I would like them better if the dude didn't reverse grip them and only use half the range lol

timid inlet
#

i dont even remember why i did leave using them they are quite good tho in early game

burnt leaf
#

the first weapon i tend to use a lot is the flint knife, with a wooden club as backup for stuff that resists pierce and slash, i upgrade the knife to the abyssal razor but actually skip the bronze mace and sometimes the iron one too.
frostner and the crystal battleaxe are weapons i always make because i have no trouble mining more silver than i could ever need, but knives kinda get left in the dust there on my playthroughs, past that it's all atgeirs and eventually the berserkr axes

#

i probably will still use frostner on future ashlands landings because while it is slow as heck at killing ashlands enemies, it is also safe as heck, low effort hehe

then my friend died in swamp and never played again ;/

#

then i started a new world and used Clubs bucklers axes and Atgeirs then they becamed my mains

i used to also make the silver sword, black metal sword and mistwalker but now that the stabroll's been patched out, idk if i can touch swords again.
it was a busted exploit but damn if it wasn't fun to use TvT

burnt leaf

frosty walrus

mistwalker is very good for morgens, better than silver sword for asksvins and voltures and still good for everything else

timid inlet
#

more damage * per hit ?

frosty walrus
#

charred and valkyries take 150% spirit damage, silver sword has very high spirit damage

ashen marsh
burnt leaf
#

the silver sword is one of the only "elemental" weapons that was balanced before early access release, so its numbers were decided a bit...different from how they balance stuff now (read: it's a bit wild compared to newer weapons but honestly i think it's better that way, some of the newer elemental weapons just suck)

storm anchor

45 spirit in one sword, holy smokes.

frosty walrus
#

it's also great for yagluth

burnt leaf
#

"if a damage type isn't instant and only affects a small group of enemies, why hold back on the amount?" is a reasonable way to balance a weapon like that, but they seem to have changed their minds about it since
granted, the silver sword was also balanced before H&H, back when spirit damage didn't stack, that probably also influenced how much spirit it has. the knife and battleaxe were both added with H&H

timid inlet
#

i am usauly using the wooden club not until swamp but usualy until bonemass :p then switching to frostner as fast i can

#

i think i totaly missed silver sword

storm anchor
burnt leaf
#

fire too, there was no stacking DoT at all

storm anchor
#

So all of them were just another poison damage back then. Hmmm

burnt leaf
#

that's why it's such a big deal now that fire and spirit do stack, which might be confusing to newcomers because saying that as a positive thing makes it sound like those damage types are mechanically great, when "they stack" in reality just means that they're only slightly worse than physical damage types, unlike poison, which is significantly worse Ragnar_laugh

main sonnet
#

It's petrified bone. So it's most likely they mined the old rib cages and skulls just as we do.

#

IMHO that might also explain why we find the occasional empty ancient armor. Because the Dvergr already mined the Black Marble from it.

unkempt rampart

Thats just a game mechanic, no way they would have used that over the surrounding abundance of stone, "I was thinking of building stone mine, but lets use this dead body instead" ๐Ÿ˜†

I can't think of any other reason we find empty Ancient Armor.
Or Dvergr excavating a skull, but not a ribcage nearby.

Maybe the giants have been building with the remains of their dead for a long time and the dvergr just salvaged their ruins, as we do now with theirs

inner pebble
#

Hey, folks. Been a minute. Looking into getting back into Valheim but... man, the Ashlands is such a slog, it's just exhausting.

Are there any mods that kinda rebalance the Ashlands in such a way that it's less of a grind? I don't want to take out all the difficulty, I just want it to be more fun and less of a second job to get anywhere

main sonnet
inner pebble
#

Yeah, I understand most of the mechanics of the biome. I've been all through it, I've taken down several fortresses, I've killed valkyries and morgens and whatever else, I just haven't done Fader yet. Hell, I even forged the freakin' fire sword, Dyrnwyn or whatever it's called

#

I just think about doing all that again and... feh. Meh. Bleh. Exhausting. Like, I did it, I survived it, I played Ashlands on day one when the spawn rates were REALLY crazy, I just don't want to do it again unless I can take it down a notch

main sonnet
#

Spawn rates have been nerfed in the PTB. I dunno if you have been playing when that happened, so not sure whether or not you've experienced the "too easy" (according to some) Ashlands now.

Either way, the channel I pointed to is the place to look. And hopefully it'll help you liking the Ashlands.

inner pebble
#

When was that nerf? I remember the first spawn rate nerf, a few weeks after Ashlands came out

main sonnet
#

That was the nerf.

storm anchor
inner pebble
#

Right, right

#

Ashlands was still a huge hassle after that nerf, though.

