It has black forest tier enemies dropping materials for swamp tier equipment and food, with a swamp tier knife than can be obtained as soon as you kill Eikthyr. I wouldn’t put it in any specific point in progression, it’s just the space between real biomes.

parrying does make stuff take more damage but tower shield guarding sends a decent amount of enemies so far away from you that it basically resets the fight, at least in the earlier biomes

Because they are a key to why I rarely die? My wife doesn't use shields, or dodge roll, or use shields. She dies far less than pretty much anyone else I have ever played with, but she would die a lot less if she did at least use a shield.

I started soon after the Valheim release. Parry made the fights too easy, so I tried tower shields. I like the fights much better, so I stuck with it.

If I started today, with the setting options we now have? I may feel differently, but it was the only way I could effect the game difficulty at the time.

So now its just how I like to do things.

you first take half damage from the attack because of bonemass, then have that halved damage further reduced by armor, and then blocking calcs apply (i think)

i know for sure that bonemass power does influence your stagger bar after you parry

Blocking is done before armor and character damage modifiers. Shield damage modifiers are done first, which is why serpent scale shield can stack with other pierce resistance.

ashvines are found very quickly to replace jotun puffs for food if you didnt make a farm of them, and you usually have a portal next to an area where the mist is cleared because wisp torches exist (for farming sap)

Yeah, we have so much Eitr as it is, and neither of us really want to go the magic route, plus our farms (and most of our roots) are on plains/Mistlands borders. So yeah, unless we just decide to explore for the sake of exploring, which we have done, we will not "need" to go back into the Mistlands.

The game has done very well, its not inconceivable that they have something else in the works and perhaps a second team working on it, but thats complete speculation.
Also, you cant really set off a whole company to work on a game from scratch, you need an embryonic stage where the main focus is the current game but a few devs gets together to get a basic idea of what the next game will be, so that when focus does switch you can hit the ground running.

So its possible they're putting together some kind of prototype or design document. Again though, speculation.

But yeah one of the hardest things about balancing an MMO is, much like the real world actually, providing an experience where all participants enjoy it. A couple of years ago we had this thing in Eve where a guy kept deliberately despawning some of the best paid combat sites in the game. What he did wasnt a cheat or an exploit, it was fitting with the whole sandbox thing, and it made 1 very loveless, bitter guy happy, but no one else was happy about it.

You cant just shower every player with resources in an MMO, because if everyone is rich, no one is rich.
You have to manage the economy and gameplay systems in such a way that valid participation is richly rewarded.

i did notice something i suspect is a design aspect of ashlands that makes me respect it more. i think a lot of it is about mob control, since everything hurts everything out there, kiting morgens and valkyries to kill the other dudes is super rewarding. dangerous at times, but when it works, its fantastic.

I just kinda stopped trying to be as symmetrical and efficient as possible, and just embraced the layout of farms being a little crooked. Kinda makes it look more realistic and stylized to me.

With that being said, I know it bothers some people. It’s easier said than done to abandon the desire for perfection and straight lines, but it’s pretty liberating!

I just make one in mistlands and one in plains 🙂 for the plains one i try to find nice islands, just like ~40m (20 normal floors) in diameter which can be easily teraformed and spawnproofed completely

I go for just at least crafted... I get to try out the weapon and if i like i can upgrade. Also it entails building a complete new base in every biome and every biome base got only the stuff up to where I am at there. So now I found a nice place in the mistlands and start building the new base there 😄

I put them on top of buildings. Serves as defense when anything attacks them, and it increases my run and jump while I collect honey. The buildings I use are the ones in Villages.

One of the reasons I like this game is its unpredictability.

I had encountered an infested mine, but with a 1 ⭐ seeker and two normal ones, I had a hard time to even enter it. Got killed, got my revenge eventually, only to notice there's another seeker and a 1 ⭐ spawned at the entrance again.

So I went exploring, saw a light in the distance, decided to check it out and was attacked by a few seekers. At that point I was like "could it be....."
Approached it, turned out to be a Dvergr building. Got closer, encountered two more seekers, both killed, but also saw a staircase going down. And had both Hugin and Munin appearing. Both giving me a message of it being a special place, but now abandoned.
So went down and saw the message to enter popping up.

Meaning, it could be indeed.
And while it included a seeker soldier, that mine is most welcome. 😄

Had my first death. Sailed 20 minutes out to the swamp. As soon as I landed, an abomination, a couple oozes, a wrait and some skeletons jumped me. So here I am.. naked.. no gear.. no boat... having to recraft everything all over again.. T-T

I think there's 3 lessons in that.

1. Don't sail immediately into the swamp, or dock there. Instead, land at a more "friendly" biome and enter the swamp from there.

2. Always bring a pocket portal when you go exploring, so it's easier to do a corpse run.

3. Keep your old gear, as you may need them for a corpse run eventually. This includes your old boats.

Do I sound like a wiseguy? Yup, perhaps. But it's the lesson all of us learned the same way you did. The hard way.

The "good" news, even leather armor, the crude bow with wooden arrows and the flint spear with wooden shield can be enough for the corpse run.

Most important in that case are your Eithyr power so you can run in, but more important, run out, 1-2 stamina, healing and poison resist potions.

Use the poison resist potions. You should have gotten the recipe in the Black Forest.
Use the highest possible Black Forest food. Meaning, carrot soup, deer stew and minced meat sauce.
Use a bow to lure the enemy towards you and fight them at your terms.
Bronze shield or buckler for defense, axe or mace to kill them.

