Various reasons. One I can remember is that it would be too easy to hit enemies from where they can't hit you.

When fighting on a slope you have to consider the height of the attacks you're using. Spear primary is great for enemies higher than you, for example. And being slightly above the enemy can help a lot for dodging their attacks.

In most cases you should be able to jump or move around the enemy for the right height difference you need. If you can't, you put yourself in a bad position.

It's happened alot to me in the || mistlands dungeons || only felt like I could hit them on even ground

You've only had the opposite because the hitbox is the way it currently is.
They have tested making it as open as people want it many times, and it always results in it being pathetically easy to find angles where you can kill everything while taking no damage.

Which is why they are keeping it the way it is.

If you could aim your attacks down, jump attacking would be even more op than it already is

Just use a bow, arbalest, any ranged magic, or the alt attack on one-handed axes 😏

Valheim Dedicated Server and the game client's built-in "Start server" flow are the only ones that are supported. At the moment, the network RPC API changes too fast for 3rd parties to even consider an alternate server implementation.

If you don't like what they offer, feature-wise, it's possible there is a mod that will do what you want, but it won't be officially supported and might not be kept up to date with latest game/server releases.

Yes, the server needs to know about the same actions, objects, terrain, and locations as the game/client in order to support gameplay. With the game in active development, the types, names, and structure of actions, objects, terrain, and locations are changing pretty frequently. If you wanted to write your own server program for Valheim, it would be hard to keep up to date with those changes. Luckily the game has a built-in server option and Iron Gate also releases new versions of Valheim Dedicated Server whenever the game has its own release with changes.