#

Now, again, I did it. I slogged through it. I got up close to the point of killing Fader. Could have finished it but honestly I just wasn't having any fun. Too much slog, too bleak, didn't feel like an adventure anymore. Just a grind. Just a job.

#

Hence why I'm asking about mods.

main sonnet
inner pebble
#

Yeah, I posted there.

main sonnet
#

So it's just a matter of waiting.
Considering you made it up to Fader, I don't think that'll be that hard. Or at least I hope it isn't. ๐Ÿ™‚

inner pebble
#

Well, I'm probably going to start fresh when the new biome comes out

#

The whole game feels great up to the Ashlands. Meadows up to Plains is a smooth ramp-up of progression, and then Mistlands is a bit of a difficulty jump but not too bad, and then Ashlands is just a WALL of grind. Hence why I want to rebalance it.

#

It looks like the North Is going to be more chill, so that's cool

tranquil kernel
#

Ashlands is an active (if undead) warzone its supposed to be more than a little harrowing

mild moss
#

Making that first beach landing was so much screaming.. I mean, slight panic and lots of death, er hiding, er viking valor...

inner pebble
#

...meh. I'm not finding any mods for what I want

#

Fellas. I might just skip it. Play something else or something. I'm sorry, but Ashlands just completely breaks the pacing of this game.

#

It just stops being fun at Ashlands.

tulip mauve
#

I think Ashlands both had a spawn nerf and agro nerf, which were both fairly impactful

#

The agro one seemed to be more of a bug fix though, as burning trees would alert mobs same as if you were chopping down the trees

inner pebble
#

Yeah fine but I still have to seige like half a dozen fortresses and dance around two-star warriors (because taking them head-on just takes too much time) and I have to assemble nine bells and, and, and

#

It's too much. I'm telling you. It's too much slog.

#

I remember when I first got to the Plains, back before Mistlands was a thing

#

Getting one-shotted by a deathsquito

#

Terrifying. But really interesting! Then I figured out their pattern and when I had the trick of parrying that first attack, it was super easy to swat them

#

I worked out the rhythm of parries and strikes, got good at handling crowds of goblins

#

Even the boss fight was interesting, there was a sequence to it. Intimidating at first but then you figure out how to wear him down

#

The Plains felt like a culmination of everything I'd learned in the earlier biomes. Managing aggro, managing stamina, parry and strike, etc

#

Mistlands changed up everything because now the enemies not only hit hard enough to break your block unless you parry perfectly, but they also are able to move over the terrain way better than you can

#

Now stamina management is way harder, because the terrain itself is draining it

#

All of the weaknesses of the movement and combat systems are exploited by the biome, the timings of the attacks are set up to trip you up

#

BIG difficulty spike but you eventually get better gear and better food and you get way more cautious and cagey in a fight.

#

Mistlands was the first biome that would straight-up just kill the shit out of you, even if you've mastered it, because sometimes you just get caught in a bad spot by too many seekers.

#

Beautiful biome, cool concept, but punishing. Very punishing, especially at first.

#

The mystery of it drives you to keep exploring, though. I never rolled my eyes and said "man I'm sick of this biome" because even when it was hard, it was interesting, and there was a lot of really cool new stuff to unlock. I mean hell, MAGIC SYSTEM, freaking cool

#

Okay so punishing but good rewards. Would have liked a stamina rework to make the terrain a little less punishing, but it's fine.

#

Now Ashlands. Everything hits so hard that blocking is usually a bad idea, unless you have a huge health pool and an excellent shield, and even then...

#

Numbers of enemies, even after the nerf, are just too many. Especially when they can be so tough individually.

#

The fortresses can be worn down over time but every way I have of handling them feels cheesy

#

Ashlands is the first biome that feels like busywork, which I have to cheese to win

#

Dirt towers and sniping spawn buildings

#

Because I can't just drop into the middle of one and duke it out, that's very chancy. You end up kiting a huge crowd and dodging arrows. Even that feels cheesy.

#

I'm not a Viking warrior fighting an ancient war against the undead, I'm a gamer exploiting wonky AI to edge out a win.

#

THE FANTASY IS GONE at Ashlands.

