the damage they deal, damage of them is affected by elemental magic skill level.
So you can save 3 jades by not upgrading the staff, you usually want to rely on the roots when using it.

cobalt ember
echo sparrow
#

They can be very useful. Some examples:

  • Poison blobs are effective against the residents in Frost cave (cultists and ulv are weak against poison and blobs resist their attacks)
  • Growths can be strategically positioned against fulings when raiding their camps, especially if there are starred berserkers
  • Lava blobs are effective for mining stone/copper from ground and grausten from ruins in Ashlands (those ruins contain a lot of it as they are buried quite deep in ground).

opal marten

like u place 45 degree beams on the beams from floor to up and place em towards middle roof?

loud rapids
#

That may help, but the shortest path is a straight pillar of beams directly below where the roof is collapsing

#

The shorter the path the more stable they’ll be

opal marten
#

well the beams have like 4 roof gaps from the collapsing part

loud rapids
#

I still don’t know what you mean by that

opal marten
#

ok ill try to explain xd im so bad at it sorry

ill draw it for you so bad at explaining sry

#

here, from straight beams to the collapsed part is 5 roof lines if u understand, so is it worth doing 45 beams from the straight ones to there would you say?

loud rapids
#

It is worth it for sure if that will provide enough stability to keep it up

#

However if that isn’t enough, the best way to make it more stable would be to build a pillar of beams from the ground directly below the collapsed roof up to it, as that’s the shortest path from the ground to the roof

#

And if that doesn’t work either, you could always create a pillar of terrain and build up from there to get max stability from higher up, though it’ll take up a fair bit of space in the middle of your building, and it probably isn’t necessary here

opal marten

ok, ill try it out definitly thank you

steep tusk

Runestone?

civic owl

Oh there it is.

steep tusk
#

Mushrooms are the second forageable and Ribcages are the second mineable.
Runestone was the one icon I had no use for so it fell into the slot of "doubled-up things" 😄

#

I don't make Thistles or Tin because the first are just obvious to spot when walking and the second is just "follow the coastline" and you break Tin in 2-3 hits so it's not worth a permanent mark the way copper is.

civic owl
#

I don't mark Tin either obviously but if I ever find a blackforest with a lot of them it makes sense to have them marked if you ever run out.

buoyant peak
#

i'm not... what are you talking about?

hollow lava
#

That and devs decide what to add / change based on what players want, and if it's simply not possible to do then the devs could just say that. Like modders can do it.

drowsy crane

Seems you're a bit upset about speaking with the community in a community discord.

buoyant peak

i really don't know what's the logic behind "i'm agreeing with what you're saying" but using a tone that makes it seem like you're disagreeing

hollow lava

buoyant peak
#

i literally mentioned above about devs being the ones deciding on features

#

they don't want to, they won't add it

and caves are not and will never be possible

drowsy crane
#

This isn't a case of, it can be done and so it will be. There's a design philosophy that extends beyond what's possible, and considers so many elements. Gameplay intention and performance being paramount.

hollow lava
#

You said that making cliffside caves and lower minimum dig height for certain biomes / land shapes isn't possible, yeah?

buoyant peak
#

no, i said caves are not possible

increased height for terrain is, but they don't want to

hollow lava
buoyant peak
#

...

hollow lava
#

I'd prefer if you just told me whether or not they actually said that

#

Maybe I'm misunderstanding

#

To me it just sounds like you personally deciding whether it's possible or not when you aren't actually saying that the devs have put out that message. Saying "they won't" or "they don't want to" doens't feel super concrete to me, or is just a bit difficult to understand.

drowsy crane
#

Terrain based caves are possible but aren't a part of the design for the game. If they were to change that philosophy, so many things would need to be adjusted. Mob pathing for example, they currently form basic paths atop the terrain, but with two levels of terrain, this would become a much more complex pathing calculation.

#

That's just one aspect.

hollow lava
#

Okay yeah, I prefer being told actual reasons why it's not possible rather than just "devs say no"
so thank you

steep tusk
#

Sometimes "devs said no" is the reason though.

hollow lava
#

And that's perfectly fair yeah

drowsy crane
#

Rianu is just giving the shorthand to be fair.

hollow lava
#

I just wanted something a little more informative than just that, the phrasing sounded a bit like you were inferring that answer rather than redirecting the answer given from the devs

#

I'm not the best at understanding phrasing sometimes though so my bad

drowsy crane
#

Not to worry, but in some cases all we have is what we're presented with. Now, if you're truly adamant about a cave structure, you can spawn in large rocks above a trenched area to form a pseudo cave. Also, the instanced caves can be built in with a certain command.