Armor depends at your preference. I prefer troll armor because of the extra sneak skill. But bronze armor works too.

Sword can be used too, but the axe can be used as a tool and a weapon. And with the Aboms, using the axe instead of a sword saves you from using one inventory slot.

One of the things this game is (trying) to teach you is that inventory management is the key to survival.

You can bring all your tools, weapons, armor, potions and food with you; only to notice you got 4-5 slots left at maximum and this need to run back and forth between the resource and your portal / boat countless times.

If you are able to reduce the amount of things you bring with you, you will have to return to your portal / boat when you can't carry things anymore because you become overweight. Which is a lot better.

In my current (video) run I got 14 - 16 free inventory slots at all time. And it still feels like I'm lacking space once in a while.

In the top bar: sword, shield, bow, pickaxe, ooze bombs, hammer / axe, health potion, stamina potion.
In the bottom bar: helmet, greaves, tunic, cape, meginjord, wisplight, 100 arrows, hammer / axe.

In the two center bars I got two different food items, to replace the ones I had eaten, while my third food item is a feast.

i'd just like to stop here and complain for a minute about the cooking skill. It's potent but the skill gain is... not good. after feeding four people, myself and three others for... had to do math... 150 hours (day 386 but we've been on/off afk) I was at 32 skill. I used a mod to temporarily gain 150% skill gain and cooked 160 serpent, 32 raw fish, 20 fish wraps, 8 serpent stew, 16 meat platters, 18 honey glazed chicken, 16 misthare supreme, 8 bread and 7 wolf skewers and am sitting at 36 and 60% cooking.

I feel better after venting that. Thankfully I have an idea how to tweak it to my personal tastes but after spending all those resources to level so little i felt somewhat cheated

Man I hate it when I get killed by weird stuff done by the game. We were in a dungeon, and my wife told me there was a Seeker basically hanging out over my head, and that is what killed me while I was fighting a 1 star seeker. It wasn't flying, just there, attacking me from behind. I was using Demolisher, if it was close enough to hit me, why wasn't Demolishers AoE knocking it back? My wife said it wasn't even taking damage.

I'm playing a bit of Enshrouded and its a great game but its making me appreciate Valheim even more. The dev team just get how to make a good game from top to bottom, they make it look easy. Its the little things, like how in Enshrouded the first things you fight are terrifying zombies, but in Valheim the first thing you fight is a boar or greyling then as the enemies get stronger they also look more intimidating.

How every resource seems important and useful, I'm still in the first region in Enshrouded and I have 3 crates full of unique stacks of items, when you get spammed with so many different types of loot a lot of which you might only use a couple of times it just has less of an impact.

Also, apart from high quality equippables pretty most of the resources are as abundant as each other and spread out, so it doesnt push you in the same way to explore further out to find what you really need, like copper in the black forrest.

You dont have the reward of chancing upon a whole heap of the thing you needed.

gnerally, explore new areas (won't spawn in explored map) and look for different pickable stones on the ground,
specifically:
||can spawn in Meadows, Black Forest, Swamps or Mountains (BF being the most likely to find imo)
spawns in unexplored areas further than 1000m from map centers
at altitudes between 5 and 20 meters above sea level
looks like a big stone (more than double the size of regular stones), lighter in colour and smoother in appearence (a pinch darker and as smooth as flint stones) slightly triangular in shape (smoothened angles ofc)||

yea, that runestone has its own PoI group that is concentrated mainly around the center of the world, with the normal black forest runestone group including all the other ones and being way more spread out across the world.
i think almost every biome kinda has that, one "master" runestone group for the miscellaneous ones and then a second group that only includes one runestone that's saved in your log. the boar runestone, drakes, draugr, etc.
but nowhere are the two groups as unbalanced in their rarity as the black forest

It's bit slower, especially the first hit windup, but when you get used to that it's very good weapon type. It has no multitarget penalty for primary hits and also higher stagger multiplier for both primary (1,5x) and secondary (4x) attacks.

Ive only used the atgeir a couple times never tried battle axe, normally I run sword and sheild or frostnir and sheild otherwise I'm running my knife on its own, but I recently started using staff of embers a lot to and I kinda like the crowd control

I like using battleaxe in swamps as it's slash damage so Abominations don't resist it, plus it gets staggered easier.

Honestly, I would kill the troll.

I know its hard at this point in the game, but for each troll you kill you can build another peice of troll armor.

Then you can mine in peace.

You will want troll or bronze armor before you go to the swamps anyway, ideally before you fight the next boss. And the consensus is troll armor is the best in this biome, unless youre really really keen to do a heavy armor build for now.

The most foolproof method is to spam him with fire arrows from a distance and just keep backing up. He will often get slightly stuck pathfinding so it doesnt take too much to kite him.

I THINK a community server is the ones you find on Steam. A regular server is like the one I used to run, you pay a third party for hosting it. The one I paid for stays up 24/7, the community server is up however long the person creating it keeps their account up and running the game.

Once you find a patch of them mark them on map, they respawn in 4 irl hours

I have enough patches to get 43 of them every time I do a 10 minute run for them. All marked on my map.

What I do is I find a spot where there's a good amount of mushrooms close to eachother (20 ish) and then build a treefarm in that area

That way every time I cut down the trees there I get a passive 20 mushrooms

on the plus side tho there arent really any enemy spawns either so i have a massive farm for crops

i remember one time i explored the mistlands and was high up when i spotted a gjall and it one shot me

because i was point blank and it hit all 3 fireballs