#

So I grind through most of it, and then quit. Because what am I even doing here?

inner pebble
#

...and it looks like there aren't any rebalance mods to fix the Ashlands. Not that I can find in my searches so far. So... yeah, I might just be done with this game.

gaunt ingot
#

i'm not sure honestly what would make it feel better, but I have this same general "vibe" about Ashlands--I've gotten all the way to Fader altar and with the 9 bells collected, and (besides the boss fight) I've still got "taming a 2 star asksvin" and "the fire sword miniquest" on my "to do list" before personally considering the biome "beat" but I've stopped at that point months ago and been procrastinating with every conceivable task instead of diving back into hell again

smoky scarab
#

The thing I dislike about ashlands is that once you know what you are doing it is way too easy and quick to go through. Just get a few cores from putrid holes to unlock stone portals, mine a couple spire and instantly teleport the metal to smelt, get the battering ram to do a few fortress to get some gems for weapon upgrades and you will most likely get the boss location doing so and just run to the boss and kill it. Takes less than 4 hours from landing to get the best upgraded gear and weapon and finish the boss. It takes me so much longer to do the mistlands

rugged stag
#

That's your gameplay though

#

Food resources are also something to take into account before fighting bosses

smoky scarab
#

For many of the recipes you don't even need to add the cauldron upgrade so part of it is unlocked instantly and easy to get the rest you just get once you have metal

gaunt ingot
#

this is just totally an unvetted idea, but I wonder if it would be an improvement if the biome's BASE spawn rate was pretty low, and it actually felt pretty dead, except a few select areas maybe around fortresses and then the rest the spawning was mostly POIs that the biome started peppered with but you as player graudally of course can remove, and those POIs specifically consist of pairs of "warring camps" of charred where they are clearly demarcated by different banners/accent colors, hostile to each other but mutually the player, unable to damage the effigy spawners of either camp, so they'd be constantly pouring out enemies killing each other provided the player didn't get to close, and if they did of course they'd also potentially both target the player (the usual prioritizing AI scheme)--you'd have to manage tackling them strategically to clear the effigies from both 'camps' and stop the constant spawning; might make the biome pacing feel more manageable/player controlled, and perhaps thematically also convey a sense of "the player coming to an ancient and still raging battlefield" that maybe is the aesthetic they were going for

#

then in between those POIs, except around the fortresses/whatever selected areas, rates of charred are very low or near zero, rates for everything else is pretty low too, so you're most likely to just occasionally bump into a big baddies like the valks alone, or a pack of voltoure , but not "a fallen valkyrie, 2 asksvin, a half dozen charred, 2-3 lava blobs, and once you start fighting, the other half dozen charred in the area will start beelining to your position too"

the contrast of a less 'busy' but still dangerous is a 'vibe' I've got from what the devs have stated their intentions are for it, but that's admittedly MY reading bewteen the lines (very possibly wrongly) and nothing really concrete at all--in any event, critiques of Ashlands aside (like looking for 'even better' to get to a's good as the rest' by comparison to the bar of "basically perfect"--as ORIGINALLY released, and somehow they keep finding ways a la Home & Hearth, Bog Witch, and Combat, to make it even better) everything done so far has given me every confidence it will be great and well worth howver long the wait is

Quite often, there isn't much in them and they tend to be dominated by a very small color palette.

burnt leaf
#

i live for snowy places, they've got a lot of potential and there aren't many out there that really bore me.
complete opposite opinion on deserts and volcanic areas though, they gotta work hard with secondary characteristics to be interesting to me, ashlands just barely get into the "i like this" zone by being the most ruin-dense biome in the game, i love ruins

coral cedar
#

In my opinion, Ashlands does the whole "desolate fiery landscape" thing better than literally any other game I've ever played. Something about the atmosphere of the place is exceptional.

burnt leaf
#

i will say i think it's also better at being a hot lava area than most other hot lava areas i know.
-# i'm a monster hunter fan and as much as i like to gush about that franchise's map design, its volcanic area roster doesn't have too many bangers
-# you can tell there isn't much potential in a concept when 3 different games' volcano maps are just called "volcano" even when all the other locales start getting fancier names like "deserted island" or "sandy plains"

im trying to decide if this game is for me or not....its either i get valheim or enshrouded. ikik this question gets asked alot but i really cant seem to make up my mind as to which game i should get first. and before you say get both, maybe in the future i will. but as of now, in college, i want to spend all my leftover energy on one game. is valheim worth it? or should i go enshrouded and do valheim later down the road?

storm anchor

#

i should also mention, i think im going in solo. my friends seem to struggle playing games that arent mainstream lol

runic sorrel
#

Enshrouded will get timely updates

smoky scarab
#

I played quite a bit of both, enshrouded is not something I would replay really, the building system is nice and detailed but still worst than valheim's because of the lack of stability or smoke mechanic

#

The combat in enshrouded is also much worst, you can just get good gear and you don't even need to eat anything and just click anywhere and you will auto lock in on enemies and target them and destroy all the max level enemies and the life leach will keep you alive

grand urchin
#

yea ive heard a lot ab that. lowk seems pretty intuitive. i like the fact that what you craft and build actually matters for your surivial. its not just cosmetic. its necessary to move on. enshroudeds whole deal of finding better gear than what you craft kills the idea of crafting