#

I could also see a suggestion surrounding terrain limits being interesting, where a console command could alter or remove these limits entirely.

Worth is subjecthive to the individual 😭
I cannot determine what you, personally, do and do not find worth. Nor can anyone else.
Look at the stats and bonuses on the armor, if it sounds good to you, then it is good. If it sounds bad to you, then it is bad.

Do you parry enough that the increased damage taken doesn't matter?

Hi, I’m having trouble connecting to my Valheim Dedicated Server.

My Steam client is set to auto-update and shows version 0.221.4,
but when I updated the server using SteamCMD with the following command, it became 0.221.5:

Is there a way to either match the server to my client or fix this version mismatch?

I've suddenly encountered this strange problem with saving my game. I've been around the ringer of so many solutions. None seem to work. I've recently discovered that the issue MIGHT be tied to a specific zone where Hildir would normally spawn. At least I think. I attempted to create a new fresh world with the same seed, and there I can save just fine. But as soon as I enter that Hildir spawn location, then I can no longer save. If I log in to the world away from that area, the game runs like normal. Until I go to that location again. And I don't clearly see any errors in the console or in the log. I'm at my wits end, hopin' someone here has had similar issues or might recognize what's going on. My assumption is the problem is worldgen/mod related, but I honestly have no clue, since nothing pushes any errors.

Any help or guidance or some direction to go in would be much much appreciated 🙏
(also sorry if this is the wrong channel for this)

Edit: the two screenshots show my initial save. Which just states a value is null. Subsequent saves say there is a "sharing violation".

because when i did a "hard" difficulty preset run, parrying got nerfed hard (it was pretty annoying, but i managed to beat the game)

true steeple
tired arrow
#

ok thanks, im gonna slide combat back to normal, because i dislike the nerfed parrying part, since it just makes killing most enemies without an overkill buckler shield such a tedious slog

Im alright with increased hp and damage but me having to get a buckler that is above 1 tier biome wise (like i need a leveled up silver buckler just to be able to parry trolls in black forest is 💀)

true steeple
#

Alright with increased damage is alright with nerfed parrying. Nothing about the blocking calculations are changed.

#

But if block armor was multiplied with the damage increase you'd take exactly 50% more damage while parrying instead of much more ThinkingTroll

tired arrow
#

oh i guess the big shields are worth it in hard mode and above then? Im aware buckler parrying is extremely OP in this game, like sekiro style input but has dark souls level stagger duration when they get parried, so its kinda understandable

true steeple
tired arrow
#

would medium shields be the best for hardmode and above?

true steeple
#

I haven't played higher difficulties but I'd expect the bucklers to be better in most biomes when they're available. Keep in mind that when parrying, silver shield and black metal shield are stronger than iron buckler, but carapace buckler is stronger than flametal shield.

tired arrow
#

ah got it, also as someone who managed to get through hard mode, i noticed that i basically needed a buckler shield that is 1 biome tier above compared to the current biome im at in order to parry attacks from alot of enemies, which i didnt really like that much.

imo the buckler parry nerf aint it for me, im gonna go back to normal for now lol, ok time to start a new world for the new update 🫡

marsh bough
# daring ridge is bronze armor better than bear armor? i understand i get more defense with the...

In my opinion there's actually an objective answer to this:
If you're taking too much damage and dying, you need heavier armor.
So at BF/swamps we have Heavy > Light > Bear in terms of damage reduction (Bear actually causing a damage taken increase).
Keeping in mind that practically all damage in the game is avoidable: If you dodge and parry with 100% accuracy it makes sense to go with the lightest armor possible for its various other benefits.
If you're getting hit a lot, dying and losing skill points, you should move up to something heavier until you are progressing better

soft flame
tired root
# soft flame How tf am I ment to kill them bears 😭

Slash weapons are better options against them, as they resist blunt and pierce but not slash. Fire arrows can work if necessary as fire is their weakness, but it can take time due to pierce resistance. Bears are perfect targets to train proper combat skills like dodge and parry and you are able to parry their weaker attacks (swipes with one paw) even with wooden shield.

#

In terms of difficulty, they are quite on par with trolls, having more HP and resistances but dealing bit less damage and having more variance in attacks, IIRC they have 5 different attacks.

white vapor
steady viper
#

they go down really smooth, I tell you

#

on the contrary, the torch actually makes it harder: they move around and some of your attacks miss, and generally you do base damage instead of double, which makes things really tedious