#

thats good to know

umbral fog
#

I did play a bit of enshrouded when it came to EA, but really didnt like it much so i refunded it, i am considering trying it again since it got quite a few updates since then i believe. But i cant say i am in a hurry to do so ๐Ÿ™‚

storm anchor

#

Enshrouded also leans much more heavily into the RPG side of the game and less on the survival/crafting side. It treats crafting of armor and weapons more like a backup option if you don't find good stuff, rather than the primary way to get it. As mentioned above, food is also entirely optional; I beat everything in the game up to the point that existed when I bought it and literally never ate anything the whole way. Various regeneration/healing methods exist, so food basically just buffs your base stats a little bit. To its credit, though, since the world of Enshrouded is entirely pre-made and it does lean on the RPG side, it does have much more interesting dungeons and puzzles, as well as more structured encounters with powerful enemies. Also has a handful of NPCs, town-building stuffs, quests, all that kind of open-world RPG stuff.

Bronze Mace and Iron Mace count as Club weapons.
As does ||Frostner||, ||Porcupine||, and ||Flametal Mace||.

#

Hell, the Torch counts as a Club weapon iirc.

im assuming those need the uhh.. forge, whatever it was called

plain kraken
#

You need a Forge for all but the Torch, Wooden Club, and ||Flametal Mace||.
The former two require a Workbench, and the latter requires the ||Black Forge|| which is acquired in late game.

#

Lowkey, when you acquire ||Frostner||, you can just say "Fuck it, we ball" and use that till end game.
||Frostner|| is great for every enemy that isn't a Mountains enemy (and I imagine eventually Deep North enemies).

Sorry for the ping btw, but during Plains tier, which Trinket would you generally go with for Battle Axes (since you're the resident Battle Axe Enjoyerโ„ข):

||- Iron Brooch

  • 65 Adrenaline Cost
  • 50 Healing
  • +20 Armour
  • 30s Duration||

||- Nimble Anklet

  • 60 Adrenaline Cost
  • +50 Stamina
  • +15% Movement Speed
  • 30s Duration||

Currently rocking Nimble Anklet since my first thought is "Wow... Stamina and Movement Speed is definitely what a Battle Axe wants", but I'm curious on if Iron Brooch would be worth to take into the ||Mistlands|| since I imagine the Armour and Health could help a lot with parries.

storm anchor
plain kraken
#

I just leverage Stamina with Tasty Mead then, as per usual?

storm anchor
#

Tasty mead I usually rely on more.

#

Berserkir mead is also great, but gotta be more careful when using that, Bonemass power helps overrun the weaknesses.

plain kraken
#

Yeah, I got plenty of Berserkir and Ratatosk on hand

It's a nice safety to have even if some other trinkets might make you more efficient, the most counter productive thing you can do is die so anything that helps prevent it is worth it

I suppose it's likely I might end up hit trading once or twice with Battle Axe, too.
So it would be nice in that sort of situation.

I've a question for something I can't quite test at the moment.
If a 2 meter horizontal wooden beam is half overlapping with a roof of some kind (you know how you can place beams into the seams of roof pieces and create latice looking patterns on roofs), will it decay in the rain or no? Because I want to do a build where 1 meter of beam sticks out past the roof overhang, and I'm curious on if half of the 2 meter wooden beam being "engulfed" by the roof is enough to stop decay.

umbral fog
#

I am afraid it will still decay, since generally even if you have only a small gap in your roof the whole tile beneath it will decay, so i would assume same would apply in this situation.

plain kraken
#

Hmmmm...

#

Maybe I just go build in the Mountains then.

#

It's pretty there anyway.

umbral fog
#

No rain there ๐Ÿ˜„ just nice snow

frail pond
#

You will eventually unlock horizontal beams that won't decay in the rain.

plain kraken
frail pond
#

(there is also another way to prevent rain damage even further in progression)

plain kraken
#

the problem is aesthetic clash

plain kraken
frail pond
plain kraken
#

Ah! That!

umbral fog
#

-# Well you dont even need to go to ashlands to unlock it ๐Ÿ˜„ but technically it is after mislands are finished

plain kraken
#

I was planning on a long term build in the Mistlands at some point eventually and considering the aesthetic there, maybe some ||Shield Generators|| would go well with it...

#

But for now, I suppose I will focus on building my "primary home" in the Mountains

frail pond
storm anchor
plain kraken
#

True!

#

I've been doing some thinking and I've decided I might just build my new main base out of core 'n' dark wood in the Black Forest, ideally in a patch that's also linked to Plains and hopefully Swamp

The files are found in this route: user name > Appdata > LocalLow > Iron Gate > Valheim.
